PLACE TO BE DAY OR NIGHT

Parramatta CBD business open 24/7

BUSINESSES in Sydney’s second CBD will be given fuss free green light to stay open 24/7 if they choose to do so from Monday, July 8.

Parramatta City Council has approved the Late Night Trading Development Controls with new regulations stipulating how businesses can operate all day, all night each week.

A devoted “Special Entertainment Precinct” at Parramatta Square and “East Street Precinct” at Church Street are also being considered at this stage.

The regulation also requires businesses applying to stay open 24/7 to “include appropriate noise amelioration measures to ensure future residents or workers will not be affected by late night trading noise.”

The new Council regulation would make it easier for business owners and investors to join the drive for the city’s transformation into a thriving nighttime economy, Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said.

“We are well on the way to becoming a global city that is open 24/7,” Cr Esber said.

“We were the first in Western Sydney to earn international Purple Flag

accreditation for our vibrant, diverse and safe nightlife.

"We want Parramatta to be a place where, at any time of day and night, you can get a great meal, go dancing, enjoy arts and culture, grab a coffee and shop.”

An excited business community has welcomed the Council’s latest regulation extending their operating hours and reducing red tape in completing

approval process for those opting to open 24 hours a day.

The controls are expected to deliver better hours and trial periods for businesses.

“We thank the Lord Mayor, councillors and Council staff for their collaboration with licenced premises, as well as operators outside of the liquor industry, to ensure we achieve our goal of a vibrant and safe Parramatta nightlife,”

Parramatta Liquor Accord President Dan O’Hara said.

“The approved DCP will encourage premises to conduct more live music and entertainment at their venues, provide certainty to existing venues to invest and improve their venues, whilst providing the framework to attract new world-class operators to the Parramatta CBD precinct.”

Mayor Esber said the extension of business hours is also beneficial for the broader local economy having modern public transport options now available to and from the city centre.

“It’s all part of our vision to see Parramatta on the same global stage as New York, Paris and London.”

Parramatta Light Rail is also offering visitors to the CBD with $150 vouchers each week until August 1 when they dine at any of the caf? and restaurants featured in the 2024 Restaurant Guide.

To win in the draw, visitors simply send a photo their meal receipt to restaurantguide@ transport.nsw.gov.au.

Parramatta’s Burramatta NAIDOC festival

INDIGENOUS Australian hip-hop artist, Jacob Paulson (professionally known as JK-47) is set to headline a live First Nations concert at Parramatta Park for the annual Burramatta NAIDOC festival next month.

This year’s event features an outdoor movie screening, traditional arts and craft workshops, cultural activities, live entertainment, food trucks and market stalls in the heart of Parramatta as part of the City’s Warami program.

The free event coincides with NAIDOC Week to celebrate Dharug and other First Nations people’s rich culture and enduring strength and is held on 13 July from 10am-4pm.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said NAIDOC Week is about celebrating our First Nations culture and acknowledging our rich heritage and history.

“Burramatta NAIDOC is a jampacked day of family-friendly activities, food and traditional workshops that celebrate First Nations stories, art and performances,” Cr Esber said.

“It’s a chance for our community to celebrate the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture, make stronger connections with each other and to Country.

“This will mark the end of our Warami program for 2024, so I encourage everyone to join us for a day outdoors celebrating our rich heritage.”

Former Unearthed Artist of the Year, JK-47 will hit the stage to perform

Heritage listing sought for precinct

THREE of Australia’s oldest and most significant heritage sites may finally get national heritage listing after a new push.

Located on the edge of Parramatta’s CBD, a small precinct houses three of Australia’s most significant heritage sites: Hambledon Cottage (1825), Elizabeth Farm (1793) and Experiment Farm (1794). Despite not formally recognised on the National Heritage List, the sites are the birthplace of Australia with the first grapevines and olive trees on the continent grown on the properties.

Built in 1793, Elizabeth Farm is also known as the birthplace of Australia’s Merino wool industry and the oldest standing European building in Australia, with Experiment Farm taking second place.

The latest push to protect these sites come after a proposal was put forward

in 2022 for 483 high-rise apartments to be built in the precinct.

Up to 8 storeys tall, this development would threaten the neighbouring Hambledon Cottage and overshadow nearby Experiment Farm and Elizabeth Farm.

Since then, local residents, the National Trust and the Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral have been united in the fight to stop the Gregory Place development.

Andrew Charlton MP, Federal Member for Parramatta, is leading the push for national heritage protections of the heritage precinct, which covers Elizabeth Farm, Hambledon Cottage and Experiment Farm.

“Sitting on the edge of Australia’s fastest growing CBD are three of our oldest and most important heritage assets,” Dr Charlton said.

some of his top hits. The talented artist has made a significant impact on the Australian hip-hop scene, writing and performing about Indigenous history, identity and culture.

The Minjungbal Gudjinburra artist said he’s excited to bring his new music to the stage for Warami this year.

“It’s such an honour to perform at Burramatta this NAIDOC, there’s always a huge crowd in Parramatta,” JK said.

“I can’t wait to see everyone together and perform this new album for you all!”

Joining JK-47 on the stage are R&B and Hip Hop artists Blanche, Jada Weazel and Kootsie Don with singer and songwriter Akala Newman emceeing the concert.

Free workshops offer business boost

LOCAL small businesses looking to sharpen their budgeting, marketing and grant writing skills will have access to more than 13 free workshops over the next six months through the City of Parramatta’s Small Business Program.

Workshops will provide access to industry experts and cover areas like building financial literacy, empowering women in business, networking, support for writing grants and learning about digital tools to accelerate your business.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said small businesses are the beating heart of the City’s economy.

“This is a great opportunity to take your business to new heights by learning new skills,” Cr Esber said.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our community, and we want to make sure business owners

have the right tools and resources to thrive.

“From growing an online audience to networking and a cybersecurity webinar, these workshops are designed to support small businesses with navigating the ebbs and flows of running their own business.

Australian School of Employment will run a face-to-face Ideation 101 course as part of the Small Business Program for those looking to start their own career and build their own community.

Australian School of Employment CEO, Taj Pabari said they are excited to help support local businesses.

“We believe in the power of community -our face-to-face course is designed to support small business owners and entrepreneurs,” Mr Pabari said.

Western Sydney Business Centre Business Connect Advisor and Operations Manager Nathan Todd said they were excited to partner with Council to

“The history of Parramatta is the history of Australia. These sites must be protected.”

The application, which is being compiled with the National Trust, will be submitted later in July.

Investment in our hospitals

THE NSW Government will invest $480.7M to ease pressure on NSW hospitals by reducing emergency department visits and improving patient flow. The funding will expand Healthdirect services, creating virtual consultation options and urgent care clinics to divert non-critical cases from EDs. Additionally, expanding Emergency Department Short Stay Units and Hospital in the Home programs will help manage patient flow, reducing wait times and enhancing care quality. This aims to address record ambulance responses and severe patient cases.

Coles raises $9.3M for needy

COLES, with the support of customers, pork farmers, and suppliers, raised a record $9.3M for FightMND’s Big Freeze 10, bringing their total to nearly

$40M over seven years. Funds will support MND research, treatments, and care initiatives. Top fundraising stores were mostly in regional areas, with Coles Kangaroo Flat raising over $58,000. Contributions came from Big Freeze Beanie and Sock sales, and select supermarket items.

We are the most generous state

NEW South Wales is Australia's most generous state, with 21,900 residents donating an average of $648 each to the Australian Red Cross from May 2022 to December 2023. Despite a 17% drop in donations compared to the previous period, national donations reached 69,000. Funds support disaster relief, first aid training, and aid for vulnerable communities. Residents can donate or volunteer at redcross.org.au.

There’s a gap in skills use

RESEARCH by SSI reveals that over 620,000 migrant workers in Australia are unable to fully use their skills, despite having higher qualifications than Australian-born workers. Nearly 44% of migrants and refugees are in roles below their skill level. Deloitte Access Economics found that unlocking this potential could add $70 billion to the economy over 10 years, creating 51,000 full-time jobs, raising wages, and boosting productivity in key industries.

Investment in housing growth

THE NSW Government is investing $253.7M to accelerate development application assessments and support housing growth around existing infrastructure. The funding will

enhance planning staff, modernize the planning system with technology and AI, and implement key reforms. These efforts aim to reduce approval times, support renewable energy goals, and address the housing crisis, ensuring better communities for New South Wales.

Measures to address housing growth

THE NSW Government will invest $253.7M to hire planners and upgrade technology, speeding up development application assessments and supporting housing growth around existing infrastructure. This aims to address the housing crisis, support job creation, and improve planning outcomes. The funding will modernize the planning system, support renewable energy goals, and ensure faster approvals, helping build better communities for New South Wales.

Women into local government

TO encourage more women to run for local council in the September elections, the NSW Government is funding $160,000 for workshops by the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) and Women for Election. These workshops will cover leadership skills, campaign strategies, and councillor responsibilities, targeting underrepresented women, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. This initiative aims to increase diversity in local government representation.

BUSINESS’ NIGHT OF

NIGHTS

Who’s in for the big prize?

HOLLYWOOD has the Oscars and the music industry has the Grammys – but for Parramatta businesses, the annual night of nights is Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

That’s the date of the 2024 Parramatta Local Business Awards.

Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe said: “There’s no doubt that local business owners and their staff work hard to provide the best possible service to their customers.

“That’s why the annual Parramatta Local Business Awards presentation night is always such a popular event.

“It’s a glittering event that gives finalists a chance to dress up and take a break so they can enjoy an evening out with entertainment, good food, relaxed chat and celebration with their colleagues and people from other businesses from around the district.”

Mr Loe said being a finalist at the Parramatta Local Business Awards presentation night was an enormous achievement.

Today is the day when nominees for the 2024 Parramatta Local Business Awards discover if they have made it as a finalist.

Mr Loe said the high quality of all nominees had made the job of judges incredibly difficult.

“The Parramatta Times which has supported the awards as media partner for many years, will announce the finalists in each category with a special feature in today’s publication,” he said.

“This is a chance for customers and clients to see if the businesses they nominated have become finalists.”

“It’s also a chance for business people and their teams to reflect on their successes with a fun night out,” he said. “All finalists in each category are announced, with their picture shown on the big screen which is a great reflection of all their efforts and everyone is extremely proud to be there.

C“It’s heart-warming to hear the deafening cheers from the crowd as everyone celebrates the achievement of all the businesses in the room.”

The Parramatta Local Business Awards are only possible with the support of major sponsors, NOVA Employment and support sponsors, The Epping Club, White Key Marketing, Bx Networking,.

“It’s with great pleasure that I congratulate all the finalists on their achievements, on behalf of the Par-

ramatta Local Business Awards,” Mr Loe said.

“I would also like to thank the Parramatta community for the huge support that they continue to show for their local businesses through the Awards every year.

Without them, these outstanding businesses wouldn’t receive the recognition they deserve.”

Driving Do’s and Don’ts for your snow trip

Locals live here - Driving through Berridale, Jindabyne and communities in this locality remember that children go to school and daycare here, teenagers cycle to school and work here so please don’t be in a rush.

Wheel Chains - you will need to carry them if your car is not a 4WD, they are mandatory and you will see why on a snowy or icy day. You can pick them up from service stations anywhere between Cooma and the snow at petrol stations and snow hire places.

Snow Driving -This is not like normal driving, there is black ice on the road, which is a thin layer of ice which is imperceivable to the eye and

the road becomes very icy and easy to slide off the side of the road, There are MANY cars off the side of the road during blizzards and heavy snow. If you don’t feel confident, park your car at the Station Resort, Jindabyne and catch the bus. See coomacoaches.com.au/ snowy-mountains-bus-service for winter schedule.

Parking - Up at the resorts the parking is extremely limited. It is first come first served and there may be a bit of a walk from the car to the ski lifts. Wear shoes with grip and bring a backpack to store these shoes in and leave them somewhere safe while you’re skiing. Stashing an inexpensive backpack in a corner of the building under a chair is fine.

Best snow play options at the snow

Head to Corin Forest and Mt Selywn for a snow experience closest to Sydney to see snow for the first time and throw a snowball and make a snowman. If you’re keen to visit the bigger resorts of NSW, there is no snow play allowed at Thredbo, Perisher and Thredbo charge a national parks entry fee. Both resorts really discourage snow play (they won’t tell you but I will) due to accidents in the past as skiers and toboggans and small children collided, so they’re really not set up for snow play. If you must go to one of these bigger resorts, I’d advise leaving the car at the Station Resort in Jindabyne and heading up on the public bus. They come regularly throughout winter. The car park gets crowded, and your car can tend to be parked far away

whereas the bus drops you at the centre. Walk north to the flat area away from the lifts to escape getting hit by an out-of-control skier.

How to do The Islands of Tahiti on a budget

When you think of The Islands of Tahiti, images of romantic overwater bungalows, luxury catamarans and private jets likely come to mind. Luckily, you don’t need a celebrity’s budget to enjoy this stunning destination and its 118 islands because there are plenty of budget-friendly hotels around. One of the best ways to experience the islands on a budget is to stay in a locally owned and run guesthouse, known as pensions.

These budget accommo-

Idations allow for an authentic experience and the opportunity to connect with the locals. Every island in the destination has pensions where you get to stay with a local family, go on day trips in the area with their local guides, sample traditional home cooked Tahitian dishes and learn about their culture.

Another way to save money on accommodation and food is to book a vacation rental from companies such as Tahiti Homes, where you can enjoy

all the amenities of a home but with infinitely better views. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful spot for a romantic getaway, such as the Suite Vai Tea in Tahiti or a spacious villa for a family vacation, such as the Villa Moana on Moorea, these vacation rentals provide the perfect setting to create memorable experiences while enjoying the landscapes of the islands.

ROAD TO ACHIEVING PHYSICAL STRENGTH

Check out our easy step guide

WHETHER you're a beginner or looking to refine your approach, the following guidelines can help you build and maintain physical strength effectively.

1. Set Clear Goals

Before embarking on a strength training regimen, it's crucial to define your goals. Do you want to build muscle mass, increase endurance, or enhance overall strength? Clear goals will help you design a tailored workout plan and track your progress.

2. Follow a Structured Training Program

A well-structured training program is essential for consistent strength gains. Here are some key components:

• Compound Exercises: Focus on compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and pull-ups. These exercises engage multiple muscle groups, promoting balanced strength development and functional fitness.

• Progressive Overload: Gradually increase the weight, frequency, or number of repetitions in your exercises. This principle of progressive overload ensures continuous muscle adaptation and growth.

• Rest and Recovery: Incorporate rest days into your routine. Muscles grow and repair during rest, so overtraining can be counterproductive. Aim for at least one or two rest days per week, depending on the intensity of your workouts.

3. Prioritise Nutrition

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in strength training. Here are some dietary considerations:

• Protein Intake: Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth. Include high-quality protein sources such as lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products,

and plant-based proteins like beans and lentils. Aim for 1.2 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, depending on your training intensity.

• Balanced Diet: Ensure your diet includes a balance of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates provide energy for workouts, while healthy fats support overall health and hormone production.

• Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial for muscle function and recovery. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after workouts.

4. Focus on Form and Technique

Proper form and technique are essential for maximizing strength gains and preventing injuries. Consider the following tips:

• Learn from Professionals: If you're new to strength training, consider working with a certified personal trainer to learn the correct techniques.

• Mind-Muscle Connection: Concentrate on the

muscle group you're working on to ensure proper engagement and effectiveness of the exercise.

• Warm-Up and Cool Down: Always warm up before your workouts to prepare your muscles and joints. Cooling down with stretching helps reduce muscle soreness and improve flexibility.

5. Mental Discipline and Consistency

Building strength requires mental discipline and consistency. Here are some strategies to stay motivated:

• Set Milestones: Break your overall goal into smaller, achievable milestones. Celebrate your progress along the way to stay motivated.

• Track Your Progress: Keep a workout journal to log your exercises, weights, and repetitions. Tracking progress helps you stay accountable and see improvements over time.

• Stay Patient: Strength building is a gradual process. Avoid the temptation to rush or compare yourself to others. Focus on your journey and celebrate your unique progress.

6. Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to your body’s signals. If you experience pain (as opposed to normal post-workout soreness), take it seriously. Pushing through pain can lead to injuries that set back your progress.

Achieving physical strength is a holistic process that involves consistent training, proper nutrition, adequate rest, and mental discipline. By setting clear goals, following a structured program, prioritizing nutrition, focusing on technique, maintaining mental discipline, and listening to your body, you can effectively build and sustain physical strength. Remember, the journey to strength is personal and continuous; stay dedicated, and you will see results.
