In an ordinary council meeting on February 6, a majority, or 10 of the 13 shire councillors rejected the Local Government NSW mo-

tion by Sydney City Council carried out in late last year’s conference urging its 128 member councils to help promote LGBTQI+ events in their communities. After the council meeting on February 6, Clr Mila Kasby, of the NSW Greens Party who voted against the motion by Liberal Party Clr Jerome Cox, said LGBTQIA+ residents were “visibly upset, some were crying." RIVERSTONE is set to get a new lease of life with a plan to revamp the town centre.

Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby said input from the community began last month and was now well under way.

The Town Centre Masterplan is a collaborative process with residents, community groups, the Member for Riverstone, the Department of Planning and Environment, the NSW Reconstruction Authority and Blacktown City Council.

“I am thrilled that Minister Scully has welcomed my proposal, as the local MP, to commence a local community engagement process so we can get cracking on developing ideas for a new Riverstone Town Centre Masterplan,” Mr Kirby said.

“This marks a pivotal moment for our community, and I am committed to working closely with the Minister, our residents and other stakeholders to develop a masterplan that revitalises our town centre.

“The aim is to create a thriving hub where people can live, work and enjoy all that Riverstone has to offer.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, welcomed Mr Kir-

by’s windows.

He said community engagement will be a cornerstone of the new masterplan’s development.

“Warren Kirby, your local MP, is making sure that the voices and perspectives of Riverstone’s residents are heard and will be incorporated into this planning process,” Mr Scully said.

Mr Kirby said opportunities for the community to provide feedback began last month and would continue throughout 2024.

They will include workshops, surveys and public meetings.

The Riverstone Town Centre Masterplan will consider a range of critical factors including:

• Anticipated growth in Riverstone’s population;

• The evolving needs of the local community;

• Opportunities for economic development and job creation;

• Preserving and enhancing the town’s rich heritage; and

• Ensuring the new Masterplan complies with current planning regulations.

“I wholeheartedly encourage all Riverstone residents and businesses to actively participate in the community engagement process that I am starting and contribute their valuable insights into shaping the future of our town

centre,” Mr Kirby said.

Cost of living hits home Energy workers strike in Parra

WORKERS at two of the country’s largest energy providers, Endeavour Energy and Transgrid, walked out for 24 hours recently.

They staged the strike at Parramatta Square talking on microphone expressing frustration over wages that have not kept pace with skyrocketing living costs since the pandemic.

They are seeking eight percent more annually over the next three years or 24 percent overall which Endeavour Energy has rejected.

An Endeavour Energy substation staffer on strike, Mick McGuire told WSE they intend to down the tools for longer until their big corporate employers and politicians hear them out.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but I know many younger sparkies out here with families and kids who are having a tough time keeping up with high inflation, so we just want fair wage increases for what we’re doing,” he said.

“We may not all be on the same boat with [impacts on our] pockets because my kids are now in their twenties, but no matter what stage in life we’re in, we should be getting a fair share when you see these executives getting big pay rises.

“We are essential workers in this industry, we go out in rain, hail or sunshine to keep the supply on for consumers.”

The Endeavour Energy workers said their wages have risen by 10.5 percent since 2019, while Transgrid workers had eight percent over the same period, however their wages were thinning with skyrocketing prices of basic needs and housing.

The workers claimed inflationary rate is realistically at 18 percent and not seven percent according to Reserve Bank calculations because of evidence

of excessive costs on housing, groceries and other basic financial obligations they spend on since the pandemic in 2019.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics December 2023 consumer price index showed inflation up by 3.4 percent with insurances at its highest to date at 8.2 percent, alcohol and tobacco at 6.8 percent, housing at 5.2 percent and food and non-alcoholic drinks at 4 percent.

Roy Morgan also released its findings last December revealing 1.5 million mortgage holders or 30 percent of borrowers are under financial strain since

2022 when the RBA began interest rate increases now at 4.1 percent since last October.

An Endeavour Energy spokesperson confirmed they offered an upfront $1,000 extra pay, then 5.25 percent from July 1 this year, 3.25 percent from July 1 in 2025, and 2.75 percent from July 1 in 2026.

“Our discussions on the enterprise agreement continue and we are committed to working constructively with our employees throughout this process,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the ETU demand was not sustainable because “they add significant costs to the business without productivity or efficiency improvements”.

On top of the eight percent annual increases, the spokesperson said, there were 65 other working condition demands but she did not elaborate on the claims.

Endeavour Energy is partly owned by the NSW government, and it operates the electrical network from Ulladulla in the NSW Shoalhaven region, up to Waterfall and Western Sydney.

TransGrid was privatised in 2015 and whose owners are the Utilities Trust of Australia, Spark Infrastructure, and Tawreed Investments.

Transgrid has been contacted for comment.

New $390M Penrith Stadium Venue mecca opens in 2026

THE new look $309M makeover of Penrith Stadium was shown for the first time with football star Nathan Cleary joining the announcement on by state and sporting officials.

Penrith Stadium will be undergoing a significant transformation after the end of the 2024 NRL season, as construction begins to make it into a premier sporting and entertainment venue.

The modern sporting and entertainment precinct within the Penrith CBD has been promised for the city by the Minns Labor government in last year’s state election.

The significant stadium upgrade set for completion in 2026 has been designed to improve the gameday experience for fans and players.

It is also set to attract visitors from far and wide, creating a superior venue for sports events, live music and entertainment.

“I am delighted to see the upgraded Penrith Stadium brought to life in these exciting new designs,” deputy premier and minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said.

“This is a very welcome upgrade to a stadium that has been well-loved by the passionate Western Sydney community.

“I cannot wait to see the seats filled as fans come roaring in to enjoy Pan-

thers’ games in the upgraded stadium.”

The redevelopment included a new western grandstand and significant changes to the eastern grandstand meant to increase the ground capacity for 25,000 more.

Grandstands have been reconfigured to maximise seating with premium views between the try lines to be steeper to bring fans closer to the action.

“When complete, Penrith Stadium will be a first-class sporting and entertainment venue for everyone to enjoy,” sports minister Steve Kamper said.

Penrith MP Karen McKeown said they must “thank the 3,000 fans and families who provided their input to the design process.”

“I, along with every fan of sport, am so excited to see that the iconic hills at either end of the ground have been saved,” she said.

There will be new scoreboards, sound systems and upgraded lighting as shown in the artist’s impression when the stadium is hosting live entertainment at night.

New player facilities including four new changerooms will help grow female representation in rugby league and other sporting codes.

According to the design, the hills at the northern and southern end of the playing field will be retained, reflecting feedback from over 3,000 fans, families and community members whose input was acknowledged by Ms McKeown,

a former Penrith mayor and currently serving as a councillor.

The training field to the west of the stadium will be remodelled to create a stadium precinct with quality open space for outdoor community, sporting and entertainment events.

The project is expected to boost for Western Sydney’s local economy with jobs during the construction phase and one operational.

Once completed, Venues NSW will operate the stadium, in addition to its management of Accor Stadium, the SCG, Allianz Stadium, McDonald Jones Stadium, WIN Stadium and CommBank Stadium.

Govt takes over Hawkesbury Hospital

THE NSW Government will assume responsibility for the provision of healthcare at Hawkesbury Hospital after St John of God Health Care advised it would not renew its contract to provide services at the facility.

As a result, services provided by SJHC will transition to Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD. It is expected the transition of Hawkesbury Hospital to the NSW Government will be completed by 30 June 2024.

The NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park says patients at the Hawkesbury District Health Service – known as the Hawkesbury Hospital – can rest assured they will continue to receive high quality, safe, and compassionate care.

The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District will ensure the skill, knowledge and expertise of the hospital’s staff will be absorbed under the new arrangements with the NSW Government.

NSW Health will work with staff and their relevant unions to transition their employment from St John of God to the public health system.

The hospital will remain open throughout the entirety of the transition period.

This will include its 24-hour emergency department, operating theatres, community health services and outpatients’ clinics.

Public patient appointments and clinic hours will not be impacted.

Asbestos testing at GWS sites

ASBESTOS testing has commenced in four schools, a hospital, shopping centre and a park across Western Sydney and they have been closed for further testing by a taskforce.

Inspections are taking place at Westmead Christian Grammar in Westmead, St Luke’s Catholic College in Marsden Park, Penrith Christian School in Orchard Hills, Mt Annan Christian College in Mt Annan, St John of God Hospital in North Richmond, Woolworths in Kellyville and a Transport for NSW park area at Wiley Park.

The EPA said it is providing this advice to keep everyone concerned abreast of developments particularly parents and students at those schools and the public connected to those sites so they can keep their communities safe.

St Luke’s Catholic College in Marsden Park have been closed this Friday while those schools that remained open are advised to keep students and staff away from garden beds and around the site.

This development comes as the EPA have confirmed there are 24 sites across Sydney that have returned positive results for bonded asbestos since the discovery at Rozelle Parklands and other Sydney sites.

Asbestos testing has also started this Friday at Allambie Heights Public School in Allambie Heights, International Grammar School in Ultimo and North Sydney Public School in North Sydney.

The NSW Health has advised the asbestos initially found were “low risk to public health, and one site for friable asbestos.”

EPA testing officers are on the ground, and they are under supervision of the NSW Government Asbestos Taskforce which includes experts from NSW Health and NSW Department of Education.

These schools and sites in Western Sydney have been identified as having mulch from the same manufacturer that has supplied mulch to the 25 other sites that tested positive for bonded asbestos, the EPA said.

All landowners around the identified sites have been advised to put in place measures to prevent anyone accessing their site and to begin removal of the contaminated mulch.

Once testing results are finalised, the EPA will advise what further actions can be taken, but parents of students in identified schools are advised to contact their school directly for updates on the situation.

Bradfield masterplan on exhibition

PLANNING for one of the biggest economic development projects undertaken in Australia, the Bradfield City Centre, has taken a major step forward with the draft Master Plan now available for community feedback.

The Bradfield City Centre Master Plan sets out a framework for future development within the new 114-hectare city, five times the size of Barangaroo, at the heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

The Master Plan will position Bradfield City Centre as a centre for innovation, education, and skills development in the heart of Western Sydney.

It is expected to deliver 20,000 direct jobs and is positioned to emerge as Australia’s premier hub for advanced and emerging industries. It is expected

to also create up to 10,000 new homes for the people of Western Sydney.

The proposal contains all key areas for a new city, including homes, streets and roads, city blocks, parks and open space, commercial and retail precincts, and, crucially the strategies to deliver the required infrastructure.

The development is backed by a more than $1B investment from the NSW Government and is anticipated to unlock billions more in private investment.

If approved, the Master Plan will outline a staged approach to more than two million square metres gross floor area of development across the city centre, located on the doorstep of the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

While the Aerotropolis and new Metro line are substantially underway, the draft Master Plan for Bradfield City Centre marks a significant milestone after a lack of coordination and years of inaction under the previous Liberal National Government.

Despite the previous government’s lack of planning, development has now begun in Bradfield with construction underway including the first stage of a new Advanced Manufacturing and Research Facility (AMRF), with electronics giant Hitachi, an advanced industry hub, due to open this year.

This exhibition represents the government “getting its skates on” to provide the vision to establish and grow Bradfield into a world-class city in line with the planned opening of

WSI metro reaches new heights

WORK is powering ahead on the Western Sydney Airport Metro line with nearly one kilometre of a new bridge (viaduct) located between Orchard Hills and Luddenham completed.

The bridge, consisting of 36 piers, one every 28 to 40 metres, and 308 concrete segments will be 3.5-kilometre long as part of the new Western Sydney Airport metro line.

The foundation for the new metro station at Luddenham is also complete, ready for work on the station build to commence next month.

Situated up to 13.5 metres above ground, Luddenham Station will be the only station on the new line located on a viaduct.

Work on the remaining part of the metro line is also in full swing, with four tunnel boring machines excavating the 9.8-kilometre tunnels and earthworks underway to complete sections of the railway at ground level.

The Metro line’s six new stations will also become a crucial connection for workers and travellers making their way to Western Sydney’s new international airport and

surrounding areas.

The NSW Government has already approved a number of major projects in the region including data centres at Huntingwood and Kemps Creek, each worth over $1B. Significant investment is also being driven into the area surrounding Luddenham Metro Station with Sydney Water nearing construction completion of an Integrated Water Recycling Hub.

The government continues to work to cut red tape imposed by the former government on development, further driving the creation of jobs in this growing region of Sydney.

Providing training for young locals

PEMULWAY resident Elena Sevdimbas attended a site visit at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) which created the motivation for her to apply for an Internship at WSI.

The 20-year-old has completed a Diploma of Criminal and Community Justice at Western Sydney University and is currently studying a Bachelor of Criminology, also at WSU.

Ms Sevdimbas said that as someone who was born and raised in Western Sydney and comes from a multiicultural background, she felt a connection to WSI and wanted to have an impact, which was the motivator for her to apply for the Internship.

“I am a part of the Community Engagement and Social Impact team at WSI, so my role mainly consists of supporting and engaging with various relevant communities in the area”, said Ms Sevdimbas.

Currently there are more than 4,000 people working on site at WSI. Half of the project’s workforce live in Western Sydney and around a third are learning new skills on-the-job.

Once the airport becomes operational in late 2026 there will be significant new job

opportunities directly with the airport and with local businesses supporting the new airport.

Katy Hannouch, General Manager – Community Engagement and Social Impact at WSI said that the Internship Program equips students with practical skills, combined with formal education, to build capability and employment pathways for the community in Western Sydney.

“The Intern Program is aimed at university students in their second or final year of study and the Interns work in a six-month paid program, part time”, said Ms Hannouch.

“WSI supports the student’s academic studies, and the interns work on specialist projects, along with a staff mentor.”

Workations (work+vacation) are steadily growing in popularity. According to research, 93% of workers worldwide say they want the flexibility to choose where and when they work. Google searches for the term “workation” worldwide reached an all-time high in the last week of August 2023.

In the GRWI, Australia is number 25 and ranks six places lower than last year’s data. The nation excels in digital and physical infrastructure (18), including a top-tier e-government system (7) and physical infrastructure (12).

However, challenges include a cyber safety ranking of 35th and a high cost of living (92). Social safety is in the 24th place, with concerns about personal safety (53). Addressing these areas could further enhance Australia’s economic and social safety standings.

SURFING sounds fun but learning can be daunting, particularly upgrading from a safe foam board (foamie) to the traditional fibreglass surfboard.

To master standing on a fibreglass board can be very rewarding and that feeling of standing on a wave is noted as one of life’s finer moments.

To help you out with this transition, we’ve enlisted James Cheal, founder and owner of Chilli Surfboards to give us his best tips to get you going. Good luck.

Moving from a foamie to a fibreglass. James’ three tips:

T“You are not ready for a fibreglass board, unless you can transfer from your belly to your feet on a foamie.

Once you can stand 8 out of 10 times on a foamie then you will definitely be able to stand up on a fibreglass board”.

If getting a fibreglass board for the first time after using a foamie, don’t get something thin or narrow, stick closely to the dimensions of your foamie.

If learning to surf is on your bucket list and you’d like to skip the foamy surfboard stage, be cautious when walking into a secondhand shop for the first time as you can get it really wrong.

“You have to be honest with your ability and give them your correct weight and height. If you’re 95 kg, but you think you’ll lose some weight and get to 90 in summer just tell them you’re 95 kg”.

Day out in the Southern Highlands

HE train is loud in Bundanoon and has been for 150 years. It’s a sweet town if you haven’t popped in for a while and worth a visit. Bundanoon’s highlights can be visited in one day if you don’t want to spend a night but it’s a lovely town to take your time and enjoy the sights of local gardens.

Suggested itinerary:

Start with breakfast or brunch in Bundanoon and meals and cafe at the Morton Cafe served all day are great. There are several cafes down the main street (opposite the train station). Catching a train is a great alternative to driving. It does take longer but pops you straight out on the main drag with shops, cafes and restaurants.

Enjoy the original and historical building facades, walk north along Railway avenue and find little boutiques or plan your trip for the artisan Makers

market, 1st Sunday of the month at Bundanoon public school or 3rd Sunday of the month at the Soldiers Memorial hall

Bundanoon is the gateway to the Morton National Park. There are a couple of nice day walks here, bring a picnic lunch, sunscreen, proper footwear for walking and some water, there’s an IGA in the main street to get food and snacks.

Head to the Bundanoon pub with its beer garden out the back after your walk, and if you’re staying until nightfall, bring a torch for the walk down into the valley to see the famous glow worms that make their home in this area. Entry is via William St.

Thai dinner at Little Jacks Style 12 noon - 9.30pm Tues-Sun is very good or pop into Sally’s Corner wine to purchase mementos of the area on your way home if driving. Open Sat- Sun 10.30am - 4.30pm.

Check your paths meet the Australian standard for accessibility AS 1428.1. Cooper fell one night (at a big name caravan park) and repairs to the

chair were $2800 and the pain flare left him bedbound”.

2. Ramps

These are easier for your property to update as many ramps are mobile and easy to install or build. Entry to doors, reception, pool and playground areas and toilets also need to be smooth because travelling with chronic pain can result in uncomfortable jarring through vibration.

3. Maintenance Team

MINI has detailed pricing for its all-electric Countryman E and SE range ahead of the model’s local launch in the third quarter of this year.

The electric duo – which are offered in multiple grades – will join internal combustion engine powered Countryman variants and are built upon an architecture shared with the current BMW iX1.

Pricing for the range will begin at $64,990 plus on-road costs for the entry E Core front-wheel drive and top out at $77,990 + ORC for the flagship SE All4 JCW Sport – or approximately $15,000 more than the equivalent petrol-powered range.

Rivalling the likes of the BMW X1, Kia Niro, and Volvo C40, the Mini Countryman measures 4444mm long, 1843mm wide, and 1661mm tall, and rides on a 2692mm wheelbase. Luggage capacity ranges from 460 litres in fiveseat mode through 1450 litres all told.

Countryman E variants feature a 150kW and 250Nm single electric motor and 63.8kWh lithium-ion battery which can deliver a driving range of up to 462km. A 0-100km/h time of 8.6 seconds is quoted.

Countryman SE variants add a second electric motor on the rear axle to deliver all-wheel drive and offer 230kW and 494Nm, the same battery pack, and a range claim of 433km. The model is three seconds faster in the sprint to 100km/h (5.6sec).

Charging for both models is listed at 29 minutes against the standard 20 –80 per cent measure.

The Core grade offers as standard 18-inch alloy wheels, dusk-sensing LED headlights with auto high beam, LED tail-lights, hands free and powered tailgate functionality, the choice of body-coloured or Jet Black wing mirrors and roof, a 9.4-inch OLED infotainment cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, inductive smartphone charging, Mini personal assistant, a six-speaker/100-watt audio

system, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, a sport steering wheel and seats, and choice of grey/ blue or black/blue cloth upholstery.

For Classic variants Mini adds a panoramic glass sunroof, augmented reality satellite navigation, heated front seats, and (on SE grades) All4 exterior styling elements.

Moving onto Favoured variants we find 19-inch alloys (20-inch on SE grades), UV glazing, a 12-speaker/365-watt Harman Kardon audio package, Anthracite headlining, JCW front seats with electric adjustment, and a choice of Beige, Dark Petrol or Vintage Brown Vescin upholstery.

Finally, on JCW Sport variants, we find 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, body stripes in Jet Black or Chilli Red, adaptive suspension, JCW brakes and exterior styling elements, paddle shifters and a JCW steering wheel, and JCW Black Vescin/Cord upholstery.

Across the range, the electric Countryman is fitted with a detailed range of safety equipment, including AEB,

blind-spot monitoring, exit warning, front and rear parking sensors, intelligent emergency alarm, and a reversing camera.

Classic grades and higher add adaptive cruise control, auto speed limiter, drive recorder (in-built dashcam) and interior camera, parking assistant, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

QUATRE Café opened in July 2022 to honour Veronique Sakr who was tragically killed, along with her three cousins - Antony, Angelina and Siennah Abdallah – on a fateful night on February 1 2020 at Oatlands by a drunk and drugged driver.

Quatre is a French word for ‘four’ and we made it as a placename to remind us of Veronique’s love and passion for cooking, eating and engaging with people.

Our Love Wall inside the Café is dedicated to these four children we deeply love but lost in horrific circumstances beyond our belief.

The Love Wall also allows our community to honour the loved ones they too have lost in similar or other circumstances by pinning a photograph of their loved ones on the wall.

Through the Love Wall, we can continue the bonds between us beyond physical death because we believe heartfelt love lives on forever.

The Café has also become a

gathering place where people come together to share a coffee and quality meals with their family, friends and neighbours in a friendly, relaxed and warm environment.

Some of the profits from the Café are directed to supporting Bridget Sakr’s charity called Heartfelt, which is an online community created to support people experiencing grief and loss.

The Veronique Sakr Scholarship at Santa Sabina College where Veronique was a student, has been initiated through funding from the Café to support the education of a young girl at the College.

DUNGEONS RAGONS WAYNE Fernandes

OUBLE amputee Dwayne Fernandes, 38, was born without his fibulas and some toes and fingers, which affects his balance.

Before he was 3 years old, he had five surgeries and at age 11, Dwayne decided to replace his legs with prosthetic limbs.

Dwayne receives disability supports from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which help him to live his life in Western Sydney.

“I’m a high-energy amputee so I need good technology behind my prosthetic legs to get the most out of them. The prosthetic legs the NDIS funds mimics anyone else’s legs – I can walk up a hill, or I can run around with my five-year-old daughter,” Dwayne said.

Dwayne also uses his NDIS plan to access support to build on his mobility and strength.

“I’m all about mobility. I know eventually I will use a wheelchair in the future, so I want to maximise every opportunity I have.”

Dwayne describes himself as a double amputee, world record holding tower climber, husband and father of two.

But Dwayne is also one third of the brains behind Minds at Play, a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) online program to teach young people who live with a disability how to communicate and socialise.

Dwayne’s love for D&D began eight years ago when he needed an outlet for some stress in his life.

“My godchild has autism and I wondered if D&D would help give him the tools to engage in social situations while playing a game. I did some research and found there’s lots of benefits of playing D&D for people with autism,” Dwayne said.

Running the first D&D session online in June 2020, Dwayne and his business partners, Dan Papallo and Jeff Ozog had no idea starting their side business in the middle of a pandemic would have a silver lining.

“We started with 4 players, now we have over 530, and 40 employees,” Dwayne said.

“Part of our initial success was because of COVID. We played online and our players never left their safe space which meant they were open to trying more things.”

Ruth Jansen’s son Jacob has autism and is among many kids who have ben efitted from Minds at Play.

“It was beneficial having Jacob involved with such engaging personali ties. Dwayne does a fantastic job of cre ating teams of kids with their various strengths and abilities,” Ruth said.

“Jacob learned how to listen to the input of others and how to work with his team to achieve outcomes.

“Social skills and boundaries are one of the greatest hurdles for Jacob and that safe environment helped him develop those skills, which will help him in the long run.”

Progress like Jacob’s is why Dwayne is excited to watch Minds at Play grow and diversify. Their sessions are growing more popular and new programs are adding value to the autistic community.

“At Minds at Play, anyone can come play, learn and make some new friends,” Dwayne said.

Local area coordination partners work with people with disability aged nine to 64. For most people in this age range, a local area coordinator will be their main point of contact for the NDIS.

Local area coordination supports people with disability to create and work towards their goals, build capacity to make their own decisions and choices and access the supports they need to live the life they choose.

Remote Community Connectors

Remote Community Connectors, also known as NDIS Connectors, play a key role in helping to deliver the NDIS in remote and very remote communities.

This includes First Nations people with disability and those from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background.

NDIS Connectors work together to improve the lives of people with disability, their families and community.

Specialising in the provision of culturally responsive care, we recognise culture and language is key to building community connections and empowering people to reach their full potential.
