opkinton schools will go to a fully remote learning model for the week after Thanksgiving, superintendent Carol Cavanaugh told School Committee members at their Nov. 19 meeting. The move is designed to reduce the chances of possible increased COVID-19 cases due to traveling and socializing over the holiday break. “A week after Thanksgiving, we could see a lot of positive COVID cases,” she said. With even one positive case in the schools, “everything kind of stops” as school officials, including nurses and principals, gather and determine who the close contacts were and what the next steps could be. More potential cases could be “far more disruptive,” she said. “I know remote isn’t ideal,” she added, but given the potential for up-

Hopkinton tries to manage COVID spike I

n his update to the Select Board on Nov. 10, health director Shaun McAuliffe said the town had 10 COVID-19 cases, with two more anticipated the following day. The number, at zero one month ago, had spiked to 14 a week earlier, then dropped to five a few days later before the more recent jump. It was up to 16 on Nov. 19. “Consistent with what’s going on in the state and the country we continue to see a spike in cases throughout Hopkinton,” McAuliffe said, adding: “We’re trending in the wrong direction.
