Losing my mum to such a horrible illness has been and remains an incredibly difficult time; but organising this night has been a positive thing for me, with a chance to honour my mum and raise some much needed money for the Society.”

the new cookery programme is more diverse than ever!

Cracking Good Food is delighted to announce the next round of cookery classes and cooking events for the public, running throughout the autumn. This Chorlton-based cookery network encourages more home cooking through hands-on classes for paying members of the public, funded workshops for community-based groups, pop-up Cooks On The Hop sessions at local events and special food trails and foraging workshops (see the website for more on these). Its purpose is to make food fun, cooking and eating together to pass on knowledge and share ideas for tasty, affordable meals. Adele Jordan, director of the not-for-profit group, says: “People

Southern Cemetery Gets Green Flag Status one of the largest municipal cemeteries in Europe with more than 117,000 graves spanning 135 acres – including the graves of L S Lowry and Victorian philanthropist John Rylands, amongst others – and includes a number of historic buildings – five of which are Grade II listed.

Southern Cemetery has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award after three years of improvements and hard work. Manchester City Council have worked closely with the Friends of Southern Cemetery and partners, such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to improve facilities and raise standards to be awarded the Green Flag – the UK’s benchmark standard for green spaces.

The cemetery is also full of a surprising array of wildlife and bio-diversity that has been managed and protected as part of the improvement works. So much so that local schools are planning to visit the cemetery to take advantage of the rich history and wealth of nature present in one of Manchester ‘s most valuable open spaces.

The flag was raised on Monday 5 September to celebrate Southern Cemeteries’ first ever Green Flag Award since the scheme was launched in 1996. The work focused on creating and maintaining a clean and attractive cemetery that visitors and residents could enjoy, while giving residents the opportunity to have their say in the management of the space.

Each year more than 1,000 burials take place with ceremonies representing the diverse cultural make up of Manchester and the cemetery has taken care to provide facilities to accommodate all cultural needs.

This included clean up operations by members of the Friends Group and the local community, as well as a scheme to resurrect 4,000 headstones that were laid down due to safety concerns – providing work placement opportunities for local residents and resulted in permanent jobs for two apprentices.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “This Green Flag award has been much deserved after the hard work and improvements that the cemetery has enjoyed over the past few years. Apart from the tremendous clean up effort, the project has also found two apprentices full time work

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick Chris Van Allsburg A very welcome reissue of a highly regarded and highly original American picture book, first published back in 1984. It’s not really a story at all, but rather a springboard for the reader’s own creativity. A series of delicately-rendered full-page black and white illustrations blend realism with hints of the fantastic, each complete with a dramatically-loaded caption. But the illustrations are unconnected, except by the conceit that they’re all excerpts of the work of the titular Harris Burdick, who once deposited them in a publisher’s office but was never seen again. The sense of mystery and magic is palpable throughout, and imaginatively-inclined children will really lap this up. On home turf Van Allsburg is much adored and his books Jumanji, Zathura and The Polar Express have all been adapted as major feature films. Suitable for ages 6-8 years.

When God Was A Rabbit Sarah Winman

How To Be a Woman Caitlin Moran

As a debut novel, Sarah Winman has set the bar extremely high for her future offerings. The story begins in the Essex Suburbs of 1968. As we follow Elly through the highs and lows of her slightly bohemian existence the reader is transported to Cornwall and New York.

Although this book is being described as the new “Female Eunuch”, that really wasn’t what drew me to it. Having flicked through the first few pages and seen hilarious chapters on naming certain parts of the body and outrage at the size of ladies pants today, I thought this was the book for me!

Born into a household full of love and warmth she forms an incredibe bond with her big brother Joe who happily takes on the role of her protector. Elly’s best friend is the mysterious Jenny Penny who uses her wild hair as an excuse for always being late. It’s not until later in the story that we find out the real reasons why. Along with a whole host of weird and wonderful characters we mustn’t forget the eponymous rabbit that just happens to be called God! The characters in this book are so lovable that you really don’t want the story to end. Winman deals sensitively with some tough topics such as domestic violence and child abuse. The recollections of Elly’s childhood were so well written it really made me nostalgic for my own 1970’s childhood! A fantastic read.

Moran is feisty and confident lady. She is able to write with brutal honesty about her struggles to turn into the woman she has become. What I found so refreshing was Moran’s take on what feminism means to the modern woman. No longer should we be burning our bra’s, they are our friend! Women are allowed to be feminine if they want to, without letting down the sisterhood. Moran admits that Germaine Greer had a profound effect on her early years and does show a great respect for her and her work throughout the book. This is not one for the faint hearted or easily offended. Nevertheless a highly entertaining and informative read.

Folk at The Beech Nearly 4 years ago a group of us decided we would like to sit in the snug of the Beech on the first Wednesday of each month and sing songs. Although we always plug the party line ‘songs mostly but not exclusively traditional’ the atmosphere is friendly and lighthearted. Some people sing their own songs and the odd pop song sneaks in from time to time. Why do we sing these old songs? Simple really, we like them. I think thousands of old folk songs have survived because they have human quality. They tell stories of love, death, heroism and betrayal often through the lives of ordinary people. Some are funny, some tragic, some banal and some just daft. I have to say daft is one of my favourite genres. Two years ago last January we decided to start a ‘Beginners Tune Session’. Alongside the old folk songs exists a massive collection of what are essentially country dance tunes. Most have survived on the instruments and in the fingers and memories of musicians who played for dances in houses, church halls, barns and other public places

and have no known composer. They have travelled with fiddlers, pipers and squeeze box players all over these Islands, across Europe and beyond sometimes retuning enriched by the journey. We have our own collection of tunes and provide music for those who can read the dots. We also share tunes in a number of other formats. One, ABC Explorer, is a piece of software that will play the tune on a computer as fast or slow as you like so that people can learn the tune and play along with it at home. We play the tunes slowly with lots of repeats so that everyone can join in and learn as they play. People bring fiddles, banjos, squeeze boxes, whistles, flutes, recorders, Northumbrian Smallpipes, guitars, mandolins, balalaikas, cellos, harps, hammered dulcimers and things to bang and shake. enormous bass instrument from the Mexican Mariachi tradition. We can now play fast enough for people to dance to and The Beech Band played its first Ceilidh at Chorlton Irish Club in July 2010. Our caller is Mr. Rob Phillips who knows lots of dances and explains them before the music begins. Our next appearance as a Ceilidh Band will be at The Irish Centre on Saturday 8th October for Water Aid and all will be welcome. If you enjoy good beer and good company pop into the Beech any time. A map of Whalley Range ... make sure you’re on it! Volunteer members of the WR Forum’s ‘Health and Sustainability’ group are creating a detailed map of Whalley Range and borders, including some key areas of Chorlton. The large A2 full colour map will include green spaces, historic landmarks, funky buildings, community gardens, libraries, leisure centres, pubs, post boxes, bus stops, shops, schools, dentists and doctors, community centres, cycle routes, allotments, mosques, churches, Metrolink stops, in fact anything that’s of interest. It will also include historic bits and pieces, general trivia and links to established community projects and providers. The map is being professionally designed and printed with the environment at heart too, on 100% recycled paper using natural inks and by a multi award-winning printer. It will

be a valuable and fun resource for all that are lucky to get their hands on one! The map was awarded a grant at the Manchester City Council-led UDecide event held in Whalley Range in Spring and will be completed later in the year. We’re now looking for wider input and support. 15 WAYS TO CREATE A GREEN HOME – PART 1 In the first of three articles Mike Macpherson of ADC Architects Ltd offers some exciting tips on how to make your home greener and how to choose green when making home improvements. Approximately 25% of all energy used in the UK is used domestically so one of the best places for us to start being green is at home. Giving your house a green makeover or eco-refurb doesn’t always have to cost a lot or be complicated. This month’s five tips to create a green home are simple ideas that you can gradually put into practice to start helping the planet and your bank balance.

1. Reduce Energy Usage:

Wasting energy is not just wasting environmental resources but also money. Within your home it is essential to look at ways of reducing energy use before tackling any other measures. A few easy ways to reduce energy consumption are: • Turning your heating thermostat down by 1oC will cut your heating bill by approximately 10% and typically could save £50 a year;

• Draught proofing, 15% of heat loss occurs through draughts so draught proofing window frames, doors, keyholes, letterboxes and floors will save energy; • Close the curtains at dusk to reduce heat loss through windows; • If you have any unused rooms, turn the radiators down to the lowest setting and bleed radiators regularly to ensure they are working at maximum efficiency; • Fit foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room; • Don’t leave things on standby, switching them off when not in use could save around £40 a year; • Is your water too hot? The cylinder thermostat should be set at 60oC/140oF

2. Insulation, Insulation, Insulation: Are you warmer

under a goose down quilt or a cotton sheet? Well, it’s the same for your house. Look to increase the ‘tog rating’ of your home by increasing the insulation to trap more warmth inside your house. This means less energy is

19 needed to heat the house, less CO2 emissions, and money saved on bills. Typically over 50% of heat loss from houses is through the walls and loft, so they are the best place to start upgrading insulation. These days you can choose from a wide range of effective insulation products made from mineral wool, polystyrene, cellulose (recycled newspaper), multi-foil, or even natural sheep’s wool for those who suffer from allergies. The type of insulation will depend on your preference, your budget, and your health.

3. Low Energy Lighting:

Change the bulb, change the bills! A low-energy bulb costing less than £2 can reduce your energy bill by £60-£100 over the bulb’s lifetime. How many lights do you have in your home? Installing dedicated low-energy light fittings (which only take energy-efficient bulbs) is the easiest way to reduce your electricity usage. This doesn't mean you have to compromise on style, as the shops now have great looking designs. LED fittings can also be installed to save money.

4. Buy A-Rated Appliances: Our home appliances – fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, kettles and dishwashers - use large amounts of energy, each costing around £25-£50 a

year to run. Simple measures can be taken to reduce the energy use of appliances. For example, whenever possible dry clothes outside rather than using a tumble dryer; don’t overfill the kettle, boil the right amount of water; keep your freezer well stocked for maximum efficiency. When buying new appliances, look at the EU energy label that all appliances now have to display. Choose A-rated products (or A++ for refrigeration), which consume up to 25% less energy and use less water. Also look out for the Energy Saving Recommended logo, which is awarded to only the most energyefficient products, and also endorses products in categories where there isn’t a statutory EU energy label, such as televisions and boilers.

5. Use less water: The

average household uses 175,000 litres of water each year or approximately 155 litres/person each day. We pay for that in our water bills. Considering that 35% of our total water use is flushed straight down the toilet this is an easy place to make changes to cut bills. Toilets use on average 61,000 litres of water/year - dual flush toilets are now fairly standard and if a low flush type toilet is used it reduces to 40,000 litres/year. If you are thinking of changing your bathroom fixtures choose a 4 litres per flush toilet.

Other ways to reduce your water consumption are to install reduced flow taps, aerated showerheads or flow regulators and take less baths in favour of showers. Outside in the garden a simple option is to install a water butt fitted to a rainwater pipe, the collected rainwater will keep your garden watered. A new home built in accordance with the Code for Sustainable homes has to achieve reduced water use of 105 litres/person per day. Existing homes should aim for this target too and try to save 25% on water consumption. Back to his Roots Manchester born David Tragen spent much of his twenties and thirties away from his home town, in some of Spain and Italy’s finest locations but after 14 years away, came back to his roots again. David grew up in Northenden, and as an English language teacher in Barcelona he had his light bulb moment. “Sheltering from what felt like a monsoon, I dived into a shop called Zeta Futon for cover. It was filled with beautiful furniture and lamps of all different materials, made by local designer-makers. It was

then that I realised that’s what I wanted to do.” So, to make his dream come true, David studied woodwork, art and design in his spare time from teaching. In 2000 he decided to dedicate himself full time to furniture making and in order to be able to interpret the more complex wishes of his clients he moved to Devon in 2002 to train further on a cabinet making course. Now he’s a local, living in Chorlton. “I knew I wanted to move to Chorlton as I’ve always liked the feel with its cool bars and funky shops as well as the people it attracts. These days I’m very rarely in city centre Manchester – why bother when

you’ve got virtually everything on your doorstep?”

David then set up a business with two successful branches to it. Tragen Design which provides contemporary, handmade, limited edition and bespoke fine furniture and Enhance which offers a more complete range of woodworking services to a wider public. With Tragen Design his work can be seen in Manchester’s churches, synagogues, schools and even the home of a long-standing United player. He received the best new maker award at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair 2008 and has seen his work published in numerous furniture design books. Enhance deals predominantly with fitted furniture and built in storage, providing a functional solution and employing the right materials to suit the clients’ budget. Some people prefer to use MDF, plywood and pine others who want something a bit more special choose real wood veneers and solid hardwood. If you want

your home office to have a revamp, and feel like you’ve got a new house, he’s your man. And his talents don’t stop there; outside woodwork, he teaches beginner level Spanish and DJs under the name of Señor Caramba, playing latin, funk, soul and jazz. David’s also a keen amateur photographer and you may have seen him down on Chorlton Ees or the waterpark with his camera in hand. October in your Garden by Katherine Watson The last part of September brought with it that comforting change from summer to autumn with some lovely patches bright crispness amongst the wet and windy days. This time of year is a favourite for many people maybe because we have finally given up the slightly stressful weather-worry of summer (and if we will ever have one) and start to imagine fires and leaves and the cold romance of winter. In the meantime, our gardens continue to be quite lively through October – a month Christopher Lloyd loved so much that “Even writing a capital O at the start of its name is a pleasure”! There are still an abundance of flowering plants and now is a good time to divide hardy perennials and

move some ill-placed plants to a different position, making sure they are well bedded in, watered and mulched for their winter hibernation. Apart from the many flowering perennials still present in the garden we also start to see the autumnflowering bulbs making their presence known – cyclamen, crocus and colchicum taking over from the wonderful Nerine bowdenii. Autumn flowering bulbs can be planted in the late spring – early summer period and if they don’t flower in the same year, give them a chance the following year. I put in a Shizostylis (Kaffir Lily) some years ago, that took a couple of years to make an entrance and now seems very happy to produce flowers as late as any bulb. Other bulbs

can be planted now for a spring show – Narcissus (Daffodils) and Allium are good ones to try but the latter definitely prefer a sunny spot and look great planted in number. Galanthus (Snowdrops) can also be planted now but seem to have a better success rate if planted ‘in the green’ after their flowering time during spring – no harm in giving it a go anyway. Tulips are a stalwart for the spring border and for pots but hang on a few weeks - the bulbs are better planted a little later (November) as any early growth could be damaged in a harsh winter. Garden Sharing in Chorlton

with Transition Chorlton Are you a Chorlton resident who would love to develop and tend a garden but you live in a flat with no garden or perhaps a house with only a very small garden or yard? Or, are you a Chorltonite with a garden or plot of land that you are unable to maintain as fully as you’d like, perhaps due to poor health or simply lack of time? Transition Chorlton think that “Garden sharing” could be a simple and effective solution to bring together these two groups and get would be gardeners gardening and underused garden spaces growing and thriving. Sharing plots of land is already an established idea, with various national and local schemes having been started here and abroad. TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall set up Landshare in 2009 to bring together prospective smallholders with community minded landholders across the UK, with groups having since started in Canada and Australia. The emphasis of most of these schemes is on

growing food, part of the “grow your own” movement toward increased self relience in food production, with gardeners and those donating land agreeing to share the produce grown between themselves. Transition Chorlton would like to see lots of garden sharing in Chorlton. We know there are lots of people waiting for allotments space and garden sharing could provide an alternative way of accessing land for growing without having to wait for years (and years!) Growing some of your own food is satisfying, a great way to spend time outdoors and has the added advantage of reducing your carbon footprint and your foodmiles. If you’re more interested in flowers, there are lots of benefits for increasing biodervisity with wildlife gardens and improving the appearance of Chorlton gardens. Prospective gardeners need not act individually. Groups of friends could perhaps work together on a number of gardens, so that those with

more experience of share their knowledge and skills with those who have less practical experience but lots of enthusiasm! Interested? Zion 100 presents Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Society. Named after one of the building’s first community groups when the building first opened in 1911. The finale will be a promenade theatrical performance designed to take people on an immersive journey through history. Directed by Jonathan McGrath and featuring many of Zion’s young participants alongside professional and local performers this is a full scale production and a great chance to get involved in a commemorative piece of community history.

Zion Arts Centre and Jonathan McGrath are looking for an all male choir to help recreate the original Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Society – from which the production takes its namesake. The choir will be required to be part of the performance on Sunday 9th October and will be acting a rehearsal in which one of Zion’s in-house young songwriters will be teaching the choir a specially written song about Zion. This open rehearsal will feature as part of the performance which audience will walk through and witness the choir (in full 1911 costume!) being taught the song.

This is a great opportunity for a choir to get involved with a piece of theatre and help bring a young person’s song to life. As the performance will only feature the choir rehearsing and not a polished performance you will only need to give up your time on the Saturday and possibly one rehearsal in the week’s run up to the event.

in Chorlton

Calling all local and not so local artists! You are invited to join ‘Life in Chorlton’, a new, cooperatively organised life drawing group, which will hold its first session on Thursday January 19th between 9.30-12.30 at a great Chorlton venue, The Edge theatre space, next to the Methodist Church on Manchester Road. Sessions will be untutored giving you the opportunity to develop your own responses and solutions to the nude model (male and female) in the medium of your choice. Costs for a ten week ‘term’ to cover rent and model fees will be in the region of £40-£45 per person, depending on the number in the group.

Sharing the work load With no paid organiser, the tasks involved in making sure the sessions run smoothly, will be shared by the group (according to how much time individuals can make available). The sorts of tasks involved include: maintaining communications with other group members; booking the models; paying the rent, making the tea and bringing the biscuits! We are not able to offer drop-in sessions as we have to pay rent and other fees up front. We are looking for committed individuals supportive of a team approach to delivering resources for artists.

The sessions Members will take it in turns to set the poses according to their own particular interests (some artists prefer short poses others like to have just one or two poses for the whole session)

innovation welcome! Don’t — be put off by the thought of setting the model if you have no experience of doing so, there are plenty of examples out there in the art world to inspire you and some models like to set their own poses with only light guidance! Sessions will be, 2x1 hour sittings with a half hour break between for coffee and chat. There will be no formal ‘show or tell’ session and you can be as private or public as you wish about the work you produce. The tea break, will afford plenty of opportunities to discuss work, art and life and to organize exhibitions and other joint ventures if this seems like a good idea.

The Venue The first floor room at The Edge is a great drawing venue; private, spacious and with good natural light and a sink. Access to a kitchen and a stair lift are added bonuses.
