Established in 2012, initially to raise money for Christmas lights, Chorlton Traders has had a busy year. Come and join us at Chorlton Precinct on Saturday 7th December for a big Chorlton Christmas celebration. The day starts with the second Chorlton Art Market in the precinct from 10am to 4pm, packed with stalls offering unique Christmas gift ideas, mulled wine and hot food with entertainment while you browse. And with those TAG! Cards you’ll have lots of incentives to support small businesses all over Chorlton not just on this special day but saving locally right over the Christmas shopping period. Look forward to seeing you all!

Christmas Book Selection from Chorlton Bookshop
There are some great books around at the moment with a definite Manchester theme. Why not give somebody a taste of Manchester for Christmas?
My Autobiography Alex Ferguson
This sensational offering has become the fastest selling autobiography of all time. Within, Ferguson has well and truly spilled the beans offering us his opinions on everyone from Beckham to Gerrard. Perfect gift for any football fan.
Manchester Stories David Clayton
This fascinating account of what has made Manchester great has been written by a born and bred Mancunian. Eighteen separate stories feature well known faces as well as those you may not have heard of. Between them they’ve all helped to put Manchester on the map. It’s amazing to learn that a city which produced Bernard Manning could also produce L S Lowry and Oscar winner Robert Donat!
Autobiography Morrissey
This is a must read for fans of The Smiths or indeed Morrissey himself. Insisting it be published as a Penguin Classic simply adds to the singer’s legendary quirky reputation. Love him or hate him, he certainly knows how to generate publicity. Fans will be particularly interested in what he has to say about the notorious and vicious court battle with his ex- bandmates.
Didsbury Through Time Andrew Simpson/Peter Topping
Andrew Simpson, a well- known local historian and local artist Peter Topping have combined their talents to come up with this fascinating look at Didsbury’s past. Pairing new paintings with old images, we are able to see the changes which have occurred in Didsbury over the last 100 years. This would be a wonderful present for those with an interest in local history.

The Story Of Chorlton-Cum-Hardy The Grocer of Christmas Past by Andrew Simpson
It’s that time of year again and it is difficult not to think about Christmas, not least because there will have been a steady drip feed of adverts, festive products and programmes from late November discussing when best to make the pudding, ice the cake, and how to prepare for the all important day. I have watched for the first reference to the event and usually it seems to slip in sometime just after the children have gone back to school. Of course it does get pushed under the radar by Halloween but once that is out of the way the Christmas cards, advent Buy Andrew calendars and Simpson’s book special cook “The Story of books will be Chorlton-Cumon the shelves Hardy” or visit him online at and there is chorltonhistory. no escaping blogspot.com/ what is to come.

Not that this is anything new. Back in “Back in 1906 1906 T.C. Whitaker’s T.C. Whitaker’s of of Beech Road had Beech Road had been preparing their customers for the been preparing coming festival from at their customers least early November. The windows were full for the coming of adverts for “CHOICE festival from NEW CURRANTS at least early AND SULTANAS [for] XMAS”and the boxes November” of Mincemeat, along with “CHOICE NEW FIGS, ALMONDS” as well as “CANDIED PEEL.” All of which brings me to the photograph of Mr Whitaker and staff outside the shop on the corner of Beech Road and Chorlton Green. Now I like this picture because it has so much to offer about life in Chorlton. First we have a date,
WWW.COMMUNITYINDEX.CO.UK
secondly it is possible to identify three of the four people in the picture and lastly there is that wonderful detail of all that the shop had to offer. Standing in front of the shop by the open door is Thomas who was 40 years old when the picture was taken and to his right is his son Charlie and away in the corner is Mr Fox who the caption tells us was about to become the manager of the Stanley Grove shop. Now it says something about the concentration of people around Chorlton Green that old Thomas Whittaker could feel it made business sense to open another shop just round the corner and later still open a store on Ivy Green Road. And like other grocery shops of the period Mr Whitaker adopted that simple approach of pile them high and sell them cheap. The windows are covered with products and adverts ranging from fruit to biscuits while outside hang those great sides of meat beside an assortment of brushes. But in that November of 1906 there was no escaping the coming festival which had by then pretty much acquired all the features we still have today. That said the actual holiday was counted in
days not weeks and for many this was still more a religious event that a commercial one. They would have made their way to one of our two parish churches along with a clutch of chapels and other churches past fields which were still being farmed. There may well have been few people who made their living from the land here in Chorlton in 1906 but there were still some and for them December could be a cruel and hard month with little work and what there was carried out in unpleasant conditions. So for those who want to wallow in that nostalgic Christmas card vision with its snow, stage coaches, and merry portly farmers here is an alternative. It comes from the diary entry for December 29th from H. Rider Haggard’s A Farmer’s Year, “this has been a miserable day, very wet and windy, one of the darkest of the year. Throughout its gloomy hours two ploughs have been going up the land [and] beneath the pall of slaty flying scud this morning was one of singular desolation.” Picture; from the Lloyd collection.

Chorlton Art Market
A huge success, thanks to your help! The first Chorlton Art Market took place on Saturday 2nd November, which also saw the unveiling of the first bench, purchased with some of the money raised from the Chorlton Revival Kickstarter campaign. The day proved to be a great success. As well as 25 traders selling their wonderful artwork and high quality handmade designs, we had a fantastic line up of musicians playing live throughout the day. A huge thank you to everyone who traded or sung for us, and also to everyone who came down to see the market. We are now very much looking forward to the next event on Saturday 7th December.

December In Your Garden by Katherine Watson I have been making a concerted effort to crank up my composting credentials in the last few weeks, having been rationed to a two-weekly grey bin pick up and a pocket sized plastic composter for the kitchen that will hold approximately three tea bags, four bags of forgotten about pea shoot salad and a dry half onion. Actually, it has been a very good thing because it has made me think much more carefully about, not only what I throw away, but also what I can turn into plant food for my garden. If you haven’t got one, you could think about putting a garden compost bin on your Christmas list and just to get you in the mood, here are a few things you could start composting over the festive period: ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ – perfectly okay to compost mistletoe for amorous worms to kiss themselves underneath and any other Christmas related ‘green’ paraphernalia such as wreaths, Christmas trees etc. as long as they are chopped up a bit. Wine corks can also be composted (but not plastic ones or screw tops) but the wine itself
If you haven’t got one, you could think about putting a garden compost bin on your Christmas list and just to get you in the mood, here are a few things you could start composting over the festive period... should always be subjected to our own bodily compost machines; ‘Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire’ – it’s also fine to compost nuts except walnut shells, as they can apparently be toxic to plants. Wood ash is good for the
pile but coal ash is less good as it may contain too many impurities; ‘Three French Hens’ – both egg shells and chicken poo (French or not) can join the compost heap and believe it not so can feathers even though they may take a while to rot down; ‘Last Christmas I gave you my Heart’ – not an offal lot to say about animal organs – best not to compost these. I couldn’t think of a Christmas song to link (however tenuously) to this last tip, but apparently the plastic wrappers from Quality Street sweets are compostable because they are made from cellulose derived from wood pulp, so all-in-all we can be set for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy composting New Year!

Meet Heather Describe your job: My position is quite varied and no day is the same. One day I can be doing the administration to make our new properties available, the next I can be helping cover in the office answering the phones and booking viewings. I also help with the weekly and monthly newsletters that we publish to all of our clients. This gives me the knowledge of what is going on in and around Chorlton and enables me to

What’s special about Chorlton as a place:
What are your hobbies and interests out of the wonderful world of JP & Brimelow:
There is always something going on for the local community and there is a friendly nature about the town. You also have the option of nice cafes, restaurants and bars and then the advantage of walking it all off around the Water Park.
Where’s your favourite restaurant or café in Chorlton: Olive & Thyme on Barlow Moor Road, it’s a stone’s throw away from the office and after working overseas for ten years the food
I like to go swimming a couple of times a week. I also like to have a full diary on the weekends catching up with friends and family and looking after my amazing three year old niece.

Chorlton Refurb host Home Eco-Reburbishment course Throughout October and November a quiet enlightenment has been taking place in a house on Keppel Road, as a group of South Manchester homeowners, attended Chorlton Refurb’s Home EcoRefurbishment course. They came to reduce their bills, be more comfortable in their homes and to do their bit against climate change. Students started by getting to grips with their energy consumption and heating systems before learning practical skills. Guided by Nick Parsons of Sustainable Building in Sheffield, the refurb virgins wrestled with expanding
foam and silicon sealant guns to fill cracks and gaps in the classroom. The focus of the course was led by the group’s needs and the sessions generated lively discussion as well as giving hands on practical experience. Most students lived in early 20th century solid brick homes which are notoriously hard to treat and expensive to heat. They were taught about wall, floor and roof insulation, moisture and ventilation. Already many of them have said how much just coming on the course has helped them to overcome difficulties in tackling their energy consumption, if only by forcing them to look at their bills

Chorlton Refurb began a few years ago as a group of residents meeting to discuss ways they could improve their homes’ energy efficiency. It’s now a fully constituted community group who last year successfully ran a Local Energy Assessment Fund (LEAF) project surveying local homes. A major finding was how big the obstacles are for homeowners to make the necessary changes. This Lottery funded pilot course aimed to give homeowners the confidence, either to carry out work themselves or to hire a contractor.
