Eating Well on a Budget

wenty pounds doesn’t go far these days. Well, not in my pocket. By my reckoning, twenty quid equals one and a bit Doctor Who DVDs, or a night out if I go home early - which I’m always happy to do if I’ve got a DVD to watch (unwanted Doctor Who and fine wines to the editorial address, please).

If, like me, you live on a tight budget, this never-ending recession will be hitting you hard; and if, like most, you have bills, taxes and bankers’ salaries to pay you’ll be only too aware how much the weekly outgoings impact on the weekly food budget - another notch on the proverbial belt. But should that be at the expense of our diet and, by implication, our health and wellbeing? No. It should not. Government cuts don’t have to mean cheap cuts of meat, or loitering in vain by the supermarket ‘bargain section’ ten minutes before closing - as I’ve only recently discovered. For some time I’ve been labouring under the misapprehension that while shopping at your local independents can only be a good thing, the state of my finances make it prohibitively expensive; that I’m doomed (short of winning the Health Lottery) to a life of priceddown, tasteless ready-meals and supermarket own brands. But it ain’t necessarily so. To put my presumption to

the test, I decided to run a little price comparison experiment on some of our local stores...

Take my vegetarian signature dish (see recipe opposite) as an example. A mixed bean and aubergine tagine (that’s a casserole where I come from), this inexpensive, nutritious and - dare I say it - delicious meal is not only good for feeding a ravenous family, it’s also great for entertaining friends. Not only that, but there’s often enough left over to blitz into soup or freeze for later. I bought the ingredients, bar the paprika and the oil, from the Unicorn Co-operative Grocery (a place I’ve long held to be out of my price range) for £8.02; pretty good value for a meal for four. Moreover, everything - even the tomato puree - was organic, adding to the flavour of the dish. To put that figure in context, I compared it to some of the big supermarkets. Much to my surprise, the same list of ingredients - none of which were organic - came in at £6.86 from Morrisons - a miniscule saving by anyone’s standards. Asda was the cheapest at £6.33, but factor in the cost of travel and it’s no value at all. Most expensive of

all was Tesco, which added up to £8.35. Every little helps? I don’t think so. “That’s all well and good,” I hear you say, “but that’s just one meal - what about the rest of the week?” OK. Let’s take a broader view...

Personally, it’s coffee and a cigarette, but for most people it’s the early morning fuel that

5 drives us to lunch. It might be the Full English that gets you going. Or some sugar-coated, chocolate malfunction with a ‘free’ plastic toy. Whatever your pleasure, breakfast can come at a hefty price. So how about porridge instead? Oats! Cheap as... well... oats. I know, I know, porridge is boring, the kids don’t like it, etc... Fair enough. But try this for size: throw a few sultanas into the mix, sprinkle with cinnamon and a drizzle of honey at the end, and see what your kids think. I suppose what I’m saying is this: twenty pounds, by no

means a fortune, can stretch a long way when it has to. It goes even further when it’s spent on ingredients and not tasteless junk food with god-knows-what in it. Horsemeat in your beef burger, anyone? No thank you. With a bit more forethought and a bit more effort, I’ve not only made my food budget last longer - with the added satisfaction of supporting my local independents - but I’ve somehow managed to improve my diet. No mean feat for a man like me. So if you ever catch me by a so-called bargain bin again, do me a flavour...

Leon’s Mixed Bean and Aubergine Tagine With Baked Mushroom Rice (serves 4)

For the Tagine you will need :

1 aubergine, cut into chunks 1 courgette, sliced 1 tin (240g) mixed beans in water, drained 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped 1-2 fresh red chillies, seeded and chopped 1 onion, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp tomato puree 1 tsp paprika 300ml vegetable stock 2 bay leaves 75ml olive oil Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions :

1) Heat 4tbsp of the oil in a frying pan or wok. Pat the aubergine dry, then add to the oil and cook for 5 minutes. Remove and set aside. 2) Add remaining oil to the pan and fry the onions until softened. Add the crushed garlic and chopped chillies and cook for a further five minutes, stirring frequently. 3) Transfer to a large tagine or casserole dish with the cooked aubergine. 4) Add the remaining ingredients, season to taste, cover and cook in the oven at 160c/Gas 3 for 1 hour.

For the Baked Rice you will need : 350g long grain rice

250g chestnut mushrooms, roughly chopped 1 onion, thinly sliced 600ml vegetable stock (or 500ml plus a glass of white wine) 4tbsp vegetable oil Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions :

1) Heat the oil in a roasting pan on the stove and add the onion. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until softened but not browned. 2) Add the rice and fry for another 2 minutes, then add the mushrooms and stir through. 3) Add the stock, season to taste, cover and bake in the oven at 160c/gas 3 for 30 to 40 minutes.

The story of

Hough End Aerodrome

first came across Hough End Aerodrome while reading articles by Nora Templar who lived at Dog House Farm for 47 years.

She remembered “the landing of the first small aeroplane in the fields, the forerunner of many between 1916 and 1918. Manchester’s first aerodrome was built by the Government at Hough End. The first planes were delivered by train. Pilots came in low over the Dog House chimneys and waved from their Avro’s and Handley Pages.” The aerodrome was on what is now Hough End Playing Fields and was opened in May 1918 by the War Department for the assembly and delivery of aircraft to the RAF. The site had been chosen by partly because this was still open farmland and also because of the railway line which meant the aircraft could be transported direct from factories in Newton Heath and Stockport to the airfield and assembled on site. After the war it became a civilian airfield and from 1922 flew a service down to Croydon Airport near London, and as Nora remembered was used by aircraft competing in the King’s Cup Race air races in 1922 and 1923. “There were also a number of flying displays at the aerodrome and the Lancashire Aero Club, the oldest flying club in Britain, was formed at and operated from Alexandra

Park until 1924, when it moved to Woodford Aerodrome.” But the aerodrome closed in 1924. Like our brick works it had been given a set life by the Egerton estate who leased the land on condition that it ceased being used five years after the end of the war. So on August 24th 1924 the place closed and the hangers and workshops were demolished. Today nothing remains save two plaques recording the presence of the aerodrome. One in the sports pavilion at Hough End Playing Fields and the other in the grounds of No. 184 (South Manchester) Squadron, Air Cadets in Hough End Crescent. Almost as soon as civilian aircraft began using aerodrome there was a debate about whether it should be taken over by Manchester Corporation. Much was made of

its closeness to the city centre and the boost it could give to the economy. Birmingham Council had already bought the West Bromwich Aerodrome and this was a 40 minute car ride from the centre compared to just the ten minutes it would take to get to Albert Square. There was also a strong belief that the Air Ministry would sell for a very low price. But reading the newspaper reports of the period there is a sense that it was still not as successful

9 as it could be. One journalist commented that “the aerodrome has known many vicissitudes. The travellers on the railway between Manchester and Withington have seen it alternate between a place of stirring activity during and just after the war and a place of flat desolation untroubled by the whirr of a single propeller, the great sliding doors of the hangars firmly closed, the weather gauges streaming out in indication of breezes that interested no one. Now and then awakened by the measure activity of a civilian service or its pulse has been quickened to a very swift beat by it being a station for the round Britain air Race.” Part of the problem I suspect was just the cost of flying. A

flight from Manchester to Paris would shave six to seven hours off the journey by rail and channel crossing but the fare would be 9 guineas making it a third more expensive than the conventional trip. Moreover this assumed that the service had been subsidised “by £10,000 to cover the installation and inauguration of a service.” Which even then might as one newspaper reported only be used by businessmen “whose time is worth money, earns say £2000 a year, which is £2 an hour, [who would] save six hours and so make between £8 and £9 on the deal.” The case became even more important with the development of the surrounding area for housing. Soon the argument ran there

would not be enough land for an airport. The Egerton estate appeared to view with favour a Corporation buy up and promised to hold off selling the land till a decision could be made. But in the event there was no Corporation buy out and by the terms of the original lease agreement all flying use stopped five years after the war’s end and on September 24th 1924 all the buildings and power plant were put up for auction including nine hangars and other buildings, two generators, cables electric fittings, boilers, heating piping, water piping, baths, wash basins, lavatory fittings and other items.” Pictures from the Lloyd Collection

any of us think year-on-year about how our gardens could become more wildlife friendly and February seems like the ideal time to build this into our planning. There are a few vague statements that populate the back of our minds about bee colonies being threatened and the need to leave a bit of mess in the garden for overwintering insects and animals, but I doubt many of us actually know a great deal more than that. I certainly didn’t until I read a couple of articles by accident. One was a report from the UN environmental programme that highlighted the fact that 71% of crops providing 90% of food worldwide are bee pollinated (which is quite amazing) and another from the British Bee Keepers Association (BBKA) which looked at the dramatic fall in honey yield in Britain during 2012. Taken together, these facts are quite worrying – the BBKA are currently monitoring whether the rain and cold of the summer last year has hampered the normal process of queen

bee production and the affect on winter colony survival levels. Obviously there isn’t a great deal we can do about our weather but there may be a few small things we could do to help in our gardens. If you’re stuck for a present for someone, you could always ‘adopt a beehive’ (www. adoptabeehive.co.uk) which is a scheme to raise funds for research and education into good bee husbandry. Alternatively, there are a whole range of everyday plants that are ‘Bee Friendly’ – i.e. rich in pollen and nectar, that might encourage bees into

our gardens (The British Bee Keeping Association website has a full list of bee friendly plants). For example, many of us know that the Buddleja is good for butterflies and bees (its common name being the ‘Butterfly Bush’), but perhaps think about trying a different variety such as Buddleja x weyeriana ‘Moonlight’, with its pastel pom-pom threaded stems. It might also be worth thinking about winter flowering plants such as the climber Clematis cirrhosa, winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) or the sweet smelling Viburnum x bodnantense. Plenty to keep you buzzy at the start of the growing season.

Written using a mixture of letters and emails, this hilarious commentary on white middle class America is fantastic. The story focuses on the need to fit in and conform to the norm. Bree, the 15 year old narrator is about to leave her comfy if slightly unconventional school for her mother’s old boarding school halfway across the country. Despite her chaotic and somewhat dysfunctional family life Bree is a bit of a genius in the making. Bernadette, Bree’s mother is considered odd and crazy by the other parents at the school. She never joins in with school activities and tries her best to avoid contact with the other parents, much to the disgust of Audrey;

head of the Galer Street PTA. Bernadette has turned herself into a neurotic snobbish recluse who refuses to engage with the little people! Bernadette wasn’t always like this and as her present slowly begins to unravel we discover how and why this transformation occurred. Maria Semple has been a script writer for American comedies for years. This skill is obvious in the way she has created such recognisably comic characters that are so easy to laugh at but love at the same time. Unfortunately only available as a hardback at the moment, the paperback is due in July. Go on treat yourself to a book Jonathan Franzen “tore through with Heedless Pleasure”!

Following on from Secret River, this carries on the story of a lowly Thames boatman transported to Australia for stealing. Sarah Thornhill is the youngest daughter of William and is being groomed to marry well and become a proper young lady. Sarah is part of a wellrespected family with a large household and plenty of money. She loves her father and has no worries apart from a stepmother who is determined to turn the Thornhill girls into genteel young ladies. However, society is already divided into two unspoken categories. There are those who came as free men and women and then there are those such as William, Sarah’s father. Despite many years of respectability and wealth William will always be branded as one of those who came in chains and worked for

his freedom. Sarah is unaware of yet another prejudice; against those settlers of mixed race. The hatred toward these people seems almost worse than that towards the aborigine communities. estled away above the former martial arts shop in the heart of Chorlton is a new community arts centre. Recently established - it’s evolving with the ideas of local talent.

Its founders, Kim and Rebecca envisioned a creative hub where artists, performers, musicians, and creative people from the area can come together and re-energise the local arts scene. The ethos is to make arts ideas happen and include everyone; to provide a platform and funding for it. It’s about imagining events, festivals, artworks, fundraisers and live events. And this little idea is taking on a life of its own. It has found such a following in the short time it’s been open that fresh

partnerships, projects and plans for public events are already underway. For those who want to get involved and learn a skill, drop in classes are already happening. They include, alternative art lessons, circus skills, DSLR photography, group guitar lessons, baby massage, hula-hooping, scriptwriting. Childrens’ after schools clubs have also been set up. If you already teach the rates are low with facilities like cushioned flooring for dance and state of the art digital recording for performance. Rugby Park get their reward

roughton Park RUFC were the grateful recipients of a defribillator which was presented to them by Ian Procter-Dow from the North West Ambulance Service.

It was provided by a generous donation from the family of young student Sammy Alkhalaf who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Manchester University’s RL team on one of Park’s pitches at Hough End last Spring. Sammy, 20, collapsed during play and his colleagues rushed

over to a neighbouring pitch to seek the help of Park physio Ruth Bradley. Ruth said:” With the help of the referee and Park officials we were able to administer CPR and mouth-to-mouth to keep him alive and resuscitate him four times until the paramedics arrived and took him to the MRI. “He has made a good recovery with the help of a pacemaker implant.

“To receive the defribillator for the club is a great boost and we have trained 12 of our staff

Josh makes his mark on Sports View Personality destined for county honours after dropping his handicap to five during the past 12 months.

The 13-year-old is a junior member at both Didsbury and Chorlton Golf Clubs and looks

His father James is the highly respected professional at Chorlton where he has set up the very successful Manchester Golf Performance Centre. James when a junior member at Didsbury, where his dad Sam is also a long-standing member and his brother Ben also won county honours, was Cheshire’s

youngest-ever player at the age of 16 to win full county colours and Josh is certainly following in his father’s footsteps. During the past season Josh won junior ‘majors’ at both Chorlton and Didsbury and he has had a great example to follow at Chorlton where junior Captain Cameron Massey, a former student at St Anthony’s HS, Stretford, has played for England u18’s and Cheshire first team in 2012 to show the great work being done for junior golf in the south Manchester clubs. James said: “The TV crew came down to Chorlton to film Josh and all of the family and members of the club are very proud of him.”

horlton judo coach Steve Pullen MBE was delighted to be given the award as Greater Manchester’s ‘Unsung Hero’ at a glittering ceremony staged at The Point at Lancashire CC. For his outstanding work in his sport in Trafford Steve was put forward for the GM finals as Trafford’s Unsung Hero and received his award from man United executive David Gill in front of an assembly of over

500 sporting stars.

These included Olympic and Paralympic medal winners Jade Jones, David Weir MBE, Etienne Stott, Nicola White and Lutala Muhamed. As well as his framed certificate Steve also won some VIP tickets for a Man United match of his choice. Steve said: “It was superb to receive such an award in front of a galaxy of stars but for me the award was in recognition of the other volunteers in the

horltonians FC are one of the biggest open age Saturday afternoon football clubs in the region. They are based at the Police Club at Hough End and were founded in the 1930’s by old boys of Chorlton Grammar School.

They field six teams each Saturday in the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL with the first team enjoying life in the Premier division and their
