Moving You On To Better Things

It’s official. The Community Focus Readers’ Local Favorites contest is now a tradition! We are excited to present the results of our 3rd annual Readers’ Local Favorites poll. During the months of September and October, 2015, a record number of loyal readers took advantage of the opportunity to vote online for their favorites in 64 categories, from the homepage of our website, www. ourcommunityfocus.com, where results can also be found. But hang on to this issue! You’ll want to refer to it again and again to find the best places to eat, get a drink or take a hike; see where locals go for skin care, a gorgeous new hair cut and color, or a relaxing massage. Where will you buy your next set of tires? How will you start (or re-start) your road to health and fitness in 2016? How do you decide who to trust with your financial, estate

or tax services? Take the advice of your friends and neighbors who voted for their favorite spots for happy hour, yoga classes and Thai food. Congratulate these businesses! They’ve worked hard to earn the accolades. And the next time you need to eat, shop, take care of your finances, take care of your health, a loved one’s health, or just relax, look to the Readers’ Local Favorites issue to help you decide where to go or who to see! You will certainly spot some of your old favorites, and hopefully, find some gems you didn’t know existed. The publishers would like to give a shout out to our readers for your enthusiastic response to our third “Favorites” issue, and congratulations to all the winners and finalists for being recognized for your exceptional products and services. The Local Favorites section begins on page 12.

Resolutions

Improving Your Home in 2016 Let’s talk return on investment (ROI). At some point, everyone has thought about selling their home, and for many this day is near, but that thought is usually followed by a laundry list of things to fix or update before daring to show it to the whole town. With a few simple tips, we can make a New Year’s resolution to tackle home improvement with updates that really pay off. The Front Door Sounds simple right? Front doors can be super dated or give off a bad first impression, even before potential buyers walk in. So, this is our number one best ROI. Paint We all know it. We’ve all heard it. Paint can transform a room and a house. It can even update furniture if you’re feeling crafty. The hardest part is picking the color because there are so many options, but paint can take your look from drab to fab in seconds for pennies a square foot. Light Fixtures Unless you have some cool, vintage, mid-century modern light fixture or a priceless antique chandelier, lighting from the 1950s will make your home look like the 1950s and in need of an update. Lighting makes a huge impact, not only from the fixture itself, but also from the light is casts. Make sure your rooms are light and bright. Brass Some homeowners love the look of brass. Although it’s a matter of personal preference, the majority of buyers will tell you that brass looks out of date. So a few new doorknobs, faucets, and towel rods in a pewter or oil-rubbed bronze make a big difference. Countertops We all know kitchens and bathrooms sell houses, but these rooms can break the bank. We have found that a few kitchen updates go a long way without remodeling the whole room. Buyers are always looking for updated countertops. Granite isn’t the only option anymore; glass, marble, quartz, and even stained concrete provide a more modern look.

Ken Marson and Cristina Candelori, J. Rockcliff Realtors

Appliances Your home doesn’t need a six-burner luxury gas stove for $4,000. But for around $1,000, you can get a few stainless steel appliances for the kitchen that have a big impact. Flooring Flooring stores are limitless these days. The technology in flooring is so good it can be hard to tell the difference between laminate and hardwood. Most buyers are going to prefer a laminate floor to carpet, at least in the living areas of the home. Laminate floors are not hard to install, and we have done them ourselves. It is a DIY project that can be done in a weekend, we promise. We also provide free, in-home consultations to help homeowners who are feeling overwhelmed with getting their home ready for market and need some direction. Call or email us to schedule a time to meet. We are your Pleasant Hill neighbors and want you to love where you live. Open Enrollment January Insurance Reminders BY COLLEEN CALLAHAN After such a deadline-heavy fall insurance season, it is difficult to comprehend it is time to start looking at the year ahead. We pride ourselves on our service, but during October, November, and December, it became increasingly more difficult to return calls in a timely manner. I hope that fall 2016 will be a little easier! Here are two new year reminders related to insurance: On January first, your health insurance deductible and out of pocket maximums reset. If you anticipate changes in income and you have Covered California, you must submit an update. To report changes, call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 or log in to your online account at CoveredCA.com. There is still time to apply for individual health insurance for 2016. Remember, there are tax penalties for not having coverage. • January 15, 2016: Last day to enroll in or change plans for new coverage to

start February 1, 2016. • January 31, 2016: 2016 Open Enrollment ends. Enrollments or changes between January 16 and January 31 take effect March 1, 2016. I know one Medicare supplement company has announced rate changes for March 2016. Please call me if you would like to review your plan. During your birthday month, you can be guaranteed the opportunity to obtain other, potentially less expensive coverage. Give yourself a present this year and review your Medicare Supplement! Finally, a reader asked how long you need to keep records. With regard to tax records, that is a good question for your CPA. As for medical records, health insurance applications no longer ask medical questions, but life and long-term care insurance applications ask for current and recent health issues as well as health-related issues from the past five or ten years. Normally, the physician provides copies when requested by the insurance company. Colleen Callahan Insurance Services is located in Pleasant Hill. Estate Planning New Year Estate Plan Checkup BY DANIEL DuREE Happy 2016! As another year unfolds before us we both reflect on where we have been and look forward to where this winding patch is taking us. If you are anything like me, there are a few things you resolve to accomplish in the coming year that you just didn’t quite get around to in 2015. For many people, estate planning is one of the items that lurks on the periphery of the subconscious “to do” list that we all harbor. While it may seem daunting, the estate planning process is straight forward and once completed, can be checked off that list to make room for other more exciting activities, such as cleaning out the rafters in the garage. To make it easier on you, I compiled a list of estate planning issues to check on (and check off) in the new year. 1. Do you have a revocable trust? ( and is it up to date?) A revocable living trust is crucial to avoiding the legal procedure equivalent of water boarding that is the California probate process. Make sure that all of your assets are currently held in the name of the trust. 2. Do you have a will nominating guardians for minor children? It is vitally important to ensure that your children are raised by people (or a person) you choose. 3. Is your advance healthcare directive current?

In my opinion, a properly executed advance healthcare directive is even more important that a trust. Put your health and personal care wishes in a valid legal document to ensure that they are carried out. 4. Did you create a durable power of attorney for financial management? More than 75% of people that pass away do not have legal capacity to make decisions at the time of their death. Make sure to appoint an agent to make financial, tax, and benefit decisions on your behalf. 5. Are your beneficiary designation forms current? Retirement accounts, pensions, life insurance policies, and annuities are passed to others through a beneficiary designation form. Make sure that they reflect your current wishes. It is possible to designate a trust as a beneficiary so that the assets will be distributed according to the trust distribution scheme. Going through this five point checklist will ensure that your assets are properly protected and that your wishes are carried out should anything happen to you. If you need assistance, give me a call. I am happy to help. In a couple of short meetings uncertainty can be traded for peace of mind. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 2016 from the Law Offices of Daniel L. DuRee. Daniel L. DuRee is a third generation resident of Contra Costa County and a licensed attorney practicing in Walnut Creek. He can be reached at (925) 2101400 or visit www.DuReeLaw.com.

Shutout at CP The Falcons dominated the Northgate Broncos Wednesday night, December 16, under the new lights installed at College Park High School. Junior Justin Bedig scored his first hat trick of the season, with the first of his three goals scored as a result of a penalty kick drawn by senior Ryan Jones. Coach Sandy Jones told Community Focus, “We have a very young team, only three seniors. The team is starting to trust and gain confidence. DVC Men’s Basketball BY MATT SCHWAB The Vikings (7-4) continued their positive run with a 2-1 record in the San Jose City Tournament, including wins over College of Alameda, 84-63, and Ohlone, 70-60, and a loss to Merritt, 55-44. “Overall, the guys really battled,” said Assistant Coach Derrick Jones, who filled in admirably for Head Coach Steve Coccimiglio over the past six games. “Over the last two weeks, they’ve been sharing the ball as a group offensively, doing a good job of playing together, and just battling and staying focused.” The Vikings faced Merritt without their two starting guards due to injuries, Leon Williams V (knee) and Remy Dillard (shoulder). A former star at Van-

den High in Fairfield, Williams has battled back gallantly after suffering a torn ACL on each leg in back-to-back seasons. The Vikings are hoping Williams’ apparent setback was more a reflection of his heavy workload, not the result of another injury. He had seven points, five rebounds, and four assists against the Renegades. The Vikings took two weeks off over the holidays to heal up before beginning play in the Big 8 at San Joaquin Delta on January 5. The girls won four games while playing through driving rain and massive wind gusts, as well as under a couple of rainbows. The deciding goal came on Sunday in the second overtime period against the MVLA Thunder, which landed Infinity the championship.

Carondelet Varsity Soccer At the Tri-Valley Classic soccer game on December 18, the Cougars took on the defending NCS Division I Champion Liberty High School and outplayed them with a final score of 1-0, with the winning goal made by senior Brooke Cilley in the second half. Under the direction of Varsity Coach Amy Apodaca, Carondelet is currently undefeated, with an overall 7-0 record with 2-0 in league play. To date, Carondelet varsity soccer is ranked #5 according to the Soccer Institute at Montverde Academy’s National Fab 50 girl’s high school soccer team rankings, and #1 in the state. Max Preps has the varsity team ranked as #4 in the state. The Cougars head to Mill Valley and face Tamalpais High School on January 4 and Livermore High School at home on January 5.

Robotic Surgery Speeding Patient Recovery BY STEPHEN TAYLOR, MD Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, second only to lung cancer. There are no symptoms of prostate cancer in its earliest, most curable stages. The combination of the digital rectal exam and the prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening tests have allowed for the earlier detection of prostate cancer. Approximately 90% of prostate cancer can now be discovered at potentially curable stages. Not every patient with prostate cancer needs to be treated. There are several types of prostate cancer, and many men with

the slowest growing type do not require immediate treatment. However, there are some kinds that are more aggressive, can be life threatening, and do require treatment to prevent spread before it becomes incurable. Men with this type are faced with a decision on which treatment to choose. They have a choice between one of the various forms of radiation therapy or surgery to remove the prostate gland in its entirety. There have been significant advances in both radiation treatments and surgery. Calypso beacons can be placed inside the prostate to help localize the exact boundaries of the prostate during radiation treatments, which help prevent radiation damage to surrounding organs, such as the bladder and rectum. This significantly reduces the risk of side effects.

Robotic surgery has revolutionized the surgical treatment of prostate cancer. It is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the cancerous prostate gland in its entirety and local lymph nodes when indicated. It usually involves one night in the hospital, minimal pain, minimal scaring, and rapid return to normal function. There is still a small risk of incontinence (2%) and risk of impotence. I found a nodule in the prostate of a 56 year-old patient on rectal examination. His PSA was normal at 2.1. He had a prostate biopsy that showed he had prostate cancer, the slow growing type (Gleason 6). He was normally sexually active and a long distance runner. Because of his young age, he decided to have surgery rather than active surveillance. He had a robotic radical prostatectomy where the nerves for erection were preserved. The final pathology

revealed a more aggressive type (Gleason 7), but no spread outside the prostate, and all lymph nodes were free of disease. He is now 1 year after surgery, fully continent (no leakage), potent, and able to engage in sexual activity. His PSA level is undetectable. He just finished a 100-mile run, where he raised $5,000 for prostate cancer research! Advances in treatment of prostate cancer, such as robotic surgery and new forms of targeted radiation therapy, allow men quick recovery, minimal risk of permanent side effects, and a return to normal life, with high chances of being cured of their disease. Dr. Stephen Taylor is a urologist with Pacific Urology. He specializes in robotic urologic surgeries and prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers. He treats patients in Walnut Creek and Concord and can be reached at 925-937-7740 or by visiting www.PacificUrology.com.

HPV Vaccine

Why All Teenagers Need to Get It BY GIGI CHEN,MD January is cervical cancer awareness month, so what does that have to do with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine? First of all, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the US today and can cause health problems that affect the genital areas, mouth, and throat of men and women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate there are approximately 9,300 men and 17,500 women affected each year by cancers caused by HPV. Diagnoses we most often see are oropharyngeal cancer in men and cervical cancer in women. The HPV vaccine helps protect boys and girls from developing the HPV infection. Specifically, the vaccine helps protect boys from developing genital warts (and HPV related cancers) and protects girls from developing cervical cancer and genital warts. The CDC recommends that the HPV vaccine (a series of 3 shots) be given to chil-

dren between the ages of 11 and 12 years of age, well before becoming sexually active. This recommendation is endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. If children are not vaccinated when younger, “catch up vaccines” are recommended for males through age 21 and females through age 26. It is also important to point out that the vaccine does not protect against all types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer, therefore, girls still need to have regular Pap tests. Most people do not know they are infected with HPV because they never develop symptoms or health problems. Others learn they have HPV when they develop genital warts or more serious problems. Medical research and development continue to give us effective advances in disease prevention that help us all. Dr. Chen is a medical oncologist with Diablo Valley Oncology. Your Abundant Life The Art of Doing Nothing BY THERESA NIDETZ A new year has just begun and, already, we are filling our calendars and datebooks with things to do, people to see, and places to go. We are adding new resolutions on top of the ones we didn’t achieve before midnight struck on December 31 last year. In our culture of multi-tasking, being busy is almost an expected norm, and having some downtime is a luxury few of us have the opportunity to experience. Some of us pride ourselves on leading such a “crazy busy” life that we don’t have time to just be. Downtime, chilling, vegging-out… the Italians have an expression for it. They call it far niente (to do nothing), and it is as much a part of life as breathing, eating and sleeping. Why is that so important, you might ask? Well, think of all the times when a bright idea, an answer to a nagging question, or a solution to a perplexing problem came to you while you were

in the shower, taking a walk, or just “tuning out” and staring into space. That is far niente working its magic! When I was growing up, my mother, who was one of those “super moms” before the term existed, made sure my siblings and I were kept busy with school, homework, and chores. Whenever we had nothing to do, she would come up with busy work or suggest we go somewhere or do something. This was not unlike the way we present-day parents fill up our children’s schedules with all kinds of extra-curricular activities to keep them occupied. When I became an adult, life made sure I was kept busy with a full-time job, marriage, and children. Unscheduled time was scarce. But lately, I have come to appreciate life at a slower pace, and I am learning to allow myself time for the things I enjoy doing or to just do nothing at all. Practicing the art of doing nothing

may be difficult at first, especially if you are wired to keep your mind and body going twenty-four/seven. It takes courage and determination to make time for doing nothing. And your friends and family may think there’s something wrong with you for wanting to take a time-out. But once they see how much happier, calmer, and more creative and productive you’ve become from this practice, they’ll understand. If you are like me and cannot sit still long enough to meditate, there are many ways to do nothing, such as taking a walk in nature, listening to your favorite music

without any distractions, enjoying a warm relaxing bath, or taking a nap. The possibilities are endless! So, the next time you are presented with the gift of unscheduled time and feel tempted to pick up that cell phone, tablet, laptop, or some other device of “busy-ness,” close your eyes, take three deep cleansing breaths, and allow yourself to do nothing at all! Hillcrest Veterinary Winning Hospital Team Looks Ahead

Fulfilling a dream, Zachary Anderson, DVM, has assumed ownership of Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital (HVH) in Pleasant Hill. HVH has served the community since 1976 and under Dr. Joe Thibedeau and Jane Thibedeau since 1989. HVH has been certified as an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) site since 1994.
