Brookburn School

monkey puzzle

a part of the community

Parents know just how much happens in and around their children’s school. But how much do schools matter to the wider community? And how do they link up to it? At Brookburn, teachers have been working hard to help children understand how they are part of Chorlton – Manchester – the UK – the world. This can involve many things, from being part of Chorlton Arts Festival, to raising money for charities chosen by the School Council, to making links with schools in different places, or to growing their own vegetables. Schelene Ferris, the Headteacher, explains: “An essential part of our job as a school is to help children become citizens who can take an active part in their community and understand the challenges we face. But it’s also about using the community as a resource.” Parent volunteer helpers are a familiar feature in many primary classes. At Brookburn, this goes further. A recent project gave older adults the chance to get involved in helping in school. And a partnership with the PTA has brought parents into leading after-school clubs for pupils, to add to those led by teachers and outside agencies. Schelene Ferris says: “More than half of our pupils take part in after-school activities – an exceptionally high proportion. Our aim is that a suitable after-school choice should be available to every child. Using parents’ skills is essential!” The next step is to open up the school to the community. Some groups already use it but there is room for more, either regular bookings or one offs. The school was remodelled and extended when it was chosen to have an increase in its numbers and boasts full accessibility and a delightful shaded outside performance area, as well as good rooms and halls. With the pressure on school budgets, governors need to raise money from lettings. But they are also conscious that the school should be a resource for the community. So Brookburn is keen to hear from you!

Confessions of an English Sopamaker It is the age of austerity; David Cameron’s ‘big society’ decrees that a greater sense of community spirit and minimal government intervention is the key to economic wellbeing. Rather than allow the electorate to ponder this wisdom, he has, like any great leader, taken the bold step of forcing our hand with massive cuts in spending and neutering the public sector. To ensure that the private sector doesn’t become too complacent or lazy, VAT has also been raised (most items are now 2.5% more challenging to own). That said, given the scarcity of job openings in the market today, are we due a resurgence in the entrepreneurial self-employed? Not one to balk from a challenge, this column documents my first tentative steps in the private sector. It is a harsh environment for new business; the average man on the street able to pay his rent, his utilities and occasionally

his food bills. Any new business must find a way to make itself indispensable to the consumer, in this I believe our product to be a resounding success: Burlesque, cocktail themed soap. That’s right. Burlesque cocktail themed soap. Our bars use the finest olive oils, coconut oil, grape seed oil and castor oil for their moisturising, humectant properties and are subtly scented with essential oils designed to evoke classic cocktails (the Mojito bar with Mint and Lime essential oil!) and each comes adorned with Jules Cheret artwork giving a classic Moulin Rouge look. Now, I don’t mean to be telling tall tales and I will concede that we can’t compete with Tesco bars price wise… However, a quick glance at the ingredient lists on most commercial bars reveals a shameful list of synthetic preservatives, acidity

regulators, carcinogens and palm oils. I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest that most commercial bars dry the skin like the average chip pan fire, though I will say that our handmade soap leaves skin wonderfully hydrated and soft. Whilst BarSoap is still in its infant stages there’s still been a crippling amount of administration; cosmetic safety assessments (quick to ask for money), market research, our first experiences with the inland revenue (freakishly quick to ask for money), learning new Microsoft office packages. Oh – and the months of experimentation to create a saleable bar of soap. No doubt there’s more to come, but so far, I wouldn’t change a minute.

Open Gardens A J ADAMS Didsbury - Sunday 12th June Chorlton - Sunday 19th June

BEDDING PLANTS

Widest choice in Chorlton

In Didsbury, more than 25 public and private gardens will open this year, in aid of St Anne’s Hospice and The Alzheimers Society. Last year 1,000 people, young and old, walked or cycled between the gardens and the event raised over £8,000 for good causes. The organisers hope to smash through the £25,000 barrier this year, which also happens to be the 40th Anniversary of St Anne’s Hospice. There are bountiful delights and secret gardens, scrumptious cakes, live Jazz and beautiful sculpture by local artist Judy Taylor. Then there’s the Chainsaw Wood carving from Didsbury’s very own Andy Burgess and an exhibition of Mosaic flowers, made by pupils from Elm Grove and Broad Oak primary schools. Local artist, Sally Almond, who ran the school mosaics workshops will also be exhibiting some of her own sculptures that will soon be at The Eden Project where Sally will run workshops. The Open Gardens Photography competition will also be repeated after last year’s success. Didsbury Open Gardens takes place on Sunday 12th June from 12 noon till 5.30pm. Programmes (£5) are available at The Cheese Hamlet, Inman’s Newsagents and Delia’s Florist. www. didsburyopengardens.org for news and updates. Inspired by the success of Didsbury Open Gardens, Chorlton is also holding it’s first event this year. Over 20 gardens and yards plus two allotments, a school garden and the green roof above Unicorn Grocery will be open to raise funds for the charity Medical Foundation for Care of Victims of Torture. The charity provides therapeutic, medical and legal help for refugees who have been tortured or lived through communal violence. Gardens are open on Sunday 19th June from 11am to 5pm. Programmes (at £5) are on sale at Chorlton Bookshop on Wilbraham Road, Blossom Flowers on Manchester Road, Creative Recycling on Beech Road and Chorlton Plant Nursery on Vicars Road. If you need more information or have difficulty getting to Chorlton to buy programmes contact Merryn at dmcooke@btinternet.com or 861 0153.

from Chorlton Bookshop

A Bit Lost Chris Haughton The Man Who Invented the Daleks: The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation Alwyn W Turner Previously you may have thought that the Daleks were invented by a mad wheelchair-bound alien scientist named Davros. In fact, they were dreamt up by Welsh scriptwriter and one-time stand-up comedian Terry Nation. Not only that, but Nation also wrote for an entire raft of fantasy TV shows, including The Avengers and The Persuaders, as well as creating Blake’s 7 and Survivors. It’s the Daleks, though, that made his name - and his fortune, thanks to a chunk of the royalties on every Dalek toy. This isn’t an intensely personal sort of biography: it’s more like a hugely readable survey of the writer and his work. Along the way it takes in a real golden age of British television and post-war popular culture as a whole. The result is an absorbing book which will appeal to admirers of classic home-grown TV.

It goes without saying that picture books can stand or fall on the sheer quality of the pictures. In this instance, the illustrations are so hugely appealing, in a bold, colourful retro style, that it can’t fail. In truth the story here - in which a little owl has to be helped back to his nest by a helpful but easily confused squirrel - is highly reminiscent of Julia Donaldson’s Monkey Puzzle. But then picture books are rarely all that original, and the similarity’s no impediment to relishing the sweet humour and genuinely pin-them-on-yourwall gorgeous visuals herein. Irish-born writer/artist Haughton has won this year’s Booktrust Best New Illustrator Award for this, and deservedly so.

Exit Music Ian Rankin At Last, the day Inspector Rebus has dreaded is close by. Before the week is out he will be reduced to a mere civilian, no longer a serving Police Officer. As he and partner D.I Clarke try to tie up loose ends a Russian poet goes and gets himself murdered. At first glance this seems like a mugging gone wrong. However with D.I John Rebus on board, nothing is ever straight forward. This is the last of 17 novels to feature Rebus and is therefore understandably more sentimental than previous stories. In each installment we have followed Rebus as he solves crime in his unique style, barely staying within the limits of the law but usually getting his man. We are about to find out if he makes it to retirement in one piece or is his past going to come back and ruin is happy ever after? Whatever happens, we know that grumpy embittered Rebus is never going to go without a fight.

June in your Garden

Some years ago, I got together with a few friends to form a monthly gardening group called Sluggers – so called to reflect the amount of wine we drank throughout the course of the evening but also because it was a terribly witty and clever gardening name even though, at that time, not many of us were terribly clever or witty in our gardens. In fact apart from a few notable composting exceptions, most of us were happy (to drink and) to look pretty things up in Gardener’s World that we might grow next year if we had time. But there was and is something about the allocation of shared time to gardening that creates more of a desire to get out and experiment with new things as well as the confidence to try things you might not by yourself. Without sounding to cuddly-

wuddly or evangelical, there are lots of ways to share gardening that might take a bit of pressure off the individuality of it. At the practical end there are community allotments – where you could get involved in helping out with the plot (for example see www.en4m.org.uk). There’s also the open garden’s schemes in Chorlton & Didsbury in June where you can see what other people have done and quiz them about preferred methods of slug prevention. Vita Sackville-West was a great advocate of noseying around other people’s gardens for planting ideas stating that “Nothing could be more useful to the amateur gardener than to observe other people’s ideas, other people’s successes, and other people’s failures”. But one of the best ways of sharing gardening is to share your actual

Katherine Watson plants either by dividing them or by taking cuttings. In June you can divide your spring flowering plants and bulbs and give some to a neighbour or friend. You can also take softwood cuttings of things like penstemon, lavender, phlox, carnations. I’d have a go on anything with newish, fleshy growth (instead of woody bits), by cutting a bit off below a leaf joint about 8-10cm long and bunging two or three in a small pot covered with a see-through plastic sandwich bag. If you’ve got a free windowsill pop it on that and you should have a few new plants in the same amount of weeks – perfect for taking round to a friends with a bottle of wine and a copy of Gardeners World. Local Arts Roundup by Natalia Fedoruk Chorlton Creative Writers Hosted by Elizabeth Wells, former Creative Writing lecturer and published writer, Chorlton Creative Writers is a fairly new group that aims to allow you to share your work with like minded people. The group encourages the giving and receiving of constructive criticism, with handy discussions about style and technique in the friendly environment of The Lead Station on Beech Road. CCW meets every other Monday. Come along on the 6th and 20th June at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Lead Station. For more information, check out Chorlton Creative Writers Facebook page.

Winter’s Bone This month on Thursday 16th June, CFI will be showing Winter’s Bone (15), (2010). Adapted from Daniel Woodrell’s novel of the same name, strong willed mountain girl Ree, with less than desirable parents, has always looked after her family.

After the Sheriff knocks on her door, Ree finds herself on a search for her father, tackling the local drugs trade in which he has connections and putting her own life in danger to get to the truth. With even her own relatives adding to the lies and evasiveness, it’s a long road through the wilderness…Doors open 8.10pm, film starts 8.30pm (entry £5).

Chorlton Knits Chorlton Knits is a friendly group open to anybody who enjoys knitting. This group is open to beginners and those who are more advanced, and whatever your level, it gives the perfect chance to knit whilst socialising with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. This month, Chorlton Knits will be meeting in Battery Park on Thursday 2nd June at 6pm. The group meet on the first Thursday of every month, so don’t worry if you’ve already missed this month’s meeting! Entry is free, and it’s best if you bring your own equipment.

Manky Poets On Friday 17th June, copland smith will be holding his monthly poetry reading at Chorlton library, with special guest poet Kevin McCann joining. McCann is a Liverpool poet, who writes for both children and adults, and as well as holding workshops he has taken part in many radio programmes and been on the BBC. At Manky Poets, McCann will be reading adult poetry. There is also a chance for floor poets to read! Doors open 7.30pm, finishes at 9.30pm (entry £2).

Chorlton Sing Join in with the weekly Chorlton Sing at The Edge Theatre and Arts centre on Manchester road. This group is for anyone of any level, and provides a friendly atmosphere in which to meet new people and sing. The group meets every Tuesday, 7.30pm-9.30pm (£6 per session). Intergen in Chorlton Chorlton Intergen has been in action for almost a year and twenty fortunate residents are now having the time of their lives in one of three Chorlton Primary Schools – Chorlton C of E, Brookburn and Chorlton Park. They have become valued members of the school communities, sharing their skills, their interests and their life histories with the children and in return finding new friends and fun themselves.

There is nothing like being valued and greeted each week with a smile and an exciting piece of news to make an older person feel young and useful again! I was asked to find people living in Chorlton who would enjoy sharing reading, conversation, cooking, gardening, sewing,

knitting and almost any other skills with children and in addition I found people with the energy and expertise to help costume a nativity play (11 angels!) add that something extra to a school musical play, renew the soft furnishings for a 'Wendy' house, reorganise a school library so that the children could run it and lots, lots more. There are still opportunities for more lucky people to take part in these activities and also others – one school is looking for a pianist to help them, others have opportunities for woodland working, all the schools would welcome people who care about children to join them in speaking and listening opportunities, reading or just joining in what is happening in the class that

This opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 55 living in M21 and eager to become involved. If you would like to know more or start the process for becoming an Intergener then contact the Co-ordinator on 881 7693 or 07946 761785 or email on estelle.longmore@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you soon – it is such a worthwhile thing to do and there is much to be gained whether you are a cild of 5 or 75! (By the way, the oldest Intergener is 94!) The Edge

Theatre & Arts Centre You may have noticed signs advertising Chorlton’s new Theatre and Arts Centre known as The Edge. Last month saw its official launch alongside Chorlton Arts Festival and if you’re interested in the performing arts and creativity then this is the place to be. The Edge is a family run business, which offers a variety of arts projects on behalf of their registered charity Waters Edge Arts, as well as helping independent groups execute their own projects and activities. The venue is focusing on expanding new work and encouraging youth theatre, but amateur and professional companies of all ages can join in. Theatre wise, The Edge works predominantly with non-actors in order to create pieces of high quality, community based performances. Participants can expect to engage in improvisation activities, singing, image work and theatre games, as well as learning a variety of professional techniques. The Edge also hosts the sociable weekly Chorlton Sing every Tuesday from 7.30pm-9.30pm. Here, anyone who enjoys singing can come and join in with the fun whilst improving their skills. Children in YR1-YR6 can join in with the weekly Artful Splodgers class where they will get the chance to develop their inner creativity! Artists teach the children using a wide range of materials and techniques, and the small groups mean plenty of opportunities to work with and encourage each child to use their imagination. These classes run every Tuesday, 3.45pm-5.30pm, and booking is necessary. Waters Edge is one of the leading Participatory Theatre companies in the North West, with experience spanning over 20 years. The aim is to produce high quality performances for everybody to enjoy; equipped with a 70 seat theatre, multiple rehearsal rooms and enthusiastic instructors, it’s easy to see the potential. Add in the fact that The Edge is run by the talented and creative Waters family, who together have an impressive list of projects under their belt, and you’re in for a treat. In The Edge’s own words, ‘theatre has the potential to transform lives’.
