On November 23rd we will not only celebrate our heritage, but also espresso! National Espresso Day falls on the same day as Thanksgiving this year.

This thick, foamy caffeinated beverage is usually served with no milk. An espresso machine forces hot water through a layer of dense, tightly packed, very finely ground coffee at a high pressure. This force creates crema, the thick foam that coats the top. According to Popular Science, Italian immigrants originally brought espresso into the country, but it was really Starbucks that helped create a “need” for the drink. Smaller roasting houses now specialize in espresso and serve their own blends. But what is espresso exactly? It can be made with a blend of any type of roasted coffee bean, not just dark roast. The beans

are ground almost to the consistency of powdered sugar. When you force nearly boiling water through 24-27 grams of coffee the result is a thicker, concentrated drink with a layer of foam that most coffee drinkers call espresso. The more powdered the grind, the longer it takes to force the water through. You need more power, pressure and consistency than the average home espresso maker can produce in order to have a perfect cup of espresso, but who needs perfection these days? Have a cup of coffee with dessert on Thanksgiving Day and drink the tiny cup of espresso while shopping on Black Friday, but don’t drink it for the caffeine. There is more caffeine in an 8 ounce cup of regular coffee than the typical shot of espresso! And Happy National Espresso Day!

Walking into CJ Miller Vacuum Center Inc. in the Henning’s Shopping Center feels like walking into any vacuum store. But nothing could be further from the truth. Owners Clint and LeAnne Miller and staff have been helping consumers clean their homes for over 32 years! What started out as a necessity quickly grew into a lifelong passion. Carpenter by trade, Clint built his first home in Phoenix, Arizona, complete with

a central vacuum system by VACUFLO® . After meeting LeAnne during her spring break, the couple married and moved back to LeAnne’s native state of Pennsylvania. They bought their home in Souderton, and wanted to install a central vacuum. Clint quickly realized that he couldn’t find a central vacuum dealer anywhere local. So he turned to VACUFLO® , based out of Ohio, and became a dealer. Problem solved! “We worked the business from our basement for

four years”, says Clint. When the opportunity to move into a small store in Souderton came along, they took a leap of faith and moved out of the basement. After outgrowing the space in 1995, they bought a building along Main Street in Souderton. When a store became available in 2007 at their present location in the Henning’s Supermarket shopping center, they jumped at the chance. “By that time, we were repairing all types of vacuum cleaners, and selling portable models,” Clint says. Today, CJ Miller is blessed with over 9000 central vac clients, as well as over 11,000 portable vacuum cleaner clients! “Once you experience central vac, you never go back” Clint states. I chuckle and tell him that should be his next tag line. Along with central vac, the store carries a variety of quality portable vacuums available at all price points, as well as air purifiers and cleaning supplies. CJ Miller also stocks most bags and belts for portable vacuums. Need a carpet shampooer? ‘We rent those too”, says Clint. When not working the business together, Clint and LeAnne enjoy spending time with their four children, whom they adopted from Haiti. “The business helped me to be a stay at home mom for many years” says LeAnne. After her last child went off to college, LeAnne rejoined working at the business alongside her husband. “We love what we do. Helping customers is truly our passion. More than just a sale, it lets us match people with what vacuum will work best for them,” says Clint. “We keep the customers budget in mind and help them to find something that works on all levels.” And the passion shows. Clint credits their success to employees that give great attention to quality customer service and workmanship.
