Something New By: Lisa Palmer – Owner, Marigold Staging & Design

This time of year always feels refreshing. I’m not sure if it’s the sunlight lasting longer, or the smell of fresh flowers beginning to bloom, but something about this season feels like a rebirth. Swinging that revitalizing concept into design, let’s talk about two of the top trends in interior design for 2018. Surprisingly both have to do with kitchens! The first is having a designated cooking or chopping station. This would be a separate area either connected to the countertop or a transportable butchers block to cut those onions, or spread that flour. The idea originated when more and more people found they didn’t want to share counter space with unsanitary food items like chicken. So, a separate table connected to the counter, and placed lower was born.

A second trend is moving your dining table to the kitchen! Kitchen islands are now being replaced with smaller kitchen tables. This fashion is catching on super-fast and is ideal for anyone with smaller kitchens, or who have kids doing homework. It definitely makes transporting dinner from stove to table much easier!

So for all those passionate cooks out there, head over to our blog to see what these new designs look like at www.marigoldstaging.com

Never Settle For Pain! Imagine being in the best shape of your life, working out, and feeling good about yourself. Then, out of nowhere, you begin having pain. You don’t remember hurting yourself, but you feel it now and it’s painful to perform simple tasks. So, what do you do next? Call your local physical therapist in Red Hill! Physical therapy is a conservative way to evaluate how the movement of your body causes pain. A great physical therapist will observe the whole body and study how it moves. The source of pain is not always the location in which it is felt. A physical therapist can work to find the source of the problem and establish a program of exercises and therapy to prevent re-injury. At Advanced Motion Rehabilitation (AMR), we are 100% committed to getting you better. Our therapist, Dr. Jenna Klenieski, PT, DPT works with every patient during private sessions to find the source of the pain. Pain can stay localized to where the root of the problem is or it can radiate to other areas. “Sometimes a

patient may come in with leg pain and they leave with back exercises. Other times they may have knee pain, and we talk about their flat feet the whole session,” says Dr Jenna, “My biggest advice is when you start having pain, that’s when you should start treatment. Don’t wait for the pain to become chronic because chronic pain is a lot harder to treat.” Every physical therapist is different and many have different backgrounds and clinical experiences. It is important to find one that works best with you. AMR treats patients of all ages from infants that have torticollis, to teenagers with sports related injuries to adults with overuse strains/sprains and post surgeries. “I love this community and I want to bring the best I can, that’s why I provide private sessions. It allows me to focus on the individual patient and develop a customized program to fix the problem,” adds Dr. Jenna. AMR is accepting new patients! It’s easy to get into therapy and start getting better. Why live with pain when you can Regain Your Life Again!!

Based on recent studies, over 50% of grocery items bought in chain-run; big box grocery stores contain preservatives and ingredients known to cause health defects. Some examples of the many ingredients that are deleterious to your health are Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). These preservatives are often found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. These common preservative have been known to affect the neurological system of the brain, alter behavior and have a potential to cause cancer. BHA and BHT are oxidants which form cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body. Much like Whole Foods, we believe in banning products that contain additives, hormones, or preservatives. Hop on Down The Bunny Trail Often celebrated as a time of rebirth and promise of good things to come, Easter has a richer tradition than the chocolate in your colorful basket. While the exact method for calculating why Easter Sunday falls around the same time is rather complicated it does always fall somewhere between March 21st and April 25th each year, ushering in the season of spring. Have you ever wondered how the Christian traditions of rejoicing the resurrection of Jesus merged with the celebration of springtime? The Christian tradition of Easter hails from the belief Jesus was crucified during the Jewish Passover festival, which is why Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon (known as the “Paschal [Passover] Full Moon”). According to the New Testament, Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday and was resurrected three days later, marking the 40-day period of Lent1. This resurrection and promise of starting anew is what seems to be the factor that has aided the inclusion of the next most well-known Easter symbol, the egg. Possibly linked to pagan traditions of spring festivals, the egg is used in association with spring as a symbol of new life. “Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century, according to some sources. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.” Similarly, the origins of another well-know Easter face, that of the Easter Bunny, are unclear, but likely represent a symbol of fertility and new life.2 Last but not least, it’s no surprise that no matter what tradition is being celebrated, yummy food always has a place in our hearts (and stomachs). With shapes ranging everywhere from eggs to bunnies, to jellied beans, candy is a big part of the modern tradition that many families excitedly anticipate. According to a 2017 survey , the most popular Easter treats that year were: 1.Reese's Mini Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs 2.Chocolate bunnies 3.Jelly beans 4.Hershey's Eggs 5.Peeps Although Easter is now over, the spirit can stay in your heart all year…which is much longer than any of those chocolate bunnies will last in their basket. Female Adult Mountain Cur Whippet Breah is a sweet little mix breed girl that was abandoned at local kennel. Her owner never came back for her. She is about 3 years old and 22 pounds. Breah is housebroken and loves to be with people. Breah is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped and heartworm and Lyme negative. She knows how to sit and give paw. She will prefer to be an only dog or would probably be ok with another laid back dog that won't want to play with her, but we would have to do a meet and greet to see how it goes if you have another dog. Her adoption fee is $300.00. If you are interested in adopting Breah, please visit our website www.LHARinc.org go to Adopt and complete the dog adoption application

From Decadent Desserts to Heavenly Hard Apple Cider

Tasty treats and succulent fruit surround you as you enter the cozy country store, “Pappy’s Orchard and Bakery.” Located at 2576 Cassel Road in Coopersburg, this 3rd generation family-owned business shows just as much care for their customers as they do for their own family. From sweets just like mom used to make to comfort food crafted with TLC, Lisa Urffer and her husband love what they do and what they provide to the community they call home. Owned by her husband’s family for years, Urffer explains, “It used to be a dairy farm. My father-in-law used the fruit trees to pay for the taxes and it grew from there. We took over in the early 2000’s. We started to take some of the things from the orchard and put them into the bakery.” The bakery is where Lisa uses her culinary creativities to create delicious food for dinner and dessert.“It started with our Jewish apple cake and our chiffon pie and then it grew from there and we were constantly adding things. I have a fascination for food, so I like to make things from different cultures. We have things from Pennsylvania Dutch, things that are Hungarian, things that are Eastern European…. I like the stories behind things as well.” Some of the baked goods you’ll find made with fruit from right there on the farm includes apple pies (available in both traditional and no sugar added forms) and apple dumplings. All of the items are made with simple, natural ingredients and lots of love.

Comfort favorites like rich sausage pies and creamy macaroni and cheese have been added in recent years to the list of delicious offerings that are perfect for dinner on a busy night. Urffer’s favorites are the chicken and biscuits and chicken and wild rice soup. After talking to anyone working at the store you’re sure to find a happy memory associated with one of the foods on the shelves. “Food creates memories. I like that the theory behind the savories came about because people in our society don’t eat as a family and I thought if I made a dish that you could make, real comfort food, perhaps you can spend time with your family enjoying it together. That family connection is very important.”

If you’ve been in the area of Pappy’s you’ve probably noticed a classy guy with a very long neck who likes to hang around enjoying the sunshine. Griffin the giraffe [pictured] is drinking a glass of wine, loving life, and no doubt thinking about if he should have a chocolate chip scone or a piece of cheesecake tonight as his dessert. He has been around the farm at several locations. “You just never know where he’s going to show up!” laughs Urffer. This staple of Pappy’s came about on a Sunday when the Urffer family has their “Family Fun,” where each member of the family chooses their idea of fun for the day and the rest of the family joins in. One day they decided they would have fun building Griffin together as a family and turned him into their mascot. “He’s pretty good as far as Urffer’s passion for food goes beyond sweets as she giraffes goes.” says Urffer. You may even see Griffin keeps the refrigeration section of the store stocked while you’re driving down the Turnpike as Pappy’s with savory foods for your family to enjoy. owns some trees nearby to it. Don’t forget to wave!

With new items being added constantly and old favorites always on hand, Pappy’s Orchard and Bakery will be keeping the community happy and full for years to come. Not only can you add a healthy boost to your shopping bag with fresh apples, breads and milk available in the store, but also keep an eye out for Snicklefritz Hard Cider, their son David’s business, which is sold there as well and made from their own fresh fruit. Visit them today and check out their website, www.pappysorchard.com for a full list of their savory food, dessert treats and breads with lots Pappy’s has been a staple in the community for many of photos to get your mouth watering. years and now, adding the bakery, the Urffer family hopes to have the type of legacy where people can say, “This is where my parents went, this is where my grandparents went.”“We just think that being part of our community is very important. We enjoy our events that we’re able to give back like our Peach Festival and our Open Gate. This year we’ll be doing a dinner in our orchard as well. As we look to the future we want to be a solid part of the community.” Community will always be a strong part of the Pappy’s philosophy as they also source many of their ingredients, such as eggs and milk locally.“We try to keep as much money in the area as possible.” Pappy’s Orchard and Bakery also gladly accepts orders for large parties and events so that every one of your friends will have a yummy bite of something freshly baked to enjoy. “We can make it fun, we can make it interesting, if someone is looking for something we can make different things,” says Urffer. “We’re a small enough bakery that we can make one or two things, but we’re a big enough bakery that we can make cakes or cupcakes or cookies for weddings or special events.” Creating something new is something Urffer is always up for trying as she tells the story of how she once wanted to make a pretty, fancy cookie and took pieces from three different cookies and put them all together. This created their “Mounds of Joy,” which is a combination of coconut cookie with coconut cream, dipped halfway in chocolate.

Love Upper Perk is a movement to care about our community. Love Upper Perk is based out of the Upper Perk Community Life Center. The goal is to create a site that hosts and publishes everything that is awesome in the Upper Perk Valley. Love Upper Perk works closely with boroughs, churches, non-profits, & businesses to accomplish getting the word out about what is going on in the Valley. Check us out at www.LoveUpperPerk.org.

In the mid-1950s, research was showing Americans spending less on books and more on modern leisure activities like radios and televisions. Growing concern that Americans were losing their luster for the excitement, discovery, and knowledge contained in the written word, the American Library Association and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee. In 1958 their ideas to reignite a spark for reading came to fruition with the 1st National Library Week. This year from April 8-14 you can take part in National Library Week by visiting your local library and celebrating the contributions of both libraries and librarians. Visiting your local library and picking up a few old favorites or new discoveries helps your library be able to continue to provide a service to the community. Introducing your kids to the books and services a library has to offer can also help foster responsibility by giving them their own library card and books to care for. Borrowing books, magazines, and DVDs from a library is also a cost-saving alternative to buying or renting elsewhere. This year the National Library Week theme is “Libraries Lead.” What does that mean to you? Perhaps finding a book that leads you to make a change in your life? Or leading you to join a book club or other local activity your library is offering? The Upper Perkiomen Valley Library, located at 350 Main Street in Red Hill, offers a book club where you can find a great new read and meet others with similar interests. This month the book being offered is Lab Girl, written by Hope Jahren. Let your local library lead you to doing something good for yourself and your family. After all there is nothing quite like sitting down with a good book. Visit The Upper Perkiomen Valley Library’s website at: www.upvlibrary.org to learn more about their upcoming events and adult, teen, and youth activities. Also check out www.ala.org to discover more about the National Library Association and find out what you can do to get involved at your local library this National Library Week and all year long. Don’t forget to thank your local librarian when you check out your new book! How have you been celebrating National Library Week? Let us know on the Love Upper Perk Facebook page!

Understanding Car Trouble

by Noelle Kingsbauer

At Matt’s Auto Repair Sales and Service in East Greenville owner Matt Peters takes a different approach to the business of working on cars than the typical garage, “Sometimes mechanics intentionally make things not understandable. I would rather somebody understand what’s going on and have an educated customer for sure,” says Peters. “That’s part of the philosophy of my business here. You’re in a position to help people.” For six years Matt’s has been demonstrating that philosophy by servicing cars and repairing equipment in the Upper Perkiomen Valley as well as at their prior Hilltown location. Car repair has been talent of Peters’ since an early age. “I guess I’ve always been into it,” he says. “I saw my dad working on stuff as a kid and started doing it myself.” After learning much of the ins and outs he began working in the industry. “I was in the auto parts business for a long time and just started being a mechanic at a shop. When I started out at my old shop I started doing just automatic transmissions. I kind of specialized in that and then that industry kind of changed and then fizzled out. We still get transmissions, but it’s really inspections that gets people coming in.” Now that inspection season is upon many of us Matt’s is offering free inspection with emissions to get your car ready for your summer road trips.

whether it be appliance repair, car repair or home repair, it’s never straightforward and can always turn into something more than you anticipated. The more my customers know the better.” At Matt’s you don’t have to feel in the dark about what’s happening under the hood. The service technicians are happy to answer questions and they also encourage customers to watch reputable YouTube videos to see the process of what has been repaired on your car or even to learn basic jobs yourself. If you’ve done any work on your car by yourself, Matt’s is available to answer questions and check on your car when you’re done to make sure everything is running smoothly and safely. Not only does Matt’s service vehicles, but they also offer repair work on a variety of equipment. “Me and my business partner tinker with a lot of mechanical things” says Peters. “We fix pretty much anything.” Give them a call at (267) 923-5291 for more information and pricing. Matt’s Auto Repair Sales and Service is conveniently located conveniently near Wal-Mart at 636 Gravel Pike in East Greenville. While you wait on your car you can relax in their lounge area where free WiFi is available.

A common concern many people have when taking their car in for repair is that the customer might be the one taken for a ride. At Matt’s the philosophy is all about providing the necessary service while helping people understand what’s going on with their car. “I would be one to encourage people to get more involved with their own car,” explains Peters. “When people are familiar with their own stuff it’s easier to explain when there is a problem with their car that we’re trying to fix. In any service industry, Relax in Matts Auto Repair Lounge while you wait

Now that the snow is [hopefully] gone for good, it’s that time of year to make sure your car is in tip top shape and all set for taking you on your upcoming adventures. What you don’t see on your car is even more important to take care of than what you do, so a wash and wax aren’t the only steps you should be taking this spring to make your car road ready. Here are a couple of helpful tips to make your car run smoother and more efficient this season. 1. Rust Regrets- “In this day and age we have the problem of the road salt,” says Matt Peters of Matt’s Auto Repair Sales and Service. Rust could not only cause damage to the bodywork of your car, but potentially to the underside as well, which can cause oil and fuel leaks. “That’s one of the most important things we see to save money in the long run is rust prevention,” explains Peters. 2. Keep it Fresh- Air filters and cabin filters both prevent harmful debris, dirt and pollutants from entering your engine (air filter) and car interior (cabin filter). A cabin filter can also help your interior smell fresh as a spring daisy. 3. Potholes Woes- No surprise to drivers, potholes are a winter woe that cause issues into the springtime. “Alignments after the winter I would be an advocate for because if you’re not paying attention you can wear your tires out and cost more in the long run,” advises Peters. “Definitely alignments are a spring recommendation.” 4. Swipe Right- After the havoc of snow, ice, and debris it’s not a bad idea to replace your windshield wipers if you’re noticing them start to wear and under perform. 5. Tire Time- With all of the wear and tear from your daily drive and those lovely potholes it’s important to check air pressure and tire tread monthly. Check your owner’s manual to find out the optimal tire pressure for your make and model.
