On Your Bike Summer’s here (apologies if it’s not) and I guess it’s time I dusted down my rusty old bike and hit the kerbs again. Get some exercise. And what better way to do that than to feel a warm breeze on your face as you whizz past all those joggers in their funny looking Lycra getup? Sorry joggers, but some of you put me in mind of extras from a camp science fiction show. Buck Rogers anyone?
No, pedal-power, that’s the thing. Not only is cycling an effective form of low impact exercise (improving aerobic fitness and reducing the risk of coronary heart disease), but it’s good for the environment too. Recent statistics show that 50% of all journeys made in the UK are two miles or less, which most of us can achieve on foot or by bicycle rather than driving; while Manchester Friends of the Earth are keen to encourage us to cycle to work, and not add to an already polluted atmosphere. Don’t panic. I’m not getting on my soapbox. Truth is, my bike spends much of the year reared up on its back wheel, squeezed into the hallway cupboard. Besides, I’ve got no lights, the steering is off and the brakes are a wee bit dodgy. And my bike’s not much better. But in summertime, like any mad dog or Englishman, I grab at the chance to get out and about. Not so much on the roads, you understand; I’m nervous in heavy traffic, not fond of breathing car fumes, and being screamed at by irate, gasguzzling idiots isn’t my idea of fun. But I’m lucky enough to live on the edge of Mersey valley, with its neighbouring nature reserves, which amounts to a good stretch in either direction, not a traffic-light in sight. For the city-dwelling two-wheeler who rarely gets out to the sticks, it’s something of a godsend. Try it. Not only is it a cost efficient day out, but it’s a great way to bring the whole family together. Don’t have bikes for all the family? No problem. Arek Bartniczak opened The Bike Barn, opposite Jackson’s Boat pub on Rifle Road, two years ago. Offering repairs and bike hire from Wednesday through to Sunday (10am to 6pm), Arek’s mission is simple: “I want to get the whole family out cycling. We can provide all the equipment you’ll need: child seats, helmets, trailers, bikes for all ages - and children under five go free.” Not only that, but Arek can also provide family-friendly cycle routes, with places of local interest and natural beauty along the way to engage your little ones or simply stop for a picnic. What more could you ask for?
Leon Horton
So go on. Do your heart a favour. Do the planet a favour. Do your wallet a favour. And get on your bikes and ride.

A Slice of Rural Chorlton Today I decided to take a walk along one of the old field boundaries. But of course as you would expect I have chosen to take the journey sometime in the summer of 1845. Now this is not as difficult as it would seem and I shall not slide into some fanciful romantic recreation of an idyllic rural spot. The walk is based on the maps and records of the time, and I want to start with an advert. It is a little later than 1845, well actually twenty-one years to be exact but it is a good starting point, because in that year the five cottages and land belonging to Charles Bracegirdle were put up for auction. It has much to tell us for not only do we have the name of the owner, but also those of the tenants, some of whom had been here in the summer of my walk, and we know their occupations, the rents they paid, and from all this something of what the cottages were like. But all of that is for later. The summer of 1845 was mixed. The earlier part of the year had been cold with “heavy snow falls in March and despite a warm April May had been cold and dull. June by contrast was fine, but July brought thunderstorms and August was dull cloudy and wet. Only with September and harvest time did things improve, and the rest of autumn was mild and fairly dry.”* So this is not the most promising of times to walk a field boundary.
Andrew Simpson
We are on the eastern edge of Oswald Field, which today is that piece of open land on the corner of Oswald Road looking north and west towards Claridge Road. We know it as Oswald Field, earlier it went by the name of Oswald Croft and by the early 20th century was part of Oswald Lane, which in those days ran from Oswald Road down to Manchester Road. And for most of that century it was a narrow little road bounded the backyards of Claridge Road and Fielden Terrace.
the site of the library and the main road out of the township to Manchester. Then as now it would have been busy with farmers and market gardeners travelling into the city with food for the markets and itinerant traders and carriers arriving with goods to sell or orders to deliver. There would also have been that Sunday trade, escaping the confines of industrial Manchester just 4 miles away for a walk with the family in the countryside or visiting our beer shops, pubs and hotels.
But in the summer of 1845 the lane was in the heart of Chorlton countryside. Our five cottages stood on the eastern side of the boundary, fairly close to what is now Oswald Road. In front of them a line of trees only partly obscured views across open land towards the Botanic Gardens, the Duke’s Canal and Trafford.
Their first port of call might well have been the old Royal Oak, or the beer shop of Mrs Leech, roughly I think where Manchester Road joins the modern Wilbraham Road. All of which has taken us away from our original field boundary and so is perhaps a good time to stop.
All around them there were small orchards and woodland, but for the Aldcroft and Barret families who had young children I guess it would have been the ponds which preoccupied them. There were plenty of these. Most were the result of digging for marl and clay and within just a short walk there were sixteen of varying size and I guess depth. Some like the large one directly opposite was described as a pond while others were marked as Marl Pits.** Despite the evidence of the marl and clay diggings this was mostly meadow and pasture land and like the rest of the township was rented by a number of different tenant farmers and market gardeners. So if we had followed the boundary away from the cottages it would have brought us to Red Gates Farm which today is
*Stratton, J.M, Agricultural Records, 1969 **the pond was on that southern side of Oswald Road, now occupied by the six semi detached houses, while the marl pits are now under Oswald Road school.

Chorlton-cum-Hardy, The Story
As Historian Andrew Simpson says “I tell the Stories and Peter Paints the Pictures”, and so it has been for as long as I can remember. We have been very fortunate in that we have time to pursue the loves in our life, one of them being Chorlton. And what better opportunity could we have, to tell a story about Chorlton, than when we were approached by McCarthy & Stone
builders of retirement homes, offering us the use of the 80m of Hoardings that surround the site that once was Cosgrove Hall. Currently with exhibitions at 6 sites around Chorlton, as part of our GLAD TO BE IN CHORLTON History Trail and looking for a nucleus to augment the venues, this opportunity came at just the right time.

Here we have the Story of Chorlton set out on a series of panels. There will be stories by Andrew interspersed by sepia photos, and my paintings of present day Chorlton. The story will unfold from the roots of Chorlton at the Horse and Jockey to modern day Chorlton, dwelling on the history surrounding Wilbraham Road and terminating at the library and the old Cosgrove Hall site. All in all we have a backdrop which allows us to be informative and creative in what we hope will be just the beginning of the never ending Story of Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Live Music Review Open Mic Night
June 6th, Wednesdays at Escape Bar, Chorlton There’s a regular weekly Open Mic Night at Escape Bar in Chorlton – I thought I’d pay a visit. Refurbished over a year ago; it’s much improved. The previous lack of character and crammed in sofas, used to beckon some form of escape. No pun. It has now adopted a new style that has taken advantage of its elongated space. The decor consists of art produced by local Chorltonians, European film posters and sixties inspired furniture; creating a more inviting, low lit and calmer ambiance. Its folky, arty approach creates an ideal spot to either chat amongst friends whilst listening to Wild Beasts or attend a gig. I decided to do the latter. I arrive and am soon accompanied by the very cool looking Open Mic Night host (Gib) who informs me after he has eaten his burger and chips he will set the ball rolling. He kindly offers me a chip doused in paprika. Strange; but it works. He introduces himself with a mumble and within minutes I’m tapping along to his John Lennon/Bob Dylan sounding vocals. and eager looking locals I feel like I am chilling out at a friends house. It’s hard to not be impressed with his voice and absorbing, quirky lyrics. He is obviously admired by the audience as he receives a very positive round of applause and a few slaps on the back. During a break I head to the bar where I receive a free drink from the friendly bar man. He informs me that he has installed the lighting for the evening. I must say I am impressed with this; the colourful spots and shapes defiantly pump up the psychedelic laid back vibe. I didn’t hear much of an introduction from the following act; two young lads, one with a harmonica the other with an electric guitar. They start with two covers; initially a version of “Use Me” by Bill Withers followed by “Fallin’ by Alicia Keys. Wow. I did not expect that at all. I am immediately intrigued. The singer then introduces us to a song he wrote “whilst on a Mega Bus” called “Old Medicine”. They take on a bluesy, simplebut-impressive tone as the singer offers an incredibly unique, strong, deep and mature voice for his age whilst the other plays the harmonica with impeccable timing. Their
lyrics are occasionally amusing but heartfelt and very well written. It was refreshing to see this young duo sing songs with such an old style of music. The harmonica solos were breath taking and it was clear as daylight (not on a typical Manchester day) that they adored their music. As they finished I wondered if I was the only one scraping my jaw off the floor; clearly not as they seemed taken a back by the cheers of “woos!” and “yehs!”. These are an absolute must see; they’re unpredictable and surprisingly unnamed; making them a refreshingly unpretentious duo. I asked how long they had been together, how many gigs had they done and if they have a Myspace page. They replied “Four months, second gig and no we don’t”. What I did find out though is that they go by the names of Jimmy Lynch and Liam Ward. I can’t emphasis enough how many other talented musicians go there. These artists need to be heard! Chorlton Philosophy Group How are you? What time is it? Where are you? How much is it? What’s the weather like? Are you going to the pub? These are the usual, everyday kind of questions that we ask of others and ourselves. We need these kinds of practical questions to organise our lives. But history suggests that sometimes we need to ask more fundamental questions: questions about human nature, about knowledge, about values, about beliefs. These are the kind of questions with which philosophy is concerned. Questions of this kind tend not to have simple answers or even any answers at all, but thinking and talking about them can enlarge our understanding of ourselves
and the universe in which we exist.
The philosopher Immanuel Kant said that, “The business of philosophy is not to give to rules, but to analyse the private judgements of common reason.” The aim, then, is to question some of our basic assumptions. How do we know that what we perceive is reality? Do we really have free will? Can freedom and justice be reconciled? What is consciousness? Philosophy is an approach to knowledge. It does not always demand the kinds of evidence that scientists need but its propositions have to be supported by logical argument. Although many great philosophers have had religious beliefs, they have relied on reason rather than faith in presenting their ideas. Philosophy has been seen a rather remote and abstract discipline but recently attempts have been made to bring it out of the rarefied world of academia and into more accessible and congenial settings. And what could be more accessible and congenial than your local pub. Philosophy in Pubs, which is partly based on the Cafe Philosophique movement in Paris, began eleven years ago and has since spread to many cities in the United Kingdom. Radio 4 ran a series of programmes based on the format employed
Steve Cox
by Philosophy in Pubs. This format involves groups of interested people gathering together, in licensed premises, to discuss issues in a relatively free and easy manner. Chorlton has just such a group. The Chorlton Philosophy Group first met in October 2010 and is based in the Lloyds pub. Chorlton Philosophy Group operates in a welcoming, informal and democratic manner. One or two of the members have academic qualifications in philosophy but most could best be described as enthusiastic amateurs who simply want to engage with broad concerns about the human condition and the nature of the world we inhabit. The general approach is not one of chalk and talk, indeed lectures are positively frowned upon. The topics discussed are chosen by individual members of the group who are then invited to introduce the subject
11 by means of a particular stimulus. The stimulus may take the form of words on paper but it could also be an image, a piece of music or an actual object. The members then divide into small groups to discuss the stimulus and formulate some relevant questions. These questions are laid out for all to see and a vote then takes place to select the question that the group as a whole will consider. This approach invariably results in a lively debate with everyone able to make a contribution. Topics which the Chorlton Philosophy Group have discussed recently include memory, time, beauty, ownership, identity, apathy and optimism. The meetings
are open to anyone and there is no compulsion to lead a topic or indeed to say anything, you can simply sit back, have a drink and listen to the arguments. It’s possible that the question, ‘Are you going to the pub?’
will turn out to have a whole new meaning. Chorlton Philosophy Group meets every Tuesday, at 7.30pm upstairs in the Lloyds pub on Wilbraham Road.

Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop Pigeon English Stephen Kelman This moving and powerful novel really packs a punch for such a relatively short book. The story is narrated by 11 year old Harrison, recently arrived from Ghana. The story begins with the murder of a local schoolboy who Hari feels he had a connection with. Hari’s world is one of gangs and violence on an almost daily basis. The one bright spot in his world is a pigeon who comes to visit his balcony and who Hari believes is some kind of good spirit. The story is told using Hari’s actual speech so takes a bit of getting used to. This actually ends up adding so much to the atmosphere and poignancy of the book. Shortlisted for the 2011 Booker prize, it’s well deserving of the praise heaped on it.
Bring up The Bodies Hilary Mantel This is the second part of a trilogy dedicated to the story of Thomas Cromwell, the right hand man to Henry the Eighth. Ann Boleyn is now Queen and has already produced one child, shame it’s only a girl! The king’s impatience to have a legitimate male heir has begun to take its toll on the marriage. Thomas Cromwell is once again at the centre of things. Ever the master of spin he is forced to plan and negotiate away to keep the king and all hangers on as happy as can be. When Henry begins to show interest in a certain Jane Seymour, Cromwell is caught in an unenviable position of wooing a potential new Queen without getting his head chopped off at the behest of the old one. This second novel has been well worth the 2 year wait. Hilary Mantel is so skilful at filling in the missing bits between documented historical events. I’m sure the key historical facts are correct but what really counts is her fantastic ability to create such great stories.
Solomon Crocodile Catherine Rayner
THEY lurk, they leap, they can even bite, they just love to make noise and cause trouble. Toddlers, that is. Which might be why they love crocodiles so much: it’s a kinship thing. Solomon is very much a toddler in crocodile form. He causes constant mayhem on the banks of the river, and the other animals call him a pest. At heart, though, he just wants to have fun, and what he really needs is a playmate. This is sweet, delightful stuff that starts out being about snappy menacing ends up being about the joys of friendship. Rayner (Sylvia and Bird, Ernest) is a dab hand at investing animal characters with loveable personalities, full of character and charm, without descending into gooey fluffiness. Little readers are bound to thrill at Solomon’s naughty antics, and cheer when things finally work out for him. It’s a beautifully judged and very endearing little picture book. Carlton Fridays Come Alive Mike Wolfe
“Use it or lose it” is the uncompromising message from a group of Whalley Range residents anxious to save a local landmark from the fate that has recently overtaken a number of South Manchester social clubs. The Carlton Club was set up a hundred years ago in one of the finest houses in the area on tree lined Carlton Road. Originally a “gentleman’s club” it was purchased by a group of local gents who wanted somewhere to be the social hub of their new estate. Its grand interior was complimented by terraces and bowling greens and it apparently became the focus of social activities for the wild times of the twenties and thirties. Like many similar suburban clubs, the history since the Second World War has been one of change and decline. There have been exceptions to this downward spiral, the most notable of which is Home On The Range (HOTR) which is a night of soul, funk and twisted disco music DJ’d by Matt Worden, Neil Turton and Tome Cole on the last Friday of the month. HOTR has been going for 8 years and regularly attracts hundreds of dancers to an urban night that is only a stroll from home. Stirred by the closure of venues like The Chorlton Conservative Club and the Old Trafford Tennis Club, Matt and Neil have
brought together a group of local residents to form the Carlton Collective. The aim of the collective is to ensure that the Club reinvents itself for its next century.
of late. Alan Dawson, Chair of the club management committee agrees that funds to invest in maintenance and improvement have been short as membership has fallen and costs have risen.
“This Club really is our inheritance. It could be the heart of the community. If we don`t go out and use it then it will become unsustainable and it will be gone forever. Walking to the Carlton Club and meeting with friends can feel like the best night in you have ever had. Playing bowls with the children certainly beats watching telly.” Says Neil from the Collective.
The collective’s aim is to get as many new events happening at the club as possible and thus to increase bar takings and membership. They are now putting together a programme of events throughout the week which will include a regular live music night, weekly poker/ games, performance poetry, and Zumba classes.
In truth, even the greatest fans of the club have to admit that it has got a bit scruffy and unloved
The Collective wants to ensure that Friday night will always be a big one at The Carlton. The new programme started with a bang with Afro Sonido an Afro-beat and Latin club night on Friday 15th June and the second Friday of the month thereafter (13th July etc). There will be a big bag of fun cabaret night on Friday 20th July and Cabaret will return on every third Friday of the month. With HOTR on the last Friday of the month, Julie McCarthy
17 from the Collective confirmed that “there’s always something good on a Friday!” The collective is pleased with its fund raising events. HOTR raised £400 last month, with more fundraising events planned for the future. The collective will also be organising a community clear up day on Saturday 30th June from 10 am – 4 pm. Coordinator of the day, Joy Wales said “Everybody is invited to come along; we will demonstrate that cleaning and gardening at The Carlton is a lot more fun than doing it at home!” (Please e-mail Joy.Wales@mhsc.nhs.uk. if you want to come). Although called a private members club, the committee stress that anyone can come in for a drink and that prospective members will be particularly warmly welcomed. The bar is open from 8pm every night and everyone is most welcome to come along, have a look and join in. Now is the time to get involved and ensure that, when the history of The Carlton is written, its second century will be even more energetic, bohemian and edgy than the first. Later Living is safer and more secure with McCarthy & Stone McCarthy & Stone can offer older homebuyers a way of life that means there is less to worry about. We build our developments with an abundance of security features to minimise the risk of crime. Each apartment is fitted with a smoke and intruder alarm. There’s also a security TV camera at the main entrance. When someone calls, residents can see who’s there before they let them in simply by switching channels on their TV set.
Another reassuring presence is the House Manager, who looks after the general running of the development and acts as a good neighbour to the residents. In case of personal emergency, residents know they can rely on the 24-hour emergency call system, which is installed throughout the development. To start enjoying a McCarthy & Stone lifestyle give us a call.
Having other like minded people living in the same building adds to the feeling of safety and social activities in the residents’ lounge creates a sense of community.

July in your Garden Using water in the garden has gone in and out of fashion, but it has been suggested that we have lost thousands of ponds from gardens and countryside in the last one hundred years due to farming techniques, popularity and maintenance issues. However, having water in the garden is starting to become popular again mainly due to the rallying cry of conservationists and garden makers keen to preserve (or create) habitats for a range of wildlife and insects. So following on from a long tradition of ‘natural’ representations of water, made popular in China as a form of ‘Shan Shui’ (outdoor Feng Shui) and adopted on a very large scale in England during the landscape movement of the 1700’s, we are being encouraged to create our own little oases in the form of a wildlife pond.
A pond can attract more variety of wildlife than any other single feature in the garden. If you can do without fish (and the accompanying, ubiquitous plastic heron), a wildlife pond can provide a breeding space for frogs and toads as well as a habitat for a host of other creatures, from water snails to pondskaters. You might even be lucky enough to see damselflies and dragonflies – such as the Common Darter, Sympetrum striolatum or the Azure Damselfly, Coenagrion puella (“Prehistoric bedragoned times, Crawl that darkness with Latin names…”). Opinions differ as to how big the pond should be but there is a general consensus that your
by Katherine Watson
pond should be at least 70-80cm deep at some point in order to prevent total freezing and therefore protecting wildlife over winter. Creating a shallow area and at least one sloping side allows birds to bathe, hedgehogs to drink, and amphibians like frogs to get in and out of the pond easily. A range of depths is recommended for a good variety of planting. Deep-water aquatics (such as Nymphaea - the Water Lily) have their roots in water that is 45cm (18in) or more with their leaves standing out above the water or floating on the surface. Marginal plants grow in the shallow water around the edge of a pond in planting baskets standing submerged in water. Submerged aquatics live completely under water including the useful oxygenator Lagarosiphon major (which also goes by the less impressive common name – Pondweed) and free-floating plants drift about on the surface of the pond with their roots dangling in the water. Examples include another popular oxygenator Stratiotes aloides (Water Soldier) that marches and multiplies through the water at an incredible rate. Both the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (wwt.org.uk) and the RSPB (rspb.org.uk) provide useful lists of pond plants to avoid. If you don’t have oodles of space, then a smaller area or small containers may still be useful to wildlife. Katherine Watson, Fat Grass Garden Designs

JP & Brimelow
Welcome to Life in Chorlton The long, hot summer that often seems to drift lazily into September and October, is a great time to be moving home. It’s warmer, brighter, gardens look better and people tend to be more cheery. That means that everyone else’s homes are looking better too, so its no time to be relaxing and expecting the sunny weather to do all the hard work by putting people in a buying mood, it’s a great time to give your home a real lift.
I look at ways in which Chorlton-Cum-Hardy can help in the selling and buying process by attracting potential relocating buyers, families and professionals into the area. When the sun comes out the desire to spend more time outdoors, so I visit local shops for ideas, I cover topics of moving house and gardening tips in the summer. Enjoy this bright & breezy issue and I look forward to assisting you in your next home.

Gardening
Wise with Water! If you are selling your home in the summer months then it is even more important to keep your garden looking at its best while at the same time not wasting water. Lawns especially can suffer if it doesn’t rain and pots, that you have used to make the front of your home look inviting to buyers, will need to be kept in peak condition too.
Install a water butt Installing a water butt in your garden is easy, and quite inexpensive. Thousands of litres of rainwater fall on the average roof every year. Collect it in a water butt and use it on your garden. It’s better for your lawn and plants than tap water.
When watering the garden: • use a watering can instead of a hose • if you do use a hose, use a trigger to control the flow • water early in the morning or late at night so that water doesn’t evaporate in the heat of the day before it can reach the roots • weed regularly to make sure that watering helps plants and not weeds Do remember that these are the months to really enjoy your garden after the hard work of the Spring. So sit back and relax with a glass of something cold and enjoy what, hopefully, will be a fantastic summer and early autumn. If you’re not the naturally green fingered type, take a trip to Chorlton Nursery. Tucked away down an alley in a quiet back-water of Chorlton, lies this hidden gem. You’ll find friendly, helpful and expert advice. Stocking over 600 varieties of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, alpines, heathers, bulbs, climbers, roses, conifers, and cottage garden plants. A delight to wander round, staff can help you choose the perfect plants for your garden. It’s a lovely little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life. visit www.chorltonnursery.com

Moving House
....in an Eng lish Summer Moving House can be a special kind of torture at the best of times, and our beautiful English summers reserve their own special ‘add-ons’ to both the selling period and the moving out day. When it comes to moving there are positives and negatives with summer weather. On the plus side it means you air your home by opening windows and letting light in. Getting things packed up and ready to move is far less stressful when the sun is shining.
Al Fresco The Barbakan Delicatessen has a lovely relaxed dining terrace where you can enjoy coffee, tea, juice or a smoothie with your favourite snack from the deli or linger for longer whilst the removals are packing up and you can watch the world go by. “What can I say about Village Dry Cleaners? Just excellent! Amir, who owns the business, goes above and beyond what is expected and I can whole heartedly recommend his services. I run a vintage inspired bridal boutique in the heart of West Didsbury. As we stock highend dresses with sometimes challenging silks and fabrics to clean, we’re always amazed at how Amir manages to spruce up our dresses. I recommend his services to all our brides. He’s truly excellent at what he does and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to fabric – the best dry cleaners in the north, without a doubt!” Nikki Graeme Owner, The White Closet, Didsbury
