On Mental Health
Caregiver Depression, the Silent Health Crisis Over the last 5 years, the number of unpaid family members caring for a loved one increased to 53 million Americans. This amounts to 1 in every 5 Americans caring for someone; a spouse, a parent, a relative, or multiple family members. Over time, this role increases often leading to physical and emotional stress. Today more caregivers report their own health as “fair or poor.” Caregivers’ express feelings of sadness, isolation, and are at high risk of experiencing depression. This has led to what is known as “the silent health crisis.” October 10th is World Mental Health Day. It is a day to raise awareness of depression and mental health around the world and to mobilize support. At Family Caregivers Network we work with families to help identify signs of caregiver “burnout/ depression” and to provide needed help before their own health is compromised. Celebrating Community

Signs of caregiver depression are: Change in eating habits and sleep patterns. Feeling constantly tired. Loss of interest in other activities. Easily agitated. Early intervention helps lessen symptoms. At Family Caregivers Network we offer free Caregiver Support Groups where you can talk freely about the challenges and emotions of caregiving. Our support groups help you see that your situation is not intolerable. By attending a support group, you will find others who understand and are also struggling just like you, and receive professional advice on resources available.
