Clinton - The Museum of Russian Icons new familyoriented exhibit “Matryoshka: The Russian Nesting Doll,” opens on Saturday, May 18. The exhibit features 83 Matryoshka sets of lavishly painted wooden nesting dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. These are on loan from the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis; additionally, several other private Matryoshka sets from local collections will be displayed. This is anticipated to be the museum’s most widely attended and artistically significant exhibition of 2013. Matryoshka nesting dolls are one of the most popular gifts that millions of travelers purchase during their trips to Russia. Whether depicting ancient legends, religious themes, or political caricatures, Matryoshkas can reveal a compelling story about the culture and history of Russia. From children’s toys to the avant-garde, the familiar bell-shaped silhouettes offer a
visually rich source of learning for adults and children. The first Russian Matryoshka set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, a folk crafts painter in the Abramtsevo estate of the Russian industrialist and art patron Savva Mamontov. The dolls in this travelling exhibition were selected from a private San Francisco collection of wooden dolls, one of the largest collections of its kind in the United States. The sets in the exhibit were created over several decades and include pre-WWII dolls as well as dolls from various regional centers of Matryoshka production during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. The exhibition also features unique Matryoshka dolls painted by recognized masters of Matryoshka painting. Located in Minneapolis, Minn., the Museum of Russian Art was founded in 2002 through a gift from Honorary Consul to the Russian Fed-
eration, Raymond Johnson. The museum is a membersupported nonprofit that preserves and displays historically significant examples of Russian art and artifacts. It is only museum in North America dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the works of Russia’s most esteemed artists. The Museum of Russian Icons collection of more than 500 Russian icons and artifacts is the largest of its kind in North America, and one of the largest private collections outside Russia. Spanning six centuries, the compendium includes important historical paintings dating f rom the earliest periods of icon “writing” to the present. The museum was founded in 2006 as a nonprofit educational institution by Massachusetts industrialist and art collector, Gordon B. Lankton. The museum is located at 203 Union St., Clinton. Civil Air Patrol: learn to lead, fly while having fun By Joan F. Simoneau Community Reporter Marlborough - The Lt. Col. Frank Pocher Minute Man Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently held an open house at the Marlborough Airport, introducing youths ages 12 to 18 to an exciting way to learn to lead, fly and have fun. Squadron Commander Maj. Sharon Ingraham gave an overview of the program, which includes three missions – emergency services, the cadet program and aerospace education. She explained that the volunteer civilian units help with humanitarian rescue missions, search and rescue, and disaster relief. 2nd Lt. Sean Donovan, a cadet commander, outlined the program emphasizing that cadets fly, hike, camp, get in shape and push themselves to new limits. To become a cadet, an applicant must be at least 12 years old and not yet 19 years old, he told the group. Maj. Shelley Rosenbaum Lipman discussed aerospace edu-

Whitcomb Middle School – eighthgrader Mike Bucchino and two seventh-graders – Jabrail Clark and Gino DiMatteo. “I started in CAP when I was 12 because CAP seemed like the way I could become a pilot,” Mike said. “Once I
joined it was instantly thrilling. CAP holds orientation flights in its aircraft every few months, which I always enjoy.” “The whole reason I joined was to learn how to fly and CAP is doing just that. I hope to learn how to fly gliders this summer,” he added. Jabrail joined CAP last September and said it has been “the experience of a lifetime.” “The reason I joined CAP is that I am interested in aviation and plan on joining
the Air Force so this was the perfect opportunity. One experience that was breathtaking was about a week ago we had a Massachusetts wing conference in which all CAP members from the state came together. We went to different fun seminars throughout the day and at the end we had a banquet,” he said. “I joined CAP because I was interested in learning about the Air Force,” Gino said. “I discovered that CAP is involved in many types of services. Some are volunteer services and aerospace. Some of the fun experiences I have had so far are taking the controls of an airplane in flight, using a flight simulator, helping at the festival of trees, and attending the state-wide CAP conference in Hyannis.” Many adults also find the CAP just as rewarding as young cadets. Pauline Smith, of Hudson and formerly of Marlborough, was recruited by her grandson, Cadet Ken Palardy, in September 2011. “I take pride in being a member of The Civil Air
Patrol. It’s a longtime dream come true,” said Smith, who is now a second lieutenant, public affairs officer and recruiting/retention officer. “I wanted to join the CAP when I was a teen, but never did. Concerts will be held on the Neary School grounds. Once open, you may purchase a pass at the beach itself. Always bring your pass with you and present to gate attendant. 2013 Massachusetts Parks Pass - Westborough residents may borrow a 2013 MA ParksPass free of charge from our depar tment. The pass entitles you to free parking for one vehicle (no buses or vans) at over 50 facilities in the MA state parks system that charge a day-use parking fee. ParksPass is par t of the “Use Nature as Your Guide” program sponsored by the Mass. Dept. of Conservation and Recreation. From Boston to the Berkshires, enjoy a wide variety of recreational oppor tunities including hiking, swimming, mountain biking, horseback riding and much more. The pass may be borrowed for one day or one weekend and must be returned by 9 a.m. the following day. Passes taken on Friday may be returned the following Monday. Shrewsbury – An idea from a neighbor turned into an activity for guests; then it evolved into a hobby and now it is her passion. Melissa Misiewicz to date has found over 5,000 letterboxes and planted about 250 boxes, each with its own hand-carved stamp. “I wanted something to do when a friend came to visit with her ďŹ ve kids; something inexpensive and entertaining,â€? Misiewicz said. She went online and found the website, www.letterboxing. org and took her houseguests to ďŹ nd two boxes in Dean Park. So began her quest for discovering new places and collecting rubber stamp art. She was completely hooked. . Letterboxing is an outdoor treasure hunt following clues that are posted online. People like Misiewicz, who develop the clues and make the stamps, are called “letterboxersâ€? or planters. They hide small, waterproof containers in public places such as parks and trails. The boxes contain a little log book, a

rubber stamp and ink pad, all packaged in a zip lock bag. The object is for the ďŹ nder to stamp his or her sketch book with a brief description of the site and use their personal stamp in the logbook to record the ďŹ nd. The sport originated in England in the mid-1800s and became popular in the United States after an article appeared in the Smithsonian Magazine in the late 1990s. Now there are over 20,000 letterboxes hidden throughout the country. Misiewicz recruited several
friends into trying letterboxing. She went to a craft store and bought the stamp she still uses, a little elf. She chose the trail name of her initials, MIM. That was last July. The friends liked the adventure and exercise and found sites in surrounding towns. Over the summer, Misiewicz’s family continued the quest for boxes on their vacation in Nova Scotia, with her son Nicholas adopting the name MIMSON. By September, she was ready to carve her ďŹ rst two stamps for Prospect Park. She made

Since those ďŹ rst stamps and clues, Misiewicz has carved almost 500 dierent stamps ranging from traditional boxes to special event stamps for holidays, birthdays, and for seasons of the year. She also creates them for other letterboxers who don’t like to make the stamps themselves. “I never was an artist, but I always liked arts and crafts. Now I have a whole new craft,â€? she said. Her skill has improved with her many projects, she said, and is similar to ďŹ ne woodcuts with very intricate details and exquisite lettering. “Letterboxing has so many facets. You can get as involved as you want. There’s the traditional treasure hunt part. There’s the collecting of locations and stamps. There’s the artistic craft part of carving and the challenge of writing clues. There’s the creation and collecting of trading cards, and there’s the social aspect of
meeting other letterboxers at gatherings and events or interacting online,� Misiewicz said. Trading cards are to letterboxers like baseball cards are to young players or artist trading cards are to painters. Misiewicz has designed 80 of her own cards and has collected over 2,000 cards from other enthusiasts. Events are held in many places, and this year, New England has the honor of hosting the national letterboxing group’s 15th anniversary. Coordinators expect about 300 to 400 people from all over the country to attend the August meeting in Groton, Mass. Her hobby has taken Misiewicz and her family to 22 states and Canada. She has scrapbooks and log books that overflow with her collections. She emphasized that letterboxers must respect both the hiding places and the environment, being careful to not disturb the area and replacing the contents for the next visitor. By Joyce DeWallace Contributing Writer Northborough – It’s time to dig out the hiking boots or comfortable sneakers, spray on some bug repellent and head for the open spaces. Now that the nice weather is here, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the numerous trails in Northborough. Not only do they delight the senses, they also provide the ideal setting for spring and summer conditioning. There are nine main recreational areas in the town with over 20 miles of trails. Credit for the planning and upkeep of the system goes to the Trails Subcommittee of the Northborough Open Space Committee, commonly referred to the Northborough Trails Committee. The committee was founded in February 2001 when Arthur Cole went before the Open Space Committee to inquire about the possibility of a trail system being created within the town’s borders. “I had observed over the years that the opportunity existed for an extensive trail system, because such a large percentage of land in town was unable to be developed as it was wet, town-owned, state-owned, or for any other reason. And I always liked to be out in wild areas. Also, I was already retired and was looking for something fun to do. Obviously, both reasons had something to do with a selfish, seeking of pleasure [reason],” Cole said. Since then, the committee has gained members and expanded the number and quality of trails in Northborough. The volunteers groom existing trails by picking up trash, clearing brush and mowing grass. They build bridges over

wet areas, and create maps for new trails. They keep the signs and maps replenished so others can enjoy this local resource. The specific mission of the Northborough Trails Committee is to make and maintain trails with the permission of land owners, public and private. They consider themselves to be “trail stewards.” All parts of this central Mass town have trails. They include: Carlstrom II Forest, Carney Park/Cold Harbor, Coyote Trail, Edmund Hill Woods, Little Chauncy/Cedar Hill, Mount Pisgah, Watson Park, Yellick Conservation Area, and Stirrup Brook Trail. Mount Pisgah, the largest area, boasts two scenic overviews. On a clear day, Boston’s tallest buildings are visible to the east from the North View rock formation. With almost 100 acres of Massachusetts wildlife land, this site also covers a section of Berlin. The hardwood forest has grown up on what was formerly farmland. Other parts include wetlands and open meadowlands all crisscrossed with many trails, including some
shorter loop trails. Located in the northwest section of town, Mount Pisgah is ideal for families to explore and enjoy a picnic. The Cold Harbor Trail wends its way f rom West Main Street to Cherry Street and continues onto Church St. with its scenic views. This is a watershed area and part of the trail runs along a dam, while wooden decking paths provide dry footing through the marsh and wetlands. Close to the Shrewsbury town line on West Main Street is the one-mile Jubilee Loop Trail. This is part of the Carlstrom II Memorial Forest owned by the New England Forestry Foundation. Pet Boarding Choosing a primo place for your pet when you’re away By Eric Christensen Everyone enjoys a vacation, but planning for a trip can be stressful. Pet owners have an extra task that can also be emotionally challenging: choosing the right person to care for their pets. With many options to pick from, pet owners need to know how to make the best decision. With a sharp eye and a few questions, they should be able to choose the right service for them. The most common option is a pet boarding facility. “Start with a referral from a friend or family member, or from your local animal shelter. Your veterinarian will often have some suggestions or may offer boarding,” Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues for The Humane Society of the United States, said. “Next, check to see whether your state requires a facility to have certifications or inspections. That’s your first clue that you’re dealing with a credible, respectable kennel.” Pet owners should inspect the facility in person. Jennifer King, adoption coordinator and former board member of Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue, said you must pay attention to your instincts. “It’s critical to ask questions about feeding, exercise, fresh air, socializing with dogs and people. And in addition, ask if there are charges for each of those services,” Theisen said. She suggested that you ask about training programs and staff-to-animal ratios. Both King and Theisen say it is important to ask hypothetical questions based on your pet’s special needs. Is the staff qualified to handle medication, special diets or other emergency issues? “We really like to see a facility that requires a vaccine for bordetella - kennel cough - because it’s very common and very contagious,” Theisen added. A second option is in-home pet care where a sitter visits regularly and looks after your pet. King says this arrangement involves a tradeoff: The caretaker may have less training, but your pet will probably experience less stress. Make sure sitters are insured for liability, and also check with your insurance provider to see what your homeowner
policy covers. “After you screen them, and you have two or three candidates,” Theisen said, “have them come to your house and meet your pets. You know your pet better than anyone, and it’s up to you to gauge who will take the best care of them.” A third option is services such as DogVacay, through which pet owners can arrange
to leave their pet at a sitter’s home. DogVacay coordinates pet-sitting not only for dogs, but also cats, rabbits and even potbellied pigs. Aaron Hirschhorn, the cofounder and CEO of DogVacay, said the company provides a wide variety of options and services so that pet owners can find the ideal pet sitter. “Pet owners can filter for
a big yard or sitters who have experience giving medication,” he said. “This will allow owners to find the right balance between price and services.” Hirschhorn requires potential sitters to undergo a five-step vetting process that includes interviews, references and training. “We are extremely rigorous about managing quality
control. ... If you look across our reviews, our hosts have earned an average review score of 4.96 out of 5,” he noted. Once a pet sitter is approved, DogVacay also provides insurance and access to medical care. “Our insurance covers both the customers’ pets as well as the hosts’ pets for veterinary emergencies,”Hirschhorn said.
