LGTBQ+ ALLIANCE FUND

2021 IMPACT REPORT

A NOTE FROM OUR FUND LEADERS

WHO WE ARE The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer (LGBTQ+) Alliance Fund connects donors with projects that benefit the LGBTQ+ community in Southern Arizona through annual competitive grant rounds. The Fund provides donors with a way to channel their charitable investments into efforts that are likely to affect the issues they’re most concerned with. The LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund was created in 1999 by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona with support from the National Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Partnership. The Fund addresses the chronic underfunding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender programs through philanthropy and endowment building. To date, the Fund has awarded 208 grants, totaling $1,025,957, to more than 72 local organizations.

EMERITUS BOARD MEMBERS

Dear Loyal Supporter, Thank you for your generous and continued support of the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund. We’re thrilled to let you know that we’ve had a record year with milestones you can be proud of. In 2021, we... • Distributed $82,500 to 14 Southern Arizona grantees—our largest annual allocation in our 22-year history. • Surpassed $1 million in lifetime giving. • Increased our endowment by 50% to $750,000. For 22 years, PHILANTHROPISTS like you have stepped up to the plate in support of Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ communities. As we celebrate our progress, we know of the critical need to sustain our organization for the longhaul. It’s why we’ll be focused on growing our endowment and increasing our investment in our amazing grantees.

SUSTAINING PROGRESS: THE ALLIANCE FUND ENDOWMENT

Q&A with Ethan Smith Cox and Andrés Cano

CANO: Ethan, we have some exciting news to share about our endowment, don’t we?

Thanks to the Alliance Fund’s critical support, we administered volunteer-based programs to reduce isolation and promote continued community engagement through highly personal support groups, home visits, book club, films, speakers, socials, and other programs including grief support and advance medical care planning.”

COX: That’s right, Andrés! Thanks to our loyal supporters, the total assets in our endowment now exceed $700,000—up 50% from last year. This means we’re exponentially paving the way for the Alliance Fund’s long-term success. CANO: This is incredible progress. How did we get here? COX: There’s no other way to put it—our donors are seeing a strong return on their investment and that’s why they are giving back: they want to sustain our progress. Specifically, two donordesignated endowments were added to our investment portfolio: the Kent Burbank and Vicente Talanquer Endowment Fund, and the Sylvia Stan Mulka Endowment Fund. These newly created funds, in addition to a generous gift by the David and Norma Lewis Foundation, helped us secure the assets that have gotten our endowment to the historic point we’re at today. CANO: Why is this endowment growth important and what does it means for our LGBTQ+ community? COX: The progress made in 2021 means we’re now just $300,00 away from a reaching $1 million in our collective endowment! It’s taken a village to get us to where we are today, and I’m optimistic about our ability to gain even more traction in 2022. The larger our endowment, the greater ability we have to invest in our grantees in the long-term. This is just the beginning.

Ethan Smith Cox is the Alliance Fund’s Development Chair. He’s been on the volunteer Advisory Board since 2018.

Andrés Cano is the first Director in the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund’s 22-year history. This is his second year serving as the Fund’s leader.

In partnership with the Alliance Fund, we were able to present three online concert experiences, hire LGBT arrangers, and write and create story and music that speaks to singers and audience alike. Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion training allowed our singers, board members and volunteers to find space for important dialogue as we seek to be better citizens and treat all individuals with equity and dignity.” – Reveille Men’s Chorus, 2021 Grantee

The Alliance Fund’s generous support means El Rio utilized grant monies to educate El Rio providers and LGBTQ+ clients on how PrEP works and can help prevent HIV. During the grant period, 165 providers/doctors at El Rio received training on PrEP. We were able to serve 109 LGBTQ+ people/patients in the El Rio PrEP program in the last year, despite pandemic factors.” – El Rio Community Health Center, 2021 Grantee
