In search of the Rough Leech Gutter Every winter we get the Edge Lane Lake which depending on the amount of rain that has fallen can either be a puddle or some quite extraordinary expanse of water. Not that I ever gave it much thought but more recently it has seemed to me that this is the Rough Leech Gutter. It’s there on the old maps from the 1840s and runs from St Werburghs, following a line which takes in Corkland Road before cutting down close to the Four Banks and heading off towards Edge Lane and on to Turn Moss. On its course and in its time it would have provided water for Pit Brow and Clough Farms as well as the grand house at Oak Bank before emptying into a large pond by Turn Moss Farm. Already by 1841 a small section where it crossed High Lane and Edge Lane was culverted and it may just be that this now very old brick or stone culvert is the cause for the “lake.” It is one of the rivers and walks that I feature in the book Chorlton-cum-Hardy, A Community Transformed which will be published later in the year. And there were lots of them. All now have vanished underground with the exception of Chorlton Brook which appears into the light at various points around Chorlton before flowing into the

Mersey. There are some that crossed what is now Chorlton Park, another which seems to have flowed close to Acres Road and others which were probably no more than ditches for most of the year. A few might have dried up but the others will still be there quietly and unobtrusively trickling along, hidden and forgotten. And by and large they are just that. I asked the Corporation for any records and they passed me on the Environmental Agency who were very helpful and very thorough but could only tell me about the Chorlton and Longford Brooks. Not that this should surprise us for many of these water courses will have gone underground from the 1840s through to the beginning of the 20th century. There may be records in the papers of the Egerton and Lloyd estates who owned most of the township, but I doubt there will be any other records. So in the absence of paperwork it’s down to looking at that maps and listening to people’s experiences, which is how I can be fairly certain that the Rough Leech Gutter follows close to the line of Wilbraham Road somewhere by Silverwood Avenue going under Brundretts Road before appearing at Edge Lane. And it was a chance remark that I made on one of my recent walks and talks which prompted Tony who lives on Brundretts to tell me of the damp cellars at one end of the road. And damp cellars are a possible clue. But there are others. Phillip Lloyd once told me that his mother could remember the sound of Longford Brook which flows further north and west of the township as it made its

way underground. But as he said to hear it you had to be up early have no surrounding noise and hope for a day of rain the evening before. But other waterways and ponds have completely vanished and don’t even feature in the memories of people in Chorlton. So it is with Blomeley’s fish pond which ran along Beech Road from Acres up to Chequers Road, or the pond by the Bowling Green Hotel. A few might remember those out by Turn Moss and of course that place of mystery that was Sally’s Hole which tradition associated with the untimely death of a young woman. But that is for another story.

New Unicorn Garden Our new garden and seating area is a place for folk to sit and have a chat or a bite to eat from our deli after they shop, and for passers-by to enjoy. It was designed and built by local company Grassroots Gardening and is full of a mixture of native, edible and bee-friendly plants. Not all of them are edible mind, there are foxgloves in there which although beloved by honey bees are not so friendly to humans!

Look out for the 'step-over' apple trees at the front, they're being trained horizontally at about 2 feet high - this a traditional technique found in many an old kitchen garden and really useful for growing fruit in a small space without creating too much shading. There's also a pear tree being trained against the wall of the building.

Whalley Range Wildlife Film We’re a group of Whalley Range residents interested in nature. Started in Jan 2011, the WR4wildlife project aims to stimulate interest and increase knowledge and appreciation of the wildlife living amongst us in Whalley Range, and encourage people to do more to support nature. By deepening our connection with nature we can help enhance our sense of wellbeing. Activities include nature surveys, wildlife photography, bird song recording, bat walks, and gardening for wildlife. We have been selected to make a short film about our relationship with nature and wildlife in

Whalley Range. This is with Greater Manchester Local Record Centre who received Heritage Lottery Fund money to do various activities with the public. The film will be available online and maybe also included in a display at Manchester Museum in the Living Worlds gallery. I sent an email about it a while back to see who wanted to get involved, and there are 5 of us who’ll be working on it over the next 6 months. We’re keen to involve other people - do you have an unusual story to tell about your connection to wildlife? For example, a couple weeks ago the young swallows in

Hough End fields were having great fun following people around, practising their flying. I was cycling and had 6 of them swooping and swirling around me for ages - really lovely experience. If you have any stories about something that feels special to you we’d love to hear about it and perhaps include them in our film. So please do get in touch! TAG - You’re It! Loyalty cards - is it just me, or are they ten-a-penny? Or should that read penny-a-tenner? You can't buy a pint of milk these days without the cashier wanting to scan your key fob. My first port of call was Adams Greengrocers in Chorlton precinct. I had a dinner party to pull off that night and bought more veg than you can shake a stick of celery at. A quick flash of my card gave me an instant

saving of 10% and provided me with everything I needed - and more besides - to feed four ravenous friends with what is fast becoming my vegetarian signature dish.

Next up was a no-brainer. I’m forever losing my door keys, and keep forgetting to get a spare set cut; a fact which has taken its toll on my battered and bruised front door over the years. West Didsbury & Chorlton FC Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC are probably one of the oldest clubs in Manchester formed in 1908 as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and changed its name to West Didsbury AFC, The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when the pitches were sold for commercial gain. After several years of nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-8 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and

Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising.

Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful local junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. Success continued with the club winning the Murray and Bridgewater cups and the youth team winning their league. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with one of the highest point’s totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. Off the pitch the club runs the famous Bonfire night, accommodates Easter and Summer play schemes, works with local ecologists to preserve rare flora and is

engaging with local charities to provide opportunities for training, volunteering and resettlement. Many local people and organizations have benefited from using the club house for charitable or social events. The club is committed to be at the heart of the local communities and to continue to offer social, sporting and recreational opportunities for young people and indeed those who still wish to play in their later years. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 20112012 as a Step 7 club. Half Blood Blues Esi Edugyan This much applauded novel features all the themes a great novel should; betrayal, jealousy and friendship. The focus of the story is a group of mixed race jazz musicians forced to flee the Nazi Regime, where anything alternative is wrong. Although a very talented bunch the real star is a young trumpeter named Hieronymus Falk. Following a run in with some German soldiers the group are forced to Flee Berlin to outrun the authorities and protect Hiero. Eventually they reach Paris where they know it’s only a matter of time until the Nazi’s conquer the city. Living in fear and under constant pressure, decisions are made which change the group’s fortunes forever. With so many books set during the Second World War, it’s hard to imagine how an author could find a new angle, Esi Edugyan has. The Nazi victimization of minorities is simply the background to a fascinating and well-written story from a first-time novelist.

A First Book of Nature Nicola Davies and Mark Hearld The sun’s shining, the birds are tweeting: time to throw open the front door and explore the great outdoors. For young readers, to whom it’s all still lovely and new, this acts as a very nifty, wide-ranging primer. Davies is a trained zoologist, perfectly qualified to inspire a love of wildlife in children. With its pared-down text and scrapbook format, this covers everything from the seasons and the seaside to simple recipes using wild fruits. There’s literally a bit of everything, reflecting the sprawling panoply of the natural world. It’s all delightfully oldfashioned, but then thankfully, nature never really dates. It’s lovingly illustrated with line drawings and evocative washes of colour. This lavish hardback edition it’s a glorious object in its own right. Suitable for ages 4-6 Years.

The Stone Roses: War and Peace Simon Spence This year’s Stone Roses reunion has been a big moment of wish-fulfilment for whole generations of music fans. Their celebrated debut album from 1989 - at which point, incidentally, half the band lived here in Chorlton – provided a template for many musicians who followed after. They’re the stuff of local legend, and as you’d expect, there’s quite a tale to be told about their rise, fall and second coming. Happily, Spence does a fine job of telling it, covering all the friendships, back-biting and mischief-making with a steady hand. The band members themselves haven’t contributed, but Spence overcomes that through detailed research and extensive interviews with other key figures. As the cheeky title suggests, it’s never dry or stuffy. Instead it’s an engaging, entertaining read, marbled through with humour and fascinating little revelations – who knew that David Bowie wanted to produce them? For die-hards craving a Roses hit after the comeback shows, this is a real gift.

Circle Dancing in Chorlton Circle Dance is a national and international dance network. Dancing in a circle is an ancient tradition common to many cultures for marking special occasions, strengthening community and encouraging togetherness. Modern circle dance draws on the rich and diverse traditional dances of many countries, including the Balkans, Greece, Israel, Russia Ireland and France. There is also a growing repertoire of new dances to classical music and contemporary songs. Circle dances can be energetic and lively or gentle and reflective. The aim always is to experience the joy of dancing with others and to create a sense of well-being and community. Anyone of any age or ability can circle dance. Each dance is taught, there is no audience and everyone is welcome. So come on your own or with a friend (you do

not need a partner) and join in. We do not take a formal break during the evening; you may sit out a dance at any point if you want to.

The first time that you dance with us the class is free, so that you can see whether you are going to like circle dancing.

Circle dance groups meet regularly all over the United Kingdom and abroad, and hold special events, dance days, weekends and even circle dance holidays

have at least four different teachers taking classes who each has a different style and brings different types of world music to the sessions.

The dances range from very simple to the intricate and we use some beautiful music. The dances can be slow and meditative, faster and energising, fun and joyful, lyrical and relaxing.

What do I wear? Nothing special but make sure your footwear is firmly attached to your feet, fairly flat and comfortable. Some people choose to dance bare-footed.

What does it cost? You can pay £40 for 7 weeks, or £6 a session (£4 for concessions)

As I’m writing this in July, in a humid room with damp-and-not-drying clothes on the line – again – I’m hoping that as you are reading it in August, we have turned that ever-hoped for corner and are experiencing back-to-back sunshine and long lazy weekends in the garden. On the off chance that it’s not sunny, there are some exotic looking plants that are either from regions that do bask in sunshine or look as if they should do – all of which should give a pretty good show in August. If you’ve got an empty bed where the sun should be, perhaps try some Acanthus mollis (bears britches). It looks like a more exotic and slightly naughtier version of the foxglove with spiky leaves and fatter spires of purple and white flowers. It suits being in a gang if you can afford the space and will look big and interesting for a fair period of time - a description some of us would be happy with ourselves (exotic and slightly naughty that is – not big and interesting however true that may be). Another showy perennial with exotic leanings is the Alstromeria or Peruvian Lily which has trumpets of brightly coloured petals, half of which are striped lending it a whiff of safari-chic. This is another plant that has fallen out of favour with designers in the past and it will need some mulching in winter, but again, it

is colourful and interesting for a long period of time in an otherwise gloomy summer. Exotic shrubs could include the Callistemon or ‘Bottle Brush’ plant and you can tell where it gets its nick name, although these brushes are vivid red. One of my favourite shrubs for all round exotic appeal is the Hibiscus. I have Hibiscus syriacus ‘Oiseau Bleu’ tucked in behind my garden gate in a smallish space with only partial sun and it seems to do fine, although I’m sure it would be bigger and more prolific in full sun and a bit more space. Beautiful big purple/ blue flowers continue from August into autumn and when it’s not flowering the foliage is interesting in its own right. For an exotic tree, you don’t get better than Catalpa bignonioides Aurea which as well as sounding a bit like a Shakespeare sonnet produces yellow/lime leaves and panicles of showy, bell-shaped flowers in late summer, followed by slender bean-like seed capsules (which is why it’s also known as the Indian bean tree). Live Music Reviews Blew at Dulcimer

567 Wilbraham Rd, Chorlton, Manchester M21 0AE Soon after Dulcimer was born, The Guardian named it the hippest new venue in Manchester. Sporting red, swollen eyes (money clearly wasted on hayfever tablets) and an over sized bandage on my thumb (I cut myself at work) I didn’t exactly look hip. After looking at my phone for too long I decided to follow the distant pounding base upstairs where an indielooking girl strapped a glow stick wristband on me. Old school. Bar snacks consisting of pate, cheese and chutney are washed down with “Blood on the Tracks” beer. Limited edition film and music posters adorn the exposed brick walls and with folk and jazz being played, there’s a rustic atmosphere with a European cafe edge. Although it’s one of the most popular bars in Chorlton it could easily slot in to the Northern Quarter scene. Upstairs is a decent size and you have the option to stand or sit. I chose the latter and sit in a dark corner to hide my monstrous thumb and eyes. A loud static noise introduced the first band, Kane and BKJ. A table, projector and laptop is the sum total of their presence. The low tone of electro with elements of trance and drum and bass create an impressive sound. The candlelit ambiance suddenly plays a vital role as one of the talented duo plays electric guitar and then the saxophone somehow perfectly over the feedback noise and the unidentifiable images on the screen. I soon find myself reminiscing about a band I saw a few years ago called My Bloody Valentine. These two impressive

multi-tasking gents know their stuff; they remind me of Squarepusher with a hint of early Aphex Twin. They manage to use loud, alternative sounds with live musical instruments to create an upbeat but mellow atmosphere. It’s an idyllic setting for a post Warehouse Project night out; somewhere you need to chill but still feel a buzz. They end with a healthy dose of applause. Following that, I was almost blown out of my chair by the heavy, deep, loud and trembling bass introduction to the following act; Grave Architecture. It was just what the suddenly crammed bar wanted. A haunting and dark sound carefully built up and teased creating an on-theedge-of-your-seat excitement; anticipation for the underflow of funk to kick in. It was technical genius; industrial noises intertwined with clever yet simplistic techno tunes. This young chap who’s face was hidden beneath his laptop managed to cleverly mix old school nineties rave, distorted noise with a constant drum and bass that flowed between layers of technical wizardry. Lets say it was more Dave Clarke than David Guetta. I couldn’t have agreed more when a fellow dancer shouted “I used to dance to this sort of stuff!” I highly recommend this night if you feel your SERIOUS party days are over. Catch it next time at Dulcimer on August 4th, Saturday.

Having not been in East Didsbury for a long while; stepping on old territory I did feel slight withdrawal symptoms (according to a friend I had become trapped

within the “Chorlton bubble”). The venue is light and airy and the layout is appealing, although the cream and beige walls make it feel like another chain bar and prices are steep, I am tempted by the two for one cocktails. I realise I will have to pull off the “This is my drink and the other is my friends” pose though. Five minutes later I have two “June bugs” and being hypnotized by the television screen churning out offers: “Happy Mondays 50% off food!” “Tikka Tuesdays 2-4-1 Curries!” The gig was upstairs in an intimate dimly lit room. Despite being warned by the singer earlier “This gig is doomed!” (late arrival of a PA System and the bass player was replaced due to illness) her voice was absolute jazz perfection. Her classic wavering vocals quickly filled the cocktail scented air. Describing songs as “This is a smoochy one” to “Lets spice it up a bit with a samba that I’m just going to go and get out of my bag”; you couldn’t fail to be charmed. I particularly liked her rendition of Loverman. I’m no jazz expert, but it was lovely to hear covers of Miss Jones, Someone to Watch Over Me and especially her version of Bjorks Someone to Love. The Jazz Evenings are held at this venue most Tuesdays and are run by a very friendly company called “Creative Space”. I would definitely recommend a visit. Word of warning though; do not eat crunchy based snacks during this event. The noise is deafening!

Overall: the perfect choice for a leisurely lunch or a quick bite, especially when you fancy something just that little bit different. It comes highly recommended!

Overall: a bit chilly when I visited, but come the better weather a good place to occupy your little ones whilst you take a quick bite, indulge your own artistic leanings or simply relax with a good book - plenty of which are available.
