ealth Department director Shaun McAuliffe said the town has had a rough couple of weeks dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic but appears to be “trending back downward.” “We’re coming off what I hope to be one of the worst two weeks of the pandemic in Hopkinton,” he said at the Jan. 19 Select Board meeting, noting there have been 172 cases in the last month and last week the town’s positivity rate was a record-high 5.95 percent. All of the town’s schools were closed Jan. 15 for contact tracing, and the high school remained closed for the first three days of last week. “All of this is really attributed to the fact that we weren’t doing enough to reduce our exposure,” he added. “Through our trace-back activities we’ve traced this surge in cases back to family gatherings, some limited office-type parties, travel by air, car and train, and, to a lesser extent, a bit of work and some sporting activities.”

he Zoning Advisory Committee put the final touches on its proposed commercial ground-mounted solar bylaw at its Jan. 19 meeting, working with town counsel to tweak the wording before unanimously voting to send it to the Planning Board for eventual submission to Town Meeting. “I can’t believe we’ve finished,” ZAC chair Mary Larson-Marlowe said with a laugh after the motion passed. “I thought solar would go on forever.” Following input from Bryan Bertram, an attorney with Miyares & Harrington LLP, at the previous week’s meeting, the committee altered its approach to be less restrictive and more focused on screening and other measures that would better

This solar array at a Lumber Street residence has frequently been cited as part of the reason a stricter commercial solar bylaw was needed, as a portion of it (at the top in this photo) is clearly visible from abutting residences.
