Real Estate Update

By Nathan Hitchcock What is my prediction for 2014? Get As I write this, try pundits agree with my prediction, howready for the return of a hot seller’s market. 2013 is drawing to a ever; most seem to be predicting a flat or I don’t expect it will reach the fevered close, and the real estate moderate market for 2014. So why am I so pitch we experienced during the first market continues to sit optimistic? Here are the top three indicators several months of 2013, thanks primarily in a relatively neutral that have me wearing rose-colored glasses: to increased inventory from sellers who are buyer-seller state in this 1. struction industry is a key indicator in the strength of an area’s economy. Development occurs when money is plentiful and markets are expanding, which is clearly the case in the Bay Area right now. All this construction spending puts money on the streets in the form of jobs. And when people have jobs, people buy homes. 3. Unemployment in the Bay Area is significantly lower than the rest of the state and nation--nearly 50% less in some areas. For that we can thank our booming tech industry, where unemployment is actually negative. Tech companies can’t seem to hire people fast enough, and the result is a steady influx of talent moving to the area to fill the need. And those people need homes. So call me overly optimistic if you must, but everything I’m seeing as a “soldier on the ground” is pointing to a robust real estate market in 2014. I, for one, can’t wait to see how well my crystal ball is working. Nathan Hitchcock can be reached at nathan@hitchcockrealty.com or (925) 8251100.

thousands of yards a practice, certain muscles will over-develop and others will weaken. When this happens, injuries occur. And the injuries from sports tend to be the same recurring injury. However, combating this is relatively easy, it just takes time. We copied a hierarchy philosophy from Mike Boyle, a well-respected strength coach in Boston. When training athletes, the order of importance is as follows: 1) keep them safe in the gym, 2) keep them safe on the field (or in the pool), and 3) make them a better athlete. This shifts the focus away from pushing heavy weight around to analyzing movements in search of faulty motion patterns and then correcting them. We have had a great deal of success just by creating balance. We’ve helped some athletes develop enough strength to squat over 400 pounds and

deadlift over 500 pounds, but some of our biggest success stories have come from athletes who came to us in pain, unable to participate in their sport, to swimming and setting new personal records, just because we were able to get their body balanced again. Since using this approach, our athletes haven’t had any injuries other than the inevitable ones caused from collisions on the field (knock on wood.) When looking for a strength coach or a training program for an athlete, find one that emphasizes bringing both balance and strength to the athlete, not just the latter. This has proven to be an approach that works best and is used by some of the greatest strength coaches in the world. Kevin Arndt is an athletic trainer at Forma Gym in Walnut Creek. Local Cheerleaders Perform In London Carly Bergerhouse and Nina Cretan, seniors at Alhambra High School, were among 300 exceptional high school cheerleaders selected from across the nation to perform in the world famous London New Year’s Day Parade. They are two of only three who were chosen from Contra Costa County, and they were the first ever to participate from AHS since this tradition began in 1987. Both have been dedicated and accomplished cheerleaders since their freshman year at AHS. They were invited to perform in the parade after each was chosen as an “All American Cheerleader” at one of the summer camps hosted by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), National Cheerlead-

ers Association (NCA), and United Spirit Association (USA). All Americans are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading skills at camps across the country. Only the top 5% of cheerleaders who attend varsity summer camps earn the chance to march in the holiday spectacular. “This is the 26th year we’ve been able to bring talented cheerleaders to London, where they can showcase their skills to a very enthusiastic international audience,” says Mike Fultz, the varsity international event coordinator. Jack’s Restaurant seamlessly transitions as a place where customers can go for a dressed-up meal, a burger and beer before or after the movie, a business meeting or a celebration for one of life’s milestones. Perhaps because they are also open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offer indoor and outdoor dining and make you to feel comfortable anytime you walk in, they won the Readers’ Local Favorites Overall Best Restaurant. Since opening in 2010, Jack’s has grown to become the destination for happy hour and wine, winning them the award for Best Wine Selection and Best

Happy Hour. Their wine list is extensive, offering a selection of over 50 red and more than 25 white wines by the bottle. Half bottles and a selection of 25 wines by the glass are also available. Jack’s hosts happy hour Monday – Friday, from 3:30 - 6:30pm, and they offer four beers on tap, cocktails and appetizers, with all items under $6. The bar includes high top seating and accommodates 50 people. Many guests come in for their signature drinks: Pomegranate in a Pear Tree made with Grey Goose La Poire and Ivan’s Margarita made with Cazadores Reposado. Adventurous folks order the classic Greek drink Ouzo, making Jack’s a finalist in the Best Signature Drink category. The spacious bar side area (separate from the dining side) includes four giant HD TVs that affix the walls and keep guests upto-date on the latest sports scores, making Jack’s a finalist in the Best Sports Bar category.

A BAY AREA FAVORITE SINCE 1946

Haute Stuff – Finalist 521 Main St, Martinez, (925) 229-0521 Lemongrass – Finalist The owners of Lemongrass Bistro envisioned a venue where people could come together to enjoy “contemporary” Southeast Asian dishes prepared by their mother Boun Pheng in an upbeat, cozy “bistro” setting. With that in mind, the restaurant was redesigned and remodeled with the help of student designers from the Academy of Art in San Francisco to make this vision a realty. Lemongrass Bistro has become a recognized restaurant in the community. Lunch: M-F 11am3pm & Sat 12-2:30pm. Dinner: M 5-8:30pm & T-Sat 5-9pm. 501 Main St., Martinez, (925) 387-0388, www.lemongrass-bistro.com. Wence’s Restaurant – Finalist This new, family-run restaurant offers a variety of freshly prepared entrees for all taste buds, including mussels and sea bass, white truffle mac and cheese, specialty burgers, and filet mignon! The owners believe even the smallest detail matters to ensure every customer is pleased and eager to return. Brunch Sat & Sun, lunch and dinner every day. Thanks for voting us Best BBQ and Best Sandwiches!

The relaxed atmosphere attracts families, and the wide-ranging menu has some Mediterranean influences, which are popular enough to vote Jack’s a finalist in the Greek/Mediterranean Restaurant. Kids love Jack’s for their chicken tenders and selection of mac-n-cheese -- six choices to be exact, including bacon or hot dog mac, winning them Best Family Restaurant. Jack’s is a winner in the Best Lunch and a finalist in the Best Breakfast categories too. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, there is plenty to choose from on the menu to impress clients or your friends from out of town. Delectable eggs benedict, a selection of omelets, twelve salad choices, ten sandwiches offerings and half a dozen pasta dishes keep fans of Jack’s returning for more. There are plenty of tables for two, and couples often come for date night to enjoy a meal, either outside on the patio (heated in the winter) with white lights romantically strung overhead or inside at a comfortable table along the window. Special occasions are celebrated with a bottle of PerrieJouet Champagne and a chocolate tuxedo cake for dessert. It’s not surprising that Jack’s is also a winner in the Best Date Dining category. 60 Crescent Dr., Pleasant Hill, (925) 849-6195, www.jacksrestaurants.com.

Is Your Car Back to College Ready? By Hagin’s Automotive It’s easy for college students to remember to get new clothes, school supplies and dorm and apartment furniture, but what about preparing the car that’s going to haul all that stuff? The Car Care Council, an automotive consumer education group, reminds students and their parents to not overlook Vehicle Maintenance 101. The Car Care Council recommends performing a regular preventative maintenance inspection before hitting the road. A regular preventative maintenance inspection includes inspecting the following items: all exterior lights, wiper blades, horn operation, all fluid levels and conditions, air fil-

ter, fluid leaks, drive belts, suspension, chassis, exhaust, brakes and battery. The Car Care Council also recommends that college-bound students have important telephone numbers in their cell phone or glove box in case of a breakdown or emergency. Vehicles should have a roadside emergency kit that includes flares, a first aid kit, a tirechanging jack, a tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, bottles of water and a blanket. See you soon, Hagin’s Automotive For more information, please call us at (925) 228-5115 or send us an email at haginsauto@haginsauto.com.

Garden Club Gives Back

Donating cheerful houseplants to homebound hospice patients is an annual holiday tradition of the Pleasant Hill Garden Study Club. Members brought plants to the club’s December meeting and delivered them the next morning. This year, 30 plants were given to Hospice of the East Bay and another 30 went to Sutter Care at Home. Delivering the plants (pictured left to right) were PHGSC members Gail Sutherland and Carol Nelsen. Member Jan Egan prepared identification labels. Jory’s Flowers in Concord generously donated label stakes. Submitted by Eileen Housfeld.
