WESTERN SYDNEY ZOO’S GLOW FESTIVAL

BNLACKTOWN Boys High and Blacktown Girls High are among the few most improved in Greater Sydney based on the 2023 Higher School Certificates results released by the NSW education department. The department used top two and top three band HSC data from the Centre of Education Statistics and Evaluation to recognise its most improved schools across the state. Top two bands include bands 5 and 6 for HSC standard courses and E3 and E4 for extension courses, while top three band include bands 4-6 (standard) and E2-E4 (extension). Blacktown Boys took top two and three bands while Blacktown Girls took top two bands to join other high schools with strong improvement in HSC results.

MONEY woes should not stop anyone from enjoying impressive sights and sounds at Western Sydney Zoo.

The popular zoo in Blacktown City’s tourist hub where glamourous pop music superstar Taylor Swift secretly last month with her Super Bowl champ boyfriend Travis Kelce has just unveiled its GLOW Festival.

This autumn after-dark festival is an impressive display of never-before-seen lightings that Sydney’s top creatives and techies have put together for the delight of the zoo’s tens of

thousands of followers.

The zoo management believes they can’t let zoo’s loyal fans down, particularly those reeling from the high cost of everything – such as rent, mortgage, basic groceries, and electricity.

A statement was released by the Sydney Zoo management, promising a half-price entry to the festival “to address the financial challenges facing many families, making it an affordable night for all.”

It means a typical family of four can go out for a night of entertainment at Sydney Zoo for half the cost of usual entry fee, or under $70 in total, so if they have spare $100, a family still have leftover change to

spend on food and drinks.

Adults’ entry now costs $19.99, kids up to 16 years old at $14.99 and children from two years old and under are free, and as a bonus, every ticket holder is entitled to free parking at the zoo.

“Recognising the demand for a local alternative to city-based light shows, Sydney Zoo saw an opportunity with GLOW to cater to the needs of residents in the west,” creative director Chris Rivett said.

“Since its debut in 2022, GLOW has drawn crowds of over 100,000 annually, solidifying its position as a cornerstone event in the city’s calendar.

“We’ve reimagined and expanded GLOW this year, creating an extraordinary experience for guests of all ages.

LOCALS WATCH QUESTION TIME IN ACTION Minister hosts Parliament event

CHIFLEY MP and Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic hosted a group of Blacktown residents to watch Question Time in Canberra recently and his guests amazed to see Prime Minister and politicians in action.

“I saw many different people, from different countries and backgrounds all working together in the one building,” first time visitor Osman Abdulrahaman, a migrant from Sudan, said.

“It was easy to see the Prime Minister [Anthony Albanese] and other parliamentary members, which is very different from Sudan.

“It made me feel that anyone can be a member of parliament one day if you want to help other Australians.”

Mr Abdulrahaman was among 25 representatives of migrant and refugee groups from the Blacktown area invited to see how the 151 members of parliament in the lower house and 76 senators in the upper house are working together as legislators.

The tour hosted by Mr Husic was part of NSW government’s civic funding grant to educate soon-to-be Australian citizens how the three tiers of governments are working together as a political system initiating and implementing changes by enacting legislations.

The group’s visit was made pos-

sible by Blacktown MP Stephen Bali nominating the SydWest Multicultural Settlement Program to receive $30,000 grant so it can facilitate educational tours for those getting ready to become Australian citizens.

For Rabia Johini, who came to Australia two years ago from Kabul, the parliament tour with Mr Husic opened her eyes to see a brighter future for girls and women from Afghanistan.

Ms Johini said while she has been

fortunate to have received earlier training to become a lawyer in Afghanistan, the current situation in the Middle East “prevented women and girls from going to school and to work.”

“‘It was good to see different people, different cultures, and women coming into the parliament,’ Ms Johini said.

“It was valuable to see Parliament House and Australian democracy in action.”

“When people understand the functions of all our tiers of government, agencies, departments, and courts they can engage more fully and confidently in the Australian community.

“This will put participants in a great position to be able to advocate and make representations on behalf of themselves or their communities.

“Ultimately the program aims to foster a sense of belonging, inclusion and empowerment so that our new arrivals can contribute meaningfully to the Australian society.’

Mr Meru said they appreciated Minister Husic taking time out of his schedule to meet the group and grateful to Mr Bali for nominating the project for funding under the Local Small Commitments Allocation Program.

Mr Meru said the funds will help SydWest design comprehensive civic and leadership courses, conduct awareness sessions and facilitate more field visits to parliaments in Canberra and at Macquarie Street and the Blacktown Council so they can get to know how their local government is run by councillors.

Efforts to clear the air continue

OFFENSIVE odour monitoring by environment and health authorities is continuing at the Eastern Creek landfill operated by Dial-A-Dump which has been recently ordered by the court to pay a hefty penalty for it.

More than 700 complaints have been lodged before the NSW Environmental Protection Agency coming from nearby residents traumatised by the “insufferable rotten egg” odour since 2021.

EPA regulatory operations director Jason Gordon said they expected “adequate controls should have been in place to collect landfill gas at the Eastern Creek facility to protect the community.”

“It is not acceptable for residents to suffer for months ongoing odours from industrial neighbours that impact their wellbeing and day-to-day [activities],” Mr Gordon said.

“Waste facilities have obligations under their licence to ensure potential odours have measures in place to counter any odour emissions.

“We know this incident was very traumatising for surrounding communities, but we want to thank them for their assistance in securing this outcome.”

Dial-A-Dump, a subsidiary of Bingo Industries, operates the Eastern Creek

landfill facility and developing the site into a recycling and renewable energy generating zone for Western Sydney. EPA and Blacktown City Council environmental health authorities have been inspecting the facility and conducting air monitoring following complaints from hundreds of residents in Eastern Creek, Horsley Park and Minchinbury. Their findings led to the Land and Environment Court issuing on March

26 a $280,000 fine to Dial-A-Dump, including paying $42,575 for EPA’s investigation cost and legal costs estimated at $365,000.

Blacktown City Council which has local jurisdiction over the suburbs impacted by the odour from the landfill will be awarded half of the $280,000 penalty to spend on environmental restoration project for impacted residential areas.

Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said

council environmental health officers have been involved for many years in the in-depth investigation of the odour source alongside EPA.

“The Court’s decision to allocate a portion of the penalty towards an environmental restoration project in Minchinbury is a positive step towards rectifying the harm caused,” Clr Bleasdale said.

“The EPA received around 750 complaints from residents in Sydney’s west about offensive rotten egg gas odours in 2021 coming from the company’s Eastern Creek landfill between March and June 2021.

“The residents’ complaints could not be clearer, for those affected the odour was insufferable. These penalties underscore the severity of the odour situation for our residents.

It is understood Council is in the process of identifying several projects to assist the impacted communities.

Mr Gordon said since odour investigations commenced, there have been limited odour complaints, but EPA will continue to conduct regular inspections and air monitoring to minimise further risks to nearby communities.

Sydney Water in Northwest

SYDNEY Water is delivering the Northwest Treatment Hub Growth Program starting with a $595M upgrade of Rouse Hill and Riverstone Water Resource Recovery Facilities in partnership with John Holland, Stantec and KBR.

The 10-year program will increase wastewater treatment capacity across three of Sydney Water’s Water Resource Recovery Facilities as Sydney’s northwest continues to grow, creating opportunity for an additional 200,000 new house connections.

Sydney Water Project Director, Bernard Clancy said the first stage of the Growth Program will cater for an additional 110,0000 households in the Rouse Hill and Riverstone WRRF catchment areas.

“Increasing the capacity at Rouse Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility is critical to allow for growth and handle the increase wastewater flows generated with the expanding population,” Mr Clancy said.

“Sydney Water is focused on getting the best environmental outcomes. This project will make sure the water we put back into local waterways is healthy, safe and protects the environment,” Mr Clancy said.

“Treatment upgrades will also be undertaken to improve the reliability of recycled water supply for the Rouse Hill Recycled Water Scheme and to maintain the health of local waterways and the Hawkesbury Nepean River.”

The first stage of the Growth Program also includes upgrades to Riverstone Water Resource Recovery Facility, with a new biosolids handling plant being built to ensure the ongoing beneficial reuse of product generated from the facility.

Design and procurement of critical pieces of equipment is now progressing and construction is expected to start in late 2024.

Battle of Vinegar Hill commemorated

ON March 5 1804, a group of more than 200 escaped convicts and a few settlers faced off against a contingent of British soldiers near Rouse Hill in Western Sydney in what became known as the Battle of Vinegar Hill.

Earlier this month, a commemoration ceremony was held at the Vinegar Hill Memorial in the Castlebrook Memorial Gardens, Rouse Hill, marking the 220th anniversary of that battle, the first between Europeans on Australian soil.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM led the commemoration along with the Irish Consul General in Sydney Rosie Kean, local historians, Councillors and members of Sydney’s Irish community.

The ceremony included the laying of three wreaths, the singing of both the Australian and Irish national anthems, speeches by Mayor Bleasdale and Consul General Kean, Irish pipe music performances and an historical perspective of the Battle of Vinegar Hill by the Secretary of Castle Hill Historical Society, Pam Wilson.

While Australia’s Battle of Vinegar Hill, or Vinegar Hill Rebellion, was fought in 1804, the seeds of the uprising can be traced to the bloody battle at Vinegar Hill in County Wexford, Ireland in 1798.

Thousands of Irish rebels were killed or captured by British troops in the battle regarded as a major turning point of the Irish rebellion. A number

of those rebels were transported to New South Wales and found their way to the Castle Hill Convict Farm

On 4 March 1804, 233 convicts, led by Philip Cunningham, a veteran of the 1798 rebellion, escaped from Castle Hill

TConvict Farm and planned to march on Parramatta and Sydney under the banner “liberty and equality”.

Martial law was declared and eventually Cunningham’s rebels were defeated by British troops in Australia’s Battle of Vinegar Hill. The leaders of the rebels were either killed in battle or executed.

The Vinegar Hill Monument was unveiled by former Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam on March 5, 1988.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Bleasdale said: “While both Battles of Vinegar Hill resulted in defeat of the rebels by British troops, they both shared a common spirit of rebellion and the fight for liberty and equality.

“The Vinegar Hill Monument here in Rouse Hill is not only a monument

to the Battle of Vinegar Hill but also a monument to liberty and equality and a monument to the pioneering spirit and determination of those early European settlers no matter what their nationality or social standing.”

Irish Consul General Rosie Kean said: “I am incredibly proud to be here, celebrating the battle of Vinegar Hill. Irish people feel at home here in the City of Blacktown and there are so many reasons for this, not the least of which is a shared culture.”

The commemoration ceremony was followed by an Irish Appreciation Day at The Fiddler, Rouse Hill to celebrate Blacktown City Council’s ‘Sister City’ relationship with Enniscorthy, County Wexford in Ireland, signed in August 2023.

Toongabbie Bridge funding committed

HE NSW Government has committed $2M to investigating improvements to Toongabbie Bridge, to help ease queuing and traffic delays on the rail overpass and local road networks adjacent to Toongabbie Station.

The State Minister for Transport, John Graham joined Dr Hugh McDermott, Member for Prospect, local residents and officials from Transport for NSW, for a site inspection of the Toongabbie Bridge in March, as part of the Minns Labor government’s funding to improve traffic flow in the Electorate of Prospect.

Toongabbie bridge is a key connecting corridor in the local Prospect Electorate and is a link to the major arterials between Seven Hills Road and the Cumberland Highway. Residents have been calling for upgrades to the bridge after years of inaction from the previous governments.

Minister Graham said that the NSW Government “has committed to ensuring that we are building and improving the local roads in our communities that we use every day, and improving Toongabbie Bridge is key.”

The project had originally been identified as a Transport for NSW

bridge project, however, the outcomes from the Toongabbie Improvement Works Strategic Business Case identified that solutions are dependent on local road upgrades.

Subsequently, the project was updated in scope to be led by the City of Parramatta and Cumberland City Council, relating to recommended local

road and intersection upgrade projects. Traffic modelling, design development, council consultation and cost analysis have now been completed, with the project handed over to City of Parramatta and Cumberland City Councils in November 2023. These councils will continue their planning of identified local road and intersection hot spot solutions.

Dr McDermott said; “Continuing this work will ultimately support the local community by easing congestion, improving traffic flow and travel times across Toongabbie Bridge and around Toongabbie Station.”

“My thanks go to Parramatta Council and Cumberland Council as well as Transport for NSW for looking at the future of Toongabbie Bridge so that we can get the plan right for the future of Toongabbie Bridge,” he said.

TWO BLACKTOWN HIGH SCHOOLS RECOGNISED

Most improved HSC results in 2023

Blacktown Boys took top two and three bands while Blacktown Girls took top two bands to join other high schools with strong improvement in HSC results topped by Killarney Heights High with top two and three bands and Matraville Sports High School with top three bands.

Education Secretary Murat Dizdar congratulated the schools, school leaders and students on their success.

“This is an outstanding result not only for the schools, but staff, students and their communities,” Mr Dizdar said.

strates an ongoing commitment to student and school success in the HSC, and the support of dedicated teaching staff to sustain it.

“These achievements do not happen in isolation. It is the collective efforts of a whole school community to provide outstanding learning experiences in every classroom that challenges and grows our students.”

Blacktown Boys principal David Calleja said they have been preparing the students to sit for HSC exams starting from Year 10 and 11.

“We conduct personalised interviews with students, their teachers and families, to plan the education pathway for both our ATAR and non-ATAR candidates,” Mr Calleja said.

their school was among those most improved in HSC results, this year’s students sitting for the exam are polishing up to match the encouraging results, Blacktown Girls High principal Maria Trimmis said.

“Blacktown Girls High School staff and students are extremely proud of our 2023 HSC cohort and their achievements.

“The staff have been focused on delivering structured and effective lesson design, promoting deep understanding, mastery of skills, and building confidence in our learners.

“Teachers can easily assess student progress and adjust instruction as needed, while students understand what they need to accomplish.

“Our current HSC cohort is excited to try and match or outdo the achievements of their 2023 alumni.”

Students eating the rainbow challenge

ACHALLENGE to always eat healthy foods sounds like a huge task for Marayong’s St Andrews Primary School students.

But don’t be surprised if these kids and their parents have taken it on board with ample guidance from teacher Judith McMurrich.

Each day at school, their lunch boxes are packed with more fruits and vegetables inspired by the colours of the rainbow, and they’re enjoying having it with their peers.

It’s the school’s ‘Crunch and Sip’ program that had parents approving it since its introduction, including the school canteen serving healthy choices such as salads, wraps and sushi.

“Our canteen has embraced healthy option lunches that still feel like a treat for the students,” Ms McMurrich said.

“For example, we have sparkling flavoured mineral water that the students love but contains a lot less sugar than other soft drink options.

“Our canteen also sells seasonal fruit salads, healthy salads, wrap and sushi. They see them as a treat, but they’re not full of fat and sugar.”

St Andrews took part in the AIA Healthiest Schools Program running across schools showing students why “eating the rainbow” foods are beneficial to their growing up years.

Ms McMurrich has been tasked to coordinate the program at St Andrews after completing a training

program with teachers from other schools.

AIA Australia initiated the supplementary educational program, among the large corporates in the country, to help schools ensure their students are also gaining vital knowledge on how to maintain their health and wellbeing from youth to adulthood.

The AIA program was designed following an Australian Bureau of Statistics findings in the National Health Survey in 2022 revealing that the proportion of children and teenagers below 17 years old who are not eating sufficient fruits daily doubled in the last 10 years to 5.8 percent from 2.8 percent in 2012 and tripled to 4.5 percent from 1.5 percent on vegetables.

The number of children in ages two to 17 years who are not meeting the recommended fruits and vegetables serving per day in their meals have also decreased to 73 percent, from 63.9 percent in 2018, or more than six in 10 of these children in the two to 17 age group, the ABS findings said.

Ms Mcmurrich said the AIA program showed them how to use innovative teaching resources that would entice students at primary and secondary levels to eat healthy, live an active lifestyle, prioritise mental wellbeing and sustainability in their environment.

“I’ve noticed in the classroom that this program has now transferred to the choices they are making in their daily ‘crunch and sip’ session, as well as their general food choices throughout the day.

“They loved the idea of ‘eating the rainbow’ and this has become a new ‘challenge’ for them to see how many colours they can bring in to school each day.”

Since the program was introduced at the school,

Ms McMurrich said the parents have “always loved it” because it was “engaging their children to learn about key wellbeing pillars including mental, physical and their relationship to the environment.”

Just on its second year, yet the program has already seen St Andrews’ students, including the many parents happily responding well to the initial results, Ms McMurrich said.

On top of the daily classroom resources, many schools in Western Sydney have added the AIA Healthiest Schools Program in the lessons to make their students and communities healthier and happier as concerns grow around children’s health, Ms McMurrich said.

Half admit emotional baggage

NEW research by eharmony highlights the impact of past relationships on future love lives. New Bill for community workers’ rights

THE NSW Government has unveiled a draft bill to extend leave rights for up to 250,000 community sector workers, allowing quicker access to long service leave and portability across multiple employers. Targeting disability care, domestic violence, and homelessness services, the reform aims to address job insecurity and retain essential workers. LOCAL seniors Christine Nield and Peter Overton were joint recipients of the 2024 Blacktown City Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Council celebrated their extraordinary dedication as senior citizens passionately serving their community through volunteer work that makes a difference in other people’s lives.

Blackton City mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM led the awarding ceremonies recently and congratulated them for their achievements.

“This award provides Council with an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the heroes within our senior community in Blacktown City,” Clr Bleasdale said.

“With over 61,000 individuals aged over 65 living in Blacktown City, their remarkable contributions, frequently through voluntary and unpaid work, significantly enrich our community.

“I express my gratitude and congratulations to Christine and Peter for their countless hours of dedication. They are truly deserving recipients of this award.”

Christine, a long-time Blacktown resident, actively supports her community through initiatives such as the Quakers Hill Neighbourhood Centre’s donation appeal.

She also assists the Blacktown Council’s knit bomb project against domestic violence and Boomerang Bags at Riverstone which repurposes fabric to create environmentally friendly items.

Her innovative contributions included making book pillows for early literacy and crafting bags for Kids Early Learning, highlight her dedication to making a difference. Clr Bleasdale said Christine’s dedication to making a difference in people’s lives

For three decades, Peter’s home in Quakers Hill drew crowds from near and far with stunning display of lights and decorations every Christmas season.

Peter makes meticulous and lively handmade Christmas decorations, starting the preparations and set-up every October and November.

By December, in the lead up to Christmas and New Year, his attractive Christmas decorations always amaze thousands of people visiting his street each night.

Peter also organises gatherings such as Christmas barbecue for visitors and visits from Santa riding on a fire truck.

Councils welcome motorway toll review

THE peak body representing councils in Greater Western Sydney, the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), has welcomed the findings of the independent review of motorway toll pricing across Sydney.

Led by Professor Allan Fels (former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and Dr David Cousins, the review was set up by the NSW Government in 2023 to examine the basis for setting motorway tolls in Sydney. The review has concluded that toll

reform is preferable to toll relief schemes, which the report says are “expensive and more likely to be claimed by drivers from middle and high-income households”.

Other recommendations of the review include:

• Using legislation to allow the government to take back control of tolls,

• Giving the independent pricing regulator “significant oversight” in setting the price of tolls,

• Charging motorists less the longer they drive on toll roads, and

• Two-way tolling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Harbour Tunnel and Eastern Distributor.

“WSROC has been advocating for a review of road tolls over many years, urging the government to make toll roads simpler and fairer,” said WSROC President, Councillor Barry Calvert.

“The people of Western Sydney are more greatly impacted by tolling issues than other parts of Sydney, due to their greater dependence on private vehicles resulting from Western Sydney’s lack of

equivalent public transport coverage and capacity.

“Also, on average, Western Sydney residents travel further to access jobs, services, and recreation. As a result, tolls represent the second largest cost for most households in Western Sydney.

“In effect, road tolls and the fuel excise constitute a regressive tax, which greatly and disproportionately burden working families in Western Sydney, already contending with soaring energy costs, rents, and food price inflation.”

THE PONDS DESERVES BETTER MOBILE COVERAGE Advocacy leads to new tower

RELIABE mobile coverage is an essential service for every Australian – regardless of where they live.

When you move into a new build suburb, you expect to have access to decent connectivity. This hasn’t been the experience of residents of The Ponds here in North-West Sydney.

Households have been frustrated with poor mobile coverage since the suburb was built close to a decade ago. Residents are not able to make phone calls from their homes, instead forced to connect from the street or even the next suburb along.

This is worsened in many cases as calls that do connect continuously drop out.

As your local Member, I have made it a priority to drive a practical solution to improve coverage for the good people of The Ponds. Our concerted community advocacy led to the construction of a new mobile tower.

Optus and Telstra have since switched on their signals – and data shows it is being used by more than 3,000 customers in the area.

We have also been working to bring Vodafone/ TPG to the table, so their customers can also get the connectivity they deserve. Despite the new tower, I am still hearing that coverage issues remain.

It is my priority to campaign for my constituents and to follow-up on their concerns – this is a pressing one.My team and I went door-to-door in The Ponds recently to find out more.

The initial feedback shows that while mobile phone reception is improving for some, this experience is not shared. This is not good enough. To residents of The Ponds, I want to hear from you.

I’ve launched an online survey, asking for you to share your coverage experiences over the last few months since the tower was constructed.

Your experiences will help me better understand where coverage is at its worst, and fight for our community. The good people of The Ponds deserve access to reliable mobile coverage.

This is not a nice to have; it is a necessity.

CITS HIP TO BE SQUARE! Blacktown’s future is NOW

OMMUNITY organisations, members of parliament, council and property developers are running community consultations to gauge what the people of Blacktown want their city to look and feel like in future decades.

Mt Druitt masterplan has been delivered and has resulted in upgrades. The NSW Government is injecting over $92M for upgrades to Kevin Betts Stadium, aquatic centre, Dawson Mall and First Nations Community Centre.

Riverstone MP Warren Kirby, having only been elected just 12 months ago, has been conducting community forums attended by good crowds as people express their views, concerns and ideas over the unfolding of the Riverstone Town Plan.

Stephen Bali, MP for Blacktown has conducted forums and feedback sessions, distributing newsletters and contributing articles in the Blacktown News. These focus on the planning of Blacktown CBD.

Bali’s agenda is that future development of Blacktown reflects a cosmopolitan capital city befitting a local government area where its population is set to surpass Tasmania by 2035 – in numbers: to over 610,000 by 2041 with growth continuing.

Walker Corporation acquired a strategic part of Blacktown from council 12 months ago and has conducted several pop-up stalls with an online survey to gauge local initial feedback.

Results will be released in coming months and this builds on feedback generated by local MPs from their forums. The Blacktown News will report these findings.

What has been clear from all surveys, forums and community consultations is that people are sceptical of clichés and hollow catch cries like “jobs, jobs, jobs”.

There’s also scepticism about artist impressions not based on reality, although to be fair to developers craeting accurate creative visions that do reflect reality

take time and evolve as the project scope evolves.

MP Stephen Bali has advocated for a Central Living District concept. He is on record as saying: “Whilst the new Parramatta CBD is great for Parramatta, it is not Blacktown. We need to define what we are and build a central living district to suit our population.”

A key proposal has been the development of a Blacktown Town Square where people can gather in a safe environment. The Square can potentially accommodate 10,000 people for festivals right in the heart of the city making Blacktown the epicentre of major festivals for Western Sydney.

Key concerns for large outdoor festivals are parking, traffic movement, safety, the environment and functional space.

The Blacktown News has presented articles that outline where four key landowners control most of the land from Alpha Park to Colo Lane car park – some 133,000 square metres of land.

Now, imagine a town square surrounded by affordable living accommodation, social enterprises, commercial businesses, walkways, cycleways in a safe and friendly area rather than street scapes and podium parking accommodating thousands of cars.

Since 1975 our city street festivals have become a signature feature of Blacktown

and with Lunar New Year, Holi, Ramadan, Vaisakhi, Diwali, Christmas are the very embodiment of multicultural life in Western Sydney.

Blacktown can become the festive capital of not only Western Sydney but Australia – a global drawcard.

The new Blacktown CBD can become the next international festival destination, driving the visitor and tourism market which benefits the local economy and creates another local visitor magnet for those landing at Western Sydney Airport.

Furthermore, a town square could incorporate the new police station, courthouse, council civic centre, art gallery and an entertainment quarter.

Most agree that the current police station and courthouse are no longer fit for purpose; the council building has been sold and will soon be demolished; the State Government has funded a new $40M art gallery; and the Blacktown Workers Club can drive the revitalisation of an entertainment centre within the town square.

Michelle Rowland MP, Federal Communications Minister, and Member for Greenway has initiated a feasibility study to relocate SBS studios from Artarmon to potentially somewhere in Western Sydney.

We’d suggest that SBS’s ideal relocation could be to Blacktown’s Town Square; given Blacktown City has over 188 cultures from across the world and a strong Indigenous culture.

Of course, the key to all this is collaboration with stakeholders and residents so we can craft plans that take advantage of game-changing opportunities that are before us right now.

Progressive visions are built upon a foundational culture where concerns, values and aspirations can be equally and safely shared. Then the execution can begin.

Closing the Gap

in Western Sydney

In Western Sydney, Darug land, we are fortunate to have one of the largest populations of First Nations peoples in Australia.

Unfortunately, despite improvements to the life expectancy of First Nations peoples, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children born in NSW between 2020-2022 are expected to live 6.8 years (males) and 5.9 years (females) less than non-Indigenous children1 We need to take action and close the gap.

First Nations Services in Western Sydney

The Western Sydney Primary Health Network commissions programs that are co-designed and led by First Nations community groups. The aim is to help people access safe environments that promote self-confidence, build community and create connections to health and wellbeing care.

Community Story

I was referred to the Western Sydney Integrated Team Care (ITC) program not knowing what support I was going to be able to get from them. I had workers come and visit me and explain what they do. Although I have a few health problems, my focus was on housing support as I was in a pretty bad situation living in my mate’s house which was about to be boarded up. The ITC workers always listened when I called in a frustrated and panicked state and provided advocacy and assistance with the Department of Housing when I felt there was no hope. I was able to secure temporary accommodation when the house got boarded up and now have a Department of Housing unit in the Penrith area. Now that I have my own place, I can focus on my health again. I will always remember the support Western Sydney ITC provided.

2.5 Hour Hike to the 40 Foot Falls

On the way back to Sydney be sure to set aside time to complete a 2 and a half hour bushwalk known as the 40 Foot Falls.

This walk begins at the back of Lake Alexandra in Mittagong, the start of this 7km dog-friendly track is signposted. The walk is marked by red poles / tabs with red spray on them marking the way apart from the second bridge you come to (turn left at this intersection). This is a firetrail track. The falls at the end are well worth a visit on a lovely day, be sure to take your own water and snacks and sturdy shoes.

BLACKTOWN CITY SHOW THEIR CLASS Test of character in loss

THE test of a team’s character is how you respond from a loss. In the case of the Blacktown City Senior Men, the 1-0 loss at home to the Wollongong Wolves in round five was a devastating one in the clubs hunt for the 2024 Premiership.

Head of Football, Mark Crittenden, said after that match that the next few weeks will determine our character. His side responded in true Blacktown City style defeating both Rockdale and St George City on the road the next two weeks. The third test in that character was last weekend when Blacktown hosted their rivals Sydney United on Easter Sunday.

Following the loss to Wollongong, Blacktown hit the road to take on the undefeated Rockdale Ilinden in the match of the round. It was a tense encounter as Rockdale were playing to their home crowd, their local MP and NSW Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper as well as first bite at securing the East-West Cup set up by former Blacktown Mayor, Stephen Bali. Rockdale came out firing and put Blacktown in defensive mode with an aggressive attack. That was all changed when Mitch Mallia surprised everyone with a goal of the week that put Blacktown up 1-0 and changed the games momentum.

Blacktown had a goal disallowed but scored again to put the visiting side up 2-0 early in the second half. Rockdale hit back with their own goal but Joey Gibbs responded to give Blacktown a 3-1 lead. The final ten minutes were intense as Rockdale scored again to close the gap 3-2. Blacktown Goalie Tristan Prendergast stood tall and kept Rockdale at bay in the closing minutes. The 3-2 victory lived up to the pre-game match of the round billing with its intensity and competitive spirit.

Week seven had Blacktown back on the road to take on St George City. Dubbed the battle of the cities it was certainly a game for the ages as two teams turned up to play football in a thoroughly entertaining match with both looking to take maximum points and continue their climb up the ladder.

Neither team could score in the first half but after the break, Tyren Burnie skipped down the right wing and crossed for Travis Major, Blacktown’s all-time leading goal scorer, who nodded Blacktown into the lead in the 65th minute. Jak O’Brien scored from a penalty shot to give Blacktown a 2-0 lead and secure the win for a 4-2-1 scoreline leading into round eight.

After seven rounds of the 24 season, seven teams were sitting on four wins. West Sydney Wanderers led all teams with six wins against a sole loss, followed by Marconi with a 5-1-1 scoreline. Sydney United with a 4-1-2 record to date were next up for Blacktown City as they hosted their archrivals on Easter Sunday. Blacktown/Sydney United are always eventful encounters and with both teams on four wins there were key match points at stake.

Blacktown City will stay at Landen Stadium the next two weeks to host Sydney FC and the Central Coast Mariners. Both squads are full of young and energetic talent which will test the experience and composure of Blacktown’s best. A Diamond member of the Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, Blacktown City hosted Chamber members last Thursday in a Business After 5 event. Head of Football, Mark Crittenden addressed the Chamber members early in the evening and guest then witnessed both the Senior Men and Under 20’s in a full training session. The week before, Sponsors and guests were hosted at the Hudson Hotel for the annual Chairman’s Dinner. Blacktown City FC remain committed to proudly represent the city that bears its name!

Blacktown City Women are off and

running in their quest to reach the Top Four in only their third season. New Head Coach, Michael Hawthorne, has his side playing good football and after four rounds sit in the top six having only dropped the one game to Central Coast. Last week Blacktown hosted Inter Lions for a 3-0 win showing they can score goals.

Coach Michael Hawthorne said: “We are getting better each week as the team settles in to competing at this level. It is pleasing that our defense is solid and ability to score goals is showing very positive signs”.

The Women now hit the road for the next three weeks before hosting Hills United on Sunday April 21 at Landen Stadium. This Easter weekend, Blacktown City Women headed South to play the South Coast Flames on Saturday.
