Wow! Did you know that our joint plan was the first regional plan to be adopted in Montgomery County and also one of the first in Pennsylvania in the year of 2001. To bring together the communities of the Valley was and is a great thing. The communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elected officials and leaders worked together to create a plan to preserve our history, our culture and our natural assets that make us the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The communities involved in the effort were East Greenville, Green Lane, Pennsburg, and Red Hill boroughs, plus Marlborough and Upper Hanover townships under the guidance of the County. Their mission was to maintain the quality of life for their current and new residents by sharing information and striving for common ground during the times of growth and change. This plan shows our history and our goals/objectives. Their effort, dedication and a lot of man hours to gather all the

The Heileg Hoch Deutschland Haus by Clyde Hoch

Nestled in a corner of 4th and Seminary Street in Pennsburg lies a home.The official date for the home is 1750 but many feel it was built before that date. Based on that date the home is 268 years old at this time. It was built by the Heileg family, a family of German immigrants. The area was farmed by this family for over a century. I have a post card that states the home was used as a hospital during the Revolutionary War when owned by the Heileg family. This home was built before this was a country. The walls are solid local shale stone and vary in thickness. In the basement they are approximately two feet thick, in the attic the walls are about eight inches thick. At one time the basement floor was brick. There were four holes in the floor where water from a spring flowed through. These were used to store butter and milk.

Ancestors of the Heiligâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feel the home was built as a fort for neighbors to gather in case of trouble. He bases this on running water in the basement and the thick walls. Pennsburg was originally known as Heiligsville and was changed to Pennsburg in 1843. When the Englishspeaking people asked what country the German speaking people were from they said Deutschland (translated means Germany) so they became known as Pennsylvania Dutch. My great, great, great grandfather (Elias) purchased the home in 1869 and it has remained in the Hoch family for almost 150 years. Elias came from the Oley area and did the opposite of most at the time. Instead of heading west he came east. I was always told the story that he rode up on a horse and asked what they

Heilig translated from German means holy and Hoch translated means high, so combined they mean holy high. It is my wish the home will be turned into a museum someday. I put so much time and money in this home I think I could have built two or three homes. No matter how bad the storm though I feel safe and comfortable. Most storms go pretty much unnoticed. I often think of all the people who lived and died in this home. I wonder how many were buried in the grounds of the home. My grandfather William died in what is now my kitchen. He was a very quiet man and said very little. The home was split in two at the time and doors led to each side. My mother took him dinner every night. She told me one night he said, “Thank you so much for taking care of me and doing all you do for me.” She said, “It was so out of character for him she was surprised.” The next morning, he was dead.

When the Hochs rebuilt the firebox they had their family name set in the fire back with bas relief bricks. A side view from the front corner. Notice that the stone changes in color. The front of colonial houses were called the “Money Side” because the dwellers wanted the best materials to be seen by the arriving visitors so the most money was spent to put the best materials in front. This was a common German custom in Pennsylvania.

This shows how the best stone was used on the corner to give more strength and appeal to the house.

Ghost stories abound, more from my wife, daughter and grandkids than from me. I was born in this home in 1946 and have lived in it ever since. I had a couple of unexplainable events happen, but my wife, daughter and grandson have seen ghosts. From the description they sound Celebrating Community

Colcannon Have you ever had colcannon? A St. Patrick’s day favorite, colcannon is an Irish potato recipe, a mixture of creamy mashed potatoes and usually kale or cabbage. I have been making colcannon potatoes on St. Patrick’s day since I ﬁrst ran across the recipe one day when researching things to do with leftover cabbage from my Corned Beef and cabbage cooking spree. It is well documented amongst my friends and family that I am an absolute freak for potatoes. This one ﬁlls my heart with happiness (and a little bit of cholesterol too, I imagine, but, hey, who’s counting?) If you make this recipe, drop a photo on our Facebook page. IRISH MASHED POTATOES

In the following colcannon recipe, I mix the mashed potatoes in with chopped cooked cabbage, green onions, heavy cream, and lots of butter (also well known amongst the friends). To serve, make a depression in the middle of the mashed potatoes and put a GLOP (it’s a word) of butter in it. To eat it, dip a forkful of the potatoes in the melted butter. If ever there was a recipe to get one to eat one’s greens, this is it!

INGREDIENTS

• 4 russet potatoes or yukon golds (2 to 2 1/2 pounds), peeled and cut into large chunks • Salt • 5 to 6 Tbsp unsalted butter (with more butter for serving) • 3 lightly packed cups of chopped cabbage, kale, chard, or other leafy green ( I always use cabbage)

• 3 green onions (including the green onion greens), minced (about 1/2 cup) • 1 cup heavy cream • Dash of nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

1. Boil the potatoes: Put the potatoes in a medium pot and cover with cold water by at least an inch. Add 2 tablespoons of salt, and bring to a boil. Boil until the potatoes are fork tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain in a colander. 2. Cook the greens and the green onions with butter: Return the pot to the stove and set over medium-high heat. Melt the butter in the pot and once it's hot, add the greens. Cook the greens for 3-4 minutes, or until they are wilted and have given off some of their water. Add the green onions and cook 1 minute more. 3. Mash the potatoes with milk or cream and greens: Pour in the milk or cream, mix well, and add the potatoes. Reduce the heat to medium. Use a fork or potato masher and mash the potatoes, mixing them up with the greens. Add salt, grated nutmeg and pepper to taste and serve hot, with a glop of butter in the center.
