New officers join Police Department

After two new hires in August, the Hopkinton Police Department now has 26 full-time officers serving the town.

In a recent discussion with several officers as well as Police Chief Ed Lee, the department personnel noted some of their plans going forth, which includes the roles of the new officers, the enhancement of the School Resource Officers roles and next year, adding a K9 to the force.

Officer Moira “Molly” McGaffigan and Officer Jay Deiana both joined the force in August.

McGaffigan attended St. Anselm College, worked for her dad at his funeral home and spent seven months working for MSPCA as an Animal Welfare Agent before joining Hopkinton.

“I wanted to be a police officer from day one. It took a journey to

TOPSoccer, a community-based training and placement program for young athletes with disabilities, will start its third season in Hopkinton this fall through Hopkinton Youth Soccer (HYS). Athletes from Kindergarten through 12th grade from Hopkinton and nearby towns are grouped by ability, not age, and play with coaches and “buddies” who encourage them and modify activities as needed.

Hopkinton’s program started when Jessica Bruce, a Hopkinton occupational therapist, parent, and coach, received an email two years ago from MA Youth Soccer that included an article and video about the TOPSoccer program. She contacted the national chairman of the program, brought that information to HYS, and received the green light.

Parents with children who participate in the program also give it a green light.

“We loved TOPSoccer and have recommended it to others,” said Corrie Mercer, mother of TOPSoccer athlete Grayson.

“Jessica Bruce runs a beautiful program that is the perfect combination of being organized and fun.

The adult volunteers, as well as the older soccer ‘buddies’ all appear to want to be there and seem to really enjoy working with the kids. It was the highlight of our Sunday evenings for two seasons so far. We very happily have signed Gray up for another session come fall 2018,” Mercer said.

The Pan Mass Challenge went on as planned even in the incredible downpour the first weekend of August.

Joining the thousands of bicyclists who participated in this annual event was Hopkinton resident Kristi Allen.

“My PMC route was from Wellesley to Bourne and it was awesome! For 45 miles it was hazy, hot and humid and then another 40 miles in torrential downpours and flash flood warnings! Despite the unpredictable weather, nothing could dampen our spirits,” she said.

O

ver the years, the town has had a succession of Economic Development Committees, all staffed by volunteers. In 1990, as the chairman of the Appropriation Committee, I suggested, for the first time, that the town hire a person whose sole function would be to bring business to town. As volunteers, I am aware of the time availability – outside of work and family responsibilities – can be somewhat limited. Now, the local Chamber of Commerce is serving in that capacity. Again, it is staffed with volunteers, whose intentions are laudable, but who also may not have the time to devote to bringing in business. Recently, the Boston Globe had an article about the critical need for hotel rooms, especially in Metrowest. New hotels are going in Marlboro and Natick. We voted a hotel district here in Hopkinton and need a fulltime, paid, employee to get out there and find a hotel; find tenants for the empty offices on South Street. It is time to revisit the Elmwood Park area again and get some tax paying businesses locating there. Surrounding communities have already gone ahead with this same idea and are finding it fruitful. With a good economic development employee bringing in business, his or her salary would be more than justified. We strongly suggest that the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager work on this suggestion for the economic betterment of the town.

It is with great sadness that after 12 years at Hopkinton Gourmet, we have decided to close the business, effectively the end of August. So many of you have been such a part of my life through my time here in Hopkinton.

I have always been made to feel so comfortable and welcomed here. We are truly thankful to have been able to serve you in this beautiful town.

The joys of customers from across the globe, through the Marathon, the high school exchange students, and some of the most gifted teachers that are helping to shape our younger generation, as well as a diverse working population- I am so thankful to have been touched by all of you through a coffee, a bagel, a sandwich . . . to share our stories through the comings and goings in our daily lives.

Many thanks also to the B.A.A., the hundreds and thousands of runners throughout the Marathon and specifically the Hopkinton Running Club through their support of H.G. on Saturday mornings. You have always been such a joy with your smelly socks and sweaty bodies that everybody knows that’s where your passion lies! Not to mention the countless members of the local contingent from Hopkinton High School who have enlightened me as a father and a parent with tales of their own lives in this town. Some of you may know, I have a huge passion for music, and have been a big supporter of the Hopkinton Arts community and arts in the schools. It has been wonderful to share with students their highs and lows with their musical and acting talents.

I wanted to thank you all personally and have realized that with all your support and encouragement, H.G. may not have survived as long as it has.

Gas station expansion OK’d for West Main

By Jim Kleinkauf Contributing Writer There were more than a few tense moments at the July 23 Planning Board hearing before final approval was given for the proposed expansion of the Mobil gas station located on West Main Street.

The final hearing for the proposed “Minor Project – 84, 86, 88, 92 West Main” presented an interesting scenario, first, because only five of the current nine members were eligible to vote, and second, because all five needed to vote in the affirmative in order for the site plan to be approved for Global Companies, LLC. of Waltham, All details were spelled out in a submitted document: “An application for Minor Project Site Plan Review has been submitted to the Board. A decision is due by 7/30 and a majority vote is required for approval. The applicant received approval from the Board of Appeals on 6/27 (special permit for the use/dimensional variances), and from the Conservation Commission on 6/5. The Board of Appeals granted all of the requested special permits and variances, including the front setback and for the sign.

“Member voting: 5 votes from the existing Planning Board members at the time the public hearing opened are needed for approval. New members are welcome to discuss and ask questions but will have to abstain on the vote when a motion is made.

“The application proposes the demolition of the existing gas station/ retail sales building, gas island canopy and single family home, and construction of a new gas station/retail sales building on a parcel that currently consists of 4 lots. The parcel will front on West Main St., Elm St. and Lumber St. Extension, with access to Elm St. and West Main St.” In actual practice the process developed complications - especially since most of the contentious issues, including approval from other relevant town boards, had already been covered.

“We think it would be an unfair and uncompetitive issue for us not to have 24 hours when Cumberland Farms does,” said Global’s attorney Peter Barbieri.

He went on to argue that since “there is nothing in the bylaws with regard to site plan review, which is what this is, that there was no authority to deal with hours of operation as part of that approval.”

And because of the millions of dollars in acquisition costs and replacement of buildings, Barbieri said “It would be an unfair and uncompetitive issue for us not to have 24 hours when Cumberland Farms has it.”

But Muriel Kramer, the Planning Board’s new chair did not agree.

While admitting that the applicant had made a case for 24 hour operation, she said “It is entirely in our purview to consider the impact on surrounding neighborhoods and residences. And hours of operation and lighting are part of that.”

Barbieri then pointed out that the gas station site was 300 feet from the nearest residence.

Board members David Paul and Amy Ritterbusch both said they supported 24 hour operation for the applicant.

Board Vice Chair Fran DeYoung was not as pleased with the idea.

“I wrestle with it, quite frankly I wish there was an overall moratorium and this is just speaking for one person - from 12 -5 p.m. and I live by about 300 yards away.”

But the most pushback on hours of operation came from board member Francis D’Urso, who maintained his opposition right up until the vote was about to be called.

Fortunately Kramer was able to convince D’Urso to vote in the affirmative, especially in light of the fact that for the first time in his five-year tenure on the board, D’Urso had managed to convince the applicant to agree to install solar panels on the site.

Darkow’s project was also an STEM inspired 8-week after school program. Working with Scott and the HPTA, she designed an after school engineering program for first grade girls that included hands on engineering topics that utilized STEM skills. A total of 16 girls from Center

School participated every Monday for eight weeks and received certificates for taking part in the Little Engineers program.

Both programs have received very positive feedback from the participants and their parents and were developed to continue as part of the HPTA’s after school curriculum under new leadership.

The girls were presented with their Gold Award pins by Danielle Dulchinos, Director of Volunteer Engagement for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass. who said that the Gold Award has inspired girls to find greatness inside themselves and to share their passions with their communities.

Second annual Hopkinton Family Day to be held Sept. 15 Fireworks at last year’s event

The event is run by the Friends of Hopkinton and supports the group’s mission to encourage and support town spirit, enthusiasm, and pride. all activities on Hopkinton Family Day are free! There will be no fundraising taking place on the day of the event. The only charges will be for food which will be provided by a variety of food trucks.

nspired by Hopkinton’s 300th Anniversary Celebration in 2015, the second annual Hopkinton Family Day will take place Saturday, Sept. 15, rain or shine, at the High School Athletic Fields, 90 Hayden Rowe St. The event is run by the Friends of Hopkinton and supports the group’s mission to encourage and support town spirit, enthusiasm, and pride.

“It’s all about community,” said Friends of Hopkinton member and former Town Clerk Ann Click, who is excited to see a lot of participation and enthusiasm for this annual event.

Hopkinton Family Day, which will be from 3-10 p.m., will feature activities hosted by many town organizations. Attendees can experience face painting, decorate mini pumpkins, participate in a tug of war, take pictures in the photo booth, show off their hula hoop skills or try out the pitching machine. The Girls Scouts will sponsor a Kids Fun Race from 4 – 5:30 p.m. There will be live entertainment, and the all-time favorite – fireworks - to end the day’s activities.

New this year is the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge provided by the Bishop Rice Council #4822. The event, which will be held from 3-6 p.m., will be a penalty shot competition with official scoring for girls and boys ages 9-14 from Hopkinton and Ashland. Following settlement Greyhound Friends license up for renewal

ollowing a settlement agreement between Greyhound Friends and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), Town Manager Norman Khumalo announced that the Board of Selectmen’s public hearing regarding the kennel license application has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 11 In the announcement, Khumalo said, “As of [Aug. 3], a settlement agreement concluding the investigation of the Attorney General’s Office into the applicant’s financial practices has not been executed. The new hearing schedule will allow time for the Board and the public to view the results of that investigation once the settlement agreement is made public.”

The application for the kennel license this summer followed legal and regulatory battles the shelter has faced since the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources issued a cease and desist order in January 2017, preventing them from taking additional dogs from out of state. The town of Hopkinton subsequently suspended their kennel license, forcing them to transfer dogs to other shelters. In March 2017, Greyhound Friends’ Founder Louise Coleman was charged in Middlesex District Court with one felony count of animal cruelty after an investiga-

tion by the Hopkinton Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and Hopkinton Animal Control found the conditions of the kennel had been “continuously unsanitary.”

After a bench trial that lasted four days, Coleman was found not guilty in December 2017. At the conclusion of the trial, Judge David Cunis said, “Although [Coleman] may have taken her eye off the ball, so to speak, of the physical upkeep of the kennel, this was indeed a regulatory issue that called for a regulatory solution. The evidence falls far short of establishing that she violated a criminal statute.”

Critics of Greyhound Friends, including a group who started the website truthaboutgreyhoundfriends. com, expressed concern that the trial focused too narrowly on the sanitary conditions of the kennel from 2015-17 and excluded evidence that showed the dogs had been neglected and, in some cases, not provided appropriate medical care.

The Attorney General’s investigation that led to the Aug. 3 settlement agreement reviewed extensive financial records, including several years’ worth of financial logs and bank account records, loans to/from board members and relatives, a Greyhound Friends-owned Cadillac Escalade and contracts awarded to

the founder’s neighbor.

The settlement agreement requires increased oversight of financial matters and explicitly prohibits them from appointing or employing Coleman in any capacity. The agreement further prohibits the board from acting “in a manner contrary to any injunctive relief which may be ordered against Ms. Coleman as part of a Judgement of Consent arising from the AGO’s investigation of Greyhound Friends.”

Additionally, the settlement calls out actions already taken by Greyhound Friends over the course of the past two years to address concerns that arose during the investigation.

Specifically, Greyhound Friends composed a Governance Committee, updated its conflict of interest policy and annual disclosure procedures, composed a Finance Committee and elected a qualified treasurer. According to the agreement, they also “expanded [their] Board of Directors to add oversight capacity in finance and accounting, kennel compliance and animal care best practices, and electronic record keeping and database functions.”

In a complaint against Coleman dated Aug. 7, the Attorney General’s Office concluded that, “On numerous occasions, from at least as early as 2013 through March 2017, Ms. Coleman breached her fiduciary duty of loyalty to [Greyhound Friends] with respect to her use of [Greyhound Friends’] assets for her own personal use, including the use of [Greyhound Friends’] assets for expenditures that were personal to her and not in furtherance of [Greyhound Friends’] chari“The Big Picture in a Small Town”

The Attorney General’s Office further charged that “Because Ms. Coleman cannot account for the use of certain GHF assets from at least as early as 2014 through March 2017— including the withdrawal of petty cash and the withdrawal of four figure sums of cash from GHF’s bank account— and because she cannot account for the extent to which those cash withdrawals furthered GHF’s charitable purposes, Ms. Coleman must stand the loss.”

In a settlement reached with the Attorney General, Coleman agreed to pay $40,000 to Greyhound Options, Inc, a separate Greyhound rescue organization located in Ware, Mass. In the agreement, Coleman did not admit to any wrongdoing.

While the Attorney General has reached agreements with both Coleman and Greyhound Friends, the shelter remains closed until at least after the Sept. 11 Board of Selectmen’s meeting where their application for a new kennel license will be reviewed.

In an Aug. 6 letter sent to Town Manager Khumalo, Town Council Raymond Miyares said, “To reach its decision regarding a recommendation to the Town Clerk, the Board will consider, among other things, whether the kennel has been maintained in a sanitary and humane manner and if records have been properly kept as required by law.” The Sept.

Spilka is elected as Massachusetts State Senate President

tate Sen. Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland) was elected to be the president of the Massachusetts State Senate by her Senate colleagues July 26. Spilka represents the Metrowest communities of Ashland, Framingham, Franklin, Holliston, Hopkinton and Medway, which comprise the 2nd Middlesex & Norfolk district.

“Serving in the Massachusetts Senate has been, and will continue to be, one of the greatest chapters in my life story,” Spilka said in a release from her office. “I pledge to uphold and maintain the integrity of the Senate, an institution I can honestly say I love with all of my heart. I look forward to working with people from all over the state, to build on the strengths we bring from each region, and to tackle our challenges head on, so that Massachusetts will continue to be a leading light in our nation.”

Before being elected to the presidency, Spilka served as the chair of the Massachusetts Senate Committee on Ways & Means beginning in January 2015. Prior to that, she served as the Senate Majority Whip (2013-2015), Assistant Majority Whip (2012-2013), chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies (2009-2012), and chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities (2005-2009), a committee she helped originate. She began her legislative career as a State Representative for the Seventh Middlesex district in 2001.

Spilka is a graduate of Northeastern Law School and holds a B.S. in social work from Cornell University. She has been married for over 20 years to Joel S. Loitherstein, an environmental engineer, and has one adult step-daughter and two adult sons—Heather, Scott and Jake— and two rescue dogs.

Five years ago, Hopkinton Officer Steve Buckley started the town’s National Night Out. “This is the opportunity to be working together to build strong trust in the community, he said.

A group of veterans called The Old Guard brought their cooking expertise to the barbeque grill with hamburgers and hot dogs. Local chefs are Don MacNeil, Bob Bolanvrina, Tony Charest, Mike Arakelian and Stan Feinburg.

The Old Guard started with the “Missing in America” program which culminated with the internment of cremains of unclaimed veterans.

Hopkinton is only one town of many who have benefitted from this organization – they serve at the Hopkinton Firefighters Memorial as well as donating their services to support and honor veterans and all emergency personnel. The group also participates in Memorial Day services and fires the 21-gun salute, in Hopkinton, as well as performing that duty in the Honor Guard at the Bourne National Cemetery.

Jay Deiana, the youngest of five children and a life-time resident of Hopkinton, was thrilled when he got the call to join the town’s police department.

“I love the town. It is a dream working here,” said Deiana.

A graduate of MassBay Community College, he noted working with Professor Mark Stanton there had inspired him when discussing legal cases.

“I loved the work with [Stanton].

We went over criminal case law, which explains the way laws change to set guidelines on how we operate today,” he said.

Deiana plans on pursuing his bachelor’s degree via the online program at Bay State College .

Another new officer was appointed in March by the selectmen.

Officer Ben Stickney graduated from high school in 2006 and was studying criminal justice at Dean College when he was called to the police department in Sherborn, first as a part-timer and then fulltime for 10 years. He then attended the Police Academy in Reading in 2011.

“I spent time in Hopkinton and

Milford when I was a kid, loved the town, people, atmosphere, small town feel,” he said.

Noting that several Sherborn police officers were residents of Hopkinton, he added that it “created an atmosphere of comradery, telling stories of town.”

According to Lee, Stickney and Officer Mat Santoro will be joining Officer Phil Powers as School Resource Officers. They will be rotating on a part-time basis at the high school, middle school and Hopkins Elementary School. They will also go to the lower schools when various drills are run on fire and evacuation safety.

“We use the ALICE program – alert, lock down, inform, counter, evaluate. We drill in each school in an age appropriate way,” said Powers.

“Doing anything that will slow down the attacker is better than just hiding and waiting. The older students have options they can take advantage of themselves.”

The schools are now on a double door lock system, reducing the number of people that can enter, he said.

Next year the department anticipates getting another new officer – a K9.

“All dogs are trained for tracking then one other job – drugs, bomb, gunpowder, cadaver. Because of the [Boston] Marathon, we will probably go with bomb detection,” said Lee. Officer Brian Sandchioni will be training for this position and will be the dog’s handler.

The coaches and volunteers are amazing and always find ways to make soccer fun for our boys,” she said. “Organized sports have always been a challenge for our boys and TOPSoccer provides an opportunity to make our family feel included. I would highly recommend this program. We’re so grateful to Jessica and the other coaches and volunteers for making this possible for our boys and the other special needs kids in our community.”

For Bruce, the reactions from the athletes have been satisfying.

“The highlight of the program is watching children that may have difficulty on a ‘traditional’ soccer team, run, kick, score goals, cheer for each other and most of all smile!” she said.

“I love hearing them ask when the next soccer practice is and watching

them stay at the fields after practice is over to keep playing with their friends and family.

“The other highlight of the program is watching the athletes interact with their buddies and coaches...the buddies (middle/high school volunteers) are what makes the program run and watching these young kids give back to their community by exhibiting patience, understanding and just having fun is wonderful to witness.”

In its first two seasons (fall and spring), TOPSoccer drew between 11 and 13 athletes from Hopkinton, Holliston, and Marlborough. They played with approximately 20 buddies and coaches incorporating bubbles, parachutes, and other fun activities with more typical soccer skills and games.

Mercer recommends the program to others whose children may not find other soccer programs appealing.

“Gray has never participated in other soccer programs because there is always the fear of him not performing like his typical peers,” she said. “Crowds, social pressure and expectations can trigger anxiety

in even the most grounded adult, but it is multiplied by 100 for a child on the spectrum. Having a program like TopSoccer available to kids like Gray is amazing. He can experience

an organized sport, but without fear of judgment.”

“Mark, Phoebe and I enjoyed cheering on the players and watching our son’s beautiful face light up with delight when he scored a goal,” she added. “We enjoyed knowing that Gray was in such capable hands each Sunday, and having the peace of mind that no one (players, buddies, spectators, etc) would even think twice if he didn’t want to participate, or needed to take a break.”

The only change Bruce would like to make to the program is increasing numbers.

“I know one thing that won’t change is the ‘tunnel’ which ends each one of our practices,” she said. “The athletes run through a ‘tunnel’ of the buddies and coaches their faces light up. It’s just a perfect way to end the session.”

The program meets on Sundays from Sept. 9 through Oct. 21 (excluding Columbus Day weekend) from 2-3 p.m. on the Fruit Street grass fields.

UniBank donates $3,500 to Apple Tree Arts Funds support year-round theatre arts programs Region – UniBank recently announced that a donation of $3,500 was made to Apple Tree Arts in Grafton. The donation supports the theatre arts programs that are continuously growing, particularly in the summer months. Students from Grafton, Whitinsville, Douglas, Shrewsbury, Millbury, Sutton, Upton, Uxbridge and other surrounding towns come to Apple Tree Arts to participate in program offerings throughout the year.

The yearlong programming at Apple Tree Arts includes 14 theatre arts productions for youth in grades 1-12. The organization also provides a creative dramatics program that explores and develops student skills in improvisation, storytelling, “on-the-fly thinking,” originality and creativity.

Beer/wine license approved for Mobil station

The Board of Selectmen voted at its Aug. 7 meeting to approve a beer and wine package store license for Hopkinton Friendly Services, the operator of the Mobil gas station off Route 495.

The wine and beer license application that was approved is for the current Mobil gas station and convenience store located at 92 West Main Street. Global Partners, the land owner, plans to raze all existing structures and construct a new 3,840± square foot gasoline station and convenience store with eight gasoline pumps (16 fueling positions) with canopies and rebranded as “Alltown Fresh”. There is not yet

a date for that building to be razed.

The license approved by the 3-2 vote, with Chair Claire Wright and John Coutinho voting no, is contingent on the following terms: 1. Submission of a revised floor plan indicating that the alcoholic beverages for sale will be kept in four coolers only; 2. All outstanding fees owed to the town are paid; 3. Acknowledging that the license is for the current building only (the current building is planned to be demolished and a new store constructed on an expanded lot).

If a new license is desired for the new location and building, a new application to the board will be required.

Start Line Pediatrics in Hopkinton will be offering a free baby basics class on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:15 p.m. at its new office located at 77 West Main St., Suite 201, Hopkinton.

This class is ideally geared to first time expecting parents, but all are welcome. Nurse Practitioner Faith A. DeCesare and RN Marissa Monteiro will be offering tips on how to get ready for delivery, what to expect at the hospital, advice on bringing your newborn home and basic guidelines about caring for your newborn.

opkinton High School will be adding a new program to its Athletics Department this school year – Unified Basketball.

Unified sports programs are designed to provide competitive teams for students with and without physical or intellectual disabilities.

Supported by Special Olympics, schools can organize teams to play against other high school teams with similar programs.

Hopkinton Public School’s Athletic Director Dee King proposed the idea of a Unified Basketball team to the School Committee during its Aug. 13 special summer meeting.

“What is great is that a lot of our surrounding towns already have Unified Basketball teams so scheduling and implementation will be easy,” said King.

Finding a coach for the new team won’t be a problem either, according to King.

“We already have a number of interested adults who want to coach the team,” she told the committee.

Steven Kerr, of Hopkinton, graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Western New England (WNE) University in May 2018. Later this month, Kerr will join more than 400 recruits in Fort Benning, GA, to begin Army Basic Training. As the WNE University Golden Bear lacrosse goalie, Kerr was a three-year starter and threetime All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) selection for the men’s lacrosse program. He collected IMLCA All-Northeast Region accolades as both a sophomore and senior and was also recognized as a USILA All-American (Honorable Mention) at the conclusion of his final collegiate season.

Sept. 19 The Hopkinton Historical Society and the Hopkinton Public Library will host author John Hodgson who will share his biography of Richard Potter at 6.30 p.m., at the library, 13 Main St. Potter was born in Hopkinton in 1783 of an enslaved African mother and white father, and later rose to the status of world-class performer and entertainer inside the quirky and fascinating world of magic and ventriloquism.

Hodgson’s meticulous research uncovers the remarkable life of this bi-racial traveler and performance artist who managed to navigate the complicated world of early 19th century America.

$3.5 million turf field at Hopkinton High School is on track to be ready for play

by Monday, Oct. 1, capping off a multi-year project that HHS athletic director Dee King said is essential to keeping the program running at a high level.

“Having a turf field has become a necessity to function at a high level and allow kids time to practice and get games in,” King said. “There were some people who asked whether we need this and why we can’t just maintain our grass fields. Those are good questions, but it’s more about the opportunity to be able to play in weather and get games and practices in.”

King, who is beginning her third year as athletic director, said the turf field project has been a top priority since she got the job before the 2016 school year. Hopkinton was one of three schools in the Tri-Valley League, along with Millis and Norton, that did not have a turf field.

The past two years have been spent securing funding and getting planning and construction underway. Barring any setbacks, the new field will be ready for play for the soccer and field hockey teams by the start of October.

“From the second I got hired, this was the first project that we began because we were so far behind from a community standpoint,” King said. “This will extend the season and extend the day.”

The turf field will be behind the stadium field, where the football team plays. It will form an “L” shape with a baseball diamond and a softball diamond in opposite corners. In the middle will be a large, rectangular field that can be used for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and football. The entire complex will have lights, enabling night games for any sports that use the space.

Projected to cost $3.8 million, King said the field came in under budget at around $3.5 million. Most of the funding came through the town, but some fundraising efforts have taken place and are ongoing through private and corporate sponsorships, King said.

There will be a significant amount of space between the baseball and softball diamonds, allowing both sports to play at the same time.

King said she is working on funding for fences for the two diamonds, placing that price tag at around $50,000. But the primary project, the turf field, is on its way.

“I am pumped for our kids and our community,” King said.

Strong senior class leads Hopkinton football

T

he Hopkinton High School football team will return 21 seniors to the field this season, including the starting quarterback, and the offensive and defensive lines that helped the team to a district title and a spot in the Division 4 state semifinal a season ago.

“We have a solid senior class and very solid senior leadership, led by four terrific captains,” said head coach Jim Girard. “So we are going to be relying on that group of kids.”

Starting quarterback Ryan Kelleher returns for his senior season after guiding the Hillers to a 10-1 mark a year ago.

“He had a spectacular season last year,” Girard said. “And he did a lot of things in the offseason to get even better. He brings excellent leadership and poise at the quarterback position and a good understanding of our offensive scheme. We rely on him heavily.”

We have a solid senior class and very solid senior leadership, led by four terrific captains.

Head coach Jim Girard Fellow senior captain Theo Cavallo will be back as the starting center and also see time on the defensive line. Girard praised Cavallo’s work ethic as another example of team leadership.

The Hillers boasted one of the top defenses in Eastern Mass. last year, and a pair of seniors captains will be key cogs on that side of the ball. Luke D’Aloia returns in the secondary, in addition to his role as a wide receiver.

Ryan Brown, the fourth captain, was penciled in to start on the defensive line, but Girard said he suffered an injury and will miss some time.

“We are hoping to get him back at some point later on this season,” Girard said. “Like Luke, he is an intense player with a great passion for the game and his teammates.”

The coach said this senior class is a tight-knit group, and he hopes the younger players will be able to gel through the early weeks of the season.

While the Hillers feature a great deal of experience on the lines, Girard said most of the offensive skill positions will have new players in starting roles and only three starters return on defense. Although many players will be new to starting roles, most of the 60-member roster was able to gain some experience at the varsity level in 2017.

Girard said he expects to put a competitive team on the field again this fall, beginning with the season opener Friday, Sept. 7 against Wayland.

“Our goals are the same every year,” he said. “If we stay healthy, we have a good group that can have a lot of success.”

10:30 a.m. A Thayer Heights Road caller reported fire alarms sounding but no sight or smell of smoke or fire. Officers Arthur Schofiedl and Jay Deiana responded along with the Fire Department to check the house.

11:30 a.m. A walk-in dropped of shotgun ammunition. Officer Stephen Buckley assisted.

11:41 a.m. A walk-in requested to speak with an officer. Officer Stephen Buckley took a report.

1:23 p.m. A walk-in spoke with Officers Jay Deiana and Arthur Schofield about a case of fraud.

3:40 p.m. Officer Moira McGaffigan took a report of fraud on Overlook Road. A report will follow.

8:16 p.m. A caller reported seeing someone hang something on the front door of a West Main Street building and walk to the back of the building. Officer John Corridan responded and reported it is laundry hanging on the front door. Officer Corridan spoke with the owner on scene and all was okay.

8:40 p.m. A Leon’s Way resident reported his son’s bike was stolen. Officer John Corridan responded and took a report.

August 10 11:53 a.m. On Gibbon Road Officer Jay Deiana arrested Alexander G. Toloczko, 24, of 9 Gibbon Road and charged him with Operation of Motor Vehicle with License Suspended and Unlicensed Operation of

Motor Vehicle.

12:22 p.m. A walk-in reported attempted identity theft. No financial loss was reported.

Sergeant Joseph Bennett assisted the reporting person.

6:42 p.m. A caller reported an open door at a Fruit Street building. Officer John Corridan responded and secured the door.

6:45 p.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil spoke with a walk-in who had some questions.

7:14 p.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil checked on a disabled motor vehicle on West Main Street. The driver was waiting for AAA and for a friend to driver her home.

9:44 p.m. A Freedom Way resident reported a person is threatening neighbors.

August 11 11:27 a.m. A caller reported an owl with a damaged wing in the middle of the roadway of Wilson Street. Officer Jay Deiana responded and checked the area with a negative find.

4:17 p.m. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded to a minor motor vehicle accident on West Main Street. No injuries were reported.

August 12 2:58 p.m. A Woodview Way caller requested assistance with removing unwanted persons. Officers Brian Sanchioni and Moira McGaffigan responded and removed two parties involved in a tenant discrepancy.

5:02 p.m. A caller reported an erratic red Mitsubishi with no license plates on Fruit Street. Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and checked the area with a negative find.

The Westborough Police Department was notified.

5:32 p.m. A motorist reported the traffic lights and the intersection of South and West Main Streets are not functioning properly.

Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and reported a crew is working on the lights.

Adelaide Ruth Schuster, 6 Hopkinton Adelaide Ruth S c h u s t e r, 6 , of Hopkinton, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from complications related to a rare neurological disease. Adelaide spent her final days peacefully at home surrounded by family and many friends. She is now with the Lord and greatgrandparents in Heaven and is able to do all the things she was previously unable to do.

Loved and cared by all that met her, she loved music, going to school with wonderful friends, teachers, and therapists, as well as travel, and to be held close.

She is survived by her parents, Lars and Elizabeth Schuster; siblings Charlotte and Levi; grandparents Gary and Martha Bunkers of Lakeville, Minnesota as well as Wesley and Dawn Schuster of St. Helena Island, S.C. She also leaves behind a large extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins from California, Minnesota, Texas, and Virginia.

A funeral Mass was held at St. John the Evangelist Church.

A reception to celebrate Adelaide’s life and memory was held at the Hopkinton Country Club directly following Mass. Gail Jane Belmore, 80 Milford - Gail Jane Belmore, 80, of Milford and formerly of Hopkinton, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018.

Born in Natick, she was the daughter of the late Esther (Hoey) and Philip McRobert. She was the wife of the late Joseph R. Belmore.

Gail recently retired from Jamie Oil Company in Ashland, and previously worked for many years at Terry Oil Company in Hopkinton.

She leaves many friends and family in Hopkinton and Marlborough, and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Martin of Whitinsville and Lisa Daly of Milford. She also leaves behind her siblings, Judith McCommis of Bellingham, Philip McRobert of Hopkinton, Janet Mackay of Hopkinton; three grandchildren, Carly and Trevor Martin and Keelin Daly; sisters-in-law, Mary and Donna McRobert, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother, William McRobert and her son-in-law, David Martin.

Inez Globman, 95 Hopkinton - Inez Globman, 95, of Hopkinton, passed away Monday, July 16, 2018 at the Milford Regional Medical Center. Born in Meriden, CT, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (White) and Samuel Umansky.

She was the former wife of Benjamin Globman.

Inez and Benjamin were founding members of the B’nai Shalom Synagogue in Newington, Conn.

She loved music, reading, and writing short stories and had served on the library board in Newington. She especially took pleasure in spending time with her great-granddaughter, Ivy. Inez greatly appreciated the staff at Golden Pond in Hopkinton where she had lived for the past eight years.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Fargnoli and her husband, Paul of Hopkinton; three grandchildren, Jessica Fargnoli and her husband, Daniel Rosenthal, Michael Fargnoli, and Katie Fargnoli and her husband, Jimmy Long. She also leaves behind her great granddaughter, Ivy Mae Rosenthal and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters, Rhoda Chain and Shirley Ehrlich.

A graveside service was held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Shiva was observed following the graveside service. Born in Pelham, NH, he was the son of the late Lewis and Marjorie (Bond) Forrest. Kenneth was the devoted husband of 66 years to Ann L. (Doucette) Forrest.

During WWII, he served in the US Navy as a Torpedoman’s Mate 2nd class.

Kenneth owned and operated a local machine shop for many years.

Besides his wife Ann, Kenneth is survived by his daughter Kendra Weldon and her children Kristina and Kyle Weldon, all of Hopkinton.

He is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Voter, Robert Forrest and Richard Forrest.

In keeping with Kenneth’s wishes, funeral services will be private.

Shaun Michael Coffey, 47 Hopkinton Shaun Michael Coffey, 47, of Hopkinton, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2018 of a massive heart attack after being stricken at home. Born in Framingham, he was the son of Judith A. (Cain) and Peter M. Coffey of Hopkinton.

A longtime Hopkinton resident, Shaun was a 1988 graduate of Hopkinton High School. During his younger years, he enjoyed playing basketball and football. He had worked at the Radisson Hotel, Genzyme Corp. in Westborough, and most recently was the owner/operator of Vape Escape in Bellingham. Shaun had been a Cub Master for his son’s den for many years. He was an avid Pats fan, took pleasure in playing pool, fishing, camping with his children, and cooking with his daughter.

Besides his parents, Shaun is survived by his former wife, Dawn Bailey of Hopkinton; his two children, Jacob and Makayla Coffey of Hopkinton; his brother, Matthew Coffey and his wife, Rami of Conway, NH, and his sister, Elise Coffey of California. He also leaves behind two nephews, Mason and Brody, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation was held.at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton.

Jeffrey S. Miller Milford - Jeffrey S. Miller, originally of Natick, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday morning, August 12, 2018. Jeff had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for the last several years. He is survived by his loving wife Charlene Hall Miller, his children Nick Miller (Kathleen Miller), Richard Laney (Samantha Laney), Allison Mercier (Matt Mercier), Timothy Miller and Peter Helmuth, his 11 grandchildren Mackenzie, Kayla, Matthew, Kelsey, Lola, Jackson, Gavin, Braeden, Brielle, Maeve, and Cameron. Also, his siblings Ron Miller (Janice Miller), Gail Langhart, Marion Hamilton, and Laurie Kelly (Martin Kelly). Jeffrey is predeceased by his parents Bruce and Grace Miller, two of his brothers, Carl Miller and Bruce Miller, his nephew Randy Leonard and his daughter-in-

law Melissa Miller.

Jeff proudly served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam war.

He went on to earn two master’s degrees from Babson and Bentley College before marrying his high school sweetheart Charlene and settling into a long-term career at Polaroid. Jeff devoted himself to his children and family. He had an amazing sense of humor and that was just part of what made him the very best grampy to his 11 grands. They were the light of his life!

Music was a huge part of Jeff’s life, he had a natural ear and talent for it. He traveled everywhere with his guitar and had also learned to play the cello in honor of his mother Grace.

Jeff was considered a “rock star” at Faith Community Church where he was a member and a teacher and was able to touch many lives. In his later years Jeff attended The Community Covenant Church and was part of their worship team on Sunday mornings. Jeff was a guy who valued relationships, old and new. He always looked for opportunities to talk with people and hear their story. He would do anything he could to keep a smile on the face of the people he loved, often at his own expense! Steven F. Moschini, 39 Hopkinton - Steven F. Moschini, 39, of Hopkinton, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018. Born in Framingham, he was the son of Francis T. Moschini of Hopkinton, and the late Kathryn (Bryant) “Moosie” Moschini.

Besides his father, Steven is survived by his two children, Anthony Moschini of Holliston and Giovanni Moschini of Ashland, his brother; Michael Degnan Jr. of Winchendon; his grandmother, Theoni Bryant of Hopkinton, as well as several aunts, uncles, and other extended family members. There were thousands of volunteers that made about a million peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and made sure we were well nourished. The other riders were great and pushed me up the hills and through the weather,” she added.

generates more than 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue and it is Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. Over the past 38 years, PMC cyclists have ridden to raise and contribute $598 million to cancer research.

Allen has lived in Hopkinton for the past 20 years and for the past nine years worked at Takeda Pharmaceuticals Inc. based in Cambridge. For a majority of that time she worked as Director, Global Program Management in Cancer Drug Development.

In an email, she wrote “Then there were my Takeda team mates who were there every step (pedal) of the way supporting and encouraging me.

I have never pursued something like this before! With recent health issues, including a fractured ankle weeks ago, it was doubtful for a while that I could actually ride, but I was determined to be part of this year’s PMC and it was incredible! Yeah, I have a few aches and pains, but I was sort of sorry I wasn’t doing the second day. There is always next year!”

Allen noted that she was encouraged to commit to the PMC, joining the Takeda Oncology Team along with eight other colleagues. She said the reason was simple.

“We all know someone affected by cancer and new therapies are desperately needed. One hundred percent of funds raised goes to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to continue their research initiatives and clinical care. The Institute depends on these funds to do their important work.”

Allen’s inspiration is her dad, Walter Ding, who is a cancer survivor.

“My dad loves to travel and has many countries on his bucket list.

Recently, he invited me on a cruise in Greece. It was a once in lifetime experience to spend time with my dad and visit the birthplace of western civilization. The experience would not have been possible without fundraising events like the Pan Mass Challenge, as well as the hard work and dedication of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and companies like Takeda developing new treatments for cancer and supporting the patients and their families,” Allen said.
