Boston fashion designer got his start at an early age

Daniel Faucher is known for creating distinctive bridal gowns.

By Kelley Walker Perry, Contributing Writer BOSTON - As a boy in upstate New York, Daniel Faucher raced other neighborhood children on bicycles to St. Mary’s Catholic Church when a wedding was scheduled.

Everyone wanted to catch the first glimpse of the bride as she emerged.

These days, he is always first to see the bride.

An early start with sewing His maternal grandmother lived two doors down and taught him to sew. First, he created childhood costumes; then he stitched prom dresses for neighbors. But his first serious design work was for his older sister, Anne. It was a Bob Mackie-inspired semiformal gown ― black, with a shockingly low pearl backdrop necklace.

He started designing under his own label in 1985. Since then, Daniel Faucher Couture gowns have been worn across the globe ― from inaugural balls in the United States to events at Buckingham Palace. The late Linda Cole Petrosian ― fashion Boston fashion designer | 3

New AARP Survey Reveals Veterans More Likely to Lose Money to Scams Than Civilians

assachusetts’ 383,087 military veterans and active-duty service members are at risk of being targeted by scammers. According to a new AARP report at: http://www.aarp.org/vetsfraudreport2021, veterans, military and their families are nearly 40% more likely to lose money to scams and fraud than the civilian population. Additionally, 4 out of 5 military/veteran adults were targeted by scams directly related to their military service or the benefits they receive.

Our research stresses the need for Massachusetts veterans and their families to stay up to date on the latest scams and how to avoid them. AARP Massachusetts continues to fight for those who proudly served our state by arming them with information and resources to avoid the financial and emotional impact of scams and fraud.

Mike Festa Scammers often use military jargon and specific government guidelines to craft an effective pitch to steal money from military members and veterans. One in three military/veteran adults reported losing money to these types of service-related scams. Of those who lost money, the top scams reported include: • Benefit Buyouts: Turning over U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pension and/or disability benefits for a supposed lump-sum payment that never materializes (47%).

• Fraudulent records scam: Paying for updated personal military records (32%).

• The fake charitable giving request: Donating to fake veteran charities (32%).

Other key findings include: • Military/veteran adults reported losing more money than civilians on the grandparent-impostor scam (more than twice as often) and financial phishing schemes (nearly twice as often).

• Nearly half of military/veteran adults reported they are not using a robocall blocking service and over 1 in 4 have not registered their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry.

• 81% of military/veteran adults have not placed a security freeze on their credit report.

To make scams easier to spot, AARP’s Fraud Watch Network recommends signing up for the National Do Not Call Registry and using a call-blocking service. Additional measures include: using strong and unique passwords for each online account; using two-factor authentication when available; and placing a free security freeze on credit reports at each of the three major credit bureaus.

Also, veterans never have to pay for their service records or earned benefits — if told otherwise, it’s a scam.

Operation Protect Veterans — a joint program of the AARP Fraud Watch Network and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service — helps Massachusetts veterans, service members and their families to protect against fraud. The Fraud Watch Network also offers biweekly fraud alerts and a free helpline (877-908-3360) through which veterans, military and the public can report suspected scams. The AARP Watchdog Alert Handbook: Veterans’ Edition explains 10 ways that con artists target veterans. The survey was administered in August 2021 to a total of 1,660 people: 851 active or former U.S. military respondents and 809 non-military (civilian) adults ages 18 and older using NORC’s AmeriSpeak Internet Panel. The margin of error is 4.40% at the 90% confidence level.

Boston fashion designer got his start at an early age “We’ve moved so far beyond men telling women what they should wear,” he said. “I’ve learned to listen and try to make a dress where people say, not ‘That’s a beautiful dress,’ but ‘Wow, you look fantastic.’ ” Sometimes he uses a small piece of lace from the mother’s gown as an appliqué, repurposes buttons or adds antique jewelry to honor the past and personalize the new dress or petticoat.

In fact, the bridal petticoat is itself made into a special heirloom.

“A blue bow belongs underneath the heart, and a piece of the grandmother’s lace,” he said.

The petticoat is intended to be reused as a bassinet cover for the couple’s first baby. Faucher, who has no children of his own, is touched by such sentimental details.

“I get caught up in it all,” he said.

“I adore bridal,” he said.

Gowns start at $1800; he requests a budget from clients before showing fabrics.

“We only work in the best fabrics possible. I love organza and taffeta ― lightweight, crisp, sheer fabrics. But there’s a difference between four-ply crepe and six-ply crepe,” he said.

Taking a step back Faucher suffered a brain aneurysm in 2004. No lasting effects remain, but he quit participating in Fashion Week and producing work to sell in stores.

“The extra hubbub just was really too much,” he said. “It made for an easier work-life balance.”

Waltham Street studio is bridal wear, although Faucher doesn’t just “do weddings.” He is a senior instructor and co-director of education at the School of Fashion Design in Boston; creates custom gowns; and does an occasional “trunk show,” taking samples to high-end boutique stores that have referred clients to him for years.

When the pandemic temporarily eliminated the need for bridal gowns and evening attire, Faucher used his needle and thread to make fashionable masks. The proceeds from those sales paid the bills and helped provide medical masks for Boston-area healthcare workers and caretakers.

But his magic is back at the drawing board.

“People are planning large-scale weddings and formal events ― and they need the gowns to match,” he said. “For us, bridal season is Labor Day to Columbus Day. But this year, we’re busy straight through the beginning of January.”

Faucher, who just turned 61, noted that more weddings are being booked for March and April.

“Who gets married in March in New England?” he quipped.

“No one has ever suffered from an extra fitting,” he said.

Be prepared for cold weather health challenges

By R. R. Fletcher Contributing Writer REGION - Cold weather can be challenging. And the fall and winter climate in Massachusetts requires special care and attention for those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or vascular disease.

Colder temperatures increase the risk of hypothermia. Hypothermia is prolonged exposure to cold, which causes the body’s core temperature to fall below 95 degrees F (35 C). In addition, snow, rain, and wind can lower a body’s temperature. Wind can be dangerous because it can eliminate the layers of warm air that protect a body. For example, the chilling effect of a 30-mile per hour wind in 30 degrees equals 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Some common symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, confusion, sleepiness, bluish complexion, and loss of memory or muscle coordination.

Persons with diabetes are at higher risk Over the winter months, people of all diabetes types tend to have higher HbA1c levels. Cold hands can decrease the desire to test blood sugar levels. In-

Supply your emergency contact with a list of your doctors, medications, and your commonly used retailers that deliver ― including pharmacies. Or consider changing your prescriptions to home delivery.

BOSTON - Though some older Bay Staters are retiring early, many are continuing to work out of need or want.

With this can come increasing age discrimination and other employment-related claims. The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) was formed by the legislature in 1946. It was one of the first agencies in the United States to protect citizen civil rights and can investigate and prosecute grievances of ordinary people. And it’s all free of charge.

No cost to file a complaint The agency team of attorneys and judges are experts in discrimination law, according to H. Harrison, executive assistant to the commissioners. Harrison explained that people who seek to sue their employers for age discrimination or other agencies for discrimination must by law also file their case with the MCAD. By doing so, they can win compensatory damages, monetary damages for emotional distress as well as obtain affirmative relief which includes job reinstatement and mandatory employer training.

Half of all people filing with the agency also retain private attorneys.

Cases are investigated free of charge but may involve lengthy time frames. Individuals have only 300 days to come forward to file a discrimination complaint.

There are several groups protected from employment discrimination by law. They include sex, race, religion, color or national origin, people over 40 and people with physical or mental handicaps.

Low number of age discrimination cases filed In 2020, only 18 to 20 percent of cases filed with the MCAD were for age discrimination in employment. Despite that low number, statistics on age discrimination from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that around 64 percent of the workforce has been a victim of or has witnessed age discrimination in the workplace.

In the MCAD’s annual report for 2020, there were 1,126 reported cases of retaliation and 1,083 disability cases reported. Cases for housing discrimination are also investigated by the MCAD and cases often overlap among categories.

The individual planned to retire in under three years when he was placed on a Performance Improvement Plan and then terminated. The termination came less than two weeks after he told the company he needed to take leave for hip surgery. Result was he lost health insurance benefits when he was terminated and had to postpone the surgery. The case settled for $230,000 of which $115,000 was for emotional distress.

A court of legal discrimination experts Harrison explained that while the MCAD has its own court of legal discrimination experts, some cases settle out of court even before going to trial with the MCAD. What is certain, he further elaborated, is that the MCAD will be a neutral investigator and uncover unlawful discrimination. What prevents a case from successful prosecution? “Lack of evidence makes or breaks a case,” Harrison said.

More age discrimination cases as the population gets older Our aging population in Massachusetts increases the likelihood of higher numbers of age discrimination lawsuits against employers, when workers stand up to fight this form of unlawful discrimination. Nationwide, the number is up from 15,000 complaints filed in 1997 to 21,000 complaints for age discrimination in 2013, according to the US Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, which enforces federal discrimination laws.

By utilizing MCAD’s services, older workers in Massachusetts can try to maintain dignity and independence in the workforce for as long as they desire to work.

Seniors embrace company’s virtual reality experience

By David Wilkening Contributing Writer SOMERVILLE - When CEO Kyle Rand began his technology start-up Rendever in 2016, virtual reality (VR) was still primarily associated with video games. So how would often technology-doubting older people react to their own version of virtual reality offered by Rand’s company?

“Amazing,” is one word Rand uses for the reaction of older people who are sometimes characterized as resistant to technology favored by younger users. Once exposed to it, older users become, as he noted, his company’s “best ambassadors, encouraging their friends and neighbors to try it.”

Rendever is a company whose products are targeted to the elderly. Its stated mission is to “overcome social isolation through the power of virtual reality and shared experience.”

“VR is helping organizations (such as senior living places) realize the potential of virtual tours though immersion,” according to BigBuzz, an advertising agency with many technology clients. “Companies like Rendever are at the forefront of this digital transformation.”

The virtual reality (VR) experiences offered by Somervillebased Rendever have shown to be beneficial in reducing social isolation and chronic loneliness among seniors.

The benefits of VR VR is computer technology that simulates a real or imagined environment so that the user can interact with it as if physically present.

The evidence is clear that older users have taken to a technology once known mainly to video game users.

They are also deriving obvious benefits from it. Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab found older adults who used a VR system were more likely to feel positive about their health and emotions. They

were also less likely to feel socially isolated than those viewing similar content on television.

VR has taken great leaps forward in recent years with improved technology that includes wireless headsets and a growth in the library of materials available. Headsets or goggle-like covers over a user’s eyes are a critical element in VR. And so are computer-generated images or environments.

One of Rendever’s claims to fame is having one of the largest libraries of VR experiences. It releases new themed experiences on a bi-weekly timeline, often based on holidays, seasons and requested topics.

Rand points out that childhood homes are among the most requested topics of VR. But so are personal recollections such as weddings and other events. Personal experiences can include seeing photos of friends and family at social events.

VR options also allow users to travel the world, such as taking a trip to Paris or London, and to have sometimes thrilling experiences such as skydiving. Family members are sometimes startled to hear older members or grandmothers describing a boat ride in raging rapids.

Families often want repeat performances “Family members may be a little worried initially but once they understand what we’re doing or experience it themselves, they get extremely excited,” Rand explained. The usual reaction after the first time: they want to try it again.

Rendever has simplified the experience for users at well over 100 senior care centers, hospitals and other institutions. There is no cost for participants or their families, who are frequent companions on the trip.

Communities pay for it.

An always-popular subject for VR experiences is hometowns. A Rendever team described the experience of an Ohio woman making a return visit to hers with her family. “She immediate-

ly welled up with emotion and started sharing stories about the house, neighborhood and everything she loved about the town. The whole room was in tears.”

The therapeutic value of VR encounters is obvious. One story describing it involved a hospitalized elderly man struggling with dementia. He was slouched over in his wheelchair, unmoving, his eyes closed. His experience was a three-dimensional painting by Vincent Van Gogh with a classical piano playing in the background. “What happened next stunned everyone in the room,” according to the Rendever team. “He just came alive. He started moving around. He was all of a sudden much more engaged in the world.”

Growing up with an interest in the elderly The boyish-looking Rand grew up in frigid upstate New York. But after graduating from Duke University with Biomedical/Engineering and Neuroscience degrees, he moved to Boston to take on several jobs as a developer.

One of his experiences was as a developer/program analyst for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he was instrumental in various creative programs such as a sleep apnea study.

Rand was unusual in his lifelong interest in older adults. He was particularly close to his two grandmothers.

He recalls spending a week with his expectant mother and grandmother at a hospital in Rochester. They were trapped because of a snowstorm.

The Rendever program thrived during the pandemic. But his interest in the senior care industry began long before that. He and his friends volunteered each summer for elderly care.

He also studied cognitive decline in the aging population at Duke.

“Growing up, I volunteered and scooped ice cream for my local senior living community. One benefit was getting unlimited free ice cream,” he joked.

One of Rand’s grandmothers died while he was in his first year at Duke.

Her negative experience with senior care was a strong influence on his interest in seniors.

He became acquainted with elderly social isolation and chronic loneliness. Among them: a 2015 study published in Perspectives on Psychological Science that found long-term social isolation and loneliness led to health effects comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Another study around the same time found that loneliness increased the risk of strokes and coronary heart disease by 30 percent.

VR may not exactly be the real world, but it appears to provide some of the same benefits.

Hudson High ’85 alum, singer-songwriter and bassist is still rocking a 30-city national tour as opening act for the hard rock band Extreme. Venues ranged from a 2,700-seat theater to small clubs.

“We would go from playing places like the Orpheum Theatre in Boston to playing on stages that felt like you were standing on a pool table,” Powell recalled.

Flesh continued gigging regularly through 1997.

After graduating from Hudson High School (HHS) in 1985, he recorded CDs and toured with hard rock bands nationally and overseas.

Now residing in Sterling, Powell continues playing with multiple bands and foresees more reunion shows.

“It’s a pure love of playing music,” he said of his longtime passion. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

Founding Flesh One of Powell’s early-1980s bands, known as Child, ultimately featured lead vocalist Paulo Bettencourt of HHS class of 1981. In 1986, Powell and Bettencourt formed the hard rock band Flesh with singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Cherone and drummer David “Gonzo” Gonzalez.

Flesh made its 1986 debut at the now-closed Narcissus nightclub in Boston’s Kenmore Square.

“It was our first Boston gig and definitely a stepping stone,” Powell noted.

Soon afterward, they became known for bringing big vocals — and equally big hair — to the Boston music scene.

Along with a songwriting deal from EMI Music Publishing, Flesh received two nominations for Outstanding Local Hard Rock Band from Boston Music Awards in the early-1990s. They released a self-titled CD in 1993.

Exploring rock styles Ready for another musical venture, Powell and Cherone invited the Dempsey brothers — lead vocalist Tommy and drummer Robbie — to form the band Super Zero.

“Super Zero was still hard rock but a little more pop punk,” Powell explained. “I love what Fresh did, but Super Zero was more lighthearted and fun.”

Their 1997 CD, “Attack of the Air Monkeys,” prompted a record deal with the Japanese label Big MF Records. The release of their 2001 CD, “Hogwash,” coincided with a tour in Japan.

“We made our travel plans – then 9/11 happened,” Powell recounted.

Accessory Dwelling Units are one approach to expanding housing options for seniors

By Colin McCandless Contributing Writer REGION - It’s certainly no secret that there’s a housing shortage in Massachusetts, especially in the greater Boston area. State legislators and municipalities have been tasked with examining different solutions to address the need. So how do you add more housing without changing the look and feel of neighborhoods?

One option gradually gaining more traction involves providing additional housing on existing single-family owned lots.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are defined as a self-contained apartment in an owner-occupied single-family home or lot. They can be either attached to the principal residence or housed in a separate structure on the same property, such as a garage or carriage house. Sometimes also referred to as accessory apartments, in-law apartments, “granny flats” or secondary units, ADUs contain a kitchen, a bath and typically have at least one bedroom.

tute, was titled the “State of Zoning for Accessory Dwelling Units.” It found that “loosening local zoning laws to allow for the development of more accessory dwelling units (ADUs) would help ease the region’s housing shortage without creating any significant problems.”

The report indicated that as of 2018, 37 of the 100 Boston-area communities allowed ADUs and permitted them to “be rented out, though typically with significant restrictions.”

Thirty-one other municipalities allowed ADUs, but with the caveat that only the homeowner’s relatives or a caretaker could occupy them. The remaining 32 communities, it found, did not permit zoning for ADUs. Amy Dain, who authored the report, told the Fifty Plus Advocate that “housing advocates have been promoting ADUs for decades, and the regulations remain highly restrictive overall.”

Some municipalities have since approved measures allowing ADUs while others are considering proposals, thanks in part to a Massachusetts state law implemented in early 2021 that lowers the threshold for approving housing-related zoning code or bylaw amendments.

The Housing Choice legislation requires only a simple majority vote by a town council, city council or town meeting to pass a zoning proposal like permitting ADUs, eliminating the previous two-thirds majority requirement.

Dain said that “overall, though, the rate of change in this area has been slow,” with respect to allowing ADUs.

City of Salem amends existing ADU uses Five years ago, the city of Salem adopted a zoning amendment targeted to older adults and championed by the Massachusetts Councils on Aging, allowing ADUs on a limited basis for family members and caregivers only, that required a special permit.

The change wasn’t impactful, though, according to Salem Planning and Community Development Department Deputy Director Amanda Chiancola. “It was so restrictive, it didn’t create enough housing options,” she recalled. “We really wanted to create a flexible process.”

In the winter of 2021, Salem passed an amendment to its city zoning ordinance for a new accessory use of ADUs that removed some of the prior amendment’s restrictions, allowing ADUs in single-family, two-family and three-family houses “by right,” with no special permit requirement.

Salem worked on the ADU proposal for three years, but despite recommendations from housing advocates and an AARP endorsement, the amendment failed twice before being adopted. Concerns included that allowing ADUs would ruin the neighborhood character or that they would necessitate a major investment, limiting applicants.

Chiancola highlighted ADUs’ benefits. “They’re great for older adults, for seniors.” She added that it also gives an opportunity to first-time home buyers, who can earn additional income from a long-term ADU rental to help them afford a mortgage. She further explained that most people in Salem work in retail or the service sector and can’t afford housing there. Because the units are smaller (Salem’s bylaws limit ADUs to 900 square feet or 75 percent of the main house), they generally cost less than full-size rentals.

“It creates housing options for people in Salem who really need it,” she said.

Town of Arlington approves ADUs The town of Arlington voted in spring 2021 to approve an amendment to its zoning bylaws, allowing ADUs in single-family and two-family homes and duplex dwellings. Arlington defines an ADU as a “self-contained housing unit” featuring a bedroom, a kitchen and bathroom facilities, which is situated “on the same lot as a principal dwelling.”

any residential and business-zoned districts, and the amendment doesn’t restrict who can reside in ADUs, meaning that it doesn’t have to be occupied by family or a caregiver. “The main limitation on ADUs in Arlington is that they cannot be used as a shortterm rental,” said Arlington Planning and Community Development Director Jennifer Raitt. This is also a stipulation of Salem’s ADU amendment.

Also similar to Salem, the creation of an ADU in Arlington doesn’t require any additional off-street parking.

Framingham exploring the benefits ADUs are currently illegal in the City of Framingham. But elected officials are working with the planning board to investigate whether allowing them would benefit residents, according to Erika Oliver Jerram, acting director of Framingham’s division of planning and community development.

During the summer, Framingham disseminated a survey and conducted

extensive public outreach to “take the temperature of the community” on the issue of ADUs, said Jerram. Seniors expressed significant interest. Jerram explained that over the last 20 years there has been a movement within the planning world for seniors to “age in place.”

“This is a great way for folks to do this if it’s done right,” she said.

If approved, ADUs would be defined in a special zoning ordinance or as a zoning provision stipulating what would be allowed in Framingham. Jerram referenced the Housing Choice law as helping provide the impetus for more municipalities to explore ADU amendments as another approach to addressing housing needs. “Offering diverse housing options is key to a healthy, thriving community,” she said. “It (ADUs) allows density without changing the fabric of your community.”

Salem wants to see other municipalities support allowing ADUs. “We hope other communities take advantage of it,” asserted Chiancola. “We need houses.”

Prepare for storms and possible power outages Create an emergency kit and store it in an easily accessible place. It should contain candles, matches or a lighter. Also needed are flashlights, a battery-powered or crank lamp, a radio, fresh batteries, canned fuel, blankets, a small knife, can opener, bottled water, and non-perishable foods. A fireplace can provide heat and a method for cooking ― stock up on wood. And finally, keep a list of emergency numbers handy.

Take precautions if you go out during severe weather Always dress as if you will be outside in the cold for an extended period.

Even a quick shuffle to the mailbox can be dangerous without the proper attire.

And whether inside or out, dress in layers. It acts as insulation to keep the body warm.

Wearing a hat or headscarf is a good idea as heat dissipates through your head. Keep your hands, feet, and ears warm. They are particularly prone to frostbite.

Check the weather and keep your car maintained and the gas tank full.

And just like for the home, put together an emergency car kit. Throw everything in a backpack for easy carrying. Include a flashlight with extra batteries, emergency flares, blankets, hats and mittens, non-perishable snacks, and water. Other necessities include a cell phone, an emergency charging bank and cables to contact help in a storm. Cash, a few days of prescriptions, and jumper cables for your car’s battery are a good idea. An auto club membership such as AAA or Onstar is also a wise choice. These make great gifts too.

If you must go out in severe weather alone, let someone know where you are going, when you should be back and the route you will probably take, just in case.

New Bedford tells a whale of a tale

Annual Moby Dick Marathon The month of January has a particular emphasis on Melville in New Bedford. Since 1997, the New Bedford Whaling Museum has marked the January departure of Melville from the city to join the whale hunt with its annual Moby Dick marathon. This popular annual event, which typically attracts hundreds of visitors, will be held virtually this year on January 7 to 9. The event includes one of the world’s best-known readings of the novel, a trivia contest and lectures by Melville scholars.

The story of Melville and his book could make a Hollywood-style movie itself. As they sometimes say in film, the story “was inspired by real events.” There really was a killer albino sperm whale named Mocha Dick who was so aggressive he sank nearly two dozen whaling ships.

The original 752-page hardcover book had a printing in the U.S. of 2,915 copies. That was 1,000 less than

NEW BEDFORD - Soon after his latest book was published in 1851, former mariner Herman Melville must have felt like a failure. Little did he know it, but he had written a masterpiece, and his hometown would become world-famous largely because of it.

When Melville returned from the sea to write “Moby-Dick” after 18 months on the whaling ship Acushnet, the writer lived in small but prosperous New Bedford. The population at the time was about 16,000. Because the city is still small today with around 100,000 residents, it has become a popular tourist destination ― and easily walkable for most visitors.

They are told that it once was the whaling capital of the world. It has also been called the “city that lit the world” as whale oil fueled many of the lamps of the era. And it was once the wealthiest city on the planet, per capita. It is still dominated by the fishing industry (scallops now), but the link between Melville’s book and the city itself is like Florida and sunshine, or Hollywood and movie stars.

You don’t have to know the whale

New Bedford was once the wealthiest city on the planet, per capita, during its whaling heyday. Now scallops are the catch that its fishing industry focuses on.

“biblical and archaic, unceasingly allusive.” Melville earned only $556.37 from the novel. He was forced to return to New York City to spend the rest of his life as an everyday customs inspector.

When he died in 1891 at the age of 72, The New York Times got the name wrong. They called him the author of “Mobie-dick.”

Book is rediscovered after his death It wasn’t until the centennial of Melville’s birth, 1919, when American biographer and critic Carl Van Doren discovered the book. He bought it at a used bookstore, probably for a few pennies of its first edition cost of $1.50.

Over the following decades, Melville’s “Moby-Dick” was widely recognized as one of the Great American Novels, even to some critics beating out Hemingway, Faulkner and Fitzgerald.

The city of New Bedford is located just under 60 miles from Boston and perhaps somewhat more than an hour’s drive away. It was named after an aristocratic English family.

Tourism officials make no bones that its growing appeal in recent years has been based mainly on the faded whaling industry, but also on Mel-

ville himself.

Visitors today can find in the city various examples of both the author and the whaling business. The period covered is mainly from the 1820s until whaling’s demise in 1925, when the last whaling ship sailed out of New Bedford harbor. More pure, smokeless whale oil came from New Bedford than from anywhere else on earth. It was used for lamps and other related products.

The city’s top attractions There are three “must-sees” for people interested in not only the industry but also the Melville story.

First is the New Bedford Whaling

Museum. It has it all ― the industry’s art, history, science and culture of South Coast Massachusetts. It has what is termed the world’s largest collection of scrimshaw. It also has the world’s largest whaling ship model. The Lagoda is 89 feet in length with a mainmast of 50 feet. Visitors can board the ship, which was built in 1916. The 750,000 artifacts in the museum’s collection include many products made from whale bones, such as harpoons so sharp that sailors shaved with them, according to Melville.

Metered street parking is available near the museum. Current policy is timed admission, and there are maximum capacity limits.

The second Melville attraction is even more of a bargain: free. Because whaling was a bloody and dangerous business, whalemen were known for their love of saloons and gambling dens. But also churches. So the Quaker-oriented New Bedford Post Society for the Moral Improvement of Seamen started the nondenominational Seamen’s Bethel in 1832.

Melville did attend. And the pew he sat in is marked. As for how it looks today, attribute it to the movies.

When Melville wrote of the chapel, he describes the pulpit as being suggestive of the front of a ship.

But the pulpit when he visited was not prow-shaped; in all probability, it was a typical New England boxstyle. The New Bedford Port Society listened to the grumblings of disappointed visitors for years before deciding to build a mock-up of the pulpit described in the book and seen in the movie.

Finally, the third stop for Melville fans might be for some comfort food and a brew inspired by the novel. The Moby Dick Brewing Co. is a short walk away. No, Melville did not drink here, because it opened in 2017.

But the brewpub’s on-premises-produced draft beer pays tribute to the book. So toast Melville with an IshmAle, an amber ale, The Pulpit, an IPA, or Eye of the Whale, a Scotch ale.

Westborough woman channels breast cancer experience into massage therapy career

By Peg Lopata Contributing writer WESTBOROUGH - A woman who knows how to take care of herself is a good bet for someone who knows how to take care of others. So not so surprisingly, Paula Kirk, 58, is a massage therapist.

“I like helping people with their health and wellness,” she said in an interview earlier this year.

She likes taking care of herself too.

“I do a lot to take care of myself,” she explained. “I get massages, acupuncture and chiropractic [work] and I see a therapist for mental health counseling.”

She also likes to birdwatch, walk, take day trips to gardens and the beach. And she likes hiking, being with family, eating out, relaxing at home, watching movies and dancing. Recently she’s been going to the YMCA for strength training and stretching.

Paula Kirk is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Reiki Master Practitioner at Westborough Massage.

Cancer changes everything Some may not think of these many avenues to choose from to keep the mind and body healthy, but Kirk’s brush with cancer and her mother’s death from cancer has greatly influenced her life.

“My mother’s illness and death greatly influenced my decision to learn more about holistic health and eventually become a Reiki master

and licensed massage therapist,” she said. “My work doesn’t cure cancer, of course, but I can help people feel more relaxed and healthy in general.”

“I do integrated ‘bodywork,’” she continued, “— which means a mix of techniques to help release patterns of chronic tension and stress, promoting relaxation, pain relief and greater ease of movement.”

Motivated to help to find answers to why Kirk’s family’s women have unfortunately seen many cases of breast cancer. Three generations have had breast cancer diagnoses, including a niece only 23 years old. All this has happened without a clear genetic link, according to Kirk.

Kirk herself was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer at 46. Both she and her niece are healthy now.

Kirk thought about herself and all these women in her family having breast cancer and wanted to support work that funded research asking why breast cancer is found where there’s no genetic link. That led her into contributing to the efforts of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC).

“I agree with MBCC’s assertion that cancer is big business and breast cancer ‘awareness’ is promoted by corporations that sell products that may cause breast and other cancers,” Kirk said. “I support MBCC’s mission to fund research into environmental Westborough woman | 13

10 things I know about property maintenance

tarting 2022 off well may mean different things to different people. Many people (myself included) want to be more organized and more mindful of finances.

Fortunately, one area of emphasis can do both— preventive maintenance.

While these pointers are likely a review for our elder homeowners, they can serve as a useful reminder if you have recently moved. Both as a homeowner and a landlord, here are some of the important lessons (many learned the hard way) that I have learned along the way: 1. Know your limits. Maybe you are really handy. If so, good for you. But even handy people have limits.

Know when you should call a professional and know when you need to pull a permit. Unsure? Then you are probably already out of your depth. The professional plumber/electrician/whatever is going to save you money in the long run.

2. Write down your preventive maintenance schedule including what to do, when to do it, when it was last done, and any notes on how to do it. This includes things like draining hoses and shutting off the outside water before the first hard frost so you don’t break temperature-sensitive plumbing.

3. Safety first. Make sure to include replacing batteries at least annually on your preventive maintenance list. This could save lives. This year when doing it, make sure you write the date the detector was purchased (and when it should be replaced) and the type of battery needed so you are not fumbling for the right info when you need it.

4. Remember the items that you should be doing monthly or weekly. Make sure you put these items in your calendar or to-do list so you don’t forget them.

5. Have handy a spreadsheet of information about the major assets in your home, the make and model, year purchased, and any details. Keep this info on the cloud. If your refrigerator goes, you will need to give this information to the appliance repair person and if they know what brand, they might be able to get a few parts before they even show up at your house.

6. Video the home and its contents yearly. In the event of a catastrophic loss, your video will help you remember what contents you had so you can report the information to your insurance company. A five-minute video is probably all you need.

7. Know your shutoffs, water, electric main, oil switch, etc. Knowing where to go in a crisis will reduce your reaction time.

8. Have a list of reputable vendors handy. Make a list of plumbers, electricians, pest control people and anything else. If you are able, make a point to have them come out before there is a crisis.

9. Know your area. Find out where the closest fire hydrant is. Look around for the slope near the property and how significant rains might affect things.

10. Know your neighbors. Your neighbors may see a problem before you do.

causes of breast cancer because they are focusing on prevention and everyday actions we all can take, such as choosing safer household, lawn care [and] bath and body products.

“They also advocate for policy changes such as eliminating PFAS (manmade chemicals) in food packaging,” she continued. “These chemicals are linked to breast cancer, but also other illnesses.”

The understanding massage therapist In her work as a massage therapist, Kirk carries her own experience with cancer into the massage treatment room. That experience includes a lumpectomy and five years of Tamoxifen, a drug for early-stage breast cancer.

“My experience, and those of my family members and friends, has made me more conscious of all the different types of cancers, treatments, side-effects and lasting physical and emotional effects of treatments any client may be having,” she said. “People who have a cancer history will have lasting changes in their bodies, minds, and

spirits.”

Though the physicality of her work is demanding, Kirk is happy to continue giving massages. She considers getting into this occupation her greatest accomplishment in her life so far.

Indeed, Kirk started her new career more than 20 years ago, moving on from a 12-year, nine-to-five gig as an inside sales representative at a Worcester-based industrial company.

It’s not easy to take such a leap.

But Kirk is not one to take things easy.

She wants to continue learning and, in fact, said she may be looking to train in oncology massage.

A changed life Having breast cancer herself has been truly a life-changing experience for Kirk. She’s learned that it’s survivable and, in many cases, preventable.

“I’ve gained awareness that many people have survived many different cancers and it has affected their bodies, minds and spirits,” she said. “And, there are lots of actions we can take to stay healthy.”

It’s about time

I

suppose that most of us were happy to see the end of 2021 and hope that 2022 will be better for everyone.

I agree, except to add that any year seems good to me if I’m around to see the end of it. Some year — not to be morbid — I won’t be, unless Mother Nature can be persuaded to make a remarkable exception in my case.

I once knew three elderly sisters who lived together and would tell me they had spent an afternoon doing something-or-other “to pass the time.” I felt like asking, “To pass the time until what?” What were they waiting for? How much time did they have left, that they were so content to allow their precious hours to slip by unadorned and unappreciated?

Time is an odd possession. We all have some, but we don’t know how much. Sometimes our incessant busyness deters us from considering how we would prefer to use our time. Or, like the sisters, we let hours slip by without giving them our full attention.

I sometimes think that the more expressions we have about a subject, the more important it is in our lives. And look at all the ways we describe how we grapple with the mystery of time.

We spend time, waste time, gain time, lose time, buy time, and save time. We make time, take time, have time limits, take time off, stall for time, take time out, have time to spare, take our time, follow timetables, and spend quality time. Time flies. An event is well-timed.

We wear a timepiece. We say we have

too much time on our hands. We run out of time.

One of my favorite movie versions of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is the musical “Scrooge” with Albert Finney in the title role. The story is about using time. Scrooge, being elderly, maybe doesn’t have much time left on this planet. He has spent his adult life in a dark and narrow place, never looking beyond the confines of his finances. If asked, he would probably say “time is money” and that’s all it is. He has never fully participated in the life teeming around him. His time is passing, and he has not enjoyed or appreciated any of it. The spirits challenge all that.

The Ghost of Christmas Present, about to bid Scrooge farewell, says “There is never enough time to say or do all the things we would wish. The thing is to do as much as you can in the time you have… Time is short, and suddenly you’re not there anymore.”

That’s blunt enough to get Scrooge’s attention. Mine, too.

It’s customary in January to make New Year’s Resolutions, for those inclined to do so. I’m usually not. I do not find the depths of winter encouraging for self-improvement. I hunker down and wait for the newness, growth, and inspiration of spring.

But in pondering my 2022 calendar, I wonder how I will spend those precious days and hours. Will I make them matter to me or to anyone else?

That’s the big question. Scrooge finally figured it out, but he had help from unearthly beings. You and I must work it out on our own.

In any case – I wish you a happy new year. Whatever transpires this year, I hope you can find some time to have a good time.

At Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) in Worcester, staff and instructors are doing everything they can to make older students feel welcome and get the best training possible for today’s jobs.

Jobs for QCC graduates QCC strives to ensure their graduates have the skills that are needed in today’s work environments ― so no need to panic if you feel you aren’t ready for a high-tech workplace.

“I know that going back to school after a long time is scary,” admitted Jacob Longacre, a professor of electronics engineering technology. “I did it to complete an MBA and later to teach.

But what about math and computers?

If an older student is concerned about their math or computer phobia, QCC programs all include basic math courses and basic computer skills.

Said Lee Duerden, associate professor of manufacturing technology and program coordinator, “Our classrooms are not the classrooms older students may remember from thirty years ago.

explained, “We have a customized learning pathway that’s right for each student.”

With courses offered during the day, at night, on weekends and online, at QCC you won’t find it hard to fit classes into your schedule. Also, older students who already have significant knowledge and experience can get credit for what they know.

Real world ready “The manufacturing technology department has a state-of-the-art lab with equipment that represents what’s out there in the real world,” explained Damian Kieran, an instructor of manufacturing technology.

This equipment includes such machines as 3D printers, precision measurement equipment, and laser cutting machines. The advanced technologies lab has four industrial robots and a fully automated manufacturing system.

“We are constantly investing in new equipment to ensure we keep up with industry trends,” noted Kieran.

A modern learning environment is also found in the electronics department.

“Students are engaged ― they might be fixing wiring systems, programming controllers to perform various tasks, programming robots, or troubleshooting electrical, electronic and mechanical problems,” said James Heffernan, professor of electronics engineering technology and program coordinator.

Jobs, jobs, jobs Jobs in manufacturing technology and electronics can be well-paid and provide interesting work. But at fifty and older that means something different to someone much younger.

“Let’s face it,” said Duerden. “At fifty we’re planning for retirement.”

Close to home “I interact with employers so we can design programs that ensure employers have the talent they need to fill open positions,” explained Manning.

Added Heffernan, “We provide an advanced technical education that makes our students strong candidates for these jobs. In addition, older students in my program bring a wealth of life experience with them.”

In such fields as electronics and manufacturing, students needn’t go far afield to find these positions.

QCC graduates in these fields are highly likely to find work here in Massachusetts, sometimes even before they’ve completed their training, according to Duerden.

“I don’t know of a single graduate,” said Duerden, “that hasn’t either gotten a job or transferred to a four-year college after leaving QCC’s manufacturing program.”

Transgender actor frustrated by lack of roles

“No one has ever doubted my talent as an actor,” says Tori Clay, who has struggled to get work since coming out as a transgender woman six years ago.

the playwright. I said my name was Vic Clay, and he said, ‘That’s an amazing name for an actor,’ ” said Clay.

“I have done pretty much everything above and below the line. I have packaged top-lined features, directed, produced, written, shot, coached privately, coached on set, performed stunts, stunt driving, precision driving, combat, stand-up and improv comedy, sang, and danced. I had a hit commercial on ESPN,” said Clay.

Enter Tori Clay The pandemic has made it even harder for Clay as Tori to find roles.

The LGBT production company Quarantine Players’ Facebook page includes some of her recent work.

“In a real heart-tugging tearjerker called ‘30 Deep,’ I played a Vietnam vet from Texas,” noted Clay. This past year, “I had a principal role in a short film called ‘Stuffed,’ ” said Clay.

Along with becoming an actor, growing up, Clay had dreamed of playing tennis and the guitar. As Vic and Tori, he and she have done both.

Both Vic and Tori have played competitive tennis at clubs throughout the Boston area. Her game has been sidelined over the past few years by a rotator cuff injury. As for guitar, recently Clay started playing at open mics and is now getting paid for gigs.

Gender spectrum “I spent most of my life thinking that I was a normal straight guy who liked to cross dress,” Clay reflected.

“I started vacillating between that and feeling like there was a woman who I needed to let out. I thought maybe I was lying to myself for most of my life. I realized I had the ability to live my life the way I was meant to live it.”

She had the financing and psychological documents ready for gender reassignment surgery but used up the funds taking care of her elderly mother. “I kept putting it off and I lost the psychological moment,” Clay said. “I wondered if it was what I wanted to do.”

Now, out of desperation to get roles, Clay said, “I told all the local casting people that I am willing to work and audition anywhere along the gender spectrum.”

I had 90 credits as Vic Clay and have had two as Tori Clay over the past four-anda-half-years,” she said. “No one has the need to hire a transgender actress with a male voice,” the 68-year-old Somerville resident explained. “And especially if she is not young and beautiful with great hair. And then you toss into the mix the fact that I am so hard of hearing that I wear hearing aids.”

On the positive side, Clay said, “I am the first transgender female art model in the world to be signed to an agency contract. I posed for artists. I am also a graphic artist that has had a gallery show, a published author, and an activist for transgender rights.”

“No one has ever doubted my talent as an actor. I worked with A-list stars, interacting with them, having my own trailer on the set, and getting pranked by them and pranking them back,” Clay recalled.

One of Clay’s acting highlights was playing an incarcerated child molester in the film “What Doesn’t Kill You.” “When my cell doors opened, Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo were standing there menacingly, and we had an argument. Then they came in my cell and beat me,” said Clay.

Technology helping the blind or visually impaired ‘see’

By Peg Lopata, Contributing Writer REGION - Sometimes the profusion of apps, new devices and other tech tools could make you dizzy ― but choices are good, especially for the blind or visually impaired.

Said Alexander Pooler, director of assistive technology at the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), “The availability of many different technologies can be overwhelming. But our department is always excited about technology because it seems like there is something new for our community every year.”

Navigation advancements Navigating the world from your own space to the world at large takes some learning if you’re blind. One development in the works is a wearable navigation device that MCB is hoping to bring to the marketplace in Massachusetts.

Pooler explained, “This device ― first of its kind ― will aid in community mobility. It was originally tested by the first blind runner to participate in the New York City Marathon unassisted.”

These kinds of devices that make access everywhere for the blind and visually impaired are vitally important, many in the community believe.

“We’re really hoping for self-driving cars,” said Jerry Feliz, director of the Assistive Technology Training Center at the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Brookline. “Self-driving cars will open up a lot of doors. And help so much with making social connections. It’ll really make a difference.”

Progress in other applications For the blind and visually impaired, optical character recognition (OCR) and textto-voice devices have been notable advancements. OCR sees words and with text to voice, says aloud what is printed. Another new technology allows people with low vision to don a wearable device that dramatically magnifies and improves their ability to see things.

Gayle Yarnall of Amesbury uses, among other smart phone apps, one called Colorino which tells you what colors things are. If you need a person to quickly see something for you, there’s a free app called BeMyEyes that connects you by smart phone

with a sighted person anyplace in the world who speaks your language.

For the most fun device, Feliz said he turns on his Apple TV. “I love it,” he said enthusiastically. Not only does Feliz love his Apple TV, he feels that Apple has been a leader in integrated accessibility, or in other words, has built-in features that make something work especially well for those who are blind or visually impaired.

“The most helpful advancement for me,” explained Feliz, “are devices that are accessible from the beginning. When that’s done, the product is going to be a lot better.”

People with low vision can dramatically improve what they can see using this wearable device.

Basics matter But whether it’s an app that does something like enabling you to hear a label read aloud on a prescription bottle, or something less critical, Feliz thinks it’s still important for the blind to not get too caught up in the latest tech devices.

And Yarnall added, “Some of this stuff is freakishly expensive.”

“There’s a danger with technology,“ added Feliz.

He believes these devices can be really good ― but he also believes knowing how to use your cane well is very important, and human-centered assistance is helpful, too.

Connecting with others creates a richer world for anyone―but for those with limits on mobility, connections may not come easy. Devices may seem to help get to a point where you don’t need any help from anyone. But Feliz noted, it’s interdependence with others, in fact, that leads to greater independence.

People-to-people connections, fancy devices aside, are ultimately what many people feel make lives full and more meaningful ― no matter how much or how little you can see with your eyes.

HOLDEN - Roberto Mighty of Holden hadn’t given much thought to aging until he turned 50. That’s when eye floaters appeared as small spots that drifted through his field of vision.

“I went to my doctor, and she said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re just getting older,’ ” he recalled. “I didn’t take it very well.”

This revelation inspired Mighty to explore the aging process via his work as a filmmaker. Now age 66, he’s the producer and host of a new public television series developed by his production company Celestial Media LLC. “From the very beginning, I wanted to create a companion website so that people anywhere can log on and respond to my survey questions,” he noted.

Hence, he titled his project “getting dot OLDER.” Its premiere season begins Sunday, Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m. on WORLD Channel, the multicast public TV network of GBH Educational Foundation.
