D’Urso remembered for dedication to town, children

ommunity leaders reflected on the years of dedication to all facets of Hopkinton displayed by Frank D’Urso Jr., who died unexpectedly Nov. 21 at the age of 57.

D’Urso, who lived in town for 22 years, was heavily involved in local government. He might be best known for being a founding member of the Sustainable Green Committee, for which he served from 2008 through 2020, as he was passionate about preserving the environment.

D’Urso, a computer science consultant by profession, began his volunteer work as a member of the Civic Engagement Committee in 2003, serving for a year. He started the Sustainable Green Committee five years later, serving for 12 years. During this time, D’Urso also was a member of the Conservation Commission from 2011-15 and the Planning Board from 2015-20.

Most recently, D’Urso served as town constable.

A

Hopkinton High School student’s compassion and his mother’s hobby have combined into an effort to spread messages of inclusivity through a home T-shirt business.

Jen Halliday said her 14-year-old son, Dimitri, better known as Dee, began creating shirts with unique designs about seven years ago as holiday gifts.

Silk-screening has been Jen’s hobby for years, and she saw this as a means of incorporating Dee’s artistic skills.

“It just kind of snowballed from there,” she explained.

The family moved to Hopkinton about three years ago from Cape Breton Island on Canada’s east coast due to her Dee’s Tees | 6

A New Year

Devoted dogs seek new home D

uring the peak of the pandemic, it was easy for shelters such as Hopkinton’s Baypath Humane Society to get dogs and cats adopted. Many people were stuck at home and had more time on their hands, so they looked for companionship from pets.

It’s more difficult now, which means shelters have to get creative to get people’s attention.

Baypath has been doing just that. JERRY SPAR The other hurdle is that the dogs have become very close since they bonded as puppies, and the shelter determined that they should be adopted together.

“The two dogs came to us as an owner surrender,” explained Kathy Lundgren from Baypath’s Outreach Committee. “It wasn’t a behavioral reason; it was more of a change of lifestyle. We noted right away that they were very bonded. They always look for each other, and they cry when they are separated. It’s heartbreaking.

“We’re just looking to place them in a home together. They’re not hyper dogs, but they’re big dogs, so we know it’s a big ask.”

In an effort to spark some interest, Baypath decided the two lovers should get married. For a week, the shelter posted dozens of photos on its Facebook page of the dogs preparing for the Nov. 20 event. There was a bachelor and bachelorette party, a day of beauty for Lola, a ring bearer, a ceremony and a reception.

There has been some interest in the dogs, who have been at the shelter for couple of months, but no takers for both of them as of yet.

With people getting back into somewhat regular routines, that’s not a complete surprise.

“It’s definitely not as strong as it was [last year],” Lundgren said. “It was gangbusters there for a very long time. It definitely has died down. It seems that more people are getting back into work, kids are getting back into school.”

On a positive note, concerns about “pandemic puppies” being returned once people got back to normal schedules has not been a major problem at Baypath.

“We’re starting to see a few rehomings, there is a small percentage that is coming back, and we were afraid of that, but it’s not what we were predicting and what the ASPCA and Humane Society were predicting,” Lundgren said.

Baypath does its part to ensure a smooth adoption process by including a consultation with its trainer as well as one week of free phone/online consultations with a national training service called GoodPup. And in December the organization plans to start a campaign to promote training tips.

“Starting December 14th we’re going to post 12 ways to keep your dog or cat off the naughty list,” Lundgren said.

K of C hosts free throw contest The annual Knights of Columbus Bishop Rice Council 4822 free throw contest will be held Jan. 4, following the varsity boys basketball game between Ashland and Hopkinton at Hopkinton High School.

The event always gets a good turnout from Hopkinton youth basketball players and others (ages 9-14), who shoot free throws to determine winners in a variety of age groups.

Trophies and medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each division, and winners move on to compete at the district level.

Public input sought on trails I

am a member of the Hopkinton Trails Club. Since forming in 2005, we’ve developed major trails (including the Center Trail), assisted in the creation of the town’s Trail Coordination & Management Committee, LETTERS TO and led over 130 walks introduce the town’s THE EDITOR to trails to its residents.

On Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., Hopkinton’s Upper Charles Trail Committee (UCTC) will hold a public meeting at the Senior Center to present its proposal for the Upper Charles Trail route through Hopkinton.

Many Hopkinton residents are familiar with the trail’s path in Milford and Holliston, and on our walks we often have folks ask if Hopkinton will connect to it. That’s a telling question, because it means that the work of Hopkinton’s committee, which was formed in August 2012, is not well known. Only preliminary proposals have been released previously (displays at Polyarts, for example). This will be the first formal opportunity for residents to see the plans and comment.

For residents who remember the first Elementary School Building Committee, this might sound familiar. That group did its work within its own committee meetings, then presented a plan for three district schools at Town Meeting. The town’s reaction was overwhelmingly negative and it was soundly voted down. A new committee was formed and followed a much more open and participatory approach. The result was the widely admired Marathon School.

The UCTC recently made its pro-

posal public. The Trails Club has been reviewing it, and we have concerns. It crosses Hayden Rowe Street several times, requiring traffic to stop multiple times in that section when the trail is in use. The route also passes along the edge of the Marathon School property and near town land that might be used for an Elmwood School replacement.

The superintendent of schools raised concerns about this at a recent School Committee meeting.

Admittedly, UCTC members have had a difficult task and they’ve done their best to come up with a solution. But there ARE other options for the route.

To be sure, those options have their own issues, but they should be presented and residents given the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of each approach.

Both the UCTC’s proposed route and an alternative route may be viewed on the Trails Club’s website (hopkintontrailsclub.com). We encourage town residents to review both and then attend the meeting on Dec. 8 at the Senior Center.

HCA honors GRLA’s Richardson S

cott Richardson, president of Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects, received the inaugural Founder’s Philanthropy Award from the Hopkinton Center for the Arts at the HCA Founder’s Celebration held earlier this fall.

Live4Evan sets lofty goals to help families of hospital patients

van Girardi was a member of the Hopkinton High School class of 2007. He was born with a congenital heart defect, and he passed away from an arrhythmia 11 years ago.

Born in California, Evan moved to Hopkinton with his family to be near Boston Children’s Hospital. During their time at BCH, they learned about families having trouble finding inexpensive places to stay while their children were being treated.

After Evan’s passing, some of his high school friends and fellow graduates, Jack Nealon, Whitney Mullen and Shane Lavoie, wanted to honor him.

In 2013, Evan’s friends founded Live4Evan, an organization that provides housing to families while their children are being treated at Boston

Children’s Hospital.

“We heard stories of people staying in cars, sleeping at the bedside at the hospital, in a chair,” said Lavoie, treasurer of Live4Evan. “It can be pretty upsetting to hear about that.”

Currently, the organization leases four apartments at the Longwood Galleria in Boston. The fourth apartment opened Nov. 1. The apartment building is connected to Boston Children’s Hospital.

“People do not have to leave the [building] in order to get to the hospital to be bedside with their child,” said Lavoie.

The organization hopes to have 10 apartments within the next four years.

To help achieve that goal, Solect Energy, a solar energy company based in Hopkinton, is matching up to $25,000 in donations that Live4Evan raises this year.

Live4Evan since its founding. The daughter of Solect CEO Ken Driscoll went to Hopkinton High School when Evan and the organization’s founders attended.

Affordable patient-family housing is in high demand. Families for treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital often have to stay for an extended period of time. The average length a family lives in a Live4Evan apartment is around six weeks, but a few families have stayed for six months, with one family needing to stay nine months.

“Some families really have nowhere to go, and maybe they’ll stay in a hotel for some period of time,” said Lavoie. “But if they cannot afford it, they cannot do that.”

Live4Evan keeps one apartment free for families who cannot afford the cost, and the other three apartments are $40 per night. Families who stay in a hotel often have to spend around

$300 per night.

The organization has helped more than 50 families. Because Live4Evan’s apartments are at full capacity, 75 percent of applicants are being turned away.

“Four years from now, we want to have 10 apartment units open so that we can really satisfy that demand,” said Lavoie. “We’re very thankful to Ken Driscoll and Solect Energy for supporting us in this.”

This year ’s goal is to raise $100,000. Live4Evan is encouraging people to commit to a recurring donation (visit live4evan.org/donate for information) to help with the monthly costs associated with leasing an apartment, including rent and utilities.

Said Lavoie: “Something that speaks a lot to who [Evan] was as a person is that all these years later, people are still coming out to support him and honor his memory.”

My father, John McBride, was the star running back for that team. He actually dated and eventually married Carol, a cheerleader at the time for Ashland.

The article mentions Hopkinton won the Thanksgiving Day game 32-20, however it should be noted that my father scored four touchdowns (with another 72 yard touchdown called back because of a penalty) and was carried off the field.

And although the Ashland Police chief warned the kids not to celebrate in Ashland that night, my father was invited by my mother to an Ashland dance, and the Ashland players actually cheered for him when he came in (much different time).

He went on to play semi-pro football, lived in Ashland and moved to Hopkinton in 1981, where he has lived ever since, raising four children (three who live in Hopkinton) and surrounded by many grandkids. Since retiring from the power company 30 years ago, his passion has been golf, a very good golfer, numerous holes-in-one and many times shooting his age in golf at Highfields Country Club.

So if you see this “rebel” who defied the Ashland Police chief out and about, ask him to relive the 1955 season, but please do me a favor and do not ask my mother, as she has heard the story many times — and her piercing blue eyes can shoot daggers (LOL).

husband’s job. Before the move, Jen had been a volunteer for her local society for children with disabilities since her younger son, Ciaran, is on the autism spectrum. The organization always is trying to raise funds for programs like after-school care and summer camps, and the shirt sales became a means of support.

“We did a fundraiser for them, and it has just been one of those things that we did for them,” Jen said. “All of the proceeds went to the society.”

Neither Jen nor Dee had an original intention to create Dee’s Tees or make anything beyond gifts, Jen explained.

“Dee was really interested in fashion, and he liked the idea that you could put anything you want on a T-shirt,” Jen said. “With Dee’s Tees, there was always something we could speak about.

And people really seemed to like what we were doing.”

One of those people was Amanda McDougall, who became mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality last November.

When she started out as a councilor there, she was chosen to serve on Nova Scotia’s solid waste resource management committee. However, Dee — then only 8 years old — perceived that she was being bullied by her older male colleagues.

In response, he wrote her a handwritten note of encouragement and sent her a T-shirt with the words “Amanda McDougall for Mayor” with a drawing of her trademark horn-rimmed glasses.

“She wrote back to Dee and said that if she ever ran for mayor, Dee could design her T-shirts,” Jen said. “And she did. She ordered 300 shirts.”

Dee produces the designs for the shirts while Jen imports them into a computer for the silk-screening process.

Jen never intended to become interested in silk-screening. When she was younger, she lived with her brother in Toronto while he was studying art.

She came upon a silk-screening kit and discovered her own creative side. Her career in Canada was an orthotist and prosthetist, making artificial limbs and braces for people with disabilities.

The most recent success story for Dee’s Tees was being able to create a shirt design for Hopkinton Middle School Principal Alan Keller for his 2021 Boston Marathon run. Keller ran to raise money for the school’s Desire

to Inspire program, which focuses on the themes of leadership, endurance and tenacity. Keller also began selling the T-shirts in support of the program.

“That was really the first big feather in our cap since we moved here,” Jen explained.

Dee’s Tees (facebook.com/deestees2016) had a big order in early 2020, when Dee designed shirts for the six classroom teams at Hopkins School.

They were supposed to be sold at a basketball game in March.

“Two days before the game, the world shut down,” Jen explained, noting the family went back to Canada for four months. Money from the pre-sale went to the school to buy personal protective equipment.

Jen said she has become deeply connected to Hopkinton, particularly because of her involvement with the 1822 program for students with disabilities who benefit from additional vocational and independent living supports.

“Young adults can get experience with different skills that will help them get employment in the future,” she said.

“In June, the kids in the program made two different designs for T-shirts for Suicide Prevention Month in September.

They had almost 200 orders.”

The slogan was, “Life is better with you in it.”

The money raised will help the students be able to run a business out of the 18-22 program.

She noted that the shirt designs are not perfect, which adds to their meaning. They are traced by students with disabilities, so every shirt is unique.

“We came up with the template, but they put their own flair to it,” Jen said.

“The response has been fantastic.”

She envisioned the students creating a business that would support local shops by making shirts or even greeting cards.

“Dee’s Tees has helped to create something better for the future,” Jen said. “You’re helping people and spreading awareness.”

While Jen was excited about the momentum, she noted that Dee “doesn’t like getting recognition for what he is doing and is painfully shy.”

“He’s proud of what he’s doing, but he doesn’t want people to make a big fuss,” Jen noted.

St. Paul’s Artisan and Craft Fair Dec. 11

Knights of Columbus free throw contest Jan. 4

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (61 Wood Street) will host a professional, juried Artisan and Craft Fair on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the church hall. There will be jewelry, pottery, woodcrafts, stained glass, paintings, decor items and more. There also will be opportunity drawings from each crafter.

Hopkinton’s history tied to Magunco settlement

A

s residents celebrated Thanksgiving this year, the Hopkinton Public Library had on display copies of 18th century documents relating to the Native American settlement on the land that became Hopkinton.

In 1669, Reverend John Eliot, a Puritan missionary to local Native Americans, developed the settlement first known as Magwonkkommok, then Magunco, and now known as Hopkinton — as well as Ashland and parts of Holliston and Upton.

Magunco was tract land — land not allocated for settlers and previously occupied by Nipmucs. This land was selected

by Eliot to settle a “civil” community. Magunco was Eliot’s seventh such town and was created using an artificial settlement of “praying Indians.” Artificial settlements were formed during this time by housing a group of Native Americans in a certain area in order to boost the land’s value and create life there. The Magunco settlement began with 11 families, also considered 55 “souls.”

The Nipmucs were guided by Pomhamon, who called the town Magunco, roughly translated to “the place of great trees.” The settlement had a teacher named Job and included religious members and farmers. The residents followed civil orders, worshipped God and

observed Sabbath, following the other praying communities.

As the settlement was developing, King Philip’s War began. King Philip’s War occurred during the early interactions between indigenous tribes of New England colonies and the European colonists. Indigenous tribes, rebelling against the English takeover of their lands and society, targeted the colonies in small attacks. In Framingham on Feb. 1, 1676, nine members of the Earnes family were killed or taken captive in an altercation that was called the “Eames Massacre.” Six members of the Magunco Nipmucs were caught in the attack, and three were executed.

After the 14-month war ended in 1676, it was decided that the remaining Magunco Indians would join the tribe native to Natick. There is no record of any of the original Magunco settlers returning to the land that now is Hopkinton.

After the town was bought by trustees of Harvard College, people were allowed to settle for a fee. The trustees named the town after the late Edward Hopkins, who had left a large sum of money to be invested in New England land.

Individuals aged 60 and older, veterans or those homebound due to a disability should call the Outreach Department at the Senior Center at least three business days in advance of the desired day of travel at 508-497-9730, ext. 1615, for assistance in scheduling a ride.

Obituaries Beverly Dube Beverly (Rounsevell) Dube, 70, of Mattapoisett died Nov. 15 at home. She was the wife of Dennis Dube.

Born and raised in Freetown, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ethel (Crossley) Rounsevell. She lived in Mattapoisett most of her life.

Beverly enjoyed cooking, shopping and going out to eat with her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; her children, Evan Dube and wife Christy of Marion, and Laura Cohen and husband Phillip of Hopkinton; three siblings; and her grandchildren, Alexandra, Madeleine, Charles, Oliver and Emilia.

Private funeral services were under the care of Saunders-Dwyer Funeral Homes.

Carolyn Campbell Carolyn Ruth (Degler) Campbell, 86, of Hopkinton and formerly Holliston, passed away Nov. 22 in Hopkinton. Born in Dover, New Hampshire, and raised in Durham, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late professor Carroll M. and Ruth (Loring) Degler.

Carolyn attended Northfield Mount Hermon School and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s in social work. She spent the beginning of her lengthy career with the American Red Cross, where she worked in administration as well as disaster relief across the United States. Her affable nature, compassion and personal touch led her to serve in a management role in the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training, from which she eventually retired.

Carolyn will be missed dearly by her brother, Dr. Robert Degler and his wife, Carol. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Jane Keltonic (Brad), Scott Degler (Melanie) and Kent Degler (Sherri).

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at Lake Grove Cemetery in Holliston. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton.

delphia, he was the youngest son of the late Louise (Rosenberger) and Charles Vincent Ivester and was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Moser, in 1994. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to Dolores (Sikora) Ivester.

A 1972 graduate of Norristown High School in Pennsylvania, David attended Penn State University in Philadelphia. Eager to pursue his electronics career, he worked for Leeds and Northrup, Memorex, Amdahl Corporation and retired from EMC in 2015 as a systems integration engineer. He thoroughly enjoyed working in computer engineering for 42 years, with his career moving the family to New Jersey, Maryland, California and Massachusetts.

With his ever-increasing expertise, David traveled the U.S. throughout his career as well as overseas to Australia, Hong Kong and Ireland. In recent years, David took pleasure in traveling to Tarpon Springs, Florida, several times a year, owning and renovating two homes with Dolores. Ever the engineer, David always would be involved in projects, inside and out, whether at one of his homes or his sons’ houses. He became “Pop Pop” in 2015 with the birth of his first grandchild and loved that next chapter of his life.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by two sons, Matthew Ivester and wife Liliane (Klein) of Melrose, and Steven Ivester and wife Ashley (McPherson) of Grafton; his older brother, Charles Ivester and wife Catherine of Norristown, Pennsylvania; four nieces and nephews; and six loving grandchildren, George, John and James of Melrose, and Alaina, Giana and Teigan of Grafton.

Dee Crowley

Dolores T. ( P o w er) “Dee” Crowley of Hopkinton, formerly of Dedham and Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away on

Nov. 23 at the age of 97.

She was the beloved wife of the late Paul Crowley and devoted mother of Dennis P. Crowley and his wife, Mary, of Medway, and the late Janice Ann Crowley. She also was a loving grandmother of Dennis Paul and his wife, Chelsa, Jonathan Ryan and his wife, Jaclyn, Katie Collins and her husband, Brian; great-grandmother of Madelyn, Merritt, Via, Willa, Mars, Foster and Samus; and loyal sister of Stephen Power and his wife, Eileen Power, of Punta Gorda, Florida. Dee also is survived by her good and loyal friend for 57 years, Anne Sheridan.

Dee and Anne were referred to as the “Q Tip Sisters.”

Dee’s career as an insurance broker spanned over 40 years. She was a longtime member of the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Women. She was an original and devoted parishioner of St. Susanna’s Church in Dedham.

Gam, as her grandchildren called her, loved to winter in Florida and was involved in many activities. She made many friends with her happy and friendly ways. She was an avid card player who always was willing to challenge anyone in a game of cribbage. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 29 at St. Mary’s Church of Holliston. Interment was private. Services were under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston.

12 in Milford. Born in Wiscasset, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Georgia (Lord) Robson. She was a resident of Hopkinton since 1934.

She was a 1939 graduate of Hopkinton High School and worked for GE-Timex & Telechron in Ashland. She was very active in the union, serving as secretary and later becoming the first woman president of Local 205, United Electrical Work-

ers. She also was a long-time hostess at Carbone’s Restaurant in Hopkinton.

She is survived by her children, Georgia Ladeau of East Falmouth, Linda Thomas of Rangely, Maine, and Claudia Garner and husband Bruce of Rangely, Maine, as well as her sisterin-law, Marcia Robson of Hopkinton. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two greatgreat-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her daughter, Mary Hayward.

May she rest in peace until we meet again.

Francis D’Urso Francis John D’Urso Jr., 57, of Hopkinton passed away unexpectedly at his home o n N o v.

21. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Rita (Orlando) and Francis John D’Urso.

Frank graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in Lynn in 1982 and Northeastern University in 1987, and earned his master’s degree from Cambridge College in 2003. He was very active in Hopkinton town politics, serving as a constable and member of the Planning Board. He also had been a member of the Keefe Tech School Board.

Frank was an avid Boston sports fan; he especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox. A self-taught pianist, Frank was a passionate music enthusiast. He had a large collection of comic books, a pastime he took pleasure in. Most importantly, Frank was a family man. He enjoyed time spent with his family, was a Cub Scout leader and was especially proud of his son becoming an Eagle Scout and his daughter’s artwork. Frank also was a Mason, and in his youth was a member of DeMolay International.

Frank is survived by his father, Francis D’Urso Sr. and partner Beryl Clarke; his children, Francis John D’Urso III and Lucy D’Urso; his siblings, Gina Marie O’Toole and husband Mark, Lisa Marie D’Urso and Michael Orlando; the mother of his children, Emily D’Urso; his nephew, Mark O’Toole Jr. and wife Alicia; his niece, Jacklyn O’Toole; as well as his aunts and cousins. He is predeceased by his mother, Rita (Orlando) D’Urso.

Maureen A. (Kelly) Bowser, “Moe,” 56, left us way too soon on Nov. 15 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was best friend and soulmate to Kevin Bridge of Hopkinton. She was born in Marlborough, the daughter of the late George and Kathleen (Teahan) Kelly. She raised her family in Marlborough and resided in Hopkinton for the past 21 years.

Besides Kevin, she is survived by her son, Shawn Bowser of Hudson, her daughters, Shannon Bowser of Fall River and Sarah Bowser of Columbus, Georgia. She was predeceased by the children’s father, Dennis Bowser. She also is survived by her sister, Kathleen Kelly of Marlborough, and her brother, Kevin Kelly and wife Susan of Taunton. She also leaves her four grandchildren, Kasey, Maddy, Alex and Caleb, and many nieces and nephews who all loved and greatly adored her.

Maureen worked many years at the Digital/HP campus in the facilities organization, where she made lots of lifelong friends. Her more recent years were spent working in pharmaceuticals and information technology facilities where she developed friendships with many of her colleagues.

Moe especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, including many birthday celebrations at Embassy Suites. She treasured their many outings to Canobie Lake Park and all the holiday gatherings at the lake. Moe loved summer vacations to Hampton Beach and York Beach, but nothing beat the vacations she and Kevin took to Myrtle Beach each fall. She thoroughly loved living on the lake in Hopkinton — the recreational fun, kayaking and boat rides, the peaceful surroundings, the changes of seasons and the awesome sunsets. She made so many friends over the years — all of whom she truly loved.

Maureen will be most remembered for her infectious and contagious laugh, her big smile and her sincere generosity to everyone. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

At her request, and to honor her wishes, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of life may be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Short & Rowe Funeral Home in Marlborough.

Norman J. Han, 50, of Hopkinton passed away from esophageal cancer on N o v. 2 9 .

His passing was peaceful, surrounded by family at home. Born in Seoul, South Korea, he was the son of Dr. Dae Suk and Duk Hwa Han. Norman moved to the United States as a toddler and lived in New York, New Hampshire and New Jersey before settling in Massachusetts.

In addition to his parents, Norman is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Han, his daughter, Megan, and his sister, Julie Han of San Jose, California.

He also leaves behind his sisters-inlaw, Kate Faulkner and husband Colin of Bedford, and Amy Matheson and husband Tom of Tucson, Arizona, his nephew, Jack Faulkner, and nieces, Fiona and Sabrina Matheson, as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins.

Norman received his master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University and worked in healthcare policy for the federal government before moving to the Massachusetts House Committee on Ways and Means, serving under several administrations. He developed budget and policy recommendations for MassHealth and the Group Insurance Commission. Most recently, he was the director of healthcare policy and research for the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans.

Norman enjoyed spending time with family, traveling and good food.

He was a lifelong fan of all sports, especially basketball, soccer, baseball and football. He served on the board for the Transportation Children’s Center in Boston while his daughter was enrolled in its preschool program.

A funeral service was held Dec. 4 at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton. Interment was to be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Megan Han’s college fund. Ronald Simmons Ronald A. Simmons, 70, died Nov. 10 in Milford. He was the husband of Ann (Ferguson) Simmons. Born in Framingham and raised in Hopkinton, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Elizabeth L. (Sables) Simmons.

He worked as a local landscaper and handyman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his siblings, Raymond E. Simmons III of Mendon, Jeffrey W. Simmons of Florida, Paul D. Simmons of Upton, and Deborah Sullivan of Milford. He is predeceased by his sister Gail White.

A memorial service was held Nov. 27 at the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home in Hopkinton.

D’Urso remembered for dedication to community, children D’Urso | from page 1

In addition to participating on town boards, D’Urso was a member of the Keefe Regional Technical School’s School Committee from 2012-15.

He cared deeply about the youth of the town, volunteering his time with Boy Scouts Troop 4, Hopkinton Little League and Hopkinton Youth Soccer.

“He was such a memorable person, so full of life,” said Planning Board Chair Gary Trendel, who served on the Planning Board with D’Urso for about a year and a half. “His energy and passion made him special.”

Trendel described D’Urso as “a personal champion for solar energy.”

“Solar energy is a really polarizing issue in this town,” Trendel noted.

“Frank was always interested in solar energy. He was so passionate about it.

He wanted to put solar panels on all new developments.”

D’Urso also was “a person who spoke from the heart,” according to Trendel.

“He was a man of principle,” he explained. “What was great about Frank was that he didn’t care where he was.

He would speak his mind.”

Select Board member Muriel Kramer served with D’Urso on the Planning Board for several years.

“Frank really had a great heart,” she said. “He always jumped in and contributed.”

Kramer recalled a time when she was serving as deputy town moderator at Town Meeting, where D’Urso volunteered to be a counter.

“There was one time when I couldn’t go, and he stepped in,” she said. “He was always willing to do whatever needed to be done.

“One of the things I would really love to elevate is that Frank held deeply democratic ideals,” Kramer continued, noting that they served together on the Hopkinton Democratic Town Committee. “He participated in all levels of government. He was accessible to everyone, no matter what their beliefs were.”

As dedicated as D’Urso was to community service, Kramer said he was especially proud of his son and daughter.

“I got to know him through the scouts with my son,” she said. “He was always talking about his children.

He loved his kids, and he also loved his pets.”

Fellow Select Board member Amy Ritterbusch said D’Urso’s death was “such a shock” because he was so young and constantly active in the community.

“I remember when the Sustainable Green Committee was started years ago,” she said. “He was instrumental in getting a grant that allowed the town to switch to energy efficient light switches.”

She described him as a man who “liked to speak up.”

“He was very passionate about what he believed in,” Ritterbusch said.

“Town Meeting is not going to be the same without him.”

She also recalled D’Urso being proud of his children, always wanting to show a photo of them.

“Frank was a good man in every sense of the phrase,” said friend Patrick Mahon. “He was a loving, devoted and

doting dad who reveled in his children’s accomplishments and successes.

“However, what stood out about Frank was that in the realm of politics, where even local contests can get toxic, Frank personified the thought that reasonable people can passionately disagree, but they don’t have to be disagreeable about it,” he continued.

“We were often on different sides of political issues in town, and we would talk/argue about them, but at the end of the conversation, we could share a laugh, shake our heads about our histrionics, and then sincerely wish each other well.”

Mahon said that he read in a Facebook post from D’Urso that he was feeling “under the weather.” But Mahon never expected D’Urso to pass away.

“It reminds me once again to cherish and appreciate friends and family,” he added, “as tomorrow is promised to no one.”

Neighbors John, Julie and Raelyn Ford wrote in an email that D’Urso was a big sports fan,. They recalled spending afternoons watching Bruins and Patriots games with him while their children played.

“Frank was a great dad, always doing things with Lucy and Frank, and adored his dog, TJ. When our kids were young, we always went out trick-or-treating together, so much fun!

Frank loved his Marvel superheroes; he would dress up with his kids and have just as much fun!

“Frank was dedicated to Hopkinton,” the email continued. “Even when debate arose, he never had an unkind word for anyone who may have had a difference of opinion, a rarity now. He will be missed.”

Kelly Karp served with D’Urso on the Planning Board, where she said D’Urso “always had the town’s best interests at heart.”

“He was not afraid to voice his opinions and ask the tough questions,” she said. “I admired him for always staying true to his beliefs and values.

Frank will be sorely missed.”

“We all know Frank’s dedication to the town,” said friend John Ferrari.

“While he was an active Democrat and I was an active Republican, I don’t think we ever had a political conversation per se.

“Frank was simply, in the purest form, a man dedicated to his children and his town,” he added. “If he supported a cause or position, he was first in line and most vocal in support. There was heart in everything he did. He will be missed by all in Hopkinton.”

In new book, local yoga instructor teaches that spirituality is universal

itu Kapur wanted to bring eastern wisdom to western yoga practice.

“Spirituality is not that different,” Kapur said about her approach to yoga in her first book, “Teach Yoga Touch Hearts.”

“We are all striving or trying to find the same things in our lives.”

Kapur, who has lived in Hopkinton for nearly 18 years, owned Sohum Yoga and Meditation Studio in Westborough and still teaches yoga virtually. She selfpublished her book in October and said her aim was to teach that yoga is about more than opening your body. It’s about opening your mind.

“I would say yoga is the state of mind where you can bring your body, breath and spirit together,” said Kapur, borrowing from the word’s etymology. To “yog,” Kapur explained, means to join together.

and from there she guides readers through the eight limbs of the Yoga Sutra. Kapur takes her audience from moral and ethical values, to physical practice, to concentration.

“I try to make it such that people can pick it up, at any time of the day, late at night, read one page, feel good about the way things are and then go to bed,” she said. “It’s not like a textbook.”

Kapur said she tried to lean away from the dense texts that she has found on yoga, but that doesn’t mean she leaves anything out. After explaining the eight limbs, the writer goes on to address koshas, the layers of the body, and chakras, focal points in your body.

But it’s her final two chapters that lit up Kapur’s face as she described her work.

“I find them wonderful,” said Kapur.

“One is poems from around the world.

And the last one is prayers from around the world.”

Kapur, who will appear with her book at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts on Dec. 14, grew up in India, where she learned yoga in school and knew yogis to be spiritual, “saint-like” people. In America, she says, yogis are depicted as nearly anyone who regularly practices yoga.

“I don’t even call myself a yogi because it has a deeper meaning,” she said.

She’s seeing a shift, though, in western yoga practice. Many yoga instructors are delving deeper into the origins and traditions of yoga practice, but Kapur said she worries the learning isn’t being shared with their students.

Kapur ties the Gita, an ancient Hindu scripture, into her book.

“I wanted to share that with my readers, how deep this philosophy of yoga is in the whole Indian Hindu culture,” she said.

Once at a yoga retreat, Kapur went searching through a table of books, looking for one that offered this same background, but in a language digestible for beginners.

“I kind of blurted out to myself, ‘Gee, I’m trying to find this book, and it’s not here,’ ” she recalled. Kapur said a stranger standing next to her offered words that would sit with her for four years.

“She was like, ‘Well, because you are going to write it.’ ” It was only during the pandemic, when her yoga classes became Zoom classes, and she found more time to be at home with herself, that she endeavored to create a book that joined together universal spirituality with western yoga practice.

That’s why the final two chapters share poems and prayers from around the world.

“These poems, or prayers, are very universal in their nature and their theme,” said Kapur. Lines from the Gita share pages with the poems of John O’Donohue, an Irish poet and priest who passed in 2008.

“It’s spanning the cultures and the times, so that more readers can identify with spirituality,” said Kapur.

While she spends the better part of “Teach Yoga Touch Hearts” honing in on the origins of yoga, her point is that the spirituality found in the practice is universal.

“Whether it was a poet thousands of years ago or a poet right now,” Kapur said, “they’re all talking about finding inspiration in nature and in animals and finding joy in day-to-day life.”

She hopes that by including writers from different cultures, more readers can connect to the spirituality intrinsic to yoga.

“These writers, who may be coming from their culture, are saying the same thing that was said thousands of years ago in India,” she said.

PJB seeks help to fund new facility Project Just Because announced earlier this year that it planned to move into its own facility after its lease expires at its current location next fall. Volunteers spread wood chips at Whitehall The Hopkinton Open Space Preservation Commission reported that volunteers from the Friends of Whitehall, including Margaret Mighton, Mary McManus, Paula Gedraitis, Tom Haldoupis, Nancy Weckback, Jim Weckback and Ken Loderick, spread wood chips in the parking area at the Whitehall Conservation area last month.

The wood chips, donated by Joe Regan, will decompose and get crushed into the ground by vehicles, and that is expected to help keep the soil around the sugar maple loose, which will be beneficial for the tree.

HHS football blanked

by Ashland The Hopkinton High School football team closed out its season Nov. 25 with a 43-0 loss at Ashland in the revival of the Thanksgiving Day rivalry.

After a scoreSPORTS ROUNDUP less first quarter, Ashland put up 15 points in the second period. The Clockers then scored 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters to win going away.

Hopkinton ended its season — the first under coach Mark Sanborn — with a record of 3-8. Ashland lost only once — in the Division 4 quarterfinals. …

Simoes earns spot in coaches Hall of Fame Hopkinton High School baseball coach Steve Simoes, who guided the Hillers to the Division 2 state championship game the past two seasons, was named to the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame 2022 class. …

Shawn Mato was named coach of the HHS alpine ski team for this season.

An Idaho native, Mato skied competitively in high school in New Jersey and then at the University of New Hampshire. A U.S. Ski Level 100 coach, Mato has been coaching various ski teams since 1999 and currently coaches for the Franconia Ski Club at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire.

Former Hillers have collegiate success Hopkinton’s Lexi Hasbrouck, a sophomore on the Trinity College women’s soccer team, was named to the New England Small College Athletic Association first team based on her play this fall.

Hasbrouck started all 16 games in the backfield for the Bantams, who finished at 7-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in NESCAC play. …

Sydney MacDonald received Liberty League honorable mention after playing 17 games for the Vassar College women’s soccer team. The junior midfielder had a team-high 15 starts, and recorded a goal in a 2-1 victory over Montclair State on Sept. 8. …

Natalie Shambo was named a Scholastic All American by National Collegiate Rugby for her play on the Endicott College spring 7’s team last season. Shambo, who graduated summa cum laude in May with a degree in nursing, also played with the fall 15’s all four years at the school. She was a co-captain as a senior. Shambo now works as a registered nurse for UMass Memorial Hospital in Marlborough.

Schools HHS starts another mask-optional trial period

F

ollowing the success of the mask-optional trial period for vaccinated students and staff at Hopkinton High School over the first three weeks in November, the School Committee voted 4-0-1 at its Dec. 2 meeting to implement a second trial period, running Dec. 6-23.

Superintendent Carol Cavanaugh gave a report citing the feedback from a survey of 428 participants, including students, administrators and staff, that included many positive aspects about the ability to learn and communicate while unmasked.

Positive comments included 325 responses that said individuals were “able to see, evaluate and communicate through facial expressions,” while 325 said their hearing improved because voices were not muffled by masks. Lip reading to improve comprehension was helpful for 213 respondents.

On the downside, 91 respondents reported that unmasking made them feel unsafe. Fifty-one had to move away from those who were unmasked, which they said made teaching, learning and communicating more challenging. Seventy-two participants said they felt they had to justify their use of masks, which made them feel marginalized at times. Seventy-eight said that unmasking didn’t improve their communicating, teaching or learning experience.

Among general comments submitted, there was a statement about students being respectful of teachers who have young children, have health issues or were pregnant and preferred that students wear masks. Another said that the trial period went well because there were no cases of COVID-19 being reported. One response suggested that the mask mandate be continued through the holiday season, while another response said the policy was divisive.

The superintendent noted that the recent outbreak at Elmwood School was not related to the mask-optional policy at the high school. She also

— School Committee Member Joe Markey said that the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) announced that mask use will be required by players, coaches and officials at winter sporting events, a policy that was not in place when the trial went into effect.

Cavanaugh added that Hopkinton received a commendation for the trial mask-optional period from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which instituted the state requirement of an 80 percent vaccination rate for students and staff to be eligible to waive the mask mandate policy.

Chair Nancy Cavanaugh asked if there had been any feedback from the Board of Health or Health Department Director Shaun McAuliffe about the trial.

“I think [McAuliffe] had some trepidation, as you’ll remember,” the superintendent responded.

District awaits word on Elmwood A t the Dec. 2 School Committee meeting, Superintendent Carol Cavanaugh announced that all the documentation for the Elmwood School building project proposal has been submitted to the Massachusetts School Building SCHOOLS Authority (MSBA) for approval.

On Dec. 15, the district will learn NOTEBOOK if the proposal is eligible to enter a feasibility period.

If that happens, the district will begin a study for the project as well as a complete facilities and educational programming study. Public outreach will begin at that point.

Superintendent sets goals Also at the Dec. 2 School Committee meeting, Cavanaugh outlined her goals for the district.

She noted that as the district has emerged from the pandemic, student learning data should be used to drive instruction. A key area to examine will be literacy growth and achievement at the secondary level.

Greater proficiency in diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice was another key area of focus. She is working on diversifying the workforce at all levels and including diversity, equity and inclusion in the curriculum at every school.

“I’m happy to hear the educational benefits from the students and the teachers in the high school,” said Member Joe Markey. “We’ve all been concerned about social and emotional health at the high school, and to hear about contagious smiling and things like that is really reassuring.”

Member Meg Tyler added that she was pleased that students were respectful of teachers with issues where mask wearing made them more comfortable.

Member Amanda Fargiano commended the superintendent for implementing a successful policy that other districts are hoping to emulate with her guidance.

“You came forward with a cautious recommendation and implemented it in a way that was respectful to families and respectful to the benefits of individual choice,” she said.

“The students are very thankful to you, too,” added student council representative Jessica Ianelli.

“You might let one or two snow days slide this year,” she joked, which drew an outburst of laughter from committee members and administrators.

Nancy Cavanaugh said that she was concerned about the new Omicron variant that just surfaced in California.

She said she would rather see the new trial period moved a week further into December to allow for more coronavirus data to be received for the post-Thanksgiving period, which led to her abstention from the vote.

When students return from the December break, the mask mandate will go back into effect. The School Committee will review the policy again in January.
