Schools play it safe with closures By Sandy Quadros Bowles Contributing Writer

he decision to close schools for two days recently after two high school students tested positive for COVID-19 allowed necessary time for contact tracing, superintendent Carol Cavanaugh told members of the Hopkinton School Committee at the Oct. 1 meeting. “There was the potential for many close contacts” to the affected students, she said. High school students attend seven classes and could have 28 close contacts in one classroom alone. Representatives from the Department of Public Health advised students of all ages with high school siblings not to attend school, which helped “trigger the decision” to close school, Cavanaugh said. “We decided to err on the side of caution,” she stated. Students could lose as many three days of in-person instruction during the 14 days of quarantine, and this

his summer’s national protests that demanded changes in policing included a call for more people trained to handle mental health issues, individuals who would be better prepared than police to deal with those suffering from psychological or substance-abuse issues. Hopkinton appears to be well ahead of the curve on this issue. For five years the Hopkinton Police Department has taken part in a jail diversion program, partnering with the Framingham-based nonprofit Advocates. Hopkinton is part of a regional program called ASHH that includes Ashland, Sherborn and Holliston. The communities
