Timlin Event continues race for ALS cure TRAFFIC ADVISORY The Sharon Timlin 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, at Hopkinton High School and is followed by family fun activities behind the school. If you are driving in the area that morning, be aware that traffic will be heavy. A section of Hayden Rowe Street (Route 85) from Grove Street to Chestnut Street will be closed for approximately 30 minutes, starting at 8:25 a.m. Police will be on site to redirect traffic. Parking at the school complex is limited. Attendees should allow extra time and park on side streets, car pool or use the event’s free bike valet, which is available from 7:30 a.m. until noon.

he death of a 9-year-old boy who drowned in Lake Maspenock on June 2 was a shock to the Hopkinton community. In the aftermath, the town began the process of providing counseling and other support services as well as looking for ways to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring. Hopkinton’s Department of Youth and Family Services partnered with Riverside Trauma Center to offer an evening of support and discussion on June 5 at the Senior Center. Children are considered the most vulnerable, especially when the victim is so young. Although Jorge Santiago was not from Hopkinton, the fact that the incident happened at a popular and familiar spot for local families obviously hits home. Among Riverside’s advice for parents: Listen to your children and encourage them to come to you with any questions or concerns. Do your best to manage your own anxiety and maintain routines (mealtimes, bedtime rituals, etc.) to help children retain some sense of control. Watch for behavior changes, including nightmares, insomnia or bedwetting. For older children, use the situation as a teachable moment, discussing ways to avoid such a tragedy or how they can help someone who is more deeply affected by it. Meanwhile, the Parks and Recreation Commission, which had a previously scheduled meeting on June 5, discussed what measures could be taken to make the area safer. Parks and Rec staffs the beach with a lifeguard from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., but those shifts don’t start until after the town’s school year ends in late June.
