The Orchards of Chorlton Manchester markets and included raspberries, rhubarb, currants and gooseberries and above all apples and pears and in particular the Newbridge pear, and Rose of Sharon apple.

This month I am in search of the fruit that was grown in Chorlton in the 1840s and in particular the Rose of Sharon apple tree and the Newbridge pear.

So it was of particular concern to James Higginbotham that in the June of 1847 his apples and pears were doing well. As he said to Somerville who dutifully reported the conversations,

The answer came from the journalist Alexander Somerville who in 1847 had walked the lanes of Chorlton looking for evidence of potato blight, that disease which had destroyed the crops in Ireland, and was already in parts of northern Derbyshire.

“The insects had made great havoc among the fruit in the adjoining orchard during the hot sunny days of May and the first week of June but the cold of last week and the rain of this had come in time to save still a good quantity. There was still a goodly show of apples left, and the Rose of Sharon branches were again fresh, beautiful and healthy.”

He didn’t find any but recorded his conversations with some of our local farmers, one of which was James Higginbotham whose land included a strip along what is now the Recreation Ground on the corner of Beech Road and Cross Road.

It is a priceless piece of reporting and not just because here are the voices of the people who lived in Chorlton over 160 years ago but because it provides us with the actual names of what types of apples and pears were grown here.

The conversation turned away from potatoes to fruit which made up a significant part of the crops we grew for the

And I am indebted to Mary Pennell of the National Fruit Collection** who kindly dug out some information about both crops. “Newbridge – is in fact a ‘perry pear’. It is also known as ‘White Moorcroft’. Rose of Sharon – an apple variety that was exhibited from Cheshire in 1934.

The maps of the period show plenty of orchards and most of the apples and pears went to the Manchester markets, but I long wondered if some were kept back and turned into cider and perry.

Andrew Simpson

Unfortunately this is the only record for this apple but at least we know that it did at least exist at some stage.” All of which is very exciting, well to me anyway. Our Newbridge pears are harvested from the first to the third week in October about the same time as the Rose of Sharon apples. Now what for me is revealing is that here we have the first evidence that along with cider our farmers were growing perry pears and must have been making perry which for anyone unsure is made in much the same way as cider. Back in 1847 Alexander Somerville reported that both pear and apple were “fresh, beautiful and healthy.” At the time he was standing in Higginbotham’s orchard which was the land either side of what is now Crossland Road up as far as Higson Avenue. But there were others dotted across the township. Now the productive life of an apple tree is about 30-40 years although some can go for 80 to a 100 years, so with this in mind I doubt that any we find today will date from 1847, but you never know. Calling all men... For the last six months a hardy bunch of volunteers from Chorlton Good Neighbours have been working to turn a patch of grass and brambles at the side of Wilbraham St Ninian’s church into a pretty outdoor seating area for our coffee mornings, and a growing space for our new gardening club. We still have lots of work to do but we are very grateful to Bramall Construction who have very kindly donated their time and materials to support our project. They have paved a patio and paths in between our raised beds to improve wheelchair access. Chorlton Good Neighbours is a long established Care Group that provides practical support and friendship for older people in the Chorlton and Whalley Range area. We provide a diverse range of activities including exercise classes, befriending, history talks, coffee mornings, a singing group and trips to local areas of interest. Recently we’ve started two new groups aimed at getting more men involved in Chorlton Good Neighbours. Do you enjoy being outdoors? Do you have time to spare? Well then we need you! We are currently looking for older men to volunteer for our gardening club. We have plenty of jobs to do on the plot for all levels of ability and experience. We meet every Friday from 10-12 at Wilbraham St Ninian’s church.

Even on wet days we will still be meeting indoors to discuss our plans for the growing season. Although we can’t guarantee the weather, we can guarantee tea, cake and good company. We hope to see you down there. If gardening isn’t your thing, maybe you’d like to come down to our Snooker afternoon at a local cricket club in Chorlton every Tuesday from 1-3pm. This session is very informal and

friendly – simply come along for a chat and a drink or pit your skills against other competitors at snooker, bowls, cards or darts. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Co ordinator Helen Hibberd on 0161 881 2925 or at goodneighbours@ btconnect.com. You can follow our progress with the gardening club and all our latest news at chorltongoodneighbours. blogspot.co.uk

JP & Brimelow Supporting Green Chorlton Nigel Rose Chariman of Green Chorlton said: “Many thanks to JP & Brimelow for their financial contribution to Green Chorlton. It's a demonstration of how local businesses and local people can work together to make Chorlton a better place to live and work.” Carol Thompson, founder of TAG! (Pass It On) Community Interest Company said: “A huge thanks to the team at JP & Brimelow. It’s always a joy to work with people so passionate about investing in their local community and putting something back into Chorlton. As well as a generous donation to Green Chorlton – through a bulk purchase of TAG! cards – JP & Brimelow are playing a huge role in helping us to support other local Chorlton independent businesses. Working with such a far-sighted and imaginative company has been a real pleasure.”

Another satisfied customer... Thanks to their competitive rates, effective marketing and a team of dedicated and helpful staff, JP & Brimelow have a long stream of satisfied clients.

Here’s the latest glowing reference to arrive at their Chorlton office... Dear Sir/Madam I recently sold my house on Cheltenham Road through the Chorlton branch of JP Brimelow and was only too happy to write a short appraisal of my dealings with them.

News Bulletin Green Chorlton is a not-for-profit community group that aims to promote environmental issues and sustainable living in a fun and friendly way. Our main activity has been the staging of Chorlton's Big Green Festival for the past four years, but we also do other things! This year Green Chorlton are looking at longer term projects to make real changes to the local environment and show people how they can dramatically improve their quality of life by choosing to make a few simple changes. An important part of this involves supporting our local and independent businesses.

JP Brimelow were one of three local agents I contacted, all of whom valued the property, gave me their opinions of the current market and the likely time frame to find a buyer.

days and it didn’t take much longer before the viewings began. I was also impressed at never having to call the office for feedback on viewings as they would always call me, often within a few hours.

I had recently had the property valued by a chartered surveyor and was impressed that Eddie Ellis of JP Brimelow valued my property at exactly the same figure. It reassured me that he was being honest about the value and prospects of a sale rather than telling me what I wanted to hear just to secure the instruction.

In summary, I would happily recommend JP Brimelow as agents for the sale of your property as I found their services to be thoroughly professional and they succeeded in securing a buyer for my property in exceptionally challenging market conditions.

Upon appointing JP Brimelow, the property was fully marketed with photos taken and all literature produced within a couple of

Flotsam

David Wiesner

The Daylight Gate Jeanette Winterson

The Pendle witch trials of 1612 are re-imagined in this novella. Published by the recently resurrected literary wing of Hammer horror, be warned that the publishers wanted grisly and gory! There are plenty of scenes to make your stomach churn. Jeanette Winterson brilliantly captures the hysteria and horror of an age where simply being Catholic could lead to your horrific and brutal death. With two women already in prison on witch-craft charges the pressure is on to find more. From London comes a determined lawyer out to impress his King and determined to destroy all of the so-called Pendle witches whether guilty or not. Loosely based on the actual facts this isn’t a book for those wanting a simple re-telling of events. All kinds of twists and turns have been invented to create not only a spooky tale but a commentary on a country gone conspiracy mad.

Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division Peter Hook

By now, even the most hard core Joy Division fan may feel like they’re heard it all before. But this autobiographical account by Hook, the band’s own bass monster, succeeds in bringing those days to life with on-thespot insight. It’s easy to simplify the story right down – along the lines of, singer Ian Curtis was troubled, and eventually he committed suicide. But this tells a more sprawling, full-bodied tale of four very different young men on the murky foothills of the music industry in the wake of punk. As demonstrated by his fine, gossipy memoir of the Hacienda days, Hook makes for a great storyteller. There’s humour and illuminating detail here, in amongst the oncoming tragedy. And if there’s a sense that Hooky’s getting in a few sly digs about his now former band mates along the way, well, it just makes for a more engrossing read.

This beautiful wordless picture book is perfect for sharing and gives your child a chance to tell you the story. A keen eyed explorer spots an old battered camera on the sea-shore. Having developed the photos, he is transported to magical worlds beneath the waves and discovers he’s not the first person to have found the camera. Over many years the camera has been bobbing around in oceans all over the world. As the magical day at the beach drawers to a close he decides to send the camera on its way and throws it back into the sea. It carries on its journey transported by seahorses, dolphins and all manner of mysterious creatures. This is a wonderful book which reveals new discoveries every time it’s opened. The illustrations are breath-taking especially the children’s facial expressions. Suggested reading age 3-6 years.

This is a perfect read on a dark cold night. After-all who really knows what happened 400 years ago on Pendle Hill. follow us on Twitter @communityindex

November in your Garden “No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds – November!” wrote the poet Thomas Hood in the mid eighteenth century when winters were winters and summers were… probably wet. Actually, there are plenty of flowering shrubs and perennials in November – Camellia, Viburnum tinus and some varieties of Mahonia all start to flower in November as does the cherry, Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’. Schizostylis, Aster and Liriope will probably still be showing on the perennial

scene and colchicum and cyclamen have been at it since September. But there is something about the true autumn leaf fall and inviting bare branches of November that makes us want to fish out our secateurs and get hacking. This is not necessarily a good idea so hold fire for just a minute. Some experts recommend pruning certain plants in November such as Corylus (Hazel), Philadelphus (Mock Orange). There is also advice in some quarters about pruning or renovating deciduous hedges with evergreens being better left until spring. Most agree that tall roses can be pruned now to prevent root rock. However there are also some things that should not be pruned now including anything potentially tender or

early flowering – Buddleja, Forsythia, Clematis montana or Wisteria for example where the growth has matured during the summer and would be removed by the overzealous wielding of secateurs. Waiting until mid-winter for pruning deciduous trees and shrubs is a good idea because the plants are truly dormant. Pruning in November may stimulate new growth just as the plant is trying to close down and weaken them. There are some trees and shrubs that prefer a summer trim including maples, birches, dogwoods, walnuts and elms. Pruning Prunus prudently is also recommended (in fact stone fruit in general) as they could become more susceptible to ‘silver leaf’ and avoiding pruning anything in wet conditions lessens the chance of spreading disease. So whilst it is tempting to get stuck into a couple of days of hacking back, if in doubt, wait until the winters sleep has set in properly or even admire your vigorous, generous shrubs and trees in all their naked glory and spruce them up in spring.

The group provides an opportunity to let your dog or puppy socialise, play and exercise, and for you to meet other dog owners, have some tea

Make yourself a Christmas Peacock

D

anielle Lowy from Rubbish Revamped shows you how to make yourself some cheerful little peacocks from used card and paper. Use them as tree decorations or hang them in a window.

You will need • An A5 sheet of paper, for example junkmail or a magazine sheet

hole in the centre. Glue bird shapes together.

• Card, from a greetings card or food packaging • Scissors • Glue stick • Sticky tape • One of those pesky ribbons attached to clothes • Two googly eyes or tiny buttons • Scissors • Glitter (optional)

1. Make a concertina from the A5 paper with each fold about 1cm deep. Snip off the ends at an angle.

2. Trace two bird shapes onto the wrong side of the card, facing in opposite directions.

3. Cut out the birds and the

4. Feed the concertina paper through the hole. 5. Pull the bottom edges of the wings downwards until they form a semicircle, then glue or tape them together.

6. Now pull the top edges upwards to make a circle and glue or tape together. Make a hole in the top with a hole punch or cocktail stick and thread the ribbon through. Glue googly eyes or tiny buttons on both sides of the head.Decorate with glitter if you like.

Christmas Lights for Chorlton We are delighted to announce that the newly formed Chorlton Traders has succeeded in raising the £1000 needed to ensure Chorlton gets its Christmas lights this year. The lights have now been chosen and will be hung on lampposts radiating out from the crossroads over the coming weeks.

We are holding a Christmas lights switch-on event on Thursday 6th December at 6.30pm. Local schools St Oswald Primary and Chorlton High School will be performing for the switch-on event and Chorlton Library will be hosting the afterevent – with hot drinks and snacks available. Chorlton Traders & Metrolink Promotion

STOP PRESS !

Chorlton traders, assisted by one of our founding members Carol of TAG! (Pass It On) Chorlton, are involved with a discounted ticket initiative run by Metrolink this Christmas to encourage shoppers to travel to the suburbs. We are inviting shoppers to come and enjoy a uniquely Chorlton Christmas shopping experience by celebrating an independent Christmas with us. Father Christmas will be travelling to Chorlton on Metrolink in November with gifts from both of Chorlton’s independent toy shops – Busy Bee Toys and Monkey Puzzle Toys – as well as our independent sweet shop Bittersweet. Specially discounted Metrolink tickets will be available between 17th/18th November and 26th/27th November. Offers available to TAG! cardholders from Chorlton’s own TAG! community loyalty card scheme for independent businesses will also be available to Metrolink ticketholders from 17th November until 2nd December. Independent businesses not involved in the TAG! scheme will also be invited to join in. TAG! is also running a ‘Win Back the cost of a Chorlton Christmas’ competition which is also designed to help promote an independent Christmas. We are hoping to run an initiative to collect toys bought at our independent toy shops and donated by businesses and residents for Chorlton disadvantaged children and link it to both of these promotions. Boxes will be located in both toy shops for this purpose. Keep an eye out for posters in the coming weeks!
