Chorlton Theatre and Winter Gardens Andrew Simpson
I don’t suppose many people in Chorlton today know of H.D. Moorhouse, and yet in the early decades of the 20th century he was responsible for setting up a chain of cinemas across the city and beyond. And of course the point of the story is that his first cinema was here. It was the Pavilion; opened in 1904 and acquired by Moorhouse in 1909 by which time it had become the Chorlton Theatre and Winter Gardens. It stood on Wilbraham Road, just past the bridge where it runs into Buckingham Road. Looking at this 1910 photograph of the theatre it is hard to think anyone would be impressed in going there. It has all the appearance of a big wooden shed which I guess is what it was. But maybe I am being a tad unfair because the monochrome picture cannot convey what must have a brightly painted building which had all the promise of an exciting experience which began with the box office with its wrought iron additions reminiscent of a seaside pier and carefree summer holidays. And then there would have been all the preliminaries like the pictures of the artists which were displayed along the entrance and the choice of what to eat during the performance. Now it would be easy to fall into
the trap of believing that these early cinema audiences were in some way less sophisticated than us today. The stories of early picture goers reeling from the sight of a speeding train heading towards them may be true, but they would have been under no illusion that what they were watching was a show. To underline this simple truth, many cinemas including ours hedged their bets and put on variety shows as well as films. So in the week beginning June 20th 1910 the billboard outside announced a programme which included the Whips who were a variety act.
the circuit from 1939 until 1956. He was also one of the founders of our own Mancunian Film Company which had its studios on Dickenson Road and which in 1949 came down to Chorlton to film shots for Bella’s Birthday outside the Horse & Jockey.
Sadly there are no pictures of the inside but it would have been a fairly simple affair with wooden seating at the far end and wooden floor boards. But I doubt that this took away from the excitement of seeing the moving pictures in the dark even if there was the occasional noise from a passing train pulling into the railway station.
Now there will be those of you who like me have idly wondered if he regularly visited either the old Pavilion, or the Palais de Luxe, or maybe given that it was his day job perhaps he settled for a book and an armchair by the fire. I don’t know, but I bet there will be someone who does.
The place continued showing films in the years after the First World War but it had been eclipsed by the far more impressive Palais de Luxe Cinema which had opened in 1915 on Barlow Moor Road close to the tram terminal. This was a real picture house of dreams with its impressive cream and green tiled exterior and plush inside. By comparison the wooden building on Wilbraham Road looked dated, unfashionable and more than a little down market. By then Moorhouse had established a cinema circuit, later acquiring the Palais de Luxe which became part of
Hubert Douglas Moorhouse remains a shadowy figure. He was born in Kendal in 1879 grew up along the Ashton Road in Openshaw and in 1911 was living with his parents at 61 Wilbraham Road which was an eight bed roomed house along the stretch from York Road towards Brundretts Road.

Making Wood Work An exciting new project is being set up in Manchester to make the most of wood that is a by-product of park management and recreational woodlands in the area. Greater Manchester TreeStation is the brainchild of local tree surgeon Phil Benn who has been doing treework in the local area for many years. Phil said: “It seemed crazy that getting rid of wood was a problem for most tree surgeons. It was just being thrown away or used as mulch, and it is potentially so much more useful.”
Wood is Amazing Trees are beautiful. They purify the air, nourish the soil and help prevent erosion. Trees have always been central to human life and culture. Wood from local trees must form a part of the kind of locally based economy that we need if we are to live sustainably. It is madness to import wood from Lithuania or Columbia to burn or to make into furniture, when we have not made proper use of the trees on our own doorstep.
Greater Manchester TreeStation
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
The idea is to collect wood from local tree surgeons and from woodland management activities of local councils, and use it to give the maximum benefit. Larger trunks are cut into planks and sold to local joiners. Other wood (mainly from native hardwood species) is made into logs for burning in stoves, whilst lower grade wood (conifer, willow and poplar) is made into woodchip for biomass boilers. The TreeStation is a not-for-profit social enterprise based in Gorton and is constituted as a Society for the Benefit of the Community.
This government grant scheme pays businesses (from now) and individuals (from Oct 2012) to burn renewable fuels in biomass boilers, which can be installed instead of the normal gas boiler and can heat the whole house and the hot water. Local firewood can be used to fire your RHIsubsidised boiler. The TreeStation also makes woodchip for large institutional biomass boilers, using byproduct wood and where necessary softwoods bought from local commercial forests.
Burn Local and Clean Burning wood makes sense if the wood is local and you burn it efficiently. The TreeStation sources timber from gardens, parks, and local amenity woodlands. And if you use a DEFRA approved stove then you get about 80% of the energy into your room, compared to 20% for an open fire. Approved stoves burn clean, producing very little ash or smoke, making them suitable for smoke-free zones.
Beautiful Furniture You don’t need to damage rainforests if you want a fabulous hardwood kitchen table. Traditional British hardwoods such as oak, ash and beech are all plentifully available from the TreeStation – and it couldn’t be more local. Further information about the TreeStation can be found at www.treestation.co.uk or by emailing info@treestation.co.uk. The TreeStation is also currently seeking funding from customers and supporters, via a community share issue. Please support your local TreeStation!

Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop The Registrar’s Manual for Detecting Forced Marriages Sophie Hardach Selim is not much more than a child when he is forced to swim for his life in order to reach dry land off the coast of Italy, entering the country as an illegal immigrant. He eventually makes it to Germany where he is given an official age of 13. This means he has 5 years before he can be shipped back off to Kurdistan where he is likely to be arrested and tortured by corrupt authorities. The story is narrated by an unnamed female character who is a contempary of Selim, growing up in the same German town but having a very different life. The story unfolds to show us how their lives entwine in an unusual but not entirely unexpected way. This novel deals with the so many issues but the central one is the thousands of immigrants who flock to Europe each year willing to risk their lives just to have a chance at a better life. The novel also deals with our own political and moral convictions and how far we would go to test these beliefs. As with the unnamed female narrator, we see how many of us lose the passion of our teenage and student convictions and join that dreaded “rat race”. Despite the difficult issues it’s still a fairly easy read but well worth the time.
The Sealed Letter Emma Donoghue Perhaps best known for her smash hit novel Room this book couldn’t be more different. Set primarily in 1864 the story is based on real life events that shocked delicate Victorian sensibilities. A chance encounter on a London street leads to a couple of old friends being
reunited. Helen and Fido have not seen each other for seven years as Helen has been living in Malta with her naval star husband. Fido (Emily Faithfull) is a very unusual woman in Victorian society. She runs her own printing press which has even received a Royal warrant. Fido is actively involved in the early movement for female equality with men. The friendship is tested to the absolute limit, forcing Fido to question her ideals and morals. This is a great read for any fans of historical fiction and particularly the Victorian era. The author cleverly weaves relevant historical events into the plot with great subtlety. If you’re a fan of Sarah Waters then I think this would definitely appeal to you.
The Worst Princess Anna Kemp/Sara Ogilvie Kemp and Ogilvie made a big splash a couple of years back with Dogs Don't Do Ballet. Their new offering is equally intent on upending expectations. Young Princess Sue lives in a castle, awaiting the arrival of her knight in shining armour – because that's what happens to princesses, isn't it? Except, when her prince finally rides up, Sue finds the whole business dull and stifling. In fact she's far more on a wavelength with the local dragon. The prince had better watch his step. Sue won't be content to sit tight and take a back seat. Bouncy, lively, beautifully illustrated, and dripping with wit and panache, this is a neat, funny riposte to the Rainbow Fairy school of gender stereotypes. If you've got altogether too much pink about the house, this might be the antidote.

Chorlton Open Gardens Sunday 24th June 11-5pm
Following the success of the first Chorlton Open Gardens last year, eleven new gardeners have offered to open their gardens. The event will take place on Sunday June 24th between 11am and 5pm and will include 25 gardens and yards, 2 allotments and Unicorn Roof. One garden specializes in plants for dyeing textiles, a yarden in ‘vertical growing’ and one allotment has an orchard and apiary. There will be music including jazz, cellos and a choir in one garden and two will show artwork by local artists. Several gardens will have refreshments and plant sales, garden ceramics and glass. Programmes, costing £5 per person, containing a map and description of all the sites are on sale at Chorlton Book Shop, Blossom Flowers, Creative Recycling and Chorlton Plant Nursery. The event is in aid of the charity Freedom From Torture who support refugees and asylum seekers who have been tortured. I hope the weather will be as kind as it was last year and thank everyone for their support. Merryn Cooke

Crazy Hanging Planter Danielle from Rubbish Revamped shows you how to transform a used milk bottle and spare buttons into a funky hanging planter. How crazy can you make yours look? You will need: A 1 litre plastic milk bottle Scissors Craft knife Hole punch Fishing line (2 x 60cm) 80cm string Googly eyes Buttons (or beads from broken jewellery) Glue or double sided sticky tape Newspaper Plant (flower or herb) Compost Optional: indelible felt pens, waterproof stickers
4. Now decorate the ‘head’. Add googly eyes or buttons using PVA glue or double sided sticky tape. String buttons and beads through the fishing line and knot them to keep them in place.
Here’s some more ideas for turning unused items into fun and attractive planters.
1. Cut bottom off bottle
2. Make some slits for drainage in the lid and replace on bottle
3. Punch two holes on both sides of the rim. Feed 60cm of fishing line through the front holes on each side and tie a knot in the middle so you have two pieces of line about 30cm long.
5. Once the buttons are stuck dry, wrap the whole thing in newspaper to protect it. Part fill the bottle with compost and add the plant. Pack in extra compost as needed.
What have you got lying around the house that you could give a new life to as a planter? An old tin teapot and a leaking watering can? 6. Thread the hanging string through the two middle holes of the planter. Water, hang, admire.

June in your Garden by Katherine Watson In 1975 my dad built a then very fashionable rockery in our garden. I spent the next thirty or so years feeling mildly contemptuous towards its random rocks and gravely outcrops and certainly not in any way embracing of its many alpine delights. In the last few years however, I have noticeably thawed and on a recent trip to Holehird gardens near Windermere, the home of the Lakes Horticultural Society, positively swore that I would create a small alpine space in my own garden. Holehird has a number of National plant collections as well as a huge collection of alpines and extensive rock gardens all tumbling towards some magnificent views of Windermere with the peaks of the Lake District beyond. For years I had thought that alpines were fussy
beggers, disliking excess wet and needing to be cosseted during winter with little panels of glass over them and hot cocoa, but actually there are many varieties that will do well even in our ‘grim-up-north’ weather. The cobweb houseleek (Sempervivum arachnoideum) for example is always a favourite as are the miniature creeping stonecrops (Sedums). One of my favourites (and only because I once met a very forthright woman with a striking resemblance to Margaret Rutherford whose sister once had a national collection of them) are the many varieties of Saxifrages. Percy Thrower in a 1969 book ‘Everyday Gardening in Colour’ declares the three types of Saxifrages (Cushion, Encrusted and Mossy) as “the most important genera for the rock garden…” , each requiring slightly different methods of
cultivation. The Encrusted prefer sun, the Mossy shade and the Cushion somewhere in between. Other alpines you could try are the many varieties of Lewisia, Alchemilla alpina and Berberis stenophyla. In nearly all cases, alpines like a really well drained soil, preferably mixed with gravel, and a fairly sheltered position. So if you have a few spare pots and a bag of gravel, you too could do as most of us end up doing post 40, stepping straight into the slip-on overshoes of our forebears and recreate a little corner of 70’s heaven, you’ll be surprised at how addictive it becomes… Katherine Watson, Fat Grass Garden Designs

St Clements Church
celebrating 500 years in Chorlton What a year 1512 was for Chorlton, a year of celebrations, just as this year is. In 1512 the Barlow’s of Barlow Hall built a chapel for use of the residents in Chorlton on land they owned on Chorlton Green. Before 1512 you walked to Didsbury (or the church in Manchester – now the Cathedral), so if you wanted to get married, baptise the baby or bury granny you went to Didsbury. There is no picture of the original chapel but from descriptions we have it was a small building with a stone foundation, wooden walls, a shingle roof and small windows and from this description at some point a drawing was made of what it probably looked like. You did still have to go to Didsbury for burials because the Chorlton chapel had no graveyard. The Mosley’s arrived at Hough End Hall shortly after this and in 1539 our very own saint was born at Barlow Hall, Edward Barlow, who later became Father Ambrose Barlow.
The priest came from either Didsbury or Manchester to preach and give the Mass. Yes Mass, the Protestant church did not yet exist. Until the Reformation things went quietly in Chorlton, then the church’s allegiance to Rome was abolished by Henry VIII. So over night you couldn’t worship according to the rites of Rome. Abbeys, cathedrals, priories, monasteries, convents, churches were pillaged for vestments. That put the Barlows in an awkward spot, they were devout Catholics but had to publicly worship at the Chapel to show they were obeying the law. Young Edward Barlow left for France and became a priest and returned to England where his life was in constant danger. After years of fear and hardship he was eventually arrested, an elderly man recovering from a stroke, he refused to give up his faith and was executed and was, by the Catholics regarded as a martyr. But things settled
down. The Mosleys were the Lords of the Manor of Manchester and did occasionally worship at the chapel. By the 1700’s Chorlton had expanded a little, the George’s were on the throne and it was decided that the church was too small and it was demolished, to be replaced by a plain Georgian building with a spire. It was in the early 1700’s that Chorlton got it’s first graveyard – the one at the Green – if you look you can still find some of old gravestones. By the early 1800’s Chorlton was expanding, the Industrial Revolution had started, the Bridgewater Canal was in use and the railway arrived first to Stretford and then Chorlton. Business owners and their families were moving out of smoky, dirty Manchester to the villages round about and Chorlton was one of those villages. It was then that the Reverend John E Booth realised that the church was too small and proposed the building of a new church and the Earl of Egerton who owned land at Pigot Hey offered a plot for the Church. This is where the church is now. It wasn’t a popular idea, a lot of influential people thought a new church wasn’t
necessary, and that the church on the Green was big enough. The building started in the 1860’s and wasn’t consecrated as a Chapel of Ease of the Parish Church until 1896, three years after the death of the Reverend Booth. During that time a lot of change took place in Chorlton but very little change happened to the New Church as it was called, although it is said that the South Door of the New Church came from the Old Church, which was closed in early of the years of the 20th century and was pulled down in the 1940’s. Since then there have been other changes. In the 1970’s the church was altered, the reredos and ornamental gates at the entrance to the nave were sold, the building altered to provide meeting rooms, toilets and a kitchen and the altar was moved from under the stained glass east windows. Very little alteration took place after that until the 21st Century. What changes will happen in the future, who knows but St. Clements is at the heart of a thriving community and a variety events taking place, such at the Arts Festival, the Beer Festival, the Big Green Festival, Chorlton Fun Run and the Chorlton Film Institute holds it films evenings here and a whole variety of groups have their meetings in the buildings. Long may it continue! Ida W Bradshaw

“What can I say about Village Dry Cleaners? Just excellent! Amir, who owns the business, goes above and beyond what is expected and I can whole heartedly recommend his services. I run a vintage inspired bridal boutique in the heart of West Didsbury. As we stock highend dresses with sometimes challenging silks and fabrics to clean, we’re always amazed at how Amir manages to spruce up our dresses. I recommend his services to all our brides. He’s truly excellent at what he does and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to fabric – the best dry cleaners in the north, without a doubt!” Nikki Graeme Owner, The White Closet, Didsbury
