nnual Town Meeting will have a very different look this month, as the Select Board voted to reschedule it to Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 9:30 a.m., outside Hopkinton High School. A tent will be set up in the bus loop directly in front of HHS to accommodate about 200 people (socially distanced), with additional residents able to watch but not be protected from the elements. “We cannot turn people away, we would just have to expand the space that we have,” town clerk Connor Degan told the board at its Aug. 18 meeting. Degan also noted that state guidelines allow for Town Meeting to have a gathering of more than 50 people (the state limit at the time of the Aug. 18 Select Board meeting) as long as social distancing is in effect. In the case of inclement weather, the meeting will be pushed back a day.

DESK DUTY

Hopkinton High School principal Evan Bishop tests out a QR code affixed to a desk in the cafeteria in preparation for school reopening on Sept. 16. Students will use their phone to scan the code and input their information so administrators can more easily do contact tracing if anyone should test positive for COVID-19.

So the calls for change he is hearing now in America — which has trickled down to small towns like Hopkinton, where residents have requested town officials establish new protocols to help avoid the possibility of racial bias — has a familiar ring to it. “Having grown up in Zimbabwe at a time when we were fighting for
