Coast businesses in gala spectacular

T

HIS year’s The Central Coast Local Business Awards was a glittering spectacular that provided a fitting finale to the annual event. This year’s winners exchanged exuberant hugs and cheers filled the room as they made their way to the stage on Wednesday 4th October. Awards founder and Precedent Productions Managing Director Steve Loe said the evening was an exciting culmination to a successful awards program. “The Local Business Awards recognise the vital role business people play in the lives of their communities,” he said. “The presentation evening not only

sees the announcement of the category winners but is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all the finalists. “We had a sell-out crowd that included our finalists, their families and staff, as well as our sponsors and local dignitaries, who helped to present awards to the winners.” Central Coast Business Access captured all the excitement as the finalists in each category were announced, complete with images on the big screen, followed by huge cheers as the winners’ names were read out and they took to the stage to claim their trophies. “The winners’ speeches are always

heartfelt and emotional,” Mr Loe said. “This year was no exception. “It’s very emotional for everyone there to see their tears and smiles as well as hear the beautiful acceptance speeches.” As official media partner for the Central Coast Local Business Awards, Central Coast Sun will publish a winners’ feature, that recognises all category winners from the presentation evening. “Of course, the awards are only possibly with the support of Presenting Partner, Commonwealth Bank and Support Partners, Village Central Wyong, West Gosford Village, BxNetworking, Cornerstone and White Key Marketing.”

Mr Loe said. “Their involvement proves their commitment to their community and the businesses that thrive there.” Mr Loe also thanked Mingara Recreation Club for the high quality food and service it provided. “Thanks to them it was a five-star occasion,” he said. “I would also like to acknowledge the incredible entertainment and our fabulous MC Paul Hancock who kept the evening flowing smoothly.” Businesses can register for the 2024 Local Business Awards at www.thebusinessawards.com.au

Norah Head Sporties wins

A

N impressive transformation has turned the leaf around for Norah Head Sports & Bowling Club which two years ago was on the brink of closure. The current management and board are being credited by their local community for saving their “hidden little gem” and was nominated to receive the 2023 Central Coast Local Business Award for Outstanding Event Services. Locally known as Sporties, its management received the award at the formal ceremonies at Mingara Recreational Club at Tumbi Umbi last August. Chief executive Krystle Hatcher took over the Sporties’ operations two years ago and brought in a refurbished bar, gaming, Saltbush bistro and exciting weekly sporting and entertainment for the local community and visitors to the town. With the improvements, the venue’s turnover was impressive, and from being a small team of 10 staff, they are now 30 to include a human resources manager, head chef, events supervisors and night supervisors. “We continue to grow, excel, and promote Norah Head Sporties which is an incredible example of growth with our little hidden gem,” a Sporties spokesperson said.

The management focused on the renovations, improving functions, holding crowd-pleasing events to bring in more customers, and in a span of two years, Sporties is now enjoying 12 months of booked out functions, the spokesperson said. Sporties’ social circle has grown in popularity with weekly social bowls and surfing events, recreational activities and most locals are spending their pastimes at the venue for indoor and outdoor activities. A new management will be chosen and applications now open from local residents who want to serve as the

Sporties’ president, vice president and director. Applications close on October 29 at 6pm and must be submitted in person at the Sporties’ administration office located at 32 Victoria Street, Norah Head. Those selected for the roles would be announced at the annual general meeting to be held at the Sporties on Sunday, November 12, at 9am. For more details, phone the CEO Ms Hatcher on (02) 4396 6477 or email manager@norahheadsports.com.au For upcoming events, visit https://norahheadsports.com/

Meet Terrigal’s award-winning entrepreneur, Marie George

B

EDHIND the success of Terrigal’s popular shop, George’s Fruit Barn, is an energetic lady, Marie George. Her late husband Anthony George opened a fresh fruit and vegetable roadside stall on the Scenic Highway nearly 50 years ago. While raising their five children, the couple tirelessly worked together transforming that stall into an icon in the business community on the Central Coast. Anthony’s passing away did not deter Marie from continuing and has even expanded the family’s enterprise. When people hear ‘If you can’t find it anywhere around Terrigal, go to George’s Fruit Barn’, it makes Marie feel so proud. “Basically, everything you need you can find at George’s Fruit Barn,” Marie said. A talented entrepreneur, Marie established the Green View Gallery and Gift Shop, situated close to the barn, as well as a visitors’ accommodation. Marie settled on the coast from the Philippines where her family were also selling fruits and vegetables. Her business acumen helped Anthony to grow his business further to become known as the shop to go-to for fruits, vegetables, groceries and a range of Asian and multicultural foods. The barn now also sells foods that are certified organic, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, paleo and keto choices.

Marie’s new gallery was once known as the old “Lizottes” which she renovated to showcase the award-winning creations of the local arts community. Hard work pays off The gallery was voted winner of the 2021 New Business Category in the Central Coast Local Business Awards. “I appreciate works of art, I have always dreamed of having a gallery for fine artworks,” Marie said. An accommodation for AirBnB customers is attached to the gallery building with a charming two-bedroom apartment that boasts of stunning coastal and mountain views around Terrigal. The business won the New Business

category in the 2021 Central Coast Local Business Awards. The Green View Café was nominated as finalist for the New Business Category in the 2023 Central Coast Local Business Awards. The café hosts corporate and private functions such as weddings and birthdays. Marie’s achievement has been recognised, nominated for the 2022 Parliamentary Medal for Terrigal Woman of the Year for outstanding community service to the Central Coast community. Her previous awards received included the Central Coast Outstanding Business of the Year in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

“Consistent hard work and attention to customers’ needs has been the hallmark of George’s Fruit Barn’s success throughout the years,” Marie said. “That is how we coined our motto, ‘If you cannot find it anywhere, go to George’s!’ because our team has been tireless in helping customers find unusual fresh produce for recipes. “We offer a broad range of high quality local and imported grocery items to suit a variety of consumer’s needs they can’t easily find on the Coast.” George’s Fruit Barn is located at 251 Scenic Hwy Terrigal.
