Select Board wants PD input on MAPC pledge By Jerry Spar Managing Editor

uring the continuation of its debate about whether or not to adopt the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) pledge to address systemic racism, the Select Board on Dec. 1 agreed that members of the town’s public safety departments — most notably the Police Department — should first be invited to share their views. The MAPC pledge, among other things, calls on towns “to address racism within law enforcement in a proactive, intentional and consistent manner,” and commit to “an anti-violence approach to policing.” Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone and member Brian Herr said adopting the pledge as it stands would offend members of the Police Department and might lead to officers looking for employment elsewhere. “I have heard directly from members of our police force: ‘If you sign

fter navigating the return to school and the return to high school sports during the fall, Hopkinton High School athletic director Rich Cormier said the lessons learned from that season will inform the winter slate scheduled to begin Dec. 14. Hopkinton plans to offer an aggressive slate of sports, going beyond many other area schools in an effort to get more athletes competing even as the state fights through a second wave in the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the biggest differences between the Hillers and many of the other schools in the state is the plan to offer winter track.

Basketball is one of the sports approved for the upcoming winter season, although with social distancing rules things will look very different.
