Focus on mental health Rosenberg’s new organization aims to make difference

opkinton resident Abbie Rosenberg is determined to make a difference when it comes to mental health awareness. Rosenberg, a nurse practitioner, psychotherapist and psychopharmacologist, is the founder and executive director of Mental Health Collaborative, Inc., a new nonprofit organization whose mission is to build resilient communities through mental health education and awareness.

Rosenberg’s crusade was spurred by a heartbreaking event that profoundly affected her. She was working with a man who was suffering from depression and anxiety. With her help, he made great strides and even became a mental health advocate himself.

Eventually, he moved away. However, several years ago, Rosenberg received the news that he took his own life. She also learned the man left her money in Collaborative | 7

reyhound Friends is out of the proverbial doghouse, but the town’s Select Board made it clear that the organization is on a short leash as it returns to the business of saving dogs.

The kennel, located on Saddle Hill Road, has been closed since early 2017, when the state issued a cease-and-desist order and the town followed by revoking its license.

Following a turnover of leadership — although critics say the turnover was not as complete as it should have been — Greyhound Friends was issued a new license by the town last month, Greyhound Friends | 6

eading into late September there were no signs that the curfew on townsponsored outdoor evening activities would end anytime soon. The EEE threat continued to be a serious concern, with another round of aerial mosquito spraying coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources in mid-September. he first day of kindergarten in Hopkinton was Aug. 29, and perhaps no child was more excited for that day than Brody McDermott.

After two years of treatment for leukemia, Brody was declared cancer-free in early July.

During some of his treatment, Brody’s interactions with other children had to be limited, as his immune system was compromised.

“I think that was bigger for him than anything else, in his mind,” said Brody’s mother, Lindsay, “He didn’t even say goodbye the first day. He just ran on the bus and he was gone. He loves it. I would

say it’s bigger for him than meeting the athletes. My older kids were like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re meeting [Red Sox star] Mookie Betts!’ For him it was, ‘I’m going to get the bus and ride to kindergarten!’ He just wanted to be around other kids.”

The journey to that bus ride was a long and arduous one, not just for Brody but for his entire family.

Brody was just 3 years old when Lindsay, a single mother of five, took her youngest to Milford Regional Medical Center when he showed symptoms of strep throat that would not go away.

Blood tests determined abnormalities, and Lindsay and Brody soon were at Children’s Hospital in Boston, where they received the diagnosis: a form of cancer called B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL).

“When you finally actually hear them say it, it’s like the floor drops out underneath you,” Lindsay said. “You don’t know where you are or what you’re doing or what life is going to be like.

“For me, having lost my mom to cancer when I was young, I think it was even worse. It was probably the worst moment of my whole life.”

Complaint about spraying notification The purpose of this letter is not to add to the debate of whether aerial spraying in Hopkinton was justified. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I question the reasoning behind introducing a toxin to all of Hopkinton (including watershed areas) in the face of only four cases of EEE in all of Massachusetts, and none in Hopkinton. In addition, why so late in the season when nighttime temperatures go down into the 50s and mosquitos leave us for the colder months? That discussion will have to wait until next year.

In any event, my complaint today is with the complete failure of the officials of this town to notify the residents of LETTERS TO Hopkinton. In the past, we received notice of scheduled sprayTHE EDITOR ing (and when it involved ground spraying we could opt out simply by putting up paper plates on the edge of our properties with the words “no spray.”) This year, with aerial spraying and, therefore, no ability to opt out, we received no notice whatsoever. (In addition to putting up the plates, a form filed with the state was a futile gesture.) When my wife called various officials in town hall, she received no information or incorrect information.

How many of our residents don’t even know that spraying occurred August 26 and 27? Some notice would have allowed us to cover or shelter vegetable and other plants, pets and livestock, and close windows to protect ourselves. (I guess there are no more organic gardens in all of Hopkinton. We have lived in Hopkinton for over 37 years and have never used herbicides or pesticides on our property — until now.)

Every member of the Board of Selectmen, Board of Health and the Town Manager should resign or be fired. The first obligation of government is to protect us, or at least give us the tools to protect ourselves. All officials of the Town of Hopkinton have failed miserably in this duty. Shame on you all.

Trails should be stone dust [Recently] I rode my road bike (skinny-tire 10-speed) the entire length of the completed portions of the Upper Charles Trail, from the Hopkinton-Milford town line through Milford, then through Holliston to the Sherborn border. I didn’t think my bike would do well on the unpaved, stone dust Holliston portion, but it was pretty much the same as riding on Milford’s pavement.

I mention this because there’s a push to make Hopkinton’s portion of the Upper Charles Trail a paved path, in part to accommodate road bikes. I’d like to see it be a stone dust trail instead, for a number of reasons. Stone dust is cheaper to build (about one-third the cost of pavement) and maintain, it’s perfectly fine for strollers, wheelchairs and all types of bicycles, and it’s easier on joints and muscles for walkers, runners and horses (and even dogs!). Stone dust is also a permeable surface, allowing rainwater to filter through to the ground below. Yes, there is permeable pavement, but it requires annual vacuuming (yes, vacuuming) to maintain its permeability. Stone dust surfaces can be ADA-compliant, and rail-to-trail grants do allow for stone dust surfaces (Danvers, Groton, and Swampscott have all received DCR funding for stone dust trails).

Finally, a stone dust trail fits in better with the natural surroundings it passes through. A paved path looks like a road. Personally I’d rather walk on a trail than a road, and I’m not alone in this opinion. In a straw poll of trail users (hikers, bikers, horse riders, etc.) at a 2017 meeting run by the Upper Charles Trail Committee, the participants overwhelmingly favored a stone dust surface.

Hopkinton currently has one small completed portion of the Upper Charles Trail, the Center Trail. It has a stone dust surface, which cannot be paved (conservation restrictions). Work is close to starting on additional parts of the trail, and it just makes sense for any new trails to also be stone dust so when they are eventually connected, there’s a consistency to the town’s trail system.

Scouts to the rescue I knew I had to get a dumpster to clean up my house and garage after years of living here in Hopkinton. I had no idea how I was going to get this accomplished. I needed to find a few bodies with muscles to help me get this done. My neighbor suggested asking the Boy Scouts in Hopkinton. So I did just that and called a scoutmaster. He said they would be delighted to help out.

We settled on a date to get together, and lo and behold, about six young men showed up with two adult assistant scoutmasters. They went right to work and carried furniture, articles, a large rug, a twin bed, a heavy office desk from the house. They nearly cleaned and swept the whole two-car garage for me. The boys were wonderful and very polite and ready to work in an instant when asked to do something by the assistant scoutmasters. They filled that dumpster in just under two hours. The Hopkinton Scouts are terrific!

Police officers OK’d for retirement The saga of the three Hopkinton police officers who went on leave at the same time in 2017 with work-related injuries appears to be nearing an end, as the Middlesex County Retirement Board approved all three for accidental disability retirement.

Peter Booth, Linda Higgins NEWS BRIEFS and John Moran have been on leave since July 24, 2017.

Hopkinton Police Chief Edward Lee filed involuntary accident disability retirement applications on behalf of Booth, 48, and Moran, 41, while Higgins, 50, filed her own application.

The three officers had filed a griev-

ance last year seeking proper injury pay. Shortly thereafter, Lee sent letters to the officers’ hometowns indicating their firearms licenses were suspended due to “post-traumatic stress related to injuries incurred while on duty.”

The officers responded by suing the town and Lee in February. Two of the suits were dropped, but Moran’s was still pending as of early September. The town was working on settlements with them.

Members of the Select Board and Planning Board voted in Moran over Smriti Choudhury, Mike McNamara and Mary Arnaut, who all received some support.

Moran, a 40-year Hopkinton resident, worked for the Southborough Police Department for more than three decades, culminating with a stint as police chief before she retired in 2013.

She also has volunteered in town for many years, most recently with the Upper Charles Trail Committee.

She replaces Patrick Atwell, who was elected in May but resigned due to a job change. Moran’s term will expire next year.

The Select Board also announced three appointments: Cynthia Esthimer to the Trail Coordination and Management Committee, Ken Weismantel to the Community Preservation Committee, and Ed Harrow to the Open Space Preservation Commission (Conservation Commission Representative).

The owner of the Vin Bin at 22 South St. appeared before the Select Board on Sept. 10 to discuss an alleged violation from June when alcohol was sold to a person under 21 who turned out to be an agent from the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC).

Rick Lombardi acknowledged the violation and explained that an employee who normally works in another department was filling in at the cash register at the time of the transaction.

He said the employee was fired that evening.

“We take this very seriously,” Lombardi said. “We have four locations, we’ve been in business 15 years.

This does not happen to us. We don’t consider ourselves the type of stores where underage drinkers target, so it was sort of shocking and stunning to us.”

Eagle Scout recognized Will Dionne was recognized at the Sept. 10 Select Board meeting for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Dionne, a Hopkinton High School senior, worked with Friends of Whitehall president Peter Regan to produce a brochure addressing the danger of phosphates that can suffocate the oxygen in the lake, leading to numerous issues. Dionne then formed a group, primarily consisting of fellow Boy Scouts, to go door to door to explain and discuss the issue with homeowners in the lake area.

“It’s an excellent idea and a great project for the community,” Select Board member Brian Herr said.

DCR warns of cyanobacteria at State Park The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced in late August that there was a cyanobacteria bloom in the Upper Hopkinton Reservoir at the State Park, including the beach area. DCR put up signs warning that people and pets should not have contact with the water.

The water was to be retested to determine when the cyanobacteria levels returned to within acceptable limits per Department of Health regulations.

CPC accepts funding applications The Hopkinton Community Preservation Committee is accepting project funding applications for the fiscal year 2021.

Full applications should be submitted to the committee by Sept. 24 for review during the Sept. 26 meeting.

Projects allowable under the Community Preservation Act include the creation and preservation of open space, the preservation of historic sites, the creation and preservation of affordable housing and the creation and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities.

“No matter what they tell you about statistics, you never hear them,” she said.

“It’s always ‘cancer.’ It’s a scary, scary word to hear, especially when it has to do with your child, and also a 3-year-old.”

Lindsay and Brody lived in Boston for a month while Brody had intense daily treatment — primarily high doses of steroids and chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, Brady’s brother, Conor (now a high school freshman), and three sisters, Taylor (an eighth-grader), Madison (a fourth-grader) and Piper (a secondgrader), stayed with their grandmother and relied on the kindness of the community.

“It was tough to be away from them, but we had so many people in town step up and provide meals — tons of meals — and do small tasks for the kids or drive them all over the place, having playdates to watch the kids, or stop by and walk the dog every day,” said Lindsay. “Just incredible, incredible support from everyone.

The schools were unbelievable with my other kids, watching over them, providing support for them. It was really beautiful, actually. It was people we knew, but also a lot of people we had no idea who they were.”

To make things more challenging, last year Lindsay broke her back, forcing her

to rely on friends for even more assistance.

“I’m not somebody who asks for help,” said Lindsay, a former teacher at Elmwood School who as a Hopkinton Library Foundation board member helped raise funds to build the new library. “That was a big thing to reach out and take support from people. I’ve always been somebody who people can lean on. So this was really difficult.”

Earlier this month, the family had a community gathering to celebrate Brody being cancer-free, and to acknowledge September as National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Some 180 people turned out, including members of Hopkinton’s Police and Fire Departments.

The police had already a special place in the McDermotts’ hearts, as they stepped up with much-needed financial support via the Cops for Kids with Cancer charity early in the process.

Numerous other organizations, such as One Mission out of Westborough, also came through with support of various kinds — financial, physical, emotional, educational, etc. Late next month, the entire McDermott family is headed to Disney World courtesy of the Make-AWish Foundation.

Meanwhile, the McDermotts finally are able to settle in to their new normal.

chemo or steroids or when they’re going to Boston — they do have monthly visits for blood tests — so there still is some adjusting.

“Now he gets it more,” Lindsay said.

“He understands he has cancer — or had cancer — but back then it was, ‘We’re putting you through this thing.’ That was really hard for him. And then it became his norm. He doesn’t remember life without cancer.”

Lindsay also noticed the family becoming closer after surviving the ordeal together.

“We have a family bond that’s even tighter,” she said. “It was really difficult on them to fear that they would lose their brother. So maybe now they worry about

each other more. We go to a lot more events as a family together. They support each other in sports and that type of thing.

We’re a really close-knit family.”

“There’s so many people in this town who want to help,” Lindsay said. “It was really moving to see. We still get letters, people running by, driving by who leave notes on my windshield saying that it brightened their day, it motivated them.

It really kind of gives you feeling that you’re attached to humanity. You’re not alone. And it wasn’t for nothing that he went through it.”

Town allows Greyhound Friends to move forward Hopkinton resident Beth Malloy, who organized a citizens petition that led to a Sept. 10 public hearing, expressed frustration with Greyhound Friends leadership and requested a revocation of the organization’s license.

and the Department of Agricultural Resources lifted its cease-and-desist order two weeks later, after the kennel passed another round of inspections that proved it had made the required physical alterations and improvements.

However, a citizens petition organized by resident Beth Malloy led to a public hearing on Sept. 10.

Malloy accused Greyhound Friends of misleading the town in its license renewal application and failing to accept responsibility for previous mistakes.

She said it’s “past ridiculous” that the organization is getting yet another chance.

“Due to these misstatements and misrepresentations in the kennel license application letter, in addition to the decades of animal welfare violations and poor decision-making by this organization, we feel that the kennel license should be revoked,” Malloy told the Select Board.

Malloy called for the dismissal of new kennel manager Terri Shepard, who has been a volunteer at Greyhound Friends for many years and served on the organization’s board shortly before the kennel’s closing in 2017.

“We believe if they were ever to get out from under the shadow of animal neglect they will need to get rid of these people who stood silently by while this happened,” Malloy said.

needed changes,” Shepard told the Select Board. “When the kennel closed in 2017 until now I have worked with the board in collaboration with authorities and outside professionals to identify every mistake, problem and infraction, analyze what went wrong and create solutions both physically and procedurally to be able to operate correctly in the future.”

Shepard said the main issues occurred when the kennel decided to accept different breeds and took in more dogs than it could handle.

“There were too many dogs,” she said. “There was not enough staff.

Ultimately, the Select Board decided not to revoke the license, but it placed two conditions on the organization.

The first is that no board member who served prior to Greyhound Friends’ closure in 2017 can return to the board without the prior approval of the Select Board.

The second is that Greyhound Friends must take all reasonable steps to prevent Coleman from being present on the kennel property, including taking legal action if necessary.

Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone also warned Greyhound Friends that it was “going to be under a microscope” and would be dealt with harshly if new violations were discovered.

“Your name is not gold in the dogloving community,” he said. “And it’s up to you to change it. And it’s up to us as a board to monitor it, it’s up to us as a town to monitor it. … You’re up against it, if you’re up for the challenge.”

Mental Health Collaborative seeks to make impact in community “I think it’s social media, it’s stress, it’s pressure,” Rosenberg said about some of the drivers behind the rise. “It’s not always easy to talk about because it’s not black and white.”

In addition, 46 percent of U.S. adults will experience a mental illness during their lifetime. While some strides have been made in speaking out about the issue, Rosenberg says more can be done.

So, after a year’s worth of research, Rosenberg identified two critical needs: a shortage of mental health providers and a lack of education. Through addi-

On the first Friday of each month Hopkinton veterans meet for breakfast at the Senior Center, which has been hosting the event since not long after the creation of the building in 2006.

Though the Veterans Breakfast serves in providing a free meal, it also helps veterans of the town connect and catch up with one another.

tional research, multiple meetings and consultations with professionals, Mental Health Collaborative, Inc. (MHC), has come to fruition.

By utilizing an evidence-based program as its foundation, MHC aims to bring mental health literacy to as many people as the organization can reach.

Rosenberg explained that just like English literacy and general health literacy are taught, mental health literacy is just as important.

MHC’s mental health literacy program is focused on four major components, including understanding how to optimize and maintain good mental health, understanding mental health disorders and their treatments, decreasing the stigma associated with mental

illness, and increasing resources and help for individuals.

For now, Rosenberg, along with MHC’s Board of Directors, including Jean Bertschmann, Ellie Winthrop, Kelly Karp and Lee Burns, are focusing their efforts on the Hopkinton community with the hopes of expanding the program to other communities in the future. MHC plans to initially implement its programs in various Hopkinton-based organizations and the schools, focusing on the middle and high schools to start.

“The Hopkinton schools have been very receptive,” said Rosenberg, a mother of two college-age sons who is well known in town for founding and directing the popular Sharon Timlin Memorial Road Race.

Currently, MHC is partnering with Hopkinton Youth and Family Services to conduct a mental health needs assessment to gain a better understanding of the needs of the community. Paul Flaxman, who works for Boston Research Group and who raised his family in Hopkinton, donated his time and knowledge concerning the assessment as a way to give back to the community.

MHC is asking Hopkinton residents 18 and older to take the brief, anonymous survey at survey.gazelleglobal. com/MentalHealthCollaborative. The survey will be available online from Sept. 12 through Oct. 5.

s Hopkinton residents continue to see their hometown’s commercial development grow, the members of the Hopkinton Area Land Trust (HALT) continue to make certain the town’s beautiful, open space properties are preserved, protected and conserved for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.

The nonprofit organization began nearly 25 years ago when a group of five Hopkinton residents sat around co-founder David Goldman’s kitchen table to discuss a vision that would protect the town’s open space as well as provide passive recreation activities for the community.

Today, that vision has come full circle with HALT overseeing more than 1,000 acres of land containing 15 miles of trails throughout the town.

Incoming HALT president Morrie Gasser explained that the nonprofit organization doesn’t purchase land, but instead land is either donated by a landowner, or the landowner grants the Land Trust a conservation restriction on his or her property but also retains possession of it. In either scenario, HALT is responsible for preserving and maintaining the land and its trails.

“Any land owner who wants to preserve their land can come to us and ask for a restriction and their land will be preserved forever, plus they receive a tax deduction,” stated Gasser.

In total, HALT oversees 21 properties, including Braim Farm, Center Trail, Eagle Farms, Deneen Conservation Area, Hopkinton Meadows and Peloquin Woods, among many others.

The organization just launched a new, updated website that includes details about each property, including locations as well as which properties permit passive recreation activities such as biking, cross country skiing, hiking, horseback riding and sightseeing.

HALT inspects its properties at least once each year, typically done by land stewards, who are local volunteers and who have an interest in the conservation of the property.

“They make certain the land is retaining its character, that there’s no encroachment, or nothing impeding the trail such as a fallen tree,” explained Gasser.

Another helpful resource has been the local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, who have completed numerous Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects on the properties, including new signage, trail clearing and bridge refurbishment.

“I’d say there’s been a couple dozen completed so far,” said vice president Barry Rosenbloom.

The success of the organization is built on its volunteers and its membership, which both Rosenbloom and Gasser hope will increase.

On Sept. 25, HALT is holding its annual meeting at HCAM studios (77 Main St.) starting at 7 p.m. (attendees are advised to be there by 6:45). The community is encouraged to attend and learn about the organization’s mission and accomplishments from the past year, as well as meet HALT’s board of directors.

entrance of the door. Known as the “Missing Man Table,” it’s a memorial set up during dining functions in the military to commemorate those missing in action or imprisoned.

Almy, who still volunteers, began the tradition when the Senior Center was located in the Town Hall basement, hosting a small breakfast for a small number of veterans.

“We didn’t have much room, there were only six or eight people who went, and it was only me doing the cooking,” Almy recalled.

Now there are multiple cooks creating the meal and a group of volunteers to help set the tables and serve the food to 30-50 veterans each month.

Though the cost of the items served comes to about $4 per person, a tradition was started by a volunteer named Joe Martin, who has since passed away. He made a donation, and the veterans have not had to pay since then. Now there is a waiting list to donate for the breakfast, stretching into the early months of 2020.

he Hopkinton School Committee received updates and voted on several housekeeping items during its first meeting of the new school year.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carol Cavanaugh and Director of Finance Susan Rothermich presented the status report to the committee members on items including enrollment numbers, special education, requests for additional staff, and even an update on the first day of school.

“We had a great start to the school year,” Cavanaugh said during the Sept. 5 meeting. “It was seamless.”

Cavanaugh spoke about the message that she shared with the teachers when they reported back to school on Aug. 26, a message about the importance of growth, not just achievement.

“We do have that reputation for being top-tier schools, but what does that mean for all of our learners?” she said. “We really should define excellence as, ‘Better today than yesterday, and better this year than last year.’ “ As of the date of the meeting, said Cavanaugh, there were 247 additional students enrolled in the district over last year, with seven students enrolling in the previous three days alone. That number is more than double what was budgeted based on NESDEC predictions and already surpassed the 186 new students who were welcomed to the district last year.

“It’s striking when you look at the percentage of our entire enrollment and how much of it has come in in the past two years — it’s more than 10 percent,” commented School Committee vice chair Nancy Richards-Cavanaugh.

The increase caused a request for four new paraprofessional positions for Elmwood and Hopkins elementary schools. Due to the increase in enrollment, classroom sizes are up to 25 students in some of the grade levels.

“I don’t think any teacher at Elmwood wouldn’t be able to handle the additional students, but the additional support would be wonderful,” said Elmwood principal Ann Carver.

The School Committee unanimously approved the hiring of four new paraprofessionals.

Regarding the special education program in Hopkinton, Cavanaugh told the committee that she received a report from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that stated the district’s review of student safety and discipline data from the past three years showed “no identified significant disproportionality” by race or ethnicity in special education identification, placement or discipline.

“That is considered a clean bill of health,” Cavanaugh noted.

Cavanaugh and Rothermich asked that the committee approve the district’s request from the town $350,000 to begin an engineering study of Hopkinton High School in order to move forward with building six additional classrooms.

“We would really like to get this process started and plan for a June 2020 construction as opposed to a June 2021 construction,” Rothermich said.

The total cost for the project is preliminarily estimated at $3.5 million. The $350,000 will cover the design, engineering and architectural plans so the total project can be bid out in time for Town Meeting in the spring.

Finally, the committee was asked to vote to approve for Rothermich to represent Hopkinton Public Schools as the district enters into negotiations with Gale and Associates to design and engineer a partial roof replacement at Hopkins School, not to exceed the $100,000 that was approved at the Town Meeting in May. The School Committee voted unanimously to approve.

HYC partners with Education Station for reduced-cost SAT prep classes

reparing for college can be a stressful time for many families, but thanks to a couple of Hopkinton organizations, there now can be one less stressor for families in need.

The Hopkinton Youth Commission (HYC) has partnered with local business Education Station to offer low- or no-cost SAT prep courses for families who otherwise could not afford them.

SAT prep courses can cost around $1,500, making them unaffordable for some students with an eye on college.

“We found that this was causing a lot of anxiety,” said HYC chair Dawn Ronan. “Kids felt like they weren’t prepared for the SATs but couldn’t afford

to sign up for prep classes.”

That’s when Ronan reached out to Education Station, a tutoring organization in Hopkinton that offers SAT and ACT prep courses, to come up with a way to make sure all students in town would be able to participate no matter their financial situation.

“Through this collaboration we were able to offer classes for $400, and even gave full scholarships to three students,” Ronan said.

The prep courses allowed the students to walk into the test more prepared and lowered their anxiety, Ronan explained.

“Students told me that they felt more confident in taking the SATs,” she said.

Ronan also said that the students reported that their test scores rose after taking the prep course, with some students reporting a significant increase.

“It was so great to be able to collaborate on something like this, especially when we are hearing from the school district that stress and anxiety in students is such a huge issue,” she said.

This is not the only collegeprep activity on which the HYC has partnered with Education Station to guide students navigating the college application process. The two groups collaborated to offer a “College Boot Camp,” which provided students with advice on putting together a resume, writing an essay and handling a college interview.

“Kids left the boot camp saying that they felt prepared for senior year,” Ronan said.

Ronan credits Education Station, founded by Christine Chapman and Sims Yun, for allowing families in need the ability to be a part of this important college prep process.

“It made us all so proud that by partnering together and building bridges we were able to offer this to the Hopkinton students, and will be hopefully be able to offer well into the future,” she said.

Education Station, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month, jumped on the opportunity to help after learning of the need in its own community.

“Our vision has always been to try our very best to provide quality educational tutoring and test prep classes that are normally reserved for the wealthy, and make it affordable for everyone,” Chapman said about the company’s mission.

When the owners were approached by Ronan to partner on making the prep classes more attainable to those in need, Chapman said they were all for it.

“I am a Hopkinton resident with two children of my own,” she said.

“To be able to do this in my own hometown has been a great blessing.”

Due to the success of the collaboration, HYC and Education Station once again will offer reduced-cost SAT and ACT prep courses through the winter and spring to prepare students for the tests. The sessions will be available at the reduced rate of $400 and each session is limited to 28 participants.

The event was held in memory of Meg Parduhn, a Hopkinton mother of four who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2018. Among those at the event were Hopkinton’s Marie Boyle (with microphone), a cancer survivor who has worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for the cause. The featured speaker was former longtime WBZ-TV arts and entertainment reporter Joyce Kulhawik, shown with Start Line Brewing owner Ted Twinney. Kulhawik also is a cancer survivor.

Proceeds from the event went to the cancer-fighting organization Girly Girl PARTS as well as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The new library hours that started Sept. 9 are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday.

Saturdays remain 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday afternoon hours will be added in the coming months. With the new schedule, the library will be open a total of 58 hours per week, up from 50 hours under the current schedule.

7:01 p.m. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil and Officer Benjamin Stickney conducted a motor vehicle stop on Hayden Rowe Street and subsequently arrested Julio O. Flores, 39, of 13 Orchard St., Milford, and charged him with drinking alcohol from open container, operation of motor vehicle with license suspended and marked lanes violation.

7:13 a.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident involving two cars on Pleasant Street. Officers Jay Deiana and Matthew Santoro responded and reported no injuries.

7:49 a.m. A Duffield Road resident complained of his neighbor’s rooster making noise. A message was left for the animal control officer.

11:45 p.m. A Rocky Woods Road caller reported a naked sport bike/ motorcyclist had been riding around the neighborhood the past two nights.

12:30 a.m. A motorist reported someone hit a deer on West Main Street.

Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officer Brendon Lyver responded and found the animal deceased. A message was left for the animal control officer.

6:45 a.m. A caller reported an erratic operator on West Main Street who hit a side rail and had damage on the front left and right sides of the vehicle. Officers Stephen Buckley and Brendon Lyver responded, and the vehicle was gone upon their arrival.

9:06 a.m. A walk-in reported her son found a brand new TV at a dumpster at a business. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil took a report.

10:51 a.m. A caller reported furniture fell off a large truck and onto Clinton Street. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil responded and spoke with a trash truck operator who was swapping out containers and removed the furniture.

6:30 p.m. A caller reported a raccoon stuck in a sewage drain on Laurel Canyon Drive. The animal control officer was notified.

6:49 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle spun off the roadway of Wood Street and into the woods. Sergeant Arthur Schofield and Officers John Corridan and Robert Ekross responded. No injuries were reported. A report was to follow.

2:35 a.m. A caller reported fallen wires and a tree on top of a house on Lumber Street. Sergeant William Burchard and Officers Stephen Buckley and Ryan Polselli responded and Eversource was notified. Lumber Street was closed and the electricity was disconnected.

No structural damage was done to the house.

6:55 p.m. A Barbara Road resident reported a neighbor hit her mailbox while impaired. Officers Brian Sanchioni and Robert Ekross responded.

The driver was subsequently pulled over by the Upton Police Department.

5:32 p.m. A Woodview Way caller reported another individual was claiming he hit her car, but he claims he did not. Officer Brian Sanchioni responded, and a report was to follow.

August 31

8:52 p.m. A Teresa Road resident reported a suspicious white vehicle parked in front of his house for the fourth time.

The caller stated that whenever the homeowner looks out the window, the vehicle turns around and leaves the area.

The caller requested extra checks of the area. Officer Derek Morton responded and checked the area with a negative find and subsequently advised the caller to call back if the vehicle returns.

September 1

5:51 a.m. A caller reported a man walking in the middle of the roadway of Priscilla Road, and he was nearly hit.

Officers Brendon Lyver and Ryan Polselli responded and provided the man, who was walking home from work, with a courtesy transport.

8:37 a.m. An East Main street caller reported not receiving expected mail or packages and wanted it logged.

12:41 p.m. A caller reported a coyote near the playground at Marathon School on Hayden Rowe Street that eventually ran off in to the woods. Officer Matthew Santoro responded and checked the area with a negative find.

4:51 p.m. A caller reported a parrot flew into a person on Jamie Lane. The caller attempted to reunite the bird with its owner. The animal control officer was contacted.

6:57 p.m. A North Mill Street caller reported hearing gunshots in the area.

Officer Benjamin Stickney responded and found all quiet.

September 2

4:38 a.m. Officers Stephen Buckley and Brendon Lyver assisted the Southborough Police Department in responding to Woodland Road for a breaking and entering and a possible domestic situation in progress.

11:34 a.m. A caller reported a resident screaming and yelling at other residents at an East Main Street facility.

Sergeant Timothy Brennan and Officer Jay Deiana responded, and a report was to follow.

1:43 p.m. A Curtis Road caller reported a Craigslist scam in which a house listed for rent is not actually for rent. The scammer was requesting money to be transferred to a PayPal account. The incident was logged.

4:12 p.m. A school principal called to check on a child on Bus 6. Officers John Corridan and Robert Ekross assisted, and it was confirmed that the child got on the wrong bus.

1:45 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious man walking a 7-year-old child on a leash at Legacy Farms North. Officer Jay Deiana responded and reported the child is autistic and the adult was using the leash for protection.

September 9

8:59 a.m. A caller reported a suspicious white van with a mattress in back on Alexander Road. Sergeant Aaron O’Neil responded and checked on the vehicle, which was being used as a camper. All was OK.

September 5

12:09 a.m. A caller reported hitting a deer on Hayden Rowe Street while riding his motorcycle. No personal injury was reported. Minor front left damage was incurred. The incident was logged.

11:17 p.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident on Pond Street involving one car. Sergeant William Burchard and Officers Brendon Lyver and Ryan Polselli responded and reported property damage. A tow truck was requested. A criminal application was issued to the driver for reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

September 6

10:04 a.m. A Woodview Way caller reported his mother’s friend had been missing for 24 hours. Officer Moira McGaffigan responded. A report was to follow.

3:05 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious male watching girls play sports on the Fruit Street fields. Chief Edward Lee responded, checked the area and found nothing suspicious.

6:23 p.m. A Mayhew Court caller reported hearing neighbors arguing.

Sergeant Matthew McNeil responded and approached the neighbors, who stated police assistance was not needed.

September 7

10:44 a.m. A Winter Street caller reported her neighbor’s door had been open for an hour. Sergeant Matthew McNeil and Officer Matthew Santoro checked the property and found all OK and secured the door.

11:30 a.m. A Southborough resident reported his car was keyed overnight, possibly while parked in a Cedar Street parking lot. The vandalism was logged.

1:26 p.m. A caller reported two suspicious males in two vehicles on Lakeshore Drive. Sergeant Matthew McNeil and Officer Matthew Santoro responded and found one person napping in his car after his work shift. The other vehicle was gone.

10:54 p.m. Multiple callers reported an intoxicated person attempting to leave a Lumber Street establishment.

Officers Derek Morton and Benjamin Stickney responded and spoke with the wife, who was to drive her husband home.

Anthony Alessi, 74, of Holliston, passed away at his home on Sept. 6.

He was the son of the late Phyllis (Mattson) and Salvatore Alessi.

A combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Anthony was a well decorated corporal in the Marines, serving in the 1st Battalion 7th Marines. He was a devoted family man who loved time spent with family and friends. Anthony was a Mason, a member of the American Legion, an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and someone who took pleasure in dancing at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Natick.

He is survived by three sons, Anthony F. Alessi and his wife, Kristen, of Northborough, Paul Alessi of Hopkinton, and Stephen Alessi and his wife, Michelle, of Haverhill.

Elaine Awiszus E l a i n e P. Aw i s z u s , 8 0 , of Hopkinton, passed away Sept. 5. Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Rita (Moreau) and George MacLeod. She was the wife of 60 years to Ernest A. Awiszus of Hopkinton.

Ernest and Elaine had met while working at Manning, Maxwell and Moore in Watertown. Prior to her retirement in 1997, Elaine had worked for 11 years at Newton North High School as the secretary to the vice principal. She enjoyed watching her husband coach and play sports.

Besides her husband, Elaine is survived by two children, Cynthia Murphy of Taunton and Scott Awiszus and his wife, Mary, of Kennebunk, Maine; her sister-in-law, Joanne Kyte and her husband, James, of Melbourne, Florida; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Conor and Shannon. She is predeceased by her brother, Donald Macleod.

JoAnn Cassery J o A n n Broady Cassery, 79, a longtime resident of Foxboro, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 29 at Golden Pond in Hopkinton.

Born Oct. 5, 1939, in Knoxville, Tennessee, she grew up in Sevierville, Tennessee. The daughter of the late Dr. Robert A. and Ellen Cox Broady, she graduated as valedictorian from Sevier County High School in 1957, later receiving a B.S. from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Education from Peabody Teaching College in Nashville. She taught biology in Baltimore.

oBiTUARieS She was married to Gary Cassery for more than 30 years, and was very active in the community in Foxboro.

She loved teaching Sunday school at Bethany Church and many after-school crafts courses at Burrell Elementary School and elsewhere. JoAnn delighted in children of all ages. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Despite living much of her adult life in New England, she retained her gentle Southern accent, charming everyone she met.

She is survived by daughter Karen Cassery-Daniels and husband B.J. Daniels, son Robert P. Cassery and wife Inna, grandson Peter Cassery, brother Joseph L. Broady and wife Mary Ann, sister Barbara Broady Hodges and husband James, sister-in-law Carolyn Headrick Broady, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her grandson, Alex Daniels, and her brothers Robert A. Broady, Jr., John Cox Broady and William S. Broady.

Her funeral was held Sept. 7 at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home in Southington, Connecticut. Lisa Kane Lisa Soo Kane, 38, of Framingham and formerly of Hopkinton, passed away Aug. 26.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, she was the daughter of Susan (Vachout) Kane of Westborough and the late Charles Kane.

Lisa was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Natick. Besides her mother, she is survived by her brother, Jeffrey Kane, and his wife, Katie Yahns, of Sherrill, New York.

A funeral service took place Aug. 30 at Christ Lutheran Church in Natick, with burial following in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery, Hopkinton.

Susan Rand Susan Jane Rand, 73, passed away Sept. 8, at Golden Pond in Hopkinton after a long illness, surrounded by her family. Susan was a graduate of Danvers

High School. She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Salem State College and her master’s in counseling at Lesley University. Susan practiced counseling on Cape Cod. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, painting and sketching. Susan participated in the Massachusetts General Hospital FTD (Frontal Temporal Dementia) Gala in 2018.

Susan was the daughter of the late Harvey and Olive Abbott, sister to Harvey, Richard and Gary Abbott. She is survived by friend and former husband Lee Rand; her three adult children, Jennifer Buchanan, Rebeka Merson and Douglas Abbott; her grandchildren, Alicia MacMillan, Zachariah Merson, Ryan Buchanan and Hannah and Jacob Merson; and three great-grandchildren.
