PFAS problem spreads to other parts of town

ot only is Hopkinton’s PFAS problem not improving, the chemicals are turning up in other water supplies in town, health director Shaun McAuliffe shared Feb. 28.

Speaking at the Board of Health’s regular meeting, McAuliffe said elevated levels of PFAS (manmade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — previously detected in Well 6 of the town’s water supply off Fruit Street — have been detected in the water supplies for the Hopkinton Country Club, the MetroWest YMCA facility and the Village of Highland Park community (Wedgewood Drive area).

“The DEP [Department of Environmental Protection] has had an open dialogue with all three parties, they’ve gone through the notification process and they are working towards developing solutions to help those three water supplies,” McAuliffe said.

Bully for pit bulls, or show caution?

L

ast year, the Hopkinton Independent started partnering with Baypath Animal Society to promote an adoptable animal in each issue.

Recently, the organization promoted a pair of pit bulls, which prompted some back-and-forth between residents via letters to the editor.

On one side are people who claim bulls are more INDEPENDENT pit aggressive and danTHOUGHTS gerous than other breeds. On the other JERRY SPAR side are those who insist any dog’s aggressiveness is due to how they are raised, not their breed.

I checked in with Elizabeth Jefferis, Baypath’s executive director, as well as Beth MacLeod, a veteran dog trainer who serves as the organization’s director of training and behavior.

“I’ve been in animal welfare for 15 years,” said Jefferis. “To a lot of us, what is a breed anymore? A lot of these animals are mixed. You just can’t generalize. What we see is predominantly mixes, and you’ve got to deal with the dog as an individual.

“You take in the history that you know. A lot of times we don’t get history. We have a process. We do behavior evaluations. We monitor the animal. It’s constantly fluid, the plan with any animal, watching how they react in a stressful situation, in a shelter. We also have an excellent foster program to get us more information if possible. But we deal with the dogs as individuals.”

Added MacLeod: “It’s all about how the dog is trained. It doesn’t mean there’s not a genetic component, but that’s true with every single breed. In all honesty, I have a very robust practice where I am handling aggressive and reactive dogs, and maybe one out of 10 of those dogs that I’m working

with is a pit bull. I can’t tell you what that anecdotal data means — maybe pit bull people don’t seek out a trainer, I don’t know — but I do know that is not the breed I see most often when I am working with people.”

MacLeod acknowledged that DNA plays a part, but she says it’s a history of humans breeding the dogs for fighting and aggressiveness that has created this problem. She encourages pit bull owners to do their part to change the narrative.

“This is a breed that has a reputation, and it’s your responsibility to train appropriately with compassion and with kindness and with science, frankly, so that your dog is a breed ambassador,” she said.

Jefferis, who also serves as the town’s animal inspector, owns a pit bull mix herself and has brought her to events in town and even introduced her to deaf students.

“I don’t take it lightly,” she said.

“I never want anyone to get hurt, obviously, but I also would never want to put myself in a position of that level of liability if I didn’t think I had an absolutely solid dog.”

Jefferis did acknowledge that pit bulls can deliver more damage when they do bite, only because pit bulls tend to be heavier and stronger. But she said any larger dog has the same potential.

Jefferis also said many pit bulls — often because of their reputation — come from bad environments.

“So many of them come out of these horrific situations,” she said.

“They didn’t get to their puppy kindergarten like other dogs raised in other situations. And then they’re bred and bred and bred.”

Ultimately, it’s up to a potential adopter and the shelter to work together to find a good match. Jefferis said Baypath takes the time to ensure a dog’s personality is the right fit for the home to which they are being sent.

Carver bids farewell to Fire Department The Hopkinton Fire Department recently held a retirement party for longtime administrative assistant Mary Carver.

Miller said the department was in the process of interviewing candidates to fill the position.

Keep herbicides out of Maspenock Recently a letter was sent to 600 people abutting Lake Maspenock. It is a letter of intent that did not state what the intent is. It would allow the town to treat the lake for weed growth including using herbicides. This is the same plan that was voted down in town meeting in 2015 and voted down LETTERS TO by Conservation Commission in 2018. I believe that this new application is ignoring the of the people of Hopkinton. Haven’t we already rejected the use of diquat in our lake?

On March 15, the Conservation Commission will meet via Zoom. Go to the town website and attend the meeting if you are concerned about the poison plan. Let’s not let them push this through at a time when larger public forums are not available. Why is this being pursued when it has already been democratically rejected?

Don’t let injury stop you from running a marathon

his story evolves from doing research for my article on the undefeated 1955 Hopkinton High School football team (Hopkinton Independent, Nov. 24, 2021).

I needed the scores of the football games from 1955, and I had three yearbooks from Hopkinton High School, but not the one I needed: 1956.

I went to the Hopkinton Public Library and found the 1956 yearbook. I turned to the football team page and there was a picture of the team and the word “UNDEFEATED” over it, but no game scores. Every yearbook I have ever seen shows the football scores, but not this one!

I figured the library might have microfilm of old newspapers from 1955, but no. The librarian gave me the names of libraries in Milford and Framingham where they have extensive microfilm in their archives.

Driving up Hayden Rowe, I got to thinking.

Back in 1955, Jack “Hanny” Hanifin was the custodian of the AA Clubhouse. Hanny was a fixture at the ball field. He had moved and cared for the old baseball and football fields, and even umpired baseball games. Since the new high school had been built, his domain had shrunk to the old AA building and the lawn around it.

Now, here was my thought: When we returned on the bus from our games, the score of the game we had played was already painted on the chimney of the old AA Clubhouse. Apparently, someone phoned Hanny at game’s end, and he would promptly letter the chimney.

Again, I got to thinking, I wonder, just maybe???

Now, over the years, the AA Clubhouse at 88A Hayden Rowe has been reinvented for many uses.

It is used now as offices for Youth Placement. So, I went down to the old AA Clubhouse and rang the bell until someone let me in.

I found the old cellar stairs, and, with flashlight in hand, opened the door, turned on the light switch and went down the stairs. Lo and behold,

AMAZING!! After 66 years, with all that has happened in this world, there, undisturbed, like someone had just shut off the light and left the area, stood The Chimney.

eading up to the April 18 Boston Marathon, the Independent will profile local charity runners. This issue we highlight Margot LaFreniere, who is running to raise funds for Sophie’s Hope Foundation.

The Hopkinton-based charity was started by LaFreniere and her husband, James LaFreniere, after their daughter, Sophie, was diagnosed with glycogen storage disease in September of 2019 at the age of 2.

“Sophie’s Hope Foundation is on a mission to develop new treatments and ultimately a cure for glycogen storage disease Type 1b,” LaFreniere writes on her fundraising page (givengain.com/cc/sophieshope2022bostonmarathon). “GSD1b is a life-threatening ultra-rare genetic disease that has no existing FDA approved treatments. We are on a mission to change that.”

This marks the first marathon for LaFreniere, who lives less than 2 miles from the start line.

“We have said that nothing will stop us from finding a cure for Sophie, and we will do what it takes,” she writes.

three-alarm fire broke out at 10 Mayhew Street in the early afternoon of March 1. Heavy smoke could be seen in the downtown area around 12:30 p.m.

According to a Hopkinton Fire Department NEWS spokesman, firefighters BRIEFS arrived to find heavy fire showing from a secondfloor porch on the left side of the home, with flames extending into the second floor and attic. A second and third alarm were struck because an aggressive attack on the fire required additional manpower to open up walls and ceilings and get at the deep-seated flames. The fire was under control at approximately 1:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported, although six residents of the home were displaced.

HFD Chief Bill Miller said the following day that the cause appeared to be “careless disposal of smoking material.” It was under investigation by the Hopkinton Fire Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

In addition to Hopkinton, crews from multiple neighboring towns, including Ashland, Southborough, Westborough, Milford, Framingham and Hopedale, responded to help put out the blaze, while firefighters from Northborough covered Hopkinton stations.

“I’d like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their vital assistance, and all of the firefighters who responded for a job well done,” Miller said. “This was a tough fire and everyone did an outstanding job.”

The house, which is more than 140 years old, is listed as being owned by Zhao Wang of Bolton.

Select Board eulogizes Doyle At its March 1 meeting, the Select Board paid tribute to longtime Hopkinton High School teacher and coach Aubrey Doyle, who died Feb. 21 at the age of 90.

“He was kind of the epitome of what Hopkinton used to be,” Brendan Tedstone said. “A really, really wonderful guy.”

Tedstone said he had Doyle as a teacher and remained in touch throughout the years.

“He turned a lot of the people in town into good students,” Tedstone said,

adding: “I learned a lot of lessons from him throughout my [life].”

Tedstone said Doyle — for whom one of the gyms at Hopkinton Middle School is named — frequently could be spotted wearing a green jacket and tie in support of the town and school.

“He just bled green,” Tedstone said.

“He really was the epitome of someone who had Hopkinton pride.”

Mary Jo LaFreniere noted that Doyle’s children have served on town committees, stating, “His legacy lives on.”

New police officer introduced Matthew LaTour was unanimously approved by the Select Board to be the town’s newest police officer.

A graduate of the State Police Municipal Academy, LaTour has been working as a police officer for the UMass Worcester Police Department, focused on the medical school and hospital. A Douglas High School product, he studied cognitive science at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2020.

LaTour was president and captain of the Boxing Club at UConn and practices Brazilian jiu jitsu for self-defense.

He also has trained in de-escalation strategies.

LaTour said he worked some traffic shifts in town recently, and that piqued his interest in joining the HPD. “I sort of got a really good feel from the town,” he said. “Everyone had a lot of respect for the Police Department. I noticed it was a very active community.

A lot of people were engaged in what was going on in Hopkinton, so that was something that I was interested in being a part of. It’s important to be involved in the community and also to have a community that wants to be involved in making the community better. That makes the job of the police a lot easier.”

sued a cease and desist order from the town’s zoning enforcement officer.

Harry Roberts and Anna Dorcey, who live on Connelly Hill Road, own the property — which they refer to as 1790 Stone Manor — and listed it online as being available for private functions.

They indicated the barn was newly renovated and includes a bar area, a large service kitchen, an interior balcony that could be used by a DJ, and space for dinner and dancing, with a capacity of 100 people.

Charles Kadlik, the town’s zoning enforcement officer and director of municipal inspections, sent the couple a letter on Oct. 21 of last year reminding them that before they purchased the property they were informed that events for profit were not allowed by right or by special permit based on the zoning laws for a residential district.

“The reasoning behind this is that since it is a residential district, not business or industrial, your neighbors should not be subjected to the traffic, noise or any other annoyance generated by the letting of the barn space for these events,” Kadlik’s letter read.

Kadlik also noted that photos provided by the owners appeared to show “significant work” had been done on the interior of the barn “without the benefit of required permits.”

The owners started an online petition that had 533 supporters as of March 2. In an update on the petition webpage posted Feb. 28, Dorcey wrote that the

Board of Appeals might vote on the variance at its March 9 meeting “if all goes well” but expressed pessimism about it being approved.

“We’ve had to agree to several stipulations to make this happen, however, we do not seem to have enough support of the Board of Appeals members,” she wrote. “It is unfortunate as they don’t seem to think this is a need for the town, or that our property would meet the standards of a variance. We are now exploring what our options are for the property, but it [is] likely we will not be able to keep it as is, unfortunately.”

Resident earns spot on ‘Domino Masters’ Domino | from page 1

judges: actress and author Danica McKellar, former NFL star Vernon Davis and professional domino artist Steve Price.

Men and women ranging in age from 19-69 will compete in teams of three. In each episode, teams will be given a theme for their toppling challenge. Those who most amaze the judges will progress to the next round until the ultimate finale. At stake is a cash prize, a trophy and the grand title of Domino Masters.

“The show really challenges conventions; you have to make decisions and take risks, you have to push the envelope,” says Broughton, explaining that chain reaction art encompasses all kinds of materials, including but not limited to dominos.

Speaking passionately about his craft, Broughton says he’s always enjoyed working with things that involve motion.

“As a child, I played with Hot Wheels and marble chutes, and I had wooden blocks that I’d set up like dominoes; but I was always the kid trying to do stuff you shouldn’t do … so I was always putting cars down chutes, or trying to get marbles to roll uphill, or blending toys together to get them to work as one unit,” he recalls with a laugh.

Broughton, who attended Leominster High School and Hampshire College before moving to Hopkinton, later found an online community of people who were creating unique machines in their homes and posting videos of their experiments, and felt he could make a meaningful contribution.

“Discovering that community was the impetus for me to start building in earnest,” he says. Now a professional chain reaction artist, the 23-year-old Broughton – known online as “jackofallspades98” – has a YouTube following of 5.8K subscribers.

His partners on “Domino Masters” are 21-year-old twins Derek Koops and Alex Koops of Sioux City, Iowa.

Together, the three are the “Dominerds.”

Broughton jokes, “It’s important to stress, we’re not nerds who also like dominoes — we’re just nerds about dominoes!” He says he couldn’t have asked for a better team, and describes how they build off one another’s strengths.

“Derek and Alex are the domino experts, so they do the domino part; I’m the machine guy, so I do the chain reaction part. And of course, there’s a huge emphasis on both in the show — you can’t have one without the other. So our team dynamic is that we have our specialties, but we each have an intimate understanding of the other’s art form.”

He notes that there is more to the craft than the audience might expect.

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions about what we do is that it’s more akin to engineering than to art,” he shares. “I hope that’s something the show really disproves, because it’s more about art. It’s about making it look good, and creating a sense of wonder, suspense, humor; it’s about surprise and excitement. It’s about subverting expectations.”

While engineering focuses on precision and reliability, Broughton explains, “Chain reaction is about using whatever materials are available and solving a problem that doesn’t exist in the most unreliable way possible.

“Sure, it has to ‘work’; but the hallmark of a true domino master is when the technical aspects are second nature and you can focus on the other elements. It’s about all kinds of other things besides just making it work — it’s telling a story.”

Those stories combine fun with value: businesses have started to harness chain reaction art to promote product launches or showcase different ways their products can be used. Broughton has done work for companies across the United States, including Gillette, Disney, Microsoft and “The Ellen Show,” as well as various museum events, such as Domino World 2019.

“I want to remind people that the objections were for the trail to go directly on the neighborhood streets in Charlesview, and that is what raised a lot of objections,” he said. “There wasn’t any formal survey taken as to whether people objected to the trail going west of Charlesview.”

Added Parker: “With regards to the roadblocks we’ve encountered before, as far as I know, there’s only one property owner who raised an objection on the west and told us not to talk to him again. I don’t think it’s reasonable to allow a single landowner to block the entire route. However strong his opinions are, I think he owes it to the town to at least explain why he has that view and whether or not he would accommodate any kind of remediation, like, for example, payment for an easement — which is something, for all I know, we never raised with him.

“So maybe I’m wrong about that, but my understanding is there’s a single property owner on the west who’s blocked that route. Now we’ve recently heard from a lot of people along Hayden Rowe who aren’t keen on having their front yards cut into

Moran said that she had multiple conversations with a Charlesview-area property owner a few years ago and was told “point blank no” at the time, although she was not aware if that individual might have changed his mind since then.

School Committee members seek to ‘strengthen the dialogue’

ollowing recent issues of divisiveness, the School Committee on March 3 had a midyear check-in of its norms and beliefs, part of its protocols and best practices for effective meetings.

While at recent meetings some members expressed frustration with how meetings were run and a lack of support for each other, this discussion was more low key.

“Even though there have been times when we have been intense in our opinions, I think it is a strength that we represent our community with not always having all the same views,” Chair Nancy Cavanaugh said.

Member Joe Markey concurred, saying “I still think in our public meetings we’ve been a model for civil discussion.”

However, Lya Batlle-Rafferty questioned that assessment.

“I would actually disagree with that,” she said. “And I really appreciated the offer of a consultant to come and speak with us individually and come up with general tasks that we can do as a School Committee to strengthen the dialogue, because yes, I believe there have been moments where civility has not really reigned, so I would like to get us back to the point where that is a standard thing.”

Added Batlle-Rafferty: “I think airing emotions is good, but it doesn’t lead us to resolution. So having somebody who can help us come up with steps and ways to get to kind of more of a resolved

state would be great.”

Amanda Fargiano supported the hiring of a consultant, noting that it would have been a good idea even before the issues that recently arose.

“I’m a thousand percent behind it,” she said. “I really wanted to do teambuilding last year. I think it’s always good. Given the pressures that we’ve been under — last year we welcomed two new members in the middle of a pandemic. We met so much. There was a lot of pressure.

“Last year I thought we couldn’t get any more pressure. And this year we had more pressure. Not only is there pandemic fatigue, but we’re also trying to support the superintendent and our staff and our students and recovering and sort of re-emerging, and it’s just been difficult. So I thought we needed it last year, and this year I think any team would need it.”

Added Batlle-Rafferty: “Not only is there a pandemic, but then you also take into account that we’ve all worked a full day, and we come here already tired and already kind of worn out, and then we’re dealing with very stressful topics.”

Markey, who with Meg Tyler was accused by a resident of an open meeting law violation but cleared after an investigation by Superintendent Carol Cavanaugh, supported bringing in a consultant who would talk to members individually and as a group.

“The biggest challenge school committees have is the restrictions that we have as a public body,” he said. “I think this is a way to achieve it while adhering to the requirements of public open meetings and things like that. That’s

really what this is about, so I just want to make sure people understand it’s really a technical issue of how you get a team to be able to talk to each other given that there’s restrictions on School Committee members talking to each other between meetings, so I think it’s a good way to do it.”

Security camera policy debated The committee discussed a proposed policy regarding the use of security cameras in schools, with Superintendent Cavanaugh explaining that the policy would in part serve to make families aware that the cameras are there.

“We do have them and we are using them,” she said.

Cavanaugh explained that administrators do not constantly monitor them but will go back and review footage if an incident has occurred — such as theft from a hallway locker or vandalism on athletic fields.

Markey expressed concern about the role the cameras and video play in day-to-day issues.

“I’m not sure I’m in favor of them increasingly being used,” he said. “And I would hate for us to create a set of justifications to that fact that we are increasingly using them rather than stop and inspect what are we doing here.”

Markey said he would prefer not relying on the video to solve every issue and said there should be more clarification regarding the usage in the policy rather than leaving it open-ended.

“I would like to take the least invasive approach to resolving issues and

conflicts in the school rather than let cameras because they’re so convenient be the first go-to,” he said.

He also expressed concern about the expense to the district “versus the value gained.”

Added Markey: “I think it’s worthy of a bigger community discussion.”

The superintendent stressed that the policy is designed to spread awareness more than anything else.

“We’ve been using these cameras for years and years,” she said, “and the only reason we brought this forward was that we thought this was more transparent for families to say that we are using them.”

Said Burley: “Our priority is to ensure students are supported academically, socially, emotionally and physically, and that educators have the ability to connect and deepen relationships with all of the students and each other.”

uperintendent Carol Cavanaugh announced Feb. 28 that the Hopkinton Public Schools would no longer require masking on school buses starting the following day. Windows will be kept open on the buses.

“As always, any individual who wishes to SCHOOLS continue to mask will be NOTEBOOK supported in that choice,” Cavanaugh wrote in an email to school families.

The state’s education commissioner, Jeffrey Riley, on Feb. 25 shared a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) update that masks are no longer required on school buses or vans for K-12 students and children in childcare programs. It was left up to individual schools and districts to decide whether or not to lift the requirements.

Hopkinton schools already went mask-optional in school buildings starting Feb. 28.

Resident named VP of Make-A-Wish board Hopkinton’s Timothy Grady was named vice president of the Make-AWish Massachusetts and Rhode Island Board of Directors.

A board member since 2019, Grady will chair the audit committee and continue to serve on the executive committee.

Tuesday, March 22, 7 p.m. (Zoom) Mugwort, or Artemisia vulgaris, is a plant that is woven so deeply into the folklore and mythology of countless cultures around the world. It is an ancient plant, rich with story, magic and medicine. In this one-hour class, attendees will explore the imagery, deities, planetary rulings and magical properties associated with mugwort. Sports HHS girls basketball grabs tourney win T

Hillers hockey bows out of postseason The HHS boys hockey team fell to Masconomet, 6-2, on March 3 in a Division 2 state tournament first-round game at Haverhill Valley Forum.

The Hillers, seeded 29th, fell behind 4-0 in the first period before playing the fourth-seeded hosts to a draw in the final two periods. Drew Morse and Declan Durocher scored the Hopkinton goals.

Hopkinton finished the season with a record of 10-11. …

The HHS girls hockey co-op team won the Kelly O’Leary Tournament in Auburn, turning away The Woodstock Academy, 5-3, in the championship game on Feb. 19. Morgan Fraser had two goals and an assist in the final and was named tournament MVP. In the tournament opener on Feb. 16, Hopkinton edged

he Hopkinton High School girls basketball team opened postseason play by crushing visiting Malden, 61-29, on March 2 in a Division 1 preliminary round game.

Jessie Ianelli opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to start the rout. Hopkinton led SPORTS just under seven minutes into the game ROUNDUP 18-0 and 20-2 after the first quarter. The onslaught continued in the second quarter, with the hosts taking a 32-2 lead before starting to work in some of the younger players. It was 43-10 at the half, and Malden never challenged in the second half.

Kiki Fossbender led a balanced Hillers attack with nine points. Lauren Cho scored eight, while Ianelli and Charlotte Holden each had seven. Ten Hillers recorded at least two points.

Hopkinton, the 25th seed, advanced to play at eighthseeded Chelmsford on March 4. …

The HHS boys basketball team’s impressive season came to a close March 1 with a 58-44 loss at Wellesley in a Division 1 state tournament preliminary round game.

Wellesley, seeded 31st, jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter, but the Hillers, seeded 34th, fought back and, after a steal and layup by senior guard Nate Kasper, took a 27-25 lead into the break.

The third quarter was the Hillers’ undoing, as they only scored five points in the period and trailed by eight, 40-32, heading into the final period. Things continued to spiral downward, as Wellesley scored the first six points of the quarter to grab a 14-point lead, and the hosts cruised home from there.

Kasper finished with 16 points for Hopkinton, which finished its season with a record of 14-7.

Powers continues to shine HHS senior Kate Powers won the weight throw at the New England Invitational with a school-record toss of 49 feet, 8.25 inches.

Powers also won the USA Track and Field Scholastic Division weight throw with a school-record heave of 49 feet, 4 inches. She then finished eighth at the all-state meet in the shot put on Feb. 26, six days after winning the shot put at the state Division 2 championship meet.

Also at the D2 meet, Steph Johnson finished fifth in the 1,000 meters and qualified for all-states, while Grace Joy was eighth in the same race. The 4x400 relay team of Sinead Herr, Shelby Jones, Sowmya Karthikeyan and Emily Hayward finished sixth. The 4x800 relay team of Joy, Katie Callery, Avery Sawyer and Johnson finished seventh.

On the boys side, Wyatt Ruff took fourth in the 1,000 to qualify for the all-state meet. The 4x400 relay team of Devan Donnelly, Aryan Shah, Colin Davan and Luke Boothroyd finished sixth.

Sean Golembiewski, battling a hamstring injury that kept him out of the 55-meter hurdles, finished sixth in the high jump (6-2) at the all-state meet on Feb. 26.

Sokol fifth at state wrestling HHS junior Justin Sokol took fifth at the All-State Wrestling Championship on Feb. 27 and became just the sixth wrestler in school history to qualify for the New England championships.

Sokol, wrestling at 220 pounds, took second place at the state Division 2 championships on Feb. 19. Teammate Sebastian Losada reached the sectional quarterfinals. …

Sisters Tess and Eve Weatherhead finished third and fourth, respectively, at the state championship meet for diving on Feb. 26. …

ate Powers has emerged as one of the top track and field athletes in Massachusetts and has anchored multiple state championships during her time at — Kate Powers Hopkinton. The HHS senior will continue her track career with one of the nation’s strongest Division 1 programs after signing to compete with Kentucky next season.

“It was the best combination of athletics and academics for me,” Powers said.

“It’s a great track program, top five in the country, and I felt like I fit in with the school and the whole team. It felt like home there.”

A thrower in track and field, Powers said she plans to become a physician’s assistant, and UK gives her the opportunity to pursue a degree in health sciences while setting her up to go to graduate school. She said she is not exactly sure what role she will play with the Wildcats next year, but she is looking forward to having a new experience.

“It’s a little different from Hopkinton, but I thought Lexington was a great city,” she said. “I am excited to get out of my comfort zone.”

Powers’ transition to the collegiate level comes as she wraps up a stellar high school career. She was part of state championship teams in indoor track in 2020 and volleyball last fall. Powers has also posted numerous individual accolades, including winning multiple Tri-Valley League championships in the shot put and discus.

She will head into the spring track season looking to repeat as the TVL and divisional state champ in the discus and with an eye toward capturing an all-state championship. Powers said she is hoping to top 150 feet in the discus, 160 feet in the hammer throw, and 40 feet in the shot put.

“I want to enjoy my last track and field season and be a good leader for my teammates,” she said. “I want to be there for them and focus not just on my own performances but on everyone else’s performances.”

Powers has been a good teammate throughout her career, according to Hillers track and field coach Jean Cann.

“She can be heard all around the track cheering for her teammates,” Cann said. “Fortunately for us, we still have a whole outdoor season with Kate, and then we’re excited to see her continue to excel at Kentucky.”

Cann touted Powers for her versatility. She qualified for the finals of the 55-meter dash at the TVL showcase, and her time was good enough to earn a spot in the Division 2 state championship meet. Perhaps her most impressive accomplishment was going undefeated during the pandemic-shortened season last year while throwing with her non-dominant arm after surgery.

“Kate has been an instrumental part of the team since she first joined us in spring of freshman year,” Cann said. “She pairs her talent with an admirable work ethic and competitive drive.”

Powers is finishing her final indoor season on a high note. She won a league and divisional state title in the shot put and set a new program record in the weight throw. Powers was scheduled to compete in both the Nike and New Balance national meets in March. After that, it will be time for the spring track season and then a summer of training to prepare to compete at the highest level of collegiate track and field.

“I feel like I have had a great year and I am happy with what I have been able to accomplish,” Power said before quickly adding: “But I am not satisfied.”

Aubrey Doyle

E. Aubrey Doyle, a lifelong resident of Hopkinton, passed into God’s hands on Feb. 21. Born on April 28, 1931, to W. Aubrey Doyle and Julia Halloran Doyle, Aubrey grew up on the farm at 38 Elm Street with his sister, Patricia. Aubrey was a gifted student-athlete at Hopkinton High School

after overcoming polio as a young child, earning several varsity letters as well as the Outstanding Senior award at his graduation. Following graduation he enrolled at Brown University, where he studied and played football for four years, graduating in 1954. He then entered the Army, and while at Fort McPherson in Georgia he met his future bride, Joan Courchaine. They married on Aug. 18, 1955, and remained married for 66-plus years. Aubrey and Joan raised seven children: Colleen (Ray — deceased) Charleston, Lisa (Ray) Carloni, W. Aubrey (Julie) Doyle, Julia (Paul) Rice, Sean Doyle (deceased), Tim (Sonya) Doyle and Brendan (Deena) Doyle. He leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

After the service, Aubrey began a long career at Hopkinton High School, spanning more than 35 years. He served in many roles, including math teacher, math department head and coach of multiple football, basketball and baseball teams before eventually becoming the head varsity football coach in the late 1960s through the early 1970s. He also was the athletic director for 20-plus years. The gymnasium at the middle school was named in his honor. He was an inductee in the inaugural HHS Athletic Hall of Fame class.

Aubrey loved spending time with his family and friends, following HHS sports teams, investigating HHS sports history, following Brown University sports teams and reading Irish history. He was a huge Boston sports fan, with the Patriots his favorite.

Aubrey truly appreciated everyone who gave him opportunities throughout his life and career and did his best to do the same for others.

A funeral mass was held Feb. 28 at St. John’s Church in Hopkinton, followed by burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Hopkinton. Services were under the care of the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home.

Paul Sweeney

Paul Anthony Sweeney of Ledyard, Connecticut, passed away on Feb. 12 with his wife, Claudia, and daughter, Christine, at his side.

Paul was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on May 1, 1943, to parents Ivan Francis Sweeney and Dorothy May (Silva) Sweeney. He leaves, as a hero, to Claudia (Druken), his wife of 54 years, his beloved daughter, Christine Sweeney Tourigny (Marty), absolutely awesome grandchildren Timothy, Casey, and Lily Tourigny of Hopkinton, loving sister Gale Sweeney Ernest, and nephews Douglas and Brian Ernest of Middletown, Rhode Island.

Paul graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, Rhode Island, Class of 1961, and then attended East Coast Aero-Tech in Lexington. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1965, serving in the 178th Assault Support Helicopter Company in Vietnam as crew chief on Chinook and Huey helicopters. He was honorably discharged in 1967 and remained a proud veteran. He began employment at Quonset Point Naval Air Station as a mechanic and plane captain in the helicopter flight test shop. He then transferred to supervisor of shipbuilding, Nuclear Division, Department of the Navy in Groton, Connecticut, as a quality assurance specialist and supervisor, receiving numerous performance awards throughout his distinguished career. He retired in 1999 after 33 years of dedicated and

exemplary service to the United States government.

During his years in Ledyard, he spent countless hours on baseball and football fields as a coach for the Ledyard Boys League and the Ledyard High School freshman football team.

He was a mentor and role model to the youth of Ledyard for over a decade.

After retirement, he returned to his love of the sea, making lifelong friends (Bob, Keith) at Seaport Yacht Sales in Mystic, Connecticut, and becoming a certified marine surveyor. He cherished spending time on his boat, the “Hey, Bean” at Gales Ferry Marina with best buds Wayno, Eddie, Chuck and Hoopie. He made precious memories in Florida for many years with his grandchildren, always game for playing in the pool and holding them tight on Disney rides and waterslides.

He loved his many trips to Newfoundland, Canada, with Claudia, laughing and reminiscing with relatives. And he never missed his memorable yearly trips to Dover Speedway with Chuck, Ed and special cousin Bob. Paul will be remembered for so many things, but especially for his quick wit, kind nature, and rock-solid dependability. He could fix just about anything, and if he couldn’t, he would “MacGyver it” to make it work. Paul was a truly remarkable man who was always there for friends and family.

He was kind to the core and will be missed by so many.

Paul’s extended family will reunite this spring in Newport to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

June Shanabrook

June A. Shanabrook, 88 of Hopkinton and a former longtime resident of Ashland and Weston, passed away Feb. 15 after a period of declining health. Born in Bucyrus, Ohio, she was the daughter of Frank and Lura (Brown) Zartman. She was a graduate of the College of Wooster with a bachelor’s in music education. June was a music teacher and went on to work for Tufts Health Plan as a marketing data coordinator.

June’s family story is an American journey. Her maternal grandfather was a homesteader first in New Mexico and then settling in Oklahoma before the territory became a state. The Brown

Obituaries family continues to farm that same land. Mom would tell stories of the drive from Mount Eaton, Ohio, where she grew up, to see her grandparents on the farm in Billings, Oklahoma. Both the Zartman and Shanabrook ancestors emigrated from Germany centuries ago in search of their own farmland, eventually settling in Ohio. In Mount Eaton her dad was the minister of the Evangelical and Reformed church and her mom taught piano. It was fun to hear stories of how mom dated every boy in her high school class of six and how the social studies teacher drove the class to Washington, D.C., in his station wagon for her class trip.

June went on to the College o f Wo o s t e r, w h e r e s h e m e t P a u l Shanabrook. Recently found letters originally sent to her friend Diana on her year abroad in Edinburgh revealed the courtship happening back in Wooster. After graduation in 1954 the now-engaged June taught music in Justus, Ohio. Once married in 1955, June moved to Webster Groves, Missouri, where Paul attended the Eden Seminary School. After Paul’s graduation from theology school, June and Paul moved to Cleveland for the founding of a new United Church of Christ, St. Mark’s in Cleveland. Paul later took a stewardship leadership role in the UCC main office in Boston, moved the family in 1962 with Nevin, then 4 years old, and newborn Eric to Wellesley Hills. Eliot followed in 1964, leaving three boys for June to care for! This care extended to the Atlantic Ocean, where June embraced sailing the New England coast, far from rural Ohio. In 1971, the family moved to Weston, when Paul returned to preaching at Weston Congregational Church.

June and Paul went their own ways in the early 1980s. June thrived in her work at Tufts, befriending so many people she worked with. Then living in Ashland, she worked, then retired, enjoying traveling and attending music and theater events with her boyfriend, Bruce MacDonald. June also enjoyed her volunteer work with recent immigrants finding their way.

June’s interests in music and theater were a lifelong enjoyment. Teaching piano out of the house and playing for local theater companies kept her active and fostered friendships. June embraced her New England home, finding solace and beauty here. Among her favorite places were the Isles of Shoals, Frenchboro Island, and Woodmans for fried clams! Wonderful family trips to Europe were planned by mom, Frommer’s “Europe on $50 a Day” in hand, an experience that gave her children a unique worldview experience and education.

June is survived by three sons: Nevin Shanabrook and wife Elena List of Ashland, Eric Shanabrook and wife Katherine Schrader of Salem, and Eliot Shanabrook and wife Celeste Ignacio of Marblehead. Grammy June readily accepted the role of primary babysitter for her two grandchildren, Austin and Reid. Austin is now married to Chaya with a newborn son, Yeshaya Eliahu.

Friends and family will be notified of an informal gathering, at June’s request, as an opportunity to celebrate June’s life and share memories. This will take place this spring sometime. June had wanted her ashes to be buried on her beloved Star Island, and the family will privately

honor her memory in that way.

Rose Marie Kelley-Wiseblood Rose Marie Kelley-Wiseblood, 80, of Hopkinton passed away Feb. 18 while surrounded by family, after a time of battling health issues. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Capone) Rotigliano, and Rose was the wife of the late Nathan Wiseblood. A longtime resident of Hopkinton, Rose worked as a sales clerk for CVS Pharmacy in Hopkinton and Target in Milford and later volunteered at Milford Regional Hospital.

She is survived by one son, Steven Kelley of Pawtucket, and two grandchildren, Caleb Kelley of Mendon and Casey Kelley of Gardner, along with one greatgranddaughter, Freya Kelley.

James Nugent James E. “Jim” Nugent, 67, of Sutton passed away Feb. 14 after a battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

H e i s s u rvived by his wife of 31 years, Lucille “Lucy” (Lavoie) Nugent; two stepchildren, Lisa Santiago and husband Jean of Douglas, and Crystal McManus and significant other James Kuchinski of Sutton; six grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Nugent and wife Marianne of Arlington; three sisters, Nancy Buck and husband Leo of Southborough, Kelly Whitney of Holden, and Pam Frechette and husband Dan of West Boylston; many nieces, nephews and good friends. His stepson Chad

McManus predeceased him in 2019.

Born in Boston on Oct. 14, 1954, he was raised in Hopkinton and lived in Grafton for 22 years before moving to Sutton. He graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1973. Jim worked throughout his life as a master plumber, owning and operating Paul C. Hooper Co. out of Wayland with his brother, Arthur.

Always social, with a good sense of humor, Jim was fun to be around. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing and hunting and was a life member of the Woodville Rod and Gun Club. He was a past member of the Worcester Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4311, and the Harley Owners Group H.O.G. Charter.

1:41 a.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident involving a deer on West Main Street. Officer Shannon Beloin responded and put the deer down. No personal injuries were reported.

7:15 a.m. A South Street caller reported two catalytic converters were stolen. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and took a report.

8:39 a.m. A motorist reported a motor vehicle accident with no personal injuries on East Main Street. Sergeant Timothy Brennan an Officer Brendon Lyver responded and took a report.

11:49 a.m. Officer Brendon Lyver responded to Curtis Road and took a report of a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.

12:40 p.m. A Rocky Woods Road caller reported she was tailgated and then followed to her house, where the driver of the other vehicle revved the engine and then drove away. The license plate was obtained and given to Officer Moira McGaffigan, who contacted the driver.

1:34 p.m. A caller reported a deceased animal on the side of the road on West Main Street. The animal control officer was contacted for removal.

12:37 a.m. Sergeant Arthur Schofield contacted Eversource about a large fallen branch on wires on West Main Street.

3:32 p.m. A caller reported an injured small black cat. Officers Cody Normandin and Benjamin Stickney assisted, and the animal was transported to Tufts Animal Hospital.

4:08 p.m. Officer Robert Ekross assisted a person collecting money from a victim of a past incident.

5:45 p.m. Officer Robert Ekross assisted a disabled motor vehicle broken down in a hazardous spot on Cedar Street.

10:28 p.m. Officer Cody Normandin removed a mailbox from the roadway of Wood Street.

11:38 p.m. A Bandon Lane caller reported someone was attempting to break in to his car.

Sergeant William Burchard and Officer Shannon Beloin responded and reported the car alarm was sounding due to the wind.

11:44 p.m. The State Police requested assistance locating a person who ran from them on Wood Street. Officer Stephen Buckley and Sergeant William Burchard responded to assist in the search along with the State Police K-9 unit. The individual was subsequently taken in to custody by the Westborough Police Department.

February 18

2:41 a.m. A baker at a West Main Street business reported her key didn’t work in the door, and she requested assistance. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and was unable to gain access to the building.

6:25 a.m. Officer Stephen Buckley discovered a large pothole on Saddle Hill Road, placed a cone on it, and notified the DPW. 8:06 a.m. A Constitution Court resident reported someone smashed his car window. Sergeant Arthur Schofield responded and took a report.

9:05 a.m. Sergeants Aaron O’Neil and Arthur Schofield responded to a report of a tree falling and hitting a house and gas line on Hayden Rowe Street. The Fire Department responded and reported an active gas leak and odor. Eversource was notified. The building inspector was contacted.

Sergeant O’Neil directed traffic while the Fire Department shut off the gas at the meter.

12:10 p.m. A caller reported a tree leaning on wires on West Elm Street. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil responded, placed cones in the area, and notified Eversource.

12:51 p.m. A caller requested to speak with an officer about someone who her daughter met online. Officer Cody Normandin spoke with the caller and took a report.

2:54 p.m. Officers Robert Ekross and Cody Normandin responded to a motor vehicle accident on Oakhurst Road. No personal injuries were reported.

4:59 p.m. A caller reported a raccoon was struck by a vehicle on West Main Street. Officer Robert Ekross responded and checked the area with a negative find.

7:56 p.m. A motorist reported she was harassed by a male in a 4x4 truck on West Main Street. Officer Robert Ekross responded and reported it was a road rage incident. The other vehicle was gone upon his arrival.

Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and checked the area with a negative find.

5:14 p.m. A caller reported a tree fell on top of wires on Winter Street. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and notified Eversource, which was to arrive within two hours.

9:33 p.m. Sergeant William Burchard reported someone drove over a median on West Main Street and took out two trees. He removed the trees from the roadway.

5:32 a.m. Sergeants Arthur Schofield and Aaron O’Neil and Officer Moira McGaffigan checked on reported suspicious activity on Brook Hollow Lane.

7:34 a.m. A caller reported a dog fell through ice on Huckleberry Road. Sergeant William Burchard and the animal control officer responded and checked the area with a negative find on a dog.

1:15 p.m. A motorist reported finding a stop sign on the side of the roadway on Saddle Hill Road not near any intersection. Sergeant William Burchard responded and recovered the stop sign and was to check in with the Highway Department.

7:31 p.m. Sergeant William Burchard and Officer Brendon Lyver responded along with the Fire Department to a commercial fire alarm activation on West Main Street. A second caller reported another resident opened a locked door and set off the alarm. Officer Lyver spoke with the caller along with the staff.

7:32 a.m. A caller reported a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on South Street. The caller stated the operator was a white male wearing blue sunglasses and driving a black Ford Edge or Escape with Rhode Island license plates. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and took a report.

7:49 a.m. A Walcott Street caller reported a water main break and water in his house. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and assisted the Water Department.

7:03 p.m. A caller reported hearing an animal, possibly a small dog, in distress on Fruit Street.

9:00 a.m. A motorist reported two potholes on Saddle Hill Road. The DPW was notified.

10:20 a.m. A caller reported a catalytic converter was stolen from his work truck on South Street. Officer Matthew Santoro responded and spoke to the employee who discovered it was missing. Officer Santoro checked the cameras of nearby businesses.

3:15 p.m. A caller reported fallen wires on Wood Street. Officer Robert Ekross responded and notified Comcast.

5:58 p.m. A Front Street caller reported someone stole her wallet out of her car, which was in her driveway. The incident was caught on camera. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded and took a report.

February 24

9:55 a.m. A walk-in requested to speak with an officer about evicting a person from his house.

Officer Matthew Santoro assisted.

12:27 p.m. Officers Jay Deiana and Cody Normandin responded along with the Fire Department to a motor vehicle accident involving two cars and airbag deployment. No personal injuries were reported. Officer Deiana provided a courtesy transport for occupants of one of the vehicles.

1:25 p.m. A walk-in reported receiving threatening messages. Officer Matthew Santoro took a report.

3:13 p.m. A caller reported two dogs were going after her dog on Wood Street. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Jay Deiana responded and reunited the dogs with their owner. A message was left for the animal control officer about the incident.

10:30 p.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil attempted to corral a small dog from the middle of the roadway of Main Street. He left a message for the animal control officer.

February 25

10:02 a.m. The DPW reported a tractor-trailer unit was stuck at the closed bridge on Fruit Street.

Officer Cody Normandin responded and reported the truck was gone upon his arrival.

10:12 a.m. A caller reported unemployment fraud. Officer Matthew Santoro spoke with the caller and took a report.

12:23 p.m. Officer Cody Normandin reported low-hanging wires on Saddle Hill Road and notified Verizon.

1:20 p.m. The DPW reported a motor vehicle accident on Wood Street. Officers Cody Normandin and Matthew Santoro responded, took a crash report and searched for the operator. Sergeant William Burchard responded and assisted with the search along with the Milford Police Department’s K-9 unit. Verizon was notified of pole damage.

3:04 p.m. A caller requested to speak with an officer to ask questions regarding a well-being check. Officer Matthew Santoro assisted.

4:20 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle hit his vehicle in a West Main Street parking lot and drove away. Officer Brendon Lyver responded and took a report of a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident.

9:02 a.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil reported discovering a Verizon box with wires open on Elm Street.

1:14 p.m. Start Line Brewing staff complained of next-door neighbors parking in the company’s parking lot. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and the vehicle was removed.

6:43 p.m. Officer Jessica Ferreira assisted a disabled motor vehicle that ran out of gas on West Main Street.

8:53 p.m. Sergeant William Burchard and Officers Brendon Lyver and Jessica Ferreira responded to a report of a vehicle that slid off the roadway of Lumber Street. A tow truck removed the vehicle.

9:30 p.m. An Oliver Lane resident reported receiving a phone alert that an unknown Apple AirTag was in the area. Officer Jessica Ferreira responded and took a report.

11:46 p.m. A motorist reported he was leaving his disabled motor vehicle on a West Main Street parking lot until the morning.

12:36 a.m. Officer Brittany Firth spoke with people in a vehicle on Wood Street and moved them along.

2:20 a.m. Sergeant Arthur Schofield checked on two people on Main Street and subsequently provided them with a courtesy transport to Milford.

11:39 a.m. Officer Jay Deiana responded to a report of an ongoing civil dispute on Hayden Rowe Street.

2:34 p.m. A caller complained of ongoing speeding on Stoney Brook Road. Officer Brendon Lyver spoke with the caller and assisted.

4:16 p.m. A Stoney Brook Road resident complained of vehicles speeding through the neighborhood due to the Fruit Street bridge closure. The caller reported an erratic Jeep on the street and the incident was logged.

9:40 p.m. A Woodview Way caller reported her neighbor’s dog bit her and she wanted the incident logged. The animal control officer was contacted.

February 28

3:29 a.m. A Clinton Street resident complained of loud music in the neighborhood. Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officer Brittany Firth responded and found all quiet in the area.

7:55 a.m. The bus company reported a tree fell down on wires on Winter Street. Officer Cody Normandin responded along with the Fire Department.

8:25 a.m. Officers Brendon Lyver and Cody Normandin responded to a motor vehicle accident involving two cars on Revolutionary Way. No personal injuries were reported.

9:30 a.m. A Pinecrest Village resident reported missionaries came to her door the previous night, and when she asked if they had a permit, they left.

She was concerned that they sought her out, as she did not see them go to other neighbors’ houses. The caller wanted the incident logged.

10:40 a.m. A walk-in from Revolutionary Way reported her vehicle was vandalized. Officer Brendon Lyver spoke with the walk-in and viewed the vehicle.

1:16 p.m. A caller reported malfunctioning traffic lights on Main Street. Officer Moira McGaffigan and the DPW responded and found no problems with the cycling of the lights.

1:26 p.m. A caller reported a tractor-trailer knocked down a wire on Downey Place. Officer Cody Normandin responded and moved the cables out of the roadway and notified Verizon.
