Townie Tedstone rises to top

rendan Tedstone grew up in Hopkinton. Most readers of this newspaper know that. Most Hopkinton residents also know that when up for reelection in May, Tedstone received more votes than any other candidate for Select Board. Those who are well informed also are aware that Tedstone Brendan recently was voted Tedstone Select Board chair.

What most people are not aware of is how Tedstone, whose exploits include being a former minor league hockey enforcer and male nurse at a maximum-security prison, became the most prominent public official in our town.

As a teenager in Hopkinton, Tedstone (now 49) washed dishes at Carbone’s and pumped gas for Jerry Lazzaro at what is now the Hopkinton Sunoco.

The Hopkinton Police Department is hosting the sixth annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Town Common. oni and Bill Maher’s journey to becoming adoptive parents had its start with a seemingly random encounter in the supermarket.

The now-Hopkinton residents were living in Marshfield in 2003, with two young sons, when Toni spotted a mother having a rough time.

“I was in a grocery store and I saw this woman totally melting down,” Toni said. “I went up and introduced myself to her and said, ‘Hey, what’s going on, is there anything I can help you with?’ She INDEPENDENT was like, ‘Oh, I’m so stressed out. I’m a THOUGHTS nurse and I can’t take JERRY SPAR it. These kids drive me crazy.’ I really felt bad for her. Her youngest son looked familiar. I put it together that my son went to karate with him.

“So I invited them back to my house for lunch to calm down the mom.

We got to talking, and we talked about everything. She didn’t leave my house until like 5 o’clock that night. About 9 o’clock rolls around that same night, my phone rings and it’s her. She’s like, ‘Hey, I just wanted you to know that I’ve been thinking about you.’ She said, ‘My cousin, she’s a foster mom and she has this baby, the baby’s 6 months old and the baby was supposed to be reunited back with the mom, but [the state] decided that they’re not going to reunite and they’re going to start to sever the parental rights.’ She goes, ‘I keep thinking about your extra bedroom, do you think that I can have you talk to my cousin about this?’ I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I said, ‘Well, I’ve got to talk to my husband.’ “ Bill’s initial reaction was concern that adoption would not fit their plans, but it didn’t take long for him to change his opinion.

Said Toni: “He was like, ‘What?

This is crazy. We can’t do this. We want to retire early, we want to be able to downsize.’ Every excuse in the book, he was like, ‘We can’t do this.’ I said, ‘I know, right?’

“So we go to bed and I’m up all night thinking about it. My husband is set, he’s sleeping like a baby. He wakes up the next morning and says, ‘You know, something’s telling me we’ve got to go check out this baby. I don’t know why, but I think we should just see what this is all about.’ I’m like, ‘All right.’ So I start to make some phone calls, called the cousin who was the foster mom and she invited us over to meet the baby. By the end of that day we were going into Boston and meeting this baby. We’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this baby really is real.’ ” Toni and Bill decided to push forward, with support from their sons, Connor and Andrew (then 8 and 6 years old).

“They came with us to meet the original baby,” Toni said. “We were very open with them. We said, ‘This baby, she needs a home. What are your thoughts on this?’ They saw her, held her, played with her. They were like, ‘Mom, she needs to have a home?’ And we were like, ‘Yeah.’ They said, ‘Of course, Mom, you need to be her mom.’

So from the get-go they were on board.

They couldn’t believe that there were kids out there who didn’t have a mom and dad. Because we really weren’t exposed to anything like that.”

The Mahers contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF), sought advice and started the mandated training via Massachusetts Approach to Partnership in Parenting (MAPP), which is followed by a home study.

However, midway through the 10-week MAPP course, they were contacted by their social worker, who told them the foster mother had decided to adopt the child. Although frustrated, the Mahers decided to continue the process.

Said Toni: “Our social worker said, ‘Why don’t you guys just quit?’ We were like, ’Nah, we didn’t get dragged

into this for nothing. Something’s going on here. We have to stay the course and finish out this MAPP training, get home-studied, because now our eyes are opened to the fact that there are kids in foster care that need a home and a family.’ So we stayed on.”

It wasn’t long after that when the Mahers heard back from the social worker, and they got a couple of surprises.

“I was camping in Connecticut with my boys after the home study and I was on a beach when my phone rang,” Toni recalled. “The social worker said, ‘Hey, Toni, I just got a phone call. Would you be interested in taking infant twins that were just born?’ I was like, ‘Oh, wow.

Well, yeah, I could do that.’ So I said, ‘Well, wait a minute. Before I commit to saying yes, I’ll take these babies, I just keep thinking about this other baby, the one that we were originally going to go for.’ I said, ‘If we take the twins and if something happens to the other baby that we met, will it knock out our chances that we’re not going to be able to get this baby if she ever becomes available?

“She said, ‘Toni, I hope you’re sitting down.’ I said, ‘What?’ She said, ‘These are the biological siblings of the baby that you originally wanted to go for.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ She goes, ‘Yeah, the mom took off, she came back, she was pregnant with twins and we ended up taking the babies right at the hospital.’ So I’m like, Oh my gosh.’

“So it all kind of came together like that. That’s how we got into it. We went ahead and got the twins.”

That wouldn’t be the end of it — not even close. Having become aware to how many children needed homes — either temporarily or permanently — Toni decided she could do more.

“When the twins were 2 years old I started to hear about infants that were being born and not having any homes — they were going to hotline homes,” she said. “So I started to open my house back up for infant foster care. So I got a few babies from there. I would have them for a couple of weeks, a couple of months, then they would either go back to the bio parents or to a kinship

adoption or something like that.

“The last baby that I got was Emma, and she stayed with us. We ended up adopting her.”

The year after Emma entered their home, she was diagnosed as a highfunctioning autistic.

“We got her when she was 4 months old. At 18 months old I knew something was up,” Toni said. “Then we started with the testing. First it came out to be ADHD. Then no, she’s autistic — very high-functioning autism. I’ve never had an autistic child, so I had a lot to learn.”

As the kids got older and the family relocated to Hopkinton in 2013 for Bill’s work, Toni took on a new challenge — and that led to the family expanding yet again.

“After we moved to Hopkinton, my husband goes, ‘Hey, all the kids are in school. Why don’t you go get a job?’

I’m like, ‘A job? Oh my God, I haven’t had a job in over 20 years. What am I going to do?’ “ she recalled. “I started thinking, you know what, I like babies, maybe I should be a nanny. So I started nannying for somebody in Uxbridge. I answered an ad that said: Grandmother has temporary guardianship of grandson, needs full-time nanny on a temporary basis. So I’m like, ‘Oh, this is perfect.’ I went, I interviewed, she heard my story, and I got a little information from her that DCF was coming in to take the baby [from the birth parents] but she said, ’No, I’ll take the baby.’ So she had temporary guardianship. I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know what, I’ll be the nanny, this is awesome.’ It was only 2 weeks old.

“So everything was going OK, I was working 9 to 5. Within like a month, the grandmother said, ‘You know what, he’s not going to be able to go back to the birth parents. They’re really not in a good position to take this baby. And I really would like to have him be in a permanent home. Knowing your story, do you think that you would want to adopt him?’

“I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ Talk about bringing your work home with you. I said, ‘Yeah, let me talk to my husband.’ And it’s so funny, because Adoption | 5

“He was always a jokester, always had a big smile,” Lazzaro recalled.

“The customers loved him, especially the senior citizens. He had a good way with people, but you would never think he would end up running the town.”

Tedstone is a grandson of Thomas Terry, who owned the land upon which Hopkinton High School and the athletic fields are situated as well as what is now the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, He and his brother, Luke, had a modest upbringing, raised by their mother, Carol Terry Tedstone, who divorced when Brendan was 12. Tedstone attended high school at Keefe Tech in Framingham, graduating in 1988.

He could have been dealt a better hand of cards, but he never complained.

“Through it all my mother raised us to know right from wrong and how to make good decisions,” Tedstone said.

“I made a lot of friends in our neighborhood, who turned into lifelong friends.

We just decided to make the best of it.”

When Brian Thomas was a star for Dave Hughes’ HHS football squads in the early 1980s, Tedstone was their 11-year-old water boy.

“He was always a smart kid, very witty,” said Thomas, now the owner of Phipps Insurance Agency. “He would introduce his own brand of humor into every conversation.”

Tedstone’s trademark humor was on full display when he first announced his run for selectman three years ago.

He mockingly claimed that if elected he would “make Hopkinton great again” and that he would “build a wall and have Ashland pay for it.” Those who know Tedstone knew he was kidding.

It was just Brendan being Brendan. Not everybody understood, but Tedstone did not care.

“Initially, when Ken Clark was stepping down as fire chief, I watched with interest as our town conducted a nationwide search,” Tedstone said. “It was obvious to me and lots of others who know what is going on in Hopkinton that our best option was our own deputy chief at that time, Steve Slaman, a local guy that knows our town. I said

to myself and anyone who would listen, this is ridiculous, someone has to do something.”

Shortly after Tedstone won his first election, Slaman was appointed fire chief. He continues in that role today and is doing a great job, according to Tedstone.

While Tedstone continues to blend his comic style in almost everything he does (his email messages include “sent from my wall-mounted rotary phone”), Tedstone has surprised even his most ardent supporters with how seriously he takes his public service. He has constantly advocated for tax relief for Hopkinton’s senior citizens, especially those who are on fixed incomes and are struggling to stay in their homes. When Tedstone discusses the town’s budget and the need to increase tax revenue, amidst the crisis facing our seniors, there is no humor to be found in his comments.

“Lets face it,” he said, “the Legacy Farms thing has left the town with a mess.”

On another day Tedstone called our tax bills “a shell game.”

“On one hand we tell our residents that our tax rates will remain unchanged and then on the other we increase people’s valuations,” he said.

“I consider this to be very deceptive and absolute nonsense. Taxpayers deserve the truth.”

When he discusses the town’s monetary woes, Tedstone demonstrates that he inherited something from the Terrys: the ability to acutely assess complex financial situations while fully understanding the motives and representations of the parties involved. At a recent meeting Tedstone proposed a means of sparing seniors and disabled veterans from what otherwise will be an inevitable 35 percent increase in their water and sewer bills, all with a very straight face. Tedstone has never been afraid to say what he thinks.

“Sometimes my mouth gets me in trouble,” he said, “but I believe I am dealing with the facts and trying to be as reasonable as I can be.”

Tedstone has had some dustups, including a highly contested discussion about renaming the Board of Selectmen to what is now called the Select Board. His detractors called him sexist and out of touch. Tedstone claimed he is simply a traditionalist. When the debate escalates and the conversation gets heated, Tedstone thinks the way former construction company owner turned town official Don Wilson did: Just because you may disagree with someone on one issue should not prevent you from working together on things you agree upon.

Tedstone knew Wilson as a kid, and like most effective politicians, he knows his history. Tedstone learned much of what he knows at places like The Spoon (formerly the Golden Spoon) over the last 30 years.

Tedstone, who lives near the center of town with his wife and two children, has always been different from the rest of us. Most people don’t like public speaking. Very few could stand the commitment and pressures of elected office. How many could tolerate the verbal abuse he received as a male nurse in a prison full of murderers?

everybody always said to me, ’That’s going to be child number six.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, I’m just a nanny.’ “And they’re like, ‘No, you’re going to end up adopting him.’ And then we ended up taking him.

“And then shortly after, we found out that the grandmother took another child that was just born eight months later, same dad, because DCF again was going to come in and take the baby. So she went and grabbed the baby. Again, the grandmother tried to take care of the baby but wanted me to do some nannying for her. Same situation — she knew that they couldn’t take care of the baby, and I ended up taking him as well. So now we’re up to seven kids. The inn is full right now.”

While she never intended to have seven children, Toni felt confident she could provide the right environment for them all.

“Like Bill says, there’s no running out of love for any of these kids,” she said.

With her family one away from double digits, Toni said she has finally reached her limit.

“I really do think that I’m done,” she said. “I’m 54 years old now. To chase around a 2- and 3-year-old, I had to hire a couple of nannies myself.”

The Mahers continue to be very involved in the adoption community, speaking to prospective adoptive parents, helping with MAPP training and offering support to whomever is interested (she welcomes people emailing her at tonimaher@verizon.net). Their children join them at adoption events and sometimes speak with prospective parents themselves.

“My husband and I, we were going by the seat of our pants when we got into this,” Toni said. “We talked to a lot of people and reached out to a retired DCF attorney. We really wanted to know the ins and outs of the process.

As foster parents you don’t really know what’s going on on the other side, and you don’t really have any say in the courts or anything. It’s a tough thing to navigate by yourself. I want people to know what it happening out there.”

Toni advises those interested in adopting to stay the course despite concerns that might arise during training.

“It’s a tough course,” she said.

“They talk about everything, behaviors many foster children have — frustraters, attempted suicides, poop smeared on the walls. Yes, that does happen to some children. But it does not apply to everyone that’s in foster care. They will tell you about the worst-case child, and that scares a lot of people off.”

“If I can get them early enough, then we can stop some of the trauma that happens when they bounce from foster home to foster home,” she said.

“I talk to people about this all the time: Try to get them as young as you can.

If you can get them as infants and get them in your home, that child might be able to stay with you and have a stable environment. They need to have an attachment right away.

“Now, especially with the opiate crisis, there are so many babies being born that do not have a permanent home. It’s really a sad situation.”

As for the original child the Mahers had sought, they remain in contact with her, as they try to do with all of their children’s siblings.

“I do try to keep tabs on every single sibling they have,” Toni said. “With the twins, their sister Danielle, just [last month] we took her to a Red Sox game. It’s really nice to keep connected like that.”

Her two birth sons are now adults themselves, and Toni said they hope to become adoptive parents themselves someday — “but not this many kids,” she acknowledged. While Connor (now 24) works in IT security in Boston, Andrew (22) remains in Hopkinton, running his own landscaping and snowplowing business and helping at home.

“He’s a great big brother,” Toni said. “They adore him, and he gets a kick out of it.”

Maher said she has no regrets about the path her life has taken.

“No, never, not once,” she said. “I would have been heartbroken if I hadn’t been able to provide a home for these kids. I’m meant to do this. This is my purpose in life. I absolutely know my purpose in life was to be a mom.”

How many would take a job as a minor league hockey goon? To know Brendan Tedstone is to know that he is fearless, and he loves the action.

“I always like to make things fun, but when game time comes, there is no time for humor,” he said. “I love game time.”

Lazzaro, who has known Tedstone since the days of Ronald Reagan, said there is much more to Tedstone’s public service than being a budgetary wonk.

“When Brendan was a kid, he got to know a lot of the respected leaders

of our town, people like Cookie Kumlin and Tommy McIntyre, they did a lot for the town and they made quite an impression on Brendan. Now they’re gone and Brendan has picked up the torch.”

Summing it up, Thomas perhaps put it best: “Brendan is one of the funniest people I have ever met, but as I have watched him mature, it is clear that he cares deeply about the town.

He’s going to live and die here. He has the intelligence and empathy to understand the issues and lives of ordinary people. He gets it. We’re lucky to have him.”

Town officials detail frustration with Eversource/Hopkinton LNG

A

t the July 9 Select Board meeting, Town Manager Norman Khumalo and Town Counsel Ray Miyares updated the board on ongoing issues the town has been having with Eversource, which owns the Hopkinton LNG NEWS BRIEFS plant off Wilson Street.

Khumalo and Miyares detailed a number of run-ins with the company, which they said has been uncooperative and dismissive of town concerns.

Among the key issues: • Khumalo said Eversource has not been forthcoming or cooperative regarding safety concerns the town has about the plant, which was constructed between 1967 and 1974.

Most recently, in 2017 there was a problem — Eversource termed it a “thermal anomaly” — in one of the tanks that holds approximately 3 billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas, yet the company did not notify the town about it until last August, eight months after the fact. The tank is being emptied so that the interior can be inspected.

“The fire department does lack

the important information to develop effective emergency response plans,” Khumalo said. “Chief [Stephen] Slaman has gone to great lengths to at least enable and facilitate the conversation with LNG that would provide the town with the most relevant and pertinent public safety-related information. roadway, creating a potential hazard.

The town’s consultant has identified this as a key safety vulnerability.”

• The town wants Eversource to enter into a host community agreement, which is common when dealing with large companies in the private sector, but Eversource refuses. The town was unsuccessful when it asked the Department of Public Utilities [DPU] to force Eversource’s cooperation.

“They simply said no,” Miyares said.

Miyares said the town is appealing the DPU’s decision, and that appeal is pending before the appeals court.

“The good news is we will be able to argue our case in front of a panel of three judges at the appeals court who will certainly be challenged by the tenor of the appeal that has been filed,” Miyares said. “I think the idea that the DPU simply adopted a practice or a policy of just ignoring host community agreements and not requiring them is something that at least may give the appeals court pause. We don’t know until we actually argue the case to find out how they will be. But unlike the DPU, the appeals court is more likely to take a more neutral view of things. So we have some optimism there.”

• Charles Kadlik, the town’s building inspector, denied Eversource permits for “modifications” it would like to make to the facility due to the company failing to respond to requests about how it intends to comply with zoning requirements.

Eversource proceeded to go to the DPU and ask for a comprehensive zoning exemption, which it was granted.

Brendan Tedstone, the Select Board chair, expressed concern to Miyares about the DPU’s impartiality.

“It sounds to me, the picture that you’re painting, is that we have almost a ‘good ol’ boy’ network, that they don’t care what we say, we’re going to ignore you, then we’re going to go to the state, we’re going to go to the DPU, who’s run basically by retired execs from [Commonwealth Gas] and Eversource and NSTAR and whomever, and they’re going to side with them,” Tedstone said.

“That said, I hope that we can get a fair bite at the apple. My main concern as a selectman and as a person who lives in town is the safety aspect of it.”

• The contractor hired by Eversource to do work on town roads, United Civil, had some issues that forced DPW Director John Westerling to issue a stop work order.

“The contractor has really been a bad neighbor,” Khumalo said. “They have failed to secure the trenches [along West Main Street] several times, causing damage to automobiles or vehicles using these roadways. And in fact most recently they even dug up the wrong section of the road. Instead of digging up West Main, they dug up Lumber Street.”

Added Khumalo: “The point needs to be made that this kind of behavior creates serious public safety concerns. It also is very draining on town resources.”

• Eversource has filed a tax abatement request for the fiscal years 2014-15 through the present, with approximately $2.6 million in dispute over the six-year period. Three of the years are scheduled to be heard in front of the appellate tax board in September.

Miyares expressed strong confidence in Hopkinton’s case but noted, “It is unfortunately the practice of the appellate tax board to pick some number

Ekross introduced as new police officer Robert Ekross was formally introduced as the town’s newest police officer at the July 9 Select Board meeting, with members voting unanimously to accept his appointment.

Ekross, a native of Grafton who majored in criminal justice and graduated with high honors from Becker College, most recently served as a full-time police officer at Fitchburg State University.

Deputy Chief Joseph Bennett introduced Ekross to the board, saying: “One of the things that made Robert really stand out is during the interview process, and even if you were to look at his cover letter, he did a lot of research on the community and he really relayed how he feels he can fit in the community based on what he sees as our values that are present and represented in our social media, in our mission statement. That’s why I really believe he’ll be a fantastic fit.”

There remains one more opening on the force that the Select Board has approved to be filled this year.

Water/sewer rate increases approved At its June 25 meeting, the Select Board addressed the need for dramatic increases in resident fees over the next couple of years to maintain stability in the sewer enterprise fund, as had been discussed at the board’s prior meeting.

The fund is facing cash flow problems due in part to a decrease in sewer flow by industrial users.

“We have to do what it takes to keep the system going, but we definitely need better research and insight for new year so it’s not a big surprise to us and to all the ratepayers,” Select Board member John Coutinho said.

After a lengthy discussion that included Norman Khumalo (town manager), Tim O’Leary (town chief financial officer), Eric Carty (water and sewer manager), John Westerling (DPW director) and members of The Abrahams Group (consultants), the board decided to approve a three-tiered sewer fee rate structure. Tier 1 is up to 10 hundred cubic feet (HCF). Tier 2 is 10.1 to 80 HCF. Tier 3 is 80.1 HCF and above.

There will be a 17.5 percent increase to Tier 1 from $9.58 to $11.26 per HCF. There will be a 39.5 percent increase to Tier 2, from $9.58 to $13.36 per HCF. There will be a 42.5 percent increase to Tier 3, from $11.59 to $16.51 per HCF. There will be a $200 discount per

year for those who receive property tax exemptions from the Hopkinton Board of Assessors under clauses of Sections 17, 22, 37 and 41 of applicable state law.

The Select Board also voted to approve a 2 percent increase in the water rate for FY20.

Hayden Rowe trees out The Select Board voted June 25 to remove a tree on Hayden Rowe Street, a step that was required in order to install new utility poles to accommodate the new pavement design and the installation of the new traffic signal at the intersection with Chestnut Street.

DPW director John Westerling had called a public hearing on June 10 to address the removal of three trees as requested by Verizon, which is responsible for the installation of the new utility poles.

While there were no attendees at the public hearing, a resident reached out to Westerling to object to the removal of a town-owned Maple tree in front of 185 Hayden Rowe.

However, the board agreed that the tree needed to be taken down.

opkinton resident Marie Boyle is using both fashion and fitness to raise money and awareness about a “silent killer” of women — ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer causes more deaths each year than any other gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control, but for many women by the time they recognize the symptoms the disease has already progressed to a late stage. Symptoms of ovarian cancer can include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and frequent or urgent urination — all symptoms that could be mistaken for other issues.

Although difficult to detect, if the cancer is found at an early stage, women have a 93 percent survival rate of five years, according to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In an effort to bring about more awareness about this devastating disease, and to help raise funds for researching a cure, Boyle has spent the past six years fundraising and has raised close to $50,000 for the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at DanaFarber.

The fight is personal to Boyle, as she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2014. After being in remission for two years and eight months, Boyle was told her cancer had returned.

“Going through everything that first

time was really bad, but nothing was worse than having to tell my kids that my cancer had returned,” she said.

Boyle continues fight for herself and the thousands of other women battling this disease by continuing her mission to bring about awareness and raise funds for cancer research.

This summer, Boyle brought a little “fun” into her fundraising efforts by hosting two charity fashion shows last month. In partnership with Hopkinton’s Swoon Central and co-owners

Lisa Strain and Kathy Mazur, who is an ovarian cancer survivor herself, the events featured raffles, an auction and a fashion show featuring clothing from Swoon modeled by women who are going through cancer treatments or are cancer survivors.

“It was amazing,” Boyle said of the two sold-out events. “It was so much fun and very upbeat.”

The fashion shows, which were held at Central Public House, were held in memory of Kathy Hirst and Jacquelyn Aramburu-Grady, friends of the hosts who both recently passed away from ovarian cancer.

At the end of the shows, the women had raised close to $12,000 for ovarian cancer research.

“What’s so great about this is that 100 percent of the money goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Center,” Boyle said.

Boyle also will be joining more than 1,000 other people on Sept. 14

along Craigsville Beach in Centerville to take part in the 10th annual girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. 5K. Founded in 2009, girlygirl P.A.R.T.S (Prescreening Awareness Required To Silence) raises money and awareness for ovarian cancer research.

All proceeds raised from the girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. 5K support Dr. Ursula Matulonis, chief, Division of Gynecological Oncology, Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and her team’s efforts to detect, treat and cure ovarian cancer.

While raising funds is an important step in eradicating this disease, raising awareness is just as important, Boyle said.

“I have had people approach me saying, ‘Why hadn’t I heard of this before?’ ” Boyle said. “We need to get the information out there. Awareness and early detection is key.”

obbi Gibb can’t remember a time when she wasn’t running. Ever since she was a little girl, Gibb said running made her feel alive. The Rockport resident is now in her 70s and she continues to run every day. It’s hard to imagine the number of miles she’s run throughout her lifetime. However, it is a specific 26.2 miles that she ran more than 50 years ago that she will always remember and be remembered for.

Spirit of Italy Hopkinton resident develops homemade limoncello into business

S

peaking from inside the new warehouse in Salem, New Hampshire, his company moved into four months prior, Hopkinton resident Phil Mastroianni, founder and co-owner of Fabrizia Spirits, has to keep his voice loud, competing with the noises of bottles clinking down the assembly line and equipment loudly humming.

It wasn’t always like this, though, as he recalls when he was in the beginning stages of his company, deciding to take the risk and pursue creating his hobby into a business, in 2008.

In those almost 11 years since making the fateful step, through ups and downs and a combination of what he calls luck and naive ambition, Mastroianni was able go from taking four months to sell 160 gallons of his original product, homemade limoncello, to expanding into a canned line of beverages, selling 41,000 cans in 2018 and becoming one of the biggest producers of limoncello in the New England region.

The Fabrizia story has its roots in 2003, when Phil was a junior at Bentley University, studying abroad in Florence, Italy. He had a week off, and his father

and aunt flew out from Massachusetts to visit him. The culture shock in Italy was mind-blowing, he said, and seeing people growing and eating their own food, “I was sort of empowered of the idea you could do these things on your own.”

His father and aunt took him to a small hilltop town called Calabria, where three of his four grandparents were born. He met members of his extended family and became interested in Italian culture, particularly the idea of making his own food and beverages.

He met with his family in Italy more frequently through the years, and in the summer of 2007 while on a visit he was introduced to limoncello, which he began to make when he got back home for fun.

When his uncle Joe tried his limoncello, he remarked that it was the best limoncello he ever had, and that he should be doing that for a living. At first Mastroianni laughed it off, but the idea stuck with him and he began to take the it seriously.

Mastroianni describes limoncello as a traditional Italian liqueur, made from the zest of lemon infused with alcohol, typically as an after-dinner drink and served chilled.

“Some would work, some would watch,” he said with a laugh.

After the fourth time, he knew it was necessary to expand, and in order to do that he would have to get licensed as a liquor manufacturer, requiring him to own or rent a commercial space, which led him to New Hampshire.

his grandparents grew up (it translates to “works with hands”) — Mastroianni was still working full time as an accountant. He was first only able to get one or two days off a week, spending those days driving around to liquor stores in states where his product was available and talking to anybody who would listen.

“I would leave around 6 a.m. and not get back until 9 or 10 p.m.,” he said.

“It was really long days, but it was one of my few days to do Fabrizia, so it was like my day of happiness.”

Gradually he was able to devote more time to Fabrizia, until finally he was able to quit his day job and focus solely on his company.

Two years into the company, with Mastroianni still working full time and needing additional help, his brother, Nick, began to assist, recruiting friends to prepare and bottle the limoncello while Phil worked his other job. Nick eventually became a part owner.

“He sort of saved me in a sense,” Phil said. “I know how to make the limoncello, but he handled all the manufacturing, which is an important part. …

He’s really talented with it.”

Mastroianni — who moved to Hopkinton in 2013 after marrying Lindsey MacKay, who grew up in town — didn’t have to travel far to move into the new warehouse. He’s in the same building, just in a different space, but the move nearly tripled the amount of space he had previously.

“We did all these things to stay in that small space longer, but we were fooling ourselves, we were like ants in there,” Mastroianni said.

Once he began adding canned premade cocktails to his line of his beverages in 2015, it became necessary to move into a larger space.

The new warehouse affords him almost 6,000 square feet, compared to the previous space of 1,800 square feet.

This extra space allowed him to get extra equipment, including a 1,500-gallon stainless steel automatic mixing tank and a small walk-in freezer to store lemon juice.

The biggest addition was a lemon peeler machine that Mastroianni had imported from Italy, allowing him to import and peel the lemons in large quantities. Mastroianni said with increased business it allows him to buy bigger quantities of lemons that are Fabrizia Spirits | 13

imported from Sicily, receiving around 140,000 lemons in a shipment.

The biggest challenge for Fabrizia this year was having the relocation to the bigger warehouse space delayed due to the government shutdown in the beginning of the year, delaying them from moving in and utilizing the space for two months.

“First our small business loan got held up, that delayed the closing on the building, and then we weren’t able to get our license right away,” Mastroianni said. “It was extremely stressful because we were taking on this huge financial commitment.”

Fabrizia’s original canned beverage, which the company started producing four years ago, is called the Italian margarita. It’s comprised of lemonade, limoncello and tequila. Fabrizia recently added a second type of canned beverage to its line: Italian lemonade, made with vodka, lemonade and limoncello.

Fabrizia also added two types of liqueurs aside from the original limoncello: blood orange liqueur and limoncello made with cream.

Mastroianni still keeps an old batch of limoncello, made more than 10 years ago when he was making the drink for fun, and without the idea of turning it into a business. He could have used the batch, he said, but he decided against it, keeping it as a memento to remind him of the Fabrizia journey.

Sports Hillers shine on summer Legion teams

A

fter a run to the state title game this spring, several member of the Hopkinton High baseball team — along with a couple of alumni — are finding success on local American Legion squads and have another crack at a championship on their minds.

Tommy Ambrosone, Brendan Kelly, Stephen Simoes and Ben McKenzie, all members of the Hillers’ state final squad, joined 2018 HHS graduate Tom Leone in playing for Post 59 in Milford.

Cole Glassburn and Drew Rancatore are playing for a first-place Ashland team.

“It’s been great, the whole culture around it, the people who come out to games, it’s been a great experience,” said Leone, who is in his second summer with Milford. “I like being able to play for a team that is competing to win championships.”

Milford added Kelly, Simoes and McKenzie this summer. The latter two have found spots at the top of the Post 59 lineup and headed into the last week of the regular season in mid-July hitting above .500. Leone, who currently plays college baseball at Tufts, said having the new crop of Hillers on the team has been “awesome.”

“I loved my four years playing for the program,” he said. “To be able to get some of those guys and playing with them it’s been great and they really help our team.”

As Milford has risen to the top of the Zone 4 standings, Ashland was the last unbeaten team in Zone 5 as of July 8. Glassburn has been a starting infielder and pitcher for Post 77.

“We are really excited about the way it has been going and we are pretty confident going into the rest of the season that we are going to be able to make a deep run in the playoffs,” the recent Hopkinton graduate said. After competing for Ashland this summer, Glassburn plans to join the baseball program at Catholic University in Washington.

opkinton High School graduate Sydney MacDonald capped off her Hillers soccer career with a strong season both on the pitch and in the classroom, last month earning the Scholar AllAmerican Award presented by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

MacDonald dominated on the field, earning three straight team MVP awards and Tri-Valley AllStar honors. She was a first-team all-state selection and helped Hopkinton capture its first ever Division 2 South sectional title last fall. The Hillers advanced all the way to the state title game.

In the classroom, the Vassar-bound MacDonald earned a 4.28 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society.

“It’s not easy being a student athlete, to balance everything,” said Wayne Sygrove, Hopkinton’s coach last fall, “but from the grades she got, from the way the teachers spoke about her, she definitely made sure she took care of business off the field first, which allowed her to do her thing on the field.”

Sygrove described MacDonald as a “natural leader” and someone the rest of the team looked up to. She was a huge help to the first-year coach (who has since moved out of state).

“All the players on the team respected her, the younger players really looked up to her,” Sygrove said. “Whenever she had anything to say, everybody

listened and valued her opinions.”

MacDonald also led by example, playing the center midfield position and anchoring the Hillers on both ends of the field. Sygrove said she was very strong defensively and consistently able to win the ball and and be in the right place at the right time.

When the situation called for it, she also was willing to go upfield and support Hopkinton’s attack.

“Nobody worked harder on the field than she did,” Sygrove said.

MacDonald received a letter from the Scholar All-America committee in late June, letting her know she had been chosen. She was sent two certificates, one for her and one to display at the school, and is invited to attend the All-America ceremony next January at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland.

A total of 104 players nationwide received Scholar All-American recognition, including 40 boys and 64 girls. MacDonald is one of only two girls selected from Massachusetts.

MacDonald also found time for volunteer work, participating in the Live4Evan Run + Fun event, a Hopkinton community event raising money in support of families dealing with congenital heart defects. She helped sign up runners, hand out water and clean up after the event, Sygrove said.

She helped pass along her love of soccer to younger athletes by organizing events with Hopkinton Youth Soccer, including the Future Hillers Camp and the Columbus Day 3x3 Tournament.

Milford this year. As the host, Post 59 is guaranteed a spot in the state’s final eight, but Post 77 will have to emerge as the Zone 5 champion in order to make it to the tournament, which begins July 27 at Fino Field.

“We had three big team goals,” said Ashland manager Jake Obid. “The first is to have a better record than last year, which right now is looking pretty good. The second goal is to win the district playoffs and then win the states. The expectations are high, but everyone has been buying in.”

Obid said he has tried to model his Legion program after Hopkinton High and its coach, Steve Simoes, whose son now plays in Milford.

“Getting to the states, it’s in the back of our minds,” said Rancatore, who like Glassburn is back for his second year with Ashland. “But we still have a lot of games left in the regular season and a lot of

good teams to play.”

Despite being nagged by a hamstring injury suffered during the high school season, Rancatore has been able to contribute to the team in a designated hitter role.

“It’s been excellent,” he said of the experience with Post 77. “We have had a lot of success and the team dynamic is great. We have a lot of guys from the different towns, guys I played against during the high school season, and it’s been cool to play with them.”

And even though Milford knows it will have a chance to compete for a state title, Leone said the group is taking nothing for granted.

“We want to win the zone too, the whole aura around Milford is winning,” he said before giving a nod to the Ashland team buoyed by his fellow Hillers. “It’s good to see those guys succeed as well. I’d look forward to seeing them in the states.”

Special veterans recognition The Senior Center last month hosted a special Veterans Breakfast, honoring those who have received the Massachusetts Medal of Liberty.

The Medal of Liberty is awarded to next of kin of servicemen and women who were killed in action or died as a result of wounds received in action. Pictured are John McGill (back left), son of John B. Importance of play Research suggests that play brings joy. And it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships. On June 25, several participants played and programmed with mini-Lego robots. They used interlocking Lego bricks to build and program robots. Stephen Green of the Massachusetts First Lego League approached the Senior Center with this idea. A few of the participants expressed interest in continuing play and possibly starting up an intergenerational Lego team.

The Caregiver Support Group meets the third Thursday of the month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Registration is recommended. If you have any questions or you need care for your loved one while you attend the group, contact the Outreach Department at 508-497-9730.

The World of Dolls

Thursday, July 18, 12:30 p.m.

Janice McIntyre, owner of Jenny Baby’s Doll Hospital in Hopkinton, will share the history of dolls with a display of collectible and antique dolls from the 1800s through modern day.

Recently featured on “Chronicle,” she will provide information on the hospital where sick and injured dolls and other beloved toys go to recover, recuperate or relax. Attendees will discover a variety of clothing styles and hairstyles from throughout the centuries as well as how to identify a doll and look for markings.

“The fishing on the lake is wonderful,” MacConnell said. “The water is healthy, so the fishing is healthy.”

Tragically, there were two recent drownings on Lake Maspenock within 10 months of each other. A 17-yearold drowned during last September’s Labor Day weekend near the dam, and in June a 9-year-old drowned at Sandy Beach. The LMPA has been working with public safety officials and Hopkinton’s Parks and Recreation Department to brainstorm ideas concerning water safety.

body of water bound by the communities of Hopkinton, Upton and Milford has been creating special memories for so many residing on or near the lake. Families and individuals have enjoyed countless hours of swimming, boating and fishing throughout the 250-acre property that is centered around Lake Maspenock. And members of the Lake Maspenock Preservation Association (LMPA) have been helping to uphold all that is good about the lake.

“Our mission is to preserve and protect the lake and watershed and create a sense of community, said LMPA president Drew Logan.

By that, Logan means raising awareness and educating residents about the lake’s water quality, encouraging safety and providing fun programs for many to enjoy.

A big focus of the nonprofit association has been its water testing that is

Another initiative the LMPA is involved in is the lake’s weed control.

Members of the association sit on a Weed Management and Control Advisory Group. Posted on the association’s website (LMPA.org) is educational material for the community concerning treatment resources and weed management guidelines that helps preserves the lake’s water.

The group also organizes an annual spring cleanup day when volunteers walk throughout the lake’s property picking up trash to keep the area looking its best.

LMPA treasurer Tina MacConnell said the wildlife around the lake is something to see and includes beautiful cranes, turtles and of course the famous eagle whose nest is located on Crocket Road. And don’t forget about the mul-

The LMPA also sponsors an annual July 4 boat parade that has been a longtime tradition around the lake. In addition, a cornhole tournament (July 27) and a chili cookoff/tailgate event are on the association’s calendar of upcoming events.

Madeleine McBride

Charles F. Kehoe, Jr., 90, husband of Mary (Kropf) Kehoe, died June 19 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut. Charles was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Korean War. Born April 3, 1929, in Hartford, son of the late Charles F., Sr., and Ruth (Kenton) Kehoe, he had lived in Vernon, Connecticut, many years before moving to Glastonbury, Connecticut, three years ago. Prior to his retirement he worked for SNET. He was a member of the American Legion Post 14 in Vernon and loved fixing things and spending time at Bashan Lake in East Haddam.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Charles F. Kehoe, III of East Granby, Connecticut, and Daniel Kehoe of Coventry, Connecticut, three daughters and their husbands, Doreen Kehoe and Roger Herrick of North Carolina, Kathleen and Michael Hutchinson of Hopkinton, and Sharon and Gary Trombley of East Haddam, Connecticut, a brother, Donald Kehoe of Norwalk, Connecticut, a sister, Catherine Dillon of Harwich, and 10 grandchildren, Jessica Beckley, Emily Jordan, Samantha and Emma Trombley, Zachary Hutchinson, Jeremy, Caitlin, Bhrighde and Tessa and Rhiannon Kehoe. He was predeceased by a sister, Isabel Bride.

Charles’s family would like to offer special thanks to his wonderful caregivers at Middlesex Hospital.

Funeral service was held June 24 in the Mulryan Funeral Home in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Burial with military honors followed in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, Connecticut. Madeleine Frances McBride, 94, of Hopkinton, passed a w a y peacefully on June 11 a t t h e Soldiers’ Home in

Holyoke.

Madeleine, known as “Babe” to friends and family, was born and raised on Grove Street in Hopkinton.

She was one of the first students to attend Center School when it opened, and was a graduate of Hopkinton High School. Babe earned her B.S. and became a registered nurse while living in Florida. She served in the Korean War as a flight nurse for the U.S. Air Force, was promoted to captain and was called back to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. She spent several years doing private duty nursing in Miami before returning to Hopkinton in the 1980s to help care for her parents, Frank and Madeleine McBride. She is survived by her brother, Richard “Mike” McBride of Hopkinton and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Paul, of Hopkinton.

Madeleine enjoyed living at Golden Pond in Hopkinton for several years before moving to the Soldiers’ Home in 2017, where she was cared for with dignity and respect.

Jeffrey Gordon Donahue, 55, of Hopkinton, passed away July 4. He was born in R o c h e s t e r, New York, to Jean (Lacava) of West Henrietta, New York, and the late Gordon Donahue. He was the husband of 29 years to the love of his life, Amy (Hollenbeck) Donahue.

First and foremost, Jeffrey loved his family and spending time with them. He was an amazing husband, father, brother and friend. He liked to travel and particularly enjoyed his time in Italy. Jeffrey cherished his time when the family went camping on Cape Cod. He also loved to play hockey and baseball.

June 18

12:04 a.m. A caller reported hearing three gunshots on Ash Street, near Center School. Officers Brian Sanchioni, Jay Deiana and Ryan Polselli responded and spoke to a homeowner in the area, who heard nothing. The officers found all quiet upon their arrival.

11:47 a.m. A DiCarlo Road resident reported losing her driver’s license and wanted it logged. She called back and stated someone mailed the license to her.

12:36 p.m. Officer Benjamin Stickney met with the middle school principal, a student and the student’s parents and assisted them with an incident.

1:05 p.m. A Downey Street resident reported someone broke in to her house in the morning. Officers Stephen Buckley, Benjamin Stickney and Sergeant Arthur Schofield responded and a report was to follow.

2:24 p.m. A walk-in reported there were a bunch of youths hanging out at the Town Common on Main Street. Officers Stephen Buckley and Benjamin Stickney responded and reported the group had dispersed.

7:36 a.m. A John Matthew Road caller reported her mailbox was hit by a vehicle overnight and destroyed. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and took a report.

12:30 p.m. Officer Benjamin Stickney responded to a juvenile assault at the middle school on Hayden Rowe Street.

12:44 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious male on Cedar Street with lowhanging pants, carrying beer bottles.

2:02 p.m. A caller reported a possible check scam. Sergeant Arthur Schofield spoke with the caller and reported no pertinent information was given to the scammers. The caller was advised on how to prevent future fraud.

2:43 p.m. A caller reported larceny by her contractor. Sergeant Arthur Schofield spoke with the caller and took a report.

7:16 p.m. A Coburn Road resident reported a computer scam. Officer Pres-

ton Mucciarone responded and a report was to follow.

Whitehall vehicle rescue Members of the Hopkinton Police Department, Hopkinton Fire Department, Fire District 14 Dive Rescue Team (including personnel from Westborough and Ashland) and Massachusetts Environmental Police were called to assist with the investigation and recovery of a vehicle that went down the Whitehall State Park boat ramp and into the lake on June 23. The driver of the vehicle escaped without injury, police reported.

12:55 p.m. A caller reported finding a power drill in the roadway of Spring Street. The information was logged.

2:17 p.m. A caller reported an erratic operator on Huckleberry Road. Officer

John Corridan responded and located the vehicle at a residence and reported a father stated his son has his learner’s permit and was learning how to drive.

3:08 p.m. A walk-in handed in a cell phone that he found in the State Park on Cedar Street. The owner was contacted for pickup.

4:36 p.m. A caller reported an animal, possibly a raccoon, was hit by a vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street and was lying on

the ground. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded and notified the animal control officer and the Highway Department.

6:03 p.m. A walk-in reported usage of his Venmo account by his son to purchase vaping marijuana. Officer Moira McGaffigan advised the parent to shut off access to the Venmo account.

6:42 p.m. Officer Jay Deiana removed an injured snake from the roadway of Wood Street.

ARRESTS June 22

8:33 p.m. A caller reported an erratic operator driving on the sidewalk on Ash Street. Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officers Brian Sanchioni and Benjamin Stickney responded and subsequently arrested Kristina A. Armstrong, 50, of 61 Front Street and charged her with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and drinking alcohol from an open container.

June 23

2:05 a.m. Officer Preston Mucciarone conducted a motor vehicle stop on Hayden Rowe Street and Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Brian Sanchioni responded as backup. Gabriel B. Torres, 28, of 178 Winch Street, Framingham, was arrested and charged with OUI liquor, marked lanes violation, speeding in violation special regulation, and possession of Class B substance.

12:31 a.m. Officer Preston Mucciarone checked on a motor vehicle on West Main Street, and officer Ryan Polselli and Sergeant William Burchard responded as backup. Two individuals were arrested on narcotics violations.

Sonya Atone, 30, of 58 Pleasant St., Ludlow, Vermont, was charged with possession of Class A substance. Ethan T. Pinsonneault, 22, of 81 Elm St., Barre, Vermont, was charged with possession of Class A substance and false name or social security number at booking.

1:32 a.m. A caller complained of two males walking on Hayden Rowe Street blasting music. Sergeant Matthew McNeil and Officer Brendon Lyver responded and checked the area with a negative find.

8:11 a.m. Sergeant Scott van Raalten and Officer Matthew Santoro responded to a motor vehicle accident on East Main Street. An ambulance transported one person to the hospital. A report was to follow.

1:42 p.m. Officer John Corridan issued two parking citations on West Main Street.

4:22 p.m. A caller reported finding a wallet belonging to a Hopkinton resident at Shopper’s World in Framingham. The owner was contacted and arrangements were made for pickup.

5:24 p.m. A Kimball Road resident away on vacation reported seeing someone on her property via video, and then the camera disconnected. Officers Jay Deiana and Moira McGaffigan responded and checked the area and found all secure.

7:09 p.m. A caller reported that two hours earlier, while she was at Lake Maspenock on Wood Street, a male walked out of the woods pulling up his pants after defecating. She wanted the incident logged.

7:56 p.m. A Chestnut Street resident reported a suspicious male dressed all in black who walked up his driveway twice.

Officers Jay Deiana and Moira McGaffigan responded and checked the area with a negative find.

10:57 p.m. An Oakhurst Road caller complained of someone setting off fireworks into her yard. Officer Ryan Polselli responded and found all quiet.

June 21

10:22 a.m. A caller reported a vehicle drove through the flashing yellow pedestrian light on Main Street. The caller followed the vehicle to the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot on West Main street. Officer Matthew Santoro responded and spoke with the operator.

1:43 p.m. An Edge Hill Road resident reported her son gave personal information to a scammer. Officer Matthew Santoro responded and a report was to follow.

5:53 p.m. The Plympton Police Department reported the unauthorized use of a vehicle by a Freedom Way resident. Officers Brian Sanchioni and Benjamin Stickney checked and located the vehicle and notified the Plympton Police Department.

6:04 p.m. Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officers Brian Sanchioni and Benjamin Stickney responded to a motor vehicle accident involving air bag deployment after the vehicle hit a pole on Ash Street. A tow truck was requested.

No injuries were reported. A report was to follow.

9:57 p.m. A caller complained of fireworks being set off on Fruit Street.

Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and found all quiet.

11:34 p.m. A Knoll Road resident reported returning home and finding fresh blood drops on her floor. No broken windows or anything out of the ordinary was found. Officers Benjamin Stickney and Brian Sanchioni responded and reported the blood drops were related to the family hamster that was found in the shower.

11:36 a.m. Officer Stephen Buckley responded to a report of stolen property

on West Main Street. A report was to follow.

2:31 p.m. A walk-in found a dog running in traffic on School Street and attempted to return it to its owner but nobody was home. Officer Benjamin Stickney assisted in returning the dog to the owner.

9:58 a.m. A caller complained of noise from motorbikes and fireworks behind Center School on Ash Street and requested extra checks of the area. The caller also stated trash has been left behind the school.

7:56 a.m. A caller reported being videotaped by a man while she was out running on Granite Street. The man was speeding up and down the street and followed her to her house. Sergeant Arthur Schofield responded and the vehicle was gone upon his arrival. He spoke with the reporting person and took a report.

9:13 a.m. A walk-in reported finding a pug on Maple Street. The owner called at the same time to report a missing dog.

The owner subsequently went to the station to pick up the dog.

10:01 a.m. Officer Matthew Santoro issued a parking violation on Freedom Way for parking in a handicap spot without a placard.

11:34 a.m. A caller reported losing his wallet and wanted the incident logged.

8:38 a.m. A caller complained of construction vehicles taking up a lane of traffic on Spring Street and causing an obstruction. Officer John Corridan responded and reported crews were unloading modular homes and would move as soon as they finish unloading.

12:25 p.m. A Wedgewood Drive resident out walking a dog was approached by a young male alleging he was hired to clean a yard before an open house.

The caller denied the hiring of the landscaper. Officer John Corridan responded and spoke with the man, who was at the wrong address.

2:28 p.m. A motorist on Interstate 495 reported he was behind a driver with whom he was involved in a road rage incident on West Main Street prior to getting on the highway. The caller stated he beeped at the other driver at a green light, and that driver exited his car and proceeded to punch the caller’s truck, then got back into his vehicle and drove onto the highway. The State Police were notified.

10:03 a.m. A Davenport Lane caller reported two dogs wandering loose in the neighborhood. She had them in her garage. The animal control officer was contacted.

10:45 a.m. A Walcott Valley resident reported it appears that someone attempted to pry the back slider door open at his house. Officer Matthew Santoro responded and viewed the visible pry marks. No entry was gained. A report was to follow.

1:00 p.m. Officer Matthew Santoro was flagged down by a motorist on Hayden Rowe Street who reported another motorist threw a rock at her vehicle. Officer Santoro and Sergeant Arthur Schofield took a report.

2:16 p.m. A walk-in reported attempted fraud on an elderly woman’s property. No personal information was shared. The caller wanted others to be aware of this new real estate scam. The information was passed on to detectives.

11:13 p.m. A Teresa Road caller complained of noise at a neighbor’s house.

Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officers Brian Sanchioni and Brendon Lyver responded and requested the assistance of the Holliston Police Department after youths were found running away into the woods.

Complaint applications were issued for furnishing alcohol to persons under 21 and keeping a disorderly house.

11:16 p.m. Officer Brian Sanchioni assisted with K-9 deployment to search for two individuals in the woods on Teresa Road. The individuals were found. Additionally, a motor vehicle stop was conducted on Teresa Road. A report was to follow.

3:52 p.m. A walk-in reported a stolen bike. Officer Brian Sanchioni assisted.

7:24 p.m. Multiple calls were received about a vehicle on fire in a Main Street parking lot. Officers Benjamin Stickney, Brian Sanchioni and Jay Deiana responded along with the Fire Department. The fire was extinguished and the vehicle was towed. No injuries were reported.

9:36 p.m. A Clinton Street caller complained of music blaring from speakers in the area. Officers Jay Deiana and Brian Sanchioni responded and found the music coming from the Faith Community Church on East Main Street. The staff was advised to turn down the volume.

9:37 a.m. A runner on Greystone Lane reported two boxers followed her home. Sergeant Timothy Brennan responded and assisted the animal control officer in locating the owner.

11:27 a.m. A State Park employee dropped off two unclaimed licenses that he found at the State Park. The owners were contacted.

1:19 p.m. An Amherst Road caller reported a vehicle had been parked in front of his house since the prior day. The license plate came back to a neighbor on Lakeshore Drive.

8:23 p.m. A caller reported an electrical fire and explosion on Front Street after a tree branch fell on primary wires and blew a fuse. Officers Philip Powers and Moira McGaffigan responded along with the Fire Department, and Eversource was contacted. No hazard was present.

9:29 p.m. A caller reported finding a large hunting knife in the roadway of Ash Street. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded and recovered the knife.

10:02 p.m. A caller reported witnessing an intoxicated person drive onto Constitution Court and throw an empty bottle against the building. Officers Preston Mucciarone and Brian Sanchioni responded and knocked on a door, but no one answered.

1:09 a.m. A Davis Road walk-in complained of noise in the neighborhood.

10:40 a.m. A walk-in handed in a wallet found on West Main Street.

12:14 a.m. Sergeant Arthur Schofield checked on a motor vehicle parked on Rafferty Road and located the owner down by the water. He was advised to move along.

7:56 a.m. An East Street caller reported someone was trespassing on property, as a small fire was started the night before down by the bathhouse. Officer Philip Powers responded and reported it appeared a small fire was started from a discarded cigarette.

10:37 a.m. Officer Jay Deiana issued four parking citations on Lakeshore Drive.

12:20 p.m. A walk-in reported losing his keys on the Town Common during the Horribles Parade and wanted the incident logged.

12:55 p.m. A Connelly Hill Road resident reported finding an empty chocolate milk bottle in her mailbox and wanted the incident logged.

2:15 p.m. Officer Benjamin Stickney checked on two males sitting on the side of the roadway of Wood Street. All was OK, they were working down the street and were relaxing in a shady spot.
