meet our new editor It’s more than five years since I first started Community Index back in April 2008, and we’ve come a long way! From our beginnings, with a circulation of just 5000, (hand delivered by me every month, occasionally with the help of my ever biddable boyfriend, Sam) we’ve grown to a circulation of 20,000, expanded into Didsbury and now have a wonderful team of volunteer writers and a professional delivery service.
As the magazine has grown, so has the administrative workload and what was manageable by one person is now proving too much. It’s time to restructure! To that end I’d like to introduce you to Joe Beech. He’s been our designer for a number of months and is now taking responsibility for the day to day running of the magazine. If you phone us up, he’s the one that’ll answer the phone. If you’d like to advertise, or have anything you’d like to go into Community Index, he’s the person to talk to. Sam Paechter (he’s still
going out with me after all these years) has taken on responsibility for all things financial and he’s also our chief proof-reader, so if you find a mistake in Community Index, it’s all his fault! But don’t worry, I’m still in overall control, and if these young scallywags put a foot wrong I’ll have something to say about it!

CHORLTON PEOPLE Carol thompson - tag! Pass it on
C
arol Thompson is a local businesswoman and active member of the community, involved with Chorlton and Didsbury Traders, Green Chorlton and Chorlton Book Festival. After working her way around Europe for a year, Carol took Business Studies at UMIST before launching the Tag! Pass It On scheme. A loyalty card with a difference (offering savings across a wealth of local, independent shops and businesses), TAG! recently featured in an article in The Guardian newspaper.
What led you to set up the Tag! Pass It On scheme?
I’m just a hippy biker at heart. I think that large chains are too powerful. I hate clone towns, and love the quirkiness, brightness and character of independent shops, which are usually better value and a lot more interesting. The TAG! scheme was the main sponsor for Chorlton FM in its first year, and organised treasure hunts involving children from local schools in Chorlton, Levenshulme and Didsbury - which are the largest TAG! scheme areas. Also, I wanted to give my son Sam some commercial experience, so he set up a TAG! scheme in Durham whilst there at University. He taught himself website design in order to do the TAG! website.
How successful do you think the scheme has been to date?
Businesses that use the scheme report that being part of TAG! brings real benefits and helps put local independent shops in the public eye. For a mere £5, cardholders have access to hundreds of pounds worth of savings. TAG! cards are accepted at Chorlton, Levenshulme and Withington street markets as well as local shops. We’ve issued sixteen thousand cards in three years, with profits helping community causes such as Green Chorlton and Chorlton Good Neighbours. More and more businesses are asking ‘have you got your TAG! card?’ Recently, we featured in an article in The Guardian
Are there any plans to expand TAG! into new areas? No - I’m far too busy. The scheme currently covers Chorlton, Didsbury, Levenshulme, the Heatons, Cheadle, and the Market areas of Stockport and Durham City Centre. We have no plans to widen the area we cover, but are more than happy for the scheme to be adopted
by interested traders or a community group.
How do people sign up to the scheme? Independent businesses and shoppers alike can sign up to the scheme by visiting our website at: www.tagpassiton.com
Who or what has been the greatest influence in your life? My dad. His mantra was ‘no such word as can’t’. He served in North Africa in Word War Two, building bridges, etc. He was a bit of a maverick. When I was younger, I wanted a motorbike, something my parents strongly disapproved of. I worked for two years on Bolton market and in various restaurants, saving to buy my first bike. When Dad saw how serious I was, he bought me one - a Belstaff - as a present.
What is/was your favourite place in Chorlton?
Chorlton Meadows: lots of happy memories there. And there used to be a home brewing shop on Manchester Road. As a student, I learnt everything there is to know about making beer and wine; although the results seldom made it out of the demijohns or plastic brewing bins.
Complete the following: “I love Chorlton because ...”
“... when I’m out on my bike (no longer the motorised variety) I feel at home here.”

JACKIE KAY Reality Reality
I
f you missed this in Hardback, here’s your chance to buy the paperback as it’s just been released. This is Jackie Kay’s third collection of short stories and once again many of them feature South Manchester locations. With 15 stories in total this is a real treat for Jackie Kay fans but also fans of the

short story format. Each story features a woman as the central character, showing the “reality” of their everyday lives. The women are often lonely, desperate and depressed. However Jackie Kay’s characteristic humour always shines through. With an amazing array of styles and genres this collection really is short story writing at its best. From magical realism to biblical
TINA SESKIS One Step Too Far
H
aving read it in a single afternoon sitting I feel it thoroughly qualifies for its page-turner status. The reader is drawn into the heart of the story right from the start. Emily Cole has decided to walk out on her husband and young son. Leaving Chorlton behind her, she gets a train to London.
6
Changing her name to Cat, a twist of fate leads her to meeting Angel and her new life begins. We are shown flashes from her former life and complicated family relationships which makes Emily/Cat’s decisions seem even more confusing. What happened to prompt such a drastic and desperate move? We are kept guessing right to the end. The key
It’s lovely to be able to champion a local author but she really doesn’t need any help! With a huge world-wide fan base, this latest collection will help to cement her reputation as one of the best short story writers around. If you get a chance to see her live, don’t hesitate. She brings her stories and poetry
to life with her hugely entertaining and engaging manner.
relationship in Emily’s life is with her twin sister. She seems hell bent on destroying herself and taking her sister with her. With so many elements to the plot this book could have easily become over complicated and dull. The skilful writing by Tina Seskis means we are kept enthralled right to the
last page. Her second book is due out soon.

The story of
CHORLTON-CUM-HARDY On the turn of a sixpence, the continuing story of Manley Hall and Sam Mendel
But the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 undermined his business and in 1875 he went bankrupt, which prompted the sale of the house and its contents. For a while the general public were able, for a charge, to wander the gardens and enjoy the floral displays as well as performances by a variety of brass bands.
L
ast month I was pondering a visit to Manley Hall in the June of 1879. This had been the grand home of Samuel Mendel, popularly known at the time as the “merchant prince”. It was a magnificent house of fifty rooms set in 80 acres of grounds which included a greenhouse, an orangery, deer park, fountains and ornamental lakes.*
silver plate and old Chelsea porcelain. So much that when in the spring of 1875 the contents of the house were put up for sale, the auction lasted for five days.
The estate extended east from Upper Chorlton Road as far as the Independent College, and south to Clarendon Road. Today Manley Park is all that is left of those extensive grounds and the rest is a mix of houses.
Not that Mr Mendel stayed around to watch, for after more than a decade at Manley Hall he moved south to London and on to Hastings, coming to terms with his dramatic fall from prosperity.
But back in the 1860s and 70s Sam Mendel’s home was reckoned to be everything a wealthy self-made man could desire and the inside of the house was as impressive as the grounds.
He had made his wealth transporting textiles to India and Australia around the Cape of Good Hope faster than any of his rivals, and from his offices in Cooper Street and a succession of warehouses around the city he was recognised as a successful entrepreneur who was never out of the papers.
Here were paintings by Constable, Gainsborough, Leighton, Millais and Turner along with fine furniture,
8
There were also various schemes floated to turn the estate into a “great pleasure resort”. “A winter palace was to be erected which should contain an art gallery, concert hall, promenade, library, assembly room, skating rinks, baths, and refreshment rooms. Shareholders were to be allowed to use the park for promenade purposes on Sundays, and the hall was to be converted into a club, membership of which should be limited to holders of one hundred Buy Andrew or more Simpson’s book shares in the “The Story of company.”** But these and other plans came to nothing and

it was pretty much death by a succession of small building plots as bits of the estate were sold off for development or turned into a golf course for the Manchester Golf Club.
made more so by a letter from Mr Ellis in the Times from June 1887 in which he deplored the abandonment of the plan to transform the estate into pleasure resort.
The Hall still attracted the curious, and so it was in the June of 1904 that this couple wandered into the grounds and had their picture taken at the rear of the grand old house. By then its years of neglect were only all too clear to see from the overgrown kitchen garden and bricked up rear windows and it was demolished in 1905.
“There is not in the United Kingdom a town that has greater need than Manchester of healthy and refining influences, and there is not a more attractive and charming property than Manley-Park.
But like all such stories there is still more. Back in 1875 the house had been bought by the coal merchant Ellis Lever for £120,000 and according to the historian Cliff Hayes, Mr Ellis never paid up.*** This in itself is intriguing but
“But while the people of Manchester and Salford are perishing for lack of pure and healthy surroundings this magnificent property is being allowed to go to decay or become absorbed by the builder. “Manley-park is thoroughly well wooded, and all the trees being vigorous and healthy. That there should fall to the

axe man to be replaced by rows of houses I look upon as a misfortune to the city.”**** Which raises all sorts of questions about the involvement of Mr Ellis in the estate but those are for another time. As for Samuel Mendel he died in 1884. Pictures; from the Lloyd Collection * The land had cost £250,000 and the house another £50,000 to build. ** City News on October 8, 1904, quoted in Manley Hall, http://manchesterhistory.net/ manchester/gone/manleyhall. html ***Hayes. AUGUST in your Garden
A
fter years of neglect, I have finally got round to doing my front garden and having thought it was a shady north facing spot, I’ve realised that actually between the houses in the morning and at the end of the day it gets quite a lot of sun. This is the thing with aspect. We can’t assume that because we have a south-facing garden we will automatically get sun all day. It very much depends on where other houses are in proximity to our boundaries; what other people are growing in their gardens and how shallow our plots are. Equally, north-facing plots can get sun in slithers or arcs that can be unexpected and enough to allow us to grow a wider variety of plants. The other thing with many plants is that they too can be unexpected
and thrive in a spot where they wouldn’t normally. A friend of mine has very successfully grown a member of the buttercup family, Trollius ‘Cheddar’, in the same bed as her alliums. Alliums need well-drained soil and Trollius usually needs moist soil. Quite a few of the plants I’ve chosen for my front garden will flower well into August. Two key plants will have already finished flowering but retain their foliage through to September – Sisyrinchium
striatum and Geum ‘Leonards Variety’. The purple spires of Salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’, S. nemerosa ‘Lubecca’ and Nepeta ‘Walkers Low’ having looked stunning with the pale yellow spires of the Sisyrinchium, will carry on flowering throughout August with the ornamental grasses Eragrostis curvula ‘Totnes Burgundy’ and Stipa tenuissima providing textural accompaniment. An often-overlooked perennial is Tradescantia worth giving a go as it flowers reliably from early summer to autumn. I have used T. ‘Purple Dome’ in the front garden which has a deep velvet blue/purple hue and is lower growing than the purple spires of the other perennials. Finally, one plant I couldn’t resist was another variety of Sisyrinchium, this time a low growing variety called ‘Quaint and Queer’ which has charming little bronze/chocolate flowers that close at night but spring back open with the first light – arguably more quaint than queer.

L
loyds came back well from their first defeat of the season in the Taylor Bowls Manchester Premier League with a comfortable 12-4 at The Railway, Congleton; notching up their eighth victory of the season and keeping their title hopes bubbling. After two early defeats for Pete Smith and Craig Shore, Lloyds got their act together with wins for Ryan Sandham, Steve Ridley, Ben Phillips, Michael McDonnell and Lee Fletcher. Chris Alderson finished off a good display with a commanding 21-19 win.
The Lloyds Mixed team in the Trafford Evening League continue to sweep all before them as they kept up their 100 per cent record with a 61-chalk win at Davyhulme Social A - This was their 12th win of the season. It’s tight at the top of division one in the Sale and District
League. An epic battle between the top two went in favour of Levenshulme as they entertained leaders Fallowfield by 19 chalks. South West Manchester CC had their best result of the season with an 82-chalk win over fellow strugglers Pickering. Cringlewood were also on form as they hit 200 chalks hosting Quarry Bank.
The clash of the top two in division two saw Partington close the gap on leaders Bowling Green with a close 13-chalk success and Brooklands kept in touch with the top two as they beat Carrington by 35 chalks.
NEW HONOUR FOR STEVE
C
horlton judo legend Steve Pullen MBE has won another award to add to his huge collection after a night to remember at Kensington Palace. Steve was presented with his award for services to SAMBO wrestling by Prince Michael of Kent. Steve explained: “SAMBO wrestling is the third recognised style of wrestling and has up to one and a half million participants throughout the world. “I was part of the movement introducing SAMBO to the UK in the 1970s after it had taken off in the Commonwealth
22
countries in the 1960s. I helped to form the British SAMBO Federation in 1985 and I won a bronze medal in the Moscow Olympics. “The Commonwealth SAMBO Federation was established in 2012 and has doubled the number of participant countries. Our aim is to get it back into the
Pic – Steve is pictured with old colleague John Lawrinson and Prince Michael of Kent Olympics in 2020. “It was great to meet up with old colleagues
at Kensington Palace and a real honour to meet Prince Michael.”
