NEW MAYOR CAME AS KING Bumper crowd at Medieval Fayre

BLACKTOWN City’s new mayor Brad Bunting is not only settling in well on the top job at the state’s largest council, also taking time to rub shoulders with his community, garbed in a scarlet King coat and gold crown at a colourful medieval themed pageantry.

At the two-day Medieval Fayre at Nurrangingy Reserve, Councillor Bunting on his first social event Mayor, joined spectators and a bumper crowd not seen since the pandemic.

Mayor Bunting was elected by his fellow councillors following the unexpected passing of Tony Bleasdale OAM, who died while on his way home from a trip to Korea and China last month.

More than 30,000 people of all ages came to the event, which council organisers said was their biggest number since staging it to showcase the residents’ fascination with the Middle Ages.

The mayor, along with the crowds, were captivated by the sights of knights mounted on handsome horses, noblemen and well-dressed princesses during the parade and sounds of cracking lancets drew gasps from onlookers.

Swordsmanship displays, the birds of prey show, medieval arts and crafts, and blacksmith and woodturners demonstrating their skills at the makeshift village all proved popular to the audience.

The record number of entries for the Best Dressed competition was a sign of enthusiastic participation from the city’s locals and visitors.

The daytime jousting competitions, displays and parade with knights, princesses and gothic characters of the Middle Ages drew the greatest number of audiences.

Arriving in royalty attire with gold-trimmed crown, Mayor Bunting joined the Saturday night banquet at Colebee Reserve where he congratulated the perform-

ers, community and Council’s events team on a “successful weekend.”

“The Blacktown City Medieval Fayre continues to go from strength to strength and has firmly entrenched itself as a favourite of our community,” the mayor told the crowd.

“Blacktown City offers such a diverse range of events and it’s great to see people making the most of what we offer.”

Since elected to the council in 2016, Mayor Bunting served

as deputy mayor and chair of committees on Sister Cities Advisory and Sports and represents the council in policy discussions on the Floodplain Management Australia, Hawkesbury River Council and as Director of Western Sydney Academy of Sport.

To honour the wishes of the late Mayor Bleasdale who represented parts of the council areas of Mount Druitt, Mayor Bunting said he would prioritise rebuilding Mount Druitt

city centre and actively consult with community groups to improve their quality of life in the city.

“This will be a legacy of Tony Bleasdale. In the centre of Mount Druitt, we will create a network of attractive, activated, safe public spaces. We shall see a thriving commercial and residential town centre,” he said.

“We are proud to be home to a large population of First Nations people, and our Council must continue to play a valuable role through our partnership with the Dharug [people].”

Mayor Bunting and his wife Norma and their children are lifelong residents of Mount Druitt.

The Medieval Fayre was part of the year-round Blacktown City Festival highlights which included this month’s Sweet Indulgence Dessert Festival and the Streets Alive and Parade Day.

BIG W opens at Stanhope Gardens

BIG W launched its new Stanhope Gardens store promising low prices and bulk-buy on everyday household items amid skyrocketing living cost concerns by consumers.

Since opening its largest Northwest Sydney shop, the company announced shopping conveniences such as drive-up bays, cheaper health and beauty products range and a bulk-buy department for budget-conscious shoppers, especially families.

At the heart of its offer to consumers, BIG W manager director Dan Hake said, the store has been “designed to provide convenience and value on most trusted brands” that families in the local community are stocking up on to save.

"Our new Stanhope Gardens store brings a new level of shopping convenience and value on brands they trust to the local community,” Mr Hake said.

“At BIG W, we are committed to providing quality products at low prices to our customers, and we’ll

continue to explore new ways to enhance their shopping experience.”

TAt least 50 new employees will be working the store, with more staff coming in as the company continue to be a hub for local employment opportunities, Mr Hake said.

Greenway MP and federal minister for communications Michelle Rowland attended the opening along with Blacktown City Council deputy mayor Chris Quilky and Riverstone MP Warren Kirby.

“The addition of BIG W to Stanhope Village is exciting news for shoppers and families right across North-West Sydney,” Ms Rowland said.

Mr Hake said the store displays a fresh and inspiring new home products range, an extensive books and technology department and the much-loved party products such as made-to-order balloon inflation for those special family moments.

Mr Hake said BIG W utilises energy-efficient LED lighting and the use of trolleys and baskets made from recycled milk bottles.

High litter cost prompts new plan

HE peak body representing councils in Greater Western Sydney, the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) has been awarded $450,000 in grant funding by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) through the Litter Prevention Grants Program.

The funded initiative supports the coordination of the new ambitious Western Sydney-wide litter reduction effort.

WSROC and seven participating Western Sydney councils will team up

to action the Western Sydney Regional Litter Prevention Plan 2023-2027 for maximum coordinated effect.

The seven participating councils are Blacktown City, Cumberland City, Fairfield City, Hawkesbury City, The Hills Shire, Liverpool City, and City of Parramatta Councils.

Litter costs Western Sydney residents more than $31M each year, with councils cleaning up and disposing of truckloads of littered items across the region.

“The most littered locations are roadsides, carparks, recreational parks, shopping strips, and train stations. However, our creeks, rivers and other waterways are also seriously impacted by littering,” said WSROC President, Councillor Barry Calvert.

“Along with cigarette butts, food packaging, and takeaway containers, including coffee cups, are the most littered items in Western Sydney.

“Only 55 percent of waste disposed

in public places was correctly disposed, leaving councils to clean up 45 percent of rubbish littered in our region.”

“This new Western Sydney Regional Litter Prevention Plan responds to the needs of our seven participating councils, who serve Australia’s most culturally diverse and fastest growing region with a population of over 2.6 million people and more than 191,000 businesses spread across approximately 9,000 square kilometres,” said Councillor Calvert.

WHERE WATTLES ONCE GREW Two new schools rise up

IT wasn’t long ago Melonba was a vast empty paddock near M2 motorway, sandwiched between Shanes Park and Marsden Park, and accessed via old Richmond Road.

But nowadays, its Blacktown City’s fast-growing suburb, it is home to about 1,500 residents and growing - mostly families, 66 percent employed fulltime averaging around $1,800 weekly income.

Melonba, a Dharug name for the bright yellow flowering Wattle native plant abundant in all seasons at this suburb, is also the site of two new highrise schools the state government has prioritised to cater for about 3,000 more students.

It’s a key milestone to have two highrise schools for Blacktown, Member for Londonderry and Deputy Premier Prue Car said.

“It has been fantastic to see the permanent Melonba High School and Melonba Public School coming to life,”

Ms Car said on her recent inspection of the construction progress at site.

Along with Melonba High School Principal Leon Weatherstone and Melonba Public School Principal Larissa Maraga, Ms Car visited highest floor of the high-rise school to scale the sweep-

ing landscape in this part of Western Sydney.

Ms Car grew up not far from Melonba and she is the MP representing nearby Londonderry electorate.

“We are committed to delivering world class schools for the hardworking families of Western Sydney,” Ms Car said.

“Delivering these schools is part of our long-term plan to repair the state’s public education system, and I am delighted to see that thousands of students will soon be able to attend these schools

in their local area.”

Ms Car said these new schools are part of the Minns government’s commitment to addressing the school infrastructure backlog in NSW, with record $3.5B investment set aside for 24 new and upgraded primary and high schools in Western Sydney alone.

Ms Car inspected the works on the high-rise schools with roofing and walls already installed on several of the buildings.

Once completed prior to the start of first term next year, Melonba High

School, will have 97 classrooms catering for up to 2,000 students from Year 7 to 12.

The state-of-the-art learning facilities include specialist classrooms for science, wood and metal workshops, performing arts, textile, hospitality and kitchen spaces, multi-media and visual arts classrooms and three specialist support classrooms.

Everything the students need as they learn are built such as a new library, canteen, administration facilities, hall, outdoor activity areas and shared on-site parking for high school and primary school staff.

More than 100 new students have been enrolled this early at Melonba Public School from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The school will cater for up to 1,000 students with 44 classrooms, three specialist support classrooms, a new library, canteen, administration facilities, hall, outdoor covered activity areas, sports courts, landscaped outdoor learning areas and on-site staff parking.

Principal Leon Weatherstone said: “Our students in Years 7 and 8 have demonstrated remarkable adaptability to school routines and show genuine enthusiasm for their education. The progress on our permanent school site is nothing short of astounding,” Mr Weatherstone said.

RETURN and Earn in NSW has celebrated recycling 11 billion bottles, cans, and cartons since its 2017 inception. The scheme has returned $1.1B in refunds to the public and raised $54M for charities and community groups. The initiative, partnered with TOMRA Cleanaway and funded by the beverage industry, contributes significantly to Australia’s circular economy.

Surgical wait list reduced

The NSW Government is reducing the surgical wait list by embracing short stay and same-day surgeries. The Same Day and Short Stay Joint Replacement Program allows patients to go home the day after surgery when appropriate. Based on research, this program supports home recovery with prehabilitation and post-operative care. Early results show promising increases in same-day surgeries, improving patient experience and hospital capacity.

The pilot aims for faster recovery and reduced hospital pressure.

Demi joins Workers Club board

FILLIPINO Demi Robinson won a seat in the Board of Directors of the Blacktown Workers Club Ltd at the recent highly contested elections.

Demi is a highly respected professional and leader in the Filipino community and successfully swept through the recently concluded Club elections with the highest number of votes. This assures her tenure of office of three consecutive years.

“This win is not only for me but also for the Filipino community,” she said.

For more than a decade, Demi has given her time to the service of the community. In the spirit of volunteerism, she has held executive positions in various community organisations namely: civic, women, cultural and

Bsporting groups. She was the former VP External and Treasurer of the Philippine Community Council of NSW. She is currently the Business Manager/Treasurer for the Sydney Sonata Singers Inc., Treasurer, Bicol Communities League Inc and PRO/Public Officer for Ateneo Alumni Association of Australia.

In recent years, she has stretched herself outside the community and has joined mainstream organisations. Her tireless work ethic, social responsibility and commitment have seen her active participation in the Blacktown Workers Women Lawn Bowling Club, the Blacktown City Council Seniors Advisory Committee and the Blacktown Seniors Choir, “Simply Voices”.

The Blacktown Workers Club has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the largest and successful hospitality and lifestyle organisations in Sydney. It is a favourite of the Filipino community in the west.

With a membership of over 55,000, the club prides itself with a strong sense of community and commits to over $3.5M annually in support of various charitable and sporting clubs.

“This win means being able to serve the wider community and I’m looking forward to it,” said Robinson.

This is also a testimony of her hard work, perseverance and integrity. Demi Robinson is happily married to Leslie Thomas Strong.

New bus shelters are in your area

LACKTOWN City Council have recently built five new bus shelters, with another five completed in the next six months, to keep up with demand from commuters wanting shade and protection from all weather conditions.

They are located at:

• Richmond Road, Quakers Hill (opposite Alford Street).

• Richmond Road, Dean Park (to the rear of Kenneth Crescent).

• Riverbank Drive, The Ponds.

• Lucretia Road, Seven Hills.

• Pully Drive, Ropes Crossing (works in progress).

• Sentry Drive, Stanhope Gardens.

• James Cook Drive, Kings Langley.

• Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood

• Wilson Road, Acacia Gardens.

• Carlisle Avenue, Mount Druitt

Blacktown City Council said they are “looking after the health and safety of its community by installing 10 new bus shelters to provide shade and protection from the sun and harsh weather.”

The shelters include seating, cover

from the elements and tactiles for people with visual impairments.

Council received funding for five of the bus shelters through the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

Providing local bus shelters are among the responsibilities of councils as a local government, in addition to maintaining and improving public infrastructure.

The funding and provision of the bus shelters were negotiated by the council during the term of the late

mayor, Tony Bleasdale OAM. Council said the shelters were guided by feedback from community consultations.

Blacktown is among council areas in Western Sydney that submitted its current and future transport infrastructure needs in last year’s NSW Parliamentary Inquiry.

As the city’s population constantly grows, Council said in its funding submission that they needed to “meet financial demands on providing basic infrastructure and services.”

WARNING OVER HOUSEHOLD COMPLACENCEY

Blacktown a house fire hot spot

FIREFIGHTERS, NRL stars and other top athletes are urging households across NSW to make sure they have working smoke alarms fitted in their homes, as Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) launches its annual Winter Fire Safety Campaign.

New figures reveal that last winter, nearly half (49 per cent) of the 1,080 homes that were impacted by fire did not have a working smoke alarm, or any alarm, in place.

Blacktown ranked highly among most residential fires last winter 228, with kitchen fires the most common.

Winter in 2022 was particularly deadly for house fires, with a record 17 deaths – more than four times the total of the previous winter – and 87 people injured. During that season, exactly half of the 959 houses that caught alight did not have a working smoke alarm.

FRNSW is amping up its efforts to warn people about the dangers of smoke alarm complacency, enlisting the

help of sports stars in a social media campaign to better connect with communities and establishing its own awareness day, Smoke Alarm Action Day.

Sports stars including netball star Maddy Turner

(NSW Swifts/Australian Diamonds) and a range for players including Tom Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Jaydn Su’A (St George Illawarra Dragons), Stephen Crichton and Georgia Ravics (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), and Suia Wongand Keeley Davis (Sydney Roosters), will feature in social media video messages encouraging households to fit a smoke alarm in their home or have their existing alarm checked.

Get together with friends and family and enjoy a great day out, with plenty of kid-friendly tracks, trails and activities to suit everyone.

FRNSW will hold its inaugural Smoke Alarm Action Day on June 1 to kick off the agency’s Winter Fire Safety Campaign and mark the commencement of a dangerous period for house fires.

FRNSW also conducts community outreach programs to engage culturally and linguistically diverse communities in smoke alarm and fire safety messaging.

Residents can book a home fire safety visit when firefighters can install smoke alarms free of charge and find further advice on the FRNSW website at www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby said: “In Sydney’s growing Northwest, it’s essential that every household has a working fire alarm.”

“We have some of the best local firefighters. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any assistance installing your alarm. Riverstone is home to the most young families in New South Wales. It’s crucial that we keep each other safe.”

AJ Bush calls time on Riverstone plant

FAMILY and Australian-owned

retail and wholesale butchers and meat by-product rendering com-

pany, AJ Bush & Sons, is winding down its Riverstone protein recovery plant after 70 years, due to urban encroachment and a difficult economy.

Head of Rendering at the plant’s operating company Bush’s Proteins, Cameron Bush, said a build-up of residential development and the impending release of land in the area for more housing make it impossible for it to remain.

“The facility in Sydney’s north-west is now losing a substantial amount of money,” Mr Bush said.

“In fact, aggregation of by-products alone at the Riverstone site is now costing the business up to $100,000 per week.

“These financial pressures have only increased since we voluntarily reduced operations in December last year, due to

“Regrettably,

will be made redundant, along

with impacting some subcontractors who will lose our business after working with us for many years.”

All AJ Bush’s collection, aggregation and processing was phased out in May, and the site’s processing equipment will be decommissioned and removed.

“It’s a difficult decision for a family company to make as we’ve been a part of the community since the 1950s, but Riverstone is no longer a semi-rural fringe suburb,” Mr Bush said.

Mr Bush said there would be no impact on other parts of the group, and some of the processing equipment could be utilised at its other meat by-product protein recovery plant in Beaudesert, Queensland.

Bush’s Proteins will continue to work with the Environmental Protection Agency to responsibly manage the wind down.

Demerit point rewarding local drivers

OTORISTS in the Mount Druitt

MElectorate are reaping the reward of their safe driving through the NSW Government’s demerit point return trial.

Data broken down by Postcode shows 7317 drivers in the 2770 postcode have seen a demerit point removed from their licence for maintaining a 12-month spotless driving record.

In the Blacktown Local Government Area, a total of 52511 drivers have had a demerit point wiped – a meaningful reward for families and community members who depend on their cars.

More than 1.2 million drivers qualified for the demerit point reward for maintaining a clear record during the initial 12-month period up to 16 January 2024.

The demerit return trial has been extended for a second year as the NSW Government continues to sharpen its focus on road safety in 2024 amid a rising road toll.

Member for Mount Druitt, Edmond Atalla said: “Earning the removal of a demerit point can mean a lot, especially to motorists who rely on their cars to drive the kids to school or to get to

work.”

“It’s great to see drivers rewarded for their safe driving. Our community knows how important road safety is and this program is driving that message home.

“With the demerit point return trial extended for another year, let’s keep the momentum going and ensure we’re focusing on driving safely every day.”

TWO YYEARS ON AND THE RESULTS ARE CLEAR We’re building a better future

THE 22 of May marked two years since the Albanese Labor Government came into office. During this time, we have focused on supporting Australians by addressing the cost of living and building a better future.

The Albanese Government is committed to easing pressures faced by many Australians right now. In communities across the country – including in Northwest Sydney - we have provided relief through cheaper childcare, fee-free TAFE, and efforts to boost wages.

Our government is proud of the progress we’ve made in strengthening Medicare. We’ve opened 58 free Urgent Care Clinics nationwide, with more to come, and we’ve invested in bulk-billing and reducing the cost of medicine.

Labor is dedicated to supporting all Australians, especially those in need community who need our help most. We’ve increased Rent Assistance, Jobseeker, and the

Single Parent Payment. We’re also working to make housing more affordable by building more homes in Northwest Sydney and across the country.

I’m also particularly proud of the $1.9B invest ment the

Albanese Government has made to upgrade and build roads in Western Sydney. This includes $260M for Richmond Road and $220M for Garfield Road East, helping to support our community’s growth and

reducing commute times. Equality for women is central to our work. We have provided more support for women escaping violence and have worked to reduce the gender pay gap to its lowest level ever.

Australians voted for action on climate change, and we’ve responded by committing to net zero by 2050 and investing in domestic solar panel production.

There’s still more to do, and the 2024 Budget builds on our progress with:

• Tax cuts for every taxpayer.

• $300 off energy bills for every household.

• 29 more free Medicare Urgent Care Clinics.

• $3 billion in student debt relief.

• A freeze on PBS medicine costs.

• Superannuation on paid parental leave.

SCHOOL’S BOOSTS ENROLMENTS WITH TECH APPROACH

Transforming the student experience

CUTTING-edge technologies for 21st century teaching has caused a school in Western Sydney dramatically grow its enrolments.

Australian Christian College in Marsden Park recently unveiled its high-tech learning hub wing with the latest features delighting its 650 secondary students who will be taught how to utilise them.

The hub has two film production studios where they can shoot and edit footages, two podcast studios, a Virtual Reality lab, separate Robotics and Mac labs – where students are shown every tech tool they need to produce media genres used in today’s world of digital technology.

Opening the hub is meant to upskill the students even before they start an arts or STEM degree at university, making the school attractive to families with enrolments “incredibly growing” three times since 2019, ACC principal Brendan Corr said.

“These new facilities put us in an ideal position as educators to prepare our students for the rapidly changing workforce they will enter,” Mr Corr said.

“They’ll have access to a teaching environment that will engage, challenge and delight them.”

The hub comes at a time when the world of education is embracing 21st century innovative teaching methodologies and integrating technology as tools into the classroom, Mr Corr said.

The school’s new hub became a reality through the Building Grants Assistance Scheme program funded by the NSW government.

At the opening, Mr Corr invited the NSW minister for education and early learning, Prue Car, Blacktown City Council members, school officials,

teaching staff and the excited students with their families to celebrate the opening.

Mr Corr toured them to the three-storey high-tech learning hub fitted out with a range of learning facilities to accommodate over 650 students enrolled in the secondary school section of ACC which caters for students from Kindergarten and Primary school levels.

The new hub building will accommodate secondary students and even younger students whose interests are include the innovative technologies at the school.

“While the Secondary building will

accommodate over 650 students, both are welcome additions to the community and will continue to ensure that students are well known, well-loved and well taught,” Mr Corr said.

“We’re thankful to the State Government for the funding assistance to provide our school community with these campus enhancements.

“Students will have access to the buildings immediately, getting their hands on high-tech equipment and brand-new classrooms with the support and oversight of fulltime industry professionals.”

The school applied for the grant to upgrade their teaching facilities follow-

ing the wishes of parents in Western Sydney surveyed by McCrindle Research in 2019, Mr Corr said.

More than 73 percent of parents whose children are enrolled in various schools in Western Sydney are “looking for the integration of technology and critical thinking skills into their child’s education,” Mr Corr said.

The school in Marsden Park is among the 13 campuses run by the ACC across the country which also accepts students enrolling in distance education pathways.

STAY FIT WITHOUT THE GYM

8 tips for home workouts

STAYING fit and healthy doesn’t require a gym membership or expensive equipment. With a bit of creativity and commitment, you can achieve and maintain fitness at home, in your neighborhood, or even at the office. Here are several effective ways to stay fit without setting foot in a gym.

1. Embrace Bodyweight Exercises:

Bodyweight exercises are a fantastic way to build strength, flexibility, and endurance without any equipment. Exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks can be done anywhere and provide a full-body workout. Start with basic variations and gradually increase the intensity by adding more repetitions or trying advanced versions of these exercises. For instance, progress from regular squats to jump squats or from knee push-ups to full push-ups.

2. Incorporate Cardiovascular Workouts:

Cardiovascular exercise is crucial for heart health and overall fitness. You don’t need a treadmill or elliptical machine to get your heart pumping. Simple activities like brisk walking, running, cycling, or jumping rope can effectively improve your cardiovascular fitness. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. If you’re short on time, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be a highly effective alternative. HIIT involves short bursts of intense activity followed by brief recovery periods and can be done with exercises like sprinting, burpees, or mountain climbers.

3.

Utilize Home Fitness Videos and Apps:

There is a plethora of fitness videos and mobile apps available that offer guided workouts for all fitness levels. Platforms like YouTube, fitness streaming services, and mobile apps provide access to workout routines ranging from yoga and Pilates to kickboxing and dance. Following a structured program can help keep you motivated and ensure you are working out effectively.

4. Practice Yoga and Pilates:

Yoga and Pilates are excellent for building strength, flexibility, and mental focus. They require minimal equipment—just a mat and some comfortable clothing. These practices emphasize bodyweight resistance and controlled movements, making them ideal for home workouts. There are many online classes and tutorials available that can guide you through various routines, whether you’re a beginner or more advanced.

5. Engage in Outdoor Activities:

Outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, kayaking, or even gardening can provide a great workout while also offering the benefits of fresh air and nature. These activities often engage multiple muscle groups and improve cardiovascular health. Plus, spending time outdoors can boost your mood and reduce stress.

6. Stay Active Throughout the Day:

Incorporating more movement into your daily routine can significantly impact your fitness levels. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or cycle to work, or do quick stretching exercises during breaks. Even small changes, like standing instead of sitting while working or walking during phone calls, can add up to improved fitness over time.

7. Create a Home Workout Space:

Designating a specific area in your home for exercise can help you stay committed to your fitness routine. This space doesn’t need to be large—a corner of a room will suffice. Equip it with a mat, resistance bands, dumbbells, or any other small fitness equipment you have. Having a dedicated space can make it easier to stick to a regular workout schedule.

8. Stay Accountable:

Finding ways to stay accountable can help you maintain your fitness routine. Consider working out with a friend or family member, joining an online fitness community, or keeping a workout journal. Setting specific, measurable goals can also keep you motivated and track your progress.

in Western Sydney Lowering your D ABETES RISK

Western Sydney is a known diabetes hotspot with rates far higher than the NSW average. The region is home to over one million adults, and NSW Health estimates 13% of them are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 38% are at high risk of developing diabetes1

Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD) is a collaborative initiative led by the Western Sydney Local Health District, Western Sydney Primary Health Network, Diabetes Australia, and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

This year WSD is celebrating 10 years and is dedicated to enhancing diabetes prevention and management efforts through a series of partnerships and innovative programs. The WSD team provide educational resources to educate the community on the high rates of type 2 diabetes in Western Sydney, prevention and how they can detect it early.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose (blood sugar) in the blood. This is normally due to low insulin levels or ineffective insulin which normally helps break down the glucose. Over time, high blood sugar levels can cause long-term damage to your heart, kidneys, eyes and feet.

If people with prediabetes lose 2kg and keep it off, then one in three people will not progress to getting diabetes.

If people with diabetes lose 10% of their bodyweight, in the first six years of diagnoses, 80% of them can achieve remission.

The haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) is a blood test used to assess how well your glucose has been controlled over the previous few months. If people with diabetes can keep their HbA1c levels less than 7% and other heart risk factors low, they can reduce their risk of complications from the disease, similar to those without diabetes.

CURRENT Socceroo Captain, Maty Ryan, will journey back to Blacktown City next Friday, June 7th, for a meet and greet with all the Blacktown City FC Juniors.

Blacktown City is where it all started for Maty Ryan who commenced his football journey in Under 11’s for Blacktown City (see photos below).

His Junior career was boosted as an Under 15 when current Blacktown City Head of Football, Mark Crittenden, defied some criticism to stick with his young goalkeeper as he sensed something special in the youngster. Maty Ryan made his Senior debut with Blacktown City in 2010 and was quickly signed by the Central Coast Mariners the following year.

A true Blacktown City Junior, the Socceroo Captain is scheduled to meet all the Blacktown City Juniors at the Hudson Hotel from 4:30 to 6pm on the 7th Australia Cup 2024 - Blacktown City qualified for the Final 32 of the 2024 Australia Cup with a resounding 5-1 win in Round 7 over Inter Lions on Tuesday night. Danny Choi is working his way back into form with two goals on the night. Grant Lynch, Joey Gibbs

and Jak O’Brien also scored. Football Australia will announce the fixtures for the Main Round in late June once all other preliminary rounds are played.

“One of the goals for 2024 was to qualify for the final 32 of the Australian competition and despite a number on injuries we have done that”, said Coach Crittenden. “The next task is to keep progressing and duplicate our form in 2017 where we defeated the Central Coast Mariners before losing out to the West Sydney Wanderers in the final rounds”, he added.

Waratah Cup – The win over the Inter Lions also keeps Blacktown in the running of the Waratah Cup, which determines the NSW Champion. Still in contention is Apia, NWS Spirit, Rockdale City Suns, Marconi, Phoenix and Sydney United.

Back to Blacktown Day – Sunday, June 23rd will signify a ‘Back to Blacktown Day’ for all former Senior players of the club. All current Blacktown City Juniors will also be in attendance to witness the Senior Men host rivals and current NSW Premier Leaders, Rockdale. Game time is 3pm with Under 20’s at 1pm.

Blacktown City VS St George FC, Sunday, June 2nd, 3pm – Blacktown City Senior Men continue their 2024 Premiership campaign this Sunday with a Round 17 game against St George FC. After a tough 3-1 loss to Apia last week, Blacktown Coach Mark Crittenden will look to get a win and keep pace with the Premiership leaders - Round 17 Preview - NPL Men's NSW - NPL Men's NSW (nplnsw.com.au)
