he Hopkinton School Committee’s 3-2 vote to become the first Massachusetts community to lift the mask requirement for COVID-19 vaccinated students and staff for a three-week trial period in November has brought forth a range of opinions from both inside and outside the community. Superintendent Carol Cavanaugh recommended to the School Committee at its Oct. 21 meeting that a trial period at Hopkinton High School be instituted before the holiday season, lifting the indoor school mask requirement from Nov. 1-19, with a return to the previous policy resuming on Nov. 22. “It’s so interesting where people are,” Cavanaugh said in an interview with The Independent. “They’re all over the place.” While she said that some people are “vehemently opposed” to the new policy, others are “really supportive of this, and some people are tentative about it.”

PINK VS. PANTHERS

Hopkinton High School senior Kate Powers goes up for the spike during an Oct. 20 victory over the visiting Holliston Panthers. The Hillers, who wore pink uniforms as part of their Dig Pink fundraiser for cancer research, took an undefeated record into the state tournament.

he level of PFAs — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — in the town’s water supply is at a higher-thanmaximum contaminant level allowed for the third straight month, putting Hopkinton in violation of the state drinking water regulations. Department of Public Works Director John Westerling hosted an hour-long public information meeting Oct. 26 with officials from the town and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to explain the situation, how the PFAs content could affect vulnerable populations, and the steps that will be taken next.

One of the wells at the town’s Fruit Street facility continues to test for PFAs at a higher rate than the state allows.
