No more will I sit in the Soap Opera ....a lament for another lost way of life If you have ever lived in a bed sit most probably you will also have sat and washed your clothes in the launderette. For me the two go together. Being single and on a low income meant my early years in Manchester were spent in one room in converted Victorian houses which were sad neglected and shabby versions of their former selves. If you were lucky the landlord would have redecorated the walls with wood chip and some neutral colour of emulsion, although in my case in one flat the original paper had just had an amateur coat of some watered down paint thrown over it. The delights of such living just went on. You shared the bathroom which was seldom cleaned, the whole house was always cold with a hint of damp and the hall always seemed full of junk mail and letters to residents who even the landlord had forgotten. So in the absence of a washing machine you went to the launderette. They could be a The Soap Opera, Beech Rd © Andrew Simpson
meeting place but all too often in my student days the place was empty and you washed alone, watching as the soap suds took over the porthole of a window which only confirmed you had used too much powder again. But I am being a bit unfair. Launderettes were on every high street and back road from the 50s onwards and in their way I suppose were part of that bright new post war future. No more sending the dirty clothes to the laundry now you could do it yourself with no fear that the stained underwear and socks with holes in would be the topic of conversations for the whole laundry over the tea break. Nor did you have to brave the municipal laundry which was fine if you were the adult but all so boring for a child of seven. These council run public laundries were a marvellous asset for anyone living in small terraced house where wash day could take over the whole house. Moreover they were a place to meet and talk. But again not if you were seven and had plans to play in the park.
Now all of this is because the launderette on Beech Road has closed. The last wash was just before Christmas and now the Soap Opera is no more. It has joined thousands of others who could not compete with cheap washing machines and an attitude which preferred that clothes should be washed in the privacy of one’s home. And that too chimes in with the trend for each member of the family to occupy themselves in a different room doing different things. So from a peak of twelve and half thousand outlets there are now fewer than 3,000. I remember talking about the demise of laundries with my friend Lawrence who had been told by the owner of a launderette that they would go the same way in the next decade. I should have seen it coming. First the one on Barlow Moor Road went and now ours on Beech Road. The Soap Opera had been the Maypole and must have seemed so thoroughly modern when it opened four decades ago but now no more. All of which leaves me with one thought, where will the bed sit residents go now to wash their clothes? for Chorlton’s Big Green Festival! The planning for this year's Chorlton's Big Green Festival is now in full swing and the first 'official' event of the year is just around the corner. Chorlton's Big Green Ceilidh will feature the fantastic Beech Band performing traditional folk tunes and keeping you entertained for the duration. Get your dancing shoes on and join us on for an evening of great music, some hearty pints of Guinness and help raise money for CBGF 2012. Chorlton's Big Green Ceilidh will take place on Saturday 11th February from 7.30pm at Chorlton Irish Club, 17 High Lane, Chorlton M21 9DJ. Due to the popularity of last year's Ceilidh, this year's event will be held in a larger room at the Irish Club which means even more room for your best Gay Gordon!
via the festival website (see below). There will be a limited number of tickets available on the door, on the night but based on last years turnout we would highly recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Chorlton's Big Green Festival is an annual celebration of sustainable living in Manchester which offers a vibrant mix of live music and performance, hands-on practical workshops, food and drink, arts and swaps, and much more. Best of all, entry to the festival is completely free! Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2012 will be held on Saturday 31st March at St Clements Church, Edge Lane, Chorlton, M21 9JF. More information about the event can be found on the Green Chorlton website: www.greenchorlton.org.uk

Book Reviews Freedom Jonathan Franzen At the heart of the novel is Patty Berglund. Success came early for Patty during college but she gave up a promising sporting career to create and care for her ‘perfect’ family. Walter is an extremely supportive husband to his stay at home wife. To the local neighbourhood, the Berglund’s are the ideal family with a wonderful future ahead. When Patty’s beloved teenage son decides to move in with his girlfriend the family unit begins to unravel and old resentments begin to surface. If the story doesn’t grab you from the start it’s definitely worth sticking with it. By page 50 I was well and truly hooked! The story is essentially about our desire for physical, emotional and spiritual freedoms. It serves as a warning about the danger of actually getting what you wish for.

The Sense of an Ending
I, Partridge: We Need to Talk About Alan
Julian Barnes Tony is in reflective mood due to a mysterious gift left to him in a will. What makes the gift even more mysterious is the person who has bequeathed it. This person met Tony briefly more than 40 years previously and has had no contact with him since. Tony delves back into cherished memories of school friendships, before the harsh realities of adult life hit home. Central to the story is the character of Veronica. She came into and out of Tony’s life at University but more than 40 years later has made a dramatic reappearance. Booker prize winners are always fantastic but often feel like a bit of a chore to wade through. What a refreshing change then to find a novel which is both easily readable and a worthy winner. It may well be the novella format which helps the pace and readability of the story but whatever it is I found this impossible to put down and read it within a few sittings.

by Steve Coogan, Armando Iannucci, Neil Gibbons and Rob Gibbons. Let’s face it, autobiographies by third-rate media figures are usually no good. The same goes for TV comedy tie-in books. But in real life, if not in his own fictional world, Alan Partridge remains a mark of quality. This is far better than it has any right to be, and weaves a satisfying comic novel out of the stray details of Partridge’s life as revealed across the BBC series. It’s an sprawling tale of fatherhood, failed marriage, hospital radio, career suicide (remember ‘monkey tennis’?) and the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre. As you’d expect, our hero’s gargantuan pomposity and facility for total self absorption accounts for most of the laughs – and there are plenty of those. The man’s a monster, but a detailed, three-dimensional creation in his own right. The result is genuinely compelling, and very, very funny.

February in your Garden In the bleak months of winter, the garden seems to become a space outside the window that is rarely looked at let alone ventured into, which has lead me to think about what a ‘Winter Garden’ might look like and what type of plants could be used to produce something a bit more interesting than the usual hedge of evergreen shrubs. The concept of Winter Gardens has a particular history, peaking in the Nineteenth century with the Victorian obsession with ‘nature’ and ‘spectacle’ and the construction of huge steel and glass buildings reminiscent of Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace and rolled out along the (then) fashionable coast towns of Margate, Blackpool, Bournemouth etc. These buildings functioned in a variety of pleasure-giving
ways, but a central element was always the palm houses featuring the exotic horticultural spoils of the - arguably dubious - activity of plant hunting. Perhaps a lesser-known example of such a building was built in Old Trafford as part of the botanical gardens founded in the 1830’s, to provide recreation for the fashionable residents of Stretford. Apparently the gardens were sited in Old Trafford on the advice of scientist John Dalton, the southwesterly wind protecting the area from the city’s airborne pollution. The complex was demolished in the late 1980s, and all that remains is the entrance gates, close to what is now the White City Retail Park. It’s probably not going to be very easy to recreate the Victorian winter garden unless you happen

by Katherine Watson to have a large conservatory and a porridge-pot purse, but here are some plants that can be used to sprinkle some frosty magic across the garden: evergreens with wintery interest include shrubs such as Rhododendron ‘Silver Edge’, Pieris ‘Flaming Silver’, Sarcococca confusa and herbaceous plants - Artemesia ‘Lambrook Silver’, Senecio cineraria ‘Silver Dust’ offset by the black grass Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’; wonderful white barked trees – Betula utilis jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’; and for comedy value the white winter stemmed bramble Rubus cockburnianus. Located in the heart of Chorlton, Craftelicious is a home to creating, eating and having lots of fun for all ages. Inspired by their own children’s craftiness, the husband and wife team opened the doors in July 2011 and have had such a positive response they now have even more exciting plans for the Craft Café.
It’s not all about craft though, Craftelicious have just launched their creperie menu which is the perfect accompaniment to their freshly ground coffee, loose-leaf tea and delicious handmade cakes. Whether crafting or not and wanting a tasty bite or in need of a laid back delicious crafternoon, there is something for everyone!
With activities ranging from ceramic painting, decopatch and now mosaic making available on a drop-in basis, along with more structured workshops for both children and adults. You cannot help but have fun, either in the Café or The Studio.
The family run business welcomes everyone with a warm smile with a passion for all things crafty, making themselves available to demonstrate activities for first-timers or share tips to ensure a rewarding experience.
The adult workshops last season included making a cushion cover, a fabric journal and textile jewellery making delivered by Craftelicious’ in house artist Maud Telastuo. Looking ahead to 2012 there are already a long list of activities planned, with all times and dates announced on the Craftelicious website. There will be some “Heart Crafts” taking place in February and “Mum and Me” workshops planned in March. Book a place on any of the workshops by the end of February and receive a 10% discount.
Here’s a flavour of the comments left in the feedback book:
Crafty tots, where things can get messy with different activity each week (Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10–11.30am) is aimed at pre-schoolers and makes a much anticipated return to The Studio in January. However, the biggest success so far has to be the parties; which are not just for children! Craftelicious have hosted baby showers (where guests make something for the baby (or baby’s room), hen-do’s (where all the guests have made decorations, keepsakes or favours for the big day) as well as those very popular work night out and team building activities. The feedback has been exceptionally positive with some groups returning several times.
“I really enjoyed coming here as a Birthday present…BRILLIANT service, food, art. Love it!” “The kids had great fun – nearly as much as the adults!! Will definitely be back.” Why not pop in and decide for yourselves?
A home to creating, eating and fun for all ages!
