arents are being asked to change course and have their children take the bus, if possible, to alleviate traffic backups that impacted the opening of school, superintendent Carol Cavanaugh told members of the Hopkinton School Committee at its Sept. 17 meeting. Traffic has been “our number one problem” during the reopening, Cavanaugh said. Parents previously had been asked to consider driving their children to school to allow for enough room on buses for social distancing. As a result, Cavanaugh said, many parents stepped up to “graciously help the district by offering to drive their children to school.” But this well-intentioned decision led to traffic issues. “Now we have the reverse problem,” she noted. Plenty of space remains on buses to still allow social distancing, she said, adding a few days later that about 200 School Committee | 14

hile many businesses have suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hopkinton Chiropractic owner Corey Brunner said he has been very busy the past few months. That perhaps made the Sept. 20 fire at his office location at 17 Main St. even tougher to take. Fortunately for Brunner, the fire was limited to the third floor of the main building. While Hopkinton Chiropractic did suffer some damage, much of the business — as well as all of neighboring Body Restoration — survived because it is located primarily in a one-floor addition that juts out from the back of the main building. There were some issues due to the smoke, but it was far from a total loss. In fact, the businesses were hoping to be back up and running this week, if some plumbing and electrical work could be completed. Body Restoration owner Christine Laughran offered to share some of her space, as Hopkinton Chiropractic lost the use of its patient rooms to damage from smoke, water and falling debris in the main building. Brunner had a tough time watching the fire on Sept. 20, but he was able to put things in perspective a couple of days later, especially after so many friends, neighbors and strangers stepped up to offer assistance.
