Ambitious Hills aims for 50K new jobs

RECENT wide-ranging public consultation held by the Hills Shire Council resulted in ambitious plans to create 50,000 new jobs and funnel the region’s growth by 2041. The Hills Shire Economic Growth Plan was endorsed by all councilors in the October 10 ordinary meeting to boost the northwest Sydney region’s capabilities as a hub for innovation, health and science, mayor Dr Peter Gangemi said. Dr Gangemi said the key industry sectors the council will attract to invest in the region are those in healthcare, social assistance, education and training, advanced manufactured and scientific and technical services. Dr Gangemi said the plan would also boost the region’s popular agri-tourism industries on its northern rural fringes such as Gunderman and Maroota. All those industries the shire would attract would be able to capitalise on the wide range of skills locally available from its nearly 200,000 residents.

“It is a clear goal of Council to help foster economic growth and the creation of local jobs in The Hills,” Dr Gangemi said. “Council plays a crucial role in supporting businesses and providing direction for the economic development of our Shire. “Our vision contains specific actions that promote local business and enhance local industries, such as looking at how we can boost agritourism in the rural parts of our Shire.”

Under the plan, key industries would be assisted to attract skilled and educated employees, encourage visitations and increase employment opportunities enabling residents to work close to home. “I am very proud of this plan, and I look forward to working with our business community to drive opportunities for this region,” Dr Gangemi said. contains ways to enhance the industries capabilities through educational opportunities such as workshops, forums and networking. The shire would also continue to upgrade its local community infrastructure such as green spaces, roads, pathways and cycleways. More new local infrastructure and transport links were contained in the plan, including connecting the Norwest metro

line to the Aerotropolis and the upcoming Western Sydney Airport. Dr Gangemi said the transport plans would advocate for the establishment of a mass transit link between Norwest and Parramatta via Baulkham Hills to the new airport, facilitating better business connections and increased accessibility. Rouse Hill Hospital final plans

MPs seek resident feedback

IVERSTONE MP Warren Kirby is urging residents to get involved in the planning of the new Rouse Hill Hospital initiated by the previous Coalition government now on its final scope with construction set next year. NSW health minister Ryan Park was in Rouse Hill in October with Mr Kirby to announce another tranche of $400M from the Minns Labor government going towards construction. Mr Park also announced the appointment of Julia Underwood as Rouse Hill Hospital general manager. Ms Underwood has nearly three decades experience with NSW Health, her most recent role was director of redevelopment at Campbelltown Hospital. “The success of the new Rouse Hill Hospital relies on the active involvement and valuable insights of our community, ensuring its design and function is welcoming, accessible and supports the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff,” Mr Kirby said. Mr Park said a key component of the new hospital development in the booming northwest Sydney will be attracting a skilled multidisciplinary health workforce. “Julia has the unique skills required to support the

delivery of this state-of-the-art hospital. “As General Manager, Julia’s focus will be on establishing the executive team at Rouse Hill Hospital as well as operational, governance and built environment plans.” The final scope for the hospital’s development will be determined through the planning process and residents’ input are needed. “Rouse Hill Hospital will be one of the first hospitals under our government to combine the best contemporary healthcare facilities with services that support our highly skilled workforce, including childcare and health worker accommodation,” Mr Park said. The hospital will become part of the Western Sydney Local Health District and is expected to include: • an emergency and urgent care department. • In-patient beds. • Day surgery unit. • Short stay medical assessment services. • Pathology, pharmacy and medical imaging services. • Health hub for virtual care and hospital in the home services. • Pre-habilitation, rehabilitation, and lifestyle medicine. • Outpatient and ambulatory care services including

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the centre was important as a shared space for social groups, local not-for-profit organisations, cultural gatherings and events. “The completion of St Marys Community Centre is an important milestone for our community. The upgrades have made the centre a welcoming space for

everyone in our community,” Cr Hitchen said. “The accessibility of this centre is of a high standard and the inclusion of an Adult Change Table will allow more people in our community to enjoy the facilities. “St Marys Community Centre is the final community centre completed in the Penrith Community Hall Network Upgrades project, following the improved facilities at Arthur Neave Memorial Hall in Werrington and Floribunda Community Centre in Glenmore Park in 2022.” The upgrades at St Marys Community Centre have been made possible with $1.9m from the Australian Government and $2.76m in funding from Penrith City Council as part of its ongoing building renewal program.

Region’s women setting the bar higher than ever

WHO’S who in the ladder of industries in Sydney’s west will surprise many, as a record number of accomplished local women vie for the top gong in the 2023 Western Sydney Women Award later this month. From our bustling City of Parramatta alone, nine of the finalists (pictured) whose names are perhaps unknown to many, are some of the region’s brightest talents, award founder Amanda Rose said. “Their passion and drive never ceases to amaze me,” Ms Rose, founder of Western Sydney Women and Small Business Women Australia said. “The recognition they’re receiving is wholly deserved. Every year the bar is set higher with our awe-inspiring nominees.” The finalist for the Western Sydney Women Educator of the Year Award, Lucy Lin is a Western Sydney University lecturer specialising in mentoring students to become successful entrepreneurs. “People are starting to feel they have options [on career choices] which is significant for women of colour especially,” Ms Lin told WSE. “It was quite a different era for women when I was growing up in the 80s here. “There were so many barriers for women [from multicultural backgrounds] affecting their self-confidence and language skills, for example. “Now, each course we run at the university to educate and upskill our future entrepreneurs, we get at least over 100 from women in every single workshop which has as many men who register as well.” Ms Lin was six years old when her Taiwanese parents settled in Parramatta. Her parents are in their 70s now and still actively working, she said. “Like the many stories of migrants to Australia, my parents came here without knowing anyone, they couldn’t speak English, but they had to do what they had to do and worked hard for me and my younger sister.”

The nomination for the award is also a first for Ms Lin. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be recognised for the first time in my life as an educator,” she said. Before teaching business at WSU, Ms Lin worked for many years as an English language teacher in Australia and overseas. The WSW award is the “only awards program in Australia that represents women at all stages in their lives and in their chosen career,” Ms Rose said. An apprentice electrician with Endeavour Energy, Sharni Harrison, also of Parramatta, is nominated for the Western Sydney Woman in Trades Award. Ms Harrison is a young mother and a member of the Girl Guides who said she was “juggling the joys of parenthood with an apprenticeship making plans for daughter Saige’s birthday party”. Meeting women along the way To inspire other women to take up jobs dominated by male workers as the country is reeling with skills shortage is stepping up and it’s one way for Ms Harrison to give back to all women she meets along the way. “I get to meet a lot of people in the community and seeing the positive reaction to as an apprentice electrician is inspiring to me and I hope to give back to all I meet,” she said. She grew up in the eastern suburbs but spent most of her adulthood in Parramatta where she and her husband, who is a member of the Australian Defence Force, have been residing for over a decade. “We have our four-year-old daughter who I hope can look up to what I have done with my apprenticeship and future career, and see that she can do anything she puts her mind to.” The finalists come from various communities from across Inner West, Greater West, North West and South West suburbs. “From the very beginning, we’ve been honoured to showcase the remarkable talents that

exist in our region. This year’s finalists carry on that proud tradition,” Ms Rose said. Ms Rose said the region’s up and coming women leaders were specifically chosen because they are achieving in business, inspiring role models in industry, demonstrated skills in a career, have made significant contribution to their community and have made a difference as a woman from Western Sydney. The category winners and coveted Western Sydney Woman of the Year will be announced on Wednesday night, November 29, at Hudson Hotel in Seven Hills. F numbers are an indication, 54% Australians think that cheaper or free TAFE or University courses are the most effective way to solve the country’s skills shortage. A sizeable 22% believe it is also the quickest way to address the gap. The data comes from a recent survey of independent panel comprising 1012 Australians commissioned by immigration assistance and advice platform ‘Immigration to Australia’. The research aimed at finding out what Australians thought was the most effective way to address the current skills shortage in the country. The survey assumes importance given that Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a higher number of job vacancies this year and a persistent gap between the average number of qualified and suitable applicants. Job vacancies were 89.3% higher in May 2023 than in February 2020, pointing directly at a persistent labour shortage across many industries. The Australian government has responded by putting in place the delivery of 180,000 fee-free TAFE and vocational education courses running throughout the country this year. Respondents of the survey were given a choice of 14 solutions and asked to select the options they believed would be the most effective in resolving the crisis. While 50% respondents thought that government incentives, such as tax breaks for companies that hire and train apprentices and interns, 46% thought that partnerships between industries and educational institutions would be most effective in filling in this skills gap. When it came to the quickest way to solve the crisis, 22% participants tilted towards cheaper/free TAFE or university courses, followed closely at 12% who vot-

ed in favour of accepting a higher number of skilled migrants. The survey indicated that a mere 7% were in favour of companies outsourcing work to offshore teams, thus demonstrating a strong desire for jobs to remain onshore in Australia. OST-COVID has been a trying time for car dealers, as the ensuing car supply shortage resulted in extremely limited stock to sell, which has seen many dealers trying to make money in other ways, such as by increasing the costs of financing. Buying a car is usually an emotional experience, especially for consumers. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying a shiny new car; you sit down with the finance person, and they make it all sound so easy - the payments are something you can afford, all you need to do is sign the paperwork and you can be driving your new car in next to no time. However, it’s when you get home and take a closer look at the paperwork, only to realise the rate you have been offered by the dealership is not that flash. At this point, buyer’s remorse usually sets in, but it doesn’t have to. The good news for SMEs is that they use their cars as tools of the trade – and while they can also get caught up in the heady emotions of buying a new car, they are more likely to shop around for a better deal. The best way to compare pricing is to get a quote from your dealer, and/or your finance professional and take the time to look over the overall costs of the quote and not just the interest rate. Some quotes are rate + fees and some quotes include all fees in the interest rate. It’s best to get this in writing and look at the details with someone you trust.

Different types of agreements are available nowadays to fund a new car. The type of agreement that’s the best fit for you depends on the type of business for which you’ll be using your new vehicle. Most businesses choose to finance under a chattel mortgage, as this option allows you to claim back GST, depreciation and interest (when the vehicle acquired is used for business purposes). A chattel can be done with or without a residual, and the value of the residual should be set at the value of what the car should realistically be worth at the end of the term of the loan. LACKTOWN MP Stephen Bali welcomed the 80 WEXPO delegation to NSW Parliament House on October 11where three keynote speakers presented findings from WEXPO to parliamentarians. Leading Western Sydney based organisations SydWest CEO Elfa Moraitakis, WentWest CEO Ray Messom and Australian Catholic University (ACU) Blacktown Dean Dr Valentine Mukuria made presentations of their findings from special community forums that were held at WEXPO Blacktown in September. NSW Parliament House presentation

was titled Western Sydney Goes to Parliament with speakers providing direct feedback to parliamentarians. Mr Bali said events such as WEXPO played a key role in highlighting issues within the wider Western Sydney community that often go unnoticed such as: the costof-living pressures particularly on newly arrived refugees and community attitudes towards local healthcare management. “WEXPO has demonstrated that organisations that have community welfare as their prime mission can have a voice in terms of highlighting key issues that leads to a better understanding of the real condi-

tions faced by our community,” Mr Bali said. Premier Chris Minns was expected to deliver the key address at the event but he was called away to be part of the vigil commemorating the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. David Harris MP Minster for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty; Gaming and Racing; Medical Research; and Central Coast told the audience that there were many valuable lessons learned from WEXPO that not only impact western Sydney but across NSW. Mr Harris said, “WEXPO was a great initiative bringing businesses, community organisations and residents together

through forums, keynote presentations and business stalls. We need to have one on the Central Coast! Parliamentarians are hearing firsthand from people impacted by Government policy and being presented with potential solutions going forward.” Mr Bali thanked all the organisers involved as they invested many hours to make this a uniquely Western Sydney showcase of business presentations, exchange of ideas and development of solutions.
