CHORLTON PEOPLE
DAVE BISHOP - chair, FRIENDS OF CHOrLTON MEADOWS
E
nthusiastic naturalist and Chair of the Friends of Chorlton Meadows, Dave Bishop campaigns and works tirelessly for the preservation and regeneration of our local wildlife. Born and bred in Peterborough, he first moved to Chorlton in 1972 to work as a lab assistant in the soaps and detergents industry. Now retired, Dave finds himself busier than ever… How did you first become interested in all things flora and fauna?
Just before leaving Peterborough I had a few months out of work. For reasons which now escape me, I decided to occupy some of this time learning the names of common wild flowers. I would cycle out into the countryside, with a field guide in my pocket, and attempt to identify the plants around me. When I arrived in Manchester I thought that the opportunities to carry on this activity would be limited - then I discovered Chorlton Meadows and the Mersey Valley. At that time the area was truly amazing and, in spite of all the tipping, motorway building, etc., it had a very rich flora. I spent many a happy Sunday afternoon wandering about putting names to as many of the local plants as possible.
When did you first form the Friends of Chorlton Meadows, and what led you to do so?
In the late 70s I met David Lloyd, who was the first Chief Warden in the Mersey Valley. David was a superb naturalist and I learned much from him
and his staff. After David left the Valley in the early 80s there appeared to be a shift in emphasis, and the priorities became ‘access’ and ‘informal recreation’ rather than wildlife. In the years that followed the Valley lost much of the diversity that had made it so special - and no-one seemed to care! After my retirement, I decided to do whatever I could to reverse this decline, met some other people who felt the same and set up the Friends of Chorlton Meadows with (FoCM treasurer) John Agar. I consider FoCM to be our joint creation.
With the reduction in funding to the warden service by Manchester City Council, what impact do you think will this have on the meadows? Although this turn of events is regrettable (particularly for those members of the warden service who have been adversely affected), I feel it could also represent opportunities. Volunteer groups like FoCM need to work closely with the Council to ensue the best outcome for the Valley. The Council still has a responsibility to maintain the Valley, and I get the impression that they are working on a plan
WWW.COMMUNITYINDEX .CO.UK
to find the best way forwards.
What does the future hold for the FoCM?
With the impending abolition of the Mersey Valley Warden Service, the FoCM and the Mersey Valley are at a bit of a crossroads. We want to see the whole community enjoying the Meadows, but we shall also be pushing for a better deal for wildlife. In that sense our aims and objectives haven’t changed since we formed the group. We will be actively seeking out opportunities which will allow us to fulfill those objectives. Our task days and other events are always well attended, so we are confident that we have the support of the community.
Who or what is your greatest influence?
One of my major inspirations was the great singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl [a Salford lad]. One of the first things I did when I moved to Manchester was join the Song Carriers folk club, which met in a pub in what is now the “Northern Quarter”. The other members were all traditional song fans or ‘Ewanites’, so effectively I had a ready-made social life.
Finally, in fifty words or less, describe what Chorlton means to you.
Chorlton is a pleasant, comfortable, lively place to live, full of thoughtful and interesting people. What’s not to like? I can’t really imagine living anywhere else.

erhaps better known for her poetry or as the lead singer of rock band, “The March Violets”, this is Rosie Garland’s Debut novel. Set in a world of Victorian poverty, this is a darkly magical tale. Eve is conceived to the roars of an escaped, angry circus lion. Born 9 months later covered in fur she
becomes known as the lion-faced girl. At first determined to live the life of a normal girl she soon realises this will be impossible. When a generous and charming suitor comes to court her, Eve believes she will get the life she deserves. Surely this is happy ever after. The story of

greatness of its builder.”* The ‘frown of fortune’ was no less than the opening of the Suez Canal which did for his business by creating a quicker route to the east. With its opening in 1869 Sam lost his commercial advantage and within six years be was forced into bankruptcy. The house and its contents along with the 80 acres were put up for sale in the spring of 1875 and the auction of the contents stretched out over five days.
ow I don’t usually do stately homes, but back in N 1879 I might just have made the effort to visit Manley Hall which had once been the home of the ‘merchant prince’ Sam Mendel. It was an impressive place built in the Italianate style with fifty rooms in 80 acres of grounds which included a greenhouse, orangery, deer park, fountains and ornamental lakes. Added to this was a fine collection of paintings including works by Constable, Gainsborough, Leighton, Millais and Turner. All of which reflected the vast wealth of Sam Mendel who had made that wealth by being able to ship textiles to India and Australia around the Cape of Good Hope faster than his competitors. “He was the son of a rope manufacturer who started business off Blackfriars Street, succeeding to the business

of Mr. Robert Gardiner, a Levant merchant [and] built a warehouse in Dickenson Street, removing thrice to Booth Street, to Portland Street, and finally to his splendid warehouse in Chepstow Street. It is said of him he was never known to do a shabby act, but in the end he felt the frown as well as the smile of fortune. In 1875 his magnificent estate ‘Manley House’ was the scene of a memorable sale, and it has ever since been but the ghost of its former self, in spite of effort after effort to galvanise it into life. The estate was cut up into building lots, and the tenantless hall survives only to witness the short-lived
Not that I would have been wealthy enough to consider bidding for the fine furniture, paintings, silver plate and old Chelsea porcelain. Nope, for me it would have a walk around the gardens when they were opened to the public later in 1875. And I rather suspect it would have been the piece in the Manchester Guardian of May 30th, 1879 which pushed me out of Chorlton and in to Whalley Range to walk the gardens, because the “announcement of yesterday with regard

to the coming sale of this fine estate ... [means] that in all probability Manley Hall will not much longer remain open to inspection.”** So despite the poor weather which had done little for “the great floral display which might very properly have been expected at the Whitsun Holiday” there was still “much to admire in the greenhouses and ferneries.” Along with “the Clown cricketers who were to play in the park on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and the Latelle ‘aerial bicyclists’ who have lately completed a successful engagement at the Westminster Aquarium [and] Mr. J.A. Whelan of Huddersfield who will make an ascent in his balloon ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’ on Thursday and
Friday as well as a variety of amusements for visitors.” But I rather think it would have been the ‘bands of music’ which would have attracted me, one of which may well have been our own Chorlton Brass Band. They had been formed in the 1820s and while I do not have a complete list of where they performed, there are records of them at Bell Vue, Lytham, Blackpool and Stalybridge as well as closer to home in Chorlton and up at Barlow Hall. Now Samuel had sponsored the band during the 1860s and it would be nice to think that they were there at Manley Hall in the June of 1879. And that perhaps is an appropriate point to close, for Samuel’s eclipse appears to have been a loss for Chorlton.
For not only did he sponsor the band but was a very active patron of the old parish church and in that great schism over the building of a new church and ist location on Edge Lane he remained with the group championing the existing building. DiDsbury arts festival 2013 Another successful year
H
undreds of families enjoyed picnics and puppets in the park as the sun shone down on the final day of Didsbury Arts Festival 2013. More than 500 people were entertained by Punch & Judy, Mother Hen and huge, exotic birds during a magical afternoon of puppetry and storytelling at Didsbury’s mysterious Parsonage Gardens on Sunday 30 June. The event was one of the closing highlights of a nine-day celebration which drew 5000 festival goers to the area’s bars, churches and other venues to enjoy music, dance, comedy, literature, theatre, film and visual arts. Other highlights of Festival week included an evening of poetry and brass with Simon Armitage and sell-out performances by jazz star Matt Halsall and world-class pianist
Kathryn Stott & Friends. The Kathryn Stott concert raised nearly £2,000 for local charity, Francis House Hospice. Festival Director, Maria Stripling, said: ‘We were delighted to see so many people of all ages enjoying such a fantastic and diverse range of events during DAF 2013. The festival brought together some of the best artists – not just from Didsbury and Manchester – but from all over the UK. ‘I’d like to thank everyone involved - all the artists, sponsors, volunteers and local organisations who have been so generous with their time and support and have helped make this year’s DAF such a great

success.’ Organised by a group of enthusiastic local residents, the aim of DAF is to celebrate the arts and the wealth of talent, diversity and the vibrant community that make Didsbury so special. Since its launch in 2009, the area’s annual celebration of the arts has now become a fixture on the local calendar.

JUly in your Garden
T
he spring romp through June, displaying the vibrancy of the expectant garden in all its fresh hues and promise, brings us to a calmer July where the garden pauses for breath and revels in all its glorious, colourful display. This is our summer and we now see the height of flowering potential in the garden borders with perennials that will take us through until September crossing over with the last of the late spring colour. We’ve seen the best of some perennials that will need a tidy up now (some will reappear for an encore later if we’re lucky) – geranium, aquilegia, nepeta, penstemon and alchemilla mollis for example can be cut back and wisteria pruned. Lavenders can be clipped once they have flowered as can early summer flowering shrubs like philadelphus and weigela. For a stunning sunny border try a selection of silver foliage
and look great with other complementary colours – Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’; Eryngium giganteum; Echinops bannaticus – the latter holding perfectly formed blue or white globes on stately silver stems. Other silver foliage plants you could try are the various varieties of Artemesia – ‘Powis Castle’ being one of the most famous; Santolina chamaecyparissus – also known as cotton lavender for those who don’t want to attempt the nifty Latin title and for a stalwart shrub, Eleagnus ‘Quicksilver’.
plants such as Brachyglottis (formerly Senecio) – a lovely shrub that has leaves with sliver undersides and a surprising yellow flower. Team this with Stachys byzantina at the front of the border, also known as ‘Lamb’s ears’ not surprisingly because of its glaucous, furry, bunny-earshaped leaves.
For a slightly prehistoric look, you could try some of the Verbascum varieties (V.bombyciferum for a particularly silver variety). This is not for the feint hearted – Verbascums are serious statement plants and will require a bit of space. Vita Sackville West described the colours of her Verbascums as “dusty, fusty, musty” which is not dissimilar to how I would describe myself after a day in the garden in July.
Silver/purple furry flowering spires compliment the foliage from July onwards

Being Part of Grow For It Scott Avenue Community Allotment, Chorlton
B
efore I started my regular visit to Scott Avenue Community Allotment I didn’t know the difference between perennial and biennial. I’d never heard of pricking out or earthing up, let alone knew which end of a potato was the top or the bottom. Now I know how to rotate crops to minimise pest damage, what and when to plant to improve the condition of the soil and have cultivated endless patience when confronted by persistent weeds.
But it’s not just the learning I am gaining from my involvement that keeps me going back. There is something more than satisfying about creating food from seed to harvest. The taste of freshly pulled sweet leeks, newly dug out waxy potatoes and tart tangy cut rhubarb are beyond compare to any supermarket produce. Unlike commercially
grown fruit and veg, Scott Avenue Community Allotment produce is organic and has an almost zero carbon footprint. And it’s not only the gift of growing and sharing that which we grow that drives me. Scott Avenue Community Allotment is Chorlton in a microcosm; it is authentically representative of the diversity that makes Chorlton the interesting place that it is. Volunteers young and old from within our local community join together for a common purpose. We share tasks, the hard and easy bits. We muck in and get dirty so the planting’s finished on time. We seed, we water, we chop, dig, plant, turn over, create, pull down and create again. We pick, cut and gather to share and delight in. And of course there’s plenty of tea and biscuits to be enjoyed. Did you know we keep bees? Busy bees are making honey right in the heart of Chorlton. There are three hives in our apiary from which we produce delicious honey for sale. The funds raised, along with those from selling our seedlings, plants and firewood, serve to help keep our allotment alive. You can learn how to keep bees

for yourself too. Why not book onto one of our Introduction to Beekeeping Workshops this summer? There are places available on 4th August and 25th August (contact Loucas for details, see below). In a nutshell, my weekly visits to Grow For It are a joy. To know that my experiences here are my own seeds of learning for the future, when I can apply all that Nancy, Loucas and the team have taught me in my own vegetable plot make it all the more worthwhile. Grow For It is a friendly, welcoming, fun and fulfilling place to spend a few hours a week and anyone who drops by is welcome to take part. All the work is voluntary and every little bit helps. So come and expand our community of veggie growers and keep this important community project thriving.

CHORLTON’s new photography gallery
T
he Basement Gallery is a new space in Chorlton for photographers, amateur or professional, to display their work. The gallery was initially envisaged as a workshop area where Gwyn, a happy amateur digital photographer, could indulge his hobby that could otherwise have taken over the spare bedroom of his home. It soon became obvious that the two roomed basement could become something more than
just a work area, so the idea of a gallery was born. Gwyn is no stranger to Chorlton, having just retired from working in a very well known organic grocery store in the town. The entrance to The Basement Gallery is via the cobbled alley to the right of Sugar Cube Cafe on Barlow Moor Road then left down the flight of steps.
Opening will take place from 7.30pm on the evening of Thursday 15th August, 2013.

The other divisional winners received their trophies at the Annual Presentation Dinner, where the guest speaker was former Man City player

up to Castleton in division two, division three Spurley Hey seconds from Bury Ams, division A Ardwick seconds who also won the Manchester Amateur Cup and the Wray Cup, division B Staly Lions from Milton seconds, division C Whalley Range thirds from Moston Brook thirds, division D Tintwistle seconds from Old Ashtonians thirds, division E Hillgate from Moorside Rangers seconds, division F Bedians

Chorlton new girls end drought
W
ithington Golf Club were superb hosts as they staged the Mersey Ladies Shield with nearly 200 players involved on a busy day in a competition which has now run for over 50 years. It proved to be a memorable day for Chorlton Golf Club as they ended a 19year drought in the competition with a stunning victory seeing them finish six points clear of Sale. Leading the way for Chorlton were individual winners Kathy Hu and Veronica Leech with a fine score of 45 points. Next in were Sale’s Moira

Forster and Jenny Kehoe with 44. But then Chorlton took over with 43-pointers from Terri Tivenan and Matilda Botam and Shirley Anders and Monica Parsonage. These were backed up by Sandra Barton and Pat Nugent 38 and Gerry Gee and Jane Sellors, and Lady Captain Gail Hegarty and Carol Dunki Jacobs both 37 taking them to
a winning score of 243 points. Sale finished with 237, Didsbury with a top pair of Brenda Chadwick and Claire Murray 42, on 233, Withington 224 with Judith Quine and Liz Bradbury as their top scorers with 40 and Northenden with 214 with their top score of 38 coming from Kath Cunningham and Ann Finan. Chorlton Lady Captain Gail Hegarty said: “To win the Mersey Shield again after 19 years is a great boost for our ladies and a real team effort.
“We have had an influx of new players in the last year and with excellent coaching from our pro James Curtis they have grown in confidence and showed their ability with some great scores helping us to victory in a competition where in recent years our main concern is to avoid finishing in bottom place.”
