T

HE CONCEPT OF LEGACY can take on many different meanings. On one level, it can be a purely financial concern.

The assets and capital you worked so hard to save but this definition is changing, as is American definition of retirement.

Because of this, we all need a plan to be protected and prepared.

At the turn of the 20th century, the average life expectancy was 47 years.

Today, it’s nearly doubled- meaning the average American retirement is now over 20 years. Great news for all of us, but longer lives present us with more challenges and transitions than only a generation ago. Today, for a successful life and legacy, we must identify and fix the problems that render 86% of trust and estate plans out of date. That’s why our team has developed a personalized discovery and review process, as well as a Lifetime and Legacy Protection Program for the families we serve.

A modest retirement account was, not long ago, enough to support a retiree for 5-10 years. What happens when we need resources to live 15, 20, even 30+ years? This is occurring at the same time that retirement funding has moved from employer provided pensions to a system mainly based on IRAs, 401(k)s and personal savings. There are many challenges that affect our health, financial, tax, legal, personal lives and legacies. Thankfully, for almost every problem there are solutions to address the challenges we will encounter in our life journey and legacy creation.

that would pay for itself and would become an income-generating asset rather than a “wasting” asset.

The solution: a jeep with a plow attached.

Thinking back, that Jeep and plow not only paid itself, my Dad’s advice led to an early discovery of using resources and time to help families as we serve others. This was probably the most important lesson I learned in high school. It didn’t seem like a “lesson” at the time but, my father was both a good role model and an accomplished educator.

You don’t need to have a lot of money, be an entrepreneur, attorney or CPA to have your personally important core values to pass on.

There is more to life than finances, taxes, and laws. The modern definition of legacy, as defined in, “Your American Legacy”, includes: PERSONAL VALUES: Just like my father’s advice to buy a vehicle that would generate income, your personal legacy includes how you’ve lived your life and the lessons that you feel are important so that you would like to pass them on to family, friends, and those you care about.

PROFESSIONAL LEGACY: We don’t spend 50+ years working to let all our experience and learning

disappear when we die. There is value in passing on your values and approach to family, life, education, health, work ethic and experience to those in future generations!
