hen he ran for Select Board in 2019, Shahidul Mannan was an unfamiliar name to many in town. He ended up in a tight race for one of the two open seats but finished in fourth place, one vote out of third and 59 behind second. This year’s Annual Town Election on May 16 was a marked difference. With some more familiarity and “connecting with residents more,” Mannan not only won one of the two vacant seats, he was the top vote getter. Even more impressive is he topped an incumbent and a former Select Board member. Mannan finished with 1,435 votes — 65 percent of the 2,214 ballots cast in the election. Incumbent and fellow Democrat Mary Jo LaFreniere — who was the second-place finisher in 2019 — took second with 1,388 votes, with Republican John Coutinho third at 905. “I think I learned a lot from the Election | 8

ccording to founder Ben Schumaker, the goal of the Memory Project is to promote intercultural understanding and kindness between children around the world. Since its establishment in 2004, the youth arts nonprofit organization in Wisconsin has involved 300,000 youth in 55 countries. Members of the National Art Honor Society at Hopkinton High School are among the participants. Christine Enos, co-advisor for the Art Honor Society program, explained that it’s open to students from Grades 9-12 and encourages volunteer work, usually in art, but also in theater arts and dance.
