Timlin race to be virtual again in ’21

rganizers of the Sharon Timlin Memorial Event, normally held outside Hopkinton High School, are planning for a virtual event again this June due to the ongoing pandemic.

While last year the event committee had to scramble to transition the event online, this year the decision was made much earlier.

“In talking with the committee, we decided that given with everything going on, and things are so much up in the air as far as when we can have large gatherings again and when something like a Timlin race can kick off and happen, we decided to start off going virtual,” event director Wayde Marshall said. “Based on conversations with some people in the town and the guidance from the state that’s coming out we just thought that made the most sense. H

opkinton High School junior Kevin Gu writes faithfully in his journal every day and spends hours of his free time creating poetry and short stories.

He obviously takes his writing seriously. So did the judges in the 2021 Scholastic Writing Awards, a statewide writing competition for students.

Gu earned 10 awards in the competition, including a prestigious nomination for the American Voices award. This nomination is given to the top five writing submissions in Massachusetts and makes him eligible for the American Voices Award, the top award a student can earn for writing in the program.

A

nyone who regularly watches the Hopkinton Planning Board meetings knows that board member Sundar Sivaraman plays a lot of tennis. It often comes up when the group plans a site walk for a Saturday morning, which is Sivaraman’s prime tennis time.

It would be reasonable to assume that Sivaraman is playing at an indoor facility, especially this month, with multiple storms leaving a blanket of snow over the region.

But we’re living in strange times, and these times call for some creative adjustments.

Not only does Sivaraman play outside — usually at the courts next to Ashland Middle School, but occasionally at the courts in front of Hopkinton High School — sometimes it requires shoveling (or snowblowing) the playing area. Oh, and he plays against the same opponent almost every time out — for almost 20 years — Ashland resident Rajesh Yadav.

Sivaraman’s games used to be limited to weekends, and only during spring, summer and fall. In the winter he and Yadav turned to other forms of exercise, such as running and However, the pandemic sparked a change in their INDEPENDENT badminton. schedule.

THOUGHTS “Until 2020 we would play without fail Saturday and Sunday, but starting after COVID hit and our workplaces closed JERRY SPAR we upped the tempo and started playing a lot more frequently,” Sivaraman explained. “We had time in the morning because I didn’t have to dress up and go to work. So where we were playing only on Saturday and Sunday, that changed, and we started playing probably four times a week.”

The weekday matches start around 6:45 a.m. and last about an hour. On the weekends they’ll play for two hours. And while the weather occasionally will keep them away — especially if the conditions are unsafe — most of the time they just put on an extra layer or two of clothes and get to work to make the court as playable as possible.

“The biggest challenge in the cold weather is you’ve got to get bundled up,” Sivaraman explained. “We have to wear long pants and a running jacket and some kind of gloves. It’s very cold that early in the morning, but we’ve played when the temperature was as cold as 10 degrees.”

The extreme weather also forces a change in how the game is played.

“The ball will not bounce as much when the ground is cold,” Sivaraman said. “You’ve got to move a lot more toward the ball in winter. That’s the biggest challenge. Otherwise, tennis is just like running. There’s enough running around so that the cold doesn’t bother us.”

The men, both in their early 50s, met about 20 years ago when they were part of a bigger group of recreational tennis players. Over the next few years other players left due to injury or relocation, and it was down to two. And that was fine with them.

“Both of us have been playing recreationally, both of us are about the same age, so it’s more fun,” Sivaraman said.

And who usually wins?

“It’s a mixed bag,” Sivaraman said with a laugh. “The game is so equal these days. It’s always a split. I have good days and not-so-good days. Both of our games have improved a lot. But on the other hand, because we’re only playing each other, we’re not going beyond that [for a comparison]. Nobody else is coming to challenge us.”

Occasionally another friend or two will join them, and they will expand to doubles. But most of the time it’s just the two old friends. And Sivaraman hopes it will stay that way for a long time.

“If we end up retiring, this is how it’s going to be,” he said. “At the very least, we’ll get a couple of hours of tennis.”

HHS student contributes to Baypath Due to the pandemic, volunteer opportunities have been limited at Baypath Humane Society, the animal shelter in Hopkinton. However, Hopkinton High School student Tyler Delorey found a way to contribute.

Delorey, whose family adopted a cat from Baypath, used his graphic design skills to help create visuals for the organization, designing social media graphics and video to get attention for a dog in need (the dog since has been adopted).

Planning Board seeks details about Cornell’s proposed outdoor expansion

T

he plan for a permanent outdoor expansion at Cornell’s Irish Pub will require more details before the Planning Board votes whether or not to sign off on it, board members decided at their Feb. 8 meeting.

The expansion already was approved by the Select Board on Jan. 26.

However, principal planner John Gelcich said, the establishment’s owners, despite being repeatedly informed that they also needed to submit documents and receive approval from the Planning Board, did not provide enough detail to the board. Additionally, no representative from Cornell’s appeared at the Feb. 8 meeting.

Some board members initially expressed a desire to approve the plan, but vice chair Rob Benson pushed to have the Design Review Board take a

The concerns the Planning Board has deal with noise management, the location of proposed bollards in the parking spaces, fencing around the seating area, drainage in the parking lot, changes to parking spots and lighting.

After a unanimous vote to have the Design Review Board look over the plans at an upcoming meeting, the hearing was continued to March 1.

The Design Review Board discussed the proposal at its Feb. 16 meeting and unanimously voted to recommend approval after hearing from Cornell’s co-owner Ellen Scanlon.

Scanlon explained that the plan is to remove the temporary barriers and replace them with 6-foot high permanent white PVC fencing, similar to the fencing already in place at a section that already is approved for permanent outdoor dining. There will be three fire exit doors with alarms, she said, and string lighting installed on the inside of the new fence, facing inward.

Due to a reorganization of the parking area that included line striping, Scanlon said no spaces will be lost with the expansion. She also noted that concrete bollards will be installed in front of every parking spot around the new fencing as a safety precaution.

Scanlon said the expansion is especially important because she isn’t sure how long it will take for the masses to return to public dining.

“Even hopefully if this virus goes away soon and people get someway back to normal, it’s going to be a long time before people feel really comfortable indoors, in confined spaces,” she said. “It’s lovely to give somebody [a choice]: Would you like indoors our outdoors? It’s up to them, then. If they want to sit in the hot sun, good luck to them.”

Board settles on plantings, bond for Whisper Way In other Planning Board news, the board closed out some items related to the Whisper Way development off Wood Street. Following a site walk that included members of the Planning Board, representatives of town engineering consultant BETA and the developer, an agreement was reached for additional trees to be planted. The developer, Chris Nation, previously stated that there was not enough room to plant as many trees as initially planned.

“We had a good meeting [at the site walk], discussed lots of things, and came up with what I’ll call a compromise to add five street trees,” board member Dave Paul said.

The board then unanimously voted to adjust the performance guarantee estimate for the development to $98,235, and, pending receipt of the bond, released three house lots in the development so that the homes can be sold. …

Board members also voted to approve changes to the Planning Board’s submission requirements and procedures. Among the adjustments are a rule that directs applicants to coordinate with town professional staff before bringing an item before the board. Changes also are related to applications dealing with open space mixed-use development (OSMUD), neighborhood mixed use (NMU), site plan review, storm water, earth removal, garden apartments, village housing and flexible community development.

The changes do not have to go before Town Meeting.

Marshall did not completely rule out trying to hold something live in the unlikely event circumstances should dramatically improve, indicating it’s “a fluid situation,” but he said it would be challenging to organize an online and in-person event at the same time.

“I think at this point we have to make a decision which is the best path to go down, so we chose the virtual path. But who knows?” he said. “However, if you go down two paths it becomes a bit challenging to do twice the work.”

The event annually draws thousands of people for the 5K road race, color run and family fun day activities. It’s a fundraiser for the Angel Fund, which supports research toward a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease that’s more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. More than $2 million has been raised for the Angel Fund and ALS research since the

race started in 2004, including $125,000 last year, Marshall said.

The event traditionally is held on the third Saturday in June. And while organizers prefer to see people run or walk their 5K on that day, this year participants will have a two-week span.

“We really want people to try to run it on June 19, because that day has become sort of special, the third Saturday in June,” Marshall said. “But we understand life gets in the way, so we’re giving them a two-week window leading up to the 19th.”

The entry fee is $30 per person, with a family/team of up to five discounted to $99. Registration was due to go live this week at sharontimlinrace.org.

Last year’s event drew 893 entrants, and with more advance notice organizers are hoping for a bigger turnout. They also are looking for local businesses and individuals to help with donations, sponsorships and silent auction items.

mentions for his work.

His American Voices nomination was in the flash fiction category, which he describes as a mix of short story and poetry and something of an “experimental” style.

He began writing that piece in the summer of 2019. His other awards were in the categories of critical essay, poetry and short story.

“I am incredibly proud of the awards I earned,” he said, “but even more so about the personal growth that resulted from continuous writing for years on end.

I’m incredibly grateful to all those who have supported and contributed to my journey as a writer.”

His love for writing began in childhood, when he began jotting thoughts of the day as early as second grade.

In middle school, he joined the fan fiction club.

But he didn’t think of sharing his writing much beyond himself, he said, until he reached high school and heard about the scholastic awards.

He submitted a short story in ninth grade and received an honorable mention — and an insight.

“Wait a second,” he realized. “I can win stuff with my writing.”

“After that, I wrote a lot,” he said. “I wanted to win again.”

In the summer of ninth grade, he was one of only 20 students in Greater Boston selected to attend the teen writing class at GrubStreet, a nonprofit creative writing center in Boston.

“That’s where my love for poetry” was inspired, he said, adding to his experience with prose and short stories.

He continued to earn more awards each year, culminating with this year’s significant haul. He also serves as the editor in chief of the Hopkinton High School online newspaper.

His wasn’t the only impressive performance by a local student in the competition. Brian Gu (no relation) won a best in category award for short story in Massachusetts. Best in category is for a submission that judges believe exceed even the expectation of a gold key award.

Student Mia Carboni won three awards and also took honors in last year’s

competition.

HHS English teacher Sarah Ellam said she hopes the recognition encourages other students to participate.

“I was so happy to see the awards,” she said. She also is grateful to the Hopkinton Parent Teacher Association, which covered the competition entry fees.

Writing can take time out of class to work on and polish, but it can also be “accessible,” Kevin Gu said. He has submitted essays he wrote in his AP classes.

Similarly, Ellam said, nearly every year students win for their college essays, so she encouraged students to consider all their writing when applying. “People just underestimate their talent,” she said.

She hopes that the extra time at home during the pandemic provided added opportunities for creativity. “The demands of school weren’t as high last spring,” as remote learning was in its infancy.

“Maybe some of the students took time to work on their passions.”

Judges are looking for work that reflects the students’ voices, something she emphasizes as well. “I encourage them to put more of themselves into their writing,” she said.

“We hope that students feel it’s a way to express themselves and hopefully discover more about themselves,” she added.

By doing this, they create stronger work, she said. But they also learn something valuable, something she said she hopes they take with them well beyond the classroom: “Their voice does matter.”

their 5K. Last year’s event featured an online performance of the national anthem as part of the kickoff and a virtual toast from former Red Sox pitcher Mike Timlin. The race is named for Sharon Timlin, Mike’s mother, who succumbed to ALS in 2002.

“It is Father’s Day weekend that weekend, so we’re hoping a lot of families will run with dad and share some of the photos with us,” Marshall said.

“Also, if you’ve got a story that you’d like to share with how you were affected

by ALS, whether it’s you or a family member, we’d love to hear that too. We’ll share your stories in the lead-up to the race. During family fun day we have one piece of the field that’s called “The Faces

of ALS” — people who have been really affected by this disease. We’ll be looking to take that virtual this year. So if you’ve got anyone that you know that’s been affected and would like to share your story with us and our community, we’d love to hear it.”

One advantage to having the race be virtual is that it allows for more widespread participation, especially for people who don’t live locally.

“The other thing that’s fun about this is you can get family and friends from other states to do it, because it is a virtual race,” Marshall said. “That’s the beauty of a virtual race, is that you can run it anywhere in the country or even in the world if you’ve got a lot of family and friends who want to do something like this.”

Concerns raised about Town Meeting due to pandemic C

oncerns about the logistics surrounding Annual Town Meeting due to the pandemic were raised at the Feb. 9 Select Board meeting.

Town Meeting moderator Tom Garabedian NEWS appeared before the board BRIEFS and asked if there were plans for an alternate date and/or site for the meeting, considering the state remains under the governor’s emergency order.

Last year’s Annual Town Meeting (ATM) was postponed a couple of times before being held outside in midSeptember with only a small number of articles addressed.

This year’s ATM is slated for May 3, with the Town Election to follow exactly two weeks later.

“It would seem to me that if we intend to do something outdoors that the beginning of May is probably not the right time, and that we might want to consider a delay until June when we can be assured of better weather,” Garabedian said. “Or alternatively consider the use of the high school gymnasium as a site which could be managed if it is available potentially at the beginning of May when we routinely conduct our meeting.”

A few options were discussed, including using multiple locations at the middle school and high school with video feeds.

Town manager Norman Khumalo recommended the town activate the subgroup — made up of town officials and emergency personnel — that planned last year’s ATM and have the group report back with its suggestions on both Town Meeting and Town Election.

Budget discussions continue The Select Board continued its Fiscal Year 2022 budget discussions Feb. 9 with town department heads.

Hopkinton Youth and Family Services director Dawn Alcott-Miler, whose department includes a full-time director (Alcott-Miller) and a threequarter-time social worker (Colleen Souza), requested to expand the staff.

“This year we’re requesting an additional full-time clinic staff person to serve in a flexible role as a program coordinator who’s also looking at things with a clinician’s eye to meet Hopkinton’s growing clinical needs, demands for our services and desire for quality educational programming,” she said.

Board member Brian Herr said he wanted to support the department “any way I can.”

“I can’t think of a more important thing during the times of the pandemic than trying — and I emphasize the word trying — to maintain our mental health through this whole process,” he said, adding: “Every day I hear horror stories now — in our town, in our surrounding towns, across the state, wherever — about people from all walks of life really kind of losing it during this pandemic. Some of them are pretty sad. So I want to help any way I can, and if it’s supporting this, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Amy Beck, the director of senior services, said her department remains busy during the pandemic providing services and activities, and her focus now is on helping seniors sign up for the vaccine clinics that are targeted to

start soon in town.

Jay Guelfi, director of Hopkinton Parks & Recreation, said his department is looking forward to bringing back a number of programs as the pandemic ends. Among them are the public skating rink and concerts and movies on the Town Common.

He noted that the public dog park off Fruit Street should be completed this spring, using a private grant and community preservation funds, and the plan is to construct a new public skate park at EMC Park next year.

Health director Shaun McAuliffe said, “It goes without saying that this has been a challenging year.” His department already has been approved to hire one additional staff member.

Town clerk Connor Degan, presenting on both the town clerk and election and registration budgets, said that the election budget tends to be a roller coaster, as the number of elections changes from year to year.

“We’re going to need in the near future additional personnel in our office,” he said, noting that there was a “massive workload increase in our office” due in part to the lack of normal volunteers, mainly seniors.

Issues raised with Center School To w n e n gineer/facilities director Dave Daltorio made an appearance before the Select Board Feb. 9 to update the board about issues at Center School.

The building no longer serves as a school but is used to store Town Hall documents, while the gym and a couple of classrooms are used for Parks & Recreation programs.

Daltorio said his department has spent a lot of time and money trying to keep the building operational. The biggest issue is the heating system, and he said there have been major problems for some time now.

“We’ve been fighting it for a couple of years,” he said, adding: “We may actually have to ask the board if it would be OK to winterize that building, shut off the heat,” which would mean no use of the building, at least during the cold months.

Daltorio said numerous repairs have been made, but whenever one problem is fixed a new one crops up.

“We don’t have any more fingers to stick in the dike,” he said.

Khumalo said the Permanent Building Committee is prepared to present the Select Board with suggestions regarding the building’s future, which the committee hopes to do within the next month.

Misc.: Board pays tribute to Brault Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone called attention to the passing of longtime resident Richard Brault, a wellknown U.S. Marine veteran who died Feb. 6 at the age of 95.

Tedstone called Brault “a very influential and wonderful guy, someone that embraced Hopkinton forever and ever and ever.”

Added Herr: “Not only was he a former Marine, but he was the best Santa Claus that Hopkinton’s ever had at Weston Nurseries for years and years, with his beard. My kids just loved him. He was the best.” …

The board accepted the resignations of John Palmer from the Tax Relief Committee, Megan Carvalho from the Council on Aging and Alton Chen from the Capital Improvement Committee.

Palmer, a longtime resident, recently moved to Ashland, and Tedstone lamented his departure.

“He is an absolutely tremendous asset to the town,” Tedstone said. “The work that he does behind the scenes is absolutely a throwback. He and his wife, who worked for the police forever, have been just a wonderful asset for our town. We don’t get people like John Palmer to work through the Town Hall very often. … As someone that’s been in town for a long, long, long time, I can’t thank Mr. Palmer enough for all the work that he’s done and set the bar as high as he has for other people coming in. So thank you very much Mr. Palmer.”

Added board member Mary Jo LaFreniere, who served on boards with Palmer: “I’m just very proud of knowing John. He is an amazing person. … [He and his wife] have been wonderful citizens of Hopkinton for a very, very long time.” …

Stephanie Clifton was approved as assistant town accountant, filling a position that came open due to a retirement.

Clifton has been working for the town since 2016, first parttime, then full-time the following year as an administrative assistant in treasury, payroll and assessing.

ConCom has concerns about proposed subdivision off Blueberry Lane The proposed Elmwood Farms III subdivision originally came before the town in the late 1980s and now is being revived.

epresentatives for the developer of the proposed Elmwood Farms III residential subdivision off Blueberry Lane appeared before the Conservation Commission at its meeting Feb. 9, looking to move forward a project that was first introduced more than three decades earlier, but they found it difficult to agree on a key point.

The proposed 24-lot development is on the south side of Blueberry Lane, abutting Marathon School and EMC Park. Abbott Realty Trust is the developer.

The discussion focused on water drainage concerns, and there was some disagreement regarding the standards the project should be using. Specifically, GLM Engineering, representing the developer, used old data regarding average rainfall depth when creating a model to reflect proposed runoff volumes and peak discharge analysis. BETA Group, the town’s engineering consultant, commented that the plan should be updated to the current standard as per the town’s bylaw, which reflects a higher volume of rainwater.

Conservation administrator Don MacAdam noted that the project was approved by the Planning Board in 1989, but it had not come before the Conservation Commission until recently.

Said Conservation Commission chair Jeff Barnes: “I understand it’s been under litigation for whatever reason. To Don’s point, this is coming before the

commission now [for the first time].

Engineering this to standards that are 30 years old or 20 years old, it’s not going to work for us.”

Rob Truax from GLM Engineering defended the proposal, stating: “We’re not engineering it to the standards that are 30 years old. We’ve gone through the stormwater regulations. We’re not doing it to your stormwater bylaw.”

Countered Barnes: “Well, that needs to be done.”

Truax suggested getting counsel to weigh in, saying: “My understanding of the bylaw, though, is it states that if the subdivision was approved by the Planning Board — it doesn’t state dates, it just says if it was — then this doesn’t fall under that.”

Board member Melissa Recos, who specializes in stormwater engineering in her job with BETA, also questioned the approach to base an analysis on data that was updated years ago.

“Currently we require all of our developments to follow the new rainfall data and such,” she said. “I think there was a condition in the order of conditions where they’re valid for two years before you start construction. I think the intent of that is for projects like this, where things change over time. I would expect any development in town to go by the new standards. Rainfall changes, development changes, a lot of things change.”

Meanwhile, a group of Blueberry Lane residents (Elmwood Farms I and II subdivisions) sent a letter to the commission last August expressing concern about the effects of the development on their properties, many of which have dealt with longstanding drainage issues due to, the letter states, “the flow of water towards our street, poor soil quality, and the deficient original grading of existing lots.”

“The residents around this subdivi-

sion have had issues with stormwater problems,” Barnes said. “There’s a high groundwater table at the site. So the conditions there currently aren’t ideal to begin with. And to design this to some standard that is out of date to me just doesn’t seem reasonable.”

Concluded Barnes: “You guys can engineer it to the standards that you want, and then we’ll review it and we’ll see where it goes, I guess.”

Looking at the overall project, Truax noted the plans have been updated since the last presentation.

“We feel it’s a good plan now,” Truax said. “It’s better than what was approved. We’re doing water quality treatment, we’re getting all the treatment we need, we’re going to improve the existing drainage basins. … We think these are good improvements. We think it’s definitely a much better plan than we started with.”

The new plan also eliminates one of the three proposed roads (Adams Street) and some house lots, although it was not clear precisely how many homes were removed. The new plan appeared to show 17 proposed homes, although some additional lots were visible without a designation. Truax said he would submit a revised plan with more detail after consulting with the developer.

The discussion was to be continued March 9.

he pandemic-shorted winter season at Hopkinton High School came to a close last week, and the Hillers teams finished on some very high notes.

The girls basketball team ended with a 51-23 SPORTS rout of host Ashland on Feb. ROUNDUP 16. Lauren Cho scored 14 points, Kiki Fossbender added 10 and Caroline Connell netted nine for Hopkinton, which closed the season at 7-5.

After taking a 13-7 lead through one quarter, the Hillers dominated the second period. Cho scored seven points in a 13-1 run, and Hopkinton took a 28-10 lead into halftime. Connell sparked a 9-0 run to open the third quarter as the Hillers opened up an insurmountable lead. It was 39-12 heading into the final period.

Fossbender (a team-high 14.5 points per game) and Cho (12 ppg), both juniors, were named Tri-Valley League All-Stars for the second straight time, and senior guard Lulu Murphy earned her first All-Star recognition.

“All in all it was a difficult year from the perspective of COVID protocols and scheduling,” coach Mike Greco said. “But this was such a great group to work with this year, I know the coaching staff and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was just a pleasure to be in the gym with his group every day.

They are a close group on and off the court and a lot of fun to be around.

“I think we are all just thankful for the opportunity to play together this season and we want to extend our appreciation to everyone who played a role along the way to make this season happen.”

Greco is looking forward to seeing what a strong junior class can accomplish next year, although he is grateful for the efforts of the departing players: Murphy, Connell, Millie Senseney,

Kylie Hardenbrook and Maggie Hedstrom.

“Lulu, Caroline and Millie filled the role of captain this year and provided excellent leadership,” Greco said. “Many of these seniors have been with me for three and four years now and I will certainly miss them next season.”

Keefe fuels boys basketball The HHS boys basketball team capped its season with a win over Ashland on Feb. 16 as Brian Keefe scored 20 points in an exciting 60-56 home victory.

Josh Czerepuszko added 17 points for the Hillers, who finished with a 3-6 record.

Sports HHS ski teams enjoy time on slopes

ike every other sport during the COVID-19 pandemic, skiing looked a little different this year. The Hopkinton High School boys and girls teams needed to make sure they stayed spaced out and kept their numbers down on the hill, but what they love the most about their sport is the chance to compete, and

that was not taken away.

“They adjusted really well,” said coach Nancy Schlussel. “Skiing is a fun sport, we have always been the fun team because we get to go outside in the winter and slide as fast as we can down Ward Hill.”

The Hillers did not let masks or distancing stand in the way of enjoying their season.

happy to be out there,” Schlussel said.

“After a full week of online classes or their hybrid format they looked forward to some fresh air, and I was happy to provide that for them.”

Hopkinton was able to schedule more practices and meets than Schlussel might have thought possible at the start of the season. Part of the reason for the successful season is the advanced preparation. Conversations between Schlussel, athletic director Rich Cormier, the league and the ski facility — Ski Ward in Shrewsbury — began in October.

“We had many meetings to talk about how we could pull this off safely, knowing what our normal numbers are,” Schlussel said.

Practices were cut from two hours to 90 minutes to allow for the fact that only one team was able to train at a time. During meets, instead of having skiers from different schools alternate, all of the Hopkinton athletes skied together and then their times were compared to those of their opponents.

The modifications did not slow down the Hillers at all, as both teams finished second in the Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League to Algonquin.

For the girls, senior captain Cate Barry led the way, earning multiple first-place finishes. Freshman Klara Niss, a longtime racer who has been competing since elementary school, and Libby Herlihy, a sophomore, were fixtures in the top 10 at meets, padding the girls team’s point total.

Sophomore Ally Barry is a recreational skier, but Schlussel said she “found her race legs this year and showed us some great skills out there on the hill.”

The girls also had a trio of talented juniors — Gabi Ciri, Tori Fischer and Avery Hutchinson — who developed a friendly competition with one another

that had each of them pushing hard for faster times.

“They were all putting it down each week and ripping up the hill,” Schlussel said.

Freshmen Sidhi Dhanda and Jordis Vogel quickly learned the ins and outs of competitive skiing after coming from a recreational background.

“They worked hard in practice, they asked questions and they tried new things,” Schlussel said. “They have a good future ahead of them.”

On the boys side, senior captain Jackson Schlussel won every single race this season and embraced his role as a leader, freely sharing his knowledge and experience with his teammates.

Sophomore Mathias Niss is an experienced racer who was consistently in the top 20. Jake Lacoche joined the program after racing at Waterville Valley and earned a few top-10 finishes.

Senior Cameron Hanna is another regular in the top 10.

“He is a fun one to watch,” Schlussel said of Hanna. “His second run is always faster than his first. It’s exciting to watch him come down for his second run.”

Junior Samuel LaGoy was a new addition who Schlussel said quickly “caught the ski bug.” The rest of the roster was made up of seniors who were happy to be competing in a year unlike any other: Nathan Foster, Andrew Herlihy, Benjamin Kisija, Nick Leccese and Connor Murphy.

“They have been with us for three or four years now, and seeing them come from a recreational background to competitive racing has been fun to watch,” Schlussel said. “They didn’t have a state tournament to go for, but they knew this was their last year so they were going to put it down. They were so focused and training hard and making the most of it.”

lead was nine with 1:36 left in the game before Ashland made a final run. The Clockers outscored the hosts 8-2 to close within three points at 59-56 with 11 seconds remaining. An offensive foul on the ensuing inbounds play gave the ball back to the visitors, but Ashland’s Jake Rymsza, who scored a game-high 22 points, could not shake Keefe’s defense and was off the mark on his bid to tie the game with 3-pointer. Keefe then hit a free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining to ice the game.

“This was a challenging basketball season as we had many practices and games canceled and postponed due to COVID-19,” coach Tom Keane said.

“Through it all, our players handled it like champions. The seniors, Brian Keefe, Matt Cooper, Josh Czerepuszko, Anthony DiPietro and Ross Comcowich, led a tight-knit group both on and off the court. We all learned the importance and benefits of resiliency. I am very proud of our team.”

Keefe and junior guard Nate Kasper were named TVL All-Stars.

Schlussel, Barry lead ski teams The Hopkinton High School ski teams closed out their seasons on Feb. 11 with their final Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League race at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury.

On the boys side, Jackson Schlussel once again captured first place, finishing with a combined time of 45.39 seconds for his two runs. Jake Lacoche finished fourth (48.56), Cameron Hanna took 12th (49.73), Mathias Niss grabbed 18th (51.64) and Sam LaGoy was 25th (53.24). As a team, the boys finished third with 945 points, trailing Algonquin (968) and Medway (958).

Cate Barry took third in 49.12 to lead the girls’ effort. Klara Niss was sixth (50.18), Elizabeth Herlihy finished 12th (51.64), Ally Barry took 15th (53.24) and Tori Fischer was 18th (53.74). The girls were second in the team competition, with 951 points to Algonquin’s 980.

Boys hockey finishes strong The HHS boys hockey team put together another impressive campaign, and a strong underclass group is giving the program reason to be excited about

the future.

Hopkinton rolled past host Ashland, 6-2, on Feb. 17.

Sophomores Joe Carrazza and Pavit Mehra recorded two goals and an assist apiece to lead the way. Another sophomore, Vasilii Zolotarev, scored a nifty backhand goal. Senior Caleb Dacey had the Hillers’ final tally, stealing the puck deep in the Ashland zone and poking it past the goalie with one hand for his first career goal, setting off a celebration on the HHS bench. Sophomore Jack Lang made 21 saves in net.

The following day, Hopkinton fell to Medfield, 7-4, despite two goals and an assist from senior Aidan Walsh and a goal and two assists from senior Geoff Tocco. Mehra had the other goal for the Hillers, who ended the season with a record of 7-3.

Girls hockey gets late tie The Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn girls hockey co-op team ended the season’s final weekend in exciting fashion, recording a dramatic 1-1 tie with Westwood on Feb. 14 on a goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Sophia Mazzuchelli scored the tying goal for Hopkinton/D-S. Senior Kristin McCluskey shined in goal, making 55 saves.

The following day the girls dropped a 3-0 decision to Medway/Holliston, ending their season with a record of 1-7-2.

Schools Inventathon demonstrates students’ creativity

L

ife in the time of COVID-19 has presented extraordinary challenges.

The creative minds of students who participated in the Hopkinvents Inventathon developed potential solutions to some of these issues during a 24-hour event that showcased problem-solving through invention.

A bracelet that responds to rising body temperatures — a potential sign of the virus. A divider that allows people to sit in separate rows of the same vehicle yet maintain safe social distance. A face shield that also can gauge a temperature and connect with contact tracing networks.

These were just some of the winning entries in the event, which was held virtually over a 24-hour period Jan. 15-16. The event was organized by Hopkinton High School students within the Business/Technology/Engineering Department.

Students wanted to run a virtual event to create and showcase inventions, said Doug Scott, Business/Technology/ Engineering Department leader for Hopkinton schools, Grades 6-12. He supervised the Inventathon and oversaw the process as students developed the event.

on solving problems related to COVID and school.

Scott hoped student participants would learn “how to properly identify a viable problem.” The next step, he said was to have students “utilize their youthful energy” to develop “unique solutions to real problems and realize that they can make a difference through

the skills that they possess.”

Mentors and students taught each other, said Aryan Jinal Shah, who served as a mentor. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, everyone has something to teach someone,” Shah said. As mentors, “we shared our knowledge” but “we also learned a lot through the experience ourselves, even from the younger students.”

Shah credited “teamwork” with helping the event run smoothly. “Everyone is good at something different, and we worked together to make sure the students learned as much as possible while having fun,” he said.

Disha Mudenur, a freshman at HHS who served as a mentor, said she “walked away feeling amazing. Everyone who participated clearly enjoyed it, and those who organized it did too.”

Michael Youssef, an HHS senior, said that despite the challenges of developing such an event virtually rather than in person, students rose to the occasion.

“Both our high school and middle school participants were eager to put forth their creativity and diverse knowledge of art and engineering to solving problems,” he said. “Their passion and energy were clearly evident in the projects that they submitted.”

The results showed him the “insane amount of potential that many students in Hopkinton have in the field of engineering.”

Imaan Haider, an HHS senior and a mentor, enjoyed “seeing the participants learning and having fun while taking part in this event. I had fun planning and prepping for this, and I hope that I could help or participate in an event similar to this in the future.”

Invention education is crucial to growing the American economy, said Leigh Estabrooks, invention education officer with the Lemelson-MIT program, which advocates for invention education and helped to support the Inventathon.

Inventing “solutions to real-world problems” has never been more important, she said. The program advocates “all hands on deck” when it comes to invention education. “Girls invent, youth of color invent, rural youth invent, urban youth invent,” she said. “All

youths must see themselves as inventors of our future’s health and well-being.”

The winners of the middle school competition were Dustin Ehwa and Rishith Ravi, both of Billerica. Taking second was Hopkinton’s Jacob Dold, and third place went to the Hopkinton duo of Chris Burton and Dylan Striek.

In the high school division, the team of Hopkinton’s Shishir Sudhaman and Billerica’s Christian So took first place.

Eleanor Nealon and Ceara Perry, both from Hopkinton, took second. The Hopkinton duo of Sidhi Dhanda and Emily Kimball were third.

HHS robotics team wins community award Hopkinton High School Robotics Team 2602G was named a winner of the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation online challenge in the community award category for its work uniting the community through STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The team, consisting of Chloe Barnes, Imaan Haider, Shanzay Khan, Rithika Kilari, Disha Mudenur, Emma Steir, Srilakshmi Venkatesan and Amanda Xie, created tournaments, launched a website and tutored students about STEM. The team “organized many community service outreach programs over the last year which focused on presenting STEM education opportunities for younger students in Hopkinton and beyond,” said Doug Scott, the Business/Technology/ Engineering subject matter leader for Grades 6-12. “The VEX Robotics Competition requested submissions for a Google Community Award which would honor teams that had conducted community service above and beyond during the past year. The HHS team documented their work through a short video which they submitted for review. They were chosen as a first-place award from submissions from many entrants from countries participating in VEX Robotics.”

Garden Club offers scholarship The Hopkinton Garden Club is soliciting applications for its 2021 scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is available to applicants maintaining legal residence in Hopkinton for at least one year. Scholarships are available for high school or college students and/or any adult interested in pursuing a career in the fields of horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, forestry, conservation, environmental sciences and related fields.

Hopkinton’s dog whisperer, Carroll earns trust for pet care Barbara Carroll is known around town as the dog whisperer.

Her passion is helping pets and their owners to be happy and successful.

xperience matters when it comes to the care of pets, and Barbara Carroll of Dog Hikes & Cat Care is an expert.

Having grown up around animals of all kinds, Carroll has an innate ability to connect with them and understands their nature.

“I pride myself in developing a great rapport with each pet and its owner,” Carroll stated. “I believe in positive reinforcement and consistency and expect pet owners to follow through on both.”

Carroll finds that most families underestimate the amount of exercise their dog needs to stay healthy and well balanced. Corgis and border collies may be favorite breeds for some, but these animals are naturally herders. According to Carroll, that translates into at least two stimulating exercise workouts a day of two hours each, either walking, hiking or swimming.

When Carroll picks up a dog, she promises a full 90-minute hike, typically in Hopkinton State Park, where she and the dog cover all types of terrain. She sends along pictures and videos while a pet is under her care. This swift-moving exercise regime occurs during most weather, including Nor’easters, but not in thunder and lightning storms. Carroll figures she averages about 185 miles of hiking a month.

As important as exercise is for an

animal, hygiene is equally vital. Carroll recommends owners clean and refresh water and food bowls regularly throughout the day. When a cat uses its litter box, bacteria can get on its whiskers and transfer to an eating surface. Litter boxes should be cleaned regularly, too.

Carroll values owners who schedule regular checkups for their pets. It’s not easy to know if an animal needs medical attention, especially an older pet. She recommends a veterinarian visit twice a year to ensure a pet’s optimum health.

Dr. Betina Shakespeare hired Carroll to work with her 2-year-old golden retriever, Tuckerman. Despite his lovable disposition as a puppy, Tuckerman displayed signs of food aggression that further developed into resource guarding around other dogs. Early on, the family “invested time and money in training methods only to find transient improvement in his behavior which would quickly revert back.” Then

Obituaries Charles DeWaele Charles F. DeWaele, 92, died Feb. 8.

He was the husband of Carol A (Buthray) DeWaele, to whom he was married for 66 years. Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Callanan) DeWaele.

He was a graduate of North High School in Worcester and Gettysburg College. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and worked for over 40 years for Travelers Insurance.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Matt of Hopkinton and Mark and wife Heidi (Canaan) of Connecticut.

Funeral services were to be held at the family’s convenience. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Edward Reardon Edward D. Reardon Jr. died Feb. 5 with his wife and daughter by his side at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston at the age of 72.

Edward is survived by his wife, Cynthia J. (Hollis) Reardon of Plymouth, their daughter, Laura Moynihan and husband Patrick of Franklin, his grandson, Declan Moynihan, and his twin granddaughters, Payton Moynihan and Taegan Moynihan. Edward also leaves his mother-in-law, Marilyn (Uloth) Hollis of Scituate, sister Suzanne Brackett of Hopkinton, brother Gary Reardon of Wellesley, sister Leslie Rice and husband Gregory of Medway, brother Douglas Reardon and wife Julie of Franklin, and sister-in-law Linda Ronan and husband Skip of Scituate.

He also leaves five nephews and five nieces as well as dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward D. Reardon Sr. and Margaret (Smith) Reardon, father-in-law Wilson T. Hollis Jr., brother-in-law Bryce Brackett and niece Jennifer Durant.

Ted was born March 27, 1948 in Boston, and grew up in Natick. He graduated from Marian High School in 1966 and attended Quinsigamond College until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968. He proudly served his country for six years aboard the USS John S. McCain DD36 and USS J. A. Furer DEG6.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Ted embarked on a 20-year career in sales management for Kidde Fenwal in Ashland. In 1994 he went into business for himself and owned Tiverton Auto Body Wholesale and Supply. In 1999 he joined Carney Management, where he worked with good friends until his retirement in 2014.

He was a dedicated and devoted father and husband whose love was evident in quality time spent together, lessons taught, memories made and stories told. He was most proud of his beautiful grandchildren and spent countless hours building Legos, reading stories and making their lunches all while they were tucked up beside him.

Aside from his family, Ted’s passion was sailing. What began in the U.S. Navy as service to his country became

an enduring love of the ocean. He and “Cyn” owned multiple sailboats, his favorite being Governor’s Pub, which he sailed with family and friends every chance he got. His dream to make a transatlantic voyage came true in June 2000 when he joined lifelong friends on a 17-day journey from Jamestown, Rhode Island, to Kinsale, Ireland. He is pictured here sailing into Kinsale harbor on June 30, 2000. This is how we will remember him.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 11 in St. Cecilia’s Church, Ashland, followed by a private burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Services were under the care of the Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland.

Janice Dayton Janice Ellen Donahue Dayton passed on Jan. 13 after suffering the debilitating and degenerative effects of Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

She was born in Framingham on May 8, 1942, to Norman and Hilma (Ruggles) Donahue, the first of five children. The family moved to Hopkinton when Janice was young and she graduated from Hopkinton High School. She enjoyed horseback riding.

Her first job was scooping ice cream at the local creamery. She spent much of her free time in the summers at Lake Whitehall with friends.

Janice had an eternal optimism about the world and life. She loved music and would hum the tune if she didn’t know the words.

She had many varied interests/hobbies including craft making, gardening, ceramics, bowling and baking for her family (she was known for her whoopie pies). It would surprise no one to learn she had just reupholstered a love seat or stenciled the living room walls. And after all the animals that came and went in her home (brought by her sons) that she would be frightened by or called to care for, she could’ve received an honorary veterinary degree.

She enjoyed rooting for her New England Patriots and usually had the team flag flying on game days.

She loved the ocean and lived near or vacationed there as often as possible.

She enjoyed being a homemaker as well as having a career outside the home at times in her life. But she most enjoyed spending time with her family: sons, grandchildren, siblings and nieces/ nephews.

The family thanks Bayada Hospice and the entire staffs of Birchwood Terrace and Ethan Allen Residences for their care.

A memorial service will be held at some future time due to COVID-19.

Kevin Mahoney Kevin P. Mahoney, 65, of Riverside, Rhode Island, passed away unexpectedly at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence on Jan. 25. He is preceded in death by his wife, Muriel (Lepine) Mahoney. He leaves behind his sister, Doreen Garner of Upton, his brother, Thomas Mahoney III of Martha’s Vineyard, his two nieces, Stefanie Garner and Maura Garner, both of Upton, and many cousins and friends.

Kevin was born in Cambridge to Thomas F. II and Helen T. (Zaveckas) Mahoney. He attended Rindge Technical High School until moving to Hopkinton and finishing high school at Joseph P. Keefe Technical High School in Framingham. Kevin worked in residential construction. He was an outdoorsman and an avid salt water fisherman. He lived on Prudence Island, Rhode Island, for a while, married Muriel and moved to Riverside, Rhode Island. In his later years, his favorite saying was that he was living at being happily retired.

There will not be a service due to COVID, but a memorial is being planned for the spring. Condolences can be left at MemorialFuneralHome.com.

Marie Creedon Marie T. Creedon (Kelley), 95, of Milford died comfortably and peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Feb. 7.

She was the devoted wife of 34 years to the late Richard J.

Creedon.

Born Dec. 7, 1925, in Natick, the daughter of the late Leon E. and Agnes C.(McCarthy) Kelley, Marie was raised and educated in Hopkinton and Wellesley. She was a graduate of Dana Hall School in Wellesley and she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College.

Marie’s love of United States and world history led to a career as a middle school social studies teacher. She dedicated many years to the Milford Public Schools system, teaching her favorite subject and actively participating in the annual school trips to Washington, D.C. After retiring, Marie enjoyed many happy years of traveling worldwide and vacationing on Cape Cod. However, treasured time spent with her family was most important to her, especially with her cherished grandchildren.

A deeply committed Catholic, Marie was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Milford. At her parish, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Women’s Club and Mother’s Day Rose Drive committee, a religious education teacher and a Eucharistic Minister, dedicating countless hours bringing communion and companionship to the sick and homebound. Marie had a particular devotion to the Blessed Mother and the rosary, which she prayed daily after morning Mass. She was committed to many religious and charitable organizations such as Problem Pregnancy, Massachusetts Citizens For Life, America Needs Fatima and the Maryknoll Missioners. In addition to her humanitarian efforts she had a strong interest in the

local political community.

Marie is survived by five proud children: Mary E. Creedon of Plano, Texas; Richard P. Creedon and wife Lynn of Vernon, New York; Marie B. Creedon of Milford; Christine M. Creedon of Milford; and Kathleen M. Pacella and husband Peter of Milford. Marie was predeceased by daughter Karen L. Creedon. Marie was also a loving and devoted sister to the late Leon E. Kelley, George T. Kelley and John X. Kelley, M.M. Also surviving are her four adoring grandchildren, Shannon Ferguson and husband Tyler of Fairport, New York, Daniel and David Pacella of Milford, and Lucille Creedon of Milford, along with her two great grandchildren Kian and Ruari Ferguson of Fairport, New York, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Norman Shachoy Norman J. Shachoy of Mattapoisett died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Feb. 7. His life was filled with his great loves — his wife and family, his work and the sea.

Norm and Maryellen (Sullivan) met as teenagers in Mattapoisett and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They lived in and around Boston for most of their lives except when Norm’s work took them to London in the 1970s. They spent all their summers on Buzzards Bay and in Mattapoisett and Marion, where they moved when Norm retired.

Norman attended Monsignor James Coyle High School in Taunton and studied engineering at Villanova University.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Villanova Law School offered him a full scholarship that changed the course of his life. After law school, Norm joined Bingham Dana & Gould in Boston, where he practiced for 40 years.

He advised many businesses, large and small, and represented major financial institutions, locally and internationally.

Maryellen introduced Norm to sailing on Buzzards Bay and it became his passion. His happiest times were spent on the water with family and friends.

As a couple, they cruised from Canada to the Caribbean, putting thousands of miles under their sloop, Volunteer. Racing to Bermuda eight times with family and friends as crew was his life’s big adventure. Smoking cigars, drinking rum and swapping sea stories with his devoted crew brought him great joy.

Norman was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Mary, and his brother, Paul. In addition to his wife, Maryellen, he leaves his sisters, Elaine Valovic of Hopkinton and Diane Trainor of Sebastian, Florida; his son Jamey and wife Laura Ryan and their children, Katherine, Ben and Patrick; and his son Christopher and wife Meredith Clark and their children, Brooke, Reed and Conrad.

Patricia Grogan Patricia M. Grogan, 82, of Westborough, passed away Jan. 28. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Francis J. Grogan.

Born in Mattapoisett, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Ethel C. (Raymond) Merchant. Patricia graduated from Southborough High School and received an associate degree in business from Quinsigamond Community College.

Patricia was employed in the customer service department at Anderson Products prior to her retirement. She also was a member of the Steel Workers Union.

She was a member of the First Community Church in Southborough, volunteered at the Westborough Senior Center, and worked part-time as a receptionist at the Willows. She enjoyed traveling to Fort Lauderdale, golfing and playing piano. Patricia had a lively sense of humor, celebrated any occasion with ice cream, and enjoyed painting and playing cards. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by three children, Christine (Tina) MacConnell and her husband, Jon, of Hopkinton, JoAnn Dwyer and her husband, Tom, of Westborough, and Charlene Slocum and her husband, Brad, of Canton; six grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson and her husband, Andrew, Emily Dwyer, Sam MacConnell and his wife, Julie, Scott MacConnell, Bradford Slocum Jr. and Justin Slocum; one great-grandson, Zane Johnson; a stepdaughter-in-law, Cheryl Kelley, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by a stepson, James Kelley, and her siblings, Carroll Chase, Robert Merchant and Raymond Merchant.

Patricia’s family would like to thank the staff at Saint Vincent’s PICU for all of their care and attentiveness.

A graveside service was to be held privately with burial at St John’s Cemetery in Worcester. Services are under the care of the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home.

Richard Brault Richard R. Brault, 95, a Hopkinton veteran who served in the battles of Okinawa, Tinian and Saipan, died peacefully on Feb. 6.

He was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Dr. Norbert R. and Florence

(Chartrand) Brault. After his junior year of high school, Richard joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Richard trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before assignment to the Pacific Theater. During WWII, he served with the 10th Marine (Artillery) Regiment 2nd Battalion, Company D, 2nd Marine Division.

After the war, Richard completed high school and attended Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry before starting his 32-year career with Prudential Life Insurance. In retirement, he served as chaplain for Post 202 American Legion in Hopkinton, worked tirelessly to help pass Senate Bill 1534 for disabled veterans, served on the building committee for the Hopkinton Senior Center, was a member of the Hopkinton Board of Health, and participated in the 50th Citizens’ Legislative Seminar. He was an outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and sports enthusiast, and he participated in numerous veterans events in town, including the monthly Veterans Breakfast at the Senior Center.

Later in life, Richard discovered a love for playing Santa each holiday season for Weston Nurseries, local businesses and St. Gabriel’s parish. His white beard and favorite red suit attire will remain in the hearts of many.

Mr. Brault is survived by his loving wife, M. Virginia Brault (Verdi), and his children, Rev. Laurence V. Brault, pastor of St. Gabriel’s parish in Upton, Judith Brault (daughter-in-law) of Glen Rock, New Jersey, Richard N. and Eileen Brault of York, Maine, Joseph and Denise Brault of Milford, Carolyn and Dana Baron of Whitinsville, Thomas A. and Betty Brault of Upton, and Christine Brault and Ken Mayer of Acton, along with 15 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Dr. Peter V. Brault (2020), a grandchild, Stephen R. Brault, his brothers, Dr. Clement E. Brault, V. Paul Brault, Gelose G. Brault, Bernard B. Brault, Dr. Denis D. Brault, and Dr. Jerome J. Brault; and sisters Rose A. Crossley and Pauline Brault.

He was a very proud United States Marine and veteran with a kind soul and jovial presence. Oorah, Santa! May there be clear skies for his sleigh ride to the stars.

A wake was held in the church at St. Gabriel’s in Upton on Feb. 11. The funeral Mass and burial were private.

Services are under the care of the Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland.

ARRESTS February 10

10:54 p.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officers Robert Ekross and Cody Normandin pursued an operator who had been driving on the wrong side of the roadway on Wood Street and pursued him into Ashland. The Ashland Police Department was notified and intercepted the driver. Officer Normandin arrested a 44-year-old Ashland resident and charged him with marked lanes violation, failure to stop/ yield, number plate violation, speeding in violation of special regulation, operating as to endanger, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, OUI, fourth offense, and failure to stop for police.

2:13 p.m. A caller from a Fruit Street business reported the theft of prescription medicine. Officer Philip Powers responded and took a report.

2:15 p.m. A caller reported a tow truck dumped a vehicle onto the property of his Hayden Rowe Street business. Officers Matthew Santoro and Moira McGaffigan responded and notified the owner of the vehicle, who stated the towing company dropped it off at the wrong location. The owner was to retrieve the vehicle.

2:37 p.m. A Meserve Street caller complained about a business possibly dumping snow from a parking lot onto his property. The incident was logged.

3:40 p.m. A Grove Street caller reported stalking via Venmo. Officer Tyler Brabham responded and spoke with the reporting person.

4:44 p.m. A Hidden Brick Road resident reported property damage after discovering multiple mailboxes knocked down. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded and took a report.

6:39 p.m. A caller reported a loose dog on Hayden Rowe Street. Sergeant Matthew McNeil responded and the dog was gone upon his arrival.

10:05 p.m. A caller requested a check of a vehicle parked on Ridge Road. Officer Tyler Brabham responded and all was OK.

7:30 a.m. A caller reported tree branches weighing wires down on Front Street. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and reported all checked out OK. 9:30 a.m. A caller reported a truck was blocking the roadway of Saddle Hill Road and a school bus could not get by. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and the bus had already passed by.

9:38 a.m. A Grove Street resident complained of a neighbor dumping snow on his property, preventing gas from being delivered. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and took a report.

11:45 a.m. A caller reported a person in a blue sedan on West Main Street attempted to lure a female into the car. Sergeants Timothy Brennan and Scott van Raalten and Officers Brendon Lyver, Benjamin Stickney, Moira McGaffigan and Ryan Polselli responded and investigated. The parties were located and it was determined to be a misunderstanding.

1:18 p.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident on Downey Street with no personal injuries.

3:44 p.m. A walk-in handed in a wallet found on a bench on Lumber Street. The owner was contacted.

10:56 a.m. A walk-in from Woodview Way reported stolen packages. Officer Brian Sanchioni assisted and took a report.

1:38 p.m. A caller reported suspicious activity on South Mill Street, where an unoccupied car was parked for several hours. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and reported nothing suspicious or hazardous.

3:56 p.m. A Phipps Street caller reported unemployment fraud and wanted it logged.

7:28 p.m. A Forest Lane caller reported he received threats from a recently evicted tenant. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and took a report.

11:50 p.m. A caller reported suspicious activity in a Hayden Rowe Street parking lot, where a person sat in a blue Toyota sedan while another person walked around checking doors of a building.

Sergeant William Burchard and Officer Stephen Buckley responded and spoke to the person, a janitor. All was OK.

February 5

5:34 a.m. A caller reported a deer in the middle of the roadway of East Main Street. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and moved the deer off to the side of the road. A message was left for the animal control officer.

9:31 a.m. Sergeant Matthew McNeil reported a tree on Clinton Street was leaning into the roadway.

The DPW was notified.

5:21 p.m. A caller reported a cover coming off a hole in the ground on Kimball Road. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil responded and checked the area with a negative find.

7:35 p.m. A motorist reported an erratic operator tailgating and passing on the right on Main Street.

Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Ryan Polselli responded and spoke with the operator.

9:03 p.m. A Davis Road resident reported someone banging on the building outside of her apartment.

Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Ryan Polselli responded and checked the area with a negative find.

February 6

9:00 a.m. A walk-in complained of the highway department plowing snow in front of his mailbox.

Officer Philip Powers advised him to contact the DPW. 3:24 p.m. A caller reported a road rage incident that started on Main Street an hour earlier and continued with a male driver following her into Westborough. Officer Tyler Brabham instructed the caller to call back if she gets more information or runs into the individual again.

8:03 p.m. A Fruit Street resident complained of a dog barking outside for three hours. Officer Preston Mucciarone responded and spoke with the homeowner, who was to put the dog inside for the night.

10:18 p.m. A Grove Street caller complained of noise coming from a party in the area. Sergeant William Burchard and Officer Preston Mucciarone responded and took a report.

February 7

6:34 a.m. A caller reported a male dressed in black appeared to have wanted to break glass at a Grove Street building. The person fled on foot on Main Street toward Town Hall when the caller flashed her car lights. Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officers Cody Normandin, Brittany Firth, Brian Sanchioni and K9 Titan responded and located the person. A report was to follow.

7:12 a.m. A caller reported a dead deer on the roadway of Chestnut Street. It was not in a hazardous spot. A message was left for the animal control officer.

10:14 a.m. A caller complained of Girl Scouts too close to the roadway on Main Street. Officer Philip Powers responded and reported they were holding cookie signs while standing on the sidewalk.

All was OK. 12:20 p.m. Officers Jay Deiana and Philip Powers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving two cars and personal injuries. An ambulance was requested and transported one person with head pain to the hospital. A report was to follow.

2:34 p.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident on Wood Street involving three cars. Officers Philip Powers and Jay Deiana responded and reported no injuries.

The Hopkinton Independent • February 24, 2021 • 19 3:22 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle was stuck in the middle of the roadway on Legacy Farms North. Officer Tyler Brabham responded and requested a tow truck, which towed the vehicle home.

8:42 p.m. A caller reported a chimney fire on Nicholas Road. Officer Tyler Brabham responded along with the Fire Department. The fire was extinguished.

February 8

9:53 a.m. Multiple callers reported a tractor-trailer unit stuck on Lumber Street. Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officer Brendon Lyver responded and reported no damage. A tow truck removed the vehicle.

12:23 p.m. A Revolutionary Way caller reported one of his vehicles was stolen and the other was broken into.

Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officers Ryan Polselli and Brendon Lyver responded and took a report. Officer Lyver subsequently located the vehicle in another part of the complex.

5:15 p.m. A caller reported a disabled motor vehicle on Hayward Street.

Officers Preston Mucciarone and Tyler Brabham responded and requested a tow truck. A courtesy transport to the station was provided for the driver.

5:59 p.m. A motorist reported an erratic operator on West Main Street. Sergeant Matthew McNeil responded and the vehicle was gone upon his arrival.

February 9

12:18 a.m. A caller reported a dog barking on Mount Auburn Street.

Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officer Robert Ekross responded and assisted in placing the dog inside.

7:38 a.m. A Trevor Lane caller reported an outside odor of natural gas.

Officer Brendon Lyver responded along with the Fire Department and confirmed the odor. Eversource was contacted and took over at the scene.

2:25 p.m. A caller reported a car hit a snow bank on Cedar Street and was stuck. No injuries were reported. Officer Ryan Polselli and Sergeant Matthew McNeil responded and contacted a towing company for a winch-out.

4:53 p.m. Officer Tyler Brabham responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on School Street. No personal injuries were reported. A tow truck and then a flatbed were requested. Officer Brabham took a report.

4:55 p.m. On East Main Street, Officer Philip Powers checked on a vehicle that slid off the roadway, and he assisted in removing it from the snow.

7:32 p.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle pulling kids on a sled on Trevor Lane. Officer Tyler Brabham responded, and they were gone upon his arrival.

February 10

6:07 a.m. A caller reported a small bus with its hazards on parked for over 30 minutes on East Main Street. Officer Robert Ekross responded and found the driver with the bus, which was being towed.

9:50 a.m. An Oliver Lane walkin reported unemployment fraud and wanted it logged.

2:35 p.m. A Grove Street caller reported a person would not pay a fee that was due. Officers Jessica Ferreira, Ryan Polselli and Philip Powers responded and took a report.

February 11

5:40 a.m. A caller reported a hitand-run motor vehicle accident on East Main Street involving a white vehicle that headed toward Holliston. Both Holliston and Milford Police Departments were notified of the erratic driver. The incident was logged.

8:37 a.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident with no personal injuries on West Main Street. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and requested a tow for one vehicle. Officer Cody Normandin provided one person with a courtesy transport home. A report was to follow.

8:41 a.m. A Saddle Hill Road resident reported someone struck her mailbox late the previous night and wanted the incident logged. Officer Brian Sanchioni checked the area for possible additional property damage.

10:52 a.m. An Elm Street caller reported someone struck her mailbox and drove away. Officer Jay Deiana responded and spoke with the reporting person.

February 12

11:19 a.m. A caller reported an injured hawk on Main Street. Officers Moira McGaffigan and Brian Sanchioni responded along with the animal control officer and reported the hawk was not injured; it was feasting on some prey.

1:39 p.m. A caller reported unemployment fraud and wanted it logged.

6:11 p.m. A caller reported a case of larceny. Officer Tyler Brabham took a report.

6:43 p.m. A caller reported finding a Bank of America bag containing money on West Main Street. The caller gave the bag to a bank employee but wanted an officer to pick it up. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and retrieved the bag of money.

8:22 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle off the roadway of School Street with deployed airbags. Officers Preston Mucciarone and Brendon Lyver responded and reported the vehicle was in Upton,

and the driver was changing a tire. There were no injuries and the Upton Police Department was to respond.

10:01 p.m. An anonymous caller reported a large gathering of over 15 people at a Wild Road residence. Officer Tyler Brabham responded and did not see an excess of vehicles in the area and could not see anyone inside.

February 13

12:30 a.m. A caller reported a loud noise coming from a Hayden Rowe Street restaurant. Officers Stephen Buckley, Cody Normandin and Brian Sanchioni responded and reported a minor verbal altercation in the parking lot had taken place and all involved parties left before their arrival.

2:02 a.m. A caller reported a possible drunk driver on West Main Street.

Officers Cody Normandin and Stephen Buckley responded and the driver checked out OK. 8:27 p.m. A Saddle Hill Road resident reported a possible fire in the home under construction across the street.

Officer Brendon Lyver responded along with the Fire Department. The fire was contained to a propane heater in the garage, which was subsequently shut down.

February 14

3:54 a.m. A Walcott Street caller complained of a neighbor playing loud music and refusing to turn it down. Officer Cody Normandin responded and found all quiet and was unable to make contact with the neighbor. The caller stated he could still hear music from inside his house and he would speak with the neighbor in the morning.

2:32 p.m. A caller reported unemployment fraud and wanted it logged.

3:33 p.m. A Coburn Road caller reported a yellow Lab followed her home, and the dog was brought to Baypath on Legacy Farms North. The owner was subsequently located.

5:57 p.m. A CVS employee on Main Street reported the outside odor of natural gas. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded along with the Fire Department, and zero readings were found. No odor was detected.

7:27 p.m. A caller reported an erratic operator on Main Street. Officers Preston Mucciarone and Tyler Brabham responded and checked the area with a negative find.

11:56 p.m. A caller reported a road hazard on Chestnut Street, where a vehicle was parked on the side of the road.

Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officer Robert Ekross responded and reported the vehicle was moved.

February 15

10:57 a.m. A Tammer Lane resident reported unemployment fraud and wanted it logged.

12:10 p.m. A caller reported a large cardboard box in the roadway of East Main Street. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and removed it.

1:57 p.m. A Whisper Way caller requested an officer to stand by while the caller removed some personal belongings from the residence. Officer Ryan Polselli assisted and took a report.

7:33 p.m. A Hayward Street caller reported his vehicle was vandalized. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded and took a report.

8:45 p.m. A caller reported a semi truck was stuck across East Main Street.

Officers Tyler Brabham and Jessica Ferreira responded, and a tow truck was requested.
