Town tries to avoid another COVID surge By Jerry Spar Managing Editor

opkinton health director Shaun McAuliffe said Jan. 5 that the town had 60 active cases of COVID-19, although he expected to see a drop, optimistic that the post-holiday surge would start to wane. On the same day, the Hopkinton Public Library and The Spoon announced they were closing their doors temporarily. The library, which continues to serve residents on a remote/curbside basis, will be closed until at least Jan. 22. The Spoon’s announcement indicated the Lumber Street diner would be closed “through this winter season.” McAuliffe said there had been 299 cases in town since Sept. 21. “We’re experiencing a second surge of cases that’s related to the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, a little bit of vacation time,” he said during his COVID-19 update to the
