WEXPO THE STUDENT EDITION

November 4, 2024

Now in its third year, WEXPO has evolved as a go-to event. WEXPO showcase events have been held at Blacktown Workers Club and Hills and attracted high profile keynote speakers including NSW Minister Stephen Kamper and leading economist Besa Deda, among others.

In 2024 and 2025 WEXPO takes a new slant on connection. We are going on the road with WEXPO Student Edition. This is where we link up with schools in Blacktown LBA for a special presentation to an audience of students, visitors and parents. The event will be held in a school venue.

Our showcase speaker is a prominent performer / leader in sports, academia, community or business with a background or connection to Blacktown. He /she presents for 30 – 50 minutes or so with motivational messages around themes of self-improvement, dealing with adversity and success mindset – based on their own unique journeys.

Our first WEXPO – The Student Edition engages Blacktown’s own popular Olympic diver and local business owner Melissa Wu at Cathwest Innovation College.

This lady is a star and a total inspirational icon. Melissa will call on her vast experience to talk about her campaign over multiple Olympics, keys to developing a winning mindset, overcoming adversity and building a successful business. She is an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder and also competed on SAS Australia.

Josh and Melissa will take the students through some weightlifting fundamentals. Although weightlifting is a stand-alone sport, the weightlifting movements of snatch and clean and jerk are commonly used by athletes across all sports to improve strength, power, speed and coordination, which can help improve performance in all sports. They will cover a few basic movement patterns that all children should be exposed to including body weight squats and overhead squats and then use wooden dowels (sticks) to introduce the students to basic weightlifting movements and technique. It will still be interesting even for those not taking part because they will learn about weightlifting.
