Whalley Range 4 Wildlife We are a friendly group of local people of all ages interested in nature. Formed earlier this year after receiving U-Decide funding, we’ve been having fun doing surveys of birds, bugs, bats, hedgehogs and flowering plants as well as air and water quality surveys in Alexandra Park and Hough End Clough. We’re interested in finding out about the animals and plants living in our area and what we can do to support them. This is very important because in the UK and across the world species are

7

declining or becoming extinct at an alarming rate, and its because of us humans. Many scientists believe that we are now living through the 6th major extinction of species. The last one was 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs disappeared.

hedge sparrow, tree sparrow and common toad. Hopefully we’ll discover more of these priority species living amongst us.

The good news is that there are several species present in Whalley Range which are on the UK biodiversity priority list as they are in serious decline and need special protection: hedgehog, soprano pipistrelle bat, dunnock, song thrush, bullfinch,

Acupuncture... who needs it? Historically, the Yellow Emperor is seen as the ultimate guru of Chinese medicine, who reigned during the third millennium BC. He is believed to have said, ‘Of all things under heaven, nothing is more precious than human beings….. This is true from royalty to the commoners’ (Ni, 1995). A beautiful philosophy, but currently the Yellow Emperor’s ‘commoners’ are out in the cold, far from the traditional view of ‘medicine for all’. However, there are an increasing number of ‘Low Cost’ clinics being established across the UK. Acupuncture is offered for a minimum charge, without compromising the expertise of the practitioner. The Acupuncture Works is one such clinic in Manchester. It’s a ‘not-for-profit’, community cooperative located in the city centre. Treatments are as little as £15 for those on a low income. How do they manage it!?

Acupuncture can be effective for conditions that don’t respond well to conventional medicine, such as stress, insomnia, migraines, fertility issues, anxiety, depression and low back pain. These conditions may be chronic and debilitating, resulting in a reduced ability to earn a living. There is the strong likelihood of the chronically ill being on a low income. The World Health Organisation is very clear that chronic illness creates large, adverse economic effects on individuals and communities. The cost of acupuncture in Manchester is £35-£50 an hour, making this effective treatment only accessible for the privileged few. Even so, treatment is not always sustainable, as longerterm conditions require longer-term treatment. Acupuncture may be regarded as a luxury instead of a serious medical treatment. This is a world away from its original ethos, and prompts the question, so who really needs it? Possibly those who can’t afford it?

They use the Chinese design of a multi-bed clinic, like a hospital ward. Patients are treated in one large space, with screens for privacy, ensuring that everyone can observed for safety, but enabling several patients to be treated simultaneously. The savings are passed on to the patient. The practitioners are members of the British Acupuncture Council and uphold its professional codes of conduct. Michael is currently receiving regular low-cost treatment, he says, ‘I’ve had over 30 treatments at the Acupuncture Works and it has helped me enormously with my mental health problems that I have had for many years. It’s affordable and very good value for money especially as I’m reliant on benefits.’ THE ACUPUNCTURE WORKS IS:

• Targeting those on low income, disability

allowance or benefits • Open every Wednesday! • At London Scottish House, Mount St, M2 3NN • Close to The Midland Hotel and G-Mex • Contactable on 07590 903 714 • On line at www.acupunctureworks.org.uk

9 The British Acupuncture Council is working to encourage the commissioning of acupuncture through the NHS, however it may be quite some time before acupuncture is available free at the point of contact. The Department of Health and Social Care are also piloting “personal health budgets” in 30 areas across the country. Here a budget is set to meet patients’ needs as outlined in their health and social care plan. This will enable people with long term conditions, including diabetes, stroke, heart failure, dementia, mental health, substance misuse issues and even maternity needs to be able to fund their acupuncture treatment. Until these schemes are rolled out nationally, the low-cost, multi-bed option is available now for those in current need. For a map of multi-bed, low cost clinics visit www.acmac.net For more acupuncture information, current research or to find a private practitioner visit www.acupuncture.org.uk Annie Walker RGN BSc MBAcC Lic Ac

15 WAYS TO CREATE A GREEN HOME – PART 3 In the last of three articles Mike Macpherson of ADC Architects Ltd offers some exciting tips on how to make your home greener and how to choose green when making home improvements. Giving your house a green makeover or eco-refurb will reduce our carbon dioxide emissions & play an important part in helping to prevent climate change. This months tips 11-15 are more extensive home improvement ideas to create a green home.

11. Install Green Heating: More than 60% of the energy we use at home is used for space heating and hot water. An A-rated high efficiency condensing boiler is a must for any eco refurbishment project. Regulations stipulate that boilers can now only be installed if they are A- or B-rated on the Government's SEDBUK rating scheme, which means that all boilers in the UK have to be at least 86% efficient - a rating that condensing boilers currently exceed. For a boiler efficiency database visit:- sedbuk.com Instead of a traditional radiator-based heating system, another option is a warm water underfloor heating system, which is more energy efficient and more responsive in warming up the house quicker. Because the floor itself has a much larger surface area than standard radiators, the water can be heated to a lower temperature. An underfloor heating system costs around the same as a high quality radiator system but running costs can be between 10-30% cheaper. For those who want underfloor heating in just one or two rooms, an electric mat system might be better suited. For winter months, wood burning stoves are great room heaters. They are airtight

& more efficient than an open fire and wood is a carbon neutral fuel - logs are also a cheap form of fuel.

12. Use Renewable Energy: A large percentage of a home’s energy needs could be met through renewable energy technologies and you can save money on your energy bills by making use of solar panels, heat pumps and, to a lesser extent, wind turbines (which only work on sites with a good wind speed). The downside is that the payback periods on the initial investment can be long, although the recently introduced Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs) and Renewable Heat Incentives (RHis) should reduce payback periods (even with a reduced the rate of FiTs due from December 2011). If you are considering which renewable technology is the best option for you, the Energy Saving Trust website has a renewable energy selector www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/ renewableselector/start/ which offers advice on what’s most appropriate for your home & its location.

The main renewable energy options to consider are as follows:Solar Panels Generally there are two types of Solar panels, Solar photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal with Solar PV producing renewable electricity and Solar Thermal producing renewable heat for hot water. The specification of Solar thermal roof panels for hot water heating is generally a more cost effective solution, particularly on a South facing roof. Expect solar thermal panels to provide around 60% of annual hot water requirements, with installation costs around £2-3,000. Solar PV systems have a typical installation cost of around £1,000/sqm with the amount of electricity produced being around 100kWh/sqm/annum. There are many PV systems on the market, including versions that are integrated with roof tiles which avoids having a separate panel on top of a new roof. Heat Pumps Heat pumps are great for supplying underfloor heating but cost around £6-10,000 to install. In terms of efficiency, a ground-source heat pump is likely to have a higher coefficient of performance (COP) than an air-source pump, owing to the consistent temperature below ground (usually 10- 12°C) rather than the air (which varies with the seasons). Other Renewables Two other location dependent renewables are wind turbines and hydro power. If you’re interested in either option, you will need to commission a specialist site

13 heat that is usually lost in a standard ventilation system. There are also options to ‘passively’ ventilate your home, meaning it requires no energy at all; with either a pressure system or whole house passive stack system.

15. Recycle Materials & Use Recycled Materials: survey to establish the viability of the resource.

13. Change Windows: Older homes will benefit from new windows and they can have a huge impact on the comfort levels of your home. There are two main factors that play a part; the window frame and the glazing. In terms of thermal performance there is little difference between PVCu and timber frame windows, with aluminium being slightly less efficient. PVCu has received a bad environmental press and timber frame windows are generally preferable. However, there is an argument that as PVCu windows can be recycled many times, they might be a more sustainable option than initially assumed.. When it comes to glazing, there’s the option of either double or triple glazing with glass coatings available which

make glazing more efficient. Low emission (low-e) glass has an invisible thin coating of metal oxide, which allows the sun’s heat and light to pass through the glass, but also blocks heat from leaving the room. This reduces heat loss through windows by around 30%.

14. Ventilate Properly: Mechanical ventilation has become a necessity in our homes, but it can actually be a really energy-efficient way of both ventilating and heating, as well as providing a very pleasant living environment. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) is quiet, provides filtered air (helping asthma and hayfever sufferers). It will extract the moist, stale air from bathrooms and kitchens to a heat-recovery unit (usually situated in the loft), and pass it through a heat exchanger to recover around 65-70% of the

The average house uses around 164 tonnes of new building material in its construction. On average 13% of this new material will be wasted – 21 tonnes of waste & off-cuts that goes straight to landfill. To avoid waste, sort out unused building materials and make sure they are used by others. There are companies who will collect such materials, a good example is a local community timber recyling business Timber Recyling in Manchester (TriM); for information visit the website www.timberrecycling.org When carrying out your home improvements, use as many reclaimed materials as possible— this could be anything from recycled aggregate through to decorative finishes. Restaurant Review by Leon Horton

Saray café bar and restaurant Firmly ensconced in the heartland of Chorlton, Turkish café, bar and restaurant Saray has only recently opened, yet it already feels integral to the area. The décor is fresh and clean, with comfortable seating and fresh flowers on every table; whilst the lighting is subtle, but not too soft. The overall effect is contemporary, yet never seems anything less than authentic - with culturally appropriate (I assume) background music adding to the mood. The evening menu offers traditional Turkish cuisine, with one or two surprises: a wide array of hot and cold starters lead to a very healthy choice of meat, fish and vegetarian mains, which give way - past several salads, side orders and desserts - to a decent wine list. For a starter, my friend and I opted for the chef’s special meze platter for two (£10.50). Now, meze isn’t a term that often excites me - but unlike some establishments, whose version of that word can be a bit… well, iffy… we were faced with a veritable feast, a meal in itself - and perfect for all you lunch-time diners out there. Executed beautifully, a sample of just about every starter on the menu arrived at our table. Such favourites as sucuk (spicy Turkish sausage) and yaprak sarmasi (stuffed vines leaves) fought for table space alongside falafel, halloumi, olives and feta - with a choice of eight cold dips and a plethora of hot pitta. It was, as I say, a meal in itself, leaving us both worrying that we

wouldn’t be able to finish our main course. For my main, I ordered the pan fried salmon steak with mushrooms, cream and wine sauce (£13.50). Not a dish you would associate with Turkey, admittedly, but I’d only that day finished a month-long challenge to go ’veggie,’ and I was blinded by desire. Only when the waiter had taken our order, did I realise - for the purposes of this review, at least - that I should have gone for one of the more traditional lamb or chicken dishes. Any concerns I had about my choice, however, were quickly allayed when the food arrived. Thankfully, my friend chose a famous Turkish dish: Imam (£10.90), better known as stuffed aubergine. A vegetarian option - brimming with green peppers, onion, garlic and tomatoes, accompanied by rice and salad - my friend was insistent that whilst she was more than familiar with such, she’d rarely tasted better. A large, well-presented portion that certainly hit the spot. The Salmon steak - and a sizeable steak it was too - was cooked perfectly to my liking. A crisp top, with succulent, moist flakes underneath. The sauce was rich, as it should be, but subtle on the palate - and those new potatoes and fresh salad? Well, they just seemed right. I loved it; I make no apologies; though so generous was the portion, I struggled to finish it. I’m afraid so full were we after just two courses, we agreed to forgo the desserts in favour of

a last drink - before wending our way, all the happier for the experience. If I only have one criticism, it’s this: there really is so little to complain about. True, we were hunched up against the window at the far end of a table set for six, giving this reviewer the impression of friends yet to arrive. But that was pretty much our own doing, as we’d asked to sit by the window. Offering excellent food at very reasonable prices, Chef Duran - with the help of his brotherin-law, Baran, and his attentive, hard working staff - has made a fantastic effort to create a warm and welcoming dining experience. I think you’d be mad not to sample it.

(giving up) Meat...is Murder? by Leon Horton

Here’s a recipe for your delectation: take one confirmed (well - ish) meateater, deprive him of his staple food, and simmer over a low heat for a month to see what cooks. When the editor (I know where you live, Lesley) challenged me to go ‘veggie’ for a month, I thought: how hard can that be? Big bag of lentils, bit of fresh veg, a cook-book from the library… doddle! But then, as the day of commencement approached, something resembling panic set in. What, no cottage pie? No fish? No bacon? In November? I should explain my position. As the son of an erstwhile gamekeeper, I was taught how to kill and prepare my own meat - was brought up to believe that vegetarians were some kind of pallid, undernourished creatures who stalked those too green to

The offending Mung Beans

know any better. But no - that’s vampires. And they all live in Whitby. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not exactly new to this. In my teens, I was a vegetarian for three years; though, if I’m being honest, that was more out of teenage rebellion than any health concerns or interest in animal welfare. It’s been an interesting month. Full of motivation at the beginning, making my own pasties and pies (with my own pastry, I might add) and scouring the recipe books for new and interesting dishes, I discovered two things almost immediately. Firstly, you don’t have to give up cottage pie. There’s an excellent recipe for such, using lentils instead of beef, on Unicorn’s website (I know, I know, sounds wrong, but believe me: it’s delicious.) Secondly, I just can’t get with the mung bean. Try, as I did, to use them in casseroles and curries, this ‘versatile’ (why are they always versatile?) little bean gave me nothing but stomach ache and… well, we won’t go into what else. But there’s more to this game than lentils and beans. As the weeks passed, and my initial enthusiasm waned

somewhat, I realised I needed to broaden my horizons on the recipe front if I had any hope of completing the challenge. There’s a wealth of cook books out there; and whilst you can, if you so wish, simply substitute meat for meat-free alternatives like soya or Quorn, there really is no need to emulate a carnivorous diet. So, what have I garnered from the experience? Well, apart from an intense craving for fish, I was surprised how little I missed meat. True, on occasion I reneged on my mission to avoid meat substitutes, but even vegetarians are allowed lazy days. I also noticed an improvement in my pocket. I’ve heard people argue that a vegetarian diet is prohibitively expensive. Well, yes, it can be if you live on processed vegetarian ‘fast foods’. But with a bit more effort and a little invention in the kitchen, I found it much cheaper. As for the health argument… well, I can’t honestly say I noticed a difference. I think it was Linda McCartney who suggested we all have one meat-free day a week. I’m not here to argue the implications - moral or otherwise - of a vegetarian diet, but I’d say try a week or even a month without meat. You might surprise yourself. Just stay clear of those mung beans. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to make myself a bacon sandwich (Hey, I never claimed to be a convert).

December in your Garden by Katherine Watson The winter garden is often viewed through closed windows and doors, as a bare, uninteresting place to be largely ignored until the spring. Many of us arrange our gardens around two or possibly three seasons – spring, summer and maybe autumn, imagining that the months of December (the ‘phoney winter’ in Christopher Lloyds view), January and February are too brutal and too static for anything to grow or bloom. There are, however, lots of shrubs that come into their own in December providing both a visual treat as well as in some cases an olfactory one - i.e. they smell nice too. In her book The Curious Gardener Anna Pavord states that like a hologram, with a

small tilt the December garden reveals stalwart, interesting winter shrubs that when tilted the summer way might be inconspicuous. The Viburnum group of shrubs are worth having a look at - particularly tinus and bodnantense for winter interest. V. tinus is a very hardy evergreen with white clusters of flowers and V. bodnantense, deciduous but with delicate pink flowers through the winter. A slightly less hardy but very interesting shrub is Garrya elliptica, with its icicle-like tassles providing a wintry show. “James Roof” is the standard variety and grown against a sheltered wall it can, if tied in, have the same effect as a climber. Fairly standard shrubs such as Cotoneaster horizontalis and Skimmia

japonica provide some lovely red-berry interest in winter and the impressive winter shrubs, Hamamelis mollis (witch hazel) and Chimonanthus praecox (winter sweet) can be stand-alone features in a bigger garden. There are lots of varieties of Hamamelis, with a wide-range of colour from red to bright yellow held in spindly flowers up and down the branches. For olfactory satisfaction, the Christmas Box (Sarcococca confusa) is always good and just for the name alone the ‘Snowbells’ Clematis is worth a try offering creamy white bell shaped flowers from December to March.

Happy ‘Indie Christmas

TAG! (pass it on) rewards you for shopping TAG! (Pass it on) is part of a growing ‘Shop Local’ movement which helps support local shops and services; a movement which is, in large part, rooted in a person’s attachment to where they live and their desire to see their area flourish. In 2010 in the UK, £76 billion was spent on groceries; 80% in supermarkets. Supermarket ‘local’ shops are springing up everywhere as the major chains fight for an ever higher share of our spending in the current circumstances of higher grocery inflation and reduced disposable income. The result is an independent sector under siege. Neither government legislation nor local issues such as increasing rents and parking price-hikes are doing anything to alter this situation. If we wish to save this vital part of our communities it’s up to us to make the necessary difference. Independents are one-of-a kind, distinctive businesses; they’ve got character. It’s this character which helps attract other new businesses, residents, visitors and investment to the area. Walk into a local Chorlton business and more often than not you are greeted and served by the owner, someone with a unique passion and knowledge of the products they are selling and the community they are serving. When local community projects need support, our independents often come together to offer it and get things done. They are part of the very fabric of Chorlton and have a personal stake in its well being, guaranteeing that they act in the interests of the wider community. On top of that, they bring disproportionate benefits to the local economy and job-creation. Simply put, money spent locally stays local: it will be used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, local professionals and suppliers.

If we are to have any hope of creating a resilient, green economy – a ‘network of local sustainable economies, providing social contact and inclusion with responsible local production and exchange of goods and services’ we will need a strong independent sector, accountable to the local area.

s’ and New Year

g smart, local & independent TAG! (Pass it on) TAG! (Pass it on) is a not-for-profit CIC (Community Interest Company) which aims to encourage us to change our spending habits. For all of the reasons given above we created the TAG! card; for £5 you are rewarded with a huge range of deals and discounts when you shop with independents. The variety and quality of the 50 (and counting) local independents in our scheme – as well as the 300 or so to be found in other areas of South Manchester - is amazing and the savings on offer from using your card and supporting them are HUGE; from essentials such as groceries, eyecare and cakes to fine dining, fashion, furniture, party items, flowers, toys, plumbing and even (clay pigeon) shooting. Chorlton’s charities and community groups can make use of the Tagpassiton scheme to sell cards to raise money for their own causes. It’s a fantastic hyperlocal and community-focused way of raising money. Groups such as the Big Green Festival and St John’s Primary keep 50% of the proceeds when they actively promote shopping locally and independently to their supporters. For more details about what we do, how we help and what you get please visit the TAG! website at www.tagpassiton.com. New TAG! cards can be bought online or locally at Village Dry Cleaners, A J Adams, Khawaja Bros, Chorlton Wholefoods and most other scheme members. City Centre Calm...by Kirsty K Latham Perfectly situated in the heart of the city centre, Manchester Art Gallery stands majestically, central in location to Manchester's most iconic landmarks. It is befitting that a building which houses some of the worlds best pieces of artwork depicting personal and generalised views of culture and society, would be within an area of the city that is rich in revolutionary acts; whether it be the Battle of Peterloo, the suffragette and anti corn-law rallies, the 'Madchester' periods (both Victorian and more recent), the infamous Sex Pistols gig, or the creation of the Gay Village. The gallery was originally designed as two separate buildings. The main entrance building (1824) was home to the Royal Manchester Institution, which was extended in 2002 to incorporate the Manchester Athenaeum (1826). Both buildings were designed by artist and architect, Sir Charles Barry. Barry is most renowned for his redesign and architectural role in the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament, as well as designs for churches, schools, stately home restorations, and his remodelling of Trafalgar Square. Other local examples of Sir Charles Barry's architectural work include Buile House in Salford and All Saints church in Whitefield. Barry's work was so prolific that he became a member of prestigious art academies throughout Europe and also of the American Institute of Architects, as well as being knighted in 1852 by Queen Victoria. It is not just the artwork that is housed within Manchester Art Gallery that holds precedence for the city, but the gallery itself. Entry to the gallery is free, with

the occasional exception of some exhibitions. There is the option to make a small donation in the galleries main entrance. Once inside the gallery you will find 21 rooms, over three floors, showing changing exhibitions as well as permanent collections, including work from the 17th century through to modern and contemporary pieces, and a varied collection of interesting items from various periods in history, situated in the Craft and Design gallery. Collections housed within Manchester Art Gallery beautifully reflect the history of this city. Whether it be directly, via L.S.Lowrys studies of Mancunian life, and the Civic Art Collection of Manchester, or indirectly, with pieces that depict international issues on the subjects of race, discrimination or sexuality, such as David Hockney's 'Peter C', portraying his love for a fellow student, created in a time when homosexuality was a criminal act. Situated on the 1st floor is the Pre-Raphaelite gallery, a collection that Manchester Art Gallery is famed for. Featuring the vividly beautiful artwork of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and fellow members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, as well as other artists involved in the movement. The gallery is currently working on a project which aims to discover what the movement means to modern Mancunians; 'The Pre-Raphaelite Experiment'. Along with the collection within the gallery, Manchester also has 12 murals that were commissioned in 1878 to hang in the Town Hall. Painted by Pre-Raphaelite artist, Ford Madox Brown, the murals depict scenes based on the history of

29

Manchester. Brown had a strong disliking for the British class system, and during his time in Manchester he became involved in creating a scheme to try and relieve the mass unemployment in the city. Manchester Art Gallery is currently holding an exhibition showcasing a vast collection of Browns work, which runs until 29th of January 2012, and costs ÂŁ8 to view, ÂŁ6 concessions. All work within the exhibition, as with the rest of the gallery, is accompanied by a full description. Audio guides are also available to use throughout your visit, as well as leaflets to guide you through the galleries, and regular tours. The gallery offers a number of free activities for children and families, with story bags and explorer tool belts available free of charge, and interactive galleries intended to encourage children to engage with art. The gallery gift shop offers a brilliant selection of books for both adults and children, prints and postcards of artwork within the collections, and locally hand-made jewelry. Adjacent to the gift shop is the gallery cafe, which offers freshly made hot and cold meals and drinks, and free wifi. The gallery has easy access throughout for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs, as well as lifts, a cloakroom, and baby-changing facilities.

South Manchester U3A Human beings are social animals with great natural curiosity which, properly nurtured, will last a lifetime. It is this concept which forms the basis of the U3A. Membership is open to anybody who has retired from full time employment. Fundamental to the U3A is the sharing of knowledge and experience. Research suggests that older people learn best when they are in control of their own learning. At this stage of life most people are not looking to gain qualifications but to enjoy the challenge and satisfaction gained from sharing and extending their knowledge with like minded people. 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the U3A in the U.K. In 1981 Eric Midwinter, a Manchester man, was interviewed on the B.B.C. 'You

and Yours' programme in his capacity as director for the Centre for Policy on Ageing. He was discussing the idea of U3A, which had started in France in 1972 where they did not have the benefit of organisations equivalent to our Open University or WEA. The response to the interview was overwhelming and led to the setting up of the University of the Third Age, U3A, this side of the channel. From these early days the movement has grown rapidly and there are now over 800 U3As in the UK and over 250,000 members. Each U3A is autonomous and develops to meet the interests of its own members. They operate under the umbrella of the Third Age Trust, a registered charity. The South Manchester U3A started in Burnage in 2003, expanded to include Didsbury, then took the name 'South Manchester U3A' in 2008. This U3A has over 160 members who are able to attend the monthly general meeting held at 2.00pm on the first tuesday of each month at Emmanuel Church, Didsbury. Within this U3A there are over twenty different subject groups which members can select from and join. The groups include art, science, computers, poetry, philosophy, bridge, gardens, French, Pak/Indo cookery, walking, lunch club, heritage, book club, play reading, scrabble, photography, theatre, music appreciation, creative writing. New subjects are

regularly added. The groups are member led and most meet monthly. Usually the only charge for group attendance is to cover accommodation costs. The annual U3A membership fee, currently ÂŁ10, is to cover costs and a capitation fee to the Third Age Trust which, as well as giving backup support, publishes a quarterly magazine. As a member of U3A one also has access to regional and national residential courses which take place from time to time on diverse subjects. Next Easter the NW Region of U3As will run a three day residential school at Myerscough, near Preston, where Egyptology, archaeology, geology, golf, philosophy, science and creative writing are all offered for study.

If you are interested in joining us do come along as a visitor to one of our monthly general meetings. Further information will then be available. Otherwise you could telephone the Chair, Edna on 0161 434 2509 or the Groups Coordinator, Peter, on 0161 224 8527

Danielle Lowy from Rubbish Revamped shares low-cost Christmas card ideas What you’ll need: • A4 card (eg from used office file dividers) • Paper from magazines, leaflets or junkmail • Embellishments like glitter and little buttons • Scissors • PVA glue • Kebab stick • Sweet wrappers • Stick of glue 1 Fold the card in half. 2 Select your paper for the tree shape.

Cut 5 rectangles about 7 x 10cm (that’s 1/4 of Community Index page!)

3 Roll the paper lengthwise on the kebab stick.

Glue about 1cm along the length and hold the paper down whilst it sticks.

4 Slide the roll of paper off the stick. 5 Make four more rolls. 6 Cut a roll about 7cm wide for the bottom of the tree. Make about 10 more rolls, each one about 0.5 cm shorter than the roll below it.

7 Glue the roll on with PVA glue.

35 8 Make a trunk, pot and star from sweet

wrappers (or cut them out from spare paper). Glue them on.

9 Embellish! Here’s some we made before ... You’ll need to munch through a few chocolates to make this one - it’s a tough life...
