“At our previous home our friends were moving away and the quiet, friendly neighbourhood was changing … we had been on the list at St Hedwig since 2016 and while we looked at other retirement villages, St Hedwig was the one that ticked all of our boxes. All of the things we lost in our old neighbourhood we have re-discovered at St Hedwig.

For us, St Hedwig has always felt like home. Both of my parents lived in the village between 1987 and 2010. We were able to visit as often and whenever we wished and they received tremendous care at the aged care facility on site. My parents and I have been connected with this community since it was first established, so moving to St Hedwig has been a homecoming of sorts.

WESTINVEST = WESTSHAMBLES Grants program slammed by review

THE NSW Government is accepting all the recommendations made by the NSW Auditor-General in her damning review of WestInvest grants scheme.

The Auditor-General’s performance audit investigated the integrity and design of the $5B WestInvest program established by the previous NSW Liberal/National Government.

The report found:

• The areas of focus for WestInvest were decided by Ministers and their staff without advice from agencies.

• Funding advice from the WestInvest steering committee was not followed by the then Treasurer.

• Justifications for key funding decisions were not documented.

• Multiple projects were allocated funding despite being assessed as ineligible or unsuitable.

• The process for assessing applications was not agreed between government agencies and the then Treasurer.

The Perrottet Government created WestInvest to purportedly stimulate economic recovery in the Western Sydney local government areas most affected by COVID-19 lockdowns.

The money used came from privatising the WestConnex motorway. Then Treasurer Matt Kean oversaw administering the program.

NSW Labor went to the last state election promising to redirect $3B from the government projects stream towards rebuilding Western Sydney schools and hospitals but said it would not make changes to the $2B community and council streams of the program.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said: “The former government’s process for

allocating funding obtained from the sale of WestConnex was rushed, lacking in oversight and inequitable.

“We are directing $3B of this funding to rebuilding Western Sydney schools and hospitals as we promised to do before the election, in the best interests of the community.

“While the process was poorly managed by the former government, we remain committed to honouring the remaining $2 billion in community and council grants awarded to local organisations who followed the process.”

Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby MP said: “Our area is lacking critical infrastructure to support

the massive uplift in population because no funding has been allocated and now we have proof the Liberal Government redirected money from Westinvest based on political advantage rather than community need.”

Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali said, WestInvest funding was created through the selloff the West Connex leaving Western Sydney residents with escalating tolls for the next 40 years.

“Community organisations and councils spent money and resources within a very limited time to put in a detailed proposal. We now find that the former Liberal government didn’t follow due process or any transparency in the selection process.”

An upgrade to St Agnes Catholic High

THE NSW Government will deliver a $3,183,484 grant to St Agnes Catholic High School, Rooty Hill for the refurbishment and construction of school facil ities.

The funding is part of the Government’s Building Grants As sistance Scheme (BGAS), which is designed to help local schools build, extend or upgrade facilities to provide more student places in growing communities and areas of greatest need.

The BGAS scheme is in addition to the Government’s record $8.8B investment in new and upgraded public schools over the next four years.

SydWest welcomes new board members

BLACKTOWN based SydWest Multicultural Services has welcomed Sandra Casinader and Kim Heng to its Board of Directors.

Sandra is the Group Head of Enterprise Learning and Capability for the Westpac Group where she is accountable for the organisation’s learning strategy, capability frameworks and learning governance as well as enterprise-wide data and digital programs.

The St Agnes Catholic High School, Rooty Hill community is helping to fund the $4,547,834 project which includes:

• Refurbishment of heritage administration and staff building.

• Construction of staff facilities, student wellbeing facilities and covered walkways.

SUPPORT FOR THE NEW BLACKTOWN QUARTER Community consulted over vision

LOCAL MPS and business have backed the community consultation by Walker Corporation for the recently announced Blacktown Quarter.

Walker Corporation has revealed their Blacktown city centre redevelopment will be called Blacktown Quarter alongside the launch of a series of community surveys to be undertaken in NSW’s largest city.

In the announcement, Walker managing director and chief executive officer, David Gallant paid tribute to their late founder Lang Walker AO, whose vision will transform Blacktown into a new world-class city centre for Western Sydney.

“Lang was passionate about Walker delivering a new town centre for Blacktown linking people-friendly spaces with thousands of new jobs, healthcare and learning opportunities and his vision has become our reality,” Mr Gallant said.

Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali has been a strong advocate for transforming Blacktown with pioneering initiatives such securing Australian Catholic University multi-faculty campus, redevelopment of Warwick Lane precinct, BEST and animal rehoming facility.

Mr Bali said: “Blacktown Quarter has the opportunity for our city to continue the transformational journey and I welcome community consultation.

“Every area has its own local unique qualities and characteristics which can be realised through comprehensive community consultation.

“Blacktown Quarter can be the gateway development for a futuristic inspired central living district for our city.”

Blacktown residents will have the opportunity to have their say in an online survey to provide input into what they want their future city centre to look like.

President of the Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, Trevor Oldfield said Blacktown is a growing city and the Blacktown Quarter development will create a vibrant and dynamic community that will attract visitors from all over the region.

“The business community, along with council, backs this development.”

Blacktown consists of 54 residential suburbs, home to over 395,000 people, making it the largest city by population in NSW and representing around 188 birthplaces and 182 different languages. Half the population is under 35 years of age.

The Blacktown Quarter development will deliver more than 1,000 construction jobs over five years and permanently add more than 4,500 jobs and over $1B annually to the city’s local economy.

I’m proof of resilience, says Simone

AFAMILY life fraught with heartaches and violence left Blacktown resident Simone Cunningham jobless for many years.

She recently turned 40, beaming with news of her first ever grandchild on the way from one of her six children.

And this brave woman is telling everyone she meets that anyone can get out of the rough, she’s a proof.

Ms Cunningham opened up about her horrific experiences following the release of the Centre for Western Sydney Bridging the Divide Report which found less than half of Blacktown’s adult women can qualify for jobs in rapidly changing workplaces today.

IThe report revealed women in 13 suburbs in Western Sydney, including Blacktown, has the lowest proportion of women or 47.1 percent having a Certificate 3 or higher educational attainment compared to 61.8 percent across Greater Sydney.

Fairfield has the lowest at 29.4 percent or one in every three women residents has held Certificate 3 or higher educational attainment making it harder for them to compete in the job market, the report said.

Ms Cunningham has been looking for a job that not only pays the bills, but she can proudly share her hard-earned educational qualification to turn her future better than what it was.

“I was unfortunately sexually assaulted at the age of 13, and at the age of 15, I got into my first violent

relationship,” Ms Cunningham said.

“In those relationships, I was never allowed to do anything or go anywhere. I was not allowed to go out and seek employment on my own accord if my partner

N the suburb of Dean Park, a new fitness centre is helping locals get their body and mind back in shape.

They’re not a typical gym, but more of a movement and recovery centre that fitness coaches Norman and Ayling Darjani created to lend their combined passion and wealth of experience in fitness training.

One more reason the dynamic couple’s Fitness Fanatics centre is well-liked among the suburb’s less than 4,000 locals is members and non-members can enrol their children in a variety of Kids Program to keep them fit as well.

“At Fitness Fanatics, our commitment is to provide a secure and supportive environment for all our community members to come together in their pursuit of health and wellness,” Mr Darjani said.

“As a pioneering centre at the heart of Blacktown area, and potentially Western Sydney, our centre distinguishes itself by not merely being a gym, but rather a Movement and Recovery Centre.

“The Blacktown area is flooded with gyms, but we had a vision after serving the community for over 12 years, to create a safe space where everyday people like us can go into fitness training without being judged no matter their fitness state.”

Mrs Darjani said she and Norman share an “unwavering dedication to imparting our knowledge to support the transformation of individuals into their optimal selves.”

Those who are new entrants to a fitness program may find it daunting but at Fitness Fanatics’ centre, Mrs Darjani said every person turning up first time and unsure how to use the range of equipment are coached by skilled trainers.

“Gyms can be a lonely place, and some feel intimidated and uncomfortable, but we have mature caring coaches at every class who hold your hand in the beginning months to

ensure you’re doing the exercises correctly, and you feel comfortable at all times,” Mrs Darjani said.

The centre caters for small or large group training, select fitness workshops for all ages, variety of kids’ programs, nutrition tips and life coaching.

It also opened a state-of-theart recovery area for members to immerse in hot and cold therapy, to experience traditional hot stone sauna and ice bath, not being offered anywhere in the area.

Concerned local parents were offered solutions such as having their children training for physical activities that are also fun to do such as martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and mobility.

“Our goal is for all in our community to have access to an affordable fitness facility so they can reach their best selves,” Ms Samaras said.

Ms Cunningham enrolled at Macquarie Community College as an adult learner to sharpen her skills after receiving a Year 9 leaving certificate. She is now among the 85 percent of women students at the college which offers a range of courses designed to upskill its 5,000 students for jobs industries need, especially women, so they can compete in roles that require skills level at Certificate 3 and above.

Speaking at the forum, Plumpton High School teacher Tahlia McKenzie said students are actively embracing opportunities offered through the BEST program to look after their own health.

“Kids are coming to BEST, they are out here playing, taking opportunities that they have been given to support their mental health and well-being,” Ms McKenzie, director of Super 6 High Performance group told the forum.

“They have been given, as part of the community, an easy access to high quality facilities that they want to spend hours using. BEST means that good sports facilities are inclusively available to all.”

Bill Owen, Blacktown District Soccer Football Association chairperson, said having BEST puts Blacktown City on the map.

“Council should be commended for building BEST it puts the City on the map in terms of how sport is supported,” he said.

“Council’s historic vision and passion for community sport is complemented by BEST and what it offers for the future for both players and sports clubs.”

In his opening speech, Blacktown Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said: “Council shares our community’s passion for sport and an active lifestyle. Community sport plays a huge role in the health and well-being of our residents. We want everyone in our community to be more active more often.”

The MCC started in Sydney in 1950 as an adult community education provider in English language and literacy and has expanded into a registered career training centre for jobseekers and employers.

While sports clubs encourage residents of all ages to participate in activities at all levels, Mayor Bleasdale said, Council is enabling these clubs to utilise the BEST facility along with services offered by program partners on the site.

BEST has provided world class sporting facilities available to all, education and treatment facilities, accommodation and an award-winning playground, he said.

Blacktown International Sports Park director Dr Neil Gibson said BEST is the “model for the community centre of the future” integrating essential services in education, health, and physical activity conveniently located under one roof.

General manager of Delaware North Stuart Ford said their company took part in the BEST program to provide accommodation and food options, including the café next to the children’s physical literacy playground.

For Lisa Soames of the Minchinbury Little Athletics, she attended the Forum to keep updated on BEST and see how the Council is continuing to support local community sport.

“It’s great to hear first-hand from Council about what is going on,” Ms Soames said.

“Council is looking after the sporting fields the community uses, upgrading lighting and fixing issues often before we have to ask.”

The forum also heard more future on BEST from Professor David Greene of the Australian Catholic University’s School of Behavioural and Health Sciences, exercise physiologist Nikki Lodge of Sydney West Sports Medicine, WentWest and Western Sydney Primary Health Network CEO Michelle Quinn, and Australian Sports Foundation’s chief partnership officer Ryan Holloway.

Reducing wait times in EDs

LAST week marked the inaugural meeting of NSW’s Emergency Department (ED) Taskforce, uniting clinical experts to address lengthy wait times in the state’s bustling EDs. With over three million attendances annually and rising serious cases, the Taskforce aims to ensure timely, quality care for NSW residents. Priorities include refining care models, optimizing workforce strategies, and reducing avoidable ED visits. The Taskforce, chaired by Dr. Trevor Chan and Professor Matthew Daly, will engage regularly with stakeholders to drive improvements.

Theory about conspiracy theories

MANY individuals embrace conspiracy theories, but a study led by Dr. Mathew Marques from La Trobe University dis-

pels notions of a growing ‘pandemic of misinformation.’ Surveying nearly 500 Australians and New Zealanders over six months, researchers found beliefs remained relatively stable over time.

Participants considered theories ranging from 9/11 to COVID-19, revealing some rare converts and apostates. Despite occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic, belief in microchip-laden vaccines remained low. The study underscores the nuanced nature of conspiracy belief formation, challenging the notion of a rapid descent into conspiratorial thinking.

Doctors back anti-smoking drug

THE Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) backs a new smoking cessation drug, Cytisine, as it awaits approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration. RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins emphasizes its potential impact amid upcoming removals of nicotine replacement therapy options from public schemes. Highlighting Cytisine’s proven efficacy and minimal side effects, she urges support for its scheduling. With concerns over rising nicotine use, especially among youth, Dr Higgins advocates for expanded cessation tools while encouraging individuals to consult their GPs for tailored support in quitting.

Defibrillator access on country trains

REGIONAL passengers now have easier access to potentially life-saving healthcare with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) available on all NSW TrainLink coach services. Following a successful trial, the NSW Labor Government completed the rollout in partnership with St John Ambulance NSW. These devices,

accessible to all without prior training, significantly improve survival chances during emergencies, particularly in remote areas with longer response times. This initiative aims to save lives and offers peace of mind to passengers.

Action to reduce harm from gaming

AS concerns over late-night gaming and its associated harm rise, the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) has revised Guideline 16 on late-night gaming applications. With a focus on minimizing gaming-related harm, ILGA assesses applications under the Gaming Machines Act 2001. Evidence highlights risks, especially after 2 am. ILGA Chairperson Caroline Lamb emphasises the need for effective measures by venues and ILGA’s authority to impose conditions to mitigate harm.

Railway crossings set for improvement

NSW railway crossings are set for improvements through the Australian Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund (RLCUF). With a focus on enhancing safety and reducing crashes, the $160 million commitment aims to fund upgrades across regional areas. The NSW Government’s allocation of $28 million will support projects such as retro-reflective boom gates and updated signage. Multi-lingual cause for celebration

AS one of the most diverse cities in Australia, Blacktown has a large proportion multi-cultural residents that collectively are fluent in about 180 languages.

And that is why every February 21 the International Mother Language Day is celebrated here with pride, Blacktown City mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said.

“Nowhere in Australia is the promotion of diversity of language and culture more important than in Blacktown City,” Clr Bleasdale said in his speech at

Cthe Village Green’s gathering for Mother Language Day.

“Language is so often the centre of our cultures and by retaining our Mother Language we retain the links to our Mother culture.

“We celebrate our diversity and enjoy our differences through our food, stories, art and dance, and so often the common thread linking all those things that distinguish our cultures is our Mother language.”

The mayor also urged his audi-

ence “to give a particular focus on the preservation of First Nations languages” because the Indigenous people are significant to the country’s identity and history.

The internationally recognised day aims to promote the preservation and protection of all ‘home’ languages used by communities across the world.

History

A violent conflict in Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 21, 1952, sow the

seeds for the world’s celebration of International Mother Language Day since 2000.

Four students were killed, and many people were injured while campaigning against the imposition of Urdu as national language.

The protesters demanded the official recognition of their native Bangla language by the then Government of Pakistan.

The day was formally recognised by UNESCO in 1999.

Grants for suicide prevention

OMMUNITY groups undertaking activities which reduce stigma and enhance help seeking to reduce the risk of suicide are encouraged to apply for Southwestern Sydney PHN’s current round of Suicide Prevention Grants.

Grants of between $50,000 and $200,000 are being offered under

the Targeted Regional Initiatives for Suicide Prevention program to eligible groups across Southwestern Sydney.

Initiatives delivered through the grants will engage with individuals and/or groups from priority populations to reduce their risk of suicide through early interventions which

improve mental health, give a better understanding of suicide, reduce stigma surrounding suicide and build community resilience.

The funding period of the grants is 1 June 2024 to 31 December 2025.

Council’s asbestos assurance message

IF asbestos is identified in any of Blacktown City Council’s 800 plus parks and 5,000 facilities, an immediate investigation by authorities will be conducted for community safety.

The urgent action from the state’s largest council comes as more than 24 sites, at least six are situated in Western Sydney, have been identified at risk or possibly at risk of asbestos debris.

The taskforce initiated by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, Department of Health and Department of Education is conducting the assessments.

Four schools, a hospital, a shopping centre and a park owned by Transport NSW located in Western Sydney are currently undergoing testing by the taskforce with results to be made available on the EPA website.

“If asbestos is identified anywhere in Blacktown City, Council staff [will] promptly investigate,” a council spokesman said.

“Any discovery of asbestos on a Council owned site puts into place a process where the site is closed, and Environmental Health Officers investigate.

“We utilise a list of contractors that includes Occupational Hygienists and licensed asbestos removalists to deal with any asbestos.”

Since 2020, the spokesman said, Council has specifically instructed their suppliers that mulches for its facilities must originate from tree-based material and supplier company certified by the EPA prior.

When council conducts ongoing tree maintenance across its 54 suburbs, the spokesman said council also generates its own mulch supply.

The procedure is being done to “avoid use of material that is sourced from building or construction waste or other waste

like wooden pallets.”

Asbestos testings are taking place at Westmead Christian Grammar in Westmead, St Luke’s Catholic College in Marsden Park, Penrith Christian School in Orchard Hills, Mt Annan Christian College in Mt Annan, St John of God Hospital in North Richmond, Woolworths in Kellyville and a Transport for NSW park area at Wiley Park.

The EPA said it is providing this advice to keep everyone concerned abreast of developments particularly parents and students at those schools and the public connected to those sites so they can keep their communities safe.

St Luke’s Catholic College in Marsden Park was closed day while those schools that remained open are advised to keep students and staff away from garden beds and around the site following testing results of bonded asbestos presence in some sites.

EPA testing officers are on the ground,

and they are under supervision of the NSW Government Asbestos Taskforce which includes experts from NSW Health and NSW Department of Education.

EPA has advised landowners around the identified sites to put in place measures to prevent anyone accessing their site and to begin removal of the contaminated mulch.

EPA will advise what further actions can be taken, but parents of students in identified schools are advised to contact their school directly for updates on the situation.

WESTERN SYDNEY DESERVES BETTER Tax cuts right for our times

WESTERN Sydney is as vast and dynamic as it is diverse and interesting.

It’s enormous, encompassing communities that have unique experiences and challenges.

I’m very critical of commentators who ham-fistedly try to describe Western Sydney as if it’s one uniform place.

Blanket statements and generalisations don’t capture the diversity of the West.

But forgive me for breaking my rule to say there’s one uniform statement that rings true: Western Sydney deserves to keep more of what it earns.

Western Sydney will be boosted by the Albanese Government’s legislationwhich passed the lower house of Parliament this week - to give every taxpayer a tax cut – an estimated 902,000 of them.

Nearly 9 in every 10 taxpayers in Western Sydney will receive a larger tax cut than under Scott Morrison’s proposal from five years ago.

The tax-cut for a worker on $80,000 would be worth more than $1,670 a year.

Tax cuts for workers in disability, retail, and transport sectors.

For health and aged-care workers. For accountants, teachers, software programmers and tradies – for every taxpayer.

While our plan is responsibly targeted to boost support for hard working families, it delivers for every taxpayer –right up and down the income ladder.

An early educator, aged-care worker or a cleaner earning $50,000 will now receive a tax cut worth over $900 a year.

Under the Coalition’s alternative, many workers — often working parttime with families — would have got nothing. Not a dollar.

All our wonderful nurses and transport workers will get a tax cut –with over 95 per cent of those taxpayers getting a larger tax cut because of Labor’s plan.

Australians earning over $150,000 a year will also receive a tax cut of at least $3,700.

These are just a few examples of how our plan will make a meaningful difference to workers and households across Western Sydney grappling with cost-of-living pressures.

Levels of mortgage stress

I know – because I represent a community in North-West Sydney with high levels of mortgage stress.

Residents – many of whom are economic migrants who moved to Australia for opportunities for themselves and their children – are asking for Government to do more to help.

To say to Western Sydney families there’s nothing Government can do would be a furphy.

The Federal Government is in a position to help – without making the economic situation worse by adding to inflation.

Our bigger tax cuts for more Australians deliver on that objective.

It complements our work to deliver electricity bill relief, cheaper childcare, medicines and GP visits.

We have increased rent assistance, delivered fee-free TAFE places, and

extended free broadband for school children with no connectivity at home.

Labor has also launched an ACCC inquiry into supermarket prices and allegations of price gouging, the first of its kind since 2008.

Helping Australians with the cost of living is our number one priority because if the cost of essentials rises too fast, people can’t plan or save for the future.

Unlike the relentlessly negative Coalition, the Albanese Government is saying yes to supporting Western Sydney families to keep more of what they earn.

As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says, our new tax cuts are the right decision at the right time, for the right reasons.

That’s why this Government listened to families in Western Sydney – and acted.

Healthicare is a new health service located at the Blacktown Exercise Sports and Technology hub (BEST) that aims to help people in Western Sydney. It is supported by WentWest in partnership with the Mt Druitt Medical Practitioners Association

Healthicare uses a new way of working together called a “neighbourhood-based model of care”. This means that GPs and other health professionals work together to provide better care for people who need it most. This includes people who are very unwell and have many health problems.

BLACKTOWN City started their chase for the 2024 Championship with a statement game, defeating the 2023 Premiers, Apia Leichhardt 6-3 in front of a jubilant home crowd.

Blacktown head of Football Mark Crittenden could not ask for a better way to start the season as his side let all know they will be a force this season.

Leading 6-1 with ten minutes to go, Blacktown let two loose goals find the back of the net to take some shine off the win.

Playing without Captain Mario Shabow and star Danny Choi, Blacktown hit their paces twenty minutes into the match to lead 3-1 at the halftime break.

Jak O’Brien, the second leading goal scorer in the competition last season, continued his hot form with two first half goals.

O’Brien picked up his hat trick in the second half with another goal to give Blacktown a 4-1 lead.

Joey Gibbs, the all-time second leading goal scorer for Blacktown and back home after three years playing overseas, was in the thick of it from the start proving a handful for the reigning Premiers.

Late in the second half he set up a goal for his long-time running mate Travis Major, to take an unassailable 6-1 lead.

Major, the all-time leading goal scorer for Blacktown City, showed the combination will be not only exciting but lethal for opposing teams.

Last week, Blacktown travelled away to play newcomers to the NSW Premier League, St George FC.

As predicted, Blacktown dominated the game but the goal scoring flurry dried up as the team could not find the back of the net.

St George’s tactic to pack the defensive end of the field was proving to be successful as numerous attacks on goal proved fruitless.

In the end, St George was happy with the one point from a 0-0 draw while Coach Crittenden was frustrated his side let three points slip by.

Blacktown City is back at home on Saturday, March 2nd hosting their archrivals Sutherland Sharks.

Sutherland are coming off a hotly contested 0-0 draw against NWS Spirit FC last week in a game that saw three red cards issues.

Blacktown and Sutherland are always a heated contest and Saturday will be no different as Blacktown looks to get back to winning football games and the Sharks look for their first win of the season.

It will be a tough week for Blacktown City as they will back up on

Wednesday, March 6 in an away fixture with Manly before coming back home to host Wollongong in their first Sunday game of the season on the March 10.

KELLYVILLE Ridge youth Nicolas Ballas is bouncing his way into the record books.

The talented athlete was named World Champion in the 15-16 Men’s Synchro Trampoline - along with his jumping partner Brock Batty from Victoria - at the 2023 Trampoline World Age Group Championships held in Birmingham, England last November.

Nicolas has been involved in trampoline gymnastics since the age of five and currently trains at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatics Centre in Rooty Hill.

He had a stellar season throughout 2023, taking out the State and National Championship titles and ending the year at the World Championships where he competed in Individual Trampoline, Double Mini Trampoline and Synchronised Trampoline.

Synchronised trampoline consists of two gymnasts on two separate trampolines performing the exact same routine of 10 skills at the same time.

Each gymnast is judged on execution, time of flight (how long they are in the air), degree of difficulty, horizontal displacement (where on the trampoline they land) and on the level of synchronisation.

This was Nicolas and Brock’s third time competing as a pair on the international stage.

Proud mum Argyro Ballas said what made the championship win even more special was the fact the boys can’t train together because they live in different states.

“They only got to train together in the two to three days immediately prior to the competition when they arrived in Birmingham,” Ms Ballas said.

“Plus, they only just managed to make it into the final because when

they managed to complete a routine in the qualifying rounds they were slightly out of synch in the first half, which compromised their score, and saw them qualify in eighth position. Only the top eight go through to the finals, so they were very lucky.”

But when it came to the finals the pair pulled it together and completed “the most amazing routine”, Ms Ballas said.

That took them straight through to the top and they held onto first place right through to the end of the competition.

“The final competitors were the team from France who completed a beautiful routine themselves, so waiting for their score to pop up on the screen felt like an eternity. They knew they had won a medal by that stage,

but the French score would determine whether they got gold or silver.

“Nicolas had a gut feeling they would hold on to the top position because their degree of difficulty was higher than the French, but because the synchro score plays a big role, he held his breath.”

When the scores were finally revealed, the French had won bronze, which meant Nicolas and Brock maintained the gold and were named World Champions.

“Their emotions just poured out,” the proud mum said. “They are the best of mates so for them to experience this

together, especially after the hiccups of their previous attempts, was the best feeling in the world.”

A Year 12 student Nicolas manages to find a balance between school work, his job as a junior gymnastics coach and four training sessions a week.

He was named the Gymnastics NSW Jr International Trampoline Athlete of the Year at the recent Gymnastics NSW annual awards presentation where he paid tribute to his coaches Jessie Tulett and Tom Holman as well as the head coach of the trampoline program at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatics Centre, Belinda Cox.
