Coming Clean with Bathroom Angels Saving water may not be foremost in our minds at this time of year, but as more and more of us move to a metered supply, looking after the wet stuff is not only environmentally friendly, but also saves hard cash.
less water still. Digital showers store personal preferences, so all the family can pre-programme their perfect shower without getting the hot and cold treatment. Add a booster pump and you’re in ecoshower heaven.
If yours is an older house, with traditional bathroom fittings, an update could mean an annual saving of thousands of litres without any compromise on hygiene or comfort.
Perhaps the biggest culprit for money literally going down the drain is the toilet, with some older WCs using up to 13 litres of water per flush! A new, more efficient cistern can save up to 30 litres per person every day. Over a year, that can add up to 30,000 litres in even a small household. That’s a third off the bill if you’re on a meter.
We all know a shower uses less water than a soak in the bath: an electric shower also heats only the water you need. Fitting an aerated showerhead, which takes air in to ‘fatten up’ the drops of water, means you get a nice drench using

tells you if you’re on full or half-flow – handy if you’re brushing your teeth or rinsing your hands, rather than filling the basin. You can aerate your basin tapheads too: bigger splash, cleaner hands, less water. That said, there are times when only a nice hot bubble bath will do. The good news is that with a cleverly designed, low volume tub, you can fill up more quickly and still enjoy a long, leisurely guilt-free soak.

Chorlton Traders Association (CTA) is a dynamic group of local businesses that make things happen. If you’ve ever seen flowers, heard music, had fun or felt Christmassy in Chorlton, it’s likely that CTA was involved somewhere along the line.
Chorlton’s Big Saturday Saturday 6th December is a day for the diary in Chorlton. The festive fun kicks off in earnest with the Christmas Lights Switch On party and a visit from a certain jolly fellow dressed in red. CTA has organised a fundraising raffle, so dig deep for a chance to win some festival sparkle and fabulous prizes, donated by our members.
Saturday 6th December is also Small Business Saturday (see page 24). You don’t need us to tell you about how great Chorlton’s indie business sector is – just make sure you vote with your feet and your cash. If you’ve got a TAG! loyalty card, you’ll already know about the year-round savings you can make when you shop local. If you haven’t, look out for the new 2015 cards in December or visit www.tagpassiton.com.
Pop-Art
There are two types of people in Chorlton: those who love lovely things and those who make them. Both are catered for at the wonderful Chorlton Art Market pop-up in the Precinct. Get in touch with Alice on chorltonartmarket@gmail.com if you’re a designer, artist or maker looking for a pitch; or wander by if you’re looking for an unusual or thoughtful gift – it doesn’t even have to be for someone else.
Please help!
If you’re about to start filling up on festive food, spare a thought for those on the street now the weather’s turned cold. If you have food, drink and warm clothing you can spare, drop it into Elliott’s in the Precinct for the Mad Dogs Street Project. This is a charity, run by and for Manchester people, that cooks hot food for homeless people. It’s all done by volunteers, so your donations go right to where they matter: a pan of food costing just £7.00 can feed up to 30 people.

Congratulations to Epicerie Ludo, who recently picked up the Best Food and Drink Retailer award at the 2014 Manchester Food and Drink Festival. Ludo has been a great addition to Beech Road and raised lots of money for charity through the TAG scheme (a magnifique 10% saving for cardholders too). Honourable mention also goes to the Parlour, Food Pub of the Year finalist in a year that’s seen Chorlton somewhat under-represented in the finals. Those judges need to catch the tram out of town a bit more.

Children’s Book Award Shortlist from Chorlton Bookshop
Back as part of Chorlton Book Festival for a second year, the Chorlton Children’s Book Award seeks to find the best book of any kind for 9-12 year olds, published between April 2013 and March of this year. The shortlist was decided by readers from local schools. All titles are on sale from Chorlton Bookshop and voting forms are available there and from Chorlton Library.
A Wrinkle in Time: Graphic novel edition
by Madeleine l’Engle & Hope Larson
Madeleine l’Engle’s original novel, about 14 year old Meg’s fantastical quest to find her missing father, has been an American classic for over fifty years now. A film version from the writer of Frozen is in the pipeline too – but for now this stylish comic book version, from acclaimed illustrator Larson, tells the strange, gripping yarn in fine fashion.
Why Spacemen Can’t Burp by Mitchell Symons
This nifty non-fiction volume is the children’s equivalent of New Scientist’s best selling Does Anything Eat Wasps? and Why Can’t Elephants Jump? here tailored for a bright, inquisitive and wonderfully silly young readership. In fact, they provided the questions,
from ‘Can rocks have snot?’ to ‘What have hyenas got to laugh about?’. It’s never remotely patronizing in tone, so it succeeds in being informative and lots of fun.
Doll Bones by Holly Black
Black, author of the popular Spiderwick Chronicles, here tells the tale of three young friends who are right on the brink of growing up. But when they get mixed up in the mysterious matter of a lost china doll, things take a deeply sinister turn. It’s creepy rather than gruesome or terrifying, but it’s very effective stuff, and a gripping read, with a satisfying emphasis on the twists and turns of adolescence and friendship.
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
Out of the blue, best friends Agatha and Sophie are kidnapped and taken to a strange new school
– one where children are trained to be fairy tale characters. Their alumni list includes Snow White, King Arthur and Red Riding Hood. Trouble is, they produce villains as well as heroes... The first volume in a magical trilogy, unashamedly aimed at fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson - though with perhaps more of a female slant this has more class, substance and imagination than many of its kind.
The Last Wild by Piers Torday
12 year old Kester lives away from his parents in a special academy called Spectrum Hall. But this is a world in which virtually all plants and animals have been destroyed by a merciless food corporation. Then Kester discovers something unexpected about the last few surviving animals: he can talk to them... Despite the weighty issues involved, this is never preachy, but rather it’s a bold, original, engrossing adventure. A sequel, The Dark Wild, has already been published.
Demon Dentist by David Walliams
Walliams is well established as a children’s author now – no hint of an indulged celebrity moonlighting here – and he’s managing to write a hilariously twisted Dahlesque book every year. This, his latest, centres on the secret evildoings of a new local dentist Miss Root. But plucky young Alfie and his best pal Gabz get wind of her wicked plans and stand firmly in the way. It’s highly silly, delightfully nasty and, like so much of Walliams’ best work, surprisingly moving.

Psychedelia and Northern Soul in Whalley Range The Psychedelic Disco Tech started as an informal club night, raising awareness for last April’s Big Green Happening. Playing Disco, House, Techno, Psychedelia and all grooves in-between, the idea was to use the power of music to knit people to the event and celebrate life, tunes and fun.
Following the success of Bernie Connor’s Sound of Music night in March, the team now have a regular night. Held every second Friday of the month at the fabulous Carlton Club, in the heart of the Whalley Range conservation area, this event goes form strength to strength. It features guest DJs and live gigs, the most recent being Fila Brazillia’s Steve Cobby, playing to a packed house. November’s night, on the 14th, features a Northern Soul DJ set by the much loved Jonny the Milkman - and there are dance lessons too! What are you waiting for?

Let there be lights
Children’s festive parade to light up Beech Road The festive season will get underway in Chorlton on Thursday, November 27th when Beech Road’s Christmas Lights are switched on.
The annual event, always a wonderful treat for the community, will this year feature local schoolchildren in a magical lantern parade from Beech Road Park down to Chorlton Green. The parade will set off at 6pm from the park, with the lights being switched on at 6.30pm on the Green. The evening will see Beech Road come alive with music, mince pies, entertainment, late night opening and lashings of Christmas cheer. It will also kick off regular Thursday late night opening on Beech Road in the run up
to Christmas; with stores also trading late on December 4th, 11th and 18th to help locals stock up on all their presents. The switch-on event on the 27th will raise funds to buy new play equipment for Beech Road Park. The lanterns for the parade are being made by the children themselves, under the watchful eye of Paul Wilcox, of Chorlton forest school, We Are Adventurers. Mary Paul, from Beech Road Traders, says: “The lights switch-on is an event that brings the whole community together and we’re delighted that children will play a big part this year. “We look forward to seeing everyone on Beech Road on the 27th for a night of Christmas cheer.”

Mark Greer
The Lonesome and Penniless Cowboys Meet the frontman from the notorious Chorlton music veterans who have been performing infectious, toe-tapping country music for almost 30 years Who are the Lonesome and Penniless Cowboys?
Bassist, Mog, also a DJ with his own show Standing in the Shadows of Lev on all.fm, don’t say he’s from Chorlton! Clive Mellor, not just the best harmonica player in the country, but best maraca player too; Graham Edwards can play really complicated and fast guitar solos, but doesn’t; Tony Trundle flies over from Ireland for gigs, can play the fiddle and fly; Rob Cieka, the beating heart of the Cowboys, on drums; Aiden Smith, accordion wizard who has own eggs to fry with eponymous band. I just sing and like wearing cowboy duds.
How would you describe The Lonesome and Penniless Cowboys in three words? Pickled Edgy Country.
Facebook “f ” Logo
CMYK / .eps
Facebook “f ” Logo
How did you get together?
We formed after I met Mog at a party, appropriately on July 4th 1985. I went there with Clive. We watched a film about Hank Williams and got very drunk, next day I went round and we discussed our mutual love of country music, which at the time was a bit of a guilty secret. The next Saturday, we three busked at the Stretford Pageant. We did a lot of busking (before it got amped up, I may add), it was our Hamburg.
What are your favourite places to play in Chorlton?
We had great times playing the Irish Club on High Lane in the 80s and 90s until they put in the noise limiter. It surprises me that Chorlton doesn’t have more good venues. A lot of places seem to put on live music as an afterthought, with no proper provision. I used to like the Lloyds, not sure they have music anymore. My favourite place to go
now is Chorlton Folk Club at The Cricket Club on Ellesmere Road; great variety of turns and cheap beer - there’s a theme developing here.
What other Chorlton artists would you recommend?
Two of my favourite acts of all time were Dublin Eddy and the Country Breeze, along with Paddy and the Antelopes - great Irish country bands who combined excitement, showmanship and emotion in a way which some newer acts would think is uncool, but it made for a great night out. I suspect they’re all dead, but they were more Whalley Range/Moss Side based. In Chorlton today I like Lucy and Virginia (with DBH), Happy Soul and Tom and the Thumps.
Where can we see you next? We have two gigs at the Klondyke Club in Levenshulme on 12th and 19th December.

Dinosaurs Ate My Caravan
Biscuithead & the Biscuit Badgers • By Linsey Parkinson Whatever happened to songs that made you laugh for the right reasons, rather than the wrong ones? Dinosaurs Ate My Caravan, the new album by Biscuithead and the Biscuit Badgers, isn’t about lazy pastiche or lame satire; it’s intelligent, eclectic and laugh-outloud funny. Sixteen splendid tracks await discerning chaps of all ages and genders: from the hymn to David Attenborough (“Feeding meat to a great white shark/His brother’s in Jurassic Park”) to a useful lesson
on snow formation, a healthy dose of avuncular speculation and a cautionary tale or two. Aficionados will be delighted by new recordings of classic tracks, Cheese and The Land Hermit Crab. The band is inspired by a range of surreal and whimsical influences, which include the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Deaf School and the Divine Comedy. Some call them the thinking man’s Half Man Half Biscuit. I know I do. Nonsense? Of course it is. Have a listen, or ignore them completely, at www.biscuithead.co.uk

others easily accessible, even for older people who might have difficulty with breathing, memory or confusion. Faith and her team would like to help as many older people as possible to get to these sessions and support them in joining in as much as they can manage. Friends and carers are welcome too.
The Older People’s Singing Project Larking Out and About Singing in a group was once seen as the preserve of Midsomer WI types or hippy folksters, but the last few years has seen a complete turnaround. An explosion of singing groups, choirs and telly programmes getting bin-men to sing in front of hundreds has put choirs back in the category of cool. Part of the reason for this popularity is an acceptance, supported by academic research, that singing is actually really good for us, both physically and psychologically.
18
With this in mind, local singing coordinator and director of Singing for Larks, Faith Watson, together with some members of Manchester Larks and Shylarks, has set up a regular singing group for older people, particularly isolated older people. The idea is straightforward: a monthly sing for an hour and a half with refreshments. Faith has the whole group learning and singing together, free from the pressure of working towards public performance. This approach makes the joy of singing with
One of the difficulties with such a project is accessing isolated older people, so if you know of anyone who might be interested or if you work in an organisation which may be able to get this information out, please do contact Faith or pass on the details.

Making Food Fair
Exploring solutions to the many faces of food poverty We’ve seen the news stories about food poverty - people turning to charitable food banks as they struggle to feed their families - but our food industry is responsible for poverty in a number of different forms. Driven by major retailers working to ruthless profit margins, it now exerts a terrible economic pressure on those employed in the production, processing and distribution of what we eat.
Making Food Fair, a gathering organised by Feeding Manchester and the Kindling Trust, aims to tackle the issues surrounding food inequality in all its forms. Experts, activists, and campaigners will discuss progressive and sustainable solutions, and you’ll have an opportunity to have your say and put forward ideas of your own. An inspiring lineup of speakers includes representatives from
Sustain’s London Food Poverty Pilot, Nourish Scotland, Church Action on Poverty and the Principal Investigator of the ERC study Families and Food Poverty in an Age of Austerity.
Making Food Fair takes place on Saturday 22nd November in central Manchester. Places are £10 (with lunch) and advance registration is essential. www.feedingmanchester.org.uk

Step away from the trolley… Celebrate your independents Our parents and grandparents knew what they were doing. When they went shopping, they’d pick up a bag and walk down the road. They knew what they needed, knew exactly where it came from and knew the people selling it. Compare that with our socalled ‘cash-rich-time-poor’ lives, piling bags of food into the boot of the car in a bleak out-of-town car park. They bought fresh, they bought what they needed and they wasted nothing. We talk about ‘shopaholics’ and ‘retail therapy’ as though overspending is a virtue – or at least an endearing weakness. I’d argue that retail therapy really does exist, but it’s not on offer at the Trafford Centre. Shopping local is fun: it’s life-affirming. You chat to real people and you talk about what you want: you can touch, taste, smell - even try - before you buy. Local traders source their own stock and they do it expertly, because if they didn’t, you wouldn’t go back.
Try asking a fishmonger about an interesting-looking fish in his shop. He may not quite be on first-name terms with it, but he’ll certainly know where it lived and the perfect way to cook it. Shopping local makes financial and economic sense: in studies too numerous to list, local traders often come out cheaper than the supermarkets and when you spend locally, your money stays local. Looking longer-term, you help create a vibrant neighbourhood centre, improving local employment and training opportunities. These in turn support families, schools, transport links and house prices. Shopping isn’t a chore - that’s how the supermarkets portray it so they can play up the ‘convenience’ angle. Shopping can be interesting, sociable and rewarding – if you do it right.
Saturday 6th December is Small Business Saturday. If you only do one thing that day… shop small.

November In Your Garden By Katherine Watson
I am increasingly asked to include native hedgerowtype plants in garden schemes for clients who have an eye on sustaining wildlife habitats in their gardens.
More people are beginning to think about how their privatised garden spaces link up to wider green habitats – the corridors between gardens, along roads and even in the city (with perhaps the exception of Market Street). The importance of our hedgerows, for example, in supporting a range of living species has been the focus of much research in recent years. Hedgelink (www.hedgelink.org.uk) talks of the beneficial effects of native plants and wildlife evolving side-by-side over hundreds of years creating ‘wildlife corridors’ of plants flowering and fruiting at slightly different times to accommodate the cycles of their dependents. The ‘linear landscape’ of the native hedgerow is also important for bats who use it as a ‘commuting route’ – a somewhat urbanised term to describe the lines travelled between roosting and feeding sites. Hedgerows are invaluable habitats for dormouse populations who use them as ‘dispersal corridors’ -
important links between copses that are too small to support a viable dormouse population on their own. Bumble bees use hedgerows to guide foraging and they are even important for the survival of ten species of threatened lichen. Whilst most of us don’t have the space to create ‘commuting routes’ or ‘linear landscapes’ between copse and wood, we could include some of these native hedgerow plants to support our garden wildlife at different times of the year. November is a good time to plant bare root hedges and shrubs. For a hedge, five whips per metre or seven in a staggered row will be plenty and some of the native species include: Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn); Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn); Alnus glutinosa and Coryllus avellana (Hazel). For stand alone shrubs try Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose) or Euonymous europaeus ‘Red Cascade’ and for that old English, wild rose look, try Rosa rubiginosa (Sweet Briar) or the stalwart Rosa canina (Dog Rose). There are quite a few suppliers including: www.hopesgrovenurseries.co.uk www.crocus.co.uk www.hedgesdirect.co.uk.

The Story of Chorlton & Whalley Range Love stories from number 28 Edge Lane • By Andrew Simpson Now here is what looks like a series of love stories featuring number 28 Edge Lane.
But first to the house which, for a great chunk of its existence, was known as Barway House. It is still there, hidden during the summer by a canopy of leaves. It is typical of the sort of house which ran along Edge Lane and dates from the 1880s, when it went under the name of Barway Villa. I can’t be sure exactly when it was built, but it was there by 1881 and was the home of Alexander Henry Gilbody and his wife Mary Ellen. The Gilbody’s had three children and were cared for by three servants. Which is what you would expect of a family which appears to have been comfortably well off, living in a 12 roomed house, set in its own grounds with a large greenhouse to the south, stables to the rear and a rateable value of £110. The family were still there a decade and a bit later, which neatly offers up the first two love stories. For on November 8th 1891, Philip Matthew Schofield, aged 25, married Hanna Crosby from Wales. She was just 20 and both worked in the house. Mr Schofield was the coachman and Hannah, a servant. And in the February of the following year, Miss Amelia Caroline Sharpe married Harry Wells Currie, a hairdresser. Both were from Port Maddock. Ten months earlier she had been living with her mother and brother at home in Wales and I guess may well have come to Barway House to take the place
32
of the newly married Hannah Schofield. In time I shall go looking for both couples, but for now I shall finish with George Davison, who was living at Barway House during the end of 1904 and into the following year. I did at first think he was lodging there, but a little later a George Davison is listed as the caretaker and later still is on the census return. But this was his father, because by then our George had married his sweetheart, who he had written to throughout 1904 and 1905. Some of his courting letters have survived and they are a mix of affectionate comments, concerns about Nellie’s health and descriptions of his studies, which take up much of the correspondence. He was set on bettering himself and here are the records of his success in Latin and French, along with English and Maths, all of which were governed by his desire to do well and offer her a secure future. But what strikes you more than anything is the frequent reference to the arrangements of where to meet, whether it was at the ‘end of the Grove’ or at her parents’ home. Today all of this would be accomplished by a phone call or a text, but back then it was the letter and the postcard which, with the frequency of the post,
meant that arrangements to meet could be made on the same day with the confidence that both would get the message. By the end of 1905 he was living in Old Trafford and in 1908 the couple were married, by which time he was back in Barway House, and from there they started their married life in Hulme. So perhaps not a tale of great consequences or matters of high politics, but just a set of stories of people behind the door of number 28 Edge Lane, a house I have passed countless times but given no thought to.

Sport in Chorlton By Geoff Garnett
Rugby: Kids first at Broughton Park Chorlton-based Broughton Park RUFC are piloting the RFU's ‘Kids First Rugby’ - and they've also been chosen as a training base for the Rugby World Cup 2015 play-off team who will play England at the City of Manchester Stadium! Park youth secretary, Phillipa Ranson, said: “Our aim is to promote rugby in our local community as well as the family and social aspects of the sport. “Established in 1882, Broughton Park is one of the oldest rugby clubs in England. We have fantastic facilities which we hire
out for conferences, parties and other events. “We have five senior sides, two junior teams – u13 and a combined u14/15 squad, five mini teams, as well as the very important U6 development squad. “We're holding the sessions on Sundays at the ground. The first one was a huge success and we welcome all newcomers to come along and enjoy what we are doing.” Picture - from the ‘Kids First Rugby’ opening

The club are delighted to have a new green and black strip, provided for them by sponsors JP& Brimelow. It’ll be used by their first team, who are looking to keep their place in the top flight of the Premier Division.
Golf: Marcus makes his move
Marcus Dunning (pictured) has enjoyed his role as assistant professional at Chorlton Golf Club for the past two years, being a key member of James Curtis’ team. He’s now moving to Dubai to work with Grass Roots Golf, which focuses on junior development, plus a full time teaching role at the world famous Emirates Golf Club. Marcus was an outstanding junior golfer with Bolton GC and Lancashire, before enjoying a golf scholarship in North Carolina, where he received a degree in sports management. He started his professional career in Denver USA, but came to Chorlton in 2011 and completed his PGA programme over the next two years. Marcus said: “At Chorlton I gained valuable experience as a full-time coach. I was in charge of ladies, junior and beginner development and also developed my own personal clientele. “My special thanks go to all members of Chorlton for their support, my boss James Curtis and my colleagues, Adam Hodkinson and Dave Mackinnon.”
