Schools to go remote for week after holiday

opkinton schools will go to a fully remote learning model for the week after Thanksgiving, superintendent Carol Cavanaugh told School Committee members at their Nov. 19 meeting.

The move is designed to reduce the chances of possible increased COVID-19 cases due to traveling and socializing over the holiday break.

“A week after Thanksgiving, we could see a lot of positive COVID cases,” she said.

With even one positive case in the schools, “everything kind of stops” as school officials, including nurses and principals, gather and determine who the close contacts were and what the next steps could be.

More potential cases could be “far more disruptive,” she said.

“I know remote isn’t ideal,” she added, but given the potential for up-

Hopkinton tries to manage COVID spike I

n his update to the Select Board on Nov. 10, health director Shaun McAuliffe said the town had 10 COVID-19 cases, with two more anticipated the following day. The number, at zero one month ago, had spiked to 14 a week earlier, then dropped to five a few days later before the more recent jump. It was up to 16 on Nov. 19.

“Consistent with what’s going on in the state and the country we continue to see a spike in cases throughout Hopkinton,” McAuliffe said, adding: “We’re trending in the wrong direction.

hen Ronnie Shamus first set eyes on St. John’s Wilson Street Cemetery, it was, as he described it, “in complete disarray.”

A year later, the burial ground has been givINDEPENDENT en new life.

THOUGHTS It was almost a year ago when ShaJERRY SPAR mus, now a Hopkinton High School senior, was looking for a challenge as part of his Eagle Scout project. He checked in with his pastor at St. John the Evangelist, but Father Richard Cannon couldn’t immediately come up with any ideas.

“I wanted to do something for St. John’s because I had been going there forever and I always had an idea in my mind that I wanted to give back to the St. John’s community and Father Cannon,” Shamus said. “So when I asked him what projects he might have around the church, he couldn’t really think of anything. We started going down the list

of things they had on their agenda for the year, what they wanted to get done.

Wilson Street Cemetery had always been something that they wanted to get to but never had the time or the budget to do it. So he suggested that. He thought that it might be too big a project for me, but I decided to take it on anyways.”

According to various historical accounts, an influx of Irish immigrants to Hopkinton in the mid-1800s led to the creation of a Catholic church (St. Malachi’s, which had been located on Cedar Street, across from what is now the U.S. Post Office) and the purchase of 2 acres of land on Wilson Street for a cemetery.

In the ensuing years, as more and more Irish arrived, a larger church — St. John the Evangelist, which still exists on Church Street — was constructed and a larger cemetery was created on Mount Auburn Street. The last burial at the “Old Catholic Cemetery” on Wilson Street is believed to have taken place 100 years ago, and the area had fallen into neglect.

ous Eagle Scout projects at the grounds, but overall the cemetery remained in less-than-ideal condition, with a small, often-muddy parking area, no defined walking path, and little explanation of who was buried there.

“If you go over there you see random rocks placed all over the place,” said Shamus, who has Irish heritage.

“The Irish-Americans had no money, so when someone would die they would just dig the hole, put them in there, cover it up and place a piece of granite as the headstone. So there are a lot of unmarked graves there and no way of knowing who is in there.

“Where you see the walkway now, we stripped a full layer of topsoil off in order to lay base stone. One of our concerns was that we were going to stumble upon someone who was buried there, because there was really no way of knowing where some of these people were buried. So we had to be really careful about that before we started digging.”

Shamus’ interest in the cemetery was piqued when he found out that some Civil War veterans were buried there. One in particular turned out to be especially interesting.

“I was doing a little bit of research at the beginning of the project about the cemetery as a whole. There wasn’t that much information about the people buried there,” Shamus said. “My next-door neighbor was there with me one time and he pointed to a stone and said that it was a kid who was killed in Gettysburg, so I looked more into it.”

The “kid” was 19-year-old Thomas Fetherston, a Hopkinton resident who was a member of the 11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which suffered heavy casualties during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, on July 3, 1863.

This past summer Shamus and his parents rented a motor home to drive to a baseball tournament in Georgia (Shamus is captain of the baseball and hockey teams at HHS). On their way, they stopped at Gettysburg and told their tour guide about the Union soldier from Hopkinton.

“The guide ran in the back, came back and said, ‘I know exactly where he was and approximately where he was killed,’ ” recalled Ronnie’s father, Ron, who also serves as Hopkinton Troop 4 committee chair. “He weaved it into the story [of Gettysburg], and it was a fascinating tour, because it was now connected to his Eagle project. It sort of made it all come to life.”

Added Ronnie: “He ended up taking us to the exact spot where [Fetherston] was killed, and there’s a monument there for his regiment with the names of those who died there. His name is there in Gettysburg. I thought it was really interesting how a small cemetery in Hopkinton could be connected to such a large piece of history.”

With extra motivation after he returned to Hopkinton, Shamus continued to work on the cemetery in preparation for a rededication during the town’s Veterans Day ceremonies. In addition to creating a walkway and parking lot, Shamus — with guidance and assistance from American Legion Post 202 adjutant (and stonemason) Mike Whalen — arranged for the placement of two new monuments. A tall one in the middle of the grounds features a Celtic cross and recognizes those buried there, and a smaller one placed on a carvedout area of a huge stone pays tribute to

the veterans.

While Shamus and his father performed the majority of the work, assistance came from Shamus’ fellow scouts in Troop 4 as well as HHS hockey teammates Dan Kirk and Will Quinlan.

Ackerman Monument in Holliston and Swenson Granite provided materials and carving for the monuments at a discounted price. McIntyre Loam and Rosado & Sons Landscaping donated materials and helped fix up the grounds.

The Knights of Columbus provided financial support.

On Nov. 11, in the culmination of his year-long efforts, Shamus spoke about his project during the Veterans Day ceremony at the renovated grounds, and Father Cannon performed a blessing.

“I knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I didn’t quite comprehend how much work it was going to be,” Shamus said. “I took it on because I wanted to give back to Father Cannon and the church and all those buried there. It ended up being a lot more work than I thought it was going to be, but it turned out much better than I was actually expecting.”

Added Ronnie’s father: “It was a worthwhile project for him. We have some projects that only last a day or a few days. This one will have a lasting impact.”

PJB holiday drive underway Hopkinton-based Project Just Because has taken on new significance this year as the pandemic has left many people out of work and unable to afford necessities. In addition to providing food, clothing, toiletries and other items to residents and other Massachusetts families in need, the South Street charity annually has a holiday drive. This year the organization is aiming for 15,000 gifts to provide to struggling families before the end of the year.

“This has been an unbelievable year,” said PJB program manager Cyndi Beale. “It’s just been so crazy because of what’s been going on with COVID and all the layoffs. Requests have been quadruple what we usually get.”

Successful mercury recover program ends On behalf of the button cell battery/mercury recovery rebate program at the Hopkinton Senior Center, I want to thank you for participating in the collecting of button batteries over the past several years. Our goal was twofold: 1, to remove mercury from the municipal waste stream and 2, to use this as a fundraiser for Hopkinton senior activities.

As you know, mercury is poison for the environment. Batteries contain a small amount of mercury that were being thrown into LETTERS TO our landfills. Wheelabrator Technologies, a recycling company, THE EDITOR has been collaborating with local towns including Hopkinton in collecting the batteries and supporting us with funding projects.

The button cell battery rebate program has been a HUGE success! We have been part of saving over 67 pounds of mercury from the municipal waste stream.

Due to new technology, button batteries do not need mercury to work anymore.

Consequently, this program is ending.

Thanks to town businesses, town offices, churches, post offices, audiologists, shops and more for collecting the batteries. Thanks also to Friends of the Seniors and the office staff at the Senior Center who have been monitoring our collection sites. Most importantly, thanks to all the individuals that kept a tiny bowl on their sink or bureau collecting batteries from their hearing aids for this collection.

Proposed Lincoln Street-area development focuses on original plan The proposed development in the area off Cedar Street near the Southborough line includes two four-lot cul-de-sacs.

he focus of the proposed eight-home development off Cedar Street returned to its original plan during the Nov. 16 Planning Board meeting. Under the plan, one four-lot development would be constructed on a new cul-de-sac that would be built off Cedar Street Extension. The other development would be on a cul-de-sac added to the end of Lincoln Street.

At the last Planning Board meeting the developers had presented two alternative plans, based on input from Planning Board members at earlier meetings.

However, since the last meeting the town’s zoning enforcement officer made a determination that had a major effect on the proposal.

Lincoln Street is a 1,700-foot-long dead end road off Cedar Street (across from Carbone’s restaurant). While the town has a bylaw limiting dead-end roads to 1,000 feet, zoning enforcement officer Chuck Kadlik indicated that the board should only ensure that the extension of the road falls within that 1,000 feet limitation — disregarding the existing portion of the road. This means no waiver would be needed to extend the road about 400 feet, as the plan proposes.

Multiple board members expressed a desire for some existing sections of Lincoln Street to be widened as part of the plan. The road is narrow — as little as 10 feet wide in one point.

However, principal planner John Gelcich cautioned members about suggesting changes to the road, as that was not what the developer put before the board.

“You can condition that they widen Lincoln Street, but that’s not necessarily part of the proposal,” Gelcich said, adding that there is no guarantee any such condition would hold up.

Courtney Derderian, who lives at the end of Lincoln Street and is presenting the plan, said adding a cul-de-sac at the end of Lincoln Street will improve safety, as it will allow larger vehicles a place to turn around and allow school buses to access the road. But she said widening the existing portion of Lincoln Street is not feasible.

“We don’t feel as though our proposal warrants fixing the entire road,” she said, adding: “It’s just not something we can possibly do with this plan.”

After a lengthy discussion, the hearing on whether to grant an open space land preservation division (OSLPD) concept plan special permit was continued to Dec. 7.

determined amount of money to guarantee survivorship of all plantings for five years from planting, and identify/mark the 24 larger trees that are designated for removal so the town’s tree warden can check them first.

Also, the board voted 7-2 to approve developer Lou Petrozzi’s petition to construct a portion of Leonard Street with conditions, which will allow him to build three home lots there.

Waivers were granted to allow for a hammerhead turnaround using the start of the driveway for two of the lots (7-2 vote), to not force construction of a sidewalk, as none exists on the road (8-1 vote), and to allow for above-ground utilities (8-1 vote).

Rare earthquake felt in Hopkinton

T

he U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.6 earthquake centered just off the Southeastern Massachusetts coast on the morning of Nov. 8, causing brief shaking that was felt throughout the region, reportedly as far as 100 miles away. Some people in Hopkinton reported feeling minor rumbling.

The quake was centered in BuzNEWS BRIEFS zards Bay, and hit at about 9:10 a.m.

No damages or injuries were reported.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Paul Caruso told The New York Times that there have been 26 earthquakes in Southern New England since 1963, and this was one of the biggest.

However, he said it shouldn’t cause major problems.

“We wouldn’t expect there to be significant damage from this earthquake,” Caruso said. “Earthquakes in this area are commonly felt very far away because the rocks in this area are very contiguous, very old, so they transmit the energy very well from earthquakes.”

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency encouraged residents to check for property damage, especially to chimneys and foundations.

Herr rips Trump for ‘endless ignorance’

Certainly criticism of Donald Trump is nothing new, but when it comes from a formerly loyal Republican it carries more weight.

Hopkinton Select Board member Brian Herr was a Republican until two years ago, when he could no longer stomach the “negative and divisive” leadership he was seeing from the president. Herr, who was the Republicans’ nominee for U.S. Senate in 2014 (he lost to Ed Markey), ultimately switched to independent status.

With Joe Biden set to end Trump’s stay in the White House, the president has lobbed a number of wild and unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud.

Devout supporters, including some in Massachusetts, seized on the claims and planned rallies to protest the alleged fraud.

Herr received an email Nov. 5 from former Republican candidate for U.S. Representative John Paul Moran asking him to attend a “Rally in support of President Trump and against rampant voter fraud and the Democrats’ attempt to steal the presidential election.”

Herr shared his response with the media. It read: “Mr. Moran, over the last 18 years I have run for elected office 7 times (5 wins/2 losses) as a registered Republican in Massachusetts. You have run only once, correct? There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Massachusetts. There never has been. Jumping in on Trump’s baseless attacks against our sacred election process is pathetic and dangerous. Your [naiveté] is understandable given your lack of political experience. Trump’s endless ignorance is nothing short of a national tragedy.”

The Select Board approved Town Manager Norman Khumalo’s request for an exception from the hiring freeze to fill the vacancy for a senior library assistant.

Library director Heather Backman joined the meeting to say the library was looking to expand its hours, including adding restricted hours for immunocompromised/at-risk individuals.

“As we are looking at expanding hours we’re also feeling pressure to expand services in other ways,” she said.

“The fact that we have staff covering for this vacant position, some kind of core work that we really can’t just drop, means that we are struggling to meet the level of demand the community is asking for us to support them, to be as much as we can that community hub during this challenging time. That’s why we are seeking this exemption.”

Added Backman: “Part of the purpose of adding this is to enable us to add and sustain greater open hours, with the staff being able to do that in the longer term. We’re pushing to do as much as we can, but it’s becoming a strain on people to get it all done, and we want to do the very best we can by this community. We have a lot of need out there.”

best ways we can start doing that is by doing what we’re doing well in town already. We are testing at an exceptional rate. Since the [Department of Public Health] has been recording this, 11,126 people in town have been tested, and we’re averaging about 10 percent of the population every two weeks. We’re going to need to maintain or improve upon that testing rate to help identify who is infected, and then we’ll get them into isolation and quarantine.”

In the state’s color-coded COVID town map analysis, Hopkinton rose from green to yellow after the previous week’s spike but dropped back to green because the state adjusted the metrics to better account for towns with smaller populations. McAuliffe noted that the town’s average daily incident rate was at 7.4 per 100,000 and the positivity rate was 1.31 percent.

McAuliffe stressed that residents wear a mask, socially distance, focus on hygiene and stay home if showing any signs of sickness. He said the town has heard some complaints since the governor’s new restrictions — including a 9:30 p.m. curfew and face coverings in all public places — went into effect Nov. 6.

“If you’re out in public, wear a mask,” he said. “Obviously if you’re jogging down the Center Trail all alone at 6 o’clock in the morning you can take a break because there’s probably not

going to be anybody within a quartermile of you. If you’re alone in a field singing ‘The Sound of Music’ you don’t need to wear a mask. But you’ve got to have it with you. Because at this point with this rate of infection you just don’t know who’s potentially carrying it. So we want everybody to be compliant and just protect yourself, your family and those that you work with.”

McAuliffe said individuals are getting sick at “weddings, luncheons, small gatherings and larger gatherings.” He noted that athletics were not an issue in the first part of November. He added that the average age of positive cases, which had dropped significantly, was moving up “because we’ve seen a significant uptick in the number of older residents that are getting sick.”

Golden Pond had a staff member test positive recently. Staff and residents who came in contact were tested and no further cases had arisen. This is an example of how the town’s rapid and thorough response has helped keep the numbers in check.

“On a positive note we still haven’t seen community spread, and we haven’t seen any spread in the [schools],” he said.

Looking at the Thanksgiving and winter breaks, McAuliffe encouraged residents to have a COVID plan in place and be aware of the state’s rules about traveling out of state (mass.gov/infodetails/covid-19-travel-order).

rothers Ryan and Daniel D’Alleva recently completed their Eagle Scout projects in town.

Ryan, a junior at Hopkinton High School, installed an asphalt map of the United States at EMC Park. With help in the form of materials and labor from McIntyre Loam, 20th Century Homes, Asphalt Engineering and Franklin Paint, and support from the Hopkinton Department of Public Works and Parks & Recreation, Ryan excavated the area, set in the asphalt pad and painted the map.

Daniel, a sophomore, built a brick patio with a stone game table and stone stools at the Hopkinton Senior Center. McIntyre Loam, Weston Nurseries and Swenson Granite contributed to the project.

n a year defined by challenges and division, a few local artists are hoping to use their talents to bring people together.

Passersby might have noticed the murals being painted on the fence leading to EMC Park. The art is part of a larger project being sponsored by the Hopkinton Cultural Council (HCC), an organization that supports public programs in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences by granting funds it receives from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. HCC chair Ilana Casady said the purpose of the project is to unite people while also celebrating what makes us different.

“We are each unique, with our own story to tell,” Casady said. “Art is a vehicle to share a piece of our stories.”

Three segments of the fence are being painted by different artists or groups of artists. Hopkinton High School Diversity Club member Cindy Yang is working on a piece that incorporates Hopkinton’s marathon start line and depicts animals lined up to start the race, with the caption: “We all start somewhere.”

“We are all different but we are all experiencing and living in our beautiful town of Hopkinton together,” Casady said. “This mural aims to celebrate Hopkinton’s diversity.”

A group of three South AsianAmerican women, Charusmitha Ram, Tejaswini Dalvi and Sushma Tammareddi, are working on another mural, as are a group of Asian-American students who live in Hopkinton but do not attend HHS: Sophie Buer, Grace Liu, Dora Lu and Kayleen Tang.

Casady said she came up with the idea for the mural as a way to achieve multiple goals during the ongoing pandemic as well as the social unrest following the murder of George Floyd.

The HCC wanted to spread a message of celebrating Hopkinton’s diversity while amplifying artists from underrepresented backgrounds who often struggle to have their creative voices heard.

And even though the focus of the project is diversity, Casady said projects like the murals can be a way to bridge differences during these charged and difficult times.

“Art is universal, and everyone can appreciate it whether you’re liberal or conservative or whoever you voted for, you can appreciate art,” she said. “I also think in a time where people are having trouble listening to one another, it’s a way to communicate without words. It’s a way to learn about other cultures and see commonalities in each other.”

A small, socially distant unveiling of the first three panels is scheduled for Dec. 1, and they will show a snapshot of Hopkinton’s history, Casady said.

She added that the HCC is accepting grant applications for 2021 and they are due by Dec. 14.

“I really hope it continues to grow,” Casady said. “The fence is such a neat canvas and a neat location. The hope is that in 20 years we can look back on it and have it be a timeline of the history of our town.”

Hopkinton friends bring stories of hope from around globe

s we weave our way through the difficulties of the pandemic that has affected us all in one way or another, Hopkinton residents, friends, and editors Cynthia Franca and Cheryl Perreault have compiled a collection of stories, poems and images from people around the world with messages of hope — something everyone could use a little dose of right now.

“Hope through Community: Words and Images in Response to a Global Pandemic” is a collection of writings from individuals and their response to the pandemic and quarantine, as well as other challenges in life. The book includes photos from the Front Steps Project, for which several photographers contributed their images of families posing in front of their homes during the pandemic/times of quarantine.

The journey to completing the book began nearly eight months ago. However, it was just over seven years ago when the two ladies met at a Women’s Art Forum that Perreault organized, and they formed what seemed like an instant friendship.

“We became very good friends,” Franca explained. “We realized we shared common interests in community as well as creativity and art.”

Perreault said she immediately realized a connection between her and Franca.

“As women who both love art, I recognized a bright star in her,” Perreault stated.

“It’s very uplifting to hear how the contributions of all the writers goes forward; not only representing their art of hope but inspiring conversations related to hope that others want to share as well,” she said.

swings in post-holiday cases, “it makes the most sense to be doing this.”

She said that state education officials have “backpedaled” from previous warnings that schools that go fully remote after Thanksgiving could face an audit.

Committee chair Amanda Fargiano thanked Cavanaugh for making the decision early enough to allow families to plan. The district informed families in a Nov. 20 email.

Committee member Joe Markey reminded people that they should not travel or gather in groups during the holiday. “If you’re traveling, you’re putting the community at risk,” he said.

Cavanaugh also said that schools could return to full-time, in-person learning in March or April.

Right now, with statewide cases on the increase, “This is not a good time to be thinking of coming to schools full-time,” she said.

But she said that when the cold and flu season passes, and with the potential of a vaccine on the horizon, the spring might be a good time to make the change.

One obstacle, she said, is the limited space for all students to return while maintaining a social distance, particularly during lunch.

Other area schools that have returned to fulltime in-person education have more space to accommodate their students safely, she said.

Hopkinton schools could be looking at having students closer than 6 feet apart to allow a reopening, she said.

State education officials have mandated that all students who opt for fully remote learning must have that option through the end of the school

year, Cavanaugh reminded committee members.

Surveys of parents and students have shown their enthusiasm for having children in school. “It’s really good for kids to be here,” Cavanaugh said.

Markey, who has been an outspoken advocate of full-time, in-person education, said he was pleased to see that the district was looking ahead.

“We owe it to our kids to have a plan in place,” he said.

In other School Committee news, following a discussion at the Nov. 16 meeting the committee agreed to move ahead with plans to spend more than $3 million for an expansion at Marathon School to accommodate four classrooms.

The project, which would cost $3,625,000, would meet the projected expansion of student population, finance director Susan Rothermich said. Space is already tight at the building, with the health room now used as a preschool room and the art room serving as a first grade classroom.

Committee members unanimously approved moving the project forward for now but raised questions about the exact population projections and the community’s appetite for the financial impact.

Markey asked whether the population could change if more people opt for private schools for their children, particularly if those schools remain open full-time. He also said that even when the pandemic eases the schools may still offer forms of remote learning that could lower the population numbers.

In other issues, the district decided to close all forms of education on snow days. Cavanaugh said the issue could be revisited depending on how severe this winter’s weather conditions become.

HPS families cautioned about holiday travel H opkinton Public Schools superintendent Carol Cavanaugh emailed the schools community on Nov. 11 to clarify the protocol for those planning to travel during the Thanksgiving break.

According to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie SCHOOLS NOTEBOOK Baker’s COVID-19 travel order (mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-travel-order), all visitors as well as returning residents who do not meet an exemption are required to complete the Massachusetts Travel Form (mass.gov/forms/massachusetts-travelform) prior to arrival from a restricted state. These individuals also must quarantine for 14 days or produce a negative COVID-19 test result that has been administered up to 72 hours prior to arrival in Massachusetts.

Travel from lower-risk states do not require a form. As of Nov. 7, the lower-risk states outside Massachusetts were: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Washington, as well as

the District of Columbia.

Any student planning to travel to a restricted state is being asked to inform their building principal and school nurse.

Failure to comply with these orders could result in a $500 fine per day.

Any questions regarding this process should be directed to Hopkinton health director Shaun McAuliffe.

SMOC Fuel Assistance

The Outreach Department at the Hopkinton Senior Center is assisting residents of all ages with applications to the South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) for the home heating season, which is from November to April. ifty years from now, historians likely will find it fascinating talking to people who lived through the COVID-19 pandemic, which, among other things, forced the postponement of the Hopkinton High School football season and the cancellation of the annual Thanksgiving Day game vs. Ashland. It’s only the second time since the series began in 1923 that no game was played (1940 is the other).

Likewise, it was a pretty interesting time to be a high schooler 50 years ago, with top stories focusing on the Vietnam War, President Richard Nixon and the breakup of the Beatles.

Hopkinton in 1970 was a town with about 6,000 residents, a third of its current population. The Hillers football team faced a stiff challenge on Thanksgiving morning, as Ashland had won the previous seven matchups. It’s a far cry from the way things are now, with Hopkinton having won 17 of the last 19 meetings to take a 53-38-5 lead in the overall series.

The 1970 Hillers were a close-knit group that boasted 24 seniors, according to then-lineman Ed Flannery, who was known to his teammates as Geno. The Hillers posted a 6-3 record that included some impressive wins.

“We had a couple of [memorable] games, like when we played Millis, who came in undefeated at the time,” Flannery recalled. “We just played one heck of a game and we ended up beating them 24-16.”

The 1970 team was the final one coached by the legendary Aubrey Doyle (for whom Hopkinton Middle School’s Doyle Gym is named). Also a math teacher and athletic director, Doyle kept a close watch on his troops. After Friday night film sessions at the high school, Doyle would caution his players to be home by a 9 p.m. curfew.

“He’d say, ‘Just remember, 9 o’clock

curfew, I’ll be calling.’ And every now and then he would call your house to see if you were home at 9 o’clock,” Flannery said.

Flannery said the rivalry was taken very seriously — so much so that you had to be careful about paying a visit to the neighboring town in the days leading up to the game.

“Back in that time you didn’t go to Ashland around Thanksgiving, because if some of the Ashland kids saw you it could end up in something that you didn’t really want, like a fight,” he said. “The rivalry was just that big. Same thing with Holliston. You avoided going over there.

If they knew you were from Hopkinton you could be in trouble.”

The rivalry occasionally led to acts of vandalism as well, Flannery said, which became evident Thanksgiving morning.

“The game was in Ashland,” Flannery recalled. “We showed up to the high school in Hopkinton so we could get ready. It was cold, and it was foggy that morning. When we looked out onto our field, through the fog, we saw what looked like our goalposts laying on the ground. We took a few steps out there, and sure enough, some Ashland kids had come up the night before and broke off our goalposts.

“It gave our team a little bit more incentive 9:36 AM Page 1when we went down to Ashland

to play that game. There was no way we were going to lose that game, not after that.”

The Hillers also took motivation from the fact that it was going to be Doyle’s final game.

“We knew that Mr. Doyle was going to resign from coaching football at the end of the season,” Flannery said.

“We wanted him to go out as a winning coach, and we made sure we made the extra effort to do that. The group of seniors, we also realized that this was the last game we were going to play. We did not want to lose this last game.”

According to The Boston Globe game account, Hopkinton took a 12-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs by Paul Cotter and Terry DeLeo. Ashland recorded its only points on a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter. Hopkinton put the game away in the final period with a 23-yard run by Ricky Phipps, who also caught the two-point conversion pass from DeLeo to cap the scoring. Scott Haynes led the HHS ground game with 80 yards on 20 carries.

“It was just a great bunch of guys,” Flannery said.

Flannery, who went on to serve as an assistant coach for the Hillers for many years until he stepped away after the 2018 season (he also retired as head custodian at Hopkins School last year), said 1970 football looked very different from today’s passing-focused style.

“When we would go out to play we knew it was smash-mouth football, we were going to have to run the ball,” he said. “Almost every team was like that.

Nobody really passed back in those days. … Between Mr. Doyle and Mr. [David] Hughes, the theory was, ‘I’m going to beat you down, beat you down, and then I’m going to win the game in the fourth quarter when you’re too tired to stop us.’ That’s the way they would think about it.”

The community also has seen “unbelievable” changes since 1970, Flannery said, notably an influx of developments popping up off the side of previously sparsely populated roads like Ash Street and Saddle Hill Road.

Flannery said there were advantages and disadvantages to being a high school football player in a small town five decades ago.

“A lot of times we would all hang out on Friday night after our movie session with coach, and we might go out and do something stupid, like young boys would. But we all knew each other and liked spending time together,” he said.

“But the other thing was if you did something wrong and somebody saw you, they knew who you were. And if you were on the football team, Mr. Doyle might have gotten a phone call. Next thing you know there’s one kid who couldn’t play on Saturday because he wasn’t in before curfew or he did something that brought attention to the football team that was a no-no. He would sit you down. It didn’t matter who you were.”

Added Flannery: “It was a fun time to live in town.”

Sports HHS’ Jones set to run off to Florida

And she found it all in the northern Florida city of Gainesville.

Boys soccer closed its campaign SPORTS ROUNDUP at 2-4-4 after a 3-1 home victory on Nov. 8. After falling behind six minutes into the action on a penalty kick, the Hillers tied the game in the 48th minute on a goal from sophomore Sam Vasington.

Junior Owen Schnur put HHS ahead seven minutes later, converting a cross from Peter DeMichele. Schnur added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute on a penalty kick.

One day earlier, HHS dropped a 1-0 decision despite outshooting the host Blackhawks. …

Girls soccer finished with an impressive 6-2-2 record after blanking Bellingham 3-0 on Nov. 8. Gabi Ciri, Brooke Birtwistle and Lexy Trendel scored the goals.

On Nov. 7 the Hillers rolled to a 5-0 victory behind goals from Johanna DuPont, Ava Perlov, Alexis Viehl, Kelly Teitel and Birtwistle.

Boys cross country undefeated HHS boys cross country capped an undefeated season with a 15-48 victory at Bellingham on Nov. 7. Senior Nick Brown finished first, with teammates Jake Lacoche, Matt Burdulis, Wyatt Ruff and Craig Salois bunched together in the next four spots. …

Girls cross country also posted a 15-48 victory at Bellingham on Nov. 7 to finish the season at 4-1. Senior Olivia Jones won the race, with Hope DeLuca, Autumn Tumbleton, Katie Callery and Grace Joy in the next four spots. Greta Field and Lisa Levandovsky were in spots 7 and 8. …

Sharma scored the HHS goal off a pass from Sophia Luce. HHS closed out the season the weekend of Nov. 14-5 with a 1-0 loss vs. Medway followed by a 3-1 loss at Holliston. That left the Hillers with a final record of 3-6-1.

school and I love the sports atmosphere,” she added. “There is no better school to go to for sports than a school in the SEC.” Jones will be a preferred walk-on (recruited but not on an athletic scholarship) with the Gators track and cross country teams. She earned an academic scholarship and has plans to participate in the school’s accelerated dental program, with an eye on eventually attending dental school.

Jones’ path to becoming a Division 1 college athlete was a straightforward one, once she quit field hockey after middle school and focused on running all three seasons.

HHS cross country and track coach Jean Cann said Jones has been a stand-

out since the start of her freshman year.

“Right off the bat she was one of our top runners, coming into what was a strong team already, and she’s only gotten better,” Cann said. “She’s not only a great person but a very hard worker.

She was a two-year captain in cross country and was well-liked by everyone on the team.”

Added Cann: “She’s one of those kids who’s just good at everything she does. She’s artistic, she’s musical, and she’s strong academically and athletically.”

Jones has put together an impressive high school running resumé to this point, despite missing out on her junior outdoor track season. She earned wins at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 3 cross country meet in each of the last two years, capturing first place by a wide margin a season ago.

Jones went on to place fourth in Division 1 at the all-state meet. She also earned a top-five finish in the 2-mile at the track and field all-state meet, with a personal best time of under 11 minutes.

This fall, despite battling some knee pain, she earned two wins and two second-place finishes in Hopkinton’s dual meets (the league and state championship meets were canceled).

She was hoping to cap her high school cross country career in style this past weekend in the Massachusetts State

Track Coaches Association Cup, which was scheduled informally this season.

“It’s our last race of the season so I am hoping to redeem myself,” she said prior to the meet.

With the cross country season completed, Jones said she may take some time off to get back to 100 percent before the track and field campaigns with the Hillers.

Her attention then will turn south.

She said she considered several schools, including Florida’s SEC rival Alabama and George Washington, which offered her an athletic scholarship, before finalizing her decision.

She is looking forward to being a Gator and the new environment that awaits her in the Sunshine State.

“There are plenty of nerves involved,” she said. “I have some family in Florida, but no one near Gainesville.

It’s going to be so vastly different from everything I have experienced before living in Hopkinton and living in the Northeast, but I am excited to try something new and excited for the sports.”

Jones said her parents, Marisa and Kevin, preferred that she not head out west for college, saying anywhere on the East Coast would be fine.

“Of course I chose the furthest place on the East Coast that I could go,” she joked. “But they are super supportive and excited about it.”

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Buzzards Bay a couple of weeks ago. We received calls from customers asking how their homeowner policy would respond to such an event.

The traditional homeowner policy does not automatically cover earthquake or earth movement damage. Earthquake coverage is an additional coverage that customers must purchase separately. We quoted a client this week and the additional cost was only about $75 for the year.

Nobody was around it. Officer Brabham contacted the owner, who stated the vehicle was disabled and a tow was en route.

5:58 a.m. A caller reported a vehicle hit a deer on Hayden Rowe Street and minor damage was incurred. Officer Tyler Brabham responded and reported the operator did not remain on scene.

9:11 a.m. A caller reported someone found a dog running loose on Hayden Rowe Street. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and reported the dog was returned to its owner.

9:43 a.m. A detail officer on Hayden Rowe Street reported a flag flew up and subsequently damaged a vehicle. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and took a report.

11:22 a.m. A Blackthorne Circle resident reported a National Grid scam and wanted to notify other citizens of it.

1:17 p.m. A caller reported a lowhanging wire on Winter Street. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and contacted Verizon.

7:03 p.m. A Walcott Valley Drive caller reported a scam phone call from the district attorney and wanted the incident logged.

9:12 p.m. A caller reported an intoxicated person on Lumber Street who needed assistance finding his residence.

12:06 a.m. Officer Robert Ekross found a dead raccoon in the roadway of East Main Street and notified the DPW. 9:36 a.m. A Hayden Rowe Street caller reported he lost his iPhone and wanted it logged.

4:38 p.m. The Ashland Police Department requested assistance locating a suicidal female whose phone pinged to Cobblers Way. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officers Brian Sanchioni, Benjamin Stickney and Robert Ekross responded and searched the area with a negative find.

6:39 p.m. An East Street resident reported a raccoon was under his deck.

The animal control officer was contacted.

November 7

4:04 p.m. A caller on West Main Street reported a dispute with a customer about coffee. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded and the customer had already left. All was OK. 5:06 p.m. A caller complained of vehicles speeding on Ash Street notably between noon and 3 p.m. daily. Officer Robert Ekross spoke to the caller.

6:01 p.m. A motorist reported he hit a deer on Wood Street. No personal injuries were reported. Officer Benjamin Stickney responded and assisted.

9:02 p.m. Officer Robert Ekross reported fireworks being set off in the area of Hayden Rowe Street. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officers Benjamin Stickney and Robert Ekross responded and checked the area with a negative find.

1:03 p.m. A walk-in reported his real estate sign was stolen from the Town Common. Officer Moira McGaffigan logged the incident. The individual returned a short time later and reported the sign was removed by a town department, as he did not have permission to place the sign on the town common.

1:29 p.m. An Ash Street caller reported a neighbor blew leaves onto the sidewalk and left them there. Officer Benjamin Stickney responded and spoke with a person who was actively removing the leaves.

10:04 p.m. Officer Derek Morton found an active fire pit on the patio of Pan Thai on Main Street and extinguished it.

November 9

10:10 a.m. A caller reported a dog bite that occurred on Trevor Lane. The animal control officer was notified and was to handle the incident.

2:43 p.m. A Revolutionary Way caller requested to speak with an officer about an ongoing civil dispute about a bird cage. Officer Benjamin Stickney assisted.

6:47 p.m. Sergeant William Burchard and Officer Derek Morton responded to a motor vehicle accident on West Main Street. No injuries were reported. A tow truck was requested. A report was to follow.

8:44 p.m. A caller reported vehicles drag racing on Wood Street. Officer Derek Morton responded and the vehicles were gone upon his arrival.

11:31 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle struck a deer on West Elm Street. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and reported no personal injuries. The vehicle was subsequently towed.

November 10

1:29 p.m. Officers Matthew Santoro and Cody Normandin assisted the Fire Department in responding to a report of the odor of natural gas on Valentine Road. Eversource responded to the scene.

3:57 p.m. Officer Preston Mucciarone responded to a motor vehicle accident involving two cars on West Main Street. No personal injuries were reported.

One person refused medical attention.

6:11 p.m. An East Main Street caller requested to speak with an officer about a complaint. The caller stated she goes out for a walk daily and on this day she brought back a pine stick and other residents started a rumor that she was going to hit them with the stick.

The caller wanted to file a report and have an officer speak with the living facility’s staff. Officer Derek Morton responded and spoke with management. A report was to follow.

November 11

8:18 a.m. The Milford Police Department requested assistance locating a missing 16-year-old male. Officers Cody Normandin and Matthew Santoro responded and located the teen on Hayden Rowe Street. Milford officers responded to the scene.

8:31 a.m. An East Main Street caller reported her house keys were stolen. Officers Cody Normandin and Matthew Santoro responded and took a report.

10:51 a.m. A caller reported hearing a loud scream when passing Pond Street at Heidi Circle.

Officers Moira McGaffigan and Brendon Lyver responded and checked the area with a negative find on the scream source.

11:40 a.m. Officer Moira McGaffigan assisted a disabled motor vehicle on Ash Street.

12:54 p.m. Officers Matthew Santoro and Cody Normandin responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Hayden Rowe Street. No injuries were reported.

2:12 p.m. A concerned caller reported a pontoon boat with New Hampshire plates has been tied up for months on Pond Street. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and contacted the owner.

3:37 p.m. A caller reported youths skateboarding in the gazebo at the town common. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and checked the area with a negative find.

November 12

9:14 a.m. A walk-in spoke with Officer Brian Sanchioni about a driver who refused to stop for a traffic guard on Main Street.

7:23 p.m. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded along with the Fire Department to a report of the odor of natural gas on Pleasant Street. Readings came from a catch basin. Eversource was notified.

8:07 p.m. The Holliston Police Department requested officers to be on the lookout for a vehicle belonging to a person involved in a domestic dispute

in Holliston and requested a well-being check due to suicidal threats made. Officer Brian Sanchioni located and stopped the vehicle on West Main Street. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officers Ryan Polselli and Ashley Scionti responded as backup. A report was to follow.

10:33 p.m. A West Main Street resident complained of a neighbor using lawn equipment. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and spoke with the neighbor, who put away his leaf blower for the night.

November 13

12:59 p.m. A caller reported an erratic operator on West Main Street headed toward Upton. The Upton Police Department was notified.

4:34 p.m. Officer Robert Ekross responded to a minor motor vehicle accident on Main Street. No injuries were reported.

5:41 p.m. A South Mill Street caller reported from her second floor that someone was at her house knocking on the door. Officers Benjamin Stickney and Ryan Polselli responded and spoke to the individual, who was lost and at the wrong address.

6:10 p.m. A Huckleberry Road caller spoke with Officer Benjamin Stickney about a college scam call.

12:10 a.m. Officer Jay Deiana checked on a vehicle parked on Fruit Street and spoke with the driver, who was star gazing. He was advised to move along.

7:50 a.m. A caller reported construction workers on Main Street were not wearing masks per the governor’s orders. Officers Benjamin Stickney and Brittany Firth responded and spoke with the crew.

10:46 a.m. A caller reported a loose German Shepherd on Lincoln Street. Officer Cody Normandin responded and checked the area with a negative find.

2:23 p.m. A Stagecoach Way caller reported a couple with a campfire going in Whitehall State Park.

Officers Benjamin Stickney and Brian Sanchioni responded along with the Fire Department and located the couple, who extinguished the fire in their presence.

3:00 p.m. A caller reported a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on West Main Street. Officer Preston Mucciarone responded and took a report.

3:53 p.m. A North Street resident reported he heard gunshots close to his residence. Officer Preston Mucciarone responded and checked the area with a negative find.

4:23 p.m. An Eastview Road caller reported someone stole something off his truck. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and took a report.

5:50 p.m. An Ash Street resident reported a racially motivated sign abutting his property. Sergeant William Burchard responded and viewed the sign, which he stated was not racially motivated.

Obituaries Robert Henry Marlette died peacefully on Nov. 3 after living a full, rich life for 81 years. Bob was born in Oneonta, New York, the son of Herbert Theodore and Mildred Mabel Mather Marlette. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 42 years, Marilyn (Krause), and his first wife, Sarah (Pierce) Dragt. He was the devoted and adoring father to eight children: Laurie (Don) Rasbridge, John (Sheryl) Marlette, Jeff (Debi) Marlette, Tom (Kim) Marlette, Lynne Marlette, Gillian (Gennaro) DellaCioppa of Hopkinton, Scott Marlette and Lisa (Gavin) Grant. He had a deep faith in God and was active in church his entire life, most recently worshiping at Pilgrim Church in Sherborn. His love for music was cultivated by singing and ringing in the chancel and bell choirs at church and as a member of the Highland Glee Club. He served both of these organizations for years as a volunteer, mostly in finance. Bob had a passion for God’s creation, whether exploring the national parks of the North American West or local waterways in his kayak, hiking extensively throughout New England or chopping wood. He also enjoyed genealogy and family history as well as travel to Europe and the Middle East.

Donald R. Wilson, 85, of Phillipston and formerly of Hopkinton, died peacefully in his residence Nov. 15 after a long illness.

He was born in Englewood, New Jersey, on March 28, 1935, son of the late William H. and Caroline D. (Ebbighausen) Wilson and was a graduate of Tenafly High School. He later attended Fairleigh Dickinson University. Don proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Don founded Wilson Associates. He was an active member of Phillipston Historical Society, Queen Lake Campers Association, American Legion and VFW. An avid golfer, Don also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

His wife, Valerie (Kempskie) Wilson, died in 1999. He leaves his children, Jeannie Conti and husband Scott of Marlborough, Stephen W. Stephen Gilbert

Stephen Mark Gilbert of Salem, formerly of Newton and Hopkinton, passed away Nov. 5 after a lengthy illness at the age of 70. He was the son of Belle Gilbert Barron (z”l) and Manny Gilbert (z”l). He is survived by his sister, Laurie Gilbert Albert (David Albert), nephews Josh (Mandy) Albert and Daniel Albert, and niece Elizabeth Albert, the Barron/ Glazier stepfamily, former wife Sarah Lesher, many friends, and his canine companion, Bogart.

Steve was a former WCRB announcer and engineer in the 1970s, owner of the Newton Copy Shop for 28 years, and most recently an electronics engineer for CPI. Steve was a ham radio enthusiast (K1SG), classical music lover, dog rescuer, great friend and allaround nice guy.

A private funeral was graveside at Sharon Memorial Park, and an online shiva was planned. Arrangements were under the care of the Levine Chapel in Brookline.

Beverly Mastroianni After a tough yet courageous fight with cancer, Mrs. Beverly Louise (Page) Mastroianni, 85, of Milford passed away peacefully in her sleep with family by her side on Nov. 4. During her fight with cancer, Beverly was always determined, strongwilled and inspirational, precisely how she lived her life. She was the beloved wife of Leopoldo N. “Polly” Mastroianni.

Small in stature, she had great presence: a bundle of energy and strength. Beverly loved animals (except rhinoceroses), Fox News, crafts, sports, great food and visiting the coast of Maine. But mostly she loved her friends and family.

Her husband, Polly, could make her laugh like no other. Her four kids brought her constant joy and they consider themselves incredibly fortunate that she was their mother. She felt blessed to see all her kids have children of their own. Her grandchildren were a source of pride and happiness.

Beverly was one of a kind: authentic and always true to herself. She was fiercely loyal to those she loved. She was never one to mince words or hold back her feelings; you always knew where you stood with Beverly. But beneath her often tough exterior, she was a kind and extremely thoughtful woman. If you ran into Beverly, she often recalled your last conversation with her and would be extremely interested in what you had to say. She was sharp as a tack and never forgot a thing.

Beverly was born in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of the late Herbert and the late Mae (Shoppe) Page. As a young girl, she loved adventure and you could often find her ice skating or roller skating. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1952. After high school, she came to Massachu-

setts. She was employed as a young woman as a secretary at General Electric from 1953-62. It was at General Electric that she met her lifelong friend, Connie (“Midgie”/”Squiggie”) Caccavelli, who introduced Beverly to Polly. Beverly and Polly married in 1957. Beverly spent her life as a devoted wife and mother, raising her family. She was self-employed with her own cleaning business for over 20 years.

Along with her beloved husband of 63 years, she is survived by her four children: Paul Mastroianni and wife Noreen (Murphy) of Hopkinton, Raymond Mastroianni and wife Debbie (Micelotta) of Milford, Lisa Rivernider and husband Stephen of Mendon, and Michelle Roach and husband Brian of Newburyport; her seven grandchildren: Ryan, Emily and Christopher Mastroianni of Hopkinton; Jenna Mastroianni of Milford; Jonathan and Zachary Rivernider of Mendon; and Mia Joy Roach of Newburyport; one brother: Stanley Page of Winter Haven, Florida; and one sister: Elizabeth Fleury of Bayport, Long Island, New York.

Beverly was the sister of the late Cedric Page, the late Herbert Page and the late Kathleen Glenn.

In accordance with her wishes, Beverly was to be cremated. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Mastroianni family’s concern for the well-being of family members and friends, funeral services (under the care of the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home in Milford) were private with no visiting hours.
