Company to operate viral vector facility

Lifesaving therapies at Westmead

THE

Viral vectors are a key component of many cell and gene therapies, and vaccines, which are increasingly being used to treat cancer, genetic diseases and infections.

Viral vector technology uses viruses that are harmless to humans to carry genetic therapies to the target organs and systems that cause significant human diseases.

Establishing a commercial company with an agile, responsive operating model will provide a strong base for the sustainable,

long-term success of the Viral Vector Manufacturing facility.

Stage 1 of the facility is operational for use in gene therapy research with the first clinical trial anticipated to commence in 2025 using vectors from the facility.

The Stage 2 facility is currently under construction and once completed will provide NSW with a commercial-scale viral vector manufacturing facility capable of meeting the growing demand for viral vectors.

Completion of construction works is expected by the end of 2024, with Good Manufacturing Practice certification to follow soon after. The company is to be registered as Viral Vector Manufacturing Facility Pty Ltd. It will manufacture the vectors and supply them to

specialised healthcare staff, who will deliver the therapies to patients.

Overall, the NSW Government has committed $134.5 million to establish the Facility and to manufacture viral vector products for research and clinical trials.

Minister for Health Ryan Park said: “My priority as health minister has been to embrace innovative initiatives in improving health outcomes for our community.

“I am so proud that NSW Health is at the forefront of this world leading treatment.“Today’s announcement will have real life changing benefits for people suffering from genetic diseases, cancers and viral infections.

“These therapies are expanding rapidly,

targeting more and more genetic diseases, cancer and infections – significantly increasing the number of patients who can and will benefit from viral vectors.

“This expansion in potential applications, treatments and patient benefits is not however matched by current manufacturing capacity, either locally or globally, which is causing a delay in us achieving these benefits.”

Historic Locomotives on the Move Home for NSW’s rail history in GWS

NSW Railway’s historic locomotives and carriages have found a new home in the heart of Western Sydney.

THE $9.4M Chullora Heritage Hub is a centralised storage facility for 50 of the state’s 220 heritage locomotives and carriages.

The historic trains have travelled by road and rail to the former Tank Annex Building at the Chullora Railway Workshops from three separate sites at Eveleigh, Thirlmere and Broadmeadow.

The building has received a thorough upgrade to ensure the protection and preservation of the historic collec-

tion with environmental, security and fire safety improvements delivered.

While the new location is not open for public viewing due to its function as a maintenance facility, it will give volunteers from Transport Heritage NSW the space they need to work on these one-of-a-kind engines.

The site at Chullora has been an important location for railway maintenance for more than a century. It was first established in 1913, and many of the buildings within the precinct date from the 1920s, with the Tank Annex building operating as part of the maintenance facility until 1994.

Among the rollingstock moving into the new building are: Locomotive 1219, this locomotive and its class dominated express and mail train services in the late 1800s, with many hauling branch line services right up until the 1950s.

• Locomotive 5096 was one of 280 introduced from 1890. This was the largest class of locomotives used anywhere in Australia and hauled goods trains more than two million kilometres until its retirement in 1965.

• Locomotive 2606 was one of 20 tank locomotives manufactured by Scottish company Dubs and Co. Introduced from early 1892, they were supposed to assist engines travel up the mountain from Penrith to Katoomba. Limited water tank capacity and problems negotiating the numerous curves hindered their work, so they were reassigned to hauling coal trains to Waterfall and Newcastle. Before its retirement in 1970, 2606 spent its later years shunting carriages into position at Central Station.

Another 70 locomotives and carriages will remain at the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere, including operational assets like the famous 3801.

The museum is open to the public 7 days a week, with heritage train rides operating every weekend on the newly refurbished Loop Line.

All historic trains are operated by Transport Heritage NSW.

Tram testing in Parramatta CBD Light rail new milestone

THE Parramatta Light Rail project has reached a major milestone in the heart of Western Sydney overnight, when the first tram rolled through Parramatta CBD as testing ramps up ahead of services beginning later this year.

The 45-metre-long light rail vehicle travelled slowly under police escort on its inaugural 6.6-kilometre journey from the stabling facility in Camellia, through Parramatta Square, along Church St, through the hospital precinct, to its final stop at Westmead.

Parramatta locals and visitors can look forward to seeing more tram trials through the city, during the day and night, with more than 2,000 hours of testing to be completed before it’s given the green light to take passengers.

When the light rail is in service, more

than 16,000 people are expected to use the Church Street stop each day to connect to more than 60 local eateries, shops and businesses.

Last night’s test also marks the first time a 63-tonne tram travelled over the new Bidgee Bidgee Bridge in Rosehill, which allows vehicles to cross James Ruse Drive without disrupting traffic.

The bridge, named after the famed leader of the Burramattagal clan of the Dharug People, is the largest of six new bridges built for the project.

The community is reminded to be alert for trams when walking, riding or driving near the light rail, and to follow signs and traffic directions. A comprehensive safety campaign continues to be rolled out in line with the testing program.

The Parramatta Square light rail stop will connect to the future Metro West station, due to open in 2032, and Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2, which has now been granted NSW planning approval.

New service centres to open Northwest residents benefit

THE NSW Government is expanding access to Service NSW Centres for the residents of Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, with a new Service NSW Centre officially opening at Glenmore Park today.

Close to 50,000 customer visits are expected at Glenmore Park Service Centre in the first year, with communities in Glenmore Park, Jamisontown, Emu Plains, Glenbrook and surrounding areas set to benefit the most from the new Service NSW Centre.

The new centre offers a third option for people living in the foot of the Blue Mountains alongside the Penrith and Springwood Service NSW centres, with team members able to assist customers with a range of transactions such as licence renew-

als, Working with Children Check renewals and Owner-Builder permits.

It follows the opening of the Macquarie Fields Driver Testing Centre in December, which provides about 300 driving tests a week and supports overseas licence holders converting to a NSW driver licence.

Meanwhile, a new Service NSW Centre set to open in Tallawong this year will provide an additional option for people living in Sydney’s north-west.

Driver testing will also be accommodated at the Glenmore Park Service NSW Centre, with about 80 tests available each week.

The centre is located on Level 1 of HomeCo. Glenmore Park Town Centre at 33 Town Terrace and is open Monday to Friday 8:30am – 5pm and Saturday 8:30am – 12:30pm.

Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said: “I am pleased to see the people of Glenmore Park and the surrounding communities, including Emu Plains and Glenbrook, will now have a Service NSW Centre right on their doorstep.

“Western Sydney is home to many busy, hardworking families, and it is so important that our mums and dads have the services they need where they live.

“Opening facilities like this in growing communities means families are not spending unnecessary time away from one another while doing things like getting their licence renewed.”

Reducing wait times in EDs

LAST week marked the inaugural meeting of NSW’s Emergency Department (ED) Taskforce, uniting clinical experts to address lengthy wait times in the state’s bustling EDs. With over three million attendances annually and rising serious cases, the Taskforce aims to ensure timely, quality care for NSW residents. Priorities include refining care models, optimizing workforce strategies, and reducing avoidable ED visits. The Taskforce, chaired by Dr. Trevor Chan and Professor Matthew Daly, will engage regularly with stakeholders to drive improvements.

Theory about conspiracy theories

MANY individuals embrace conspiracy theories, but a study led by Dr. Mathew Marques from La Trobe University dis-

pels notions of a growing ‘pandemic of misinformation.’ Surveying nearly 500 Australians and New Zealanders over six months, researchers found beliefs remained relatively stable over time.

Participants considered theories ranging from 9/11 to COVID-19, revealing some rare converts and apostates. Despite occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic, belief in microchip-laden vaccines remained low. The study underscores the nuanced nature of conspiracy belief formation, challenging the notion of a rapid descent into conspiratorial thinking.

Doctors back anti-smoking drug

THE Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) backs a new smoking cessation drug, Cytisine, as it awaits approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration. RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins emphasizes its potential impact amid upcoming removals of nicotine replacement therapy options from public schemes. Highlighting Cytisine’s proven efficacy and minimal side effects, she urges support for its scheduling. With concerns over rising nicotine use, especially among youth, Dr Higgins advocates for expanded cessation tools while encouraging individuals to consult their GPs for tailored support in quitting.

Defibrillator access on country trains

REGIONAL passengers now have easier access to potentially life-saving healthcare with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) available on all NSW TrainLink coach services. Following a successful trial, the NSW Labor Government completed the rollout in partnership with St John Ambulance NSW. These devices,

accessible to all without prior training, significantly improve survival chances during emergencies, particularly in remote areas with longer response times. This initiative aims to save lives and offers peace of mind to passengers.

Action to reduce harm from gaming

AS concerns over late-night gaming and its associated harm rise, the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) has revised Guideline 16 on late-night gaming applications. With a focus on minimizing gaming-related harm, ILGA assesses applications under the Gaming Machines Act 2001. Evidence highlights risks, especially after 2 am. ILGA Chairperson Caroline Lamb emphasises the need for effective measures by venues and ILGA’s authority to impose conditions to mitigate harm.

Railway crossings set for improvement

NSW railway crossings are set for improvements through the Australian Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund (RLCUF). With a focus on enhancing safety and reducing crashes, the $160 million commitment aims to fund upgrades across regional areas. The NSW Government’s allocation of $28 million will support projects such as retro-reflective boom gates and updated signage. Headspace opens at Hawkesbury Mental health a local concern

THE new headspace Hawkesbury centre was officially opened on Friday March 1 by Emma McBride MP, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health, together with Susan Templeman MP, Member for Macquarie.

Headspace Hawkesbury is federally funded through Wentworth Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, who commissioned Uniting NSW.ACT to establish the service.

The full-service centre provides free early intervention support to young people aged 12-25 years across mental health, physical health, work and study, and alcohol and other drug needs.

The official launch welcomed stakeholders from across the region who played a part in helping to secure and establish the centre, including young people from the community.

It was an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate the successful opening of a new service to benefit young people in the local area.

Lizz Reay, CEO of Wentworth Healthcare, said they have worked closely with Uniting NSW.ACT to deliver a service that addresses the increasing mental health needs of the Hawkesbury region, where anxiety and depression are two of the top five most prevalent diagnoses.

It is estimated that of those aged

5-17 years in the Hawkesbury, over a quarter have mental health needs or are affected by a mental health disorder.

“We are passionate about improving the mental health of our local communities and know there is a real need for ongoing services in the Hawkesbury. headspace services play a vital role in supporting young people and their mental health, as well as their family and friends,” said Ms Reay.

“Young people in the Hawkesbury have been through so much over the past few years, from drought to bushfires, a pandemic and multiple floods. Early intervention programs such as headspace are critical as they not only impact young people’s lives in the present but can influence the whole community as these young people mature into adulthood,” she said.

“Together with the community, we have been advocating for over seven years for additional youth mental health services in the Hawkesbury and are proud to finally open this headspace centre.

“The addition of headspace Hawkesbury means that our region now has a headspace in every local government area, adding to headspace Katoomba, Lithgow and Penrith,” said Ms Reay.

To meet the needs of the region, the headspace centre has been co-designed by the community creating a space designed by young people, for young people.

Through the planning process, Uniting NSW.ACT conducted a series of focus groups, interviews and surveys to gather information from 129 young people across the Hawkesbury area, as well as parents, carers and others, like teachers, school counsellors, psychologists and youth officers.

This information helped inform all aspects of the centre, from the floorplan, furnishings and colours to the ways that headspace information is presented to young people.

With the help of community consultation, the service is also providing permanent outreach in Windsor. This is in addition to outreach services still being provided in North Richmond through Flood Grant Funding.

Chantal Nagib, Head of Recovery at Uniting NSW.ACT, said they are thrilled to see the new permanent headspace site in Hawkesbury open its doors.

“Our dedicated team is committed to working with Wentworth Healthcare to provide the mental health support this community so desperately needs.

“With our experience in operating headspace 2 Wentworth Healthcare Limited (ABN 88 155 904 975) provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains PHN. 5/03/2024 Katoomba and Penrith in this region, and recent outreach services in the Hawkesbury, we are well placed to deliver this new headspace centre,” said Ms Nagib.

Jason Trethowan, headspace CEO, said: “Nearly 40 per cent of young people in Australia aged 16 to 24 have experienced a mental health disorder in the previous year. That’s why the work happening at headspace Hawkesbury, and at headspace centres across the country, is so important.

“Providing young people with a place where they can get friendly and inclusive mental health services is at the core of all we do at headspace.

“Young people are resilient and, with support from organisations like headspace, they can and do weather tough times to get back on track.”

Located behind the Richmond Mall complex at 120 Francis Street, the centre provides young people with easy access being close to transport, parking and shops.

The headspace centre is open 9 am – 5 pm weekdays, except public holidays.

Afterhours appointments can be made from 5 pm – 6 pm by individual arrangement. Outreach is provided every Thursday at North Richmond Community Centre from 10 am – 5 pm and every Friday at Old Hawkesbury Hospital, 6 Christie Street, Windsor from 9 am – 5 pm, except public holidays.

Young people can walk-in at any of these locations during their opening hours. No appointment or referral is needed.

Multi-lingual cause for celebration

AS one of the most diverse cities in Australia, Blacktown has a large proportion multi-cultural residents that collectively are fluent in about 180 languages.

And that is why every February 21 the International Mother Language Day is celebrated here with pride, Blacktown City mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said.

“Nowhere in Australia is the promotion of diversity of language and culture more important than in Blacktown City,” Clr Bleasdale said in his speech at

the Village Green’s gathering for Mother Language Day.

“Language is so often the centre of our cultures and by retaining our Mother Language we retain the links to our Mother culture.

“We celebrate our diversity and enjoy our differences through our food, stories, art and dance, and so often the common thread linking all those things that distinguish our cultures is our Mother language.”

The mayor also urged his audi-

ence “to give a particular focus on the preservation of First Nations languages” because the Indigenous people are significant to the country’s identity and history.

The internationally recognised day aims to promote the preservation and protection of all ‘home’ languages used by communities across the world.

COMMUNITY groups undertaking activities which reduce stigma and enhance help seeking to reduce the risk of suicide are encouraged to apply for Southwestern Sydney PHN’s current round of Suicide Prevention Grants.

Grants of between $50,000 and $200,000 are being offered under

the Targeted Regional Initiatives for Suicide Prevention program to eligible groups across Southwestern Sydney. Initiatives delivered through the grants will engage with individuals and/or groups from priority populations to reduce their risk of suicide through early interventions which improve mental health, give a bet-

ter understanding of suicide, reduce stigma surrounding suicide and build community resilience.

Target populations include men, First Nations peoples, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, recent refugees, people culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, people living in semi-rural and rural

“We didn’t expect this year to be as busy since we started our food relief during the bushfires, floods and pandemic that there’s a lot out there travelling as far as Campbelltown and Blacktown to sustain their families,” Mr Singh, Turbans 4 Australia founder said.

“We do get a lot of requests from people on limited income because they’re not earning enough and can’t support everything they need.

“After paying rent or mortgage, spending on fuel and medicines and other basic bills, its food on the priority bills that falls behind.

“They compromise on food because they need to put fuel in the car and pay the kids’ tuition fees, so the struggle is very real for them.”

Mr Singh’s charity based in Clyde, Western Sydney has volunteers across NSW and other states and territories aiming to meet the needs of an estimated 1.2 million

disadvantaged and low-income families with children.

Mr Singh said his charity is concerned about the staggering food insecurity findings that at least 70 percent of these struggling families are missing out on proper meals at least once a week, and half of them won’t have a meal for a whole day.

They recently partnered with DoorDash to deliver food and basic goods to disadvantaged people who cannot travel to their warehouse at Clyde.

The warehouse on 14 Matha Street, is often sufficiently stocked with hampers that Mr Singh and his band of volunteers hand out every Sunday at midday to a queue of people.

But now, the usual $50 to $100 worth of goods donated by benevolent people are no longer coming in regularly.

“Every kind family that usually donate to us are also struggling with high cost of living so donations have dropped off,” he said.

“A lot of charities like us are doing it tough, too, because they are struggling as well.

“That’s one of our main concerns right now and we are finding ways to address this because it is impacting our operations.

“It seems the government is not thinking the same way as communities are.”

DoorDash is among the companies that recently lent a hand donating $15,000 worth of gift cards for disadvantaged young families, seniors and people with disabilities.

“It is evident these food reliefs are working, we know that having access to meals, essentials, and other items can make a difference for these groups,” DoorDash director Rachel Murphy said.

“We are looking out for more people and businesses who can give us a helping hand in this current situation,” Mr Singh said.

Support for the new Blacktown Quarter Community consulted over vision

LOCAL MPS and business have backed the community consultation by Walker Corporation for the recently announced Blacktown Quarter.

Walker Corporation has revealed their Blacktown city centre redevelopment will be called Blacktown Quarter alongside the launch of a series of community surveys to be undertaken in NSW’s largest city.

In the announcement, Walker managing director and chief executive officer, David Gallant paid tribute to their late founder Lang Walker AO, whose vision will transform Blacktown into a new world-class city centre for Western Sydney.

“Lang was passionate about Walker delivering a new town centre for Blacktown linking people-friendly spaces with thousands of new jobs, healthcare and learning opportunities and his vision has become our reality,” Mr Gallant said.

Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali has been a strong advocate for transforming Blacktown with pioneering initiatives such securing Australian Catholic University multi-faculty campus, redevelopment of Warwick Lane precinct, BEST and animal rehoming facility.

Mr Bali said: “Blacktown Quarter has the opportunity for our city to continue the transformational journey and I welcome community consultation.

“Every area has its own local unique qualities and characteristics which can be realised through comprehensive community consultation.

“Blacktown Quarter can be the gateway development for a futuristic inspired central living district for our city.”

Blacktown residents will have the opportunity to have their say in an online survey to provide input into what they want their future city centre to look like.

Healthicare is a new health service located at the Blacktown Exercise Sports and Technology hub (BEST) that aims to help people in Western Sydney. It is supported by WentWest in partnership with the Mt Druitt Medical Practitioners Association

Healthicare uses a new way of working together called a “neighbourhood-based model of care”. This means that GPs and other health professionals work together to provide better care for people who need it most. This includes people who are very unwell and have many health problems.

Powerful hybrid Artura Spider joins McLaren range, Coupe variants

MCLAREN has revealed its Artura Spider this week, the model joining the three-year-old Coupe in the British supercar marque’s range.

McLaren’s first hybridised convertible packs an additional 15kW – for a total of 515kW and 720Nm – matching the Coupe’s uprated 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and electric motor combination in being capable of accelerating to 100km/h in just 3.0 seconds.

McLaren says the model can accelerate from standstill to 200km/h in 8.4 seconds and 0-300km/h in an astonishing 21.6 seconds.

Existing MY24 owners will be offered the 15kW uptick in power at no extra cost.

As a challenger to the likes of the now-defunct Ferrari F8 Spider and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo, the 1560kg Artura Spider boasts an electronically limited top speed of 330km/h and a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 353kW per tonne.

Joining the power increase the Artura range in cludes a newly revised eight-speed SSG transmission (with shift speeds now 25 per cent faster), updated driveline mounts, faster act ing dampers, newly styled alloy wheels, and a re-engineered exhaust system.

It also boasts a stronger carbon-ce ramic braking system with improved cooling, an increased electric-only driving range of 33km (+3km), and an “extended palette of exterior colours”.
