The Michael Ziegler farm The Michael Ziegler farm on Rt.73 near Skippack village is the location of a brick schoolhouse which still stands at the corner of Cressman Rd. The schoolhouse is known as “Ziegler’s School”. It is indicated on the map of 1848. Now a converted home with stucco over brick exterior. The original size and material appears intact, as well as the roof lines. About the mid 1800’s, the State government began to organize an education system, and as residents grew in numbers, additional schoolhouses came into use. They were constructed in areas where there may have been more families with schoolage children. Families in an area might have decided to construct a

schoolhouse for their children, instead of having to travel miles to the nearest school. Some schoolhouses, if not all, were constructed on lands owned by farmers. Many schoolhouses reflect the name of the farmer. Skippack township had seven schoolhouses in use at the peak of the “schoolhouse period” that lasted into the 1920’s, approximately. This schoolhouse was built on a farm purchased by settler Michael Ziegler, in 1727. The Ziegler family was important to the development and prosperity of Skippack on both the religious and business fronts. Michael, Sr., a minister, was highly respected in the Mennonite church and by the Lower Skippack Mennonite congregation. He was appointed a trustee by Van Bebber

for the 100 acres he transferred to the settlers of Skippack. His son Andrew was a Mennonite Bishop. His son Michael, Jr. started a tannery business as early as 1747 (operating close to 100 years) in the building on the opposite corner, across Cressman Rd. His grandson, John Ziegler, who built the house at Rt. 113 & 73, SW corner, was a well known musician and organ builder.
Listed are: J. Horace Landis, Co. Supt.; Assistants- W.D. Beyer, Caroline Niblo; Directors- Samuel P. Fox, Harry D. Kulp, Irvin S. Hallman, Jacob Buckwalter, Henry Reinford.
A long time resident recalls a teacher being Alice Smith. The writer remembers Ms. Smith as a music teacher. She was a kind person, also playing the organ on Sunday at the Trinity Church, which is her final resting place.
The pupils were: Paul K. Alderfer, Byron Anderson, Roy G. Anderson, Margaret M. Cole, Aldona Couch, Anna Ruth T. Drace, Paul Mark T. Drace, Henry M. Fretz, Ada K. Fox, Charles W. Fox, Laura W. Fox, Katie T. Grater, Newton T. Grater, Kathryn F. Hallman, Sara F. Hallman, Frank N. Kratz, Martha N. Kratz, Lizzie Mae N. Kratz, Agnes R. Kreibel, Daisy E. Mench, Norman G. Metz, Lizzie J. Reinford, Elizabeth W. Tyson, Emma W. Tyson, Ruth W. Warren, Mabel A. Whitman, Mildred A. Whitman A booklet dated April 10, 1916 was a gift to the graduating class from their teacher. The hand written inscription, inside the front cover, reads “Miss Mabel A. Witman, presented by my teacher Melvin T. Tyson, Zigler’s school, Penna.” The front reads “Best Wishes, With pleasant memories of happy days spent together in the schoolroom, this souvenir is presented to you with the best wishes of your teacher.” Celebrating Community

u yo r fo on t h g li ch or P e th e We’ll leav
Barbershop is four part a Capella singing which is known for its tight harmonies and “ringing” cords. Most people probably think of men in striped vests and straw hats when they think of Barbershop, but it has become a very complex and sophisticated craft over the years.
Porchlight is a quartet from The Liberty Belles Chorus, a chapter of Harmony Inc., which is a women’s Barbershop organization. The Belles were formed in 2006
and chartered in 2009, after meeting the membership requirements. The Belles currently have 45 members, 3 active quartets and 1 Octet. We are under the direction of Anne Bureau, a 30 year plus Barbershopper, International Judge, and much sought-after coach all around the US and Canada. Anne is also the director of The North Pennsmen, a local award-winning men’s Barbershop Chorus and chartered chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Porchlight was formed in early 2019, so we are still building our repertoire. We found each other while singing around in various groups of four after a Belles rehearsal one Monday night, and really liked our blend. We decided to have a few rehearsals and see how things came together. It’s been going very well! We rehearse once a week (as do the Belles) so we stay busy, as we also learn most of our music on our own so we are ready to work technique when we get together. We are planning to compete at the Harmony Inc. Area Contest and Convention in May of 2020, and are looking forward to the challenge! Quartet members are, Veronica Lauer, Tenor; Erin Mulder, Lead; Bonita Grady, Baritone, and Linda Franco, Bass. We all have careers, children and very busy lives outside of our wonderful hobby, but I think we all agree that singing is good for the soul. The joy of music and the sisterhood that has developed because of all of our time together has become a very important and therapeutic part of our lives. Handling
The celebrations are over and the gifts have been unwrapped. The champagne has been popped, and the ball in Times Square has dropped. After weeks of shopping, wrapping, and socializing, the holidays are suddenly over, and now it’s time to “get back to normal.” In general, we all tend to feel our best when our lives have some structure and predictability; there is a comfort in the familiar, and in not having to make lots of decisions about how to spend our time. Some people crave routine more than others, though, and for those with a strong need for order, the holidays tend to be more stressful. If you are among them, you’ll find getting back to the usual routine a welcome relief from the busyness of the holidays and will bounce-back when the holidays end. Many of us, however, find ourselves in a post-holiday funk – a little down, a little blue. Or maybe a little stressed out. It’s so common, it even has a name – the post-holiday blues. There are lots of reasons for the post-holiday blues. After lots of activities and time spent with family and friends, it might feel like there isn’t anything to look forward to, or you might feel lonely. The amazing food you enjoyed over the holidays might literally have you in a blood-sugar crash that can also impact the “happy chemicals” (serotonin) in your brain and put you in a temporary funk. You might have set some demanding or unrealistic new year’s resolutions that feel like a lot of pressure now – or have you in a harshly self-critical mindset that is bound to make you feel bad. Or you might be in a job that you were happy to get away from for a little while, and now that you’re back it’s just as stressful or unfulfilling as it was before.
If you’re among the many who are feeling down after the holidays, there are things you can do to help yourself through it. First, it helps to realize that lots of people feel the same way you do. Reminding yourself that you’re not alone and are having a very normal experience lowers stress levels and helps you to feel connected to others. Next, pay attention to what is most upsetting to you, and see if you can problem-solve to improve the situation. Feeling lonely, or like there’s nothing to look forward to now that the holidays are over? Start scheduling in some fun activities with friends. Low on energy and feeling sluggish after indulging in sweets and treats? Gently get yourself back into a healthier eating pattern, focusing on lean proteins like chicken or fish, healthy grains, and plenty of fruits and veggies. Bundle up and get outside to take a brisk walk to increase energy and improve mood. Back at work and feeling miserable? Pay attention to what you dislike about your job. Is it a temporary frustration at work, or something a talk with your supervisor could resolve? See if you can find solutions to the issues that are making you unhappy. Stressed out about your financial situation now that the holidays are over? See if you can make a plan to get yourself back on track and write it down, committing to stick with your plan. Last, think back to how you were feeling before the holidays started. Be honest with yourself – is this a temporary set-back from holiday let-down, or are the issues that are bothering you longer-standing problems that the holidays distracted you from, and you’re now facing again? If that is the case, and you have already tried everything you know to do to deal with the problem, consider getting professional help to resolve what’s bothering you. Sometimes getting away from problems for a bit, only to be upset again when we return, is exactly what we need to realize that there is something bigger that needs to be addressed. Embrace that fresh perspective and give yourself the best gift of all – the help you deserve to live your best life.

Fun and flavorful recipes from our kitchen to yours!
Best Ever
Pork Roast and Sauerkraut Juicy and packed with so much flavor! While pork roast and sauerkraut is a traditional New Year’s eve or Day recipe, I enjoy this recipe all year round. The aroma fills the house and brings back memories of a simpler time when Sunday dinner was still all the rage. Nowadays when I want the ultimate comfort food, this is my go to meal. Feel free to adjust the brown sugar depending on how much “bite” you want from the sauerkraut. If you make this recipe, drop a photo on our Facebook page. We would love to hear from you!
Instructions
Pork and sauerkraut. Ingredients
Preheat oven to 325F, place rack in the middle. Pat the pork dry and sprinkle the entire roast with salt, pepper and smoked paprika. Heat a large non-stick pan over medium heat and add in olive oil. Sear all sides until golden brown approx. 5-8 minutes per side.
• 4 pound pork loin roast boneless and at room temperature (don’t skip this step!) – this should take about 20-30 minutes from being in the fridge
• 2 pounds sauerkraut • 1 cup chopped Vidalia onion • 1 peeled apple, chopped • 1/4 to 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika • 1 cup water *optional • 2 Tbl olive oil
In a Dutch oven with a lid, place the sauerkraut over the bottom. Sprinkle over onions, apples and brown sugar. Place the seared pork roast on top of the sauerkraut. If you’ve drained your sauerkraut, add water. If you did not you do not need the water. You want at least a cup of liquid in the pot. Cover tightly with a lid and bake for about 2 hours or until a meat thermometer reads between 145F-150F. While it’s cooking check the pot to ensure that it’s not drying out. If needed, add more water. Remove from the oven once the thermometer reads 145F-150F. Carefully remove the roast from the pan and place on a cutting board covering loosely with foil. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes: Adding Apples: I add the apple to help curb the bitterness of the kraut plus it adds such an incredible depth of flavor to the kraut! It’s a must try in my book! If you like it more bitter.
Adding Brown Sugar Adding sugar is completely optional as it to how bitter/ sour you like your kraut. If your Kraut is really bitter, add the full amount of sugar. Start with a 1/4 cup if desired.
Prevent it from drying out You need to ensure that your pot has a tight seal. If it does not, add foil to cover the pot and then the lid. If you do not have a lid, ensure that the foil is fitted snugly.
