t’s 7:30 on a picture-perfect summer morning, and Roger Kabler is sitting on a rock on the edge of Lake Whitehall, savoring all that nature has to offer.

Kabler is an actor and a painter, having discovered his passion for the latter after the former made him feel like he was trapped under the rock, submerged in water, rather than comfortably atop it taking in the wondrous views before him.

After spending many years as an actor in Los Angeles, Roger Kabler said he’s much happier living in Hopkinton while performing his Robin Williams tribute show and painting.

wo years after being shut down by the state, and one year after the town denied a new kennel license, Greyhound Friends took a big step toward reopening its Saddle Hill Road kennel.

Deputy Police Chief Joseph Bennett performed an inspection of the revamped facility, reviewed paperwork — primarily adoption information that in the past had been missing — and submitted a satisfactory report to Town Clerk Connor Degan, who then approved a license.

As of Aug. 15 the group still needed to get inspected and approved by the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture before the state’s cease and desist order could be lifted.

“We’re just looking to resume operations for now and get things back up and running and continue with our education and advocacy for the breed,” Greyhound Friends | 7

Family Fun Day a highlight of fall Blooms, Brews & BBQs also on tap next month

The first day of school for Grades 1-12 in Hopkinton is Wednesday, Aug. 28, with kindergartners starting the following day. Expect to see a lot of new faces, as enrollment in town continues to grow, with the district closing in on 4,000 students. That has school administrators studying options to manage the additional population, as the district seeks to avoid straining its resources while maintaining its stellar reputation. Most recently, Hopkinton was named the No. 2 best school district in the state by the data-analysis website Niche.

Fall is fast approaching, and with it comes a variety of local events that show off the great community feel in this town.

One highlight of the season is Family Fun Day, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14. The event, entering its third year, starts at 3 p.m. with two dozen local organizations — clubs, nonprofits and businesses — setting up activities targeted toward younger kids. Activities include bounce houses, a dunk tank (featuring prominent locals), the annual kids races around the INDEPENDENT track organized by the Girl Scouts, famTHOUGHTS ily scarecrows, and a JERRY SPAR soccer challenge put on by the Knights of Columbus. And there’s the popular basketball free throw competition put on by the Hopkinton Basketball Association (shameless self-promotion).

There also will be local bands performing. Refreshments are available for purchase at food trucks that will be set up in the middle school parking lot. (The rest of the activities are free.)

The woodsman amateur competition is back at Field 12, with residents invited to participate from 3-6 p.m.

The Fire Department is bringing a sideby-side demonstration unit, which is a trailer with two small rooms, one with fire sprinklers and one without. The rooms are set on fire to demonstrate the difference sprinklers can make. That demonstration starts at 4 p.m.

At night, around 8:30, there will be a fireworks show.

The event is organized by the Friends of Hopkinton, who are looking for a few more adult volunteers to help supervise the event (email Ann Click for more information at annclick143@

The Friends of Hopkinton puts on a karaoke night each winter to raise funds for the event, with local businesses chipping in as well so that the event can be free to all attendees.

“Sponsor response has been great so far,” said Click, who noted that no dogs or drones are allowed at the event, and the Center Trail and other trails along the loop road will be closed all day (starting at 8 a.m.) due to them being located within the safety circle that the state fire marshal sets up for the fireworks.

Earlier that same day, the 45th annual Polyarts Festival will be held at the Town Common from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Local artisans will display and sell their crafts, and there will be refreshments, kids activities, music and more.

Like Family Fun Day, Weston Nurseries’ Blooms, Brews & BBQs event started two years ago and quickly has become a popular local tradition.

The Sept. 7 event, which in addition to its titled elements features local bands (South Street Band, Hot Acoustics, The Rationales, F-Tones), is a fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund Walk, for which Weston Nurseries has put together a team for many years.

Tickets are $10 in advance (westonnursuries.com/events) and $15 at the event, which runs from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Vendors include Snappy Dogs, Uhlman’s, PJ’s BBQ, Gotta Q, Chef McFall and Marty’s Fine Wines.

“We’re really excited about this now-annual event because it brings together the town along with a lot of our friends and customers and supports an organization, the Jimmy Fund, that’s really significant,” Weston Nurseries chair Wayne Mezitt said in an appearance before the Select Board on Aug. 13 to get approval for an entertainment license. “Last year we raised about $8,000 from this event for the

ing through as a stand-up comedian, appearing on “The Tonight Show” and “The Arsenio Hall Show,” landing a spot as a cast member on legendary comedienne Carol Burnett’s television variety program, getting a chance to star in his own prime-time sitcom, and serving as a TV advertising spokesman for a huge beverage company.

And he barely survived.

“I got a real taste of Hollywood and what it can do to an artist,” said Kabler, now 57. “I don’t blame anybody. I wanted to be in that business, but I didn’t go my own way. I did what they wanted me to do, and it didn’t work out. A lot of people crash and burn. And so did I.” During that rough patch, Kabler saw his career flounder, his first marriage fall apart and an addiction worsen.

“A lot of people die from drug addition,” he said. “A lot of people in show business die. And I was on my way to doing that. So my sponsor suggested I get out, and I got out for four years, and I just learned something else that I love to do, which is to paint. It’s another form of expression, and I didn’t have to ask anybody if I could do it. So I just went wild and starting painting up a storm. When I first moved to Hopkinton I painted like a madman. I painted 53 paintings in one year just to make the bills.”

Then something happened that threw another curveball Kabler’s way.

Kabler is known for his uncanny ability to imitate celebrities. One such impression is that of Robin Williams.

In 2014, shortly after Kabler moved back to Massachusetts, Williams, battling health issues, committed suicide at his home near San Francisco, three weeks after his 63rd birthday.

Williams’ death affected Kabler profoundly. At first he did not want to revive his impression of the beloved comedian, but eventually Kabler felt a calling to return to the stage. Now Kabler appears in venues across the country with his act in which he pays tribute to Williams and then performs

Then last year Kabler embarked on another venture: a full-length movie inspired by Kabler’s own experiences.

It’s about a man who sees visions of Robin Williams and is compelled to overcome his social phobia and perform as Williams. It’s called “Being Robin,” and the majority of the movie is being filmed in and around Hopkinton.

It’s not lost upon Kabler that his opportunity to helm his own movie — in addition to lead actor he serves as writer, director, producer and more — is happening far, far away from Tinseltown, some five years after he orchestrated his escape.

“I’m sitting on the rock right now that I landed on in Lake Whitehall,” he said. “This is where I want to live the rest of my life. The sky is blue. I can swim and I can heal from all those years of insanity. I came here to paint and to heal, and I end up doing more acting than I’ve ever done in my life. It wasn’t my plan to do this.”

Act I: From Metrowest to Hollywood Kabler grew up in Framingham and was exposed to theater and entertainment by his parents. At an early age he took to impressions, like Richard Nixon and Columbo.

“And then when I saw Robin Williams when I was 17 I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s me.’ I realized I had a real connection,” he recalled. “That was a big part of it. Then I was just entertaining kids at parties, and I started doing standup at 18 in Boston.”

After doing some acting locally, Kabler found his way to New York City

at age 20 to learn more about the craft.

He recalled doing a play with famous playwright Robert Patrick but called the experience “tortuous.” After 10 years in the Big Apple, Kabler decided to change gears.

“That’s when I went into standup in 1985, and it went real fast,” he said. “I did an act about an impressionist who loses his mind, gets lost in all his characters. Then I got started doing TV work.”

Kabler was a cast member on a CBS revival of “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1991. The show was short-lived, but Kabler cherished his brief opportunity to work alongside a legend.

“It was an incredible experience to work with her,” he said. “Oh my god, it’s comedy school. She was just a blast.”

Next came a starring role on “Rhythm & Blues,” an NBC sitcom about a white man (Kabler) who is mistakenly hired as a DJ at an all-black Detroit radio station. It aired in the fall of 1992, in a prime spot on Thursday nights between “A Different World” and “Cheers.”

After five weeks of poor ratings, the plug was pulled. Kabler said a key reason was due to the “power elites in Hollywood” who had control of him and the show.

“It started out great, but different elements kind of took it down fast,” he said. “I tried to improvise on that show and they were like, ‘Uh-uh-uh.’ As funny as it was, and the audience would

go crazy, they’re like, ‘We need to stay with the script.’ ” So Kabler was off to his next job, as spokesman for Zima, a malt beverage introduced by Coors Brewing Company in 1993. Kabler did a number of commercials as a smooth-talking, hat-wearing, hipster character in the mid-1990s.

Then his career, and his well-being, took a downturn.

Act II: Back from the brink Kabler tried to hang on to his acting dream in the late 1990s, but not much notable came out of it — a few TV series guest appearances, some voiceover work. In the meantime he was struggling with addiction, and it was taking its toll on his physical and mental health.

“I stopped [acting] entirely for four years, getting sober and stuff,” he recalled. “My sponsor said, ‘Just get out,’ because every time I tried to go back to it it’s triggered by that intense need to get back into it. In the meantime, my first marriage ended.”

In 2002 Kabler starred in a lowbudget independent movie called “Who the Hell is Bobby Roos?” about an impressionist who loses control of his identity. “I was in a very raw place when I shot it,” said Kabler, who scripted the story, although the scenes were primarily improvised.

The film generated some positive reviews and won an award at the Seattle International Film Festival, but it did not have the financial backing so it was never released in theaters.

Kabler turned to painting in 2004 and found it cathartic. Moving away from acting, he eventually he came to the conclusion that he needed to leave Southern California.

“I was in a second marriage, it didn’t work out, I realized I needed to come home and start over,” said Kabler, who has a 26-year-old son from his first marriage. “So I got a van and I put everything I had into it and I started across

He ended up in an old building on Wood Street, the former Wheeler’s General Store, big enough to serve as his studio and with picturesque views of Lake Whitehall.

It was ideal — completely different than what he had been experiencing in Los Angeles.

Looking back, Kabler, who says he’s been sober now for 16 years, advises anyone heading for the bright lights to make sure they have other options.

“My message to anybody that wants to be in it is don’t cling to it too tightly,” he said. “Have something else to do.

Because it can take you down. If it’s your big dream and it doesn’t happen or it goes bad, you need to be able to land on something else and somebody else.

And if you’re in trouble, get out until you can be in it. That was my big lesson.

Because now I’m working more than I ever worked, and I’m having a blast on my own terms. I don’t need Hollywood to tell me what to do.”

‘Being Robin’ seeks community support

I

nterested in appearing in a movie? Roger Kabler wants to know.

Part of his film, “Being Robin,” is set to include scenes from Kabler performing his Robin Williams tribute show.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Kabler has booked Regent Theatre in Arlington.

“We’re actually shooting a concert,” Kabler said.

“If people in this area want to go, they can go to this concert that I’m doing, the live Robin Williams tribute, and they can sit in the audience and be in the film.”

Not available that night? Kabler is offering other ways to be involved in his production, via donations at his GoFundMe page (gofundme.com/ being-robin). There he explains how donors will be thanked in the credits at the end of the film and receive other goodies.

Act III: ‘Being Robin’ is born After Robin Williams’ death in August 2014, Kabler initially declined suggestions that he return to the stage.

Said Kabler: “People asked me, ‘Are you going to do a tribute?’ And I said, ‘No, absolutely not, I’m a painter now.’ And then I just felt Robin go [in Williams’ voice], ‘Hey, come on, let’s go back to work, OK, let’s go.’ And I’m like, ‘Ohhhhhh, man.’ I finally called the guy who does the bookings and I said, ‘Yeah, I guess I’m going to do a tribute.’ And the next thing I know I’m in California doing a casino in front of 600 people. That was our first show.”

Kabler’s show is a success, he says, in part because he doesn’t imitate Robin Williams so much as channel his energy.

And Robin Williams had a lot of energy.

“It is exhausting,” Kabler said. “It’s an athletic event for 45 minutes. But it’s also a mental struggle, because I’m not the genius. I’m just trying to align my thinking so that I’m available. I leave myself open. And I really remember Robin saying [in Williams’ voice], ‘Listen, you’ve got to get out of the way, OK? I’ve got this.’ I’ve just got to get out of the way and let him go through.

Whatever my perception of him is, I’ve just got to let him work through and do whatever he’s going to do in the show.

“And that’s also the fun of the film.

I don’t really know what’s going to happen when the cameras are rolling, because I invite Robin to play. And that’s a real spiritual manifestation.”

Kabler took lessons from his first movie, which he said “cost nothing to make,” and had a very clear vision for this film.

“This one I’ve got a full crew, it’s very expensive, and I’ve got a script that

I’ve written on my phone,” he said. “It’s much more of a real production, but it’s also not a Hollywood production. It’s a Hollywoodville production.”

While Kabler is at the helm of the project, he does have help.

Kevin Baldwin, a playwright and theater critic, has been assisting with the screenplay. The filming is being handled by a Rockland-based production company called Hop Top Films, led by cinematographer Evan Schneider and assistant director/production manager Paul Taft.

Actors include some professionals but mostly amateurs, including friends and neighbors (plus a three-legged dog named Sammy). Kabler’s co-star is Alainna Rodgers, his love interest in the movie as well as real life.

Rodgers was studying to be a cardiovascular invasive specialist and doing some community theater in Florida when she saw Kabler’s act, got to know

him and eventually decided to head north to Hopkinton.

Of Kabler she says: “He cares so much about the relationships in his life.

He has friends from when he was in preschool. That’s integrity. And that’s one of the other things about this project and why I’m here. There’s lot of integrity in this project.”

Act IV: ‘Compelled to tell this story’ Kabler, who never met Williams, said he has communicated with Williams’ family to make sure they know he’s not exploiting him. According to him, they aren’t concerned.

“I’m not getting rich off Robin,” Kabler said. “Robin’s using me, by the way. I feel like I’m not using him, he’s using me. I’m a vessel for him.

“One of the reasons I’m making this film is to get some answers. Like, what is going on? Why am I completely throwing my beautiful, peaceful life as a painter aside for three years of running around the country? In three weeks I went from LA to New York to Phoenix and then did a show at the Rod and Gun Club in Woodville. It’s exhausting, man.

But I’m compelled to tell this story.”

After five days of filming in July and four days in August, Kabler said the movie will be one-third complete, at which point he will take a break from filming, edit scenes together and try to raise more money.

“Once we brought the trailer up people started throwing money at the movie,” Kabler said. “But they need to see some edited scenes for some real investing. That’s how it works.

“That’s instead of going to Hollywood and going, ‘Hey, buy my movie.’

Because they would take this thing and turn it upside down like they did to the rest of my career, and I’m not letting that happen. … This is a homemade movie but it’s also very, very rich in character and emotion and humor. There’s a tremendous amount of love and spirit in it. I don’t need a lot of fancy effects.”

By design, the movie’s premise will have the audience somewhat confused, something not typical of a mainstream movie.

“This is about a man who feels that he may be touched by this incredible comic genius or that he is being plagued by psychiatric issues,” Kabler said. “You don’t know if this is a real manifestation of Robin Williams or if this is a guy who is crazy. Either way, his motivation is to do something healing for this man everybody adored by continuing with his work or by giving his audience something that he feels can help heal. So it’s a very funny movie but it’s also creepy.”

Added Baldwin, the co-writer: “It’s an esoteric film. There’s going to be certain elements that some people may not get right away. It may require a couple of viewings. However, those opposed to the kennel due to past mismanagement and alleged failure to properly treat dogs in its care were working on a petition that would lead to a public hearing and, they hope, a decision by the Select Board to revoke the license.

The updated facility can house 15 greyhounds in redesigned, enlarged kennels. That’s fewer than half as many dogs that had been held at the facility in the past, when it was criticized for overcrowding, inadequate housing and overall poor conditions.

While the premises now are in acceptable physical condition, it is the personnel that has protesters upset.

Longtime executive director Louise Coleman, who was fired by the Greyhound Friends Board of Directors in 2017, no longer has a role at the kennel.

She is barred from returning as per a governance agreement with the attorney general’s office. The board — which admitted to mismanagement and lack of proper oversight in the same governance agreement — has turned over as well, with Caryn-Amy Rose now serving as president. But there are people involved who were there when Coleman misappropriated funds for personal use and failed to maintain a sanitary environment that led to the kennel’s forced closing.

Shepard, for one, has worked at the facility for many years, which she and the board view as a positive.

“I’ve worked in all facets of the kennel,” she said. “I was a volunteer, I worked with the dogs, I’m a certified dog trainer, I worked with the volunteers, I’ve done it all. So I know the ins and outs of the whole process.”

That’s a red flag to someone like Beth Gallagher Malloy, a Hopkinton resident who was organizing a petition (25 resident signatures are required) that she said was to be delivered to the town clerk’s office on Aug. 19, forcing a

public hearing before the Select Board.

Last fall, at a hearing regarding the kennel’s initial attempt to regain its license, some members of the Select Board suggested the Greyhound Friends Board of Directors needed a complete turnover in order to receive support from the town.

Malloy insists that no one who worked at the kennel under Coleman and failed to act should be allowed to return.

“It’s not new blood, it just isn’t,” Malloy said. “A lot of the people that are there, including Teri Shepard, knew what was going on and looked the other way. She did. She knew that Louise was taking money.

“I’d like to see Teri Shepard especially go. She has no right being there, in my opinion.”

Shepard said she hopes to move forward and keep the focus on helping the animals, acknowledging that opposition has made it challenging.

“I don’t believe it is possible to appease them,” she said. “There are certain people that just won’t hear it. They just

keep going to the past. We can’t correct the past, we can only apologize for what had taken place. I can say all of the dogs are accounted for, that was just a paperwork issue. We have a new record-keeping system that’s all digital, so those issues will not happen again.

But the people that you’re speaking of, I can’t seem to appease them.

“Greyhound Friends has a huge community of supporters,” Shepard continued. “That’s what keeps us going. There are a lot of people who really believe in the mission of placing greyhounds into forever homes. So we

decided that returning to that original mission and sticking with it, their support would still be there. And we all believe in it. There’s always going to be a need for these dogs. That’s where our passion is and we want to move forward with the mission. We have this beautiful facility that was purpose-built for greyhounds, and we don’t want to let it go.”

Malloy, however, said it’s time for a fresh start — with fresh faces.

“I would be happy if a rescue moved in there,” she said. “I just don’t think this is the right rescue. And there are a lot of people in this town that are dead set against them reopening because of their history. Do they deserve another chance? No, they really don’t.

“I don’t see them as having a future here in Hopkinton.”

Select Board backs Futures Act to encourage cooperation from Eversource

“I am recommending that the board endorse and approve a resolution in support of the Futures Act bill,” he said, adding: “I firmly believe if this bill becomes a law, we will have more tools in our toolbox to handle some of the issues we are dealing with relative to LNG.” The board unanimously voted to approve the resolution supporting passage of the Futures Act bill.

Brabham new police officer

DPW advises against accepting Legacy Farms road At its July 22 meeting, the Planning Board entertained a suggestion that would encourage the town to accept Legacy Farms Road North as a public road with conditions, with the goal of eliminating traffic and safety issues related to school bus pickup and drop-off.

DPW director John Westerling appeared at the Aug. 14 Planning Board meeting and expressed his concerns with taking the road while the development remains a work in progress.

“That is a highly unusual suggestion,” Westerling said. “My initial reaction is that it would not be in the best interests of the town. There are too many elements of the construction that have yet to be completed. Through that construction process and through the completion of those elements many other elements can arise that we may not be able to anticipate right now,

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts honored The Select Board honored a handful of local teenagers for their accomplishments as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts honored were Emma Bograd, for her analysis of fearful dog aggression and socialization, specifically how it would relate to the planned dog park in Hopkinton, and Mallory Peishoff, for her work helping senior citizens attend and be recognized at the Hopkinton High School pops concert in the spring.

“We don’t see a lot of kindness and leadership brought together in our world these days for whatever reason,” Select Board member Brian Herr commented to the girls. “When you bring kindness and leadership together, I think you can move mountains. So that’s really cool what you did, and very thoughtful and very impactful.”

Boy Scouts recognized were Patrick Barnes, Jack Riley and Ethan Kramer. For their Eagle Scout project, Barnes and Riley developed a twoperson soapbox derby car for “an ablebodied driver to share with someone with autism or anyone who can’t race on their own,” Barnes explained, noting the project took more than a year to finish.

“This project is awesome and it’s wowed all of us,” Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone said.

Kramer built picnic tables for the Michael Carter Lisnow Respite Center and cleaned and repainted a slide at the facility.

“You did a fantastic job,” Select Board member Irfan Nasrullah said.

“You identified a need and you went out and did something about it.”

The Town of Hopkinton is reminding seniors that the application deadline for a newly approved tax relief program tied to the state “circuit breaker” tax benefit is Aug. 31.

A home rule petition to the legislature was enacted into law in 2018 allowing Hopkinton to offer property tax relief to seniors who meet state circuit breaker requirements, and the Select Board may make tax reduction awards of between $550 and $2,200 per household, after the Board of Assessors determines the number of qualified applicants.

Cases of EEE confirmed near Hopkinton The Hopkinton Heatlh Department announced earlier this month that Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was confirmed in mammal-biting mosquitos in Hopkinton and surrounding communities. As such, the Health Department recommended residents wear insect repellent and protective clothing and reduce time outside in the evening and overnight hours. Additionally, the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project was authorized to treat the affected neighborhoods with spraying.

Young Hopkinton DJ gets positive spin Auslander releases first single Hopkinton’s Stephen Auslander, now a rising junior at the University of Miami, has been DJ’ing since his sophomore year at Hopkinton High School.

ith one song newly released and another on the way, DJ Stephen Auslander, who goes by the moniker “SAUS,” has a bright future in music, a future that began right in his own hometown of Hopkinton.

“There is something about music that I have always been drawn to,” said Auslander. “[Hopkinton Public Schools Music Department leader Craig Hay] was my teacher from the time I was in fifth grade until I graduated, and I always looked forward to going to his class. I loved that feeling you get when you are performing music.”

The 2017 Hopkinton High School graduate played trombone for years in the concert band and jazz ensemble and helped start HHS’s basketball pep band.

While performing music was always a passion for Auslander, he also loved to listen to music and learned to put his own spin on it to create a new sound.

“I got my first gig when I was a sophomore in high school,” he said about starting his DJ’ing venture. That one friend-of-a-friend’s birthday party turned into DJ’ing different events such as parties, graduations and bar mitzvahs throughout high school and into college.

When Auslander got to the University of Miami, where he is entering his junior year in the Frost School of Music studying music production and music business, he kept his DJ’ing going and

now scratches tunes at an on-campus bar on Friday nights and at local dance clubs in Miami.

“Being a DJ in clubs is still a way for me to perform, but it is a lot different then watching me play trombone with the rest of my band,” he said with a laugh.

The young artist, the son of David and Lynne Auslander, on July 19 released his first single, “No One Else,” a song for which he wrote the

instrumental music and collaborated on the lyrics with University of Miami classmate Haley Fishberger. The single can be heard on his Twitter page (twitter.com/sausofficial) as well as all major music streaming platforms such as SoundCloud.

His second single, “You,” which is due out Aug. 28, was inspired by Auslander’s trip to Amsterdam to study with industry professionals during a producer coaching program.

“It was so cool to be able to be there where some of my favorite artists have recorded before,” he said about recording the track at the prestigious Stmpd Rcrds studios in Amsterdam.

“You” follows the musical styling of “No One Else” as electronic dance music, but is a beat that is closer to his heart.

“I am really excited to release this one. I have never been prouder of a song,” he said.

Project Just Because continues kindness after 21 years

If you ask what the biggest gratification of my job is, it’s to know that I could connect a child in our community — or anybody that we serve — with some basic food or needs.

P

roject Just Because has played the part of Good Samaritan for 21 years and counting, extending a variety of free resources and services to those in need throughout the state of Massachusetts.

From a biweekly food pantry to a book-distribution program to a support system for domestic abuse victims, the nonprofit strives to help all those who make requests on its website.

While Hopkinton is a thriving community, with household income on a steady rise over the past few decades as developments have popped up all over town, there remains a need for the services PJB provides.

“It doesn’t matter what a town looks like,” operations manager Collete Cronin said. “There are people struggling, and there are many reasons they could be struggling. We had somebody who had to go through an operation and couldn’t work, and did not know how he would have fed himself during the time he was not working if he wasn’t able to use our food pantry.”

Cronin keeps inventory of the nonprofit’s supplies and also manages the programs the group runs throughout the year. She joined PJB more than three years ago so she could “be of help to all the people struggling” in Hopkinton.

“It’s being able to give somebody something that they are in need of and especially are not able to find or get anywhere else,” she said. “Just the joy and thankfulness that they show — even sometimes if it’s a small item, it makes a big difference to them.”

Cronin and PJB president Cherylann Walsh recalled social encounters with families in need that have inspired their work and given their charity a feeling of purpose.

Late August of last year, Walsh met a little girl and her mother who arrived at the PJB building at 109 South St. in need of food for the girl. The family was new to town, directed to PJB by another family that had used the charity’s food pantry.

“It happened to be me there that day and I walked into our place,” Walsh said. “This little girl just really loved bagels, and it just happened that we’re getting bagels and muffins now yearround. So I opened the refrigerator and I had a couple kinds in bags for her to pick. She took those bagels and she just hugged them.

“If you ask what the biggest gratification of my job is, it’s to know that I could connect a child in our community — or anybody that we serve — with some basic food or needs.”

The PJB food pantry operates twice a month as the only Hopkintonexclusive program. Originally only able to provide non-perishable dry goods, the pantry expanded last year to frozen and refrigerated items through a town grant.

PJB also now has access to glutenfree foods.

“That has been big,” Cronin said.

“Gluten-free food can be three to four times as expensive as food that’s not gluten-free. So people that are struggling but need this food have a hard time.

PJB has been adding breadth and functionality to its existing programs each year, thanks to the people who donate funds and physical resources.

school supplies after Walsh learned the family had not made it into the charity’s back-to-school supply program.

Back-to-school for fall 2019 began last month. Interested parents still have time to request backpacks by filling out an online form. They then receive a time to pick up their supplies. PJB also accepts back-to-school donations of all kinds of school supplies, which ensures it has enough for everyone to make it through the school year.

Cronin remembered a mother of a deaf child who approached the organization in need of a gift for that child’s upcoming birthday. PJB’s birthday program provides cake and presents to those who cannot afford them.

“We had gotten a gift for her, and when [the mother] looked at it she almost started crying,” Cronin recalled.

“It had something to do with monkeys … and that was [the girl’s] favorite thing

YMCA moves ahead with Ashland facility T

he YMCA continued to push forward with plans to build a new facility in Ashland that will serve Hopkinton and Holliston as well. The location is 12.5 acres on the access road next to Ashland Middle School that leads to the commuter rail station.

The land is being donated by BUSINESS Bob Gayner, who BRIEFS said his family were members of the YMCA in Framingham.

“This site in the Ashland Rail Transit District couldn’t be more perfect for locating a new regional

YMCA,” Gayner said in a statement when the projects was announced earlier this year. “It has easy access to Hopkinton, Holliston, and Framingham from Routes 9, 135, 495, the MassPike, and the MBTA Commuter Rail Station.”

While the organization is seeking more community input before finalizing plans, the new YMCA is expected to have far more indoor amenities than the Y in Hopkinton, which is mainly an outdoors-based facility.

The new facility is designated to serve residents of Hopkinton, Ashland and Holliston.

Hildreth receives CFO honor Hopkinton resident Michael Hildreth recently was named one of the Boston Business Journal’s Chief Financial Officers of the Year, in the midsize private company category. former Vice President Al Gore.

The program brings together activists, cultural leaders, organizers, scientists and storytellers committed to building a sustainable future. The training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to share facts about Earth’s climate crisis and provide insight into actions necessary to impact the future of our shared home. To date, more than 20,000 individuals have been designated Climate Reality Leaders, representing more than 150 countries and ranging in age from 12 to 87.

Richardson, long passionate about sustainability, found the training and the presentations featuring Gore to be powerful and inspiring. As a newly minted Climate Reality Leader, Richardson plans to work with local, state and federal officials as well as business and industry leaders and nonprofit organizations to better inform the discussions, actions and legislation around the global climate emergency.

“I am newly energized to assist what is being done worldwide to combat the climate crisis and I do believe that working together we can solve this problem to ensure a better world for our children’s children!” he said.

He is available to present to community forums, youth groups or any interested parties.

The organization relies on the gift of giving back to the community, with Walsh noting those who have donated to PJB in its 20-plus years do not always see the impact of their contributions.

“I don’t think people sometimes realize,” Walsh said. “It may just be a water bottle, it may just be a backpack, but it is something to someone that goes directly to [those in need] and it’s a gift.

So I’m very appreciative, because without us all working together this thing would have never taken off nor would we be able to continue it.”

wo former Hopkinton High School graduates want you to take a deep breath and relax.

Because this is sometimes easier said than done, the two young men have developed a new, unique meditation app to help you relieve stress, fall asleep fast and focus on the art of mindfulness.

Himanshu Minocha and Avi Arora are the two developers of Bluezen, a meditation app that is aimed at “making meditation more beginner friendly using unique technology.” That technology is called 8D audio. The idea behind 8D audio is to make a meditation sound as if it is originating from a point in space.

As the user meditates, this point moves around them, giving them a specific and clear object upon which to to focus. The app also includes custom guided meditations, sleep radio and a seven-breath feature, with intuitive graphics to aid the user with controlling their breathing, “for people looking to quickly find their center and relax.”

“This is an app that will help everyone — from beginners to those used to meditating,” said Minocha. “It gives you something to focus on that is not just your own thoughts.”

Minocha and Arora, who are rising sophomores at the University of Illinois and Georgia Tech, respectively, wanted to develop an app that provided easy and accessible ways to solve a problem that is plaguing society today.

“We knew that a lot of people are struggling with mental health issues, and

we wanted to find a way to help people dealing with anxiety through mindfulness and relaxation,” said Arora. “We saw the benefits that being more in control of what you think has on anxiety.”

The user-friendly app includes guided meditations, which are newly added every week, spanning topics such

as sleep, focus, financial abundance and music of nature. Although the app is free to download, to enable all of the features there is a $4.99 monthly fee.

“There are a lot of niche apps out there that you have to pay for — ones that are for meditation, ones to help you sleep, etc.,” said Minocha. “Bluezen has the capacity to do all of these things for one low price.”

The app already has received high marks from more than 4,000 users, with a 4.8 out of 5 on the app store since it was first launched in late July.

Before its launch in late July, the two men had been working on developing Bluezen since December 2018.

And although it is the first app that they have created together, this is not the first app that the young men have developed alone. Both Minocha and Arora have published a number of apps in the past, one of which — a web browser app created by Minocha — has more than 200,000 downloads.

But it is with Bluezen that the two have realized that they can provide a meaningful way for people to focus on mindfulness in a way that is different from other meditation apps.

“We have made meditation more accessible and less scary for people,” said Arora.

Being a young boy, Syed said he got mad and frustrated and started to retaliate with name-calling of his own.

“There was one problem, though — that everyone else has the most typical name you could think of,” he said.

The teasing on both sides went on for a while, until April 15, 2013 — the day of the Boston Marathon bombings.

“I went back to school expecting the same teasing, but no one called me those names,” he said. “I got awkward glances, and kids were keeping their distance.”

Syed said that the break in the teasing gave him time to reflect on his name, which in Arabic means “the difference between good and bad.”

What’s in a name?

A young man from Hopkinton is sharing his journey in discovering how a name can be a lesson in tolerance and acceptance.

Furquaan Syed, a Hopkinton High School senior, was one of the featured storytellers on World Channel’s “Stories from the Stage,” a series of diverse stories reflecting the diversity of modern America.

Although his first name is a very common name among Muslims around the world, Syed, who was born in Massachusetts, said he was teased as a child for how different it was from typical American names.

“Growing up, while I was surrounded by people named Sean and John, I was the only Furquaan,” he told the live audience during the “Stories from the Stage” program.

Syed said that he was teased as a child for his name, with kids changing it to hurtful nicknames.

“I hated lunch the most; that is when it would happen a lot,” he said, referring to when he was an elementary and middle school student

“The good thing was for a month people didn’t pick on me because of my name; the bad thing was people didn’t pick on me because on my name,” he said. “People didn’t see me for me, they saw me for my Muslim identity and for my Arabic name.”

In the past five years, although the namecalling has decreased, Syed said that he still wishes people would see past the exterior and focus on what is really important.

“For the most part, people see past my brown skin and my foreign name and see me for who I am,” he said. “I just want people to see we are not so different after all.”

Now when someone teases him about his name, he doesn’t get mad or upset at all, he said.

“Hey, that’s me, I say,” Syed said at the end of his monologue.

Syed was asked to take part in “Stories from the Stage,” which first aired in 2017, after he spoke about his struggles at his mosque in Framingham.

“They asked me to speak about my experience as a first-generation immigrant,” he recalled.

Syed agreed, hoping to help spread awareness about the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

“There is a stigma around Muslim groups,” he said. “I wanted to talk about it.”

Sports Softball field project keeps Anderson’s ‘sparkle’ alive

hose who knew Lauren Anderson said she had a certain “sparkle” about her. It was an energy that made her so memorable to her friends, Hopkinton High School classmates and teammates that dozens of them have jumped in to spread the word and raise money for a project seeking to spruce up a field bearing her name on the 25th anniversary of her passing.

“I was flabbergasted,” said Riki Anderson Rubin, Lauren’s mother. “The fact that it has been 25 years and so many people are coming forward and remembering her is wonderful.”

Rubin admitted the outpouring caught her by surprise.

“She was my daughter and she was wonderful,” Rubin said. “I just didn’t know everyone else felt the same way.”

Anderson died in 1994 in a horseback riding accident. An HHS student at the time, she was active in equestrian, skiing, softball and cheerleading, as well as being a loving daughter, sister and friend. Her family lived in a tightknit neighborhood in town, and Rubin remembers Kathy Kilduff walking over to her home that night.

“She said, ‘We lost a sparkle,’ and it just seems to be to be perfect for her, a perfect name, because that’s what she

was,” Rubin said. “She got along with everybody, even her sisters, and she just sparkled.”

The word stuck. It’s engraved on Anderson’s headstone and on the Lauren Anderson Memorial Scholarship that Rubin gives out to a Hopkinton student each year.

The scoreboard at Field 6 behind the high school, a softball field, was named in Anderson’s memory. Over the years,

however, the quality and upkeep of the field fell behind its neighbors at the school. That’s what led that same group of former neighbors, most of whom have since moved out of Hopkinton, to take action.

“Our two goals are to honor Lauren on the 25th anniversary of her passing and to upgrade the field to match the quality of the other athletic fields at HHS,” Kilduff said. “Softball was a sport she loved, so we feel it’s a wonderful way to honor her and do something within the community.”

So Kilduff and several others took to social media and spread the word to local residents and people who were in Anderson’s life back in 1994. The response was immediate and, Kilduff said, “overwhelming.” The project raised $8,000 in its first week.

“Every single person we reached out to remembered Lauren, every single person remembered her positive attitude, her spirit, her sparkle,” Kilduff said. “It’s heartwarming to see the legacy Lauren left is still alive 25 years later.”

The fundraising blitz will wrap up by mid-September, Kilduff said, and the goal is $40,000. By the time it’s over, the plan is for the field bearing Anderson’s name to have a new scoreboard, bleachers, dugouts, landscaping around the field and a warning track. Supporters

can donate through an online PayPal account, through Facebook and by checks payable to the Hopkinton Boosters, who are helping collect money.

Marie Eldridge, another former neighbor who is helping to organize the project, said people have stepped forward to volunteer their labor and time in addition to supporting the project financially.

“Everybody grabbed a job and off we went,” Eldridge said. “The response has been amazing for such a short amount of time. A lot of her peers are getting on the bandwagon, either through making a donation or offering to do something.”

Rubin admitted it was difficult for her to go to the field and see the scoreboard, in part because of the memory of her daughter but also because the field itself was not up to snuff compared to the others. She said it was difficult for her to follow up on improving the field herself, but she is grateful for the efforts of that same dedicated group of neighbors who stepped up 25 years ago as Rubin dealt with the pain of losing her daughter, and who are still determined to make sure Lauren’s sparkle never dies.

“I can’t believe it’s been 25 years,” Rubin said. “She was just a girl going about the business of her life and enjoying every minute of it. She was just a wonderful kid.”

Sports HHS grad Mills to lead college field hockey program

H

opkinton native and former Hillers field hockey standout Tamara Mills has been tapped to become the next head coach of the Sage Colleges field hockey team, and she is looking to build the program in Albany, New York, into a competitor.

“I’m wicked excited and feel grateful for this opportunity,” Mills said. “To be able to grow a program has always been a goal of mine. On top of that being a couple hours from home is priceless to me, especially since I have been away since college.”

Mills was a four-year varsity starter at Hopkinton High School, helping the team to the 2008 state championship and four Tri-Valley League titles during her career. Mills was a three time TVL All-Star and earned team captain and MVP recognition during her time with the Hillers.

Mills went on to Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, winning 70 games and advancing to a pair of sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Division 3 tournament. A midfielder, she scored 31 career points and had three game-winning goals in her 63 collegiate games. Before landing at Sage, Mills spent time as an assistant coach at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.

In the short term, Mills said she wants to get to know her team, which completed its first season last fall.

Ultimately, she wants to build Sage into a competitive team, both within the Empire 8 Conference and in Tamara Mills was recently named head field hockey Division 3. She also coach at Sage Colleges. wants to make an impact on her players off the field.

“I hope to encourage young women to pursue their dreams by fostering an atmosphere where they become the best versions of themselves,” Mills said.

“I hope my positive energy, drive and competitiveness will bring the potential out of Sage.”

Mills describes herself as a “student-athlete oriented” coach and “more of a cheerleader than a yeller.” That said, she does set a high bar of expectation for herself and her players.

“I like things to be done well and in the right way, so I do have high standards and expectations,” she said.

In addition to coaching, Mills has been active in the athletic departments in which she has worked. She worked with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at DePauw and helped oversee and develop the school’s strength and conditioning programs. As a graduate student at McDaniel College, she served as the field hockey team’s interim head coach and earned a master’s in kinesiology.

She said her love of athletics was forged even before she donned a Hopkinton High uniform. Mills was 7 years old and waiting for her brother to get out of football practice when she saw the HHS athletic director and her mother explained to her what an AD does.

“According to legend I responded with, ‘You mean he gets paid to organize sports?’” Mills said. “Since then I realized my passion for athletics could also be a career.”

Though just beginning, that career has already taken a number of twists and turns, as is common in the world of college sports. Mills said her family has been with her through every step, including the latest one that brings her closer to home.

“My family has always been my number one fans,” she said. “They were always on the 50-yard line when I was competing and that has not changed. In a profession where things change on a dime regularly, I have come to appreciate their constant support even more. Nothing beats having my family on the 50.”

Sports Hopkinton Running Club keeps pace Group has competitive side but also community focused

H

urricane or heat wave, freezing or fair, members of the Hopkinton Running Club have trekked through the elements every Saturday for the past 16 years, since the HRC’s founding in 2003.

While it is a club with many serious runners, the HRC also represents community building, a plethora of worthy causes and a welcoming atmosphere for runners of various abilities and experience.

HRC members proudly lay claim to having helped raise an enormous amount of funds for numerous causes, usually via races in town and sometimes at larger regional or national events as well.

“Michelle Kinsella raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Semper Fi Fund,” HRC president Jill Shugart said. “Some of these people that run for the Boston Marathon, for example, you have to raise anywhere between ($5,000) to $10,000 for charity to run it and so many of these members do it year after year and raise all this money for these great causes.”

One race in particular, the Sharon Timlin Memorial Event, highlights the efforts of the HRC, as many members are on the organizing committee and have helped raise well over $1 million for ALS research since the race’s inception in 2004.

“I think [starting the scholarship program] was one of the most special moments for us,” McKenzie said.

The club has about 250 members hailing from Hopkinton and neighboring towns.

“We have a lot of people from Milford, Westborough, Southborough, Marlborough — all over,” Shugart said.

For anyone skeptical of joining the HRC, the current president notes she was apprehensive when she first joined.

“I was very nervous to join the club because I did not think I was a great runner,” Shugart said. “I didn’t go super fast and I wasn’t running marathons back then. So I was very intimidated to actually start running with the club. Then I went to a few of the Saturday morning runs and I met all these different people who are running at all different kinds of

paces. It was so welcoming that I just really loved it and joined.”

Added member Carly Grant: “Everyone just has their own individual goals, and for some people it’s just to have a more active life. … We’re a really supportive club. We support runners of all levels and we’re really friendly. We’re always welcoming new members. We just really like to stay fit and feel good.”

The Hopkinton Running Club meets every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Town Common except for occasional hosted runs when members provide breakfast at their homes. To join, someone simply has to show up. Members help newcomers find fellow runners who go at their pace. Some HRC members also set up outside runs via the club’s Facebook page.

Shugart gives a simple but important reason for joining the HRC. “I just always come back from a run happier than when I left,” she said.

Instructor Rebecca Tredeau leads the world’s first class jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping playing of the drums.

Bike Rides

The Senior Center is introducing a series of easy 15-mile bike rides back and forth on the Upper Charles Trail in

Milford intended for those looking for a more casual ride or just getting back into cycling. All who have cycling experience are welcome. The group will meet at the trail parking lot just over the Hopkinton border in Milford, on the northbound side of Route 85. The bike route is essentially flat, with a few short hills. Riders should have a bike in working order with tires inflated and a helmet (required) and be able to maintain 10 mph on the flats, as the ride leader will keep the group together. The leader is Eli Post, a Hopkinton resident who has extensive experience organizing and leading rides. Email Eli at elipost@ comcast.net with questions. Historical Hike: Hopkinton Springs

Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1 p.m.

About 200 years ago there was a “big blow,” also known as a hurricane, in Hopkinton. So many trees came down that Joel Norcross found three springs on his land: a magnesia spring, an iron spring and a sulfur spring. Knowing their health benefits, he advertised them and built a hotel to accommodate his

guests. This hike will visit the remains of these structures and view historical plaques that were put up several years ago as an Eagle Scout project. The Historical Society will organize this guided hike, departing the Senior Center at 1 p.m.. Note that the walk involves a steep hill walking down and back and no real places to sit.

Volunteer at Senior Center

Many volunteer opportunities are available at the Senior Center, in particular prep cooks who assist the cook in preparing salads and sandwiches for daily lunch. There also is a need for lunch waitstaff, computer room tutors and greenhouse workers. Volunteers have the choice to help once a month, every week or every day. Senior Solutions Guidebook

The town has prepared a new Senior Solutions Guidebook for seniors, veterans and their families on the tax relief programs that are available through the Town of Hopkinton. It also contains information on the new means-tested senior exemption that is available this year for the first time. This guidebook is available at the Senior Center and will soon be available online. Anyone with questions about the various exemptions available to residents should call Stuart at the Assessor’s Office at 508-497-9720.

1:59 p.m. A walk-in, Henderson Olmos, 20, of 203 Belleville Ave., New Bedford, turned himself in on a warrant.

12:16 a.m. Officer Ryan Polselli and Sergeant William Burchard conducted a motor vehicle stop on East Main Street and subsequently arrested Jonas T. Souza, 19, of 77 Ardmore Road, Framingham, and charged him with OUI drugs, speeding in violation special regulation, and OUI liquor.

3:29 p.m. The Attleboro Police Department requested a well-being check of an Attleboro resident who left 10 days earlier with a male party whose car is registered to a Lakeshore Drive address. Officers Brian Sanchioni, Ryan Polselli and Derek Morton responded to Lakeshore Drive and arrested Amanda R. Wynne, 37, of 24 Sagamore Road, Attleboro, on a warrant.

10:07 a.m. A contractor working on South Street reported hitting a gas line, which caused a gas leak. Officers Benjamin Stickney and Jay Deiana responded along with the Fire Department, and the gas was shut off. Eversource was notified.

1:24 p.m. A walk-in handed in a credit card found in front of a store. Officer Benjamin Stickney returned it to the owner.

2:12 p.m. A caller reported losing her keys and wanted it logged.

4:27 p.m. A caller reported a boat blocking other boats’ access in and out of the area on Lakeshore Drive. Officers Preston Mucciarone, Robert Ekross and Brian Sanchioni responded and attempted unsuccessfully to make contact via phone and in person with the owner.

12:48 a.m. Officer Ryan Polselli found the outside door unsecured at an East Main Street building, while the inside door was found locked.

1:05 a.m. Officer Ryan Polselli checked on a person walking on Cedar Street. All was OK, as the individual lives further down the street.

9:12 a.m. An Oakhurst Road caller reported her credit cards were stolen. Officer Jay Deiana responded and took a report.

9:18 a.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil spoke with a Comcast crew taking up half a lane on East Main Street. They were to leave in a few minutes.

10:30 a.m. An employee of a West Main Street business reported a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident that took place a few weeks ago. Officer Moira McGafigan responded, and a report was to follow.

1:16 p.m. A walk-in reported something flew off a semi-trailer on Wood Street and hit her windshield. She was not injured. Officer Jay Deiana took a report.

3:44 p.m. A caller reported two Woodview Way tenants in a verbal argument. Officers John Corridan, Preston Mucciarone and Robert Ekross responded and assisted.

6:34 p.m. A caller reported three trailers parked at Sandy Beach on Lakeshore Drive without Hopkinton parking stickers. Officer Preston Mucciarone responded and issued a parking citation, and owners removed the other two trailers.

1:10 a.m. Officer Stephen Buckley removed two people walking on Sandy Beach.

9:45 a.m. A walk-in requested to speak with an officer about a protection order. Officer John Corridan spoke with the woman and referred her to Framingham District Court.

3:18 p.m. A walk-in reported someone stealing money in his house. Officers Robert Ekross and Brian Sanchioni assisted and took a report.

3:52 p.m. The Ashland Police Department requested a call from a Chestnut Street resident possibly involved in a hit and run in Ashland. Officer Derek Morton went to the residence, which appeared abandoned and with mail not belonging to the woman in question. Officer Morton notified the Ashland Police Department.

7:33 p.m. An employee of a West Main Street establishment reported an intoxicated patron leaving and falling down before entering his vehicle. The caller stated the wife, who did not appear intoxicated, had taken over. Officers Derek Morton, Brian Sanchioni and Robert Ekrosss responded, and the vehicle was gone upon their arrival.

7:57 p.m. A Rosewood Lane resident reported her abusive ex-husband had her social security card and was trying to charge her for its return. Officer Derek Morton advised her it was a civil matter and that she should speak to the Woburn Police Department.

1:45 p.m. Sergeant Timothy Brennan responded along with the Fire Department to a report of a lightning strike to a dog fence on Blueberry Lane. Minor damage to a wall was discovered. The electrical inspector responded. All units were cleared.

8:31 p.m. Officer Ryan Polselli responded along with the Fire Department to a lightning strike at an Elizabeth Road residence. Severe damage to the chimney was reported. The building inspector was contacted. No injuries were reported.

6:31 a.m. A passerby reported a road rage incident on Main Street but did not provide a license plate number.

Officer Brendon Lyver responded, and the reporting person stated the vehicle was a Jon Chimney Sweeping truck.

The caller was advised to notify the Ashland Police Department.

11:47 a.m. Multiple complaints were received about parking on Ash Street during a planned event. Officers Jay Deiana and Benjamin Stickney responded and reported a fight broke out. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Moira McGaffigan and Holliston police officers responded as back up. All parties were separated and the situation was under control. Officer Stickney took a report.

2:15 p.m. A caller reported a German shepherd puppy with a white collar loose on Spring Street. The caller was unable to catch it. The animal control officer was notified.

Obituaries Fred Bertram

Frederic C. Bertram, 86, of Milford, was called home to be with the Lord on July 27 and is now in the loving arms of Jesus. He was greeted upon arrival by his daughter Deborah and granddaughter Krista.

Fred grew up in Roslindale and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. A graduate of Boston College with a degree in economics, Fred worked in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, retiring at 77 from BJ’s Wholesale Club. Fred led his life by example. His infectious personality, kind demeanor and charming smile drew people to a man who was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His banter, wit, intelligence and humor are a few of his many delightful qualities that will be missed. His passions were antiquing, billiards, tennis, travel and taking meticulous care of his lawn and garden. Fred would consider himself a rich man, blessed with a wonderful family, a deep love for life and a wonderful community of faith at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Holliston.

Besides his loving wife of 61 years,

Christel, Fred is survived by his daughters, Karen (Bertram) Shell of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, and Heidi Bertram of Hopkinton; his sons-in-law, Steve Shell and Tim Norton; and his three grandsons, Trevor Shell, Craig Norton and Christian Norton. He was predeceased by his daughter Deborah Ann (Bertram) Norton and granddaughter Krista Bertram Norton. Fred also leaves behind his loving brother-in-law Peter Renk and his wife, Diana, along with two nieces, Stephanie Freeman and Michelle McGarvey. Additionally, he leaves behind a multitude of treasured cousins and many cherished colleagues, dear friends and neighbors whose company he deeply enjoyed throughout his life.

A celebration of Fred’s life, legacy and faith was held Aug. 10 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Holliston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 600 Central St., Holliston, MA 01746 in honor of Frederic C. Bertram. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton (ChesmoreFuneralHome.com).

His family members would like to extend their most heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the many wonderful people who cared for Fred throughout his various health challenges. His dear family friend and special nurse, Linda Barnard, along with the staffs of Preferred Transitions, Dana-Farber Cancer Center and the Milford Regional Medical Center guided him through a difficult time in his life with patience, kindness and lots of love. These folks were all truly God’s angels at work in Fred’s life.

Rejoice for him, he has begun his eternal life in Heaven and is celebrating with his beautiful daughter Debbie, precious granddaughter Krista and the many relatives who have gone before him.

George Desmond

George R. Desmond of Framingham, formerly of Sherborn, passed away peacefully on Aug. 13. He was the husband of Alice B. Desmond, to whom he was married for 59 years.

Born in Framingham in 1930, he was the son of the late George R. Desmond Sr. and Kathryn Orzeck Desmond. He graduated from St. Stephen School in Framingham, Boston College High School in 1947 and Boston College in 1951. He started law school at Boston College and then served in the U.S. Army 66th Counterintelligence Corps in Germany as a resident special agent in Weiden, Bavaria, for two years. After his discharge from the Army he finished law school at Georgetown University in 1956 and worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington and on special assignments in Montgomery, Alabama; New Orleans; Biloxi, Mississippi; and Pensacola, Florida. While in Montgomery he met Alice Ballard, whom he married in 1960.

He stayed with the Department of Justice until 1962 when he returned to Framingham to open a law practice.

He started out in a general practice of law but over the years the practice developed into a concentration on bankruptcy and insolvency. He was involved in many notable reported cases and was active in bar association activities, serving as chairman of the Massachusetts Bar Association Committee on Bankruptcy from 1970-76 and as president of the South Middlesex Bar Association in 1977.

He enjoyed traveling across the country with his family, cooking, and hosting friends at his home. He served as a lay lector at St. Stephen Church in Framingham and St. Theresa Church in Sherborn. He was especially devoted to Boston College High School, where he served as the reunion organizer of his class.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter Mary Hooper, her husband, Sean Hooper, and grandchildren Liam Hooper and Haley Hooper of St. Charles, Illinois; his son, John Desmond, his wife, Cecile Desmond, and grandson James Desmond of Hopkinton; his daughter Susan Desmond of Lynn, and his sister Maureen Kelly, and her husband, Brian Kelly, of Camden, Maine. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Hunter of Natick and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

A funeral Mass was held Aug. 17 at St. Stephen Church. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home in Hopkinton (callanancronin.com).

Irene N. (Snyer) Sands, 83, of Winchester, New Hampshire, and formerly of Hopkinton, passed away Aug. 12.

Born and raised in Hopkinton, she was the daughter of the late Irene “Sue” (Davis) and Peter Snyer. She was the wife of 37 years to the late Theodore “Ted” Sands.

Family was very important to Irene. She was a loving daughter and wife, and devoted her life to taking care of others. She spent many years caring for nieces and nephews, and then being a caretaker of her parents and her husband. Irene had an amazing sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. She loved to cook and loved company, animals, taking care of her “house birds” and feeding the wild birds, and carnations. She made beautiful decorative candles and loved to grow flowers. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to many places.

Obituaries Irene is survived by Ted’s three children, Michelle “Shelly” Sands-Brockway and her husband, Ed; Debra Sands-Mazzola and her husband, Mark; and Jason Sands and his wife, Caryn. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her lifelong devoted friend Jean (Dumas) Arseneau will miss her terribly. She is predeceased by her siblings, Peter Snyer, Cornelius “Neacy” Snyer, George Snyer, Betty Holden and Sarah Stone.

Shelly, Ed, Jason, Caryn and her niece Irene DelBono were grateful for the chance to help and care for Ted and Irene, repaying their love and kindness.

A funeral service was held Aug. 17 at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton (ChesmoreFuneralHome.com). Burial was to be held privately at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal charity of one’s choice or the Monadnock Humane Society (monadnockhumanesociety.org), where Irene bought her little dog Sonja when she discovered she was going to be euthanized.

John Irvine It is with great sadness that the family of John “Johnny” Irvine announces his sudden passing on July 18 at the age of 66 years. He was born in Framingham on Sept. 20, 1952, to Wallace Irvine and the late Mary Gould Irvine of Hopkinton.

John is survived by his life partner, Barry Lee Jones, his father, Wallace Irvine, and stepmother, Alberta Irvine. He leaves behind his daughter, Laura Irvine-Courage, his son-in-law, Dave Courage, and his sons, Adam Irvine and his wife, Sally, and James Irvine. He has two grandchildren, Isabella and Olivia Courage. John also leaves a sister, Nancy Mooradian, a brother-in-law, Dave Mooradian, and a niece, Nicole Mooradian.

John started his career as an English teacher then became an entrepreneur, owning several businesses. John lived in Charleston South Carolina, where he loved the ocean, was an avid writer and poet, enjoyed the outdoors, traveling and dining out, and worked as a server. His true passion was building and selling homes with his father.

A graveside service was held Aug. 24 at Evergreen Cemetery in Hopkinton. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of John to a cancer research fund of their choosing. Arrangements were under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton (ChesmoreFuneralHome.com).

Joyce DeLeo M a r g a ret “Joyce” (Dempsey) DeLeo passed peacefully on Aug. 6 at Lancaster General Hospital at 80 years old after battling lung cancer. She was born on March 16, 1939, in Quincy to Walter and Lillian (Adams) Dempsey. She grew up in Hopkinton as the oldest of four siblings.

She married her high school sweetheart, Robert DeLeo, on May 2, 1959, in Hopkinton. They

were blessed by the birth of their only child, Bobbi Anne DeLeo. Bob’s career moved them around the country to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and finally to California, where they were actively retired for many years. Joyce loved her pets through the years and her newest roommate, pup Maggie, was a constant companion. Reading was her passion. She enjoyed her book club and many friendships made through it. Her joys in life were her grandchildren: Adam, his wife Becky, and Daniel Cavanaugh.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Lilly, and her husband, Bob. Joyce will be greatly missed by her daughter, Bobbi Anne, and her fiancé, Randy Kissinger, of Columbia, Pennsylvania, as well as her grandchildren, her brothers and extended family and friends.

Funeral services were under the care of Etzweiler Funeral Home (etzweilerfuneralhome.com) in York, Pennsylvania.

Phyllis Salyards Phyllis (Pearce) Salyards 84, of Sandwich and formerly of Hendon, United Kingdom and Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, passed away after a brief illness on Aug. 3. Phyllis attended school in London, England, and it was in 1954 where she met her future husband and lifelong partner, Charles Salyards, while he was stationed at a naval base during the Korean Conflict. They married in 1955 and began a wonderful love story that lasted 56 years.

Phyllis worked in the insurance industry and was a waitress for many years. She also was a homemaker. Phyl was all about people. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved talking and getting to know people and had a wonderful proper British accent for all to enjoy. She was quick to offer friendship to anyone who wanted a friend. She was a fantastic cook and lover of anything English.

She was very proud of her heritage and also proud when she became a naturalized American citizen in 2003 at a ceremony in Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston. She was a devoted and proud nana to her five grandchildren and loved spending time in Plymouth with the Pearce clan. She cherished her daily phone call with Aunt Pete as well as having lunches with her friends from Highview and her niece Joanne.

Phyllis leaves behind a son, Chip Salyards, his wife, Wende and five loving grandchildren, Kylie, Logan, Paityn, Cole and Trent, all of Hopkinton.

She also leaves behind a caring, loving and devoted sister-in-law, Jeanne Pearce of Plymouth, a wonderful brother-in-law, John Salyards of Marco Island, Florida, and many nieces, nephews, friends as well as extended family in the Pittsburgh area.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles, her brother, Leslie Pearce, her sister, Edna Ruffo, and her sister-in-law Rosalie.

A private memorial service was held Aug. 15 and she was interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne with her husband, “Dookie.”

Funeral services were under the care of Chapman, Cole & Gleason (ccgfuneralhome.com).
